Military History Trivia Night Challenge! BY MACY GOODNIGHT

O

n any given day at the Broken Arrow Military History Center, during operating hours, there will invariably be one or more veterans hanging out in the lobby, even from WWII, visiting with each other and telling some of the most amazing stories most people have probably ever heard. To share this camaraderie with the community, and also raise funds for the museum and its programs, the Center will host their fourth annual Military History Trivia Night, at Battle Creek Event Center July 19, with food at 5 p.m. and trivia at 6 p.m. This event is not only educational but unbelievably inspiring. Sponsorships for tables are available for $200, and individual tickets are only $25. Guests can purchase tickets in advance at the Military History Center, located at 112 N. Main St. in Broken Arrow. Table sponsorships are invaluable, as noted by the museum’s president of the board, Tom Mancino, BG U.S. Army (RET). “If we get enough people to sponsor tables, then it’s possible we can let some veterans play for free,” said Tom. The event will provide a challenging night of military and history trivia, with food, door prizes and best of all, fellowship. There will be prizes for winners, but Tom says, “It’s not much; winners will

luxury rooms indoors and outdoors Four Seasons Sunrooms and Screen Rooms are professionally installed lifestyle enhancements. BY TOM FINK

T

o enhance the beauty, livability and value of any home, a patio or sunroom is an ideal addition. Sunrooms offer openness and visibility while being more costeffective than traditional additions, with the versatility to suit the homeowner’s preferences. Four Seasons Sunrooms has been satisfying discriminating homeowners across the nation since 1974 by building beautiful sunrooms, solariums, and conservatories. Four Seasons now also offers outdoor shade products, so homeowners can now contact them for all their outdoor patio needs as well. The Tulsa Four Seasons store has been operated by the same local ownership since 1992. “People know us by our sunrooms – our sunrooms are known across the nation for their outstanding quality – and that reputation is built on superior service and superior products,” said Brian K. Jones, president, Four Seasons Sunrooms in Tulsa. “I’ll always go with the top products available, one of which that we utilize is Rainier Shades, which are as attractive as they are practical, saving energy and cooling naturally. They really 8

are a superior product.” Rainier power screens and our louvered patio cover are our newest additions to our outdoor shade lineup. With the touch of a button, the Rainier retractable power screen enhances any home, while providing shade, energy savings and ventilation, making the product a sound investment for any home’s comfort and elegance. “(Rainier) screens come in maybe a dozen different colors – white, tan, black, bronze, offwhite, desert sand, gray, silver and others – all of which are built to order with durable powder coating which creates a beautiful appearance and requiring very little maintenance,” he said. Another superior quality product

utilized in many Four Seasons Sunrooms projects is the Equinox Louvered Roof system, which allows the customer to control the louver angles for full sun, shade or rain protection. The Equinox Louvered Roof system gives homeowners unmatched versatility, convenience and low-maintenance durability. The angle of the louvers can be changed with the touch of a button to create the desired amount of protection or ventilation, and they’re easily integrated into smarthome technology. Regardless of the system chosen, once the materials for a given project arrive, the average time spent on installation is “about a week,” often with Jones’ personal involvement.

Jones, who began in 1979 as an installer for another company, went to work for Four Seasons Sunrooms in 1989, buying the business in 1992, and although he’s the company president, he prides himself in taking a very “hands-on” approach to each project. “I’m not just the owner; I’m the project manager. I personally go out to our project sites, look at the space, and talk with the homeowner, so that I know at the very beginning what would work best for the homeowner,” he said. “There isn’t a project we’ve done since I bought the company that I haven’t had a hand in, and we’ve done projects on homes from $3,000 to $300,000, so we take on a wide range of jobs.” (continued on next page)

(continued from previous page) Windows and doors, patio covers and screen rooms, James Hardie Siding, and more are handled through the company as well, and the patented Conservaglass Select glass used in windows and other projects are also of superior quality. “We (Four Seasons Sunrooms) are the only company that offers Conservaglass Select,” Jones said. “This high-performance glass is made with a 12-layer patented formula, the end result of which is that it helps keep the sunroom from overheating in the summer, while at the same time, keeping the temperature inside warmer in the winter – it keeps you warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, basically.” The process to create Conservaglass Select uses multiple microscopic coatings of exotic metals and compounds to let beneficial natural light into a room, while blocking the sun’s oppressive solar energy, and reducing the damaging effects of UV rays. finish to the glass to make it stay cleaner longer than competitor’s glazing. This exterior finish makes the glass extremely smooth to reduce dust and dirt accumulation, at the same time, harnessing the power of the sun to help loosen dirt so that water can easily rinse it away. Even with all the superior products and services available, Jones said he’s

most impressed with the quality of his staff. “I know it’s probably been said by others, but we really do have the very best people working for us – thorough professionals from start to finish,” he said, “and definitely the nicest people you’ll ever meet.” So, if you’ve ever dreamed of making a space of your very own for a reasonable cost, contact Four Seasons Sunrooms for a free in-home design consultation. The Many Benefits of a Medically Supervised Sugar Detox You may be surprised to learn that sugar is the root of all evil when it comes to your health and wellbeing, especially when being overweight is also a concern. According to medical experts, sugar is at the heart of the American obesity epidemic and is the underlying cause of numerous chronic illnesses, including heart disease, cancer, and even depression. Here at Grassroots Healthcare in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dr. Melita Tate takes a holistic approach to health, wellness, and weight loss. She helps people of all ages learn how to make better nutritional choices that often lead to life-changing health benefits. From an early age, most Americans start eating typical breakfast, lunch, and dinner foods, not even thinking about their sugar content. What’s worse, even when you believe you and your family are eating healthy foods, you could be unknowingly consuming sugar from morning ‘til night and not even realize it. If you want to lose weight, keep it off, and have healthier skin and more energy, a medically supervised sugar detox may be an ideal way to kick off your weight-loss program. A sugar detox program has so many benefits for both your body and mind. Restricting your intake of added sugars by eliminating unhealthy foods from your diet can: • • • • • • • • • •

Improve your mood Give you more energy Eliminate the mid-afternoon slump or “crash” Help you shed unwanted pounds, especially around your waistline Reduce inflammation Reduce muscular aches and pains Reduce fatigue Improve your complexion and reduce breakouts Curb your sugar addiction long term Improve metabolic health

Additionally, when you detox your system from sugar, it often makes fruits and vegetables taste sweet enough to satisfy your sugar cravings. This is an added benefit — as your body and palate adjust to a new level of sweet flavors — that helps you continue to keep an excessive amount of sugar out of your diet in the long run.

he Christmas season is all about giving, and July at BA Med Spa is no exception! Christmas in July is a spectacular sales event that centers around the gift of deeply discounted services offered at the Spa. BA Med Spa, located in Broken Arrow, at 510 N. Elm Pl., has been helping their clients feel their best since 2009. Their ninth annual sales event during the month of July is a huge gift to their current and prospective clients, and a chance for

many to save a great deal of money on the services they provide. “It’s the best chance to save and get the aesthetic treatments you want, and feel good about yourself,” said Owner, Malissa Spacek. “It’s truly a giving event.” Each day, beginning July 1, a new special will launch for 12 days. The specials will consist of their most popular services, with possible discounts on treatments such as BellaFill, EmSculpt and much more. “Just like surprises at Christmas, each

day will be a new surprise special,” said office manager, Sam Spacek. “In years past, many customers have found that it is a good time to buy multiple services at once, as the pricing is so much more affordable during this special time.” Services may also be pre-purchased during the sales event and used at a later date. Pricing for each of the 12 days specials will be good for the entire month of July. The specials will be announced on BA Med Spa social media, on Facebook @BAMEDSPA, and their website at www.baweightspa.com. “This sales event is our gift to our community and our customers to help them achieve their goals and help maintain and build their confidence,” Malissa said. BA Med Spa has always been in the business of helping people. Their mission is “to improve the lives of the patients we serve.” Self-esteem and confidence are at the root of their foundation, allowing their clients to easily achieve their goals, with services for weight loss and anti-aging. “So many of us work, and confidence is crucial in a competitive market,” said Malissa. “We also have many people who come in after a traumatic event, who just want to feel better about themselves, and not look so tired or rundown.” With so many grateful clients, it is no wonder

that they have a firm standing A+ rating with the BBB, with one customer review stating, “I am writing to tell them how much they helped my self-esteem and my appearance. I highly recommend them to anybody wanting the best results for your money.” “It feels so good to know that we are helping people and that we are appreciated,” said Malissa. “It’s good for us to proactively care for ourselves, and make sure we are working to maintain our self-esteem.” As the Christmas in July event is one of their busiest times of the year, it is recommended to be persistent if unable to reach someone on the phone when you call, and leave a message or email, which will receive a rapid response. As always, initial consultations for these treatments are

complementary. “Just come in and talk to us!” said Sam. “It’s the best way for us to help you find the best treatments for you.”

n recent months, an industry boom has taken place in Oklahoma. Dotted across the state are a multitude of cannabis dispensaries, with open doors and minds, eager to educate the public about the medicinal benefits that can be attained with the use of the plant-based products they offer. The Wellness Pharm, located at 1414 E. Third Street, is distinctive in many ways and is firmly rooted in the community it serves. They are located in The Pearl District, just a few doors down from the Church Studio, made famous by the late musician and songwriter, Leon Russell. The Pearl is the area’s newest, hottest local revitalization, and there are many new restaurants, shops, and galleries neighboring The Wellness Pharm’s storefront. All staff at The Pharm are extensively trained, and research oriented. “There is a wonderful connection with cannabis and a healthy lifestyle,” said Clayton Christian, product expert/sales

associate. “The science has come so far in the past decade, but we have a long way to go.” Scientific research has proven that cannabinoids, or the active constituents of cannabis, are beneficial as a remedy for pain and inflammation, as well as a host of other chronic issues that afflict many people, but without the side effects that are common with prescription medications. “It’s perfectly safe, and you can receive tangible benefits with its use,” said Clayton. “There’s something here for everyone, and it can improve your life.” Unique to The Wellness Pharm, is their own grow operation, which enables them to manage every facet of their product, ensuring the highest quality at competitive prices. “80% of the flower we offer is grown by us,” said Dani Felty, store manager. “It’s all thoroughly tested; we know exactly what’s in it, what the levels and cannabinoids are, and what health benefits can be attained.” The Wellness Pharm prides themselves on a completely organic product, with no pesticides or outside chemicals. “That’s something we are really excited about, to have our own grow operation,” she said. “Our own flower is used for extraction in our products, whether it be vapors, ghee (clarified butter for baking), tincture (refined extracts, concentrated), or topicals.” The Wellness Pharm

also carries a line of CBD products, edibles and bath products. “We have many different products to satisfy the needs of all of our clients,” Clayton said. The shop itself is bright and inviting, and the staff is incredibly friendly. For added safety and security for their customers, a stateof-the-art access control system and video surveillance are utilized. They offer a professionalism that is exceptional in the industry. “We respect every person that comes in,” said Dani. “This is a safe space, and all are welcome,” she said. The staff at The Wellness Pharm understands

that confidentiality may be a concern, and are mindful of their client’s privacy requirements. “We are very much about health, wellbeing, the science and helping people,” said Clayton, “because that’s ultimately why we are here.” More information, as well as complete product menu available instore, can be found on their website at www.thewellnesspharm.com.

Annual ice cream festival

n u F e h T p U s p o o c S in Broken Arrow

BY TOM FINK

T

here are many ways to tell someone ‘Thank you.’ Thank you can be said with a card, with flowers or with a gift, but this summer, one of Broken Arrow’s core businesses is saying thank you in the sweetest way possible: with ice cream. Blue Bell Ice Cream, in partnership with the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce, will be hosting the Taste of Summer Ice Cream Festival as a means by which the local creamery offers its thanks to its host community through a day of family-friendly fun and ice cream. “This is Blue Bell’s giveback event – one in which, they give back to the Broken Arrow community,” said Jessica Mugg, events and communications director, Broken Arrow Chamber. “In the past, Blue Bell had hosted the Taste of Summer event out at their factory, but over time, with the number of people coming in and the amount of traffic, the event eventually outgrew the plant. “Following this, Blue Bell representatives approached the Chamber to inquire what could be done to help retain the annual event, as it was growing so big – in previous years, there have been more than 12,000

people in attendance – that it was in danger of going away – no one wanted that,” she continued. “The event proved so successful, it outgrew its space, so we were happy to partner with Blue Bell and moved the event to Central Park on Main Street to retain this popular summer celebration.” Slated for July 20 – not coincidentally during National Ice Cream Month – the Taste of Summer Ice Cream Festival will bring a day of fun, activities, and live entertainment to downtown Broken Arrow, along with ice cream – and plenty of it. “Blue Bell will be providing all-youcan-eat ice cream for attendees, and they always bring out a huge variety of flavors – last year, we had more than 20 different flavors of ice cream available,” Mugg said. “As in the past, there will be a kid’s zone, with inflatables, games, and arts and crafts for the children, as well as a ‘touch a truck’ area to give the kids the chance to get up close and see some bigger pieces of equipment.” For an entry fee of $5, everything is free, except for items purchased from food and marketplace vendors, and the outing allows the public to meet the men and women responsible for Blue Bell Ice Cream.

“It’s a lot of fun - it’s amazing to see all the people who come out to this event and to see the Blue Bell volunteers interact with their customers one-toone,” she said. “Closer to the event date, we’ll be revealing the flavors to be featured this year.” According to Blue Bell’s website, the company offers 66 different flavors of ice cream, 20 of which are offered yearround, with the additional two to three dozen being offered seasonally. Aside from being a uniquely ice cream-centric event, the Taste of Summer is remarkable in that it’s “a truly family event,” according to Mugg. “This is one of those events at which the entire family can come out, enjoy as much ice cream as they want, and enjoy the day together,” she said. “You know how certain events target certain age groups or members of the population? This is an event that’s held specifically for entire families. I kind of think of it as our familyfriendly block party – everyone gets together, has a great time, and enjoys ice cream. It’s such a fun event.” Blue Bell’s Taste of Summer Ice Cream Festival powered by Oneta Power will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Central Park, 1500 South Main Street in Broken Arrow. Paid event parking will be available adjacent to the festival site, with parking proceeds going to benefit the Broken Arrow Band.

Top: We all scream for ice cream, and at the Taste of Summer event, for a $5 entry cost, attendees can enjoy unlimited ice cream. Bottom: A kid’s zone will be set up with activities, crafts, and more for the youngest visitors to this summer’s Taste of Summer event in Broken Arrow.

Mortgage Matters

Q&A:

Accepting Gift Funds By April Bow, Mortgage Originator RCB Bank

May I use gift funds on all types of purchases? Borrowers seeking a mortgage to secure a principle residence or second home may use funds received as a personal gift from an acceptable donor. Restrictions vary between loan types as to how gift funds may be used, for down payment, closing costs or reserves subject to minimum borrower contribution requirements. Gifts are not allowed on an investment property.

Who can give a gift? Gift funds can only come from acceptable donors. A gift can be provided by a relative, fiancé or domestic partner. A relative is more closely defined as the borrower’s spouse, child, dependent or any other individual who is related to the borrower by blood, marriage, adoption or legal guardianship.

If you plan to accept a monetary gift to help you cover homebuying costs, familiarize yourself with how funds may be used and who are acceptable donors.

What documentation is required? Gifts may be evidenced with a gift letter signed by the donor. The gift letter must specify gifted dollar amount, date funds were transferred, donor statement that no repayment is expected and donor identification, including name, phone, address and relationship to the borrower.

How are gift funds verified? Lenders will gather documentation to confirm sufficient funds are in the donor’s account or have been transferred to the borrower’s account. There are three different ways to verify funds: • Copy of the donor’s check and borrower’s deposit slip

Gift donors also should familiarize themselves with the IRS annual gift tax rules, as taxes may be owed if the gift amount exceeds the annual exclusion. Please consult with a tax professional. We are to here to help, even if you are not an RCB Bank customer. Give us a call.

• Lender can document donor gave closing agent the gift funds in the forms of a cashier’s check, certified check or another official check.

Restrictions, limitations and conditions apply for all loan types with approved credit. Opinions expressed above are the personal opinions of the author and meant for generic illustration purposes only. For specific questions regarding your personal lending needs, please call RCB Bank at 855-BANK-RCB.

Gifts of equity are allowed by the seller to the buyer on principle residences and second home purchases. The gift represents a portion of the seller’s equity in the property, and is transferred to the buyer as a credit. This still requires a gift letter and the settlement statement listing the gift of equity.

• Copy of the donor’s withdrawal slip and borrower’s deposit slip

s children, finding simple stones with unique colors or patterns is like finding a piece of treasure. For members of the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society, this magic only continues to grow with age, and the finds more valuable for collecting, or as tools to learn more about our planet and history. On the weekend of July 13-14, the society will host its annual Gem, Mineral, and Jewelry Show at the Exchange Center, Tulsa County Fairgrounds, to share their passion with everyone. Saturday the show will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.. The show is open to the public, and will amaze and inspire visitors with gems, beads, fossils, jewelry, crystals and much more! There will be many exhibits to explore, including a kid’s zone with interactive stations and fun activities, such as fossil excavations and growing crystals. A market with over 28 vendors will be on-site, with items available for sale including jewelry, fossils, artifacts, minerals and gems. Working exhibits will provide entertaining education while demonstrating lapidary arts (work involved in cutting, polishing, or engraving stones or gems), jewelry making, stone cutting and much more. Entry is free for children 12 and under with a paid adult. Scouts,

Military, Police and Fire are also free in uniform. General admission is only $6 per adult or $10 for a two-day pass. Door prizes will be given with drawings every 30 minutes over the two-day event. Prizes could include knives, jewelry, fossils artifacts and more! Event Director, Eric Hamshar, is most excited about the fluorescent room. “There are certain minerals that will fluoresce under UV lights that are special for this activity,” he said. “The rocks don’t look all that

special until the room is made dark and the UV lights are turned on. All of the rocks just glow. It’s amazing.” Eric is an active member with the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society and is the Curator at the DW Correll Museum in Catoosa. The museum mostly houses the eclectic personal collection of DW Correll and contains countless minerals, gemstones, stones, and fossils from around the world. A collection of ice age bones that were discovered in Oklahoma along the Arkansas River is an exceptional part of the incredible collection. The museum was founded in 1971 by DW Correll. “He was a bit of a Renaissance man,” said Eric. “His collection here at the museum is very diverse.”

The museum was left to The City of Catoosa upon Correll’s death in 1999. The museum is an important place for the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society. “The show is a big part of what we do,” said Eric. “Coming to the museum or going to the show could be the beginning of a journey. Here’s what our customers have to say about PermaSeal U.S.A. Preserve Your Investment We wanted to write you to express how satisfied we are with your product, service and the crew. We built our house 3 years ago including the cedar deck, as soon as we moved in we stained the deck and it looked great. Unfortunately, it only looked good for about 6 months and we knew we had to do something to protect our investment, we were not too excited about the prospect of having to stain our deck, at least once a year, to maintain it. Thank God for Permaseal, your team came out, cleaned the deck and permanently sealed the deck with the penetrating sealant. Now it looks just like the day we moved in and we do not have to stain it, unless we want

We are so happy to know we have protected our investment for at least 25 years and we have just scheduled your team to come out and permanently seal our drive way as well. We can highly recommend Permaseal to everyone that is looking for a permanent solution, peace of mind. The whole thing was a very pleasurable experience. From victory gardens and agriculture to rubber, coal, paper, timber, drugs and fibers, plant products supplied the wartime materials that played key roles in the victory. Her presentation is based on her newest book; PLANTS GO TO WAR, A Botanical History of World War II. Once WWII began in Europe and the Pacific, military needs were vast and complex. Jungle warfare, forest survival, and camouflage techniques all required essential plant knowledge. Food to supply the troops

Summer Grilling IT’S NOT JUST BURGERS AND HOTDOGS

BY SHANNON SMITH

I

’m that person that fires up the grill every month of the year. I’ve been known to wear a ski mask to keep warm over the grill during a snowstorm. Summer is my favorite time to grill because there are so many freshly grown vegetables to throw over the coals, bringing out the smoky flavors and delicious char. Grilling isn’t just for burgers and hotdogs. Gather your favorite veggies and drizzle with some olive oil, salt and pepper and let the sizzle begin. You can get creative by adding flavorful dry rubs, freshly chopped herbs or seasoned salt. You can even grill fresh fruit, like peaches and plums by glazing them with oil and searing until you have nice grill marks. Finish fruit with a drizzle of maple syrup or honey, and serve it as dessert with ice cream. I like to chop grilled fruit and add red onions

and jalapeño for a salsa to serve with grilled meat. This summer, I grilled strawberries and served them with whipped cream and balsamic vinegar for a really refreshing dessert that’s not too sweet. When it comes to grilling, I prefer charcoal or wood because I like the smokiness that adds a dimension of flavor. However, the gas-fired grill can certainly be more convenient. You can still get that smoky flavor with a gas grill if you soak a piece of oak or fruit wood in water for at least 30 minutes, then partially wrap it in foil and place it on the grate. Whether I’m grilling meat or vegetables, I don’t use a lot of marinades or dry rubs since I prefer to make simple sauces for the finished dish. One of my favorite sauces is pesto, made from fresh herbs from my garden. I also heat maple syrup until

it becomes thick and sticky, and add a knob of butter to make a tasty glaze for pork, salmon or chicken. Use your favorite Mexican salsa to top grilled veggies or any smoky meat. There are so many ways to finish your grilled masterpiece, but don’t feel obligated to get saucy. Fire has its own way of making food taste spectacular without the addition of anything (except salt, of course). Get creative this summer by firing up the grill, and show your family and friends that you can serve up more than burgers and hotdogs. If you’re looking for some interesting sauces, here are two of my favorite recipes. Find more on beadsandbasil.com, and happy grilling!

Grilled Cod with Salsa Verde

(Serves 4)

There are a lot of variations for salsa verde, and this is one of my favorites. In the summer when I have an abundance of fresh mint I add it to the mix. If you’re in a hurry you can make the salsa in a food processor, but just pulse it so it doesn’t become smooth. Of course, you can substitute the cod for fish that is in season. Serve this with rice or potatoes, and some roasted cherry tomatoes, and you’ve got a beautiful plate of colorful goodness! • • • • • • • • • • •

1/2 cup vegetable oil, for frying 1 shallot, minced 1 garlic clove, minced Juice of one lime 1/2 cup fresh parsley leaves, finely chopped 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves, finely chopped 1 stalk celery, minced (including leaves) 1 small tomatillo, minced 1 Tbsp. capers, minced Salt and pepper Four cod fillets, about 1” thick

Yellow Pepper Pesto This is absolutely my favorite sauce recipe! The roasted yellow peppers add a sweetness that blends perfectly with the cilantro and Parmesan. You can spoon this sauce on eggs, grilled meats or vegetables, or my favorite…..poured over corn chips and eaten like chips and salsa!

• • • • • • • •

2 large yellow bell peppers, grilled, peeled, seeded and chopped 1 clove garlic, chopped 2 tablespoons pine nuts 1 cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. freshly ground pepper

Place peppers, garlic, pine nuts, cilantro and cheese in a food processor and process until combined. With the motor running, add the oil and process until emulsified and season with salt and pepper, to taste.

In a bowl, whisk together the shallot, garlic, parsley, cilantro, celery, tomatillo, capers, salt and pepper (to taste). Brush the cod fillets with olive oil and add salt and pepper to both sides. Sear over a hot grill, about 4 minutes on each side, until fish is firm and flaky in the center. (Alternatively, you can cook the cod in the broiler of your oven by placing cod on a broiler pan set 6” under the heating element, and cooking about 4 minutes on one side. Turn fillets and cook another 4 minutes until done). Cooking time depends on the thickness of your fish. If they are thicker than 1” you might cook longer. Place fish on platter and top with salsa verde. WWW.VALUENEWS.COM JULY 2019 TULSA
