Oklahoma Bankers Association Honors AVB Bank Director Neely Kimbrough BY KELLI SOWELL

VB Bank is pleased to announce that Board of Director Neely Kimbrough was inducted into the 50-Year Club during a special Awards Brunch at the Oklahoma Bankers Association’s 2019 Annual Convention & Trade Show. This honor acknowledged the over five decades of Kimbrough’s service to the banking industry. Kimbrough began his banking career with Arkansas Valley State Bank (AVSB) in 1962 as a lender. Named President in 1966, Kimbrough then assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer in 1984. He served as Chairman of the Board for 10-years, from 1990 – 2000. Retiring from AVSB in 2000, Kimbrough remained on AVSB’s Board of Directors. AVSB’s name was rebranded in 2008 to AVB, and Kimbrough now serves as an AVB Board Member. “Anyone that knows Neely, without a doubt, recognizes that when they
conducted business with Neely, they became a personal relationship to him. sh Etwardo, a Credit Analyst with AVB Bank, has been named an “Honors Graduate” of the 2019 Oklahoma Bankers Association Commercial Lending School. David Attaway, OBA Commercial Lending School Chairman, recently presented Etwardo with his plaque. Joining Etwardo and Attaway were AVB Bank CEO and President, Ted Cundiff, and Chief Credit Officer, Javier Gamarra. Etwardo was selected for the Commercial Lending School honor based on his outstanding work on the school’s exam and his contributions and participation in class. He was chosen by the school’s regents, staff, faculty and students. Etwardo was
among 58 bankers who attended the 2019 Commercial Lending School at the OBA’s Harris Event Center in Oklahoma City. “The OBA Commercial Lending School offers a first-class educational experience and helps cultivate the next generation of community bankers,” said Cundiff. “It is no surprise to us that Ash has been selected as an Honors Graduate. We are proud of his career accomplishment and his commitment to AVB Bank’s continued success.” OBA Commercial Lending students learn about the steps they should take in evaluating business loan requests, how businesses are structured, how they compete and how to evaluate the
management of business borrowers. They also study factors that affect loan pricing and approaches to loan structuring and administrations. The Oklahoma Festival of Ballooning Returns to Muskogee’s Hatbox Field

nce again the skies over Muskogee will be glowing with an array of vibrant color as the Oklahoma Festival of Ballooning descends upon historic Hatbox Field Aug. 16 and 17. The festival, now in its second year, will host dozens of balloon pilots and their crews, many of which will be in the running for the Oklahoma Hot Air Balloon Championship Governor’s Trophy. The weekend event is presented by Georgia Pacific and by the Muskogee Parks & Recreation Department with additional support from The City of Muskogee, Muskogee Tourism and The Greater Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce. The hot air balloon festival is managed by Kansas City AeroSports. The organization facilitates hot air balloon events nationwide.

“We are excited to be ballooning in Muskogee again and to bring the Oklahoma State championship to a wonderful city and a fabulous venue,” said Chris Sabia of Kansas City AeroSports, balloon meister, and event manager of the Oklahoma Festival of Ballooning. Festival-goers will experience luminous balloon glows both Friday and Saturday with many of the balloons inflated and lighting the festival grounds with a radiance of brilliant color. Back by popular demand, tether rides will be offered for those who want a few minutes in a floating balloon basket that is securely tied to the ground. Admission for the event is $10 per car. A food truck midway, Kid’s Zone, helicopter rides and an “Up, Up and Away” 5K run Saturday morning are all being offered as part of this year’s festival. Friday night’s concert includes fireworks, a balloon glow, and music by Grammy-award winner John Fullbright. On Saturday, Muskogee’s own, The Swon Brothers will perform to their hometown crowd. Country music newcomer, Olivia Ooms will open for the bands both Friday and Saturday. There will be RV campsites available. isitors to the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch in Oologah typically see the kinds of things one would expect to see at a ranch – animals, farm equipment, barns, etc., but this August, the historic ranch will boast a more unusual sight: airplanes, and lots of them. Slated for Saturday, Aug. 10, the Will Rogers/Wiley Post Fly-In will fill the sky over the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch in northeast Oklahoma with planes of all makes and models, as pilots make their way to Oologah for this annual family event. “For those unfamiliar, this is an annual fly-in at which pilots from throughout the state and some from outside Oklahoma converge on the Birthplace Ranch for a day of aviation appreciation, food and fun,” said Tad Jones, Will Rogers Memorial Museum executive director. Jones said that the event, which has been held for more than 20 years, previously began at 9 a.m., but due to its popularity, both pilots and members of the public would arrive much earlier, prompting the day’s activities to instead begin at 7:30 a.m. “Early arrivals will really be in for a treat as that’s when most of the planes will be arriving,” Jones said, “but there will be activities ongoing throughout the morning and early afternoon.” In addition to the planes – oftentimes, more than 100 – to fly in over Oologah Lake, the day will include food trucks, classic cars, Cherokee weaving and Cherokee storytelling by Robert Lewis, a remote control plane display presented by the American Turf Flyers, inflatables, face painting, and an appearance by a Will Rogers interpreter. “As much as there’s going to be for the family members, the pilots always appreciate it when members of the public approach them to get an upclose and personal look at the planes and to talk to them,” he said. “For comfort’s sake, we would encourage people to bring their lawn chairs

to sit in and relax as they watch the incoming planes.” In addition to the fly-in, Jones said the day will include a period of remembrance for those whose lives were lost in a small airplane crash. “A few years ago, we added a National Day of Remembrance to coincide with the Fly-In,” Jones said. “As Will Rogers was America’s spokesman for the then-fledgling flying industry, and Wiley Post was himself a flying pioneer, the Day of Remembrance is our way of honoring them and honoring anyone who lost their lives in a small airplane crash.” Events and activities will be ongoing
throughout the day, with the National Day of Remembrance ceremony to be broadcast at 10 a.m. on a Facebook livestream. Among those scheduled to be honored during the National Day of Remembrance are Joel Fream, Bob Hudson, Rick Sandoval, Steven Scott, Adina and Ivan Williams III, Steve Navarre, John Drake, Joe Hartung, David Huffaker, Robert Landry Sr. and four passengers, Randall Lee Harris, Lt. Dale Bryan Shillington, James Carroll Harris, George H. Sanders, Scotty Wilson, Daniel Chester Yeager, John Baxter Carder, Louis Leone, Joseph Provenzano, Richard Shimer, Lonnie Hardin, Bill Watson and Dr. William Kinsinger. It’s really a remarkable thing, and it’s just a fun, relaxing event that the whole family can get something from.” Attendance is free, although donations are encouraged, and commemorative t-shirts, hats, and other collectibles will be available for purchase. ince its inception, the George Miksch Sutton Aviation Research Center’s mission has been to achieve two things: conservation and education. However, for one evening this August, the center will aspire to one more goal: fermentation. Through tracking information provided by monitors called the Bald Eagle Survey Team, or BEST, Oklahoma’s confirmed Bald Eagle population has grown to more than a robust 200 nests around the state, many of which can be traced back to their release from the center. “Because of the success with the eagles, we’re better-known nationally and even internationally than we are here in the state,” Fogle said. “We continue to monitor (eagles) to make sure they’re doing well, and we work with developers to help them make better choices. “In our mission statement, we describe ourselves as a cooperative conservation organization,” she continued. “We try to work with as many businesses and organizations as we can because we truly believe we accomplish more if we work together. “Also an important part of what we do is education because, without education, all the conservation in the world doesn’t matter,” she said. “People need to know what’s going on in the world around
them and why, especially with children.” To this end, the center engages volunteers, citizen and professional scientists, conservationists and others, and provides hands-on educational opportunities. “When asked, we speak to children’s groups,” she said. “One of our premier projects is the Sutton Award, which is a statewide art show. It’s a statewide art scholarship program, and we give up to $20,000 to students in art programs in high school. The way that this fits in with our mission is that it helps students to tell the conservation story through art and essay. The Sutton Center is an internationally-recognized conservation nonprofit organization dedicated to finding conservation solutions for birds and the natural world through science and education. Located on a 40-acre campus in rural Bartlesville, the center is the former home Harold and Sandy Price, Harold is one of the businessmen who helped create the Sutton Center in 1983. A second site is dedicated to the conservation of the Attwater’s prairie chicken, also in Bartlesville, on 80 acres. The George M. Sutton Avian Research Center was named in honor of George Miksch Sutton, who until his death in 1982 served as Professor Emeritus at the University of Oklahoma and as an example to all aspiring field ornithologists. Who’s Who gives and account of Sutton, describing him as a “most prominent ornithologist of his time.” A biography of his work lists 13 books, 18 monographs and museum publications, 201 journal articles, 12 book reviews, four obituaries, 18 popular articles and eight essays. He also illustrated at least another 18 books. As Sutton was intensely interested in hands-on studies of birds in the field, he was commemorated by the center’s being named in his honor.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary this September, the Bluegrass & Chili Festival is two days of live “pepper hot” music on three stages, activities, food, fun and chili in downtown Wagoner. Where there’s the Bluegrass & Chili Festival, there is also Dell Davis. Davis, the special events coordinator with the City of Wagoner, has been with the festival from the start, first as a volunteer, and then as its organizer. “I’ve been with the festival every year from the very beginning except for one year – the year my twins were born, so I had sort of a legitimate reason for not being there,” Davis laughed. “We did the show 20 years in Tulsa in the very beginning, moved around, and this year will be our second (year) to be in

Wagoner, and to be honest, we couldn’t be happier. “Being here, the shows and the entertainment are downtown again, which gets us back to where we started, in a way,” she said. “People who have been coming to the festival for years, after we came to Wagoner told us that it really reminded them of when we were still in Tulsa – the downtown. There’s just something about the acoustics when the artists perform in the downtown area versus a more open area that truly enhances the sound.” And what a sound it’s going to be. As in previous years, the festival will be featuring a host of awardwinning artists to entertain the audiences. Among the audiencepleasing headliners slated to perform are Country Music Hall of Famers Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, plus frequent festival favorites, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. Multitalented singer, songwriter and performer Rhonda Vincent also will be returning this year, with her band The Rage, as will Russell Moore and IIIrd Tyme Out and The Edgar Loudermilk Band. “Back by popular demand, we have the grasshiphopfusion, and the just plain funny, The Cleverlys -- their comedy and unusual music will leave audiences wanting more,” Davis said. “Add the superb talents of fiddle extraordinaire Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper this is a menu of sizzling entertainment.”

In addition to the more wellknown artists, top regional bands will be entertaining on three different stages, performing a variety of music, such as country, bluegrass, gospel, classic rock, and rhythm and blues. Further, other musical entertainment highlights will be The “Junior Showcase,” which is designed to give talented young people 21 and under stage exposure and experience in a noncompetitive showcase. As an extra incentive, an acoustic guitar will be awarded by a drawing of all the participants, and various dance groups will be kicking up their heels onstage at the festival. ‘No Place like Home’ at Hospitality House
The Route 66 Gurney Tourney Raised Funds and Awareness for Families in Need BY SARAH SOUDEK
N
o Place Like Home was the theme of Hospitality House of Tulsa’s Route 66 Gurney Tourney race held Saturday, May 11, at the University of Tulsa. Many of the 65 racers dressed in costume attire from the movie classic, The Wizard of Oz and decorated their gurney beds in creatively themed décor.
This unique team race is a fundraiser for Hospitality House of Tulsa, a nonprofit that provides a “home away from home” for families traveling to get medical care in Tulsa. Over $35,000 was raised from the Route 66 Gurney Tourney with all proceeds going toward providing home-like lodging, meals, prayer support,
and transportation assistance to families in medical crisis. The event featured teams of five from local businesses, universities and health care companies racing gurney-style beds around a race track and obstacle course. Three team members push the gurney while one rides on top, and the fifth member serves as

Each of the four race obstacles were designed to represent real-life obstacles that families face during a medical crisis far from home, such as having adequate transportation and meals. “The fact that over 25,000 families travel to Tulsa from 50 miles away or more each year is not common knowledge in our community,” said Toni Moore, President and CEO of Hospitality House of Tulsa. “Gurney Tourney is designed to bring awareness to this staggering need in a lighthearted way by bringing teams together around this cause.
“It is always so inspiring when the community comes together to collectively meet a need in our city.” We are incredibly grateful for our amazing sponsors, racers, and volunteers who made this event happen for the fifth year. O
ne of my favorite children’s story books is If You Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Numeroff. It’s a silly story about a mouse who is offered a cookie, but wants a dozen other things before finally getting the cookie. At my house you can always get them because I keep a bag of frozen baked cookies in my freezer at all times! Even better, I have bags of frozen cookie dough balls ready to pop into the oven. In just minutes there are freshly baked cookies ready in case I need to bribe, console, or happy-up someone! My UPS driver (I call him my driver because he delivers to my house nearly every day) receives a “thank you” cookie from me often, and I’ve been known to pass out cookies to those who labor in my yard. It’s just a simple way to show appreciation, and I can’t tell you how

many times I’m told, “I haven’t had a homemade cookies in years.” (How can that be?) I have to admit I don’t have a sweet tooth, and I rarely partake in the cookie party that comes out of my oven. I’d much prefer a wedge of cheese, but I know I’m in the minority. I’m probably most known for my triple chocolate cookies because they’re like a brownie on steroids. The citrus ricotta cookies are great too, and satisfy those people who love anything lemony. When my kids were in school I tried to convince them that taking cookies to their teachers was never a bad idea. Sometimes at teacher conferences I would ask the teacher what her favorite cookie was, so I could file that very important information in my brain, and use it in the most necessary circumstances. I’d like to think at least

one of those bags of cookies I sent to school helped soothe the stress and frustrations in the life of a teacher. It doesn’t hurt to bake cookies for your spouse either. I’ve learned that a couple of warm cookies can cover a whole lot of mistakes, or at least I hope so! But with that said, I have to mention Laura Numeroff’s recent book called If You Give A Man A Cookie, a funny parody about how a man asks for a cookie, but spends the entire day obtaining it. I’ve chosen five of my favorite cookie recipes, which are on www. beadsandbasil.com, but here are two that are sure to make someone’s day.

• 1 cup chopped pecans, toasted • 6 tbsp. butter • 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped • 3 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped • 3 eggs • 1 cup sugar • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract • 1/3 cup flour • 1/4 tsp. baking powder • 1/2 tsp. salt • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt the butter, bittersweet chocolate, and semisweet chocolate in a saucepan over low heat. Alternatively, you can melt it in a glass bowl in the microwave by heating

You have to start these cookies a day before you want to make them, but they’re worth the wait! They’re also worth all the zesting you have to do with the citrus fruits (you can make a juice smoothie with the actual fruit juice).
for one minute on high, stirring, and heating in thirty second increments until mixture is nearly melted. Then stir until completely melted. Using a mixer with a paddle attachment, beat the eggs and sugar together until smooth and pale in color. Add the cooled melted chocolate and vanilla, and blend. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add to the chocolate mixture and stir until combined. Stir in chocolate chips. Scoop the batter into mounds on a parchment paper lined baking sheet, placing the scoops 2” apart. Bake 10-12 minutes, until the tops begin to crack and look glossy. Cool cookies for ten minutes, and then transfer to a baking rack to cool completely.

2 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 tbsp. baking powder 1 tbsp. kosher salt 2 sticks (16 ounces) unsalted butter, softened 2 cups sugar 2 eggs 1 pound whole milk ricotta Grated zest of 2 lemons Grated zest of 2 limes grated zest of 1 orange
At least one day before baking these cookies, sift the flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. In the bowl of a mixture with paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar for five minutes, until well blended. Add the eggs, one at a time and mix until smooth. With the mixer on low, add the ricotta in small amounts, and then the lemon, lime, and orange zests. Stir in the flour mixture until just blended. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and scoop the dough with a cookie scoop and place cookies on parchment lined baking
Triple Chocolate Cookies Makes 2 dozen large, or 3 dozen small.
This is my most popular cookie recipe, and I’ve used it to make a lot of people happy. Sometimes I make them big, and often I make small bite-sized cookies for larger events. Either way, this is how you win friends and put smiles on their faces!

Place frozen dough balls on baking sheets, two inches apart. Let set out for thirty minutes before placing in oven. Bake for 25 minutes, or until slightly golden. Remove from oven and allow to cool for ten minutes, then place cookies on a rack to cool completely. Frost each cookie with citrus glaze and serve. Citrus Glaze: • 1 stick (8 ounces) butter, softened • 3 cups powdered sugar • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice • Grated zest of one lemon • Grated zest of one lime • Grated zest of one orange In a bowl, beat the butter with the powdered sugar until smooth. Add lime juice and all three zests and blend until combined.
