f you are thinking about a career change but are not sure what you’d like to do, Dental Careers of Tulsa is here to help you find your path to success. They have been training dental professionals for nearly two decades and they will help you obtain the skills you need to become a dental assistant. “Dental Careers of Tulsa has optimized quality programs,” said Program Administrator Norma Tyler. With small class sizes (just 8 students at a time) and affordable programs, you’ll be on track to begin a new career in just a few months’ time. “Since 1998, we have been training students to not only be the best at what they do, but also to care for their patients,” she added. “Dental assistant training is so much more than setting up a tray.” Training session topics include a general introduction to dentistry, X-ray training, infection control, anatomy, instruments and equipment of dentistry, oral surgery, and office management. With this dental assisting course, graduates should have both the confidence and skills required to apply for these positions. “Students are typically ready to work immediately upon finishing the program,” said Norma. Dental Assisting is a solid and fulfilling career choice. As a dental assistant, you will learn to help care for patients and educate them about their oral health. The curriculum is experience-based, so you won’t be struggling to learn about procedures solely from a book. You’ll dive right in, observing and able to ask questions as they come up. The hands-on

atmosphere gives you an edge when it comes to recalling the material, so you’ll be learning faster and retaining more than you might be while attending programs that are rooted in traditional lectures and textbook study. The program also comes with builtin experience, which is required for most positions and it can be difficult to obtain. “Our students complete a 40-hour internship, allowing them to have handson training in their field of interest,” said Norma. They even offer professional guidance, teaching you the ins and outs of applying to positions in this field so you will be set up for success from the start. The unique curriculum at Dental Careers of Tulsa gives working adults the ability to change their careers on their own time. They offer evening and weekend courses that allow students to continue working during the training period of 10-14 weeks. If you are considering a career in the health or medical field, attending Dental Careers of Tulsa in Sapulpa is one of the fastest ways to go from just thinking about a change to landing a brand new career as a dental professional. Classes begin in the spring, summer and fall. Don’t delay! Call Dental Careers of Tulsa to enroll or for more information about their programs.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF SERVING OKLAHOMA’S BOYS
Tulsa Boys’ Home Centennial Celebration BY MACY GOODNIGHT
O
ne of the greatest treasures in Oklahoma is celebrating 100 years of healing and hope for more than 13,000 Oklahoma boys. The Tulsa Boys’ Home opened its doors on August 28, 1918 to fill the need for housing of young homeless boys living on the streets of downtown Tulsa. The foundation that housed the boys in the beginning was a two-story white house where the Bernsen Community Life Center is now located at 710 S. Boston. Three of the five boys that first lived at the home were found living in cardboard boxes in downtown Tulsa, a city that was growing faster than its social services could handle during the oil boom of the early 1900’s. The Tulsa Boys’ Home moved several times because of the need for growth and expansion and settled into its current location on a 160acre ranch in Sand Springs in 1979. The Tulsa Boys’ Home was the first and remains the largest residential treatment facility serving troubled boys in Oklahoma. Today, the home cares for 64 boys, ranging in age
from 11-18. Gregg Conway proudly leads as Executive Director of The Tulsa Boys’ Home, since 1997. Mr. Conway honors the tradition of the Boys’ Home, and those who came before. “For our 100th anniversary, we celebrate all the efforts of board members, staff, volunteers, and donors who have come before us. That’s whose shoulders we stand on now. That’s the foundation that we’ve built on and continue to build on,” said Mr. Conway. The newest initiative of the Boys’ Home is the Hope Tours, with a goal of community awareness. Hope Tours are scheduled on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. “The Tulsa Boys’ Home has always been one of the crown jewels of Tulsa historically, and our current facility was made possible by the generosity of the Tulsa community,” said Mr. Conway. “We encourage the public to come and see it during one of our tours.” Special tours may also be coordinated in advance for groups that cannot make the scheduled times.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Tulsa Boys’ Home, a Centennial Homecoming Event is scheduled for October 14, 2018, from 1pm-6pm, at their extraordinary facility at 2727 S. 137th West Avenue in Sand Springs. Activities will include a meet and greet with former residents, staff, board members, and volunteers. Visitors will also enjoy tours of the campus, equine demonstrations, food trucks, fun and games, and more! Event chairs, Mieke Epps and Frank Rhoades have dedicated many leadership hours to ensure the Centennial Celebration is a success, as well as a festive and prosperous milestone for The Boys’ Home. Regarding the celebration, Mr. Conway added “We are so grateful for the immense support we receive, and have always received, from the Tulsa community; that’s what makes it all work. This is what we are celebrating.”

Get$Fit Tip: Sweat the Small Stuff. There is a saying that wisdom comes from listening to advice, so I asked bankers to share the best money advice they have received and the impact it has made in their lives.
No. 1: Pay attention to your small expenses. “Spend more time thinking about $20 decisions rather than $20,000 decisions,” shares Gregg Conklin, RCB Bank lender. “You’ll make $5, $10, $20 decisions daily. These add up. Learn to be wise in how you spend and save $20, so as you build wealth, you’ll be wise in how you spend and save $20,000.” “I received this advice from a man who immigrated to the U.S. from Holland in the 1950s,” Conklin says. “He left Holland with $20 in his pocket and taught himself English by watching Saturday matinees. He eventually owned thousands of acres of ranch land, raising cattle in Kansas.”
No. 2: Invest in your future. “Pay your obligations first, invest in your future second, indulge in non-essentials last,” shares Emily 32 |

Dake, RCB Bank loan document specialist. “My grandparents taught me to see money as a tool that could guarantee future comfort. If I buy something, I want to walk away having gained something permanent such as knowledge, an experience or an asset.”
No. 3: Build an emergency fund. “Build up a savings to cover at least three months worth of bills,” says Jessica Hamman, RCB Bank eServices. “After having ER surgery, I was without a paycheck. No savings and no paycheck can quickly put you behind on bills. It took three times as long to get caught up as it did to get behind.”
No. 4: Learn Rule 72. “Rule 72 will help you better understand the power of compounding interest over time,” shares Brad Ward, RCB Bank lender. “Take the number 72 and divide it by the annual rate of interest that your money is earning to determine the number of years it will take for your money to roughly double.”
No. 5: Pay yourself like a bill. “Put money into a savings account directly from your paycheck so you don’t have time to spend it,” says Kim Harrison, RCB Bank loan assistant. “Since I started doing this I have been able to steadily save, and I was able to use part of it to buy my first house this year.”
No: 6: Start young. “Early in my career, I was told about the value of saving now for retirement later,” says Jenna Louderback, vice president, eServices. “Putting that advice to work at a young age has paid off as I have watched my investments grow immensely over the years. Starting as early as possible has put me ahead of the game for my retirement plans.”
Invest in yourself.
Your future self will thank you.

THE OLD TIME THRESHING BEE BY LORRIE WARD
H
istory will come alive in Fairview, Oklahoma on September 28-29. That’s when the Major County Historical Society will host its annual Old Time Threshing Bee, where attendees will get to experience a part of Oklahoma’s farming past that might otherwise have been long forgotten. “We’ve held this event for 33 years,” says Don Vogh, one of the main organizers of the Threshing Bee. “We want people to know our history and where we came from.” The event features living history from several periods in Oklahoma history, but concentrates mainly on farming techniques and machinery from the 1900s to 1930s. One important piece of machinery during

these decades was the threshing machine, which was revolutionary in its time because it mechanically replaced the centuries-old method of manual threshing (or separating grain from the plant by hand). To show the public how these machines work, the Major County Historical Society begins preparing in spring when they plant ten acres of wheat on their 160 acre farm, which they harvest in June, using their vintage International Harvester or John Deere binders. When the wheat is properly bound, they store it in pavilions in anticipation of their annual September Old Time Threshing Bee, where they will show how these amazing threshing machines worked until they were
gradually replaced by the modern day combine after the 1930s. During the Threshing Bee, vintage Red River Threshing Machines will run several times during the day to thresh the stored wheat. After the wheat has been run through these machines, it will be run through a cleaner and bagged for sale. Some of these bags will go to the old flour mill to be ground into flour, while other bags will be offered for sale. Old time threshing machines may be the main attraction at the Threshing Bee, but these machines will be in good company with other vintage pieces from the era— stationary Bessemer engines, old time bailers, belt driven corn shellers, and John Deere and Allis tractors.
There will be demonstrations by blacksmiths, house movers, and anvil shooters, as well as demonstrations of the Oklahoma Land Run and one room schoolhouses. The saw mill on site will run all day both days during the Threshing Bee. On Saturday around noon, “gunfighters” will kick off a parade of vintage tractors and machinery, some of which will be for sale at the event. Organizers of the Old Time Threshing Bee strive to keep everything on display as authentic as possible. They even grow Turkey Red wheat, which is the type of wheat originally brought in by American settlers. Major County Historical Society’s Old Time Threshing Bee is held on their acreage, located a mile east of Fairview on Highway 58A. The Major County Museum , which is dedicated to Major County’s farm community history and highlights the county’s inventors and inventions, is also located on this acreage, is open year round and will welcome visitors of the Old Time
Threshing Bee during the event. “The event is scheduled so that visitors can get a true feel for how farming and farming communities operated in the early 1900s, before the present day type combines took the stage,” says Vogh. “We want to educate everyone about the ways of our past.”
