A Return to Wine and Roses BY STEPHANI FREEMAN

S

eptember, 2021: A Return to Wine and Roses, the Tulsa Garden Center’s long-standing garden party gala event, has been scheduled for Friday evening, Sept. 24 at the ever-gorgeous Linnaeus Teaching Garden in Woodward Park. All proceeds from this fundraising event benefit educational programs and beautification for Tulsa’s favorite midtown oasis. “We really missed hosting this event in 2020,” said Laura Chalus,

Tulsa Garden Center CEO, “so we’re extremely thankful this year to be able to offer our guests a safe, upscale event hosted entirely outdoors.” Mr. and Mrs. Andy Zanovich excitedly agreed to serve as event chairs this year, which is especially poignant since this will be Andy’s

final year as board president. Andy and Cassie live in an adjacent neighborhood to Woodward Park and enjoy spending family time there with their children. Andy’s commitment to Woodward Park began years ago as a Leadership Tulsa board intern, progressing to a

board member, then vice president, and finally president for the past three years. “Leading an organization through these unprecedented times has been quite a challenge, but knowing that Woodward Park’s attendance has increased dramatically since the pandemic began has made it all worthwhile.” The Tulsa Garden Center is a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1950, with a mission to serve as horticultural headquarters with diverse educational opportunities for our community, and to provide exceptional and unique guest

experiences. With a business-led board of directors, the organization’s long-range vision is for the Hellen Woodward Park & Gardens to be a premier public garden which connects all people to nature. “As I’ve been reaching out to restaurants, they are excited that we are back with our premier event again this year,” said Stephani Freeman, Tulsa Garden Center Donor Services Administrator. Besides the exceptional wine and spirits which guests will enjoy, some of Tulsa’s foremost restaurants participating

include The Chalkboard, Justin Thompson Restaurant Group, Euro-Mart, The Vault, Roka Bar, Bravo’s Mexican Grill, KEO and Redrock Canyon Grill. New to Wine and Roses this year is Ms. Andrea Gardner, general manager of Tulsa Hills Wine Cellar. “It is an honor to be the Wine Chair of this year’s A Return to Wine & Roses. This is a historic event which supports beautiful gardens and park space that everyone can enjoy. The success and longevity of this event really speaks to the generosity and community involvement of Tulsans. It is also a wonderful way for us to support local restaurants, wineries, breweries and distilleries by showing off what they have to offer.” Make plans now to purchase your ticket, as there are only a limited number of tickets available. Garden Center Member tickets are $150 and non-member tickets are $175. You may purchase online on our website tulsagardencenter.org/wine-androses or call 918-576-5160 and talk to Stephani.

Frequently Asked Questions About Vasectomy BY THOMAS RICKNER, M.D., UROLOGY

S

eptember, 2021: Is a vasectomy really painless? What do I do about swelling after the procedure? Is it invasive? Does a vasectomy affect my sex life? What should I do before the procedure? Getting a vasectomy is a safe and simple procedure that provides an effective form of birth control without enormous risks. If you and your partner decide you need a more permanent approach to birth control, there are a number of questions to ask before a vasectomy. After getting all of your questions answered, you and your partner can work together to come to a decision. While this article is a starting point, don’t be afraid to ask any other questions you have during our consultation. As your doctor, I am prepared to help you understand your vasectomy and will be able to provide all the answers you may have. 1.Why is shaving the night before a vasectomy beneficial? When someone shaves the razor causes small abrasions or even very small puncture wounds over the area that is shaved. These small injuries heal over the next few hours. How long it depends on how deep or large the wound is that has occurred. Normally since these are very small unless someone cuts himself when he is shaving a few hours is all that is required. So as a minimum shaving should occur at least 12 hours before the vasectomy is performed. This would keep down the incidence of infections. Although there are no studies it is probably true that shaving

should occur at least one and maybe even two days before the vasectomy. The hair growth that would occur over that time would be insignificant but the benefit in diminishing skin injuries and subsequent infection would be great. 2. Will my ability to have an erection following vasectomy change? There should be no change in a man’s ability to achieve an erection following a vasectomy. The mechanism for trapping blood in a man’s phallus is completely separate in location from the vasectomy site. as well as from where a vasectomy occurs. Also, it is common to believe that testosterone may have something to do with erections, but it

Right: Dr. Thomas Rickner specializes solely on vasectomies and has performed well over 1,000 procedures. 20 |

VALUE NEWS TULSA SEPTEMBER 2021 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM

actually does not. Libido is dependent on testosterone but that is by a different mechanism and only indirectly effects erections. A vasectomy does not change either the blood supply to the phallus or testosterone levels. 3. What is a no scalpel vasectomy? In 1989 the no scalpel technique came from China to New York City and subsequently spread across the country. No scalpel is used to make an incision. Rather a very pointed instrument is used to precisely puncture the skin directly over the vas deferens (the tube carrying sperm). This puncture site is subsequently spread wider so the Vas can be brought to the surface and

transected. The Vas is then transected and occluded. The occluded ends of the Vas are allowed to retract. This small puncture wound then contracts and no suture is even required. The small puncture wound heals itself in 24 to 48 hours with no suture needed. This small opening has also helped cut down on wound infections. 4. How to use ice correctly. The coldness produced by ice is beneficial in many situations because lower temperatures result in contraction of blood vessels. Therefore, bleeding is minimized using ice. However, ice cannot be placed directly on the skin or else there will be complete loss of blood supply to that area involved. That skin will die if the ice is left in direct contact for too long a period. So, first, never place ice directly on your skin. Rather ice should be inside some form of a protective covering. Secondly, ice should be used for around 20 minutes at a time and no more frequently than every two hours. This should continue for somewhere between 1 to two days following a vasectomy. Thirdly, considering the advances indicated above where the dissection is much less than before, ice is not needed for as long a period of time. In days gone by ice was used intermittently for 3 to five days. Now usually 2 to three days is sufficient if accompanied with activity restrictions. 5. What is a painless vasectomy?

Above: The office is comfortably decorated as a club house, man cave and sportsman’s paradise. Right: Kids also have a space to play with games and toys.

How can a vasectomy be painless? Well, it is actually not totally painless but almost. Although it seems a contradiction the higher the number the smaller the size of a needle. Technology has now advanced and whereas needles of 23 and 25 have been used for some time, needles are now being manufactured that are 33 and even 35-gauge (out of South Korea at first). However, those are so small that not enough of the anesthetic can be administered, even though those needles usually cannot be felt hen used. The newer alternative is not to use needles at all. Rather we now can use a spring-loaded injector that creates a high-pressure spray. This spray penetrates the skin with no evidence of entry at all. This technique creates instantaneous anesthesia in area of the spray. During a vasectomy 2 to 3 sprays are required on each side. The first 1 on each side may have some discomfort but subsequently are not felt at all. Most men say that the first spray feels about like

having a rubber band snapped against your skin. A further advantage of this technique is that the volume of anesthetic that is administered is extremely small compared to old volumes with the use of needles. Consequently, side effects of anesthetic administration are almost eliminated. Now there are many other questions that could be asked and these will be supplied when you visit our office before your vasectomy. We encourage you to bring your questions with you as well. At Tulsa Vasectomy Clinic, vasectomy procedures are done inoffice and will usually take about 20 to 30 minutes. Your time is important to us. You can schedule your consultation and vasectomy for the same day or on separate dates.

Gleam Guard is an Easy, Affordable Kitchen Upgrade Refinish and renew your cabinets and woodwork with little downtime and at much lower cost than replacement.

S

eptember, 2021: Fall is on its way and with the cooler weather coming in; you can finally get to your home renovation list before the holidays, starting with your cabinets. While cabinets’ purpose is functional, they remain a focal point of the home. Whether your cabinets are peeling, greasy or even

in bad condition, Gleam Guard Wood Refinishing can remedy your woodwork and make it look like new again using eco-friendly and odorless materials with a 5-year guarantee to top it off! They are an A+ Rated BBB Accredited company and offer reasonably priced and highly effective solutions

for restoring and refinishing your cabinetry and woodwork. “We can refinish cabinets that are in really bad shape. We can also clean your cabinets and give them a new, permanent finish,” says owner Tracy Booth. “The Gleam Guard finishes are available in matte, shiny and satin. When we apply our Gleam Guard system, it bonds to the original finish and makes the surface smooth and dry. The process remarkably enhances wood grain and keeps it looking oiled and polished. Old imperfections cannot be seen. This is an ultra low odor process; it is completely safe for even those with serious breathing problems to be in the house.” The entire messfree Gleam Guard process takes only one to two days to complete, so your kitchen can be transformed in time for the holidays. Whole house projects, which include kitchen and bath cabinets, baseboards, doors, moldings, paneling and just about any other vertical wood surface, can be done in three to five days. Tracy’s son, Phillip Booth, manages their Tulsa Metro office along with Jonathan. Phillip and his professional craftsmen are continuing the legacy that Tracy started over 30 years ago. They have perfected their skill, timing and attention to detail. Left: Phillip and Jonathan enjoy making cabinetry look-like new again.

Their process begins by preparing the surfaces with a thorough cleaning to remove dirt and debris and making any reparation of damaged areas. Damaged areas are treated with custom-matched stain blends. Lastly, the cabinets are protected with a coating that will keep cabinetry and woodwork looking fresh for decades. A special over-glazing is used when you want to change the color of the wood. Dust-free and non-toxic, the process works on traditional wood surfaces, along with those which are painted, glazed and pickled. A real big plus is that you don’t have to empty cabinets or remove hardware prior to the process. Each job comes with a free 5-year touch up warranty. “We have customers we served over 20 years ago who say their cabinets still

look great even today. It is because of our hometown people in the greater Tulsa area that we were able to expand and help families across the country beautify their homes, including Kansas City, Branson, Northwest Washington and Canada,” he says. The Gleam Guard crew will be in and out, without interruptions or breakaways. Their work area, when finished, will look like no one was there. Aftercare is as simple as wiping with a damp cloth. Tracy says when people see the difference Gleam Guard has made in friend’s or relative’s homes, they are quite often sold on the process! Even those considering new cabinets or refacing old cabinets frequently decide on Gleam Guard Wood Refinishing instead. It’s the sensible solution that makes a big difference. Gleam Guard often costs clients 70 percent less when compared to other options. “I love to show people how they can save money and still have beautiful wood finishes that look like new,” says Tracy. To complete the makeover, the team can also deep clean rock and stone interior surfaces. A+ Rated Concrete Contractor Meet Kalan Paul, Driveway Specialist, LCI Concrete BY MACY GOODNIGHT

S

eptember 2021: Home improvement is currently trending, and honestly, never goes out of style. However, for obvious reasons, more and more people are increasing their investment of time and money into their sanctuaries, whether for updates, replacements or additions. The first impression of any home is the driveway that leads to the house itself. Add that to the top of the list when making your next improvement investment. One of the most underappreciated parts of a home may very well be the driveway. Incidentally, most people won’t

notice how important this facet really is, until it’s in need of repair. If your driveway is cracked, chipped, stained, or generally in need of renewal, LCI Concrete is your solution. Owner, Kalan Paul, has been in business helping homeowners in Tulsa and surrounding areas alleviate their driveway woes for

over 16 years. “The driveway really is the first impression, and a new one can on average update the look of a home by 20 years,” he said. LCI specializes in driveway concrete replacement for existing and new home builds, and his company has provided over 750 new driveways since 2005. Fully insured, Kalan and his employees have over 70 years of combined experience working with concrete, with full rebar installation. “We always

Oil and other car fluid stains, or peeling and cracks can make the driveway look very unsightly, and can also be a progressive issue that will only get worse over time. Functionality is a priority, as physical hazards such as holes or cracks can wreak havoc on a vehicle and its wheels and tires. Driveway replacement can add to the value of the home and is a good investment. “I don’t think anyone would lose money replacing a driveway,” Kalan said. “It’s amazing what it can do for the look of a home.” LCI takes great pride in the speed at which they are able to complete their work. Removing and replacing 50,000 lbs and

beyond of material requires a great deal of effort! Most homeowners appreciate being able to utilize their driveway as quickly as possible, and they consider this a top priority. “We lead the way as a well-oiled machine,” said Kalan. “In most cases, we show up early, work hard, remove and replace driveways within one day!” Most projects can be completed in one to two days. Their business philosophy focuses on three major points: customer satisfaction, quality workmanship and minimizing a homeowner’s downtime. The quality of work with LCI Concrete speaks for itself, with an A+ rating with the BBB and Angie’s List. “We are the highestrated concrete contractors online,” Kalan said. “That’s a lot to be proud of.” His mission is

City of Tulsa proclaimed August 24th as Hospitality House of Tulsa Day BY TONI MOORE

S

eptember 2021: Hospitality House of Tulsa, a local nonprofit ministry that serves patient families from all Tulsa hospitals, celebrated their 15th year of service in the Tulsa community. To help celebrate this significant milestone, Mayor G.T. Bynum has officially proclaimed Aug. 24, 2021 as “Hospitality House of Tulsa Day”. Since opening their first home away from home in 2006, Hospitality House of Tulsa has served over 7,400 families of hospitalized patients as well as outpatients receiving treatment in our Tulsa hospitals.

With over 25,000 patients traveling to Tulsa for medical care each year, Hospitality House continues to be a significant resource, providing lodging, meals, prayer support, transportation assistance and more for about 460 families each year. Since opening, Hospitality House has served families from all 77 counties in Oklahoma, 48 states in the U.S. and eight foreign countries. “We are so grateful for our Tulsa community who continues to support families traveling to Tulsa for critical medical care,” says Toni Moore, Founder and CEO of Hospitality House of Tulsa. “For the majority of our families, unexpected medical crises like heart attacks, strokes, premature births, cancer, accidents and now COVID-19 require life-saving hospitalizations in our Tulsa hospitals. Unfortunately, a medical crisis also brings significant out-of-pocket expenses which can financially devastate a family. Tulsans have continued to provide genuine hospitality for these hurting families.”

While many medical lodging facilities had to close during the pandemic, Hospitality House of Tulsa has remained open and continues to serve families. In order to keep hospitalized patients safe, visitation hours in most hospitals have been reduced, and family members of patients are no longer allowed to sleep in waiting rooms. Hospitality House provides a safe and supportive environment for these family caregivers to stay close to their hospitalized loved one. To help Hospitality House of Tulsa celebrate their 15th anniversary, they are looking for individuals, churches and corporations to help the families by volunteering, providing a meal or making a donation of 15 dollars or more. For more information on how to help families at Hospitality through donations or volunteering, please visit www.HHTulsa. org or call 918-794-0088.
