take care of our employees so that they will take the best care of our customers.” South Pointe Service has always maintained the highest level of professionalism, honesty, and transparency for their clients. To ensure the most reliable service, every vehicle receives a series of quality checks, including a road test, before the customer’s auto is returned to them. “We make sure we take the time to find out what our customers’ needs are and do everything we can to meet or exceed those expectations,” he said. “We do a multipoint inspection on every car that rolls in here.” Expediency is also highly prioritized to ensure customers are not without their vehicle for too long. “We have the most Master Certified Technicians in the city and most bays,” Freeman said. “We know how important that vehicle is to our customers.” “We have tremendous buying power and support that helps us to offer our customers more. Including more vehicle inventory, parts and service, along with aggressively competitive prices,” said Freeman. Due to COVID-19, the service department has taken every precaution to keep their customers safe and comfortable during their visit. “Our attention to detail on CDC requirements is complete, and we follow and exceed all guidelines,” said Freeman. Plexi-shields have

been installed at all service desks, and all employees are required to wear masks and gloves. A plastic covering is applied to steering wheels and seats at the time of service, and even the customer’s keys are placed in a plastic bag. Social distancing is observed in all areas, including office and waiting areas. Areas are sanitized after each customer. “We’ve taken the time to ensure we are doing our part to the limit the spread of the virus, and validate the confidence our customers have in us,” he said. In perfecting the “customer culture” at South Pointe’s Service Department, their team rigorously seeks to

continuously evaluate the needs of their patrons. “This is all about YOU, the customer,” Freeman said. “We see this as being trusted with your livelihood, as your car is a tool for you to live your life. Your car needs to be back in your hands quickly so that you can get back to normal.” For more information, and to follow for frequent specials, follow their website at www.southpointecjd.com.

anna Malone is in the business of helping people. As co-owner of Ye Olde Apothecary Shoppe, she dispenses practical and insightful solutions with compassionate care. The Shoppe, located at 5874 S. Mingo Road in Tulsa, specializes in the medicinal use of marijuana and cannabis products. This cuttingedge dispensary offers a wide array of provisions for smoking, ingesting, or applying as a botanical remedy for many ailments, including pain relief, anxiety, and inflammation. The staff is well educated and can

provide practical advice on the use of medical marijuana. The dispensary also provides a CBD product line. Every Wednesday, and some Saturdays, their licensed doctor is onsite to provide recommendations for the state application of patients on a walk-in basis. Appointments can also be made any day of the week. Ye Olde Apothecary Shoppe provides professional guidance and products, in a warm and welcoming environment. “We really want to remind people that this a medical marijuana program and that we are not recreational yet,” said Danna. “We also need to remind people of the many benefits to patients that medicinal use can provide.” With so many questions and much interest, inquiries are highly encouraged. “If people have questions, they need to reach out to our dispensary, or any others that are more Left: Owner, Danna Malone; The Shoppe is extraordinarily knowledgeable about the medicinal use of marijuana. Here, Danna explains the role that Terpenes, a cannabis derivative, have in helping patients. Cancer patients have found significant results with the use of Terpenes. They are produced by a variety of plants, particularly conifers, and by some insects. They often have a strong odor and may protect the plants that produce them. Many edible herbs and plants have them, but they are most productive when applied medicinally in marijuana.

focused on medical use,” Danna said. “We do consultations and talk in-depth about our patient’s needs and ailments, and then we treat that.” Danna was working as a paralegal when the opportunity of dispensary ownership was presented to her. A colleague at the time had expressed interest in getting into the new industry in Oklahoma. Danna had always been interested in helping others achieve wellness and knew that it was the right fit for her. Danna had found that she saw results in providing comfort for her own conditions, including lupus, scoliosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. In the early 2000s, she was the Regional Director for a global online organization, Wish Upon a Hero. Their number one request was medical help for veterans with no insurance or money to pay for care. “I tried to help people get these resources, so when this opportunity arose, it was like I came full circle,” she said. The Shoppe was opened for CBD use only in October 2018, with medical marijuana following shortly after. Danna’s partner in ownership is her son, Patrick Malone. The dispensary is exceptionally veteran-friendly, providing muchneeded care and resources with medicinal marijuana licensing and product care. “We have helped many veterans, and have even gone into our own pockets to help veterans get the help they need,” said Danna. “I really

and truly believe this is something many veterans need.” The Shoppe encourages anyone that would like to help to donate to their Compassionate Care Program, which not only provides proceeds to veteran’s care but also disabled and cancer patients in affording licensing and medicine. “We want to help educate people and make them feel comfortable with medical marijuana,” Danna said. “If anyone has questions, just call us. We will even give a tour so people can see what a dispensary is like.” It is legal for anyone to enter a dispensary, but a state license is required to purchase marijuana products. Licensing is not required for CBD. “We will help walk people through the process to help them get their cards. We are absolutely patient-focused.” For more information, visit their website at www. yeoldapothecaryshoppe.com, or follow them on Facebook @yeoldapothecaryshoppe.

Right: Owner, Danna Malone with Dr. Carl Smith. Below: CBD and THC Products. According to Danna, many patients find that a trifecta of THC, CBD, and Terpenes are a dynamic solution in the use of medicinal marijuana.

From the US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health: The origins of cannabis as a plant-based product can be traced to the ancient world, with evidence suggesting its use in Romania more than 5000 years ago, with its medicinal application found around 400 AD. In the US, cannabis was widely used as a patent medicine in the 19th and 20th centuries and described in the US Pharmacopoeia for the first time in 1850. In these times, the local apothecary would have dispensed the remedy to those in need.

Beat the Heat BY SHANNON SMITH

W

e’ve arrived at the time of year when everyone complains about the heat and humidity of Oklahoma. When I hear someone say, “Can you believe how hot it is?” I can’t help but chuckle. I’ve lived in Oklahoma my entire life, so how can I be surprised at the sweltering heat we get every single summer? One of my best memories of childhood was going to church camp in July, where we had no electricity in our cabin, and we had to wear long pants the entire week. There were always a couple of kids who had to go home because they were overheated, and we were given salt tablets to help us stay hydrated. The best part of the day was when we got to go swimming, and the best part of the entire week was Sadie Hawkins Night when the

girls got to chase the boys. Whomever we caught was our date for dinner. Now that I’m all grown up, I have other things to look forward to in the summer. I’m usually traveling abroad, but this year is different. My friends around the world keep in touch as we all look forward to meeting again. Since most of us like to cook, we often send each other photos of whatever we’re making. Rachael in England is making elderflower cordial, and Diana in Bali is making fish stew. Inbal in Israel is making chocolate lava cakes I taught her on a Zoom call. In Italy, my friend Diane makes spaghetti with zucchini and garlic. We made it together many years ago in her apartment in Rome. She used tiny zucchini she bought at the market and sautéed them in garlic and olive oil

with a pinch of chile flakes. I’ve never been a huge fan of zucchini, but when we sat down to eat that heaping plate of pasta, I couldn’t believe how delicious such a simple dish could be. I learned an important lesson that day. If you’re using fresh ingredients and really good olive oil, you don’t need to fuss with much more. And it usually takes just minutes to make. The farmer’s markets are brimming with summer zucchini this month, and I highly recommend trying this recipe. I’ve added a few other ingredients, but you can keep it simple with just zucchini, garlic, and olive oil if you prefer. If you’re still complaining about our Oklahoma heat, remember that we’ll be buttoning our sweaters and wishing we had fresh vegetables from the garden in a few short months. Meanwhile, instead of saying, “Can you believe how hot it is?” say, “Let’s make pasta!”

Spaghetti with Zucchini Makes 8 servings - This was the first dish I learned to make in Rome with my friend, Diane. She had purchased the smallest zucchini that morning at the Campo de Fiori market, and we sliced them thinly into little “coins” for a simple sauce to blend with spaghetti. We finished the dish with fresh basil picked from a pot sitting in her kitchen window. This dish takes just minutes to make, yet it is light and filling. A perfect summer dish! • • • • • • •

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add an abundance of salt, then add spaghetti. Stir to prevent sticking. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add garlic and red pepper flakes and stir for thirty seconds. Add zucchini and 1/2 teaspoon of salt, stirring to coat in the oil. Cook for three minutes, then remove from heat. When spaghetti is tender, transfer it to the pan of zucchini, using tongs. Add 1/2 cup of the pasta water and the lemon zest. Stir in basil, parmesan cheese, and butter. Taste to see if more salt is needed. Serve immediately.

Local Experts for Wood Floors BY MACY GOODNIGHT

T

he elegance of wood floors is timeless and classic and can elevate the look and feel of any interior. The installation and maintenance of wood flooring should be trusted to an expert with ample experience. In the Tulsa area, The Wood Floor Store is the go-to place that the homeowners, home builders and remodelers have entrusted with their hardwood, vinyl, stair installations, wood refinishing and so much more for over 14 years. Owner Roger Poffen opened shop as a wood floor service company in 1989 and incorporated their retail side of the business in 2006. The Store, located

18 |

at 5151-B S. Mingo Road, offers the highest quality real wood flooring, as well as multiple lines of vinyl and waterproof options for residential and commercial needs. “We offer several lines of engineered and prefinished floors, with stain and finish already on them,” said Roger. “These are great for installation without sanding in the home.” Real wood floor sales, with installation, sand, stain and finish, as well as refinishing and maintenance are also available. The store has now introduced complete staircase sales and installation, including balusters, newels, rails, treads and risers. Initial consultations and estimates are free.

VALUE NEWS TULSA AUGUST 2020 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM

“We restore a lot of the old hardwoods around Tulsa, especially midtown’s older homes,” said Roger. “Some of the older materials are actually hard to find, as far as length to match, because milling today is not like it was 100 years ago.” In the earlier homes, hardwood flooring planks were sometimes milled at more than 10 to 12 feet long. Now, wood planks are most commonly milled at 8 feet or less. “In order to do an added room or restoration in an older home, you have to be able to find the longer lengths. We can do that,” he said. It is a common misconception that wood flooring is overly pricey or

Left: Roger Poffen, owner is committed to excellence, the highest quality products, and professional installation.

s and More difficult to maintain. “Wood floors are not nearly as expensive as people think when you compare how long it’s going to last, the wear you’re going to get out of it, and the ease of cleaning or maintaining,” said Roger. “Compared to other floor coverings, it’s a nobrainer.” For those concerned about heavy wear and possible damage, vinyl flooring is a tangible choice. “The wood-look vinyl and waterproof flooring is making a big impression these days,” he said. “If you have children or pets, it might be a better option as it is literally indestructible.” Depending on preference, both are great options, but the real hardwood

floors will last forever. “We’ve seen floors we refinished 20 years ago that look like we just did them yesterday.” Hardwood floors are easy to take care of with a few simple rules to follow: • For cleaning, never use a product that contains wax. Sweep, vacuum, and only use a good wood floor cleaner that will not leave a buildup on the floor. “Refreshers and rejuvenators bought at most stores usually have wax in them,” Roger said. “To bring them back requires a complete re-sanding to restore them, and that can get really expensive.” The Wood Floor Store has its own floor cleaner available for purchase, which is completely safe for use, by the gallon or quart. • Use area rugs in high traffic areas, and protect the footing of furniture to prevent scratching. • If your floor needs a shine, The Wood Floor Store can buff it and add a new finish that is maintenance-free. “My favorite part about this work is seeing the end product. It’s really rewarding,” said Roger. “I think that’s part of what sets us apart from other flooring choices, plus our longevity, business, knowledge and our customer service. We do what we say.”

Benefits of Online Banking

Convenience.

Life often takes place outside business hours. Need to transfer1 money into your account before dinner? No problem. At a soccer game and need to make sure the electric bill is paid? Check it instantly. You can also avoid late fees and set up automatic, recurring bill payments2. To access these features, call your bank or ask your bank representative to sign you up when you open an account.

Security. Industry standard bank technology protects your money

with firewalls, anti-virus protection, encryption, fraud monitoring and automatic logout, among other features. These create a strong defense against hackers who want to access your account. Scammers will also try to get information from you. Phone calls pretending to be the IRS, emails claiming the bank needs your account information, charity scams, sweetheart scams and wire fraud are only a few of the culprits. Don’t give information to anyone unless you are absolutely sure they are legitimate.

Flexibility.

The more time you save banking, the more time you can spend with your family, kids, friends or partner. Technology offers you the ability to customize your banking experience. If you only use your phone to check balances or make simple transfers, text banking3 is for you. Mobile deposit4 is perfect for those folks who need to deposit checks, but can’t make it into the bank. Depending on the bank, other services such as person-to-person5 payment systems and phone banking are also available. 1 Funds may not be available immediately. 2Some fees and restrictions apply. nvesting in quality shouldn’t break the bank. At Discount Garage Door, the pricing is perfect for quality and service, adding not only more value to your home or business, but your dollar as well. For over 20 years, the company has served the Tulsa area, providing highest-rated garage doors, openers, service, and repair for commercial and residential needs. Owner and Operator, Dustin Loyal, is proud of their name and what it stands for. “We are a local, honest family-owned company,” he said. “At Discount Garage, you get a discount on the price, not on quality or service.” Garage doors are available in a variety of options to beautify a home or business, including steel, fiberglass and aluminum, with a wide range of styles. One of the most popular designs for residential garage doors is an offering of wood look stains that include a 15-year finish warranty. A vast selection of wood stains can be applied for a customized look. Trusted brands such as Wayne Dalton, Doorlink, Genie, and Liftmaster are an integral part of the quality they provide. A fiveyear warranty is offered on all parts and labor. Dustin is no stranger to hard work and perseverance, having been farm-raised in Wellston, Oklahoma, and he built his company from the ground up with integrity and tenacity. He began his career in the garage door industry in Phoenix, AZ at a nationally owned garage door company, where he moved quickly through the ranks to management. In 2001, Dustin moved to Oklahoma City, and with a single ad in the Yellow Pages, Discount Garage Door was born. He expanded his business into Tulsa (continued on next page)

Famous Oklahomans BY CHRIS PUTMAN

O

klahoma is a state famous for some unusual reasons. It has more tornadoes than any other state. Who doesn’t know that one? It has a song that bares its name. It also has a boo coo load of famous people that come from within its borders such as singers, actors, athletes, astronauts, directors, politicians, entrepreneurs, criminals, and even evangelists.

Vince Gill

Blake Shelton

singers Top on the list has got to be Garth Brooks. Born in Tulsa, Brooks attended Oklahoma State University on an athletic scholarship to earn an advertising degree. While there, he performed in Oklahoma bars and clubs. Through a few discouraging false starts, Brooks got his breakthrough, and his career and popularity exploded. He is known not only for his most popular songs like “Friends in Low Places,” and “The Dance,” but for his concert performance. He wore a wireless mic that allowed him the freedom to run the stage, climb and swing wildly from props and speaker stacks. Using a recipe of rock, pop, and country, Brooks 40 |

Carrie Underwood

concocted his unique sound. It’s that signature sound that has earned him the title of one of the best-selling artists at a tune to 170 million records worldwide. He has received two Grammy Awards and 17 American Music Awards, to name a few. Brooks fan Susie Belcher attended a concert in a small concert hall when the star started to take off in the late 80s. She had to decide if it was worth the money and time standing in line for this relatively unknown artist just starting to grow in popularity. Needless to say, in hindsight, Belcher thinks it was definitely worth the investment in time and effort as it gave her bragging rights and a story to tell. “That boy sang his heart out, and I don’t believe he ever stood still,” Belcher said. “He was climbing

the speaker stacks on each end of the stage so he could sing to the people in the higher seats. Then he would run across the stage and go up the other stack. It was an amazing feat, and he kept singing the whole time. The thing that impressed me the most was about halfway through the show; he sent his band out to take a break. He grabbed an acoustic guitar, sat down at the front of the stage with his legs hanging off and started doing cover songs of other artists. He said this was his favorite part of the show.” Other Oklahoma singers include Norman-born Vince Gill, Adaborn Blake Shelton, Checotahnative Carrie Underwood, Tulsa-born Ryan Tedder, McAlester-born Reba McEntire, Okemah-born Woody Guthrie, and Claremore-born Patti Page.

musical rising stars True to his blue-collar roots, James Robert Webb walks the line between traditional and contemporary country music. Raised on a small farm outside of Tulsa, he grew up listening to a wide variety of Oklahomans including Bob Wills, Garth Brooks and Leon Russell. His sound is driven by his unique, indefinable voice and organic, neo-traditionalist style fused with modern production. His 2016 debut, Pictures, yielded two top-40 singles on the Music Row Country Breakout chart – “Makin’ Love Tonight” and “How That Feels.” Both broke the top 60 on the Billboard Indicator charts. In 2019, one of country music’s most awardwinning and renowned producer’s Buddy Cannon (Kenny Chesney,

Ryan Tedder

Reba McEntire

Woody Guthrie

Patti Page

Willie Nelson), took notice of Webb’s unique style. The pair recently finished recording a full-length project coming soon. “April May,” penned by Webb himself, is the latest release climbing the charts and is on the highly anticipated upcoming project. On June 22, 2020, he debuted in the Top 40 on the Billboard Country Indicator Chart with his fastest growing single “Think About It” off his recently released self-titled album produced by the iconic Buddy Cannon. This single has also charted Top 25 on the Music Row Country Breakout Chart, the third consecutive single off the current album to do so, and is No. 1 on the CDX True Indie Chart. It surpassed 200,000 streams on Spotify making it his top performing single, ever. When he’s not composing, singing, recording and producing music for himself and other artists – he is a busy Tulsa back doctor who treats vertebral fractures, provides prevention and treatment for Osteoporosis, back, neck and extremity pain; and related problems. His music has continued to attract new opportunities for the “easygoing giant.” He recently played Calf Fry 2019, was chosen to headline the Southfork Music Festival in Parker, Texas and continues to play across the country connecting directly with the fans. For more on James Robert Webb, go toJamesRobertWebb.com. A Tulsa native, Preslea Elliott has begun her debut as a singer/ songwriter with her recent single release “Subconscious.” After graduating from Cascia Hall in 2015, she found her way down south to Auburn University where she developed a love for music and performing. Majoring in Media Studies, she spent extensive time working on film projects mostly in front of the camera. Growing up, acting was a dream of hers and she aspired to eventually move to Los Angeles. That dream lives on as her transition into music has been one

James Robert Webb

of anticipation. She had been writing songs for years but had never had the courage to share them until one of her last courses in college assigned the class to write and produce a song. From there, she began to develop as an artist and began to gain attention from the local community. A few months later, she was playing shows in the Auburn/Opelika music scene and was asked to open for Jordy Searcy, a Nashville singer/songwriter featured on the Voice. Playing in front of nearly 500 people with no music yet released, Preslea knew something special was transpiring. Gaining confidence and momentum, she found herself in the studio working with producer PSILO honing in meticulously on the craft of songwriting to build a sonic foundation. And she believes it is strong one with her first release underway and new music coming very soon. (continued on next page)
