early half of all adults have losing weight on their New Year’s resolution list. But how likely is it you’ll stick to it? Making lifestyle changes isn’t easy, and many New Year’s resolutions don’t last. But, finding a successful method and sticking to it has never been easier. The staff at BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center has weight loss programs to fit an individual’s needs with proven results. The spa, located between 71st and 81st on Elm, uses extensive medical research along with your individual goals to develop a plan suited to help you achieve the results you’ve longed for. Their most successful program is the HCG plan. “Most people are familiar with this plan, but we’ve fine-tuned it so patients will see results that stick,” says Malissa Spacek, managing partner and founder. “The process starts with a complimentary consultation where you discuss goals as well as challenges you’ve had before. “Weight loss is personal,” stresses Malissa, assuring that “We don’t judge. Holidays happen. We really care about our patients and how weight affects their lives, whether that is self-image or more energy needed for an active lifestyle.” The plan starts with the creation of a balanced diet plan tailored to your individual needs.

f you only had two words to describe Kayla Norris’ new venture, it would be “entrepreneurial fairytale.” That’s how Kayla regards her endeavor, Gardenia Mercantile. The business, which makes and sells metal art décor, has only been in existence for four months, but has already made a big impression on Tulsa consumers. While Kayla worked in advertising, one of her clients and now business partner, Brent Nicholson, mentioned to her that his metal shop had taken a hit with the oil/gas bust. The more he described all the machinery in his shop, the more Kayla’s curiosity grew. “He kept talking about a plasma table that was taking up space and at first I wondered what this thing would do,” adds Kayla. After a few more conversations, they decided to partner together to make Kayla’s vision of handcrafted metal pieces for the home a reality. Now Kayla and Brent, along with their metal artisans Robert Brown, Alexis Gammon and Paul LaBoube make pieces that as Kayla puts it are, “inspirational pieces designed with love in mind.” Kayla is passionate about home and her goal is to create items that will make your space cozy and unique

HEALTHCARE

WITHOUT THE HASSLE BY TERESA BOND-MASON

W

ith a new year comes everyone’s most dreaded feat - besides keeping New Year’s resolutions, that is - starting to meet health insurance deductibles. What if you didn’t have to worry about deductibles and still got topnotch medical care at the same time? At Grassroots Healthcare, Dr. Melita Tate and her staff make that happen. The clinic, which opened in 2011, provides affordable healthcare without the hassle of insurance. The premise is simple, Dr. Tate explains, “We have two plans to choose from; Direct Care, which costs a low monthly rate and allows you 24-7 access to the doctor, or Visit Based Care, which is price-based on each individual visit. Regardless of which plan you choose, no insurance or Medicare are needed.” A list of fees for any lab service that may needed is listed on the front wall of the office and online. There are no hidden fees. You get sick, make an appointment, see the doctor and by eliminating third parties, such as insurance, the costs are kept low and the staff has more time to treat the patient as a whole.

“We didn’t start out aiming to treat patients holistically. It’s evolved to that because we have the time to listen to each of the patient’s symptoms and really uncover what is causing his or her ailments. We look at the big picture and rather than just prescribe medications, we look to get patients off the meds and actually change their lifestyles so they no longer need them,” explains Dr. Tate. “It is so rewarding to provide quality, personable healthcare for less money. I feel like that is what being a doctor is all about and with the complexity of insurance and government, we’ve gotten away from that. I worked for a big clinic once I started practicing medicine and realized the reason people went to urgent care and hospitals is because many times they couldn’t get an appointment with their own doctor,” adds Dr. Tate. Grassroots prides itself on its accessibility. “I’ve actually had patients text me pictures of something that needs stitches, and rather than running to the

ER, I just have them meet me at the clinic and I’m able to take care of the problem at a fraction of the cost.” Dr. Tate, a graduate of the University of Oklahoma Medical School, has five children of her own, so she understands the importance of being able to get well quickly. “We keep our schedule open to work in sick patients and because that time is allotted for, no patient is made to feel like they are being rushed.” Board Certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics, Dr. Tate also has several years of urgent care experience. Dr. Tate is assisted by Nurse Practitioner Kyndol Ray and Assistant Aimee Catcher. “Our favorite thing about Grassroots,” Dr. Tate adds, “is that we treat our patients as family.” The clinic, located at 91st and Sheridan, is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed each day from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for lunch. Grassroots Healthcare is a practical option for anyone needing quality healthcare at an affordable price.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Chilling with

the Animals:

Wintertime Fun in Tulsa BY KRISTI ROE-OWEN

R

emember all the fun you had this summer at the Tulsa Zoo cold chilling at the Chimpanzee Connection and soaking up the warm sun with all your little goat friends at the petting zoo? Those were good times, but now that the colder weather is kicking in, the good times don’t have to end. According to zoo horticulturalist Cameron Dunford, this is actually the coolest time to visit the zoo, pun totally intended. “Most of the animals are still on exhibit in the cold,” Dunford said. “The zoo is great when it’s not crowded,” he explained. “Warmer days, above 40 or 45, are the days to go. If you’re looking for thrills and chills, then look no further than the coldest hot spot around!” The Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks is also a great place to commune with nature when the mercury drops. And there’s plenty to keep you busy!

AT THE TULSA ZOO: Befriend a Wild Kitteh. If you can’t get

enough jellybean toes online but you’re ready to up your cat game, consider adopting one of the zoo’s adorable baby snow leopard cubs. It’s a symbolic adoption, so snorgles are pretty much off the table to you crazy cat lovers, but you can gaze all oogly-eyed for hours at those spotty lil furbabies through the safety of a wire panel and make every weekend Caturday.

Chill with Master Shifu. Okay, so you

probably aren’t going to learn any kung fu from this little guy, and his name is actually Bo, but he is a totally stinking adorable red panda. He arrived in town a while back, but it was too hot for this little bamboo-loving friend to hang at the zoo, so he’s been off-site waiting for the temperature to cool down. Red pandas are used to cold weather, so he’s completely down to chill.

Wave to a Warthog. No promises they’ll wave back, but according to Dunford, the warthogs are soon slated to move into the rhino and mixed species yard, and despite what Disney may have led you to believe, it won’t hurt to stand downwind.

Be a Trekker. Put down that bat’leth. We said trekker,

not trekkie. Tulsa Zoo’s amazing WildLIFE Trek buildings are a great way to habitat hop and mingle with dozens of species. While you’re checking off Disney characters, go ahead and find Nemo lurking around the Life in the Water exhibit.

a year old, and for the two loggerhead sea turtles who call it their home, things are going swimmingly with their tropical fish and reef shark friends at Sea Turtle Island.

Celebrate Shark Week Early.

Everybody knows sharks are the true heroes of Sharknado. While the Jenks sharks won’t sign any autographs, you can experience the full glory of hanging with totally rad bull sharks in a tunnel.

You Otter Know. That’s right, otters. The furriest,

cutest little water friends on the planet are just hanging around at the aquarium waiting for you to come say hi. Need we say more?

So what are you waiting for, Dr. Dolittle? Grab your best adventuring hat and head out on your animal expedition while the weather’s still nice and frosty. Before your adventure, be sure to call or check www.tulsazoo.com and www.okaquarium.org for the latest details about all the animals you can see this winter! JANUARY 2018 TULSA

Health & Wellness

The idea of a fountain of youth goes back as far as history records have been kept. It is the talk of myths and legends dating back to at least the days of Alexander the Great. It is no surprise that many people the world over want to stay young and healthy as long as possible while maintaining their youthful energy. The Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon thought he would find this fountain in what is present day Florida, but even he would be shocked by what researchers found in only four known water springs today. Nobel Prize nominee Dr. Garth Nicolson, has been researching the properties of these water sources after hearing many claims these waters held healing benefits when people drank from it. These claims go back centuries, and even wealthy celebrities have been known to visit these unique springs for their special benefits. The question is, could these springs truly be some type of “fountain of youth” or healing water source? This started a journey of discovery unlike anything he could imagine. “What we found was amazing, and we knew this was a life changing discovery,” Nicolson says. What his research uncovered after multiple tests from these sources was shocking. The water samples taken revealed these springs have one specific element to the water not found anywhere else naturally on earth. These waters contain large amounts of hydrogen. According to Nobel Prize winning scientist Albert SzentGyörgyi, hydrogen is considered the most powerful known anti-oxidant on earth. The significance of this discovery revolutionizes everything we know about water and it’s relationship with anti-oxidants. The scientific studies demonstrating the benefits of antioxidants are unprecedented when it comes to the number of benefits. Some of these benefits are the protection of cells in the body from dangerous free radicals that age our cells. These free radicals oxidize our cells internally much the same way metals rust and apples turn brown when exposed to air. These free radicals are found in our environment and the food we eat everyday thus leading to increased aging of the body, with some becoming chronically ill. Drinking hydrogen enriched water, floods the cells of the body with anti-oxidants and protects them from the aging process. These anti-oxidants can also be found in a host of

fruits and vegetables, but water is the most effective delivery system for these anti-oxidants to reach our cells because of the molecular properties of hydrogen in the water. Japanese scientists have also taken note of this discovery, and the people of Japan experience some of the best health and longevity of any country in the world. One company has even pioneered a patented way to have this hydrogen rich anti-oxidant water for home use. The device was also awarded numerous patents world-wide, and has produced such great results it is even used in hospitals across Japan. It is estimated that as many as 20% of households in Japan now also use this exciting technology. Using their innovative process, anyone can now have access to this life changing water and experience the benefits. Many individuals that have struggled for years with the debilitating pain from gout, arthritis, inflammation, diabetes, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, and a host of other issues have reported amazing benefits from drinking this unique water. Some have reported feeling younger and having more energy throughout the day. Others have reported healthier skin and hair after using this special water. After experiencing some of these benefits first hand Brent Nicholson and his wife Rhonda founded a local green country company called IO Pure. They are very passionate about helping others and spreading the word about this unique water “I find a lot of people are worried about what is in their water and whether it is safe to drink or not.” “I also find others are looking for relief from chronic issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, gout, and arthritis,” Brent says. He and his wife Rhonda are also giving away free samples of this exciting antioxidant water. If any of this sounds interesting, looks good, or just feels right, you can call 918-747-9100.

Fraud can happen to anyone. It happened to me and text banking tried to warn me. I was out of town. I noticed two purchase alerts in my messages. My wife and I share an account and she had recently been to a craft fair, so I assumed they were hers. I was in a hurry and did not verify the transactions. My mistake. A couple of hours later, my bank called to inform us these were fraudulent charges on my wife’s card. Luckily, they caught it quickly and canceled her card before other fraud occurred. Fraud departments are great at what they do, but so are fraudsters. It’s ultimately up to me to keep track of what is happening on my account. Text banking allows me to monitor account activity quickly and easily throughout the day from my phone. If I don’t recognize an expense, I can check it out right then. Detecting fraud early can help minimize loss. Many major credit card companies also offer text alerts. Let text banking help you guard your money.

You can use text banking to check account balances, transfer money between accounts and notify you when your balance falls below a specific dollar amount. You can pick and choose which alerts you want to receive. Smartphone and Wi-Fi not required. Learn more ways to protect your money at

A SUPERIOR MAINTENANCE PLAN

GET YOUR GARAGE DOOR IN SHAPE BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE BY DUANE BLANKENSHIP

S

uperior Overhead Door Owner Steve Lewis says, “It’s really unfortunate that most homeowners take their garage doors and openers for granted until something goes wrong.” The company’s sales manager, Harold Blalock adds, “I hear my neighbors’ garage doors making all sorts of screeching and clanking noises and most of the time they probably just need lubricating before something bad goes wrong. Unfortunately, most homeowners never give us a call until it’s too late and something has already failed or broken and is in need of repair.” A garage door and opener work in unison and are much like your vehicle. They need periodic checking, servicing and preventive maintenance. Who would think of driving a vehicle for years without changing the oil, checking brake fluid, replacing radiator coolant, rotating the tires and having other

recommended services provided? But yet, most of us go through eight to twelve cycles (open and close) each day and never think of servicing our garage doors, even when they’re making creaking and groaning noises. Then when something breaks or a door falls off the hinges—always at the most inconvenient time—we realize that we’ve waited too long and it’s going to cost more than it would have if we’d had the foresight to make sure our system was serviced at recommended intervals. Most garage door springs have an average life expectancy of about 10,000 cycles…open and close constituting one cycle. Steve recommends that springs, rollers and hinges be lubricated at six month intervals. It’s something you can do yourself with a quality lubricant developed specifically

for garage doors to improve performance and extend the life on your garage door. The product lubricates and protects, stops rust and corrosion, loosens frozen parts and displaces moisture. Or you can take the worry out of remembering by setting up a Superior Maintenance Plan. “It’s a great way to possibly prevent a costly repair,” said Steve. “We also recommend considering an extended-life spring that extends life from the usual 10,000 cycles to 25,000 cycles,” added Harold. “The price difference is not significant and is well worth it for all the valueadded benefits.” In 2018, they are celebrating 10 years in business. Superior Overhead Door would like to thank all their customers for trusting them with their overhead door needs. Give Superior a call when you’re looking for a trusted, well known and established company that provides quality products and excellent service.

BRING YOUR

GUESTS OUT TO THE

RANCH BY TERESA BOND-MASON

THE OK40 RANCH HOSTS EVENTS OF ALL KINDS

J

ust mere minutes outside Tulsa County in Mounds, Oklahoma, sits an unassuming ranch that upon first look you might just pass by. But, once you arrive at the OK40 Ranch, you may never want to leave. First opened three years ago by owners Debbie Hunter and her husband, Eddie, this country oasis was first meant to be a Bed & Breakfast and wedding venue. Over time, it not only hosts weddings, but as Debbie puts it, “anything you can imagine.” The ranch boasts two Bed and Breakfast cabins, each of which sleep six, an authentic Teepee (which also sleeps six) and the main house, or hacienda, as Debbie calls it. But serving as a B & B is only the beginning to the OK40 Ranch. “We have a spot for bonfires by the cabins, two catch-and-release fishing ponds, a place for archery, trails to hike, a spa, a theater room, and horses to ride on,” says Debbie, who says they will be adding a bunkhouse soon that will sleep up to 28 people. Besides weddings, Debbie has hosted family reunions, proms, girl weekends, church camps, line-dance lessons and as she states, “If you can dream it, I can make it happen.” The

reception hall alone has space for 150 people and that doesn’t count the patios on both sides of the hall, each able to comfortably host 60 to 80 people. Debbie is a jack of all trades and very little intimidates her or her boundless energy. “We’ve had everything from a Twilight-themed wedding to someone requesting if we can host a scrapbook retreat.” A self-described “organized hoarder”, Debbie and her crew have everything you need for any type of event you propose. The location and service sets OK40 Ranch aside from other venues. “I always tell my clients I’ll be as involved as you want me to be,” Debbie points out. A graduate of Oklahoma State University, Debbie majored in architectural interior design. Before opening OK40, she owned and managed her own floral shop. “I knew it was time to slow down, so my husband and I purchased this land and designed it all ourselves. The hacienda, which sleeps up to eight, is the main house and was designed by Debbie herself. The

house, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, is decorated entirely from local estate sales or repurposed materials found around the ranch. Debbie says that when she cleaned up the property, she threw out less than one full dumpster in order to reuse everything she could. Both cabins as well as the reception hall also have been designed with repurposing in mind. The bathrooms have wood and metal found from the old Ranch and everything in between Debbie has found by scouring local sales. The authenticity of the feel is second to none and no detail has gone unnoticed. “We want everyone to leave here with a unique experience,” says Debbie, who vows that her favorite part of wedding planning is “seeing the look on a dad or groom’s face when the bride is revealed. That’s when you know all the sweat and tears have paid off.” One important concept to Debbie was to make sure it was a family-

oriented Ranch, but probably the most impressive aspect of the Ranch is that Debbie has set it up to become a nonprofit therapeutic horseback riding ranch once she and Eddie are gone. Giving back is something she takes to heart. She works with the local schools to help provide for children who may have otherwise gone without. One room was stockpiled with Angel Tree gifts for local kids. “Volunteering is my favorite award,” explaining “awards and

acknowledgement don’t mean anything if you are not willing to share your blessings with others.” Although she states she’d rather be in the background planning your next event, you can’t help but feel her enthusiasm for whatever it’s going to take to make your dreams come true. Rates for the Bed & Breakfast can be found on their web site, and there is also a link to email Debbie about

planning your next event. Whatever your desire, she’s certain to make sure every last element is carried out and you won’t leave without being overjoyed at the unique experience she has planned.

f you are thinking about a career change but are not sure what you’d like to do, Dental Careers of Tulsa is here to help you find your path to success. They have been training dental professionals for nearly two decades and they will help you obtain the skills you need to become a dental assistant. “Dental Careers of Tulsa has optimized quality programs,” said Program Administrator Norma Tyler. With small class sizes (just 8 students at a time) and affordable programs, you’ll be on track to begin a new career in just a few months’ time. “Since 1998, we have been training students to not only be the best at what they do, but also to care for their patients,” she added. “Dental assistant training is so much more than setting up a tray.” Training session topics include a general introduction to dentistry, X-ray training, infection control, anatomy, instruments and equipment of dentistry, oral surgery, and office management. With this dental assisting course, graduates should have both the confidence and skills required to apply for these positions. “Students are typically ready to work immediately upon finishing the program,” said Norma. Dental Assisting is a solid and fulfilling career choice. As a dental assistant, you will learn to help care for patients and educate them about their oral health. The curriculum is experience-based, so you won’t be struggling to learn about procedures solely from a book. You’ll dive right in, observing and able to ask questions as they come up. The hands-on atmosphere gives you an edge when it comes to recalling the material, so you’ll be learning faster and retaining more than you might be while attending programs that are rooted in traditional lectures and textbook study. The program also comes with built-in experience, which is required for most positions and it can be difficult to obtain. “Our students complete a 40-hour internship, allowing them to have hands-on training in their field of interest,” said Norma. They even offer professional guidance, teaching you the ins and outs of applying to positions in this field so you will be set up for success from the start. The unique curriculum at Dental Careers of Tulsa gives
