Valentine’s Day should be a burst of cheer amid some of the recent craziness in the markets. The National Retail Federation’s spending survey found that Americans spent $17 billion on Valentine’s Day in 2014. That’s a lot of money, folks! It is estimated that consumers spent approximately $133.91 on average on their chosen Valentine. Men reported spending twice as much as women. As the old saying goes…Roses are red, violets are blue…There were an estimated 257 million roses produced last year on this special day, and Valentine’s Day is reported to be the number one holiday for florists. In keeping with the idea that diamonds are, indeed, a girl’s best friend…There are over 27,484 jewelry stores in the United States, so there is plenty of bling to go around for you guys looking to spend the big bucks. According to Neilsen, Americans purchased over 58 million pounds of chocolate during the days leading up to February 14th in 2014. That’s approximately $345 million worth of chocolaty goodness.

How’s that for a sweet tooth? And lastly, as reported by the Huffington Post, 13 million couples become engaged each year, and approximately 6 million of those are proposed or asked on Valentine’s Day. What a romantic day it is! But that’s not all. According to condom maker Durex, condom sales are about 25% higher around Valentine’s Day. Hmmmm… And statisticbrain.com reports that more at-home pregnancy tests are sold in March than in any other month. Kind of makes you wonder if more condoms should have been purchased, doesn’t it? It is estimated that approximately 11,000 children

First comes love, then comes marriage and then comes combining checking accounts (for some). What to do with your checking and savings accounts may not be the first thing you think about when you decide to get married, but it is an important decision that has to be made. Do you combine your checking accounts into one or do you keep them separate? We asked RCB Bank employees to share their experiences. Personally, my wife and I combined our checking and savings accounts but left her account open with a set dollar amount in it. We use her account for our vacation fund so we can keep track of what we spend and how much money we need for our vacations. For Kevi Zufall, loan officer, and her husband, Tim, they decided to combine their accounts. “It was simply the fact that we were married and saw ourselves as one person rather than two separate people,” Zufall said. Francy Palmer, retail coordinator, and her husband have separate checking accounts. “We do that not because we are trying to

hide anything from each other, but it makes it easier to buy each other a gift or surprise without the other person accidentally finding out,” Palmer said. “As a precaution for the unexpected, he is the POD beneficiary on my account and I am on his account, so if something happens to either one of us the balances of our individual accounts would automatically belong to the surviving spouse.” Derek Robinson, mortgage officer, and his wife have separate accounts but also have a joint account that serves as their savings account. “We like having separate accounts,” he said. “We don’t keep much in our separate accounts but it’s nice to have our own spending money.” There isn’t a right or wrong answer to combining accounts or keeping them separate. It’s a personal preference of what fits your lifestyles best. If you don’t like what you choose now, six months or a year down the road you can always make changes. Combining accounts is simple, just stop in and see your local banker and let them know you would like to join your account(s)

with your spouse or significant other. “The process takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on the services the new account owner requests,” says Brenda Romesburg, CSR. “If the last name is being changed, we need proof of the new name such as a marriage license or photo ID.” Your local bank is here to help and can answer any questions or concerns you may have about joint accounts. The Green Country Watercolor Society will have a special exhibit, Art in the Rose District, at the Broken Arrow Historical Museum February 4 through March 26, 2015. “Green Country Watercolor Society is excited about the upcoming show at the Broken Arrow History Museum. This is a beautiful space for showing our members’ work and for

our show reception, and we are looking forward to an exciting evening and show. I will be showing ‘Pretty Boy’ as one of my entries. It is a reminder of the fun my family has had at Rooster Days celebrations,” stated Joann Burkeen. “Excitement fills us as we look forward to our upcoming watercolor exhibit. The ability to showcase these local artists and their beautiful work to our community is part of our

mission here at the museum,” stated Lori Lewis, executive director of the Broken Arrow Historical Society Museum. Green Country Watercolor Society was founded in 2004 for the purpose of promoting awareness of and interest in watercolor painting, and for encouraging and assisting watercolor painters. Green Country Watercolor Society furthers the interest of painters in watermedia on paper by sponsoring programs and competitive exhibits. They sponsor major workshops that are led by painters who are rec-

ognized nationwide as experts in watermedia painting. They also sponsor two- and threeday workshops by local artists. These workshops are open to all who are interested in developing their watermedia painting skills. Programs are also presented at each of the regular monthly meetings, and are either demonstrations by local artist or presentations of art-related topics. GCWS members are from many walks of life. Some are practicing artists, some are practicing instructors, and some are beginning watercolor

painters. Others have painted in watercolor for many years, just for the enjoyment of the process of creating art in watercolor. All have a love of the art of watermedia painting. GCWS meets the second Thursday of the month, January through November, at the First Presbyterian Church, 121 W. College St., in Broken Arrow. Membership is open to those who are interested in watermedia painting. Annual dues for each calendar year are $35. GCWS welcomes painters of all skills levels. The group’s exhibit, Art in the Rose District, will be on display at the Broken Arrow Historical Museum located at 400 S. Main St. in Broken Arrow February 4 through March 26, 2015.
