ost people dream of having the perfect body and many afford the time and energy to get to the gym and get the workouts in that are required for a fit and toned
physique. What if there was a way to tone and tighten trouble areas on the body without having to work out at all? The professionals at BA Med Spa are experts at providing the

ultimate in services that help their clients feel their absolute best. With a range of services involving beauty and weight loss, they strive to stay current with the latest in technology to ensure their clients are receiving the highest quality and most comprehensive plans. The latest and greatest offering at BA Med Spa is EMSCULPT, and is the ultimate fat burner and muscle builder, for a fit and toned body without the extensive time in the gym! Co-owner, Malissa Spacek and office manager, Sam Spacek, are thrilled to introduce this exciting new option as a complement to the spectrum of services they provide. Initial consultations are always free. “If you decide EMSCULPT is for you, we will ensure you understand the science behind EMSCULPT, and exactly how it will work, as well as what is happening in your body,” said Sam. “This tool works out muscles, and the healthy side effect is that you will lose weight.” This nonsurgical procedure is the latest trend for fat reduction, but unlike other similar services, EMSCULPT is proven to build muscle, ultimately increasing weight loss, and speeding up metabolism. These technologies are meant to use in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, supplementing good diet and activity, and not intended to substitute mindful nutrition or regular exercise. abdomen, buttocks and thighs, it is cleared by the Food and Drug Administration. “This technology is proven to increase cellular turnover rates, which help to build muscle,” Sam said. “At the same time, it pushes lactic acid out, for quicker recovery.” “It’s basically like doing 20,000 crunches or 20,000 squats in 30 minutes,” said Malissa. “It’s really like an intensive work out involving involuntary contractions you could not make on your own.” “EMSCULPT is effective in the use of high intensity focused electromagnetic energy to trigger supramaximal contractions that are not achieved without assistance,” Malissa said. “Best part: It’s truly effective, painless and there is no downtime.” One treatment with EMSCULPT includes four sessions; two 30 minutes sessions a week, for two weeks. One treatment cost is $3,000. “Case studies show over one treatment you will see 16-
19% fat reduction, and 19-23% muscle gain in the treated area,” Sam said. “In our experience, clients have seen results after one or two sessions.” As with all services and procedures offered at BA Med Spa, each client’s health is the top priority. “It’s a common trend in America to gain or lose weight rapidly,” said Sam. “We want you to be healthy, to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and get control of your diet. We do want you to lose weight, but our main goal is to get you into a doable lifestyle and maintain your health. You’ll see the best results if you’re healthy.”

Veterans’ Ride Connect
Adds New Transit Provider, JAMM Transit; Expands Service Area BY LISA BOREN
V
eterans’ Ride Connect has added a new transit provider to its consortium, allowing the agency to expand its transportation services for veterans to include four new counties, bringing the total counties served in eastern Oklahoma to 29. The first of its kind in the state, Veterans’ Ride Connect is a groundbreaking cooperative agency of transit providers who work together to provide veterans with safe, reliable and local transportation services across eastern Oklahoma. Veterans’ Ride Connect utilizes a state-of-the-art Mobility Management Center located in rural Oklahoma. The consortium established a onecall/one-click system that links its transit providers, so veterans with transportation needs anywhere in the service area have only one phone number to call to schedule a ride. The Veterans’ Ride Connect consortium is comprised of the following public transits: Pelivan Transit, KI BOIS Area Transit (KATS), Cimarron Public Transit System, Muskogee County Transit Authority, Muscogee (Creek) Nation and, as of March 2019, Veterans’ Ride Connect welcomed JAMM Transit as the newest of its well-known and wellestablished transit providers. JAMM Transit, a public transportation program of INCA Community Services, provides rural public transportation services in Johnston, Atoka, Marshall and Murray counties. The addition of these four counties increases the Veterans’ Ride Connect service area to more than 29 counties across eastern Oklahoma. That’s 29 counties where more than 122,000 veterans reside who can benefit from the transportation services offered by Veterans’ Ride Connect. These 29 counties include Adair, Atoka,

Veterans’ Ride Connect also serves a portion of Seminole County. JAMM Transit has provided transportation resources to the Veterans Center in Sulphur for many years; however, the transit provider recognized that veterans in its service area were still in need of transportation to other veterans’ centers throughout the state. Joining Veterans’ Ride Connect allows JAMM Transit to help even more veterans meet their transportation needs and ensure they have the resources needed to maintain health and well-being. “Since Veterans’ Ride Connect is proving to be a viable resource for veterans with transportation needs in eastern Oklahoma,” said a JAMM Transit representative. “JAMM is excited for this opportunity to join its network.” In 2018, the consortium partners provided more than 16,000 trips for veterans. As it works to meet its goal to provide safe and reliable transportation to enhance the quality of life for veterans living in eastern Oklahoma, Veterans’ Ride Connect continues to collaborate and build partnerships with other transit services throughout the eastern half of the state. Veterans’ Ride Connect transportation services are provided to all veterans regardless of age or financial status. Any person who has served in a military force is considered to be a veteran. Veterans’ Ride Connect will coordinate with any medical facility, as well as Veterans Administration clinics and hospitals. The agency will also work

with Veterans Transportation Services (VTS) and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). There are fees for the transportation services, but an ongoing goal of the consortium is to bring veterans’ costs down through donations and grants. All of the Veterans’ Ride Connect transit agencies use ADA-compliant vehicles, including minivans and shuttle buses. Tis a New Year: Time to roll out the freshly scented cotton in honor of a troupe whom we welcome back after a heavy-duty hiatus… Switch to full spin this season and make sure to get ready for the Washing Well Wenches! the Mud Stage has been officially renamed to “The Laundry Stage.” Booze News: Thank thee to Castleton and surrounding shire legislation, for the festival can now offer a variety of beverages… Huzzah! Within the nine Castleton pubs, patrons may quench their thirst with wine chosen by Her Majesty, a variety of beer from both local breweries as well as the staples of the realm, and new this year… Rum! Patrons who visit the Harbor are certain to share tales of the high seas with the Pirates of the Contessa. Anchors promptly set in Castleton when word of the barrel aged rum at Booty and Tail Pub was received. Local brewmasters and vintners are developing additional selections of which shall be available to patrons during the season. We recommend following the Castle on social media and subscribing to the newsletter for the latest updates.

Whether shopping for homemade desserts at the Sweet Shoppe or the fire forged weapons of the Castleton
Blacksmiths, the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival is available for guests of all ages. The clothing is unique, the food is delicious and most importantly… the memories made are once in a lifetime! Check out www.OKCASTLE.com for themes and events to coordinate with each weekend. any events are hosted by the Indian Women's Pocahontas Club each year to inspire and educate as part of their mission. They have had picnics since the inception of the club, which were held at various ranches and locations throughout the years. Starting 13 years ago they began having the picnics at the Dog Iron Ranch, Will Rogers birthplace in Oologah, Oklahoma. On May 18, 2019, the 13th annual Old-Fashioned Picnic will be held again at the Ranch. The event’s roots dig deep in the history of the Cherokee people, as an annual gathering that embraces the sense of community between friends and neighbors. The event is open to the public and is free to enter; however, a $10 or more donation is suggested. Guests to the event will find music and entertainment, traditional Cherokee games, hog fry, trout pond, vendors and much more. Principal Chief Bill John Baker will be an honored guest at the event. The event will begin at 10 a.m., gates open at 9 a.m. On June 29, 2019, The Club will host their 120th birthday at the JM

“THE 13TH ANNUAL OLD-FASHIONED PICNIC WILL BE HELD MAY 18, AT WILL ROGERS BIRTHPLACE RANCH, OOLOGAH, OKLAHOMA,” Intensely vibrant and intricate is the fabric of Cherokee Nation heritage. A complex weaving of threads of events throughout their history reveals a culture of strength and resilience. For 120 years, The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club have preserved and guarded this history, as well as the traditions and values of the Cherokee people.

Established June 29, 1899, The Pocahontas Club began in Oowala, in the Cooweescoowee District of the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory. Its inception came with strong ideals of a small group of intelligent and cultured girls from the Female Seminary. They started out as a social club and soon blossomed as caretakers of their culture, heritage and communities. Today, the organization calls Claremore home and is the oldest chartered club in Oklahoma. Council Member, Keith Austin, strongly supports the mission of the club, having grown up as the son of an extraordinarily active member. “The Pocahontas Club has always been the keepers of culture and history of the Cherokee people when the tribe was unable to.” he said. The Pocahontas Club arose to defend against

cultural oblivion. “One of their missions was, and remains to be, to keep the Cherokee culture and history alive,” said current club President, Vicki Baker. The club proudly counts Oklahoma’s favorite son, Will Rogers, among its past members. In the early years, some men were allowed in the club. Rogers was a member before he became a celebrity. Club membership today is exclusively for
Cherokee women who can trace their ancestry back to the Dawes Roll. Active member, Ollie Starr, is quick to halt any ideas that The Pocahontas Club is merely a social club. “We strive to make strong impacts in our communities,” she
said. “It’s about our history and what we do to preserve it.” Previous Club President Debra West adds, “We have to be visible all of the time, and we try to be out there supporting the rest of our communities. We are movers and shakers passing down the wisdom we have committed to protect.” In addition to active relationships within the community, the club provides annual scholarships, endowments, and support to Cherokee citizens to support higher education. “We are the caretakers of our culture, heritage, our history and our communities, with an emphasis on education,” said West. “The Cherokee have always valued education,” added Baker. “It began w with one student in the beginning, aand now we provide assistance to around 15 students a year,” she said.

products, techniques, and services to enhance and exceed every client’s expectations. This includes elevating the industries value on cleanliness and standards of sterilization of instruments. We make provision for the most sanitary nail care services available. For privacy, all pedicures are done in the back of the studio,” Debbie said. Debbie performs the manicures and pedicures. She is currently recommending the new product of CND Shellac Finish for polished nails. She states, “your nails shouldn’t hold you back, CND allows for freedom to continue looking fashionable in your busy life.” The

“Original Power Polish,” CND Shellac pairs an easily wearable polish with an incomparable glossy sheen that will last up to 14 days of wear.” She claims that “there is no nail damage and the polish is “easy on - easy off.” Nichole McGinnis, licensed aesthetician, has been practicing since 1998. She is both owner and manager of Reveal Salon and “loves what she does,” speaking to the elective treatment of skin and hair. She was inspired to start the salon approximately six years ago, located at 91st and Memorial in Tulsa. She has an experienced staff of men and women who are experts in hair, skin and nails. It was important to her to have a dedicated staff of independent practitioners who would work as a team but really “more like a family,” said Nichole. Her “talented and gifted staff is second to none! They are the best in the world!” she claims. By having a superb staff, she is able to afford an appealing atmosphere where “every man and women can be catered to individually and enjoy returning time and again.” Nicole believes the true escape (her salon) is to make sure that each service has an amazing outcome and clients leave with a sense of quality care and friendship.” The employees in the salon treat their clients as friends and family. An example was given by Debbie
ll Year Long head to toe Edmonds, Certified nail technician. She stated that there was a client that was new in town that came to the salon to have a manicure and pedicure. “She made friends at the salon and kept coming back.” She said that she had “found friends in Tulsa (referring to the salon), and this helped her to settle in.” Debbie says, “this is just who we are!” Nicole is a key figure in providing aesthetic care. She describes it as an “acne treatment program that combines chemical peels with personalized home care and
lifestyle recommendations to achieve clear, healthy skin.” Your first treatment includes an in-depth consultation with an information packet and treatment plan. You can read some before and after photos and read client reviews at AcneSpecialistTulsa.com. Some of the services performed include: Custom Corrective Facial, Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels, Rezenerate Facial Treatment, OxyGeneo-Exfoliate, Infuse, Oxygenate, Skin Classic, and Brow shaping and tinting. For a healthier, younger looking skin, Nicole recommends and is very focused on the “Skin Classic.” This treatment involves “electrodesiccation that treats skin imperfections such as skin tags, hyperpigmentation or age spots, cherry angiomas, sebaceous hyperplasia, seborrheic keratosis and small facial capillaries.” Of course, each treatment is discussed at length with the client to customize and meet his/her individual needs.
Reveal Salon is ready and willing to serve the community. The salon is the place to “get your shine on all year long.”

Life Unexpected Ahead Are you covered?
Is Loan Protection Right For You? By Curtis Bales VP Branch Manager, RCB Bank When you take out a loan for a new vehicle, you may be asked if you want to add payment protection or credit insurance.
Short-Term Payment Protection Options: The inability to pay your bills can lower your credit score, which leads to higher interest rates on future loans and credit cards. Credit insurance costs vary between lenders and loan terms. Talk to a lender about your personal situation to determine if payment protection is right for you.
In the event of an unforeseen circumstance, credit insurance provides financial support to protect your loan from default. Before you decide, think about your needs and know your options.
Expect the unexpected. No one likes to think about getting seriously injured in an accident or having a sudden major medical issue, but the reality is it can happen. If you cannot work, you likely will not get paid. How do you manage your auto payment, living expenses and possible medical bills if limited or no funds are coming in? Don't wait until a crisis to plan your savings strategy. Plan now how to protect your family (and your assets) from financial hardship.

itting along Tulsa’s iconic I-44 are dealerships that have been in existence for more than 50 years. ye Even though Route 66 Nissan of Tulsa was established in 2017, it stands tall among its competiti competition, with exceptional customer service and pricing. “A Better Way!” is Route 66 Nissan’s motto. m It’s one that the staff com is fully committed to, says executive manager C Chuck Mulkey, from the moment a customer steps onto the lot to long after they drive away. “We’re al always striving to be the best we ca can be,” he said. “We are going to ttake care of the customer, no matter what.” That customer cu care begins with that first ggreeting says general manager D David Pepe. “We wan want you to feel comfortable when you come in. We know that everyone’s process is a little bit different, and we want to respect that perso person’s process. Our job is to educate th the customer, give them all the reason reasons to buy and not put any pressure on o them.” And the sale isn’t the end of Route 66’s great customer service.
“When you hand the keys to a customer, a lot of dealerships think that’s when their job’s over. For us, we feel like that’s when our job starts,” Pepe said. “We want you to keep coming back. We want you to feel like you can trust us to have your oil changed, to have your transmission repaired or to send your family or friends to one of my guys who took care of you on the front side. You have to build this culture of followup and customer service, and it starts with us as the management team and goes all the way down.” Exceptional customer care is a team effort that Route 66 Nissan takes pride in, and it can be seen in every department throughout the entire dealership. “We appreciate everybody that’s behind the scenes—our cashiers, our parts department, our warehouse workers. We need everyone.” Mulkey said. Along with exemplary customer service, Route 66 Nissan strives to offer no-haggle pricing that cannot be beaten. “We’re as competitive as anyone in the Nissan market,” Mulkey said. For the second consecutive year, they will give a vehicle to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital giveaway, the only dealership in Oklahoma to have done so. “St. Jude’s is a huge part of what we believe in–giving back,” he said. Mulkey says it’s all about relationships and building trust within the community. “I’ve been doing this long enough that I’ve sold people cars earlier in my career and then I’ve sold their kids cars when they turn 16 and then I’ve sold their kids cars when they are getting out of college. ince 1947, the Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo has roped in audiences with its cowboys, competitions and crowd-pleasing events. Now entering its 73rd year, the small but strong local rodeo shows no signs of slowing down as cowboys and cowgirls alike prepare for its return to the Stampede Park in Claremore. “Rodeos are part of our state’s history, part of our heritage – it’s a hometown sport for us, like the NFL or NASCAR,” said Tanya Andrews, director, VisitClaremore. “Rodeos are a tradition that’s been handed down and carried on through the years, through generations. I think small rodeos like the Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo are a good example of that, and it goes without saying that the rodeo wouldn’t have lasted for so long without so much support from the community.” A five-time PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) winner of Small Rodeo of the Year, the Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo 2019 will be bringing back all of the old favorites, as well as adding a few new ones for the crowd to enjoy. “Events returning to the rodeo this year will be the usual -- bull-riding,

of course, bronc riding, team roping, barrel racing and for the younger competitors, ‘mutton busting,’ with a mutton busting qualifier for the first time at this year’s rodeo,” Andrews said. “This will also be the second year that the rodeo is going to have Clem McSpadden Tub-Handle Classic
"Rodeos are part of our state's history, part of our heritage – it's a hometown sport for us, like the NFL or NASCAR." Steer Roping Thursday night. We started that (event) last year, to great success, so we’re bringing it back again this year.” In addition to his career in Oklahoma politics, Rogers County native Clem McSpadden was involved in rodeos throughout the U.S., including the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas and the Calgary

Stampede, as well as being credited with the discovery of country and western star Reba McEntire. “One thing that’s unique to our rodeo is that it’s where world-known rodeo announcer Clem McSpadden got his start,” Andrews said. “Clem helped to bring national attention and interest to our rodeo, as well as being from the area, so in a way, we’re carrying on something that he helped to grow in popularity. Ours may be a small rodeo, but it continues to grow every year, and it’s centrally located on the rodeo circuit. It’s where many of the contestants choose to come when they’re ‘routing’ their appearances – many (contestants) come back every year because it’s a high-quality rodeo, at which the contestants advance well in their points and wins as they make their way to the national competition. “Last year, we had a record number of contestants – more than 610, which is a lot for a rodeo of our size,” she said. In addition to event competitions, entertainment this year will be provided by Tomas Garcillazo. “Tomas is a traditional charro, rope artist, and horseman and he always performs with his wife, and his young

son, ‘Little Louie,’ who will also be performing some tricks of his own,” Andrews said. “He’s performed in Claremore in the past, but this will be his first time back in several years.” Also scheduled to entertain the crowd will be Cody Cavanaugh with WI-FMX (Wisconsin Freestyle Motocross), who will provide rampbuilding demonstrations, as well as professional freestyle motocross (FMX) demonstrations, fully mobile FMX take off and landings, fully mobile quad (four-wheeled dirt bike) take off and landings, and more. My daughter and me making Mom’s apple pie.
Apple Pie with Milk (serves 8) Crust: • 3 cups flour • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 tablespoons sugar • 2 sticks butter, cold and cut into 1/4” cubes • 1/2 cup ice water In a large bowl combine the flour, salt and sugar. Add the cold butter pieces, and cut into the flour, using a pastry blender or two knives. Alternatively, you can put ingredients (except water) into the bowl of a food processor and pulse 20 times. Add cold water and gently blend into the flour mixture until you have a soft dough. You may need to add a bit more water, but don’t let the dough get too wet. Do not knead the dough, just work it together with your hands into 2 equal size discs. 44 |

Wrap each disc tightly in plastic wrap and put into the refrigerator for at least 45 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. When ready to assemble the pie, remove the dough from the refrigerator and roll one out on a floured board. Roll into a circle that will fit into a 9” pie pan. Lift the dough and place into the pan, pressing lightly into the bottom and up the sides. Roll the second disc in the same way, but slightly larger than the first. Apple Filling: • 7 or 8 Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced thinly • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

• 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/3 cup flour • 2 tablespoons butter, cut into pieces In a large bowl, combine the apples, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Pour into crust and dot with butter pieces. Place the second dough over the filling and seal the edges, crimping or pressing with the back of a fork. Using a paring knife, cut slits on the top of the pie to allow steam to escape during cooking. Cover the rim of the pie with aluminum foil pieces or a metal ring made for covering the crust during baking (to prevent burning). Bake for 45-50 minutes, removing the foil or ring after 30 minutes of baking. When the pie is golden, remove from oven and cool completely. Serve in slices with cold milk.
Memories of My Mom BY SHANNON SMITH
M
other’s Day was always a big holiday at our house. We spent the day celebrating my mom, starting with making her breakfast in bed, pinning a corsage to wear to church, and treating her like the queen she was for an entire day. I am the oldest of three girls, and our mom was a homemaker who didn’t work outside the house. Well, that’s not really true. We lived on a ranch, and she often worked outside, even though she preferred to be indoors. She didn’t exercise a day in her life (on purpose), and she detested getting hot or perspiring. However, when she and my dad decided to leave the city life and move their three daughters to the country, well Mom was forced to spend some time outside. The day our bull got out of the pasture into our backyard was a vision I will never forget. Mom ran out with her dish towel and swatted that 1200-pound bull across the backside until he ran through the gate back into the field full of laughing heifers. She rode the John Deere lawn mower all over the yard with a wet towel to wipe her face. She decided to take up gardening one year, and Dad tilled an abandoned horse corral where we planted rows and rows of vegetables. Guess who got to water and weed those rows all summer. It was not my mother. Fortunately, I loved being outside, so I bargained with my sisters, and they took the indoor chores while I basked in the sun and sat on a bucket weeding rows of bean and tomato plants. However, when it came to cooking all those vegetables, once
they were ready for harvest, well that was a different problem. You see, my mom did not like to cook. We nearly always ate dinner at home every night, but Mom wanted to spend as little time as she had to in the kitchen. That was during the 1970s when canned food and tv dinners were all the rage. Cake mixes and Rice-a-Roni came in a box, and all you had to do was add water. We thought we were eating delicious food, and it wasn’t until I was in college that I found out you could make brownies homemade, not from a box. There was one thing my mom would make about once a year, and that was apple pie. She made her own pie dough, and I remember her frustration rolling it out and fitting it into the pie pan. She served slices of her pie in soup bowls because we ate it swimming in a pool of cold milk. It was delicious! My daughter is now grown, and she grew up in a very different kitchen environment than I did. She’ll remember her mother spending a lot more time in the kitchen, and our house usually smelled like food, although not
always pleasant. The days I cooked fish or roasted chiles were days my children preferred to be away from home. They loved visiting their grandmother during their childhood, particularly because she served them hot waffles with margarine for breakfast. It was years before they realized those were Eggo Waffles, and not homemade. My daughter, Meredith and I often cook together, and occasionally we

make my mom’s apple pie. I wish I had a photo of my mother cooking, or forcing that dough into its pan, but we’ve got plenty of photos of Mom working outside. I wish every mom a happy Mother’s Day, with hopes that your children remember the silly stories.
