QUALITY THAT COUNTS

By Jillian Moore Joel and Kendra Wiland opened J. David Jewelry in Broken Arrow, OK, with just three rings and $500. Now, 20 years later, they own and operate that same store, as well as their newest location in south Tulsa. At just 15, Joel began his

career in the jewelry industry as an independent jeweler for corporate companies. His time and experience in the corporate world helped him learn that while he loved what he did, there were many things he intended to do differently in his own store. Joel wanted to offer a level of quality that shoppers wouldn’t find anywhere else. His unique corporate experience allowed him to discover an untapped area in the jewelry market. Like all

merchandise, jewelry is made to make a profit, and unfortunately, this means many pieces of jewelry can sometimes be of lesser quality. Luckily for J. David Jewelry shoppers, Joel decided this ideology was clearly not in people’s best interest. “When everything is mass produced to get it as cheap as it can possibly be, there are a lot of people who compete for that business. We don’t,” Joel said. “It comes back to the best quality they can get for their money. I love to say that we’ll never be the cheapest because to be the cheapest you have to be the worst. We get people the very best for the least.” Joel chooses to live by the philosophy, “It’s better to have one dollar from 100 people than $100 from one person”. His team chooses not to focus on the amount of money someone is willing to spend, but on ensuring they’re getting the best quality for their budget. This is one fundamental element that sets J. David Jewelry’s customer service apart.

“We show unconditional love for our people, our process and our product,” Joel assures. “It’s very important that it’s in that order. Our business wouldn’t exist without the individuals who work here.” Customers who shop at J. David Jewelry can count on receiving individualized service centered around finding a piece they love and will be happy with for the rest of their life. Joel tries to be as accommodating as possible for those who may have inconvenient schedules. He’s even willing to take samples to someone’s business and return with the gift-wrapped item of their choice. Visit the associates at J. David Jewelry for a top-notch experience and quality product. By Jillian Moore You’ve fought the lines on Black Friday and searched every store in the mall, but somehow still have a few names on your holiday gift list. So, where else can shoppers go to check off not just one name, but all of them? “We’re not everything to everybody, but we have something for everybody,” Jim McClure, owner of Drysdales Western Wear said. Jim has owned two Tulsa Drysdales locations for 35 years, and knows there are treasures to be found in every corner of his stores. From casual and traditional western apparel to unique home goods and children’s toys, you’ll find the perfect gift for every loved one at Drysdales during this holiday season. “One thing I’ve always said is Drysdales is a onestop-shop,” said Leigh Ann Offield, Senior Ladies Buyer at Drysdales. “They can get an array of gifts for the whole family.” Going to a store with so many options can be a little overwhelming, however, so where do you begin? At the boots, of course. “Nowhere else do you see this many boots, so psychologically you know what you want is here, you just have to look for it,” Jim explains. “It’s not like going in a store where they only have four pairs.” When Jim says you’ll see a lot of boots, he means it. With more than forty thousand pairs, Drysdales offers customers seemingly endless options for style, size and color. Values JANUARY DECEMBER 2016 ? 10| | VALUES 2017

Drysdales has all the best selling brands like Justin, Tony Lama, Ariat, Lucchese, Twisted X, Dan Post, Anderson Bean and more. If you’re looking past traditional western boots, you can visit the extensive selection of both steel and non-steel toed work boots, as well as fire resistant footwear. The choices don’t stop there because Drysdales has plenty of boots for the youngsters on your list starting at just $29.99. Of course, when you think of western wear, you think of denim. There isn’t a fit or style you won’t be able to find, with more than one-hundred thousand pairs of jeans to pick from. According to Jim, he tells shoppers, “If you need denim, come and get ‘em.” Drysdales has everything from Levi’s and Wrangler to Big Star and Miss Me brands. When looking for more clothing options, you can find brands like Under Armour, Carhartt and other popular lines of leisure and workwear. Shoppers can also buy items online and pick them up at either Drysdales location on 32nd and Memorial or 71st and Highway 169. The friendly staff at Drysdales invites you to come and see the array of products and services they offer for all your holiday gift-giving needs.

From hats to boots, Drysdales has a vartiey of gifts for everyone on your list.

THE TOP THREE REASONS

TO BUY A CAR

BEFORE YEAR’S END By Erica Ludwig Like most retailers, car dealerships everywhere push for those year-end deals. But what exactly makes the end of the year specials so different? Chad Jennings, General Manager of Green Country Mitsubishi in Bixby, says that it’s all about financing and inventory. “You know, everybody always wonders when the best time of month is to buy a car, but the time of year is easy because it’s always the end of the year,” he said. “Manufacturers are always pushing for their sales numbers by December 31, because they’re trying to close out the previous year’s models.” According to Chad, the financing on last year’s vehicles will be the best it’s been for the entire year. With dealers needing to make room for next year’s models, they don’t want to carry last year’s inventory into the New Year. “This really helps those who need a tax write off the for the end of the year, whether it be business or not. This is really the best time to do that,” he said. Another benefit of buying a car at year’s end is manufacturers are pushing for incentives, meaning the rebates on new models will be at their absolute highest. “Manufacturers and dealers don’t want a dip in sales as they sell out of the previous year models, so the rebate will be higher on the new models as well,” said Chad. “They’re trying to get ready for the year end change.” Values JANUARY DECEMBER 2016 ? 14| | VALUES 2017

Finally, Chad advises those in the market to get a new vehicle before the end of the year because dealers are willing to take less money in order to clear out their current inventory. With the usual push starting a week before Thanksgiving, the sooner customers get in, the better. “Dealers like myself, we’re trying to sell as many units as possible for that final, year end figure,” Chad said. “You know, there’s so much that goes into the advertising that manufacturers do to show year over year growth. Consumer spending is obviously up during the holidays with buying Christmas presents, so they have to be more aggressive with their approach, which is why they emphasize the high rebates. People also like to be the first with the newest model and this is the time of year to do that.” The dealership is committed to the original mission of community and service by providing quality products and services to their customers. They accommodate customers by providing extended store hours from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Chad and the rest of the staff at Green Country Mitsubishi invite you to stop by and shop their endof-year deals while supplies last for a very happy new year.

FINANCIALLY FIT Are You Financially Prepared to Live A Long Life? By Jocelyn Wood By the year 2040, it is projected that 14.6 million Americans will live to 85 years old or older. This is triple in population from 6.5 million in 2014, according to the Administration of Aging. Are you prepared financially to live longer? If you’re age 20 or older, retirement planning should be one of your top priorities. Not sure where to begin? I asked Nate Haberman, AAMS® Financial Advisor at RCB Wealth Management to share a few tips. FIGURE OUT YOUR RETIREMENT INCOME NEEDS. Use your current expenses as a starting point. Don’t forget to factor in items like travel,

16 16 || Values Values DECEMBER DECEMBER 2016 2016

new vehicles and healthcare expenses. “A financial plan does not have to be complicated,” Haberman said. “Its purpose is to help you get from where you are to where you want to go, as well as improve the odds that you won’t outlive your money in retirement.” INVEST IN YOUR EMPLOYER-SPONSORED RETIREMENT PLAN OR AN INDIVIDUAL RETIREMENT ACCOUNT. START NOW. “It can be hard to plan for retirement when you are living paycheck to paycheck,” said Haberman. “But, a small amount is better than no amount. Setting aside a little bit each month will add up in

the long run, especially if your employer matches a percentage of your contributions.” BUILD AN EMERGENCY FUND. Prepare for the unexpected and avoid tapping into your retirement savings. “At one time or another, an expense will come up that you didn’t plan for - car repair or hospital visit,” said Haberman. “An emergency fund is there to help manage the financial risks of unforeseen expenses and potentially lessen some stress. Plus, early withdrawals from retirement accounts often have tax penalties assessed to them.” REVISE YOUR PLAN ALONG THE WAY. Life happens. Plan, prepare,

review and adjust regularly in order to stay on track of your goals. “A professional advisor can assist you through realistic expectations in your planning, while taking into consideration items like the age you plan to retire, inflation and taxes,” said Haberman. “A professional can walk you through all the available tools so you can better understand your options.” While having a plan doesn’t guarantee a successful retirement, it may help you alleviate possible hardships, and allow you to live the life you want during your golden years. FOSTER PARENTS • Must be able to cook just enough for kids. • Do things that your kid enjoys. • Drop them off at a park with husband or wife while running errands. • Must keep child clothed and fed. • Keep them busy. • Keep them in touch with case worker. • Feed their bad habits with kindness and good. • Help them learn the good habits of life.

Hopefully the child that you are fostering will go home. In response to a school assignment to write an ad, a 10-year-old girl answers the question through the eyes of a foster child who was recently adopted.

18 | Values DECEMBER 2016

Leslie Yocham, agency training and recruiting supervisor at Choices for Life Foster Care, is often asked what it takes to become a therapeutic foster parent. In response to a school assignment to write an ad, a 10-year-old girl answers the question through the eyes of a foster child who was recently adopted. Through the eyes of a professional, Leslie adds, “patience, understanding and the willingness to ask for help to do what is best for a child in need.” Foster parents from all walks of life have answered the call and experienced some of the most difficult, yet rewarding, challenges in their lives. Choices for Life, with offices in Sapulpa, Ponca City, Checotah and Oklahoma City, focuses on children with a higher level of emotional and behavioral issues. Statewide, there are more than 130 children ranging from 4 to 17—many of them native Americans-- awaiting therapeutic foster care. All come with their own adversities through no fault of their own. Their issues range from extreme neglect to verbal and sexual abuse. Their special needs require special care that is not available through traditional foster channels. “Most of these kids have had unique and traumatic experiences far beyond their years,” says Leslie. “Imagine the feeling of a kid being picked up at school by state workers. The parents have been arrested. The child does not have a chance to say good-by to anyone, leaving school with strangers and only the clothes on his or her back.” The sooner they are placed in therapeutic foster care, the sooner they can start rebuilding their lives. Each child is carefully evaluated and then matched with a strong and stable foster family who will nurture the child to heal, grow CHOICES FOR LIFE 724 S. By Erica Ludwig Throughout history, stars have served as a symbol of hope. From shepherds in the field, to the ancient Greeks, to even Peter Pan finding his way back to Neverland, stars have always been there to offer comfort and light to those who need it. Tulsa’s rising star, Brian Nhira, captured the hearts of millions with his rendition of “Jesus Loves Me” on the 10th season of NBC’s Emmy awarding winning show, “The Voice”. With a contagious laugh, infectious smile and electric personality, it’s no question why he’s been recognized by notable names like Voice coaches Pharrell Williams and Adam Levine as well as Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic and Jon Foreman of Switchfoot. “It’s just dreams coming true,” said Brian. “Being on the Voice and being exposed to the work ethic of Adam and Pharrell was such a blessing. Then Ryan and Jon have always been the blueprint that I’ve used in my musical journey. Looking at their careers and just the way that they’ve conducted themselves and conducted their music, I’ve looked at them and said, ‘I want my career to look like that’. Obviously I’m not in a rock band, but to have Ryan say something while I was on ‘The Voice’ and then Jon just recently on Twitter say he listened to my stuff and to compliment my voice, that’s just incredible.” Brian started singing in churches at just age four. By the time he reached high school, he had fallen in love with music, participating in show choir and musicals like “All Shook Up”. The Jenks graduate continued using his gift through college, where he was involved with ORU Live and singing for local churches. Tulsans watched the rest of America fall in love with Brian during his time on “The Voice” in the spring of 2016. When reflecting on his experience on the show, Brian is nothing but thankful. “It’s been a dream come true,” said Brian. “’The Voice’ was really my introduction to America, my introduction to this music industry, and everyone has to have one of those. It’s amazing to have the opportunity to be in the position that I’m in right now, to be building the way that we are. “ Since his time on the show, Brian has signed with Abrams Artist Agency in New York, looking to gain further experience in acting. Though his travels take him to the east and west coasts, the 24 year old looks

forward to another Christmas in Tulsa, where he will be hosting his own, recently sold-out, Christmas concert at the Tulsa PAC. Patrons can expect the feelings of a winter wonderland at the Liddy Doenges Theatre. “I love the sights and sounds of Christmas, and we want to convey that,” said Brian. “It’s a smaller theatre, so it’ll be a lot more intimate, it’ll feel like you’re right in the middle of everything that’s going on.” “This concert will feature a collection of the most popular pop Christmas tunes as well as some of the classics performed by ‘Voice’ alumni Brian Nhira (Season 10), Alaska and Madi (Season 6), Kristen Marie (Season 10), Chelsea Gann (Season 10), Malik Heard (Season 10), and local talent Jesse Graver; in addition to Brian Nhira’s live band,” said Jasper Nhira, business director for Brian Nhira music. Part of the proceeds from this concert will go toward the collection of backpacks and school supplies for grade school children in Zimbabwe, Africa. Due to the first show being sold out, Brian has added a second show from 9-10:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $20 reserved seating and $25 for floor seating. Tickets can be purchased at the Tulsa PAC website. As for what’s next, Brian is preparing to move to Los Angeles with his brother, Jasper. He will also be releasing new music and music videos in the New Year to continue his goal to bring people hope when they need it most. “I hope that when people talk about my legacy that they say that he was a voice for the voiceless, that he brought hope in everything that he did,” Brian said. Come walk in a winter wonderland this Christmas with Brian Nhira and friends from ‘The Voice.”

HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES AT T H E C A S T L E

Celebrate the best of family holiday traditions at The Castle of Muskogee. Take a leisurely drive through the Castleton Village, which is filled with thousands of holiday lights and displays. The drive through is free, and donations are gratefully accepted. Outside The Castle, you can take a hayride, hop aboard the Castle Train, or ride the ponies through the Village area. Venture inside The Castle for family holiday activities: bring your kids to make ornaments in Santa’s workshop, warm up by the fireplace, and plan your visit with Father Christmas. Go in the Castle Cafe for a light supper or snack, hot chocolate and treats, and great company! Sit and enjoy complimentary holiday movies for the whole family. “We’ve set everything up for families to have some down time,” said Jeffrey Hiller, Castle of Muskogee Owner. “We all tend to get lost in the Christmas rush, so our goal is for the families to spend some quality time together. The results we’ve

seen have been incredible.” In nearby Honor Heights Park, the “Garden of Lights” attracts thousands of visitors. The celebration includes a free drive-through display of over a million shimmering lights exhibited throughout the park. Internationally known for its Azalea Festival, Honor Heights Park draws up to a half million annual visitors to its scenic hilltop drive, which encompasses nearly 30,000 azalea bushes and thousands of trees. Christmas lights are placed on trees, bushes and structures throughout the park to enhance the natural beauty of the gardens, waterfalls and ponds. Gates open at 6:00pm nightly, and the event is free. Drive through the lights at both locations - free admission, donations accepted. Both drivethrough events are open nightly from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve, 6:00pm to 10:00pm. THE CASTLE OF MUSKOGEE 3400 W Fern Mountain Rd | Muskogee, OK (918) 687-3625 WWW.OKCASTLE.COM

Hello 2017

SAY

TO

By Kristi Roe-Owen

Though Christmas is over, there is still more celebrating to be done. Love it or leave it, there is no denying that 2016 was one heckuva year and deserves to go out with a big, festive bang. Before laying out those bowties and dazzling little black dresses, we’ve put together a list of some of the area’s coolest options for ringing in 2017 with friends and family. If you count yourself among those blessed folk who love nothing more than a good run, RACE INTO THE NEW YEAR 5K sponsored by Runner’s World at River West Festival Park gives you a chance to start the year off celebrating good health. The walking/running event is a onemile fun run beginning at 11 p.m. This family-friendly event promises music, champagne and beer, black-eyed peas with cornbread, and midnight fireworks. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.com and range from $10 to $30, with proceeds

benefiting River Parks. In Tulsa, locals can check out the WINE LOFT BAR’S OLD HOLLYWOOD GLAM PROHIBITION STYLE celebration. $45 for a single ticket

or $80 per couple gets a signature cocktail we can almost guarantee won’t be bathtub gin, a glass of bubbly for the midnight toast, all night buffet, photo booth, party favors, midnight ball drop with sponsors, and cigars on the patio. Also available are VIP tickets including exclusive loft seating, a private wine and liquor tasting and swag bags. While no dress code is needed to enter these joints, period attire is encouraged-think cloche hats, feather boas, mary janes, and drop waist hems of flapper chic, and Gatsby-era gangster suits or tweed derbies

Wherever you decide to celebrate with that midnight kiss, plan ahead to take care of yourself and loved ones by making sure everyone has a safe way to get home. AAA offers a TIPSY TOW SAFE RIDE program for members and non-members. Plan ahead by programming 1-800-AAA-HELP into your phone. Happy New Year!

LOCAL EATS PEPPERMINT HOT CHOCOLATE RECIPE INGREDIENTS • 1 cup chilled heavy whipping cream, divided • 1 teaspoon plus 2 tablespoons sugar • 2 cups whole milk • 4 ounces bittersweet (preferably 60% cocoa) chocolate, coarsely chopped • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract • 4 small candy canes (for garnish)

INSTRUCTIONS By Kristi Roe-Owen Ah, parent life. It’s Friday night again and the kids are hungry, which you know with absolute certainty by the way they are bouncing up and down like spastic popcorn begging for pizza for the third time this week. The mere thought of kicking off those power flats (or power loafers, fellas) only to take up residence in the kitchen laboring over a meal is cringeworthy. If only there were a place where an easy meal for the family and a lovely glass of merlot won’t require a second mortgage. Fret not, friends. Tulsa abounds with free and affordable meal options for dinner out with the offspring. This handy guide should help you achieve parental winning without breaking the bank. For more information about these offers, check your local restaurants.

ASK MELLA AT MY CHOICE REAL TIPS FOR SENIORS LIVING INDEPENDENTLY

Baby It’s Cold Outside! We are getting colder weather and of course ice or snow could be on the way. Here is some helpful advice for preventing common winter dangers that seniors face. Dress for warmth-- Cold temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia. The CDC reports that over half of the hypothermia (body temperature dipping too low) related deaths are in people of over the age of 65. Dress in layers; wear warm socks, a warm hat, gloves, a scarf and a heavy coat. If the air is very cold cover your face with a scarf to protect your mouth and lungs. Avoid slipping on ice-Spots of ice on sidewalks

and stairs can cause anyone to slip and fall. Unfortunately older adults can face complications such as wrist and hip fractures, head trauma and major lacerations. Wear shoes with good traction and non skid soles. If you do go outside remove your shoes as soon as you return indoors since moisture can stick to the soles of your shoes and cause you to slip and fall inside. Prepare for power outages-- Here is a simple starter list of what to have on hand: flashlight with new batteries, 12 bottles of water, 6 candles, matches, non-perishable food items that can be eaten cold, and your medications.

Winter depression—Reach out and stay in touch with people you know are housebound when bad weather comes. Isolation and loneliness can happen when bad weather keeps you indoors. Make a list of your close neighbors phone numbers and call to say hello. For more information contact:

Dr. Berg. “We’re going to find the best way to return you to normal functioning as quickly as possible.” Dr. Berg specializes in the repair and reconstruction of skin, bone/joints, nerve, muscles/tendons and blood vessels. She treats many patients with Workers’ Comp Insurance. Not every visit to the hand specialist is going to result in surgery. Uber Healthcare frequently recommends a nonsurgical treatment option as the best solution. “It’s very important if you sustain a serious hand injury,” says Dr. Berg, “that you do not put off seeing a specialist. The longer you wait, the more rapidly your treatment options decrease.” If you experience pain in your fingers, hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, or have other extremity-related concerns, you would be well advised to consult a hand specialist. Dr. Berg received additional training in her field from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX,

to become a member of the American Society of Surgery of the Hand, she completed a Hand fellowship and has a certificate of added qualifications in hand surgery. “Outdoor Creations really helped us out in our time of need after we received storm damage to our roof, window, and interior of our house. It was great dealing with one contractor that could do all of the work. They went over and above making sure we were happy along each step of the process. I was a little hesitant to hire a company not located in my city, but Jake and his crew were always here when they said they would be. - S. Sprague
