Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo Returns to Northeastern Oklahoma
BY TOM FINK

fter pleasing crowds for more than three-quarters of a century, drawing contestants from across the state, region and country, and being named by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and the Woman’s Rodeo Association (WRPA) as Small Rodeo of the Year, what’s next for the Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo?

|
“If anything, the rodeo has grown – it’s grown in popularity among contestants, which we’ve been seeing an increase in those coming to compete every year – last year, we had 745 (contestants) which was a record number for us,” said Tanya Andrews, executive director, Visit Claremore. “It has consistently grown, and with the PRCA, the Stampede Rodeo was consistently in the ‘small rodeo’ category, until this year, when we’ll be moving up into the ‘medium’ category for the first time in this rodeo’s history.” While in the “small rodeo” category, the Will Rogers

Stampede PRCA Rodeo was named six times (out of being nominated seven times) as Small Rodeo of the Year, but with the rodeo’s new classification, this means “bigger and better things” for both contestants and attendees, Andrews said. “No. 1, I think this shows (rodeo) contestants that we are a serious contender in the PRCA circuit, as going from the small to medium classification, we’ve been able to add prize money,” she said. “We’re staying consistent in dates, times, etc. but when a contestant is having to choose which rodeos to compete in, the medium-sized rodeos simply offer more than the small rodeos do, and as such, we’re casting a wider net to attract a much broader assortment of potential new contestants.” The new classification for the rodeo similarly means increased interest
from potential vendors, sponsors and attendees. “Even with the new categorization, the rodeo will still have great entertainment, all the great performances – the bull-riding, saddle broncs, barrel racing, etc.,” she said. “We won’t be having a concert after the rodeo this year, but instead, we’re partnering with Claremore Main Street to have some activities at Boots on the Boulevard (monthly food truck event) May 26, at which, we’ll have live entertainment and a street dance in downtown Claremore.” In addition to the rodeo itself, the arena also has seen improvements in recent years. “The property owners, the Rodeo Arena Cooperative, have put significant time and money into significant infrastructure improvements,” she said. “Among these improvements, we’ve recently connected the bathrooms to the city sewer line, which was long-overdue as, for 75 years, the sewer lines (at the rodeo grounds) had been on septic. Before connecting to city utilities, the restrooms weren’t able to handle the capacity because of the crowds, which meant we would
have to bring in porta-potties during events.” Further improvements planned for the rodeo arena are new bathrooms, a new concession stand, additional parking, and a new shelter to serve as the hospitality area, with “great interest” in private parties who are wanting to assist the cooperative toward helping upgrade the property to its full potential. “With the growth of the rodeo over the past decade, it’s really turned into organizers and they’ll be helped. more of a destination event – people There’s a great camaraderie of people are coming here from all over from the community, people who the state, and many from have come together over the last outside the state,” she said. couple of years to help make this When asked what event possible.” distinguishes the Will Rogers Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Stampede PRCA Rodeo from Rodeo will be held May 26 through similar events across the May 29 at the Will Rogers Stampede state, Andrews said it was the Arena, 13601 East 480 Road in people. Spring Cleaning! Great Ways to Keep Your Home Safe and Smelling Great
W
inter has finally faded away and spring colors are in bloom. While it might look restorative outside your home, your chimney and dryer vents may still be dealing with a gloomy, cold weather hangover. A good spring cleaning is an opportunity to refresh your home and enable you to enjoy all the benefits of Oklahoma’s seasonal change. Here are a few reasons why spring cleaning is important: • Breathing – Seems like a simple issue considering it’s a necessity of life. But when your home is lingering of creosote and ash the air becomes stagnant, and your respiratory health suffers. A solid spring chimney cleaning improves the air quality of your home and makes you feel better. With a clean smelling chimney, your mood will improve and you’ll be open to welcoming visitors. • Safety - Approximately 23,000 chimney fires occur every year, causing nearly a billion dollars in damage, and potentially the loss of lives. Having your chimney professionally cleaned annually will help you avoid a disaster. • As for your dryer vent, lint doesn’t Left: For over 43 years, Black Hat Cleaning Services owner David Harris, Sr. has been serving N.E. overall health in the home. Chimney sweep services, as well as dryer duct cleaning, are essential for fire prevention, and air duct cleaning is vital for the air quality inside the home, ensuring a healthy breathing environment. These maintenance services also help keep your home smelling nice too. Fire burning chimneys are recommended to be cleaned depending on wood-burning capacity, with a standard recommendation of professional sweep every 3 to 4 ricks of wood burned. Gas burning fireplaces only need to be cleaned every 15 to 20 years. “If you’re not sure if your chimney needs cleaning, at least have it inspected,” David said. “If you’ve never had it cleaned, clean it!” Dryer duct cleaning is sometimes overlooked by homeowners but should be a top priority regarding fire safety. Many home fires are caused every year by the lint that gets trapped within the pipes and, once ignited, can quickly burn throughout a home. “Dryer lint is the best thing you can use to start a campfire,” said David. “It is highly flammable. You don’t want that trapped in your dryer vent as a fire hazard.” David’s sound advice for homeowners is only a small part of the comprehensive service provided by Black Hat. Honesty and integrity are at the forefront of his business practice and what his customers see when they see him in his top hat. “My customers know that they can trust me to be honest, and take care of them, give them peace of mind.” Over the years, just as David’s hat has gotten taller, the services have evolved to become more efficient, time-saving and thorough. Chimney cleaning can take up to 45 minutes. David loves his work and the people he serves. “This is my 43rd year in business with many more years ahead.”

So, what are some tips that can help a beginner take photos like a pro? Here’s a checklist: 1. Use the rule of thirds. Beginning photographers innately want to put the subject of the photo in the center of the frame. Anything in art

The Art of Woodcarving The 2022 Woodcarving and Arts Festival
BY CHRISTY STEPHENS
T
he art and utilitarian skill of wood carving is one of the oldest, most time-honored crafts in the world. It is an ability that has numerous benefits – producing an object for use, creating beautiful works of art, and having a marketable skill. Wood crafting also has many mind and spirit benefits; it is a calming, stress reducing activity, harnesses creativity, provides a meditative state, and connects the artisan to nature. In August, the 2022 Woodcarving and Arts Festival returns for its 47th year, taking place at the Broken Arrow Rose District’s Central Park Community Center. The event is hosted by Eastern Oklahoma Woodcarvers

Association with a variety of craft vendors to visit, buy and learn from. “We hope to have 40 to 50 carvers and folk craft vendors,” states Bob Block, Event Coordinator. “In addition to the wood carvings, other art forms to be featured are stained glass, embroidery, metal arts, painting, yarn items and more!” Wood turning, weaving, mosaics, jewelry, ceramics, basketmaking, quilting, beading, leather working and blacksmithing are all artisan disciplines that will be on display and available for interactive information. Block, a pediatric physician, has been involved in woodcarving for four decades.
“I began by carving a few lettered signs, and then stumbled upon a class to learn carving about 40 years ago – the rest is history!” Block exclaims. The festival is a wonderful opportunity to individuals of all ages who have always had an interest in learning new crafts. During the shutdowns of the previous year, many people filled their time by exploring new projects and skills; and the art of woodcarving has attracted new carvers, young and old, experienced and new, according to Block. “Highlights of the event include a carving contest and a beginner’s class in carving, as well as several raffle items and all the vendor’s displays – all with free admission!” says Block. “Although, honestly, it is hard

to spotlight only a few; everything is unique, and it is always fun to chat with the vendors.” Individuals 13 years of age and over may take part in the seminars and attend demonstrations of the myriad woodworking art forms. Attending the festival is a wonderful opportunity to see and explore one of the oldest known art and utility forms of humankind; attendance will also help the Eastern Oklahoma Woodcarvers Association, the sponsors of this event. The 2022 Woodcarving and Arts Festival takes place Aug. 12-13, from
9:00a.m. until 5:00p.m., located at the Central Park Community Center at 1500 S. Main in Broken Arrow. For more information, contact Bob Block at 918- 693-2418 or email Robertblock@ouhsc.edu; Bill Payne at 918251-8734 or email wudcrv@cox.net; or visit the website, www.eowa.us.

OSDH Shares Biosecurity Tips on Safely Raising Backyard Poultry After First Case of Avian Influenza was Detected in a Wild Duck in Oklahoma BY ERICA RANKIN
E
ach year, as spring arrives, many people begin or continue raising backyard poultry flocks. These flocks have been gaining in popularity over the past several years and interest in them continues to grow. “The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) wants to remind flock owners to learn about and practice essential prevention measures to minimize the risk of disease transmission, known as biosecurity,” said LeMac’ Morris, the State’s Public Health Veterinarian. “Biosecurity practices are vital in protecting not only your own birds, but neighboring flocks as well as our nation’s commercial poultry industry, from diseases like highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).” HPAI is an influenza virus that can cause severe illness and sudden death in chickens. Wild birds are also susceptible to HPAI but are more resistant to the virus and rarely show signs of illness. However, while wild birds may appear healthy they can be carriers of HPAI which is deadly to domestic birds. Chickens exposed to wild birds carrying the HPAI virus are at greatest
risk for developing this disease that can quickly become widespread to backyard and commercial flocks. Although rare, there are cases where humans have been infected. “These are reasons why biosecurity practices are important for both commercial flock and backyard flock owners,” said Morris. “An outbreak in a backyard flock could threaten commercial flocks due to the human factor. For instance, the individual who delivers propane, the feed truck driver or the person who works on the commercial operation can carry the virus from their own backyard flock to a commercial flock resulting in an outbreak that may infect millions of birds.” Examples of biosecurity practices to protect backyard flocks include, don’t set up bird feeders near chicken coops, keep feed covered to protect it from exposure to wild birds and rodents, avoid wearing boots and clothes used to bird hunt when caring for domestic birds and, if possible, house birds in a pen that prevents wild birds and predators from entering. It is also important to practice good
hygiene and monitor children who are interacting with poultry by following these safety tips: • Never eat, drink or put anything in your mouth while handling poultry. • Wash hands with soap and water immediately after handling any type of bird. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 62 percent ethyl alcohol. • Do not wash animal food and water dishes from a backyard poultry flock in the kitchen sink. • Do not let children younger than 5 years of age handle or touch chicks, ducklings, or other live poultry without supervision. Children younger than 5 years of age are more likely to get sick from exposure to germs like Salmonella. • Symptoms of Salmonella are diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, headache, muscle aches, nausea and sometimes vomiting. Blood is sometimes found in the stool. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, but can last as long as two weeks. “Following good biosecurity and hygiene practices can make a backyard flock a safe and enjoyable experience,” said Morris. “Raising poultry is a great 4-H or FFA project for youth and of course there is nothing better than home grown eggs for breakfast.” The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) protects and improves public health through its system of local health services and strategies focused on preventing disease. OSDH provides technical support and guidance to 68 county health departments in Oklahoma, as well as guidance and consultation to the two independent city-county health departments in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
