Martial Arts Academy owner Chris Velez recently expanded his business from Owasso and opened a new location at 6022A S. Memorial in Tulsa. Chris began practicing martial arts training at six years old at the Owasso Rec Center (now the YMCA). “I earned my first degree black belt in 1999 at the age of 16. I earned my fifth degree black belt in August of 2011,” Chris explains. “I’ve been instructing since 1998. My specialty is teaching children and passing that ability on to my other instructors. Our methods of instruction have been developed through firsthand experience and our openness to adjust

training curriculum to what is best for the student, while maintaining the quality and integrity of traditional martial arts in a structured, respectful, and disciplined environment.” Chris opened Martial Arts Academy in Owasso in 2003, offering a full-time staff dedicating all of its attention to providing a consistent, professional, and therefore productive martial arts experience. He is excited to be able to reach even more students with the opening of the Tulsa academy. “Our primary objective is developing leaders by way of martial arts training and their journey to black belt,” says

Chris. “Our secondary objective is to create professional opportunities for students to make martial arts their livelihood, or for our younger students to make it a part of their work experience if they choose, either in their shortterm or long-term career path. We want to offer opportunities comparable to the opportunities a student may have through other avenues. The Tulsa expansion is the first step in fulfilling that goal, along with making ourselves available to the students who need and want our type of training.” The new academy is (continued on page 10)
