n today’s day and age, it’s all about perspective. The staff and seniors of Tapestry at Woodland Hills live by their positive outlook on life, so much so that it has earned them recognition among their competitors. The active 55+ community was presented with the Senior Community of the Year Award for 2016 at the Zenith Awards this last year. Applicants were required to submit a video to set their community apart from the rest. Property Manager Paige Johnston headed up the project, using her iPhone to interview residents and staff giving testimonials about why they love living and working at Tapestry. She also showcased the complex through the video. “We’re known for being a bright and happy community and I wanted to show that in this video,” said Paige. “Our staff trulyy cares about our residents, o which is why we try to

benedict options. Highly recommended are the Georgia Benny’s, a dish consisting of a hand-made cheddar biscuit with a hand-breaded chicken thigh and poached eggs, topped with creamy hollandaise and served with homemade fried potatoes. This specialty pairs comfort with fine dining and goes great with a cup of coffee. For the sweet tooth, choose from the seven different entrees Toast offers in house. The lemon blueberry pancakes are a great take on a classic item. Soufflé-style pancakes are served with fresh blueberries, vanilla butter and fresh fruit. If you’re feeling fancy, try the berry

cream cheese crepes, filled with lemony cream cheese and topped with triple berry compote. If you like options of savory with your sweet, you can always add a side of eggs, biscuits or breakfast tacos. Bright colors, brick walls and conversation to fill tables surrounding make this restaurant a popular brunch spot. Generous, sharable portions leave for a happy wallet, with prices ranging from 7-15 dollars. oodwill Industries of Tulsa is celebrating their 90th anniversary in 2017– 90 years of operating with integrity, treating others with respect, upholding commitment, celebrating diversity and providing space for empowerment. “This anniversary just gives us an even greater reason to celebrate,” said Nancy Webster, the director of community relations. “We’ve been privileged to serve the community for 90 years, and are excited to continue growing our programs and the number of people we serve.” A staple in the community since 1927, the mission of Goodwill Industries of Tulsa is simple: to provide work opportunities, job training and support services for people with disabilities and other employment barriers. “Our employment and job training programs also focus on job retention which truly transforms lives, now and into the

future,” Webster said. When you donate to one of the Goodwill’s 28 Donation Centers, or shop at one of the 11 area retail stores, you directly support the company’s mission. In 2016 alone, 469, 933 people donated 21 million pounds of clothing and household items. The revenue that was generated by the sale of those goods allowed Goodwill Industries of Tulsa to provide job training and other related services to 2,156 individuals, and to serve 3,935 people through

their Goodwill Job Connection program. During 2016, Goodwill training participants filled 593 jobs in the community, and graduated with GEDs and other certifications. In the tradition of Goodwill Industries’ founding motto, “A hand-up, not a hand out”, program participants

IT’S SWARMING UP BY SEANA WARREN

T

he groundhog was wrong – at least for the Oklahoma area. While parts of the north and west have been ravaged by snow and dangerous rains, it’s been quite nice in the Sooner state. But nicer weather can invite a few visitors that no one wants to entertain termites. Swarming of these destructive and pesky little creatures usually occurs in the spring and most often during the morning following a warm rain shower, whereby the soil temperature is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. There are several areas in green country that are in high risk of springtime termite swarms including: Bartlesville, Broken Arrow, Claremore, Jenks, Miami, Muskogee, Okmulgee, Owasso, Ponca City, Sand Springs, Sapulpa and Tulsa. “We are armed and prepared for the early spring weather,” said Sheila Disler or Mother Nature’s Pest Control & Lawn Care. “Treatments are administered in and around our homes, garden, shrubs and lawns, therefore diminishing the inherent numbers of termites, mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, and bedbugs.” Termite colony nest

development is slow in the first few months. But after a few years, the queen termite can actually produce up to 10,000 offspring a year. One queen may live for many years and workers up to two years. The swarmers go to work in the thousands after a mature termite nest is large and well-established on smaller nests. When specialists find a smaller swarmer nest, it’s a sure sign that a larger termite nest is in the vicinity and professional protection is required. “We always perform a thorough, free inspection at your residence or business before recommending any treatment, “said Justin Buckmaster of Mother Nature’s. “Each pest problem

is different and requires a tailormade solution. Mother’s Nature’s experienced staff is ready to help our neighbors in green country prepare.” According to the United States Department of Agriculture, U.S. residents spend an estimated $5 billion annually to control termites and repair termite damage. One termite swarm can cause thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage to one home or business. “Our biggest investments are our homes and businesses, and it makes sense to proactively guard those investments with professional help,” said Sheila. “And, Mother Nature’s has been serving the green country area since 1979. If you need us, we will be there.” MOTHER NATURE’S PEST CONTROL AND LAWN CARE

Mother Nature’s Pest Control & Lawn Care department managers include: Brent Pressnall, pests; Tom Sevitts, lawn; David Grady, human resources; and (not pictured) Andrea Monks, office manager. Sheila Disler is communications director, and Justin Buckmaster is marketing director for Mother Nature’s.

RenuYou Neurofeedback Center has the technology to retrain your brain! BY ERICA LUDWIG

hen Dr. Barry and Cyndie Gardner opened RenuYou Neurofeedback Center in Tulsa in 2007, they envisioned a “life changing” place where individuals could get healing from PTSD, anxiety, depression and learning/ processing disorders, without relying upon medication and its unpredictable side effects. Now celebrating ten years of operation, they’ve seen their dreams come to pass in the lives of their patients. “We are passionate about what we do,” said Marie McCabe, LMFT, BCN. “We like to call it ‘brain fitness’...we’ve seen so many lives changed through

this. The brain can get stuck in a slow wave pattern, which causes attention deficits, or a fast pattern, which contributes to anxiety. Neurofeedback actually causes the brain to forge a new neuropathway.” The Gardner’s successfully

pioneered the first neurofeedback clinic in Oklahoma and are highly regarded as visionary leaders in research and development.

RenuYou Neurofeedback Center is a B.C.I.A Board Certified facility and is staffed with physicians and licensed professional therapists and counselors. Neurofeedback is a form of brain wave biofeedback, based on self operant conditioning, that helps people conquer brain dis-regulation issues. It is non-invasive, drug free, and considered to be one of the most advanced drug free therapies of this technological generation. It is said to successfully treat depression, anxiety, ADD/ADHD and learning difficulties as well as help with peak performance in athletics, music or business. RenuYou begins with a quantitative

electroencephalography (QEEG)…a brain mapping that records electrical activity and coordination of the brain. Brain patterns are then interpreted by a doctor or qualified specialist to determine the protocol for change. Once treatment begins, RenuYou uses “reward biofeedback” that features watching a movie or listening to music. As desirable patterns emerge, the continued playing of the movie or music reinforces them. When undesirable patterns emerge, the reward is taken away. As sessions progress, the goal of neurofeedback is to improve the brains’ ability to selfregulate and smoothly shift between states of relaxation and sustained focus. Since the brain controls attention and emotion, this ultimately encourages the brain to change thinking and behavior patterns and achieve peak performance. “We can see noticeable improvements within the first few sessions,” said Lacey Ford, LCSW. The clinic also offers other services including: Organic Acids Testing, Metabolic Testing, Genetic RenuYou Neurofeedback Center of Tulsa uses reward biofeedback to encourage desirable patterns.

Testing, Psychotherapy, Psychiatric Evaluations and Nutritional Counseling. After almost a decade, the staff at RenuYou is still in awe of the power of healing through neurofeedback. Thousands of studies have been generated investigating brainwave activity, from daily functioning, to mood, memory, learning difficulties and autism spectrum disorder. Cyndie and her team ultimately believe that God is the great physician, and adhere to the scripture Jeremiah 29:11, “...the plans God has are to give us a hope and a purpose” “Our mission statement is to empower people to be healthy, as God intended, beginning with a fully functional and optimal brain,” said staff psychiatrist, Dr. Stephanie Christner. LOVE ON THE ROCKS The Big Meat Run hits Disney BY CLAIRE CARTER

t

has been called one of the largest events in the state of Oklahoma. The beautiful part about it is that it all happened by accident. 22 years ago, seasoned machinist John Sumner was working in Claremore, Oklahoma when he ventured down to Grand Lake to check out the Pensacola Dam in the little community of Disney. It was then that Sumner discovered an amazing natural rock garden, which is the result of 77 years of water passing through the turbines of the dam. Worn down to the bedrock to form a canyon like surrounding, it became a place for

I

Sumner and his close friends to take their Jeeps and explore on the weekends. The area is now simply referred to as “the rocks.”

some 10,000 from all over the country during the course of one weekend in the little lake town. You’ll see a little bit of everything at the event in

It grew into a customer appreciation event for Sumner Machine Works, which is owned by Sumner in Arkansas City, Kansas. By word of mouth alone the event that started with 12 people now brings in

terms of transportation; Jeeps, trucks, RZRS, fourwheelers and even a few spectacles such as a horse or a tractor. Yet, it’s the custom made “rock crawlers” that Sumner helps build, that most of the spectators

come to see. There are two major “climbs” that are attempted by most, Viagra Hill and Bounty Hill. There is a certain satisfaction in watching the participants attempt and succeed the vertical crawls, yet there is more of a crowd reaction when they tumble over and fail. The name of the event, The Big Meat Run, comes from the thick width of the tires that adorn the rock crawling machines. “It really was just a matter of luck and good timing,” stated Sumner on the event itself. Due to some local politics in Disney over the years, the event still lacks major sponsorships. But

Sumner forges on just for the fun of it it. “I love seeing people having fun with their families and having a good time,” he said. The free event, which takes place this March 24-26 below the Pensacola Dam, will no doubt result in another great turnout of spectators and participants. In terms of tourism, the numbers are undoubtedly huge for not only Disney, but

for the 60 mile radius su di the h event surrounding in Northeast Oklahoma. Not only are gas and food sales astronomical over the course of the three-day event; hotels, cabins, parks and campgrounds are booked up for miles around. “It’s a great event and we’re lucky to have it return year after year,” stated Disney Mayor Chris Tutor. Tutor, who also owns the Dam Rec Park, stated

th hat The Big Mea Meat Run has that elped put Disney on the helped map, inspired other rock crawling events and even brought new campgrounds to the small town. In just a few short years Disney has seen a handful of new business owners come to town. CopperWood Lodge owned by Dusty Wood has built a number of great cabins close to the dam. Two Mom’s Campground owner Shelly Martin has also

built a fun spot for offroaders to enjoy enjoy. There’s also Cherokee Spirit RV Park, which is a gated park owned by Norma Crockett and the oldest campground Hogan’s Off Road Park owned by Russ Hogan. FRAUDSTERS IN FULL FORCE THIS TAX SEASON

ou receive an email from what appears to be the IRS, warning you that your tax return is unable to be processed due to errors. In order to avoid a tax penalty or possible legal action, you are instructed to provide some information immediately – click the link to get started. Do you click the link? The criminal behind this scam hopes you do. It’s known as phishing, and these scams steal millions of dollars each year, according to the FBI. The IRS is warning taxpayers to be aware of the Dirty Dozen Tax Scams you may encounter, available at irs.gov, such as false tax preparers, phone scams and phishing. Phishing is when a fraudster sends an email message pretending to be a company, like the IRS, a bank or popular retail site. The email may claim your account has been compromised or there was an error with your recent purchase. It will direct you to click on a link to resolve the issue. The link leads to a fake website that looks authentic and you feel comfortable to enter sensitive information. 28 |

The IRS does not initiate contact by email, text message or social media channels to request personal or financial information. They also will never call and demand immediate payment over the phone. If you get an email or phone call like this, it’s a scam. Protect yourself with these tips. We click without thinking and presto, easy money for criminals.” DO NOT CLICK ON LINKS IN EMAILS Go to the company’s official website to log in to your account. “If you receive an alert stating there is something wrong with your account, do not click the provided link,” said Rudd. “Criminals use scare tactics to get you to ‘act now’ and ‘protect your information’ when in fact they’re leading you into a trap.”

Never give out personal or financial information to any request that you did not initiate. This includes bank account numbers, Social Security number, username, mother’s maiden name, challenge question answers or PINs - “If your bank sends you an email requesting you to update your information, DO NOT click on the link in the email,” Rudd warns. “Go to your bank’s official webpage and log in to your account. This is a daily ritual in Ischia, and thanks to Your Pie, authentic brick oven meals can be part of your daily winddown, too. Your Pie opened in Tulsa in October 2016, and is home to the 10” hand-tossed, brick oven pizza topped with all fresh ingredients, scratch made sauce and specialty mozzarella cheese – and you get to pick the toppings you want. Each pie is made especially for you (which means you don’t have to share!) They also serve made to order paninis, salads and gelato. Your Pie is ahead of the game with menu options for dietary needs like gluten free crust, vegan cheese, gluten free salad dressings and sorbet, which is a dairy free dessert. “I am so excited to introduce Your Pie to Tulsa,” said Griffin. “I have owned the Honey Baked Ham in town for years and I was looking to diversify when I found Your Pie. A ROOM FULL OF POSSIBILITIES

here was a time when the garage was thought of as a storage room attached to the house. In most cases it caught the unsightly, unseen and sometimes unwanted mess. The days of the clutter catching, grease monkey catch-all are going the way of the dinosaur. Garages these days have become extensions of the living area. From man-caves to show places for big kid toys, this parking and storage space is taking on its own unique place in the home, for some even being the hangout spot with additions of big screen TV’s, sound systems, decorative art or even disco balls. Ask Mella at My Choice REAL TIPS FOR SENIORS LIVING INDEPENDENTLY

KEEPING YOUR BODY STRONG One of the ongoing effects of aging is loss of muscle mass. If you don’t do anything to fight it, you could find yourself unable to get out of an armchair or off the toilet one day. Aging also brings declines in aerobic capacity and flexibility. And those factors together increase your risk of falls—at a time in life when bones tend to be more brittle. Eighteen percent of of seniors say they have fallen in the last year, and of those, 71 percent were injured, including 8 percent who broke a bone. Here’s a quick test to find out whether your fitness has deteriorated to a point that puts you at risk: Time how long it takes you to get out of an armchair, walk 10 feet, walk back, and sit down again. A healthy adult older than 60 should be able to do it in 10 seconds or less. Flunked the test? The good news is that it’s never too late to start working out to counter aging’s effects. There’s no medication, no medical device that has anywhere near the effectiveness of physical activity. Here are some concrete steps you can take, based on recommendations from experts at the American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine. Get a physical-therapy evaluation Ask your doctor to prescribe a consultation with a licensed physical therapist who can help you design a safe exercise program. Do 150 minutes of cardio every week Aim for at least 30 minutes at a time of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (think a brisk walk where you’re not breathing so hard that you can’t carry on a conversation) five days per week. For motivation, consider using an activity tracker; the Fitbit One is a top-rated model.

and do eight to 10 exercises targeting the muscles of your upper body, lower body, and core. Start slowly and work up to a weight or resistance that causes fatigue after eight to 14 repetitions. If you have problems with your joints or bones, consult a certified trainer or physical therapist before starting a program. Keep your balance One of the simplest exercises is to practice standing on one leg. Also consider tai chi, which numerous studies have shown improves balance and reduces the risk of falls. Track when you fall Many seniors hide when they have a fall. It is important to tell your doctor and keep a record on your home calendar. Falls are indicators that can alert your doctor to age related problems. The Superhero Challenge is the organization’s second annual fundraiser; the other is the annual black tie event, the Candlelight Ball. According to Rebecca Thompson, event co-chair, it was a no brainer to put this event together. “The thought was simple,” she said. “We have an event for adults, why not have something for the entire family?” Tulsa and the surrounding communities come out to support and build the event up to make it a huge success. Many organizations volunteer to build the obstacle courses to make it light and fun. Thompson says, “CAN is so well run 34 |

I reached out to Jake and he was very responsive, professional and prompt. He was the only contractor who came to inspect the job and make recommendations. While we were negotiating the pergola, Jake noticed my roof damage and worked with me and my insurance company to process a claim for the roof replacement. We contracted with OCR for both the pergola and the roof replacement. We had recently completed a significant landscaping update in the front yard so I asked Jake to make sure that this area was properly protected. OCR showed up when they said they would, worked hard to finish the job as quickly as possible, and cleaned the yard so well you could not tell they had ever been there. Additionally, with the new impact resistant roof, my annual insurance premiums went down by 43%!

I would absolutely recommend OCR for your roofing or outdoor living projects. In fact, I have already recommended OCR to our neighbors who also sustained hail damage from the storm that damaged our property.” - Shawn M.

Glenn and Curtis Simms, owners of Re-Bath of Tulsa advise their clients to be aware of the references and credibility of who they’re looking to do business with, and of course, what questions to ask.

The brothers not only want to fulfill your current remodeling needs, but also help you plan for the future with quality products that will stand the test of time. “People are staying in their homes longer,” says Glenn. “When homeowners remodel now, they’re thinking about what will make sense for them
