Berries Galore

Andy B’s free summer bowling promotion returns April 19 through August 29.

Huldy’s Farm grows strawberries, blueberries and blackberries, and is located at the northeast intersection of 590 Road and 4195 Road in Inola, with convenient access to Highway 412.

By Julie Alexander

By Sheryl Sowell Are you looking for a fun, wholesome activity the whole family will enjoy? Take pleasure in a day picking berries at Huldy’s Farm, a family owned

and operated berry farm in Inola, about 30 minutes east of Tulsa. Pack a picnic, have a wonderful time picking berries in the sunshine, and reap the benefits

when you return home. Make a blackberry pie, whip up a blueberry smoothie, or can your own strawberry jam – the possibilities are endless. “We are on a peaceful patch of land easily accessible from Highway 412,” said owner Gwen Gay. “If the Good Lord permits, strawberries may be ready late April, the blueberries should be available late May through early July, and the blackberries ready June through early August.” The farm is prepared to accomGwen and Gerald Gay, owners of Huldy’s Farm, at the Cherry Street Farmers (continued on page 24) Market in 2012.

Summer is right around the corner and parents are looking for fun activities to keep their little ones busy without breaking the bank. Andy B’s Entertainment Center has the answer and the best thing is, it’s free. Registration is currently underway for Andy B’s Kids Bowl Free summer bowling pass promotion. Kids of all ages can bowl for free all summer long. Manager Maggie Reasor said the program has been very popular and attracts hundreds of kids each week, and she expects this summer to be no different. It’s a great way to introduce kids to the sport of bowling, she said. “We have 32 lanes, and for the younger kids we have the ramps and bumpers so even the smaller ones can play.”

The program is a great way to keep kids entertained without spending a lot of money. Mom Tawny Webb said her son, three year-old Eli, loves to bowl and she started bringing him to Andy B’s last year. He learned to bowl on the family’s Wii game console, but now he loves to play the real thing. She heard about the Kids Bowl Free program and plans to sign Eli up this summer. She said even at age three, Eli is not too young to enjoy bowling, especially with the help of the ramp to launch the ball and the bumpers to keep it in the lane. “He was too young before,” she said. “He didn’t quite get the concept, but now he gets it and he loves it. He’s very patient and waits his turn. He’s really strong (continued on page 24)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

Which Money Personality Are You? BY MELANIE HASTYGRANT Money is a funny thing. Folks will tell you just about anything about themselves before they will talk about money. It is such a taboo topic that many parents don’t even talk about it with their children. Why is that? Is the topic really that delicate and intimate that it needs to be avoided? Will Smith said it best when he stated, “Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.” As sure as the sky is blue, money is a part of life. It has many personalities; here are a few! The High Roller – This is the type that is all in, no holding back. They believe that the bigger the risk, the better. They may win the jackpot, or they may go home with their tail between their legs. The thrill of the chase is the driving force behind this money personality. The Bean Counter – This person saves for a rainy day. They are bargain hunters. Bean Counters refuse to pay full price for clothing, food, or entertainment. They are sometimes perceived as a cheapskate. These folks are very resourceful. However, sometimes they miss out on the fun of living everyday life.

things. Money isn’t something to be afraid of. Being aware of your finances isn’t frightening. If you check regularly, they won’t be such a shock at the end of the month.

The Penny Priest – This group tends to have of strong religious or political ties in regards to their finances. They have been led to believe that money is the root of all evil. Good, bad or indifferent, money is a way to obtain basic necessities, and support charitable causes. The Budget Buster – These are the spenders of the group. They believe money is earned to be spent. Budget Busters have a spend first, think later mentality. Earning and spending money is part of life. Living above your means shouldn’t be! You don’t need to keep up with The Joneses. That is a slippery slope. The Duck and Cover – This money personality doesn’t want anything to do with finances. They ignore they even exist. Either they don’t feel at ease talking about the subject, or they feel as though their time is better spent on other

TTime for a Spring Checkup Aire Serv Heating & Cooling makes their best effort to understand and appreciate customers’ needs.

By Duane Blankenship Aire Serv® is a global franchise organization was established in 1992. Randy and Debi Raper are independent Aire Serv franchise owners/operators who provide installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and indoor air quality systems. The company provides quality service, replacements and installations for all brands to both residential and commercial customers throughout the Tulsa metro area. When necessary to call for service after business hours, we strive to call you back promptly.”

You’ll have the opportunity to make a decision that provides the best possible solution for your family. Spring is just around the corner and Aire Serv suggests that Aire Serv Technicians Jordan and Colton Raper treat customers with respect and integrity, and they are frequently complimented on how well they know the you schedule HVAC business.

The Rapers are proud of Aire Serv’s Code of Values that lists: Respect – treating others as we would like to be treated; Integrity – making commitments we intend to keep and operating in a responsible manner; and Customer Focus – continuously striving to maximize customer loyalty by genuinely appreciating

customer needs. “We strive to live by our Code of Values,” said Jordan. “We listen with the intent to understand what is being said and then acknowledge that we heard what is important to our customer.” Anyone can get stressed when their air conditioning or heating system is on the fritz. And why

two worthwhile inspections each year for your system, spring and fall checkups. Who would dream of not taking their vehicle in for recommended services? The same is true for your HVAC system. Spring and fall inspections put minds at ease, keep systems working at peak efficiency and can even extend system life while reducing utility bills. “Our Total Comfort Tune-Up is much less expensive than having to prematurely replace an entire system,” said Jordan. Aire Serv wants you to be comfortable year-round by keeping your HVAC system running smoothly. By Julie Alexander

Tulsa has a reputation as a city with a vibrant music scene. From red dirt and jazz to orchestral and opera, there is something for everyone. But Jan Dunkelberg learned there was something missing, especially for Tulsa’s older adults while serving as the senior center and active aging coordinator for LIFE Senior Services. She discovered many of the agency’s clients were missing out on Tulsa’s musical offerings. “Visiting with members of our senior centers, just casually, someone would mention that an artist was coming to the Performing Arts Center or someone was coming to the Jazz Hall of Fame to perform. And I was hearing people say, ‘I’m not going.’ It was too late in the evening or because it was downtown. It was a safety concern,” she said, explaining many of the center’s members preferred not to drive downtown, especially after dark. Dunkelberg had an idea to bring the music to the them, and LIFE’s Musical Mondays was born. Now in its 15th season,

the monthly concert series first kicked off with two concerts held in the sanctuary of East Side Christian Church. It has now grown into a series of five concerts. “The first year was a success and the goal was to extend the programming that we offer at our senior centers,” she said. “It filled part of our mission by offering entertainment that was suitable, convenient and affordable for the seniors we serve.” Dunkelberg is now retired from LIFE Senior Services, but is still the producer of the concert series. Her goal each year is to provide a variety of local music, and this year’s lineup is a testament to the talent of Tulsa area performers. The series kicks off April 18 with the contemporary and jazz stylings of Rick Fortner and Tavis Minner. Jazz singer Annie Ellicott takes the stage May 23. Pop, classical and gospel performed by Voices of Unity is scheduled for June 27. Olivia Duhon will perform standards

and jazz on July 25, and Sounds of Music Orchestra will round off the series with their big band sound on August 22. Performances are held at Cascia Hall’s Performing Arts Center, located at 26th Street and Utica Avenue. Doors open at 6 p.m. Performances begin at 7 p.m. Sponsors for this year’s concert series are Senior Star, Legend Senior Living, Oklahoma’s Methodist Manor, Community Care and Tapestry at Woodland Hills. Food Bank Event Seeks to Raise Two Million Meals

The 20th annual Empty Bowls Hunger Awareness Dinner and Auction will be held Tuesday, April 26 at the Cox Business Center.

By Kristin Ware To combat hunger in eastern Oklahoma, the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma is hosting the 20th annual Empty Bowls Hunger Awareness Dinner and Auction, set for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26 at the Cox Business Center. Through the fundraiser, the Food Bank

hopes to raise two million meals to feed those in need in eastern Oklahoma. With the aim of filling many Oklahoma bowls, this year’s Empty Bowls event, presented by the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, will support the

programs and projects of the Food Bank throughout the year. Approximately 654,000 Oklahomans, including one in four children, often don’t know where they will get their next meal. The event, which is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Food Bank, gives guests the opportunity to bid on one-ofa-kind works of art by some of the area’s most talented artists, autographed memorabilia, gift cards, gift baskets, high-end merchandise, and experience packages. The event includes a soup and salad dinner and guests receive a keepsake bowl, which serves as a reminder of the too many empty bowls of hungry Jason Glass (left) and Brian Hughes display handcrafted bowls, which Oklahomans. The event were created to represent the hunger in northeastern Oklahoma and will be available at the Food Bank’s Empty Bowls event. Glass and Hughes are will also include a raffle, restaurant chairing the 2016 event.

pull, and a wine pull. Tulsans that aren’t able to attend the event can still help feed hungry Oklahomans. Anyone can purchase raffle tickets for the Pick Your Paradise raffle. Tickets are $25 or five for $100, and the winner gets to choose one vacation package, selecting from New York City, Hilton Head, San Francisco or Santa Barbara. Tickets are available at www.okfoodbank. org and while a winner will be drawn at Empty Bowls, the winner does not need to be present to win. Additionally, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Empty Bowls, the board and staff at the Food Bank request that community members consider a one-time gift of $20. Donations can be made on the website. For each dollar raised at Empty Bowls, the Food Bank can distribute four meals. With administrative costs below four percent of the organization’s budget, every dollar donated impacts someone in need in eastern Oklahoma. With the Food Bank recently recognized by Charity Navigator as one of their 10 top-notch charities in the nation, donors can rest assured the Food Bank will provide a good return on investment.

Empty Bowls tickets start at $75 and sponsorships are available. Honorary Chairs Elliot and Meg Nelson join event co-chairs Jason Glass and Brian Hughes in presenting this event to the community. “Empty Bowls is a fun event for the community kick back and relax while also providing much-needed funds to support our efforts to feed eastern Oklahoma,” said Eileen Bradshaw, executive director of the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. “This event is crucial in supporting all of our programs, from the Food for Kids program to our produce initiatives – reaching across Green Country and beyond.”

Why Does It Hurt? And Why Are You Still Dealing with It? By Dr. David Fields I can't tell you how many times a day I get the question,“Why does it hurt, Doc?” We all know when something isn't working right in our bodies. Back pain, neck pain, headache, knee pain, shoulder pain, pain that shoots down into our legs or arms, and numbness plague so many of us. Some people chalk it up to past injury, or maybe just getting older, but the truth is that the vast majority of the time these are

biomechanical problems. Biomechanical really just means how our bodies move. All biomechanical problems boil down to two things. You are not in the right position and you don't move right. Imagine what would happen if you put a car tire on crooked and drove it down the street. Imagine all of the excessive wear and tear this would cause on your car, and the longer you drove it that way the worse it would get. Your body is the same way. If you are holding yourself in the wrong position, you won't work right. This will cause excess wear and tear on your joints, your muscles, your tendons, your discs in your spine, and on your nerves. So now the next question is,"How do we get that way?" For most people it boils down to what you do all day. As we go through our lives we start some bad habits. We lift incorrectly or too much or too repetitively. We sit for long periods of time with bad posture. We get out of shape. Sometimes we sustain an injury that changes the way we walk or move like a limp or lean to avoid the pain. Over a long period of time our bodies change, our posture changes, the way we move changes, and we literally retrain our bodies into a bad pattern of movement. As I mentioned before this is what leads to the wear and tear that causes our symptoms. So, if you

have been told you have a herniated disc, arthritis, tendinitis, carpal tunnel, sciatica, degenerative joint disease, lumbalgia or the like...now you know why and how. So what now? Are you stuck like that forever? Do you just have to learn how to live with your condition? Do you have to keep taking meds until it gets bad enough that you need surgery? Absolutely not! The solution is simple. It is in fact the opposite process of how you got like that in the first place. You have to retrain your body to work correctly again. First we have to reduce your pain with things like heat, massage, ultrasound, and electrotherapy. We can even take the pressure off of your discs with our state of the art decompression machine. Next we have to get those joints back in place and moving freely with manipulation (also called an adjustment). Then we start in on the rehabilitation. Rehabilitation addresses the muscles. Since the muscles are the things that position your body and do the movement, we need to train them. By doing specific stretches and exercises, we can reprogram your body so that you actually move right again. This will bring you back to normal and stop all of that excessive wear and tear. If you are having any of these biomechanical problems, if you are sick of taking pain meds, if you are wanting to avoid a surgery, then please call us and let us get you back to normal.

ASK MELLA AT MY CHOICE REAL TIPS FOR SENIORS LIVING INDEPENDENTLY

It’s a Good Life with Organization! Spring brings a fresh outlook and the opportunity to refresh your wardrobe. How can I get started on my closet? • You will need to define 3 areas to clearly sort the items in your closet. The first area should be the KEEP area. The second is the charity DONATE area and the third is the Goodwill area. These areas need to be close to the closet you are sorting. The donate items and the Goodwill items can be placed in large trash bags. When you finish you can drag these bags to the door and call the charities to come pick them up. • Grab the first group of hangers, or shoes, belts, scarves, and sort each item into one of the three piles. You only keep what fits right now, what you will actually wear, and does not need repair. If you have not repaired it by now it probably needs to go. • Be honest about your size. If the pants don’t fit you must donate! Are the shoes uncomfortable or will the blouse not button? Donate. Do not keep an item because you paid a lot for it and do not want to waste money.

Hanging in your closet and not being worn means this item has become worthless, give it a second life by donating or consigning it. There are clothing consignment stores where you give them your usable clothing and they sell it for you at a price they determine. • Now that you have sorted all your closet items, take time to vacuum and dust the shelves. It is amazing how much lint builds up. • When putting your closet back together, organize in a way that makes sense to you. This can be done by putting outfits together, or all of your pants in one place, your shirts in another, etc. Remember to put clothes that are seldom used in the back. High Tech Makes Dental Appointments Faster & Easier Same day crowns and soft tissue lasers are two technologies that make going to the dentist more convenient. By Dr. Steven White Dentistry today has become more convenient, more effective and more comfortable – all major reasons to NOT fear going to the dentist. There are many technologies that we have invested in to bring the best state-of-theart care to our patients. I would like to introduce you to two of them. Same Day Crowns Digital impressions make it possible to produce porcelain crowns and onlays in 1 appointment. We can now take an impression with a camera, instead of the messy, gaggy impression materials you have had to put up with for so long. The picture the camera takes allows us to make a restoration while you wait – or we can complete other dental treatment needed during this “while you wait” time. There are numerous advantages for you with this new technology. The impressions are far more accurate, making the fit of the crowns even better. The impression taking process is much easier and less messy. Also, you only need to get your mouth numb one time and you don’t have to wear a temporary crown while the permanent one is being made. And, you only have to make one trip instead of two.

Different lasers perform varied functions. Our laser performs various treatments on the cheeks, lips, and gum tissue. We utilize it to trim excess gum tissue and make impression taking more precise. We can remove tissue growths and break up pigmentations (discolorations) in the lips and cheeks. The laser can also treat herpetic lesions – cold sores and fever blisters, by shortening the duration and reducing the pain they cause. Another opportunity for the laser is in helping to treat gum disease. As part of our deep cleaning procedures, the laser is used in the infected gums to help create an environment to help the gums heal more effectively.

• WE WELCOME NEW PATIENTS • EMERGENCIES SEEN SAME DAY • FULL RANGE OF SERVICES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY • FREE CONSULTATIONS AND SECOND OPINIONS

These are just two ways we are seeking to bring the newest advancements in dental treatment to our deserving patients. We invite you to call us today or visit our website to learn more about our services and become part of our dental family. No Insurance, No Problem! Quality Dentistry Made Affordable! The Best Money Management Habit Ever

“Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.

By Jocelyn Wood Who wants to save more money? To do so, we have to spend less, which can be accomplished in a number of ways. • Avoid impulse shopping. • Eliminate unwanted expenses, e.g., late charges, convenience fees. • Set up automatic money transfers to a savings account. But when we get down to the nitty-gritty of daily life, watching our spending habits can get lost in the moment. Just this week, I made three trips to my local superstore in a 72-hour period. Did I need to? At the time, I could justify each urgent need. Looking at my bank account balance, now I’m not so sure each trip was an absolute necessity. So how do we fix our psychological need versus want versus necessity battle that keeps chipping away at our finances? We start by using the best money management tool ever – the checkbook register (or its contemporary electronic clone). Tracking your money is the most important habit to develop. It takes a little time, but the benefit is financially rewarding. Here are

four reasons, from bankers who swear by their checkbook registers, why you should take a closer look at your daily finances. Reason No. 1. – Help curb impulse shopping and recognize wasteful spending habits. “You can make plans and budgets, but they don’t always go as you intend,” said Wayne Webster, VP, Commercial Loans, RCB Bank. “Your checkbook register offers an honest look at your spending history. For instance, you may not realize you’re spending $50 a month at the coffee shop. To see it written down, right there, may be motivation to cut back. Anytime I’m about to spend money, I look at my register and know exactly where I stand.” Reason No. 2 – Know your actual account balance. “There are a lot of ways to interact with your checking account – debit cards, ATM withdrawals, checks, auto debits and online bill pay,” said Shelly Fields, Retail Coordinator, RCB Bank. “My register is the only way to keep an accurate balance at any given time.” “It takes a matter of seconds to write down my expenses in my

register before I leave the store,” added Webster. “Online and text banking don’t know if I wrote a check yesterday, or have an auto debit scheduled for next week. If I’m just spending and not tracking, and not comparing it with my budget, I may run into trouble.” Reason No. 3 – Fraud, mistakes, fees and unwanted expenses can slip through the cracks if you don’t stay involved in your finances. “You could be a victim of fraud, or a simple mistake can happen at any given time,” said Brenda Romesburg, Customer Service Rep, RCB Bank. “Scammers can alter checks or run debit cards for more than requested. Keeping a close eye on your account and keeping your own personal ledger can help prevent you from losing money.” Reason No. 4 – Your financial footprint is in your credit report. “The harsh reality is that how you manage your money is part of your credit history,” said Richard Jackson, Mortgage Loan Closer, RCB Bank. “It can take as little as 15 minutes a week to compare your checkbook register with your

online banking account so you can stay on top of your finances.” Getting started is easy. Pick up a checkbook register from your bank, download a money register app or create your own register with a notepad. Each day, enter all your money transactions. Using a checkbook register keeps Evette Add a little note Kelley, of Tulsa, in control of her finances. to help you clarify your expenses. Review your register with your bank statement For more information, contact each month and double check errors. Taking this step will put RCB Bank you on track to improving your financial well-being. 855-BANK-RCB Opinions expressed above are www.RCBbank.com the personal opinions of the author and persons interviewed and meant www.ValueNews.com for generic illustration purposes only. SSip, Savor & Shop Taste of Claremore returns to Downtown April 30. By Sheryl Sowell The always-popular Sip, Savor & Shop: Taste of Claremore returns to downtown Claremore on April 30, offering an opportunity to sample local fare while enjoying the shopping offered in the downtown district. The three-hour food and shopping stroll begins at 6 p.m. and spans the three blocks of downtown along Will Rogers Boulevard. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 on the day-of while children five years and younger sampling off an adult’s plate are free. Tickets will go on sale in the participating downtown stores mid-April. In addition to the food and shopping, the evening will feature a variety of sidewalk entertainment by talented local musicians. “We are really excited about the Taste of Claremore this year,” said Jessica Jackson, Claremore Main Street Executive Director. “It is a perfect event to showcase the great shopping opportunities downtown as well as the wonderful dining options and local talent we have here in Claremore. It’s truly an event for all the senses!”

In 2015, more than 25 local restaurants and wineries set up inside various downtown stores and businesses, showcasing samples to the hundreds of people sipping, savoring and shopping.

Jeannie Smith, owner of The Grapevine in downtown Claremore, is a member of the event’s planning committee and said this event is one of her favorites downtown has to offer.

“It brings the community together in a fun and relaxing family atmosphere, all while discovering what our downtown has to offer,” Smith said. Sip, Savor & Shop: Taste of

Claremore is family-friendly, but also a great date night option or a fun girls’ night activity, said Dell Davis, President and CEO of the Claremore Area Chamber of Commerce. “We love any occasion to bring the musicians from the area out to show off the talent we have right here in Rogers County,” Davis said. “This is just a great event for families, couples or anyone who loves Claremore and all it has to offer.” Sip, Savor & Shop: Taste of Claremore is hosted by Claremore Main Street and the Claremore Area Chamber of Commerce, both of which are non-profit organizations in town. Proceeds of the event go to support the organization’s individual missions. It is sponsored by the City of Claremore, moreClaremore.com and RCB Bank. For more information, including a list of restaurants, musicians and participating stores as the event draws closer, visit www.downtownclaremore.org or call Claremore Main Street at 918-341-5881.

Q & A with Financial Advisor Linda Rainwater Q:

I may be getting laid off from my job. How much money should I set aside? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. -Nervous Nelly

A:

Typically, 3 – 6 months living expenses is what you want to keep on hand in case of a rainy day, a possible lay off could count as a storm! This is a very good time to review your current financial situation and future opportunities. What have you always wanted to do? Do you have the resources and support system in place to retrain or follow your heart and pursue your dream job? Make an appointment with a financial advisor to help calculate possible scenarios. I advise meeting with 4 – 5 financial advisors until you find one who: 1. You trust 2. Is looking out for your best interest and 3. Invests their own money. Bring the following documents to the appointment with each financial advisor: investment account statements, company retirement plan statements, bank and CD statements, recent pay stubs, pension statements, annuity contracts, home mortgage information, all debt payments, most recent tax returns, insurance policy statements, Social Security retirement benefits estimate, stock certificates, savings bonds, and any other pertinent financial information. Ask them to review your current situation and answer the following questions: Do you have enough to retire comfortably if you receive a reduction in force or layoff notice? Should you work full-time or part-time if you are terminated from your current position? By using numbers derived from your current earning and spending patterns, a good financial advisor will give you the information needed to make a wise and informed decision on your potential future choices. Then you can plan ahead peacefully in the event that this change occurs in your life. Not knowing the future can be intimidating, but having the information to face the situation can smooth your journey ahead.

Q:

I receive lots of letters recommending low priced stocks in the mail. What do you think, are these good investments? – Wondering William

A:

I also receive quite a lot of correspondence recommending low priced stocks. I saved all of this type of mail for one year and put it away in a drawer. After two years I reviewed all of the investments suggested and not one company was still in business. Good opportunities rarely advertise using this method.

Huldy’s welcomes birthday parties and family reunions, and customers are always welcome to bring their own picnic lunches and snacks. Huldy’s Farm has a unique history. Marty Johnson grew up on the land where the farm is located, at the corner of 4195 Road and 590 Road. Marty retired as a Tulsa Police Officer and was working in the Human Resources Department at the City of Tulsa, and his wife, Gwen, was a Human Resources Director at Kaiser-Francis Oil Company. As Marty and Gwen

continued from page 1 were approaching retirement, Gwen began thinking about the possibility of having a blueberry farm, as her uncle had a small farm in Louisiana. The couple jumped into the venture and began preparing the land in the summer of 2005. However, only a few short months later, Marty was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma to the brain. Gwen and their daughter, Erin, dropped everything to take care of Marty, who passed away in May 2007. About a year later, Gwen and Erin met for lunch, and Gwen asked Erin what she thought about restarting the blueberry farm idea. Erin was supportive, and the berry farm journey was reignited. Erin chose the name for the

In March 2010, again with the help of Erin, friends, neighbors, and Gwen’s Sunday School Class, the first patch of blueberries were planted. In 2011, Gwen met and married Gerald Gay, and in the following years, they added blackberries and strawberries to the farm. In addition to helping Gerald take care of Gwen, Erin helped pick berries for customers and ran the “berry hut,” where customers pick up buckets for picking, return to pay for their berries and have them packaged for taking home. “I am so grateful for all of the help by my family, friends, and employees during my recovery. OHCE Friendship Day

The annual event will include knitting and basket weaving classes on May 2.

By Julie Alexander At 90 years young, Mary Ellen Kingdom is an active community volunteer for several local organizations. But she always makes time for knitting, her favorite hobby. She will pass along her knowledge during a class on May 2 at the OSU Extension Center. Friendship Day is held annually by Oklahoma Home Community Education. The

one-day event includes classes in basket weaving and knitting, and there will be information booths set up for those interested in joining OHCE. Membership dues are $23 per year. Last year’s Friendship Day was a huge success, and Membership Chair Kathy Erwin is hoping to attract even more participants this year. A member

of the group for 33 years, Erwin’s involvement began when she was a small child. “My grandmother used to take me to her meetings, when they were called home demonstrations meetings,” she said, adding the groups were later called home extension clubs. Founded in 1935, the OHCE is a group dedicated to strengthening families through education and community service. But the group’s roots date back to the late 19th century. Life was tough in the 1890s, and women depended on each other for advice and help keeping their families intact. They formed different clubs to share information about growing vegetables, canning, sewing and other household necessities. As the number of women (L to R): Yvonne Dulaney, Mary Ellen Kingdom and Kathy Erwin invite you involved grew, their importance was to OHCE’s annual Friendship Day.

recognized by the US Department of Agriculture and the Cooperative Extension Service was formed in the1930s. As membership in these groups grew, so did the quality of life for many families, especially the children. The main areas of concern were nutrition, disease diagnosis, child development and other issues of the day that were considered life threatening. The main objective was the health and happiness of the American family. And more than a century later, the goals of the OHCE remain very much the same, said Erwin. Kingdom, who will teach a knitting class on Friendship Day, said the OHCE has become an integral part of the community by helping local non-profits. The Tulsa area has seven different groups, each meeting once a month in various locations and each taking a local charity under its wings. Kingdom’s group, the Candleliters, contributes to Happy Hands, a school for hearing impaired children 6 and younger. “Every meeting we bring toilet paper, paper towels, computer paper and stamps and we deliver them to the school,” she said. “One year I sewed costumes for their Christmas play. Other clubs do different things for other groups.” Other area non-profits that receive help from OHCE include the Tulsa MS Walk, Quilts of Valor, the Jenks Food Bank and the Tulsa County Emergency Shelter. They also provide scholarships to area students. With more than 86 members

in the Tulsa area, the individual groups meet monthly and present programs on a variety of topics, including meal planning and preparation, estates and wills, and more. The OHCE is one of the main sponsors of the Tulsa County Free Fair, held each July at the Tulsa Fairgrounds Exchange Center. Held in conjunction with area 4H clubs, participants compete in more than 100 categories including baking, canning, sewing, quilting, horticulture, and photography. It’s free and open to the public. The deadline to register for the Friendship Day classes is April 15. The day includes two four-hour classes. Participants can choose from knitting or basket weaving. Class size is limited. The event is from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, May 2 at the OSU Extension Center, 4116 E. 15th St. in Tulsa. The cost is $10 per person and includes class supplies and lunch. To register, send a check payable to OHCE-TC with your class preference written in the memo line to OHCE-TC, 4312 East 67th Street, #565, Tulsa, OK, 74136.

PPlant Your Feet in Jenks The Jenks Herb & Plant Festival will be Saturday, April 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Jenks.

By Sheryl Sowell Attention all gardeners, plant lovers, and wannabe green thumbs! Widely anticipated as the official start to spring, the Jenks Herb & Plant Festival will be held Saturday, April 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Jenks. Organizers are excited to be celebrating the festival’s 20th year. Main Street literally turns green from the long line of booths brimming over with hundreds of flats of herbs of every variety, vegetables of all kinds – especially tomatoes – to get your garden started, flowers, shrubs and trees, garden decorations, and all the essentials. This one-day, free event hosted by Jenks Garden Club brings thousands of spring shoppers into downtown Jenks each year. The family-friendly event will feature 100 vendors this year, and to make shopping a whole lot easier, a shop and drop station will be available. An exciting new addition to the festival will be the USDA Food Safety Discovery Zone from Washington, D.C. The Zone program incorporates the Be Food Safe campaign with a 40-foot interactive vehicle where

consumers can enter and learn about food safety in a fun and engaging way. The Jenks Kiwanis Club will be flipping pancakes from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at First Methodist Church, 415 E. Main St. Several food vendors will be available for hungry shoppers, offering festival staples such as burgers, barbecue, funnel cakes, ice cream and fresh lemonade. Helen Madden, a charter member of the Jenks Garden Club, which began 28 years ago, says the event has a relaxed, wholesome atmosphere due to the quaint setting of downtown Jenks. “It almost feels like a reunion every year. You are certain to run into people you haven’t seen in a while.” Dixie Grahlman, president of the Jenks Garden Club, adds, “The festival has grown so much since club member Bill Twilley said 20 years ago that our club should hold an event like this. We started with a couple of tables of plants, and now an estimated 10,000 people attend each year.” Special edition T-shirts commemorating the 20th anniversary of the event will be on sale for $20.

Jenks Garden Club members welcome you to the 20th annual Jenks Herb & Plant Festival on Saturday, April 23. (L to R): Helen Madden, charter member; Sherry Bonner, vice president; and Dixie Grahlman, president. Relaxing acoustic music will fill the air as people of all ages enjoy a spring day outside in beautiful downtown Jenks. Of course, sunshine would be ideal, but the festival is held rain or shine. Mark your calendar now to attend this free event. Membership to the Jenks Garden Club is open to anyone interested in gardening, novice

to master. Dues are $15 per year, due by the second meeting you attend. Jenks Garden Club meets the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Jenks City Hall. In addition to their beautification projects, the club provides a $2,000 scholarship each year to a Jenks High School FFA member pursuing a horticultural degree.

American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women 2016 Saves Lives The annual luncheon will be held Friday, May 13, 2016.

By Mary Waller Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. Fortunately, this can change, because 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes.

Value News readers can help. All it takes to impact a life is getting more informed about the risks of heart disease and stroke. Learn the red flags. Know your own personal family “heart health story.” And don’t be afraid to talk to your

family, friends or physician if you become concerned about anything “out of the ordinary” health-wise for you. We are fortunate to have a strong chapter of the American Heart Association (AHA) here in Tulsa. The mission of the AHA is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. That single purpose drives everything their team does. Growing out of that mission is a focus on heart-health education and wellness for females, known as the Go Red for Women campaign. Each spring, they coordinate a major fundraising event that supports community-wide health awareness programs and activities. “The need for AHA’s work and our support is beyond question,” said John “Jay” Foley, COO of Cancer Treatment Centers of America and the 2015 Go Red for Women Chair, with the help of his wife, Nita. “My passion for AHA comes from how heart disease has affected my life. When I was 15, my father died of cardiac arrest in front of my family in our living room. It led me to become an EMT in college, and to pursue a career in emergency medicine after graduation. As an EMT, I responded to many cardiac emergencies and witnessed the toll it took on the families that were left behind.” According to Foley, his maternal grandfather died of a cardiac arrest when he was still in grammar school. “Seven years ago, my sister also collapsed in her home in front of her family from a cardiac event and passed away. She was in her mid-50s and was otherwise in excellent health. “Nita and I are asking our friends, neighbors, co-workers and fellow business and civic leaders to join the Go Red movement – to unite to prevent heart disease and stroke,” said Foley. “Our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends are at risk. With the arrival of April weather comes a chance to garden

Women More Likely to Experience Other Heart Attack Symptoms – Know the Signs According to the AHA, women are more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms. That’s why it’s important to know the signs of heart attack in women so you can recognize them early: •

Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
