rigsby’s has been the name synonymous with carpet and tile in northeastern Oklahoma for nearly 60 years. They cater to residential and commercial clientele and have an outstanding, knowledgeable staff eager to assist you with the latest floor covering styles and trends in design for your home or office space. They are familyowned and operated. Owner Dub Stover is a Veteran and his two sons, David and Jeff Stover, are active in the business. Grigsby’s Director of Operations Penny Carnino says, “The hard surface industry has grown in leaps and bounds over the past several years. As a result, there are limitless styles, colors and materials to suit anyone’s taste and budget.” Lately, designers are using a lot of hard-surface, manufactured materials on floors, walls and ceilings. They offer luxury vinyl tile products that look like wood,
but are more durable and a great choice if you have pets, active children or moisture issues. Grigsby’s carries a beautiful, 3-layered engineered product called Wallplanks TM that combines a high density fiberboard core sandwiched between two hardwood veneers. It has a precision ship lap joint milled on its long sides. The result is a light weight and stable plank that is only 1/4” thick, 5.1” wide with lengths from 12” to 48”. This collection uses a patent pending process of infusing stain pigments into hardwood veneers creating numerous renditions of reclaimed or exotic wood designs that are easily maintained. While learning what is trending, check out the new ceramic ship-lap tile that is absolutely stunning and comes in a wide variety of colors and styles. If you’re considering something for an outdoor living area, consider one of Grigsby’s

many porcelain offerings. They’re harder and more durable than ceramic tile and do well outdoors. polished tile is popular again and there are many beautiful collections from which to select. They carry Carrara, a manmade porcelain marble that is hard to distinguish from the real thing. STAINMASTER® perfected PetProtect TM luxury vinyl and the feature is now available in products by several other manufacturers. If your family includes a fourlegged friend or an occasionally rowdy kid, you’ll be wise to look at products with features that include STAINMASTER’S Pet-claw shield and Pet-action traction. These products are 100 percent waterproof and resist odors from your pet’s accidents. “We’re constantly updating and changing product selections to stay abreast of favorite market trends,” said Carnino, “while continuing to deliver excellent service to our customers by providing helpful information and the finest selections available in northeastern Oklahoma. And, as always, our prices are very competitive.” If you’re building or improving your home, search the fine carpet, tile, hardwood and luxury vinyl flooring available at Grigsby’s. “
BY DUANE BLANKENSHIP
orchwood Air Conditioning, Heating, Plumbing & Electrical is coowned by Eric and Christy Danels. The company has provided products and services to metro Tulsa homes and businesses since 2008. Eric and Christy dated for nine months. One evening Eric told her, “I want my own business one day.” The discussion concluded with Christy offering to loan Eric $10,000 to purchase a van and begin his dream. Eric and Christy beam when they talk about Torchwood’s beginnings. “I asked Christy to marry me two months later and we were married two months after that,” said Eric. In 2010 Christy quit her job and joined Eric full time at Torchwood. “He was trying to do it all himself,” said Christy, “office work, service calls, bookkeeping and advertising.” Using the Guerilla Marketing book by Jay Conrad Levinson, Eric began growing his business. He went house-tohouse hanging flyers on doors,

FIXING THINGS”
contacted people he knew and the Torchwood phone began ringing. “I’ve always enjoyed fixing things and making people happy,” says Eric. “I’m a problem solver and it’s not unusual for me to get a call to inspect a home where there’s an unusual noise or smell.” One of Eric’s most comical challenges was after receiving a call from an elderly gentleman who was hard of hearing. Each morning between 2 and 3 a.m., he was awakened by an unusual noise that he could not pinpoint. He emphasized that it always happened precisely between 2 and 3 o’clock each morning. Eric made repeated visits to locate the source of the noise. He checked AC/Heating, the water heater and each faucet to see if one was rattling. All to no avail, but he reassured him that the equipment was in great shape. “One morning the gentleman came in beaming to see Eric. He had a clock-radio in his hands. “This is it!” he exclaimed. He had purchased the clock months ago not knowing that someone had preset
the alarm, but had not set it to any station. “Therefore,” said Eric, “at exactly 2 o’clock each morning the radio alarm would go off and emit the static you hear when a radio is between stations.” “Our customers just love Eric,” says Christy. “He can fix anything. He’s loyal, he’s fair and a man of his word. In addition to air conditioning, heating, plumbing and minor electrical services, Torchwood does kitchen and bathroom remodeling. “We gut, redesign areas, replace surfaces, fixtures and appliances.” The Danels also own Robertson Plumbing Supply in Tulsa. Both businesses office and warehouse together. “Relationships are what we’re all about,” agree Eric and Christy. “We hope you’ll give us a call next time you need our services.”

BACK TO CLASS COMMUNITY RESOURCES LEND A HAND
BY KRISTIE ROE-OWEN
B
ack to school can be an exciting time. After a summer of splashing around in a pool to beat the sweltering sun, playing Minecraft and Roblox at all hours, rolling around the neighborhood on bikes, and kicking it at summer camp, kids are armed with an arsenal of cool stories to share with their schooltime pals.
For many kids, teens, and tweens, one of the best parts about the return to school is that exciting feel of strutting around in a new pair of kicks, flashing a cool new backpack. However, for families struggling to make ends meet, the end of summer can be just another reminder of the hardships they face. Between school supply lists
and the sudden realization that a child’s pants are two inches too short, many families could use an extra hand with getting everyone ready and confident for that first week back to school. Fortunately, there are plenty of places in Green Country to help lighten the load and get kiddos looking fly for those obligatory first-day Facebook feed pics.
ROCK THE COOL GEAR. Martin Regional Library and the Coalition of Hispanic Organizations is hosting a bilingual Back to School Community Resource Fair on August 15th from 9 to 11 a.m. at Martin Regional Library at 2601 S. Garnett Road in Tulsa. Free school supplies including basics such as backpacks, pencils, glue sticks, folders, binders, and other necessities will be given to the first 200 school children present. More than 40 local organizations will be present to offer resources to help students and parents throughout the year, and the event will also provide free dental screenings, immunizations, and eye screenings. The first 100 students present at Hutcherson YMCA on August 13th at noon will receive free backpacks and school supplies. The 20 |

address is 1120 E. Pine Street. Tulsa Ministerial Alliance will host its Back to School Bash from 2 to 5 p.m. on August 13th at Tulsa Technology Center in Sand Springs. The event is located at 924 E. Charles Page Boulevard. Kids can get free haircuts, backpacks and school supplies, dental checks, and flu shots. The event will also offer free hot dogs, bouncy fun, Tulsa County Reading Road Show, and $1 snow cones. SHAPE UP THAT ‘DO. The only thing worse than going back to school with shaggy hair is getting tape bangs courtesy of Mom’s kitchen shears. Thankfully, a few free haircut options are available for Green Country kids. Kids can get their hair on-fleek and just about anything else they need at the Cox Communications and Fox 23 Back to School Expo on Saturday, August 12th. In addition to free haircuts, the first 3,000 students can get immunizations, backpacks, and school supplies while enjoying free on-stage entertainment while they mingle with roaming local sports team and cartoon mascots. The event will take place at the Cox Expo Center from 9 to 11 a.m. Another great option for getting that ‘do in order is the Boys, Books, and Barber Cutoff at Greenwood Cultural Center from 11
a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 13th. Boys in kindergarten through 8th grade will also receive books, backpacks, and refreshments. Registration is August 12th. Seminole and will offer free braids and cuts for kids under 12 years old. Although this is a free event, tipping the stylist is encouraged. Reservation is required at (858) 255-4167. The van offers vaccinations for children who are uninsured, Medicaid eligible, or Native American, as well as BMI screenings for children ages 2-18 years. A parent or guardian must be present with each child’s vaccination record.

FINANCIALLY FIT
4 ESSENTIAL HOMEBUYING
BY KENNETH WOHL
VP MORTGAGE OFFICER, RCB BANK
TIPS
Purchasing a home is one of the largest investments you’ll make. Avoid common mistakes with these four valuable insights.
#1: GET PRE-APPROVED FIRST. House hunting is the fun part of homebuying, but looking before getting pre-approved can break your heart when the home you fall in love with doesn’t fit in your budget. First, and most importantly, get preapproved for a loan. Then focus on neighborhoods in your price range. You’ll save time and heartache.
#2: DONʼT GET PRE-QUALIFIED AT YOUR MAXIMUM LOAN AMOUNT. This is a potential set up for financial hardship. Loan eligibility is based on your earnings before taxes and withholdings. Your monthly mortgage payment comes from your take home cash. What you qualify for and what you can actually afford to pay each month may be different depending on your living expenses and spending habits. Ask your lender to factor your budget into your pre-qualification. Determine a comfortable payment you can afford that will also allow you to save money for emergencies or other financial goals.
#3: SHOP LOCAL, IN PERSON. Scoping out the field online can provide a general idea of current rates and options, but this is a major financial decision. Speak directly with a local banker or two. They’re informed on specific loan options available in your particular area. Plus, they can tailor a loan estimate to your individual needs.
#4: BUY FOR TOMORROW. A home that fits your needs today may not later if you decide to have kids or change careers. Know your personal and family goals and shop with them in mind. Choose a home to grow in and one that will sell when it’s time to move. Don’t rush to buy a home. Dream, plan and research all your options, so you make a smarter purchase. Feel free to call me, Kenneth Wohl, at 405-608-5291 or email kwohl@bankrcb.net if you have questions, even if you are not a customer.

FAMILY FUN IN OKLAHOMA BY KRISTI ROE-OWEN
all is almost upon us, and before we know it, it will be time to trade in ice cold lemonade for pumpkin spice lattes. But don’t mourn the end of summer-- there’s plenty of fall festival fun to be had in northeast Oklahoma before the weather starts to cool. Claremore’s 38th Annual Bluegrass and Chili Festival is September 7-9 at the Claremore Expo Center. Load up the minivan with your lawn chairs, because it’s BYOS (Bring Your Own Seat) at this free annual three-day event. Top regional bands will entertain on three stages performing a variety of music including country, gospel, bluegrass and classic rock and rhythm & blues. The Mid-America Regional Chili Cook-off is on Saturday with a spicy salsa division. The event will also include a Festival Market, arts and crafts, a car show, vocalist competition, and more. There’s even more fair fun in September at the Rogers County Fair in Claremore. The festival and parking are free, leaving you with plenty of cash to spend on funnel cakes and carnival rides. This fair is a great place for makers, as it is home to some remarkable competitions and arts and crafts shows. The fair also offers talent shows, parades, fireworks, a 5K fun run, pumpkin patch, car shows, live music, and pageants. The Tulsa State Fair is also coming up, opening on Sept. 28. You can always expect to have a great time there, as it is one of the largest events in Tulsa filled with entertainment, rides and family fun. FOODIE BY KRISTI ROE-OWEN
I
would say I am a fan of sushi, but that really isn’t true. I am more of a sushi fangirl. Give me all the sushi. First of all, sushi is arguably the most adorable food. If a sushi chef has any degree of competence, it is highly instagrammable. As a person generally fond of snack foods, anything that falls in the dual appetizer-meal category is high on my faves list. If you’re a sushi novice, I’ve put together a few little tips for expanding your sushi horizons.
KNOW THE LINGO. Trying to order sushi can be intimidating (shout out to anyone who ever tried to discreetly google “unagi” on your iPhone before the sake arrived). In fact, the only thing more intimidating than trying to navigate unfamiliar terminology is sitting down to eat with someone who inexplicably knows every Japanese term on the menu. It is a common misconception that sushi is always raw fish. Sushi is just a blanket term for bite-sized food rolled in vinegared rice. There are two main kinds of rolled sushi: maki and uramaki. All rolled sushi consists of rice and nori (seaweed) wrapped around other ingredients, typically fish and vegetables. Maki basically means any rolled sushi, typically with rice wrapped in nori. Uramaki means “inside-out roll” because the nori is on the inside of the rice. The other main food items on a sushi menu are typically sashimi (sliced raw fish) and nigiri (sliced raw fish served on rice). You 34 |

probably know what wasabi is, but you may not know that another word for soy sauce is shoyu. The only other thing you really need to know is the name of the fish you are ordering. Unagi is eel, tako is octopus. Ikura is salmon roe, masago is smelt roe. No one knows what a smelt is, but their eggs are orange and delicious. Sake is the Japanese word for salmon, maguro is tuna, and hamachi is yellowtail. Ebi is shrimp, kani is crab. There are many other items you might encounter, but if you learn these terms, you can order off the menu with some degree of competence. If you’re wary about eating raw fish so far inland, set your mind at ease. Most sushi restaurants in Tulsa have fresh fish flown in every two days or shipped overnight. Tuna comes from Honolulu, while most other fish comes from Los Angeles. Ingredients like eel and octopus are flown frozen because they have to be shipped from Japan. Sushi chefs take pride in serving only the very best ingredients, so you never have to ask if the fish is fresh.
EAT LIKE AN EXPERT.
Even after eating sushi for years, I still struggle with eating it the way it’s intended, so I don’t. Sushi is meant to be eaten in single bites, which is why sushi has to be rolled very tightly and served in small pieces. With each bite, you taste the fresh ingredients, the flavors blending together perfectly. The problem is that often, those bites aren’t really very bite-sized, and there is just no graceful way to shove an entire piece of sushi in your mouth without looking like a giraffe at feeding time. Try cutting it in half or eating it in two bites and you’re likely to end up wearing rice. My advice is to eat it however you can get it in your mouth. It is also a no-no to dip the rice side of nigiri into the soy sauce. If you dip the fish, you get the perfect portion for flavor enhancement, but if you dip the rice side, your rice soaks up the soy sauce like a little sushi sponge and turns your perfect bite of salmon or tuna into an oilcolored sodium bomb. Worse, your
hi
Course soy sauce dish becomes a wasteland of errant rice soldiers drifting aimlessly in an ocean of MSG. When it comes to wasabi, just remember that if you add too much, you can’t taste the sweetness of the fish. If you still aren’t sure what the ginger is all about, it is for cleansing your palate between bites. The biggest sushi etiquette you need to worry about has to do with appreciating the food you are eating for what it is: art created by an artisan.
SHARING IS CARING. Eating family style is the best way to try many different rolls, and it can be the most fun way to break bread with your tribe. But when you eat from the communal candy roll, turn your chopsticks backward so the blunt end is touching the sushi. This keeps your germs out of contact with everyone else’s food. Sushi burritos, spam sushi, and sushi “burgers” are all actual things that exist in the world. You can even order a “sushi bazooka,” a device
resembling a piece of PVC pipe for rolling sushi and pushing it out in much the same way your Play-Doh pasta maker did when you were a kid. And some of the sushi rolls you can get at grocery stores are actually pretty decent.
BE CREATIVE. There’s no wrong way to make or eat sushi. Technically, at least. People are doing weird things with sushi in this postmodern age. Many completely legitimate sushi restaurants offer the east Asian answer to the Monte Cristo, deep fried sushi rolls. There is an entire subreddit dedicated to the mad science of bizarre sushi creations at www.reddit. com/r/SushiAbomination/. Tulsa has plenty of great sushi spots, so grab your soymate and let the good GIVE US YOUR REVIEW SUGGESTIONS times roll. It WWW.VALUENEWS.COM AND CLICK CONTACT OR would make miso happy.

MELANIE HASTY-GRANT & KEN GRANT WATERSTONE PRIVATE WEALTH MANAGEMENT (918) 272-1120 | WWW.WATERSTONEWEALTH.COM 9500 N. 129TH E AVE SUITE 106 OWASSO, OK 74055 Despite volatile financial markets and slow economic growth, in the U.S., there are more millionaires than ever. That’s encouraging! As of the end of 2016, there were a record 10.8 million millionaires nationwide, according to a new study from Spectrem Group’s Market Insights Report 2017. According to the author of The Millionaire Next Door, only 20% of millionaires inherited their wealth; meaning the other 80% earned their wealth on their own. So, I’m not talking here about just movie stars and pro-athletes. I’m talking about everyday people! However, these millionaires didn’t just fall out of the sky and they didn’t win the lottery! They are regular people who are intentional with their money. The following are 5 traits of “everyday millionaires” that we work with at Waterstone Private Wealth Management.
1) They live beneath their means. The easiest way to become a millionaire is also the most boring. Millionaires have a tendency to live in the
same house for most if not all of their adult years. They drive their cars into the ground. They keep their cell phones way past their contract dates (some of the ones I know still have a flip phone). They are cost conscious about where they shop for groceries. You would never know that they were millionaires because their lifestyle does not reflect it.
2) They invest. With the money they save from not having the bigger house, newest car, and hottest gadgets, they save and invest it. Just to
give you an example: If you invest just $5500 a year starting at age 20 and do this every year until you are 60 and that money grows at a rate of return of 8% a year, in 40 years , you’ll have 1.42 Million dollars!
3) They don’t have debt. Often the only debt these folks have is their home. They don’t use credit cards and if they do, they pay them
completely off each month. They pay cash for cars along with their trade-in rather than getting a car loan. Not having debt and keeping their expenses low allows them to focus on creating the life they really want.
4) They plan, plan, plan. Millionaires are planners and shop around for the best price. They research purchases on the internet before they buy them. They have a financial plan and an estate plan. They are patient and are not looking for the next “get rich quick” scheme.
5) They spend their extra money on travel and experiences rather than things. Instead of accumulating more stuff, they tend to be more interested in creating memories through experiences and travel.
At the end of the day, there is no substitute for hard work, controlling spending, saving early and regularly, and making good investment decisions. Wealth preservation is more important that just accumulation. Choose your advisor and investments wisely. Where your invested matters. FOUR FINANCIAL EXPERTS WEIGH IN WITH THEIR TIPS FOR YOUR MONEY LINDA RAINWATER, GENERATION INCOME STRATEGIES (918) 272-4456 | WWW.GENINCOME.COM 12899 E. 76TH ST. N, SUITE 106 OWASSO, OK 74055
The irony with all the things people want most—health, money, family, success—is that the “secrets” to attaining them aren’t secrets at all! Like an explorer who has landed on a treasure, many who achieve success are unselfish enough to tell others exactly how they did it. When it comes to investing, there are simple but effective principles that may start benefiting your portfolio today. Like most other areas in business, operating solely based on your emotions is catastrophic for investing. Many people’s default setting when it comes to money is getting emotional. This makes sense since money is so often connected to the people we love, but it also may explain why most people aren’t rich.
As you seek to invest wisely, try to avoid making decisions based on emotions or feelings. Instead, lean on the tested and tried principles that have helped to create wealth for years. By eliminating emotions from investing, you can position yourself and your family to enjoy those things you should be emotional about—like having meaningful, worryfree moments with one another. Every so often, a story will circulate about some “genius investor” who quickly traded his way to millions. Sadly, many unsuspecting readers find themselves inspired to try and do the same thing. This laissez-faire, nonchalant investing method probably can make you a millionaire, but only if you start out as a billionaire. When striving to invest successfully, consider lengthening your timeline. Invest with long-term goals in mind and be patient, knowing that the market tends to reward those who know how to keep their cool no matter what. Warren
Buffett once said, “The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient.” If you’re making the decision to play the long game and invest for a long period of time, then the sooner you get involved, more likely the better. A time-period as short as even a few years can make a big difference. The sooner you start making your money work for you, the sooner you may be able to stop working for money. Your financial health demands sound investing principles. By removing your investment strategy from all emotional entanglements, lengthening your timeline to invest for the long haul, and getting involved in investing as soon as possible, you may soon find yourself joining the ranks of those who enthusiastically shout their “secrets” for all to hear.

Diversify Your Investments … But Consolidate Your Providers
You have probably heard that diversification is a key to investment success. If so, you may also think it might also be good to diversify your financial advisors – after all, aren’t two (or more) heads better than one? Actually, some good reasons exist to consider consolidating all your investment accounts with one provider. Let’s look at each topic separately. Consider the two broadest categories of investments: stocks and bonds.

Stock prices will move up and down in response to many different factors. Bond prices are usually more strongly driven by changes in interest rates. Stocks and bonds often move in different directions. If you only own U.S. stocks, you could take a big hit during a market downturn. (Keep in mind, though, that even a diversified portfolio can’t prevent all losses or guarantee profits.) So, it is clearly a good idea to diversify your investment portfolio. Now, let’s move on to diversifying financial service providers. Actually, some good reasons exist to consider consolidating all your investment accounts with one provider. First, you’ll keep better track of your assets with much less
paperwork. Additionally, it will be much easier to follow a single, unified investment strategy, based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Also, if you have accounts with several different financial service providers, you might be incurring many fees. Finally, you won’t get conflicting advice and you’ll receive clear guidance on important issues. Diversification and consolidation – one is good for building an investment portfolio, while the other can help you invest more efficiently and effectively. Put the two concepts together, and make them work for you. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor Dale Alimena.
