WHERE THE

GRASS IS

GREENER By Erica Ludwig

In the season of holidays and starting fresh, Grassroots Healthcare in Tulsa is thankful for just that: another year of doing what they love in the community they adore. “I love what I do,” said Founder, Dr. Melita Tate. “We’re helping people while still being able to provide for ourselves. I love working in this clinic, and being a part of the community.” Grassroots Healthcare opened in May of 2011 near the corner of 91st and Sheridan. It didn’t take long for word to travel quickly about the affordable and friendly clinic. After a time of transition, the healthcare team is back and better than ever. Melita Tate, M.D., is proud to lead the small team dedicated to providing quality, affordable healthcare. Dr. Tate attributes the clinic’s success to the love and loyalty of her patients and the community. To her, gratitude doesn’t even begin to cover the spectrum of what she feels in response to customers’ constant love. “Thanks to the support of the community, we’re able to care for people like we did before,” she said. “We were going through transition for a bit, but now we’re back and better than ever. It’s all because of the wonderful people around us, our neighbors and people at other businesses who have referred patients to us. We are so thankful.” Everything about 10 | Values January 2017

Grassroots is in-house. The team includes a nurse practitioner, which allows for membership –based appointments and visit-based appointments. Dr. Tate prides herself on the clinic’s no insurance policy, the key factor in their low costs. Because Grassroots doesn’t accept Medicare or any insurance, labs are as low as $20 with simple office visits starting at $59. “We do not deal with insurance, nor do we take Medicare,” says Dr. Tate . “Our goal is for people to be healthy. We like to spend as much time with patients as we can so that we can help them in the best possible way.” Grassroots aims to be a naturally minded clinic. This straightforward approach, reminiscent of small-town practices, is advantageous for several types of patients. Many of Dr. Tate’s patients are regulars because they trust her knowledge and appreciate the attention she dedicates to their health. “We try our best to support the system so you don’t have to stay on medication,” said Dr. Tate. “We always look at the natural remedies first.” Come say hello to the friendly staff of Grassroots Healthcare and start your new year the right way.

BEAUTY TREATMENTS TO FIGHT WINTER DRYNESS By Erica Ludwig The bells have rung and the new year has come. Winter has made its welcome as temperatures continue to drop, drying out everything in its path from the grass in the yard to our skin and hair.

The team at Reveal Salon & Aesthetics has one resolution in mind for this year: for their clients to take care of the skin they’re in. Say hello to hydration this winter with treatments for your hair, nails and skin.

HAIR When it comes to hair, Salon Owner and Aesthetician Nicole McGinnis turns to the expertise of two of her experienced stylists, Jill Curbello and Troy Edmonds. Their number one treatment for winter hydration is the Brazilian Blowout. A liquid keratin treatment,

the Brazilian blowout provides a protective layer on the hair, reducing frizz and preserving moisture. “I have clients who come to me for a blowout and get their hair cut elsewhere,” said Jill. “The blowout is great because it works on any hair type and

texture. It also improves shine and moisture levels.” The blowout is a deep conditioning treatment. It makes the cuticle smooth, sealing in moisture. One of the main things the blowout is known for is making the hair smooth and silky, lasting up to 12 weeks.

“Brazilian blowout is different because there’s no downtime to it, “ said Troy. “ With other keratin treatments you have to wait 2-3 days before shampooing, getting your hair wet or putting it in a ponytail. With the Brazilian Blowout, you’re done when you leave the salon.”

master barber. The entire staff offers consultations in all services for those who aren’t quite decided about a new look. The salon has been voted Best in the World by Tulsa World Weekend readers in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Call Reveal Salon for a

consultation to keep your skin and hair glowing this winter.

NAILS Just because our feet are not as exposed this time of year, that doesn’t mean we can neglect them. Getting regular manicures and pedicures can help fight the effect the colder temperatures have on our hands and feet.

Debbie Edmonds of Reveal provides women and men of all ages services including manicures, pedicures, acrylic nails and Shellac. She also uses solar oil for dry nails to get them back in good shape.

SKIN Take care of your skin this winter. Reveal Salon offers chemical peels and a variety of treatments for the extra hydration our skin needs during the cold months. “Winter is a great time to come in for a chemical peel 12 | Values January 2017

because our skin isn’t as exposed to the sun as it is during the summer,” says Nicole. “Almost anyone can benefit from peels and hydration treatments this time of year.” The Reveal team also includes six other stylists and a

By Deanna Rebro A thick, lush, head-turning landscape in the summer starts in winter. So much of caring for a lawn comes down to knowing what needs to be done and when to do it. The first step to a great yard is knowing who to call before spring. For the past 11 years, Sooner Lawn has been delivering a six-step lawn care program from early spring through fall that gets rid of weeds and nourishes grass so it will look good year-round. Owner and U.S. Army Captain Michael Bolton says that early spring is the best time to begin preparing your lawn. Sooner Lawn’s sixstep program begins with an application of pre-emergent

herbicide for crabgrass control, continues with additional weed control and fertilizers during spring and summer, and ends with a winterization weed control in the fall. While many homeowners treat their own lawns, the

particular grass at the right times throughout the year for optimum results, applying lime to regulate proper soil ph to allow maximum effectiveness of fertilizers, and monitoring for insects and diseases. One of the hallmarks of

Sooner Lawn professionals take things to the next level. They treat lawns with the right formulations for that

Sooner Lawn is quick results. “We don’t have to tell our customers their lawns are getting better. They can see improvement each time we’re there,” says Michael. One customer, president and landscaping chairman of The Reserve at Battle Creek said, “The Reserve looks better that it has ever looked in the past, thanks to the Sooner crew. They are very professional and take great pride in their work. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a lawn care company.” Michael adds that Sooner Lawn’s prices are below

most, if not all, other local lawn care companies. And their prompt and professional customer service goes above and beyond expectations. “We keep our customers happy by offering great service at a great price with great results. Just give us a chance to prove it,” he says. A five-year customer echoes his comment. “We have found Michael’s work to be very good, as well as his pricing. We would highly recommend his services.” Sooner Lawn serves residential and commercial customers throughout Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Bixby, Jenks, Sand Springs, Owasso and Claremore. Optional services include fertilization of flowerbeds, aeration for more effective watering and nourishment, perimeter control, insect control of fleas, ticks, ants, spiders and chinch bugs, mole control, turf disease control and fescue seeding. They are fully licensed and insured, and all their recommended work is guaranteed. Sooner Lawn is also accredited with the Better Business Bureau. Preparation now will go a long way toward enjoying the healthy green lawn you want this summer. And you don’t have to lift a finger except to call Sooner Lawn. By Erica Ludwig The office of Carletti Family and Cosmetic Dentistry has been in operation in the city of Sapulpa for over 50 years. A native of Oklahoma, the late Dr. John Carletti, D.D.S., made a huge commitment to service when he moved to the city to grow his dental practice. The practice has been at its current address of 635 S. Main St. since the beginning of 1980. Carletti watched his children grow up while his office expanded, but he wanted to make an even bigger commitment to his community through education. Dental Careers of Tulsa was established in 1998, and Dr. Carletti’s legacy continues today through his children: Dr. Andrew Carletti, Karen Summers and Cathy Carletti-DuPriest.

“Dental Careers of Tulsa has optimized quality programs,” said Program Administrator Norma Tyler. “Since 1998, we have been training students to not only be the best at what they do, but also to care for their patients.” This dental assisting course consistently produces quality dental assistants by offering courses in the spring, summer and fall. There are two different class times to choose from with the same amount of hours. Whether someone is taking two classes a week for 14 weeks or just Saturday courses for 10 weeks, the commitment is the same. A maximum of eight students per class is accepted, and all class times allow students to train for their exciting

new careers while continuing to work at their current jobs. Training session topics include a general introduction to dentistry, X-ray training, infection control, anatomy, instruments and equipment of dentistry, oral surgery, and office management. “Our students complete a 40-hour internship, allowing them to have hands-on training in the field of general dentistry,” said Norma. Names of dentists who indicate that they are seeking qualified dental assistants are given to those enrolled in the program. Some are offered jobs pending graduation. “Dental assistant training is so much more than setting up a tray,” Norma said. “Students are typically ready to work immediately upon finishing the program.” Students interact with doctors and dental staff during the course, allowing for connections to be made as well as to gain an

understanding of what will be expected in the field. The program is very streamlined with an emphasis on in-class hands-on experience to compliment book work. Rather than reading about a process or procedure, students within the program immediately experience it themselves. The school is currently awarding one $1,000 scholarship per class to the student who qualifies through the school’s selection process. “Our graduates have been successful in their fields upon completing training,” said Norma. “Several have continued their education and become dental hygienists and a few have even become dentists.” Become a part of the family at Dental Careers of Tulsa. Give them a call for scholarship forms and course information. DENTAL CAREERS OF TULSA 635 S. Main St. | Sapulpa, OK (918) 224-0680 WWW.DENTALCAREERSOFTULSA.COM

20 | Values January 2017

A DATE WITH

Oklahoma Music Royalty By Carol Matza Have you ever wondered what it would be like to rub shoulders with some of the most notable names in music? Well, grab your valentine and put on your best suit for this date night to remember. On February 10, 2017 five nationally renowned fiddlers will be inducted into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame at the Mabee Center in Tulsa. The night will be a red carpet affair with Grammy-nominated band, The Time Jumpers (TTJ) headlining with a full concert. Three fiddle players from The Time Jumpers, Kenny Sears, Larry Franklin and Joe Spivey; will be inducted into the NFHOF. Also being inducted are posthumous inductees, blues-jazz violinist Papa John Creach and beloved composer and bluegrass fiddler Randy Howard. “There is nothing better than the sound of twin fiddles, except triple fiddles,” said Bob Fjeldsted, President of the National Fiddler Hall of Fame. “The 2017 National Fiddler Hall of Fame Induction Class will be led by three of the foremost fiddlers of our time. They are taking the art of fiddling to the world.” Tap any member of multi Grammy nominated The Time Jumpers on the shoulder and the face that turns to greet you will be that of one who’s made major contributions to the richness and

vigor of country music. “This honor is one I never expected,” said inductee Joe Spivey. “It’s a great deal. It’s made me think a lot about my career and the things I’ve done along the way. It’s inspired me in some ways I never even thought. It’s fantastic.” The current edition of The Time Jumpers includes 10 members, each a master of his instrument. They are Vince Gill (vocals, electric and acoustic guitars), “Ranger Doug” Green (vocals, acoustic rhythm guitar), Paul Franklin (steel guitar), Brad Albin (upright bass), Larry Franklin (vocals, fiddle), Andy Reiss (electric guitar), Kenny Sears (vocals, fiddle), Joe Spivey (vocals, fiddle) Jeff Taylor (accordion, piano) and Billy Thomas (vocals, drums). On September 9, the band released their radiant third album, Kid Sister, on Rounder Records. This treasury of 14 tunes—new and classic—is both a sweet tribute to the band’s late “girl singer,” Dawn Sears (the “Kid Sister” of the title), and a sparkling celebration of western swing and traditional country music. The group has just been nominated for 2 Grammy awards – Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Song for the title track, “Kid Sister,” written by Vince Gill. These nominations January 2017

are the fifth and sixth for this 10-piece group of stellar musicians. “This will be a fabulous show and will recognize five stellar fiddlers as inductees into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame,” said Jana Jae. “What could be better for your valentine than this concert including dreamy Vince Gill? The Time Jumpers are absolutely the finest in Western Swing, and we are proud to have them with us in Tulsa!” The National Fiddler Hall of Fame in Tulsa, Oklahoma first inducted the late Bob Wills in 2007 and each year has added to its distinguished alumni. Among the list of past inductees are, Roy Acuff, Kenny Baker, Curly Lewis, Johnny Lee Wills, Chubby Wise, Stuff Smith, Jana Jae, Jay Ungar, Byron Berline and Doug Kershaw. TIPS TO HELP YOU START THINKING LIKE A SAVER

GET FINANCIALLY FIT IN 2017 By Jocelyn Wood

This is the year you’re going to take charge of your money. No more rationalizing overspending. No more excuses why you can’t put money into savings. No more regrets. Everyone can save more money. The question you have to ask yourself is what kind of life do you want? Do you want to be debt free? Do you want those new black leather boots? Do you want to retire comfortably? Do you want the newly released smartphone? Do you want to stop living paycheck to paycheck? Do you want your daily large caffé latte from your favorite coffee shop? Saving money is a personal choice only you can make, and the commitment takes effort. It requires discipline and self-control, but the

end result – more money in your savings, a larger down payment on a home or being debt free – is worth your diligence. Here are three practical tips to help you change your attitude about

MATCH YOUR SPENDING

If you struggle with sticking to a budget or tracking your expenses, try this: save an amount equal to whatever you spend on nonessential

indulgences. If you want your morning java, put $4 in a jar. If you plan to eat lunch out, put $8 in jar. You will literally see your spending

REMEMBER YOU WORK HARD

Before you spend your hard-earned money, take the cost of the item you want and divide it by your hourly wage. If you want a $90 pair of boots and you make $10 an hour, are those boots worth the nine

hours of work? Also, pay yourself first. That means put money aside from every paycheck into a savings or retirement account. Saving even $25 a month adds up. Set up

DO NOT BUY ON IMPULSE

Never purchase expensive items on impulse. Think over each purchase for at least 24 hours. During that period, do steps one and two. This will help you consider how necessary the item is that you want to buy. It will also help you have fewer regrets about purchases and more money for savings.

You don’t have to do it alone. Find someone who will help you stay on track of your savings goal. Check out AmericaSaves. org, a site dedicated to helping individuals save money, reduce debt and build wealth. You can take the savings pledge and set up text alerts to receive encouraging

automatic savings through a direct deposit or money transfer. You may surprise yourself how fast your savings grows when you put it on auto-pilot. Ask your bank for more information.

ASK MELLA AT MY CHOICE REAL TIPS FOR SENIORS LIVING INDEPENDENTLY

How to Afford Care for Seniors Living at Home As more people age, over 10K people a day are turning 65, the question of how to pay for needed care is being asked much more often. Financial planning may not be in place. There are assets-- a home and car, and a small Social Security check, and some savings. How do you know how much you can spend on care? First, you must understand your set monthly income. This includes all set payments from Social Security, pensions and any other set payment you receive. Do not include random income from occasionally working or receiving gifts. Second, make a list of all set payments you must make each month. Mortgage or rent, utilities, vehicle loans, gasoline for a month, groceries, insurance premiums and credit card payments should all be listed.

Anything you do not have to spend is non-essential. Dining out, vacations, sending money to a grandson in college and new landscaping are all expenses you can change if needed. These expenses can be hard to track and control. Try keeping your receipts for 30 days and reviewing how your money was spent—it will make you more aware of your spending habits. Subtract your set expenses from your set income and you decide how to spend any leftover money. Remember it will be an advantage if you have a little cash put away for emergencies. But what if you are upside down and you still need care? There are places to seek financial assistance in reorganizing your payments or lowering your payments. If you feel you have ‘lower income’ you may

qualify for the Advantage Plan or even a grant that will provide you with a part time caregiver. Reach out to your church or Life Senior Services in Tulsa (918)664-9000 for information or referral to assistance. At My Choice we work within the family budget to build a Care Plan that meets as many needs as possible. We are committed to helping seniors live well at home. For more information contact:

It’s that time again when cupid comes calling – Valentine’s Day. Do you know where you are going to take your special someone? Now you can take them to The Pink House for lunch or dinner. The Pink House will be opening for dinner starting in February 2017 from 5:00 p.m. through 8:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday of each week featuring new items like steak, chicken fried chicken, meatloaf and more hearty fare in larger, dinner-sized portions. So, whether you are celebrating Valentine’s Day with your significant other, or celebrating solidarity with your single friends for Gal-entine’s Day, there’s a place for lovers of all kinds at The Pink House…lovers of tea, lovers of quiches and casseroles, lovers of butterscotch and baked fudge, lovers of all things yummy. Established in 1982, The Pink House has built a faithful following of local foodies who can’t get enough of the made-from-scratch lunches, brunches and delectable desserts. These local favorites are served in a pink Victorian home turned tea house in the downtown historic district of Claremore, Oklahoma, providing the perfect setting for love. “When I bought the Pink House in 2007, my passion was to create a place for friends to connect over great food and a wonderful pot of tea,” said Owner Margo Stewart. “Everything we do from the unique décor to the delicious cuisine, is done for the pleasure of our guests, to give them a place to relax and connect with friends and family.” The locals will tell you that everything on the menu is good at The Pink House, but over-the-top yummy 34 | Values January 2017

GOING PLACES By Erica Ludwig

Silver Arrow Estates in Broken Arrow has resolved to be more than just an Independent Living Community. From activities to amenities, the staff goes above and beyond to provide the finest quality for their residents, The Holiday Touch. “We try to stay up to date around here,” said Sales Leader Beth Ashcraft. “We aim to be above the rest in the Communities in what we offer our residents.” The Holiday Retirement Community prides itself on its Resort-Style living, showing seniors that you can love your life after retirement. “We like to tell our prospective residents that living here is like taking a permanent vacation,” said Beth. Some of the amenities that Silver Arrow offers include Restaurant-Style Dining

with Award Winning Chef, Christopher Payne, who has been with the community for 10 years; Housekeeping services, exercise equipment, pet-friendly apartments and cottages with a variety of floor plans, scheduled local transportation, 24/7 emergency response services, a monthly newsletter, a TV/media and billiards room. Silver Arrow provides residents with flexible rent agreements. Not only do they have a Rent Freeze Program, but also there are No LongTerm Leases or buy-in fees. Residents are also free to live

out their golden years in style with Holiday Retirement’s Travel Program. This program makes current residents automatically eligible to stay at other Holiday locations by reserving a guestroom. There are over 300 communities across the United States. Residents visiting another community will enjoy all the benefits they get at home with scheduled transportation and complimentary meals. “Our seniors will not be in short supply of activities in this community,” said General Manager, Vicki Thielker. “We

even have our own choir, the Silver Tones. They go yearround and have concerts.” Silver Arrow not only keeps their residents active, but protected. The community will be implementing Great Call, a help pendant with built-in GPS, in the near future. This gadget works just about anywhere, even out-of-state, helping erase worries of children and caretakers. Millennium Home Health keeps an office at Silver Arrow to ensure that seniors can age in place, offering a rather a la carte type of assistance for the residents. Though a community of its own, the staff of Silver Arrow make their own efforts to still be a part of the Broken Arrow community. The independent living community sponsors a dance at the Broken Arrow Senior Center each month and always enjoys when visitors come to their events. On January 21, they will be hosting Food for the Soul, a Chef ’s Showcase at 12:30 p.m. The friendly staff of Silver Arrow Estates invite you to stop by and take a tour, today. SILVER ARROW ESTATES

“Outdoor Creations really helped us out in our time of need after we received storm damage to our roof, window, and interior of our house. It was great dealing with one contractor that could do all of the work. They went over and above making sure we were happy along each step of the process. - S. Sprague
