Home Fire Prevention Take steps now to help prevent dangerous home fires.
O
ctober, 2021: Get ready for cooler temperatures and a cozy home by first getting your chimney and dryer vent cleaned. Debris like birds’ nests and leaves, and creosote could be lingering as potential fire hazards in your chimney. As for your dryer vent, lint doesn’t just accumulate in your lint trap; it can also build up in your dryer vents. As most of us know, this lint is extremely flammable; it is the build-up of this lint that can lead to dryer fires. So before you light that first log, be sure you won’t be sparking a chimney fire. Approximately 23,000 chimney fires occur every year, causing nearly a billion dollars in damage, and potentially the loss of lives. Having your chimney professionally cleaned annually will help you avoid a disaster. You can prevent a chimney fire with three easy steps: • Have your chimney professionally inspected and cleaned. At the beginning of the heating season, hire a chimney inspector to examine your chimney—specifically, the chimney liner and ventilation. The chimney inspector will check for creosote build-up, cracks, and leaks, and make sure the vent is in good working order. A good chimney sweep thoroughly cleans the chimney, flue, and vents. • Use the right wood. Not all woods burn the same. Seasoned Left: For over 44 years, Black Hat Cleaning Services owner David Harris, Sr. has been serving N.E. Oklahoma.

with a standard recommendation of professional sweep every 3 to 4 ricks of wood burned. Gas burning fireplaces only need to be cleaned every 15 to 20 years. “If you’re not sure if your chimney needs cleaning, at least have it inspected,” David said. “If you’ve never had it cleaned, clean it!” Dryer duct cleaning is sometimes overlooked by homeowners but should be a top priority regarding fire safety. Many home fires are caused every year by the lint that gets trapped within the pipes and, once ignited, can quickly burn throughout a home. “Dryer lint is the best thing you can use to start a campfire,” said David. “It is highly flammable. You don’t want that trapped in your dryer vent as a fire hazard.” David’s sound advice for homeowners is only a small part of the comprehensive service provided by Black Hat. Honesty and integrity are at the forefront of his business practice and what his customers see when they see him in his top hat. “My customers know that they can trust Black Hat Cleaning to be honest, and take care of them, give them peace of mind.” Over the years, just as David’s hat has gotten taller, the services have evolved to become more efficient, time-saving, and thorough. Chimney cleaning can take up to 45 minutes. David loves his work and the people he serves. “This is my 44th year in business with many more years ahead.”

“The day will be starting at the Will Rogers Memorial Museum, at which we’ll have our regular wreath laying ceremony at 10 a.m. – just like we’ve done since 1944,” Starr said. “After that, we’ll go into the (Will Rogers Theatre) auditorium, where we will have a special guest speaker, Kim Teehee.” A citizen of the Cherokee Nation, Teehee is director of Government Relations for the Cherokee Nation and senior vice president of Government Relations Cherokee Nation Businesses.
Wear a Fancy Hat!
Following this will be a musical tribute by the first lady of the country fiddle, Jana Jae, as well as the Haute Hat Contest in remembrance of Will’s wife, Betty Blake Rogers. Attendees are encouraged to join in the fun or cast their ballot. Betty was wellknown for always wearing her Haute Hat. New to the festivities this year, Starr said, will be the inclusion of a trolley, furnished by the City of Claremore.

On to the Claremore Museum of History
“From there, we’ll leave that afternoon – again by trolley-- and go to tour the Claremore Museum of History (MoH), where we’ll have seven Native artists on display, courtesy of the Route 66 Native Arts Alliance. If you and your partner decide you need a more permanent approach to birth control, there are a number of questions to ask before a vasectomy. After getting all of your questions answered, you and your partner can work together to come to a decision. While this article is a starting point, don’t be afraid to ask any other questions you have during our consultation. As your doctor, I am prepared to help you understand your vasectomy and will be able to provide all the answers you may have. 1.Why is shaving the night before a vasectomy beneficial? When someone shaves the razor causes small abrasions or even very small puncture wounds over the area that is shaved. These small injuries heal over the next few hours. How long it depends on how deep or large the wound is that has occurred. Normally since these are very small unless someone cuts himself when he is shaving a few hours is all that is required. So as a minimum shaving should occur at least 12 hours before the vasectomy is performed. This would keep down the incidence of infections. Although there are no studies it is probably true that shaving
should occur at least one and maybe even two days before the vasectomy. The hair growth that would occur over that time would be insignificant but the benefit in diminishing skin injuries and subsequent infection would be great. 2. Will my ability to have an erection following vasectomy change? There should be no change in a man’s ability to achieve an erection following a vasectomy. The mechanism for trapping blood in a man’s phallus is completely separate in location from the vasectomy site. as well as from where a vasectomy occurs. Also, it is common to believe that testosterone may have something to do with erections, but it
Right: Dr. Thomas Rickner specializes solely on vasectomies and has performed well over 1,000 procedures. 20 |
VALUE NEWS TULSA OCTOBER 2021 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM
actually does not. Libido is dependent on testosterone but that is by a different mechanism and only indirectly effects erections. A vasectomy does not change either the blood supply to the phallus or testosterone levels. 3. What is a no scalpel vasectomy? In 1989 the no scalpel technique came from China to New York City and subsequently spread across the country. No scalpel is used to make an incision. Rather a very pointed instrument is used to precisely puncture the skin directly over the vas deferens (the tube carrying sperm). This puncture site is subsequently spread wider so the Vas can be brought to the surface and
transected. The Vas is then transected and occluded. The occluded ends of the Vas are allowed to retract. This small puncture wound then contracts and no suture is even required. The small puncture wound heals itself in 24 to 48 hours with no suture needed. This small opening has also helped cut down on wound infections. 4. How to use ice correctly. The coldness produced by ice is beneficial in many situations because lower temperatures result in contraction of blood vessels. Therefore, bleeding is minimized using ice. However, ice cannot be placed directly on the skin or else there will be complete loss of blood supply to that area involved. That skin will die if the ice is left in direct contact for too long a period. So, first, never place ice directly on your skin. Rather ice should be inside some form of a protective covering. Secondly, ice should be used for around 20 minutes at a time and no more frequently than every two hours. This should continue for somewhere between 1 to two days following a vasectomy. Thirdly, considering the advances indicated above where the dissection is much less than before, ice is not needed for as long a period of time. In days gone by ice was used intermittently for 3 to five days. Now usually 2 to three days is sufficient if accompanied with activity restrictions. 5. What is a painless vasectomy?
Above: The office is comfortably decorated as a club house, man cave and sportsman’s paradise. Right: Kids also have a space to play with games and toys.
How can a vasectomy be painless? Well, it is actually not totally painless but almost. Although it seems a contradiction the higher the number the smaller the size of a needle. Technology has now advanced and whereas needles of 23 and 25 have been used for some time, needles are now being manufactured that are 33 and even 35-gauge (out of South Korea at first). However, those are so small that not enough of the anesthetic can be administered, even though those needles usually cannot be felt hen used. The newer alternative is not to use needles at all. Rather we now can use a spring-loaded injector that creates a high-pressure spray. This spray penetrates the skin with no evidence of entry at all. This technique creates instantaneous anesthesia in area of the spray. During a vasectomy 2 to 3 sprays are required on each side. The first 1 on each side may have some discomfort but subsequently are not felt at all. Most men say that the first spray feels about like
having a rubber band snapped against your skin. A further advantage of this technique is that the volume of anesthetic that is administered is extremely small compared to old volumes with the use of needles. Consequently, side effects of anesthetic administration are almost eliminated. Now there are many other questions that could be asked and these will be supplied when you visit our office before your vasectomy. We encourage you to bring your questions with you as well. At Tulsa Vasectomy Clinic, vasectomy procedures are done inoffice and will usually take about 20 to 30 minutes. Your time is important to us. You can schedule your consultation and vasectomy for the same day or on separate dates.

Cabinet Refinishing for a Lustrous Glow
O
ctober, 2021: Fall is on its way and with the cooler weather coming in; you can finally get to your home renovation list before the holidays, starting with your cabinets. While cabinets’ purpose is functional, they remain a focal point of the home. Whether your cabinets are peeling, greasy
or even in bad condition, Gleam Guard Wood Refinishing can remedy your woodwork and make it look like new again using eco-friendly and odorless materials with a 5-year guarantee to top it off! They are an A+ Rated BBB Accredited company and offer reasonably priced and highly effective solutions
for restoring and refinishing your cabinetry and woodwork. “We can refinish cabinets that are in really bad shape. We can also clean your cabinets and give them a new, permanent finish,” says owner Tracy Booth. “The Gleam Guard finishes are available in matte, shiny and satin. When we apply our Gleam Guard system, it bonds to the original finish and makes the surface smooth and dry. The process remarkably enhances wood grain and keeps it looking oiled and polished. Old imperfections cannot be seen. This is an ultra low odor process; it is completely safe for even those with serious breathing problems to be in the house.” The entire messfree Gleam Guard process takes only one to two days to complete, so your kitchen can be transformed in time for the holidays. Whole house projects, which include kitchen and bath cabinets, baseboards, doors, moldings, paneling and just about any other vertical wood surface, can be done in three to five days. Tracy’s son, Phillip Booth, manages their Tulsa Metro office along with Jonathan. Phillip and his professional craftsmen are continuing the legacy that Tracy started over 30 years ago. They have perfected their skill, timing and attention to detail. Left: Phillip and Jonathan enjoy making cabinetry look-like new again.

Their process begins by preparing the surfaces with a thorough cleaning to remove dirt and debris and making any reparation of damaged areas. Damaged areas are treated with custom-matched stain blends. Lastly, the cabinets are protected with a coating that will keep cabinetry and woodwork looking fresh for decades. A special over-glazing is used when you want to change the color of the wood. Dust-free and non-toxic, the process works on traditional wood surfaces, along with those which are painted, glazed and pickled. A real big plus is that you don’t have to empty cabinets or remove hardware prior to the process. Each job comes with a free 5-year touch up warranty. “We have customers we served over 20 years ago who say their cabinets still

look great even today. It is because of our hometown people in the greater Tulsa area that we were able to expand and help families across the country beautify their homes, including Kansas City, Branson, Northwest Washington and Canada,” he says. The Gleam Guard crew will be in and out, without interruptions or breakaways. Their work area, when finished, will look like no one was there. Aftercare is as simple as wiping with a damp cloth. Tracy says when people see the difference Gleam Guard has made in friend’s or relative’s homes, they are quite often sold on the process! Even those considering new cabinets or refacing old cabinets frequently decide on Gleam Guard Wood Refinishing instead. It’s the sensible solution that makes a big difference. Gleam Guard often costs clients 70 percent less when compared to other options. “I love to show people how they can save money and still have beautiful wood finishes that look like new,” says Tracy. To complete the makeover, the team can also deep clean rock and stone interior surfaces. LIFE Senior Services Expands Medicare Assistance Program BY LAUREN ZELIGSON
O
ctober, 2021: The Medicare Open Enrollment Period opens Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7, and the Medicare Assistance Program (MAP) at LIFE Senior Services is ready. MAP has been modified and expanded in response to COVID-19, offering additional health precautions and more convenient appointment options for Medicare beneficiaries. Besides the traditional face-to-face Part D appointments, MAP has increased its capacity for telephone appointments as well as offering appointments via Zoom. Additionally, MAP on the MOVE is continuing to offer their four additional clinics in midtown and north Tulsa, Broken Arrow and Owasso, to augment the original clinic at LIFE Senior Services’ central office at 5950 East 31st Street. Masks are required for all face-to-face appointments and social distancing guidelines are being followed. According to LIFE President and CEO
Eileen Bradshaw, “We are happy to offer our traditional MAP clinic near 31st and Sheridan, and it remains the heart of the program. We are also excited at the success of MAP on the MOVE, which takes this assistance to locations throughout the community. It alleviates transportation barriers and allows people to get this help close to home. It is vital that all seniors double-check their part D coverage each year, and we want to make sure we make the process as accessible and safe as we can.” MAP’s Part D Clinics offer free, personalized and unbiased help in comparing, selecting and enrolling in a Part D plan. According to Kathy Jones, supervisor of MAP at LIFE, “Using the Medicare website, we work one-on-one with beneficiaries, helping them find the Part D plan that best fits their individual prescription and budget needs. We can help ensure that they are getting the best coverage for their money.” “Even if beneficiaries have been satisfied with their current Part D plan, the changes

each year in plan premiums, co-pays, deductibles and drug formularies make it critically important for beneficiaries to take a fresh look at their coverage options for 2021,” Jones says. Unfortunately, most beneficiaries don’t take time to review their drug coverage – and many will pay significantly more than necessary next year becaus¬e they are tied to a plan that no longer fits their specific prescription needs. Last year, more LIFE helped save over $1.6 million on 2021 medications. Appointments for Part D assistance are required and can be made by calling MAP at LIFE Senior Services at (918) 664-9000, ext. 1189.

Why is STORYTELLING important to your business? 1.
Stories create purpose and drive action. Stories give the audience purpose and a motive to take action. Storytelling conveys purpose, and businesses with purpose are noticed and win the loyalty of consumers.
2. Using storytelling in your business is the single greatest tool you have to win over others. A well-told story can move people to take action or even further your career. With one story, your audience can tell what you value, the customs you engage in, and how knowledgeable you are on a subject. 3. Nothing inspires like a story. People have been captivated by stories since the beginning of time, so it makes sense that brands have started to use storytelling in their marketing efforts with great success. Every company has a story to tell, and if your business can’t properly convey its story, your products likely won’t have as much appeal to your audience. 4. The art of storytelling in business can help forge the identity of your company, create brand awareness, and help people understand it as more than just a seller of products and services, but as a personal adventure that other people can relate to.
