I

t’s that time of year again. Friday night lights, Saturday game day tailgate parties, the cooler days of Fall and the leaves changing colors. I love this time of year. It is our family’s favorite. With football starting and hunting season just around the corner life is full of hope and promise. Just as it requires preparation to get ready to play in that big game; so too, it takes preparation when planning for that “big day” of retirement. The last few years preceding retirement and the first few years immediately following retirement, is what we call “the retirement red zone”. The reason we call it the red zone is because these years are most crucial to the outcome of your financial retirement success. It’s just like in football where the red zone is the last 20 yards before crossing the goal and is critical to winning or defeat, the last few years before and after your retirement can make you or break you. It’s during this time that you need to develop a careful, drawn-out strategic plan….a GAME PLAN. Your playbook should be detailed with all the x’s and o’s and provide a careful strategy for how much you need to have saved, what debt you need to have paid off, what your budget is now and what it will be, and a specific plan for how to replace your income in retirement. Your playbook

should include multiple investment strategies to both defend against losses and advance toward your goals. These years often require sacrifice in order to meet the goal line, and a great coach to help get you there. We want to help you make your retirement a winning success!

HONEY BAKED

BY DUANE BLANKENSHIP

T

his year, more than 2.5 million customers will invite Honey Baked Ham to be an important part of their holiday gatherings from Thanksgiving through the beginning of the New Year. It all started back in the 1940s when founder Harry Hoenselaar patented the perfect final touch to his delicious gourmet hams…the spiral-slicing process. In addition, Harry also created a unique curing and cooking process that produced unbelievably high quality, bone-in smoked hams. In 1957, Harry opened his first Honey Baked Ham Co. store in Detroit, Michigan. The company is still family-owned and each product still employs the same procedures Harry created from the beginning…one at a time. This is just one of the unique features that makes Honey Baked 10 |

Ham and Turkey so deliciously different from similar products. Whole Honey Baked Turkeys are sold roasted, smoked or Cajun style. In addition to the exquisite taste, turkey breasts are fully cooked and ready to serve, allowing you to spend less time in the kitchen and more time celebrating life with friends and family, one meal at a time. Honey Baked Ham Co. and Cafe of Tulsa is owned and operated by Lee Griffin and the store Manager/Partner is Nikki McAnelly. Lee worked for the parent company 19 years and has owned the Tulsa store for seven. The company’s first employee, Michael Voumard, has 14 years and still serves the organization. Honey Baked Ham of Tulsa is locally owned and operated and the three members of the management team have a combined total of more than 50 years in the Honey Baked business. “Honey Baked’s core values include treating customers like gold, treating everyone with respect, doing the right thing, delivering quality and growth worthy of the brand and making a difference while having some fun!,” says Lee. When you visit the store for lunch, to pick up a delicious dinner or use them to

cater an event at your home or business, you’ll readily witness how well Lee and his crew live up to the values instilled by the parent company. Each of the 12,000 people employed during the holiday season is instrumental in helping equip the company to deliver the premium quality products millions of customers have come to expect from Honey Baked Ham. PAMPER YOUR PUP A DAZZLING GROOMING EXPERIENCE

BY WHITLEY MUMM

A

t Kelly’s Dazzle Dog Grooming Spa, your pets aren’t just guests, they’re family. From the moment you walk in the door, you and your furry friend can feel at home. Most importantly, you and your dog will build a personal relationship their groomer. For owner Kelly McKinney, the groomer-dog relationship is of utmost importance. “When you walk in, we want you and your dog to feel relaxed,” Kelly McKinney ey treats a happy y customer to to o a nail trim.

said McKinney. “It can be nervewracking to leave your dog with strangers… We want to put your mind at ease. When you leave your dog with us, you can be sure people who truly love dogs are treating them wonderfully. We’re all dog-people here.” McKinney began grooming at eighteen years old; she learned from her mother who groomed for 50 years. In 2009, she moved from a 650 square feet shop and expanded to her current location, which spans over 2500 square feet. She said the extra space cultivates the “open-door” atmosphere of Dazzle Dog. “We have an open-door policy here. When you come in, you can walk through our entire shop. You and your dog can go wherever you like and see whatever you like. We find that makes our dogs, and their owners, feel more comfortable.”

Ideally, you should take your dog to the groomer every four to eight weeks, depending on their breed and coat. At Dazzle Dog, baths start at $25, and include nail trimming, ear cleaning, gland expression, and a trim. A full grooming starts at $40, and includes everything previously mentioned, as well as a full haircut. “We aren’t a one-size-fits-all groomer,” McKinney said, “We take the time to get to know you and your dog, your needs, and what you want. We’ll never do anything without asking you first.” Have a nervous pup? You can bring them by Dazzle Dog any time, so they can get familiar with the sounds and smells. They can even meet their groomer before their appointment. McKinney said the best part about owning Dazzle Dog Grooming Spa is seeing the countenance change in the dogs after they’ve been groomed. “We have just as many scratch marks on the front of our door as we do on the inside,” McKinney said, “Dogs love coming and getting groomed, and we love your dogs as much as if they were our own.” Call or drop in to visit Kelly’s Dazzle Dog Grooming Spa today!

HATS OFF TO WILL: RELIVE THE PAST

& INSPIRE THE FUTURE

BY AMY BETH DOBBINS

O

n a summer evening in 1899, a group of Cherokee youth gathered for two reasons: to hold the charter meeting of The Pocahontas Club and to dance the night away in a newly-raised barn in Rogers County. What started as a social club, however, has evolved into so much more over the past 100 plus years. The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club (IWPC) currently boasts approximately 200 Cherokee women, ranging from age 18 to 101. The intergenerational group hosts multiple events open to the public along with monthly membership meetings. The purpose of each activity is clear: “…to promote and preserve our Cherokee history and culture and to focus on higher education for Cherokee students,” explains Ollie Starr, IWPC Event Coordinator. Annual events include, among others: the Old Fashioned Picnic each May at Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch in Oologah; an annual Tea and Wild Onion Feast as well as weekly art classes offered at the Boys and Girls Club of Chelsea. One of the most notable events each year hosted by the IWPC, 20 |

however, is the Hats Off to Will gala, paying tribute to the late Will Rogers as well as his family members. This year, Hats Off to Will kicks off on Saturday, November 4 at 4 p.m. at the Will Rogers Downs Event Center, three miles east of Claremore on Highway 20. A catered dinner and entertainment will follow at 5 p.m. Featured entertainment includes something to delight young and old. For starters, Will Roberts, a Will Rogers impressionist will dazzle attendees with his quick humor and trick roping skills. Roberts has been a featured act of Cirque du Soleil and is a nationally syndicated radio host of the “Will Rogers Weekly Telegram”. Also on tap for the evening is lively music by nationallyacclaimed and award-winning Cherokee fiddler, Regina Scott. To share her musical talents at age twelve with the crowd as well is the current Miss Junior Red Fern, Katelyn Meyers of Tahlequah. A live auction featuring all kinds of originals as well as a showcase of Cherokee artisans round out the evening. Fun is not in short supply at this event, as everyone is

encouraged to don a favorite hat in remembrance of Betty Rogers, Will’s late wife who had a flare for headwear. Participation pays at this gala, as the winner of the “Best Hat Contest” will walk away with a $100 giftcard! Hats Off to Will serves as a crucial fundraiser for IWPC in order to accomplish its goal toward the future. Each year, the IWPC is able to award scholarships to Cherokee students in order that they may attend the college or career tech of their choice. Approximately ten $600 scholarships are awarded, annually, to deserving Cherokee seniors. The scholarship recipients commit to serving their community in exchange. Since beginning the scholarship endowment three years ago, the IWPC has awarded $18,000. “We have seen, first-hand, the difference in students’ lives these monies make,” states Susan Gilliland, IWPC Treasurer. ace it. A deteriorating driveway is an eyesore. It’s a bad reflection of you and your neighborhood. If you live in Oklahoma long enough, the odds are that one day your drive is going to be in need of a makeover. Between the freezing snow and ice that our winters generally deliver and the corrosive effects of products used to melt ice from our frozen paths of travel, your driveway is eventually going to start showing

negative signs of age, corrosion and other influences. Kalan Paul and LCI Concrete specialize in the replacement of concrete driveways that have, for one reason or another, a case of the “uglies”. “We use only the finest and strengthening materials available for any project we do,” said Kalan. “When only the best materials are used in properly preparing the ground through the laying and curing of the concrete, we expect the finished product to serve you well for at least 30-40 years.” LCI performs their trade throughout northeastern Oklahoma communities including Tulsa, Bixby, Broken Arrow, Collinsville, Jenks and Owasso. LCI’s ultimate goal is a satisfied customer and outstanding workmanship in each job they tackle. It’s always good to deal with companies you know or those who have been in business in our area for at least a year. Don’t be duped by an imposter claiming to be in the home-improvement business. Ask for credentials and references before you commit. Any reputable business will be able to provide you with proof that they are a member in good standing with the Better Business Bureau. If you have any doubts, call the BBB and/or check records to see if any complaints have been lodged against the person or company with which you are negotiating. It’s also important

to ask for references for projects the company has done that were similar to yours. Call the home or business owners and then visit the properties to see some finished projects. LCI Concrete has served the Tulsa Metro area for over 12 years and they have a list of more than 100 driveways available for your viewing. “Steel rebar is critical for strengthening concrete work,” says Kalan. “Make sure it is part of the fabrication process and

specified in the total cost estimate before you sign a contract.” Replacing a tired, unsightly driveway is not inexpensive. But, with its life expectancy when done professionally, it can be a great investment adding value to your home or business. Call LCI concrete today for your estimate.

on’t wait for a criminal to steal your identity before you take action. Guard your ID with these preventative measures.

Monitor bank account and credit card statements regularly. Lookout for suspicious or unauthorized activity. “Watch closely for small amounts on your account activity,” said Assistant Vice President Fraud Denise Meyer, RCB Bank. “Fraudsters will make little purchases or withdrawals with various odd merchant names hoping you won’t notice.” Set up text alerts to notify you whenever a transaction occurs on your bank or credit card accounts.

Check your free credit reports. Federal law allows you to request a free copy of your credit report once a year from each of the three national credit reporting companies (CRC). Request a copy online at www.annualcreditreport.com or call 1.877.322.8228. Space out requests throughout the year to provide regular updates on your credit. See who is making inquiries on your credit. If it’s not a person or company you gave permission to, your information may be compromised.

Place a fraud alert/credit freeze with CRC. When you have an alert on your report, a business must verify your identity before it issues credit, so it may try to contact you, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Place a fraud alert at no cost with one CRC. They will then notify the other two. The alert lasts 90 days and can be renewed. You can go a step further and lock down your credit with a credit freeze, which restricts access to your credit report. 38 |

You’ll need to contact each CRC to place a credit freeze. There may be a fee. Credit alerts and freezes may be effective at stopping someone from opening new credit accounts in your name, but it may not prevent the misuse of existing accounts. You still need to monitor all bank, credit card and insurance statements for fraudulent transactions.

Stay Alert “Criminals take advantage of data breaches, natural disasters or other major crises and pray on people’s fears,” said Meyer. Watch out for phishing emails pretending to be a government agency or credit reporting service.

UPDATES BY DANA PUGH

H

ave you been putting off a kitchen update because it will take too much time and energy? It won’t – if you call Tracy Booth, owner of Gleam Guard. “Many people have the concept that all wood refinishing is messy and that remodelers always take longer,” he says. “With Gleam Guard,” Tracy explains, “you can refinish woodwork without much sanding and toxic fumes, and still make it look like new.” The average kitchen cabinet project takes one day to complete. Larger kitchens may require part of a second day. However, the only thing you need to do to prepare for the Gleam Guard team is open your door and let them into your kitchen. “In other words, there is no need to empty your cabinets, remove cabinet hardware, cover your furniture or anything else – we take care of it all,” said Tracy. This breakthrough technology restores lasting beauty to cabinets and other interior woodwork without dust, mess or toxic fumes. The process bonds to the original finish, enhancing the wood grain and giving it a fresh-oiled look. But unlike oiled methods, the results last decades – not days or weeks. This process works not only on traditional wood surfaces, but on painted, glazed and pickled woods.

Gleam Guard can be used on old or new cabinets. Keeping the finish new is as easy as wiping with a damp cloth. A bit of white vinegar is all you need for stubborn spots. Another common problem he solves is the finishing touches after new granite countertops have been installed. There is usually about a half-inch of unstained wood that old countertops covered, but new granite slabs do not. Gleam Guard can put a beautiful finish on this wood and allow it to blend with the rest of your cabinets. During his three decades in business, Tracy has heard a lot of positive comments about his work, such as this one: “My cabinets are 32 years old. After Gleam Guard, I use nothing but

water to clean them, and they look beautiful.” The cost is very reasonable. Many happy customers say they wish they had the makeover a lot sooner.

In this before and after example, you can see how Gleam Guardʼs fuss- free refinishing service brings these kitchen cabinets back to life.

“Sometimes people think I am going to make everything look really shiny,” says Tracy. “But there are actually three sheens to choose from – satin, semi gloss and high gloss.” You can have a soft look, a strong impact look or in-between. Tracy is happy to show you how your cabinets will look in each Gleam Guard finish. Getting finished on time is another thing you don’t need to worry about with Tracy. You can count on what he says and what he does. With his crew of reliable professional craftsmen, he works on only one project at a time. Tracy’s business integrity and respect for his customers has earned Gleam Guard an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, as well as its prestigious Award for Outstanding Customer Service. Give Tracy a call to ask questions or to schedule an in-home demonstration to see how peels, flakes, scratches and minor nicks can disappear. HALLOWEEN FUN FOR ALL G BY DANA PUGH

et into the spooky spirit of Halloween at the Castle of Muskogee! The festival is better than ever this year, with new haunts ranging from tame to terrifying. The Castle of Muskogee is Oklahoma’s 60-acre Halloween theme park, open from 6-10 p.m. every weekend this fall. With free parking and free admission to the Halloween Village, and the attractions ranging in price from just $3-$15, there’s something fun for everyone at the Castle. There are eleven great Halloween attractions to enjoy, all conveniently rated by scariness using the Castle’s Skull Rating as a guide to choosing haunts. From the family-friendly Halloween Village (0 skulls) for the younger ones to Domus Horrificus (5 skulls) for extreme thrill seekers, everyone is invited to get into the Halloween Spirit at the Castle. This popular event continues to grow every year, and the Castle is making changes to improve the experience. “We have implemented a new ticketing system this year,” said Matt Hiller, owner of the Castle of Muskogee. The system, called QLess, uses your phone number and alerts you by text message when your turn is coming up. “This way, you can get out and see everything going on at the

festival instead of standing in line,” he added. This is great news, because there’s more to see at the Castle than ever! If you’re looking for a bone-chilling scare, face the menacing creatures along the Trail of Blood or join in on the action on the Dark Tower Zombie Hunt, where it’s up to you to clear the area of Zombies and rescue survivors. If you’re into Halloween but not the accompanying nightmares, try the Haunted Hayride for some eerie excitement. There’s also plenty to do with absolutely no scares, so the kids can join in on the fun at any age. “Here at the Castle, you can bring the entire family,” says Hiller. “The teenagers can go and do the Trail of Blood, the younger kids can ride the train and then everyone can do the Haunted Hayride or the Maze together.” The Castle’s Halloween Village also features live entertainment on the Chessboard Stage with the comedy of the Jester Rejects and Mark Logsdon, Escapologist. New this year is David Smith, the Hypnotist, and Topsy Turvy Acrobats. If you’re looking for an amazing Halloween adventure, gather family and friends and hop on the Muskogee Turnpike – it’s only a short drive from Tulsa.
