Save the date for this 3-day, one-stop holiday shopping extravaganza on December 7-9, 2018. In it’s 13th year, the JLT Holiday Market is a delightful tradition for many, thoughtfully designed to provide holiday magic for everyone! For the gift shopper, there will be over 100 vendors offering a market experience unlike any other. Boutique women’s fashion, unique kid’s items, and even a men’s gallery are just some of the distinctive offerings to be found. The Maker’s Market will provide a sleigh full of gift options, including Made in Oklahoma (MIO) merchandise. No holiday market would be complete without some edible treats, and there will be plenty of gourmet food choices for gifts, or to nibble while you shop. Not to be missed, kids both young and old will have a chance to enjoy “Cookies with the Clauses.” Cookies from Cookie Doodle will be available for purchase, along with lots of toppings for decorating. Come camera ready, as little kids, big kids, or whole families can have a digital picture made with the Clauses! What a great opportunity to capture that holiday card photo! Proceeds from Holiday Market go towards funding community projects that work to end the cycle of poverty in women and children in Tulsa. entire family. Entering its 40th year, you’ll enjoy große (huge) quantities of bratwurst, German beers, Bavarian cheesecake, great music and thousands of your friends together at one place at the new River West Festival Park with 116,000 square feet of new tents, stages and more. Named a 2017, Top Five Oktoberfest as ranked by USA Today and as well as by Condé Nast Traveler Magazine, Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa has just been named by Orbitz as one of the five
Largest Oktoberfests in America! When it comes to food, Linde Oktoberfest has something for everyone. Get ready for some authentic German heritage, and mouthwatering dishes brought to you by our dedicated chefs, volunteers, restaurants and specialty shops. Bratwurst, Turkey Legs, Sausage, Sauerkraut, Potato Salad, Warm Pretzels, Pizza, tons of delicious sweet treats, and much more! For kids, we also have a variety of festival staples—from pizza, to
french fries, corn dogs, gyros, frozen custard and funnel cakes. Tulsa’s favorite festival wouldn’t be the same without our terrific entertainers! Live music is always a favorite and this year, several bands are traveling to Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa from Germany to perform, including Dorfrocker and Münchner Gaudiblosn, Alex Meixner will be joining us, and the popular das Glockenspiel® presented by Williams will be returning! New this year is the Bavarian Cup Team Challenge! Get your team of 8 together and join us as the Karbach Games and Competitions Arena becomes our own center of the universe Saturday at 2:00 PM for true fans of German bier. Why? Because it is ground zero for the
Linde Oktoberfest Bavarian Cup (Bayerische Tasse) Team Challenge, a challenge for the ages. Teams of 8, each with a minimum of four women, will compete for the first ever Goldenes Fass (Golden Barrel) Award, to display proudly in a lobby, break room or cubicle. The competition consists of four intense but fun games - the legendary Bier Barrel Race, the MassKrug Relay, the Strong Stein Hoist and the Das Tauziehen (Tug o’ War)! There will be non-stop action and everyone will chicken dance because it will be so much fun.

The Fall Home Expo: Resources For Everything Home BY FRANK SAWYER
C
elebrating its 5th anniversary as the only fall season home and garden show in the Tulsa market, the timing could not be better on its new earlier weekend. The new schedule will allow visitors to enjoy ample parking adjacent to the Exchange Center which was not always the case in previous years. The show will feature hundreds of booths with a mix of both local exhibitors and companies from around North America. This expo will help you connect with experts in a broad range of fields including: kitchens and baths, outdoor living, energy savings and home technology to name a few. With over 40 major business categories represented, this event will certainly prove helpful to your immediate needs before the end of the year

as well as pre-planning spring projects around the house. The show also features a variety of personal products and services, gift ideas, and family-oriented fun for all ages. The 2018 Fall Home Expo, a Tulsa Home Shows production, will come two weeks earlier than in past years opening at noon on Friday, November 2nd through 5pm on Sunday, November 4th. It is located in the Exchange Center at Expo Square on the Tulsa Fairgrounds. The show is sponsored by Engineered Concrete Systems, local experts in new and replacement concrete projects, with special thanks to Values Magazine again this year.
Other show sponsors include Stone Canyon in Owasso and AT&T. Admission and parking are both free and there will be a $500 daily Visa gift card giveaway. Folks entering the giveaway will receive a valuable free gift just for entering, while supplies last. Fall Home Expo brings all this plus much more to you and your family. Additional show features include: • American Red Cross Blood Drive on Friday and Saturday. • A 600 square-foot operating display of garden train installed by the Tulsa Garden Railroad Club • The Rescue Roundup
• The Little Light House book fair fundraiser supported by Usborne Books & More • More to be announced on FallHomeExpo.com prior to show time. The American Red Cross is in dire need of donations. If you, or anyone within your circle of influence is a current donor or would like to start donating, your gift of life would be extremely welcome. Donations are best made by appointment to allow matching of donation staffing levels and supplies. Walk-ins are accepted as the schedule allows. Your appointment can be set now on RedCrossBlood.org or with your RapidPass app if you are already a regular donor. A well kept secret in our city is the love of trains and the ability to demonstrate that love in a big way in your own backyard. The Tulsa Garden Railroad Club will be operating a large display of garden trains for the first time ever in a Tulsa Home Shows event. This is a great time to bring the entire
family and enjoy seeing the trains in action, ask questions and maybe elevate your interest in a fun new hobby. Remember, Christmas is only a few weeks after the event and trains can bring out the kid in all of us. Club members will be operating the trains and available to answer all questions about the hobby and club membership. Rescue Roundup is a unique gathering of several of the Tulsa area’s top dog adoption groups. The goal of the Rescue Roundup is to find forever homes for as many dogs as possible. Come see and pet dozens of dogs and puppies looking for their new families. This special feature is made possible by Angel’s Pet Funeral Home and Crematory. The Little Light House book fair will help provide quality books to the students at Tulsa’s largest and oldest privately-funded school for special needs children. Last year the event was able to provide over $600 in new books for the children. This year’s goal is to break the $1,000 mark with your help. All sales will generate
a 50% matching donation from Usborne Books and direct donations are also accepted. Plan now to attend by visiting FallHomeExpo.com. On the website, you can preview the list of exhibitors and sponsors. You can also register to receive additional show information including notices about contests, prizes and any yetto-be-announced show features as well as other upcoming shows and special offers. Admission to Fall Home Expo is free and parking is free. This enables you to bring the entire family along with friends if you wish. You can enter and re-enter as many times as you like over the weekend without ticketing expenses or having your hand stamped.

Ways You Can Save at Closing By Alex Penny, RCB Bank Mortgage
Did you know closing costs vary between lenders? If you want to save the most money on your closing costs, it pays to shop around. Here's why.
Interest rates are restricted by market conditions. Your options are limited. Buyers often shop interest rates, choosing the lowest rate possible to help their overall savings over the life of the loan. Yet, rates change daily, sometimes more than once per day depending on different economic factors. When comparing lenders’ rates for secondary market financing, all lenders base their rates off the same market trading; therefore, all quotes should be similar, typically within .125 percent, .250 percent at most.
Lender fees vary from lender to lender. You have more options to lower your costs. Lender origination charges, application fees, processing and underwriting fees can vary significantly between lenders. The best way to compare lenders is to request Loan Estimates. Their fees will be listed under Closing Cost Details on page 2, section A.
You can also cut costs by comparing home insurance coverage and premiums. Oftentimes, the largest expense on your Closing Disclosure is home insurance, another expense that varies between companies.
Get$Fit Tip: Compare lender fees for better savings.
Generally, you will need 14 months of home insurance set aside in your escrow account paid at closing. If you choose a policy that charges $1,800 annually versus a $2 ,500 annual policy, you can save $800 at closing.
Know where your money is going. Ask your lender plenty of questions. A good lender can answer all your questions and make you feel comfortable about your spending decisions. Buying a house is one of the most expensive things you will buy. Why spend more than you have to?

HOW TO BE A WINE EXPERT IN 60 MINUTES BY TERESA BOND-MASON
When you’re trying to think of something new to do that’s fun, educational and original, your first thought may not be the liquor store. But, once you step into Riley’s Wine and Spirits, it may very well be the new place on your bucket list for a fun evening out. Though Christopher and Diane Riley are new owners, the store itself has been around for more than 50 years. Both Christopher and Diane are committed to not only keeping the same level of expertise and customer service, but they intend to make the store a destination for all things wine and specialty liquors. The first event, scheduled for November 8 from 5-7 will be a wine tasting and book signing. Former owner, Randa Warren, a master sommelier, will be there to discuss her newest venture, “60-Minute Wine Expert: Taste Wine the Master’s Way”. The book demystifies wine and breaks it down with tasting exercises, humor and a Q&A section for everything you wanted to know about wine, but were too scared to ask. “Wine should not be snobby or intimidating,” explains Randa. “This book is basically everything I have learned about wine through study, tastings and experience.” Besides the book, Randa herself is a draw. She is only one of 249 Master Sommeliers and one of only 25 females with the distinction. Not only that, but she is the only woman with the honor in Oklahoma. Most of her life has been spent as an Oklahoman, but she’s literally traveled the world learning about wine. It was very important when she decided to sell the store to leave it in 22 |

olland Hall will feature the work of local photographer Bob Sober in a unique residency/workshop program at its ARTworks Holliman Gallery Exhibit beginning Monday, Oct. 22 and running through Nov. 20. Sober specializes in macro photography of insects. During his residency, he will collaborate with Holland Hall’s Keri Shingleton and other science teachers and students to explore the 162 acres surrounding the campus to teach them about insects. his camera. Using cutting-edge technology, Bob created humansized images of these natural wonders and presents them on a simple white background, so that they may be clearly seen as nature’s art work. The purpose is to inspire our natural curiosity to explore the almost limitless beauty and diversity of nature. Through recent exhibitions, he noticed that the gap between art and science continues to shrink — his work has been appreciated in both worlds. During his time at Holland Hall, he will explore these connected worlds with students in both art and
science spaces as well as outdoors. “Some will ask, is this science or is this art?” said Sober. “I hope my images will help them recognize that science exists in all art as surely as art exists in all science. This may be that magical place where science and art overlap.” The gallery will feature insects on display along with his art during his residency. The artwork will be available for purchase. On Oct. 27, a Patron Workshop will be offered to adults. The workshop will offer ARTworks patrons one-onone time with Sober and a chance to learn photography techniques and

One hundred years ago, Will Rogers life took a new turn. After a time in Wild West shows and on stage, he was welcomed to the “ big screen” and starred in his first movie. In late 1918 he debuted his movie career in “Laughing Bill Hyde,” which was the start of a career that propelled him into one of the nation’s wealthiest and most popular movie actors at the time of his death Aug. 15, 1935 in an Alaska plane crash. Will Rogers Birthday Bash Nov. 1-4 continues the year of events that have paid tribute to his movie career and his Nov. 4, 1879 birth on an Indian Territory Ranch. The focus will continue to create a movie atmosphere in Claremore with memories of individual favorite movies, according to Tad Jones, Will Rogers Memorial Museum executive director. Michael Wallis, voice of the Sheriff in Pixar movie “Cars” will be parade marshal for the 3 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2 parade. A Tulsa author and wellknown biographer of Route 66, he has earned many honors as a writer and historian. Oklahoman Gray Frederickson, Oscar winning producer for “The
Godfather – Part II,” and involved in all three “Godfather” films and “Apocalypse Now” will be a special guest. An Oklahoman, he is currently on the staff of Oklahoma City Community College. The public can join him for a discussion of movies he produced on Nov. 2 from noon-1pm Businesses and individuals, including school children, are encouraged to dress as a favorite movie character for the celebration, decorate windows and participate in the parade followed by a birthday party at the Claremore Museum of History and Gazebo Park. Prizes will be awarded for best movie theme for dress, window and business décor and parade floats. The birthday weekend begins on Nov. 1 with the annual Kids Day at the Memorial Museum with special appearances by Cherokee Storyteller Robert Lewis and Magician Doug Anderson. Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club will honor Will in their time-old tradition started 80 years ago when the Museum opened. A Nov. 3, 10 a.m. program and ceremony at the statue of Will in
the Museum rotunda and placing a wreath at the family tomb, will be followed by a formal reception a the Museum, according to Ollie Starr, longtime member. A Mid-Afternoon Frolic Talent Show, patterned after Will’s afternoon performances on the New York stage will be Nov. 3, 10 a.m. in the Museum Theatre (ages 5-18). Dia De Festival en Baja Fundraiser Benefits RSU Public TV BY TOM FINK
R
SU Public TV will be hosting one of its more internationally-inspired events this fall with Dia De Festival en Baja. The event, which includes an evening of dinner, relationshipbuilding, and public television celebrities, marks a comeback of sorts for the fundraiser. “A few years ago, we started out doing a dinner fundraiser, primarily as a means to build relationships with corporates whom I could talk to about becoming underwriters on the station,” said Royal Aills, general manager, RSU Public TV. “Because of budgetary reasons, we laid off holding it one year, but I decided to pursue it again this year, and my community advisory board is leading the charge, so we’re hosting it again this year.” Dia De Festival en Baja will be held at the Tulsa Country Club and, as implied by the name, will have a distinctly Mexican flavor. “In previous years, our special guest at these fundraisers was Nick Stellino, whose cooking program has appeared on our station, and as such, the dinner served was primarily Italian food,” Aills said, “but this year’s special guest will be awardwinning chef Pati Jinich, creator of ‘Pati’s Mexican Table’, a series which brings authentic Mexican flavors, colors, textures and warmth into American kitchens. “’Pati is very well-liked across the U.S., and we wanted to bring her in to showcase her and what she does with her program,” he continued. “I think people who enjoy her show will obviously enjoy her company, and those who don’t know about her yet, will get to meet her and learn about another personality on public television.”
Rounding out the VIP names at the event will be Rogers State University President Dr. Larry Rice and his wife Peggy, making the evening one of fun, food, and fundraising for public television. “Our goal is of course to get as many people to come to the dinner/ fundraiser as possible so that we can build relationships with them – with individuals and the corporates with whom we don’t already have relationships, and to say thank you to those relationships we have, and to those individuals who love RSU Public TV,” he said. Aills said corporate tables and individual tables are still available, and he’s hopeful that this year’s event will be the biggest yet. “We’ve done two of these before now, those were the ones with Nick (Stellino),” he said. “Each year exceeded our expectations in terms of attendance – it was fantastic. We’d like to see that same kind of exceeded expectations again this year.” As the only full-powered public television station licensed to a university in Oklahoma, RSU Public TV provides educational, cultural and general interest programming to an audience of 1.2 million viewers in northeast Oklahoma and the Tulsa Metro area. RSU Public TV also produces original programs, such as “Living Grand on Grand Lake” and game show “I Want Answers,” which features area high school students. “We operate on a budget of $1.2 million, which is a relatively small budge in the public television worlds – I think we’re one of the smallest (budgets) out there, but we’re able to do a lot with it, and we get a tremendous amount of positive feedback from our local content,” he said. Fundraisers such as the upcoming
Dia De Festival en Baja area also part of what helps keep public television stations such as RSU Public TV on the air and able to pay for equipment and important upgrades, such as the station’s recently-purchased new transmitter and antenna. “Not to brag, but we out-produce stations in larger markets in terms of content because we work harder at building local content,” he said. “We’re all about northeast Oklahoma – that’s our mantra, and these fundraisers, particularly this one, are important because it’s all about community engagement. Our goal is to get corporates and national foundations engaged with us, as well as engaged with the university. “And of course, Dia De Festival en Baja is our way of thanking our supporters – thanking our supporters individually, thanking our supporters corporately – this is who we are, and this is what we’re about,” he said. “I’ve been the general manager at RSU Public TV for five years now, and I love this place. There’s a lot going on at this little station.
