Oklahoma’s s u o i r e t s MyMansions BY CHRIS PUTMAN
When viewing homes today, individuals can drive through subdivisions and see houses showcasing a cookie-cutter look. They all seem to have similar designs displaying brick, stone and wood or some with the newer white farmhouse style, and most so much alike a resident could get lost in their own neighborhood. There are some houses, however, that pepper the state that are a standout and worth an extensive tour or at least a drive-by.
Overholser Mansion,
Oklahoma City Considered the first mansion in Oklahoma, the Overholser Mansion was built in Oklahoma City’s Heritage Hills neighborhood in 1903 and is located at 405 Northwest 15th St. Henry Overholser, referred to as the “Father of Oklahoma City” chose the Queen Anne and Chateauesque architectural styles for the house, something regarded as being out of style. Harwelden Mansion, Tulsa
Harwelden Mansion, a national historic landmark, is a Collegiate Gothic-English Tudor-style mansion located on a three-acre lot that overlooks the Arkansas River at 2210 S. Main St. in Tulsa. It was built in 1923 by a wealthy oilman and philanthropist Earl Harwell and designed by architects Wight and Wight. The structure stands four-stories high, and the 15,000-square-foot mansion, carriage house and gardens occupy a full city block. Every other Thursday enthusiasts can take a walking tour of the mansion, grounds and carriage house and the tour ends with cookies and a cup of English Tea. Are You Struggling to Lose Weight?
With more than 35% of adults struggling with obesity, Oklahoma has the third highest rate of obesity in the United States. Dr. Melita Tate, at Grassroots Healthcare in Tulsa, offers a weight management program designed specifically to meet your health and weight goal needs. Dr. Tate knows one diet doesn’t work for all and offers many weight-loss options to help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight. For people without health insurance, Grassroots Healthcare offers a direct care program for a low-cost monthly fee. If you’re overweight or obese, losing even a small amount of weight can have a significant impact on your physical and mental health, including: reducing the risk of diabetes and heart disease, lowering blood pressure, boosting self-confidence and self-esteem, and lessening pressure on joints to mitigate pain. If you have heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure, a weight management program that helps you lose the weight and keep it off may allow you to discontinue use of any medication you take to manage these conditions.
Weight management at Grassroots Healthcare is aimed at finding the method that best helps you lose the weight and keep it off. Dr. Tate knows one diet plan doesn’t work for all, and she offers different options, including: Keto, HCG (Human chorionic gonadotropin), and Sugar-free detox. Dr. Tate also offers vitamin B12, which may help boost your metabolism, and medication to assist in your weight management efforts. Dr. Tate knows that weight loss is a struggle for many. However, you may have an underlying health condition that makes weight loss even tougher. Dr. Tate conducts a thorough examination to find the root cause of your weight issues so she can develop a treatment plan that works for you. To assist in her diagnosis she may recommend testing for food sensitivities and nutritional deficiencies. She may also test your hormone levels to see if an imbalance may be affecting your weight-loss efforts. For a weight-management program designed just for you, call Grassroots Healthcare or schedule an appointment using the online booking tool.

E.W. Marland Mansion, Ponca City Located in Ponca City is a stunning structure titled the E. W. Marland Mansion, a 43,561 square foot Mediterranean Revival-style mansion. There he built his 26-room Neo-Classical mansion in 1909 with architect Walter Everman. It was the first home in Oklahoma to enjoy air conditioning in 1938. The front entrance is adorned with stunning columns, an elegant staircase greets guests at the entry and the rooms are rich in wood detail. Guided one-hour tours are provided for visitors. Belvidere Mansion, Claremore In the historic district of downtown Claremore sits the Victorian-style Belvidere Mansion. Constructed by the Bayless family in 1907, the home showcases four expansive towers, breathtaking woodcarving throughout the main first-floor rooms and rises three stories to cover 9,000 square feet. The second floor provided living quarters for the original family and the third floor is a 3200 square foot ballroom that was designed with a skylight that opened to allow the hot air of the home to escape during the summer months. Wealthy entrepreneur, builder, businessman and real estate agent John Melville Bayless built the home but did not have the opportunity to enjoy it; he died before it was finished. His widow and children moved in upon completion on Christmas day. A self-guided tour is free and open to the public. A bonus to the home visit is there is an onsite teahouse. Weddings, bridal showers, baby showers, receptions,
rehearsal dinners and tea parties are often held at the home. Located at 121 North Chickasaw Ave., the Belvidere Mansion and Gift Shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The teahouse is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. For more information, log on to www.belvideremansion. com/reviews/home. Visitors can call (918) 342-1127 or e-mail BelvidereClaremore@gmail.com. Oral Roberts University Assistant Professor Rhonda Gallagher teaches communication but also has a passion for history. She enjoys visiting homes that tell a historic story. “I think the Belvidere is my favorite because of all the stained glass and materials that were brought from abroad,” Gallagher said. “The tours also give details about the people who lived there…provide some valuable reminders that Oklahoma in the early days was not all rough and ready.”
Because of the physical distancing aspect built into the tours of any one of these homes, some visits may limit the number of people in one group, may require masks, have changes in days and times of tours or have other limitations. How to finance a
Home Renovation or Construction The more you know, the better your decisions.
Decide your loan need.
Talk to a lender.
Choose a builder.
Construction-to-permanent
Know what you can afford
Make a list of possibilities
The lender releases money to the builder as phases of the construction are completed.
Construction only
A stand-alone construction loan. The homeowner takes two loans. The first loan finances the construction of the home and the second refinances the construction loan into a long-term mortgage.
Renovation construction
These loans are available to people who want to do a renovation, but do not have the money to finance it themselves. You have many options to pay for home improvements, including personal loans, lines of credit or government-insured loans.
Find out how much money you can borrow and the necessary down payment for the loan. Ask a lender to walk you through the process from short-term to longterm financing.
Understand interest
Know how the interest will be paid during construction and how it will change when you convert to a long-term mortgage.
Ask how loan will be paid out Construction loans are typi-
cally paid on a set schedule or as a percentage of project completion. Find out how your lender does payments and communicate that information to the builder before hiring them.
RCBbankMortgage.com | 855-BANK-RCB.
Call your local home builders association. Talk to your real estate agent and get references from people you know and trust.
Do your homework
Once you have a list, find out what kind of insurance the builders and their contractors have. Get references and call all of them. Tour model homes and pay attention to details.
Stay involved Depending on your loan type, your lender will monitor the progress of the project to ensure invoices are paid for work completed. Good communication is key to a successful renovation or home construction project.

I
can’t believe we’ve already made it through half of 2020! Summer made its debut quickly, after one of the most beautiful spring seasons we’ve ever seen. Realistically, I probably just noticed it more this year because I’ve been home instead of traveling. Nevertheless, I did my spring cleaning, wrote an e-book cookbook, and created a podcast

where I chat about my travels and love for food. My best friend, Andrea, is my frequent co-host on the podcast. We met 18 years ago at a tennis drill when she walked on the court wearing her walkman headphones and Ray-ban sunglasses. She had long legs and a great backhand. I thought she was the coolest person
VALUE NEWS TULSA JULY 2020 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM
I’d ever seen. A few months later, our team went to “tennis camp” in south Texas, and Andrea was assigned as my roommate. She brought a sixpack of beer and a German travel guide. She was planning a trip with her mother to Germany that summer, which gave us something to talk about. I had been to Germany a couple of times, and when I started
making suggestions for her trip, I slowly gained some credibility. I recall very little about the tennis training we did at camp, but our evenings were the most memorable. Our tennis coaches served us dinner and cranked up the music with karaoke microphones. Once again, Andrea was the star. She knew the words to every 70s and 80s song on the playlist, and she had the moves to go with them. Since we were roommates, she was kind enough to share the spotlight by letting me sing with her. It was the beginning of our friendship. Since that first trip, we have traveled together at least once a year, usually with our friend, Kim. We plan every meal as if it’s our last, and we never miss an opportunity to put a few dollars in the slot machine, promising to share the winnings, which rarely happens. As we’ve gotten older, we go to bed earlier despite our intentions to stay out late. We spend at least an hour deciding on a movie to rent in our hotel room, and inevitably, Andrea and I are asleep 30 minutes into it, while Kim watches until the end. On my podcast, Dish It Out With Shannon Smith, Andrea and I talk about our friendship, family vacations and adventures around the world. I describe the food I’ve learned in my travels, and sometimes I cook special dishes for Andrea to try before we start recording. Find my podcast on Spotify, Google Play and Apple Podcast. And to make it more enjoyable, make my tarragon lemonade while you’re listening. Andrea and I think it makes everything more enjoyable!

Sparkling Lemonade with Gin and Tarragon Makes 4-6 servings - This is one of the most refreshing drinks for the summer! Lemons and tarragon are a great combination, and they pair beautifully with the gin and elderflower liqueur. I’ve made this cocktail in batches to serve at brunch and pool parties. If you want to keep it in the fridge, leave out the club soda until you’re ready to serve. • • • •
1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup water 8 sprigs of tarragon 2 lemons, thinly sliced
• 3/4 cup gin • 3/4 cup St. Germain (elderflower liqueur) • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice • 12 ounces Club Soda Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan and place over medium-high heat. Bring to a low simmer and stir until sugar is melted. Let cool. Meanwhile, put the tarragon, lemons slices, gin, St. Germain, and lemon juice into a pitcher. Stir in the sugar syrup and club soda. Serve with a lemon slice.

Public Television’s Broadcast Media tracking companies says across the country the coronavirus may have rocked our world but there is a silver lining to the public’s lifestyle change or viewing habits. And Okies are not any different.
General Manager, RSUTV
Nationally, according to these media tracking companies, television usage soared in the early days of the pandemic, (March/April). They observed that COVID-19 has been good for media consumption. Locally, specifically RSU Public TV, eyeballs increased as well. Staying at home during the lockdown resulted in large viewing increases for television news programming, which media researchers quoted as high as 19% for broadcast and 73% for cable. Ratings for network and cable entertainment series increased, too, as did streaming of TV shows. In the first three weeks of March, streaming rose 85% over the previous year. Public TV saw gains too, especially during early fringe and weekend dayparts. RSU Public TV daypart quickly became planned viewing and surpassing primetime programming. Classic Gospel with Bill Gaither remains RSU TV’s #1 show, America’s Test Kitchen moved into second place followed by Ellis Good Food and Cooks Country Kitchen. This is the first time since I’ve been at the station that cooking shows have competed for eyeballs. It’s great to know that when our viewers are at home, they have found RSU Public TV and like the programming we offer.

@HomeLearning
RSU Public TV Announces @HomeLearning Partnership with Public Schools In March of this year the State Department of Education was looking for options to keep kids in school or at best, keep parents, teachers and students of Northeastern Oklahoma engaged with learning during the ongoing confusion of the COVID 19 Pandemic. RSU Public TV “stepped up” in a big way by providing an over-the-air broadcast solution called “@HomeLearning.” Dr. Terry Saul Superintendent of Sequoyah Public Schools (Rogers County) reached out to RSU Public TV about offering over the air live classroom learning. He knew changes were coming due to the COVID-19 crisis, so he wanted to be ready. Saul said he was well aware that many of his students, as well as thousands of other students across northeastern Oklahoma and in metro Tulsa, would not be able to access distance learning/ online classes if schools should be closed.
4 | THE SIGNAL | JULY 2020
Dr Joy Hoffmister and the March 25 which essentially closed all public-school buildings to regular classroom and educational activities due to state and national COVID-19 public health restrictions. As a result, school districts across the state have been tasked with implementing Distance Learning Plans to continue engaging all PreK-12th grade students throughout the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. The Oklahoma State Department of Education decided to work with public TV (PBS Affiliates) such as OETA to provide online distance learning through the PBS portal of PBS Kids. However, in rural Oklahoma access to high speed internet is not adequate enough to provide the streams needed to access the PBS content. Dr. Saul said, “RSU Public TV is free and can be accessed by any student who has a television in their home.” Based on that conversation, RSU Public TV quickly began working with Sequoyah teachers and then reached out to Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent
Dr. Deborah Gist who gave the green light for TPS community organizational resources to be a part of RSU Public TV’s new @HomeLearning program, saying, “We are thrilled to partner with RSU TV to provide additional engagement opportunities for our students through the end of the school year. The live programming that will be provided by our staff and community partners will be another great way for students and families to engage in learning during this time.” On April 9th RSU Public TV and its public education partners, Sequoyah and Tulsa Public Schools and the Tulsa City County Library, launched @ HomeLearning. Every Monday through Friday from 9am to noon, students had ready access to over-the-air learning resources on RSU Public TV Channel 35.1 in order to complete the 2020 school year. Parents had access to some highquality educational content to keep their children engaged. TV Station General Manager Royal Aills said “One of the things we know is this, in times like these our mission to serve the public is paramount. Like public schools, public TV means working together for the greater good of our students, families and communities.” RSU Public TV has been providing educational programming, including telecourses, to residents of northeastern Oklahoma for 30 years. Sequoyah students and parents accessed a blended continuous learning plan with a combination of learning resources for parents, direct instruction via an online platform and RSU-TV. The Sequoyah School system is one of nine Rogers County School districts and serves 1,280 PreK-12 Students. Dr. Saul said, “The first thing that came to mind was all the parents and students who do not have unlimited access to data plans and the Internet. So, we analyzed all possible resources in our area to connect and
provide learning experiences to our students and families, which led us to RSU-TV. We know from data the vast majority of our homes have a TV and that RSU-TV is available for FREE. [We] will provide learning opportunities and experiences with an emphasis on enrichment teaching and presentations. Our goal is to keep our students engaged in learning and continue our vision of instilling the love of learning.” Aills said, “our numbers showed we had a large number of students watching our over the air broadcast as well as on our digital platforms with an average viewership over 15,000.” Sequoyah teachers included multi-grade level lessons in Reading, Math, Social Studies and Science with each lesson including enrichment opportunities. “We hope to give students the opportunity to feel as if they are in the classroom. We feel like this approach will assist parents who don’t have internet or need to use the internet at home for their own job,” Dr. Saul said. Tulsa Public School used resource partners such as: Tulsa Zoo, Tulsa STEM Alliance, YMCA, ahha: Visual Arts, Kang’s Taekwondo; Discovery Lab. The Tulsa City County Library presented, “Build a Reader Story Time” with host Librarian, Tori Hamilton, Children’s Library Associate, Glenpool Library, every Friday. At the end of May the station scaled back @ HomeLearning live broadcasts for the summer. RSU Public TV hopes to continue offering @ HomeLearning throughout the 2020-2021 school year as an after school and out-ofschool resource.

A smart, savvy and fearless redhead, FRANKIE DRAKE is a new detective for a new world. Raised in Toronto by her small-time grifter father, Frankie longed for adventure. After his death, she found it living abroad in Europe and the Middle East. When WWI broke out, she became a dispatch messenger, riding a motorcycle across war-torn country sides in order to deliver crucial messages to the front lines. Frankie’s skill and daring attracted the attention of her commanders who recruited her to work as a spy. Her final mission saw her return to Toronto where her cover was blown. Unemployed and looking to put her unique skill set to work, Frankie established Drake Private Detectives, the city’s first all-female detective agency. With her associate Trudy Clarke, Frankie takes on the cases the police can’t crack and more traditional detective agencies aren’t interested in — solving them as only a modern woman who “colours-outside-the-lines” can.
The Drake Private Detectives take on cases that explore every cross-section of Toronto, from gospel church choirs, bathing beauties and the early cinema scene, to the homes and private parties of the city’s elite. Frankie and Trudy’s fearless sense of adventure gets them into all kinds of trouble, but they always manage to find a way out. They are new detectives for a new world – but is the world ready for them?

Should I repair or replace my fence? Questioning whether to repair or replace your fence? Many homeowners start out by weighing the costs. Repainting or repairing a fence is cheaper and easier than an all-out replacement—at least in the short term. Optionally, you may want to entirely restyle your fence making replacement a must.
3.
Why is my wood fence deteriorating? If you notice signs that your wood fence needs repair like discoloration, warping, and splintering – You should carefully inspect your fence to determine the cause of the problem and whether or not it can be mitigated with a solution like redirecting pooling water or exterminating wood destroying insects. To repair your wood fence, you can patch small holes and cracks with wood filler or putty. For warping or more severe damage, it’s best to replace the affected boards or rails. The downside of both of these repairs is that they will be visible, at least for a while.
4.
My vinyl fence is cracking, what do I do? The biggest threat to vinyl is cracking. To repair your vinyl fence, you have only one choice. If you see a crack in one of your vinyl fence panels, it’s best to replace the affected area. Depending on your fence, this could be an individual vinyl “picket,” or might be an entire section of fence panel between posts. How do I fix my metal fence problems? Aluminum fences are very durable, but parts may need occasional replacement or attention. Like with vinyl, an accident may damage your aluminum fence. Shifting soil can eventually loosen fence posts as well. A loose post due to soil erosion can be steadied with some backfill of either soil or gravel. To repair damage to an aluminum fence, you may need to replace a section or an individual rail. Some aluminum fence repairs require the skill of a welder. To steady a loose rail, a t-brace can make the area stronger and more functional. Be mindful of the
color of the replacement part being used if you don’t plan to paint your fence after repair. 5.
How do I decide when to replace my fence? If your fence needs a major overhaul, here’s a good rule of thumb: if you have to replace more than 20% of the fence panels or pickets, it’s time to replace the entire fence.
REMEMBER: Maintaining your fence may also mean making careful choices about landscaping such as growing vines on your fencing. By checking your fence for damage regularly and making small repairs when needed, you can extend the life of your fence so you don’t need to replace it.
By asking these and any other questions you might have during your consultation, you can fi nd the best Oklahoma fence installers and contractors, like us at Drytect.
