I want us to be a roofing and construction company that gives everyone a good name. That, and I just wanted to get into it – I just wanted to do it. I own several other businesses, so if this (construction) weren’t something I cared about, I wouldn’t be doing it.” Willis said the work done is all through in-house employees, although subs (subcontractors) may sometimes be called upon for specialty work, and all have passed

background checks and drug tests. As the name implies, Willis said he works on roofs, reroofing work, decks, fences and fence repair, siding and more. As to his area of coverage, Willis said his range is “basically from I-35 east,” with his customers ranging from residential to businesses to recognizable businesses. “We’re in 15 Lowe’s stores all over the state,” he said. “We do their fencing, siding, roofing, decks – we probably do 20-30 projects a week for Lowe’s. We cover Lowe’s in Claremore, Tulsa, Bixby, Ponca City, Stillwater, Tahlequah, Muskogee, Bartlesville and more.” Regarding what distinguishes

him from his competitors, Willis reemphasized his focus on integrity. “By far, our desire to always work with integrity, to follow through on everything, to make our customers as satisfied as possible – obviously, there are people who are harder to satisfy than others, but customer satisfaction is extremely important to us,” he said. “Over the years, I’ve seen materials, and the quality of materials change, improve, but something that never changes or goes out of style is the need for people to know that they can trust you – and having integrity in what you do accomplishes that. SMALL BUSINESS SUMMIT HONORS LOCAL BUSINESSES BY TAYLOR COSTLEY

he Tulsa Regional Chamber honored local individuals and organizations at its sixth annual Tulsa Small Business Summit on Oct. 24. Nearly 550 area professionals attended this year’s summit, making it northeast Oklahoma’s premier small business event. The Tulsa Small Business Connection, a Tulsa Regional Chamber program that educates and empowers businesses with 50 employees or fewer, produces the half-day summit. This year’s summit featured keynote speakers Shelley Brander, founder and CEO of Loops Productions, and Stacy Brown, founder of the fast-casual restaurant chain Chicken Salad Chick. Local small business experts led breakout sessions on topics such as branding, hiring practices, and diversity and inclusion. “The summit is the only event of its kind in our region,” said Angela Byers, CEO and founder of Byers Creative and chair of the Tulsa Small Business Connection.

“Northeast Oklahoma is home to so many outstanding small businesses, and this event provides the opportunity to learn and grow from people who have overcome the same challenges your business may be facing.” The event culminated with the annual Small Business Awards presentation. Nominees went through an extensive application process judged by local small business resource partners. This year, seven individuals or organizations were recognized for the impact they make in their industries and communities. How about a night full of Christmas lights— some 2 million lights worth—and season-themed activities? Some area organizations spend half a year preparing for the arrival of holiday spectators. Rhema Lights Extravaganza can be seen at the Rhema Bible Church campus located at 1025 West Kenosha Street in Broken Arrow. This outing can be a drive-thru, walk-through or carriage-ride tour. Set yourself up for success by avoiding these four mistakes:

1. Procrastinating. The key to a happy, restful retirement is to save as much as possible for as long as possible. Your company’s 401(k) makes it easy, because the money comes out of your paycheck before you even miss it. If you haven’t joined your plan or started saving, do it now. Your company doesn’t have a 401(k)? There are other retirement options like ROTH and traditional IRA accounts. Ask a professional wealth advisor which option may be best for you.

2. Stealing from your future self. That’s what you do when you take a 401(k) loan or early withdrawal from your retirement account. Sometimes things get tough financially, but withdrawing retirement funds early should be your very last option.

3. Cashing out. When you change jobs, you might be tempted to cash out and withdraw all your savings from your 401(k) plan. Don’t do it! Here’s why: You’ll have to pay taxes on the money and a 10% penalty, too. You’ll be left with about half in cash now - and back to zero for retirement. Instead, roll over the money into a 401(k) at your new job, leave it in the old plan, or roll it to an IRA to stay on track to retire when you want.

4. Relying on guesswork. 1 + 1 = 2. Knowing how much money you need in retirement can be just as easy. Chances are it’s a pretty big number. But knowing is better than guessing. ith the holiday season upon us and the sun setting over green country earlier, there is nothing more enjoyable than piling the family into the car and driving through neighborhoods to take in stunning Christmas lights. Tulsa is a festive city and a mecca for Christmas lights from

So how can a family seeking an evening of entertainment find the best trek? Start with a drive through south Tulsa subdivision Preston Woods , located at 111th

between Sheridan and Yale. The Perkins home, located on the corner at 5705 East 110th Street, is a showstopper with 30,000 lights. They change their music every year with songs to please every audience member from traditional Christmas music to children’s tunes to the latest rock hit. It’s the Perkins’ teenage daughter that is credited for the rock selection. Trees, rooflines and poles blink in sync with each note. Their radio signal is posted on a sign out front, 98.3 FM. On a busy night, the traffic piles up as limos pull in and out. Wife Laura Perkins just smirks and shakes her head at her husband’s efforts as it seems the brains behind the equipment and systems is electrical engineer Jay Perkins. “[The display] enables families to create memories as a family unit,” Jay Perkins said. “They

would be able to remember the nights sitting out in front of the ‘crazy guy’s’ Christmas lights.” For 14 years now, showtime starts on Thanksgiving evening and runs through New Year’s Eve from 6 to 11 p.m. nightly. Be prepared to wait in turn for the prime spot at the corner in front of the house; parking turns over about every 25 minutes, the length of the show. Remember to turn off the headlights. Just a few blocks away in Forest Park South subdivision at 104th and Sheridan, the houses are breathtaking, trimmed out and ready for passersby. One particular home, 6125 E 106th Street, belonging to Doug and Suzanne Wright, is a show to be seen. It too boasts of 30,000 lights timed to music, a 25-minute spectacular show, and broadcasting their own radio frequency, 105.7 FM.

They have traditional Christmas music, but keep the seat belt on as one tune boasts screaming guitars that wail out a tune while the lights flicker wildly. “We love driving around during the holiday season and looking at Christmas lights,” Bixby mother of three Bethany Pepin said. “The girls get snuggled up in their pajamas. We have our favorite spots we check out every year but always seem to happen upon new ones to add to our list. It’s one of

Peoria Avenue borders the neighborhood on the east, the Inner Dispersal Loop on the north, Hazel Boulevard to the south, and on the west is the Midland Valley Railroad right of way. Now, the families who live in this neighborhood are lighting enthusiasts and host a promising show. A thermos of hot coffee, a hipflask of cocoa for the kids, and a handful of snacks would top off the drive-thru adventure nicely.

WHAT IS A “GIVE BACK” BURGER?

estled behind the Vineyard Shopping Center at 108th and Memorial, sits one of Tulsa’s hidden gems. Treys Bar and Grill takes a different slant on what most consider bar and grill cuisine. Touted as a familyfriendly bar and grill, Treys takes the utmost pride in providing quality food with a fun atmosphere all can enjoy. Upon entering the restaurant, it’s evident owners Travis Davidson and Matt Lopez have a soft spot for Tulsa. Adorning the walls are a twelve-foot square Tulsa mural, an 11-foot television screen replicating the Admiral Twin and a make-shift stage that pays homage to Cain’s Ballroom, complete with the latest concert posters. You can’t help but feel nostalgic. Treys fills a lot of voids for many people. “We have a lot of regulars, families and even bridge groups,” says Travis. For those wanting to watch sports, there is a 40-seat circular bar with 11 televisions sitting side by side. “We have loads of sports fans who come in to watch the games,” explains Travis, adding that one of the biggest groups he hosts are the Tulsa Steeler Fanatics. Kids aren’t left out either. With a kid’s menu that ranges from corn dog bites to mini burgers. The little ones also enjoy playing shuffleboard. While the atmosphere seems enough to make the bar and grill a unique fixture on the burger scene, it wasn’t enough for Treys owners. “Serving quality food is something we take very seriously,” explains Travis. And, there are many awards to prove it. Among them are Best Burger and Best Happy Hour from Oklahoma Magazine and Best Family

Restaurant finalist from the Tulsa World. It’s easy to understand why Treys is a consistent winner …. Treys only uses the freshest of foods. Burgers are made from 100% double ground brisket that is delivered fresh each day along with the locally baked hamburger buns. Each burger is grilled to bring out the flavors in the meat. “It makes a huge difference in taste,” explains Travis. He also states that none of the food they serve is precooked or frozen. “Our famous sweet potato fries are hand-cut every day. We don’t even buy our sauces, they are all made from scratch,” adds Travis. A new addition to the restaurant is the covered patio. It sports two 70inch screens and is heated so it can be enjoyed year-round. One of the newest menu items is the Give Back Burger. Each month a

different charity is chosen, and a burger created to highlight it. Two dollars from each burger sold goes to the charity. “I think we have a real responsibility to better the community,” says Travis.

“Serving quality food is something we take very seriously.” “Besides giving customers a new burger to choose from each month, customers learn about different local charities. It makes the donation very meaningful to keep it local.” The idea has become so popular customers often just donate to the cause without getting the burger.

Custom catering is another source of business for the south Tulsa restaurant. There are no set menus, and items have ranged from a caramel apple nacho bar to wraps and a macaroni and cheese bar. Treys is open seven days a week. Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Their menu features their famous burgers and chili, but also serves salads and savory appetizers you won’t find anywhere else, with nothing costing more than $13. PERSONALIZE YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE BY JOSH MORIN

ne of the most common questions people ask me is, “What is the best way to train?” The problem with that question is that everyone’s body, nutrition and lifestyle is different, so there is no one-sizefits-all miracle workout or training program. The real answer is the way that best suits your specific goals and body type. For one person, the solution may be CrossFit, for another, it’s heavyweights and for someone else, it’s yoga and running. Just because it works for them does not necessarily mean that it will work for you. So how do you figure that out? STEP 1: SET GOALS What are you specifically seeking to accomplish through your exercise regiment? Gain muscle? Build strength? Develop endurance? Burn

fat? Improve flexibility? Train for a sport or competition? All of these goals are achieved through different types of training. Deciding on clear intentions helps you to focus specifically on getting the results you are after. There are many approaches to exercise, and not just any single one is the “best.” STEP 2: MAP OUT A PLAN If you are just starting out or have limited experience, finding a fitness mentor to answer your questions and assist you in your programming is a great way to start out. Just like with diet opinions, always consider the source of information and do your own research and fact-checking if you decide to build your own plan. Hiring a personal trainer who has in-depth professional experience in the type of program you decide on will be the most beneficial in the long run. If you find yourself in a place where been training for years but seem to stagnate in your progress, find a more experienced mentor who can offer insight and suggestions to assist you in adjusting your training methods. The most dangerous approach is to dive head-first into a program, class or

activity that you’ve never tried. Going hard at a new sport or program without taking the time to ease into it and test how your body responds is the fastest way to find yourself injured, in pain, and eventually losing motivation and giving up. Most gyms offer a free day pass, so check out your options and make sure they provide the amenities you want at a price that fits your budget. Sports and training classes typically offer tryouts and free trials as well, so take advantage of those opportunities before spending money and committing. Once you’ve done your research and learned how to take into account your body type and how you recover doing specific workouts, map out a scheduled plan that you can commit to following weekly. Schedule around various muscle groups, rest and intensity levels. Training all-out every single day is not the most beneficial approach. Your body isn’t built to handle that kind of abuse. Rest and recovery are just as important when it comes to your progress, so giving your body time to heal and build makes a significant difference in your results and will optimize your strength and energy for higher output on training days. Physical activity, nutrition and supplementation each play a role in the fitness process. If you’re eating too much, not enough, or even the wrong kinds of foods that will sabotage your training efforts. Different types of supplements work together with your

training and nutrition to help prepare your body for a workout, get faster or better results and aid in recovery. STEP 3: TRIAL AND ERROR Now that you’ve set your goals, committed to a program, mapped out a routine and have been working out for a few months, it’s time to assess your results. How are you recovering after each workout? Do you feel tired? Fatigued? Lethargic? Unable to recover before your next class or workout? Or do you feel energized? Full of vitality? Strength improving? Is your body’s appearance reflecting your efforts? How do you ultimately feel? Over the past 15 years, I have tried every type of training that I’ve come across, including CrossFit, low volume heavy lifting, high volume training, functional strength, yoga, pilates and many more, and have discovered that what works best for me is not what works best for my friends and colleagues. I understand my body, how I recover, and what is required through my workouts in order to achieve the results I am seeking in correlation to my specific goals. It will take time and consistency while exposing yourself to different types of training in order to figure out what one works best for you, and if you realize the one you’re doing isn’t working for you, explore your options until you find something that does what you want and fine-tune your nutrition and supplement intake accordingly. Remember, the best kind of training is simply the one you commit to.

For only $35 a ticket, each person will receive a passport listing the restaurants and shops participating in the event. Each location will have the choice of a red or white wine to sample. y mother was the queen of Christmas. For most of my life, Mom had nine Christmas trees in our house. Nearly every room had a tree, and each tree had its own theme. The tree in my room was pink and covered with little doll ornaments. The kitchen tree had bright red balls and miniature cooking tools. The day after Thanksgiving, Dad would go up in the attic to start the removal of dozens of huge boxes filled with treasures my mom had collected through the years. Every decoration went up somewhere in our house, whether it was the construction paper reindeer my sisters and I made in pre-school or the porcelain angel she bought the year before at the “after Christmas sale.” Early each December, my sisters and I would help Mom make cookies and other sweets to take to the widows from our church. We spent an entire day driving to each lady’s house with our plates of homemade treats, and sit in the living room of each home listening to Mom chat away about what each of us girls were doing in school, and how cold it was outside. She would look at us with disappointment because we weren’t contributing to the conversation, but how could we when she was doing all the talking? I remember every one of those ladies we used to visit, and it makes me so proud of my mother for teaching us this act of kindness. Mom threw a Christmas party every year for all the women at church. We would have as many as 75 people in our house, each bringing a different dish of food and a small gift to exchange. They played the “Dirty Santa Game” where gifts were unwrapped one by one, and could be taken away, even by the best of friends. Those parties

lasted for hours, and many of those women said it was their favorite day of the year. On Christmas morning, Mom made the grandkids instant oatmeal with extra cinnamon, and they thought it was the best breakfast in the world. If they were lucky, she would pop frozen waffles in the toaster and slather them with margarine and syrup. My mom passed away five years ago after battling cancer. The first Christmas after her death, Dad brought down the Christmas boxes and trees from the attic for the last time. My sisters and I sorted through it all. We kept some, but packed most of it back into boxes that I took to Tulsa in a U-Haul trailer. Dad said he didn’t want any of it because it was just too painful to look at. I drove to five different nursing homes and asked if they wanted Mom’s Christmas decorations, and they all were thrilled to get them. I even got a thank you note from one telling me how much they enjoyed their new Christmas tree. I love Christmas, but nowhere close to how much my mother loved

it. Her legacy still lives on in the lives of many people, including the women at her church. They still have their annual party in the home of my mother’s best friend. I moan at the thought of putting up Christmas decorations, but my children insist I make our house look as festive as I can because that’s what Grandma would have done. For years, I served my kids “Grandma’s oatmeal,” but I prefer to make mine the night

before Christmas in the form of muesli. I think my mom would approve. I wish everyone a very merry Christmas filled with pleasant memories and new traditions. Try my muesli recipe on Christmas morning and add a little extra cinnamon for my mom.

2 cups oats 1/3 cup wheat germ 1/3 cup ground flaxseed 1/4 cup maple syrup 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 3 cups low-fat milk 3 tbsp. sliced almonds, toasted 3 tbsp. chopped pecans, toasted

Combine oats, wheat germ, flaxseed, maple syrup, cinnamon, vanilla, and milk in a large bowl, stirring to combine. Cover and chill 3 hours or overnight. Spoon mixture into 6 bowls and top with nuts. Drizzle with maple syrup, if desired. Note: I like to add fruit, such as bananas, strawberries or blueberries.
