Mommy Makeovers Dr. Brian Kent will host a lecture on Thursday, April 19 to educate women on how to restore their figures after pregnancy. By Lorrie Ward Jackson It is sometimes said that time heals all wounds. But sometimes, time is guilty of inflicting wounds, as anyone who has experienced the ravages of time on his or her body will attest. Another culprit in this war against aging is life experience— which is why women, who bear the responsibility of childbirth, seem to bear the brunt of time’s eroding forces. Plastic surgeon Brian D. Kent, MD, who has dedicated his practice to helping people restore some of what time has stolen, is pleased to invite the community to a lecture entitled “Mommy Makeovers” at Bailey Ranch Club House in Owasso on Thursday, April 19 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. “This lecture is designed to educate women on what can be done to restore their figure after pregnancy and what the procedures entail,
including potential complications and recovery periods, what kind of scarring to expect, and more,” says Dr. Kent. “I would also like to show what kind of results can often be obtained through before and after pictures – looking at results, which are sometimes quite dramatic depending upon what you’re starting with, helps people to be realistic in their expectations.” The main procedures discussed will involve what Dr. Kent calls “improving the torso from breast to abdomen,” including breast lifts, reduction, or augmentation and tummy tucks. “A woman’s stomach often needs a tummy tuck of some sort after pregnancy, even if it is a mini-abdominoplasty when the problem isn’t that bad,” Dr. Kent says. “And childbirth often causes loss of

Your Hand, Your Help, Their Hope Kwero 2012, the 3rd annual auction and dinner benefitting orphans in Uganda, will be held Friday, April 20 at the Historic Mayo Hotel in downtown Tulsa.
By Sheryl Sowell You are invited to a night of celebration – a celebration of transforming lives that have been given new hope for 48 orphans in Lira, Uganda. Proceeds from Kwero 2012, Project Hope Worldwide’s 3rd annual auction and dinner, will go towards the continued construction of homes and a school at Calo Me Lare (also known as “Village of Redemption”). You won’t want to miss this exciting night of delicious food and great entertainment – all for a great cause. Kwero will be held Friday, April 20, 2012 in the ballroom at the Historic Mayo Hotel, located at 115 West Fifth Street in downtown Tulsa. Doors open at 6 p.m., when the silent auction begins, and dinner and the live auction begin at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.projecthopeworldwide.org beginning March 1. A few of the auction items up for grabs include vacations to Panama Beach, a catered dinner for 10 at the Smoke, a suite for 20 for a Drillers game, personally autographed cookbooks by Trisha Yearwood, a year of lawn service, four tickets to the Rangers versus Astros game, a night’s stay at the Price Tower Inn in Bartlesville, four club seats to see James Taylor in concert,
photography sessions, a Starbucks gift basket, two tickets to an OU football game, golf games, and more, with additional items being added frequently. Special musical guest The Groove Merchants will provide entertainment throughout the evening. The Groove Merchants experience combines a highenergy show with great danceable music. Providing people with exceptional entertainment since 1988, the band prides itself on being the most fun group of professional musicians in the Southwest. Transitions from soft dinner jazz to rockin’ dance music are smooth and seamless. “Kwero has proven to be such a great event, not only in raising funds for orphans, but also bringing people into awareness of the reality of Uganda and the children – all while having a great evening filled with food, fun and dancing!” says Project Hope Worldwide’s VP of Finance and Child Sponsorships Kelley Compton. Formed in 2008, Kwero was created to extend a helping hand to the orphans of Uganda and to make a true and lasting difference. Before living at the orphanage, many of the 48 children were parentless, hungry, sick and unwanted. Take for
instance the story of Dickens, who was beaten and left for dead after a violent and deadly attack on his village by the Lord’s Resistance Army. But now Dickens is a happy and thriving boy who loves learning and making friends. By attending Kwero 2012, your generous giving will go towards the continual building of more homes for the orphans, as well as a school building where they will receive the best education possible. You can make a real difference in the life of Dickens and all the other children living at Calo Me Lare. The stated mission of Project Hope Worldwide is: “Redeeming defenseless and vulnerable children, providing them hope and opportunity to change their world.” Sponsorships are available for Kwero 2012. For the most up-to-date info on the event, visit the Kwero blog at http://kwero2012.blogspot.com.

STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
Decide-o-phobia BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
I dread going to the car lot. I dread being swarmed by the salespeople. I dread having to sort through and understand all of the options. I especially dread the negotiations to finally make a purchase. To top it off, I hate the time that it requires doing all of these things. So what do I do? I put it off until my car absolutely won’t “go” any further and leaves me stranded at Bass Pro-to be towed in the middle of the night by a three time ex-convict (I’m not kidding, he told me prison stories all the way home!) to my dark house. All this because my decideophobia had been acting up for several weeks. Lesson learned! So, save yourself some grief! If you find yourself with a bad case of “decideophobia” about your money or investments, make a plan. Give yourself a limited time frame to make a decision.
Each village will be comprised of: • 32 homes providing a safe, nurturing, and structured environment for 256 children who are total orphans • A school based on the Classical Christian model. Children from the community are invited to be educated at Calo Me Lare as well. • A medical clinic that extends its services to the surrounding area • A community development/vocational training center • A church that is both transformational and missional is planted in the center of the village
For more information, contact
ASK THE MONEY MAVEN
Over the last twenty years in both the counseling and financial business, I have seen many cases of what I call decideophobia. The symptoms of this “disorder” come in various forms. However, the common themes are: a seeming inability to make a decision, extreme avoidance of the subject at hand, a mistrust of the advice of professionals, a fear of being incompetent to make a good decision, and an unwillingness to ask for help. Decideophobia can manifest when making any type of decision but is particularly pervasive when it comes to making important decisions such as about “your money or investments”. Some of the root causes of decideophobia are the following: 1) fear of making a wrong decision 2) a lack of understanding about the available options 3) wanting to maintain a sense of control over the issue “whatever it may be” and finally, 4) not feeling confident about the advice/ professional offering the service. For instance every single time I have to buy a car, I have this feeling of dread.
Project Hope Worldwide’s strategy is to create holistic villages.
During that time frame set goals to think about what you want. What do you want from an advisor? What do you want from your investment? What is most important to you? (safety, growth) Proactively research the options available. You can easily find information online. Find a professional service you trust. Ask family and friends, research different advisors websites, Google their name (you can find out a lot about an advisor and their practice this way). Who you trust matters. In this type of market environment, not making a decision could leave you stranded in the dark with an ex-convict. I should know. Decide and move forward! You will be glad you did. Oklahoma Originals
Three Oklahoma talents will take the stage on Friday, April 20 at the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center.
By Duane Blankenship The Broken Arrow Arts and Humanities Council presents "Oklahoma Originals" on Friday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available online and at the box office at the BAPAC. This exciting presentation will showcase three prominently recognized performers, all from Oklahoma – Grady Nichols, Jenny Labow, and RADIORADIO. The evening will be relaxed in a familyfriendly setting.
the beach, explore the streets of London, go a little country, hit the west coast, spend time daydreaming, and come back home again. You’ll hear selections from this album with Grady’s “singing” saxophone taking you on a musical journey, touching various musical genres. Grady is full of surprises with sounds peppered by a driving banjo, pedal steel guitar, steel drums, and string sections that are woven seamlessly into cohesive contemporary jazz/pop settings. He has explained his passion for the saxophone by saying he feels it is a “voice” that can “sing” a lot of styles. The sax has played a key role in some of the most memorable songs in pop music over the last 30 years, and Grady is one of today’s most recognized sax musicians. He delivers great performances night after night for rock, pop, Christian, and country fans. Jenny Labow was born in Toronto, Canada, and moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, with her family when she was 12. She played in high school rock bands and eventually joined the iconic band Glasshouse. The band parted ways after recording two albums and playing countless

gigs. Jenny then recorded her first solo CD, “Flourish,” which was signed to Renaissance Records. She played Lilith Fair in Oklahoma City that same year. Lilith Fair was one of the most successful touring festivals of the 1990s, featuring a lineup of female solo artists and bands led by women. Jenny’s music was chosen for the independent film “Chillicothe,” in which she also made her acting debut. The film was accepted and shown at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. After recording her second album, Jenny moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career in music and film. Jenny’s longtime popularity as one of the most loved and recognized musicians in Tulsa has created a demand that keeps her returning to Oklahoma on a regular basis for live performances. Jenny appears either as a solo act, in a duo, or with a full band. RADIORADIO is an original band comprised of veteran musicians with a drive to succeed, surpassed only by their talent. FREE Information Seminar Thursday, April 19 at 6 p.m. Bailey Ranch Clubhouse RSVP 918-994-4100 After child birth, many women lose some of the volume and firmness of their breast tissue. Dr. Kent recommends either a breast augmentation, a breast lift or a combination of the two, mastopexy-augmentation. Pregnancy can also wreak havoc on the abdominal wall, stretching the muscles and the skin. Add stretch marks to this and you have the typical post-pregnancy abdomen. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, treats all of these problems, helping to restore your pre-pregnancy appearance or, in some cases, improve upon it. Often, Dr. Kent can combine breast and abdomen procedures in the same surgery with dramatic results. Please contact our practice today to schedule a Mommy Makeover consultation.

Selecting a Surgeon? You have the final decision on who performs your surgery.
By Duane Blankenship If your internist or family doctor ever tells you it’s time to see a surgeon, please remember that you are the one who ultimately selects your surgeon. Although he or she may make a referral or help you make a decision, the final decision is yours. Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka specializes in general, vascular and endovascular surgery. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Oklahoma and attended medical school at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Hrdlicka completed his internship at Ohio University Doctors Hospital in Columbus, where he also did his residency in general surgery as well as his fellowship. He also did a sub-fellowship in endovascular surgery at the Arizona Heart Institute in Phoenix. Dr. Hrdlicka was board certified as a general surgeon in 2000 by the State Board of Ohio and in 2001 by the Oklahoma State Medical Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiner. Professional organizations of which Dr. Hrdlicka is a member include the American
Osteopathic Association, Ohio Osteopathic Association, American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (Candidate), and the American Medical Association. Claremore Surgeons, Inc. is a general and vascular surgical
specialty office in Claremore, just 25 minutes northeast of Tulsa. They have been in practice since 1970, when Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka’s father, Dr. Larry Hrdlicka, and Dr. Larry Ivan Young began the practice. Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka

joined the practice in 2000. Kyle was raised in Claremore and graduated from Claremore High School in 1983. He and his wife live there with their four children, and he enjoys hunting, fishing, camping and golf. Claremore Surgeons recently received the 2011 Small Business of the Year Award presented by the Claremore Chamber of Commerce. During the business’s extensive remodeling project last year, only local contractors were used. Some of the full-service general surgical procedures performed by Dr. Hrdlicka include general surgery, vascular surgery, advanced laparoscopy, surgical oncology, colonoscopy, vasectomy, minimally invasive surgical procedures, breast cancer surgery, mammosite, laser venous closure, and laser/light therapy. He also performs a complete line of endoscopic procedures including colonoscopy and EGD. Unless your insurance company requires it, no referral is needed when you make your appointment to visit the offices of Claremore Surgeons. “If you have doubts or questions, just give us a call,” said Dr. Hrdlicka. “We are contracted with most
insurance companies.” Claremore Surgeons has privileges at Hillcrest Claremore Regional, St. John Owasso, and Memorial Surgical Center in Tulsa located at 81st and Memorial. “If you have no insurance, but have surgical needs that we provide, my staff and I can often get you an attractive cash rate by negotiating on your behalf, and the rate could equate to a very big savings,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. He adds that most elective surgical needs are negotiable up front, and their office is happy to do the negotiations for you. Bottom line – it’s all about you at Claremore Surgeons. Check them out if ever general surgery is recommended to correct a health issue or problem you are experiencing. And remember, it’s your decision to pick the surgeon you want to perform the procedure.

baited with a formulation that is reportedly 2.5 times more effective at eliminating termite colonies than the original Sentricon System. Although the original system is still effective, the new HD formulation is just a lot better and longer lasting. With it, traps generally have to be checked only once each year because there is bait in every station. Termites eat the bait, carry it underground into their respective colonies, and regurgitate it, where it is consumed by other members of the colony. As the deadly bait is consumed, activity becomes less and less until the colony is eliminated. Sentricon
Swarming Termites Mean Business Mother Nature’s predicts the appearance of termites early in 2012.
By Duane Blankenship The research department at Mother Nature’s Pest Control reports that 90 percent of all termite colonies swarm every year, usually in the spring. They typically swarm during daylight hours when it’s sunny and usually after a rain. Swarming termites should always be taken seriously because they are reproductive colony members being sent out to form new colonies. They live only four to six hours and are your “alarm clock” that termites are in the area. Mother Nature’s predicts that 2012 is going to be a great year – for swarming termites! “Although swarmers usually appear around the first of April, they were reported this year as early as late February,” said Pest Manager Tara Pearson. Mother Nature’s has been eliminating termite colonies since 1979 and is still the largest Sentricon installation and monitoring company in the state of Oklahoma. The Sentricon Elimination System is eco-friendly and provides homeowners great peace of mind. a free estimate and the best solution to eliminate existing termite colonies, as well as prevent future infestations. About a year ago, Mother Nature’s introduced a new Sentricon HD Always-Active System, and each station is

bait station installations save the homeowner from having their home drilled with holes in the foundation, which results in a “machine gun” look that never goes away. Mother Nature’s lawn care department is led by Tom Sevitts, who has been in the lawn care industry for over 30 years. They treat all types of grasses with fertilizers and weed inhibitors, and apply treatments for the elimination and control of fleas, ticks, ants, spiders and other nuisance lawn insects. “Everything seems to be happening earlier this year,” says Tom. “If you haven’t already, call now to schedule an application of a good pre-emergent.” He also reports that cool-season turf (fescues) took a real beating with the prolonged heat and draught of 2011. If you did not reseed your fescue this past fall, Tom recommends that you wait until this coming fall to do so or lay new sod now. Seeding fescue grasses in the spring has a low germination success rate. “Bermuda grasses,” said Tom, “are not showing anywhere near the winter damage we saw a year ago when northeastern Oklahoma suffered one of our worst winters on record.” Our area is already seeing signs of spring with blooming and leafing Bradford Pear Trees. Soil temperatures have remained warmer than normal and crab grasses will predictably appear sooner throughout the area. Tom recommends that you scalp your lawn early this year, with one caution. Be sure to wait until any
Tom Sevitts leads the lawn care department for Mother Nature’s. threat of a hard freeze has passed. If you aerate, do so after your Bermuda is up and growing, which again, might be much sooner than normal. Bermuda grasses are already growing in some areas. “If you’ve already sprayed for henbit, the pretty little purple flowers in your yard, and they are still visible, mow them and they shouldn’t come back,” said Tom. Mother Nature’s offers monthly lawn care packages available March through November. Call or visit www.mothernaturesinc.com for details on all provided services and benefits. Gluten-free pizza is available for dine-in or carryout at the following locations:
Mazzio’s Adds Gluten-Free Pizza to Menu Those with gluten allergies can now create their own 10-inch or specialty gluten-free pizza for dine-in or carryout at certain Mazzio’s locations.
By Sheryl Sowell Mazzio’s Italian Eatery announces the addition of a gluten-free pizza to its menu at select locations. Guests can create their own 10-inch or specialty gluten-free pizza. The new pizza is available for dine-in and carryout at specific locations. According to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA), approximately three million people have Celiac disease, and 10 million Americans have some form of intolerance or sensitivity to gluten. “Adding a gluten-free pizza is a must to better serve all of our customers, including those with gluten allergies,” said Greg Lippert, president and CEO of Mazzio’s. “We realized the need for a gluten-free option and have strived to make it as close to the Mazzio’s traditional pizza recipe as possible.” Alicia Wilbins of Owasso has Celiac disease and is thrilled about the gluten-free addition to the Mazzio’s menu. “It’s refreshing to go to a restaurant and find pizza that is delicious but a great gluten-free option,” she says. “I have always enjoyed the great salad bar at Mazzio’s but this allows me to actually go out for pizza with friends and family.”

Many people without gluten allergies thrive on a gluten-free diet as well. According to the NFCA, this diet is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing nutritional movements in America, gaining popularity for its health and therapeutic benefits. Eating a gluten-free diet may improve one’s health by alleviating symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, insomnia, and joint and muscle pain, among others. With 163 locations in nine states, Tulsa-based Mazzio’s Italian Eatery, established in 1961, offers customers fast service, convenience, value and quality. Its extensive menu features a wide variety of pizza, pasta, salad and sandwiches. Open daily for lunch and dinner, Mazzio’s is perfect for dine-in, carryout, delivery or catering. Hemophiliac’s Knee Pain Led Her to Dr. LaButti In a long list of orthopedic surgeons that hemophiliac Kortney Breshears visited, Dr. LaButti was the first able to treat her.
By Joshua Danker-Dake Kortney Breshears, 19, of Antlers, Oklahoma, has hemophilia, a blood clotting disorder. In July of 2010, she dislocated her right kneecap. “I first saw an orthopedist in McAlester, but because I had hemophilia, he was afraid to touch me,” Kortney says. “He told me that since surgery was not required, I could live with a crooked knee.” Nearly a year later, Kortney was experiencing dislocations from even the slightest of movements. Kortney contacted her hematologist and was connected with an orthopedist in Oklahoma City. “This orthopedist wasn’t knowledgeable about hemophilia,” Kortney says. “She didn’t see anything wrong with my knee and didn’t know why I was experiencing pain. I did twelve weeks of physical therapy under her care, but without a lot of results. At that point, she wanted to do surgery to reconstruct the left side of my knee. I decided to look for another orthopedist.” A clinic in Paris, Texas directed Kortney to a specialist
in Dallas. Finally, a friend referred her to Dr. LaButti. “Dr. LaButti welcomed me and my hemophilia, which was a huge relief,” says Kortney. “At my first appointment, he had enough familiarity with hemophilia to ask me which deficiency I had. My comfort level rose, and although Dr. LaButti hadn’t worked with a hemophiliac before, he welcomed the challenge.” Dr. LaButti identified the problem with her knee immediately, Kortney says. “My knee was not tracking correctly because my kneecap was out of place. He also discovered laxity in my ligaments that was adding to the problem.” They discussed therapy and how it hadn’t worked, then elected to do surgery. Dr. LaButti worked with Kortney’s hematologist to create a treatment plan to control Kortney’s bleeding before, during and after surgery. In September, 2011, Kortney underwent a tibial tubercle osteotomy. Kortney’s tibia was shaved near the joint, the shaved
piece was moved and fastened with two screws, her kneecap was moved to align correctly, and the laxity in her ligaments was alleviated. “I was very concerned because this was my first surgery, but Dr. LaButti was great at calming my fears,” Kortney says. “He worked closely with me and let me call any time I had a question, no matter how silly it was. And he explained the procedure so well.” Prior to the surgery, Kortney had experienced arthritis pain and grinding in the knee. “A few days after surgery, I began to feel less pain than I had before the surgery. I spent almost ten weeks with my leg in extension. Every time I visited Dr. LaButti, the staff was so encouraging, which really helped me get through it. Getting out of my brace felt like my greatest accomplishment.” Kortney has finished her recovery, and says her experience with Dr. LaButti was entirely positive. “My knee has healed completely, with no problems and very little pain throughout
Kortney Breshears had difficulty finding an orthopedic surgeon who was comfortable treating her due to her hemophilia, until being referred to Dr. LaButti. the process. I have very little arthritis pain now and no grinding. My physical therapist was impressed with how well aligned it was and how much better I was already walking. He says he’ll recommend Dr. LaButti to any of his patients who need a great orthopedist.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip

Spring Into Action for MS
The Spring Market will be held Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Mingo Valley Christian School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with all proceeds benefitting the National MS Society, Oklahoma.
By Sheryl Sowell In conjunction with the 25th annual Walk MS: Tulsa, to be held Saturday, April 21 at Tulsa’s Veterans Park, a member of one of the MS walking teams has created the inaugural Spring Market on April 28. Laurie Dwyer, cocaptain of Team M.O.M. – Moms on the Move, has been involved with the National MS Society for several years, and had a desire to become further involved in helping the organization and the thousands of local people who suffer from multiple sclerosis. Laurie’s daughter Amy was diagnosed with MS in 2008 at age 16. “We became involved with the National MS Society when Amy was diagnosed, and they have been such a blessing in our lives. We are so grateful for everything they have done for our family, and we wanted to do something big to give back,” says Laurie. Laurie and Patti Barker co-founded Team M.O.M. four years ago and have participated in the Walk MS: Tulsa every year since. Their goal this year is to raise $5,000. “We also want to
create connections within the community,” says Laurie. “The theme of this year’s MS Awareness Week was ‘MS Kills Connections – Our Connections Can Kill MS,’ and the idea of a spring market connecting a community goes along with the theme perfectly.” Laurie explains that this is the first time she’s ever organized an event of this kind, and she has been pleasantly overwhelmed by the support offered from the community. She contacted Mingo Valley, where Amy attended school for 11 years, and the school went above and beyond to help. “Mingo Valley Christian School donated their facility without charge, and the junior class is hosting concessions for the event,” says Laurie. A diverse variety of items will be available for purchase. The 35 vendors include jewelry, photography services, books, home décor and wares (such as microfiber sheets), cosmetics, baby items, Tupperware, Scentsy candles, apparel and more. “The inspiration for the Spring Market
was an event like Mayfest, where you find a lot of different items,” says Laurie. “The majority of the vendors will be selling unique, handmade items; for example, we have one who will sell her beautiful homemade quilts, and

another who will have his amazing metal artworks.” Door prizes will also be given away throughout the day. Concessions will be available for both breakfast and lunch. The junior class is volunteering their time to serve up breakfast burritos, donuts, coffee and bottled water in the morning, and taco salads, ultimate nachos, ham and cheese wraps, fruit, chips, cookies, candy, and drinks in the afternoon. All proceeds from the Spring Market will benefit the National MS Society, Oklahoma. Laurie is thankful to be able to give back to the National MS Society through the Spring
Market, as the organization has helped her daughter in so many ways. Amy is currently attending OSU with a double major in speech pathology and audiology, and she hopes to work at a veterans’ hospital after graduation next May. She is also planning her wedding to her fiancé, Caleb, in November. For everyone who has the pleasure of meeting Amy, it is clear she is a remarkable young woman who is thriving in spite of having this disease. MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, which interrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body. Back to a Pain-Free Life Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma helped patient lead a normal life after 15 years of back pain.
By Carol Beck-Round For 15 years, Stephen Hager battled back pain. Physical therapy, steroid injections, electric stimulation and painkillers didn’t relieve the pain following an accident in 1997. “I didn’t want to get hooked on medications,” says Hager, “and most treatments only gave me temporary relief, two weeks at the most.” Back pain affects 85 percent of the U.S. population at some point in their lives. Hager’s pain began with an injury to his left thigh. While working at the Port of Catoosa, Hager was looking forward to playing basketball at an Oklahoma college that fall. His basketball dreams ended, however, when he accidentally cut into the muscle in his thigh with a concrete saw. Surgery left the injured leg 3/8 inches shorter. Six months of physical therapy followed so that Hager could learn to walk again. Told by doctors that he would never be able to walk without a cane or a crutch, he decided at age 18 that he would rather limp. “It’s kind of hard to get a girlfriend when you’re limping around,” he says. “So I began to contort my body so it would
disguise the limp.” Because Hager was fighting the limp, his spine became crooked. “As years went by, the pain got worse,” he says. “I’d get to a point where if I had an episode, I couldn’t move. They could last anywhere from two to three days to almost two weeks.” It was through a friend that Hager learned about Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma. “My friend talked highly of Dr. Gary Fortner, so I thought I would check out this treatment that I had never heard of,” he says. After Dr. Fortner measured Hager, he confirmed the left leg was indeed 3/8 inches shorter. “I thought I was destined to have surgery,” says Hager. “I learned that if I had already had back surgery, I would not have been a good candidate for spinal decompression.” Hager began his 20-treatment plan in early February. “The first two weeks, I went daily, Monday through Friday for one hour each visit,” he says. “There is no pain involved in the treatment, and I had immediate relief after the first one.” After just two weeks of

treatment, Hager had absolutely no pain. Before then, if you had asked Hager to describe his pain level on a scale of one to ten, he would have replied with a six or a seven. “You just grow to accept it,” he adds. However, the pain had affected his ability to hold down a job. “I don’t like to miss work,” he says. “However, there were days I had to miss because I was in the hospital or at a doctor’s office undergoing treatment. I didn’t have a choice because the pain was so intense.” The day Hager first walked into Spinal Decompression’s office, he says, “I could barely walk in because I was stooped over in pain.” His brother, Seth, affirms the shape his older brother was in before he began his spinal decompression treatments. “He couldn’t even stand up straight.” “I am very pleased with everyone in the office,” says Hager. “They all take time to visit with you and discuss what you are going through, while some doctor’s offices run you through like you are part of a cattle herd. They don’t. They really care.”
The area’s only Accu-SPINA™ treatment.
Stephen Hager, who suffered from back pain for 15 years, says it affected all areas of his life. Hager stands beside the Accu-Spina machine at Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma that helped him find relief from years of pain. For Hager, relief from the constant pain has had another benefit. “Before I went through spinal decompression, my pain sometimes stopped me from doing things with my children. I am now able to spend time playing ball outside with them.” “I highly recommend spinal decompression to anyone who has been sitting there in pain,” he adds. To find out more about

RSU’s main campus is in Claremore with satellite campuses in Pryor and Bartlesville.
Admission to the event is $30 per person, while a table for eight can be reserved for $300. The event is open to the public. Over 400 attended last year’s event, which netted the foundation $72,000. Dr. Mallory Spoor-Baker of Advanced Cosmetic Medicine offers procedures to help you look amazing this spring and summer.
By Sheryl Sowell During the spring and fastapproaching summer months, less is more – people are dressing in less clothing and wearing less makeup. When you’re out at the lake or by the pool over the next few months, you won’t want to have foundation caked on your face – you want to feel free and confident in your skin. Dr. Mallory Spoor-Baker of Advanced Cosmetic Medicine in Tulsa can help transform the appearance of your skin into a look of radiance for the warmer seasons. For patients who desire dramatic changes in heavy textural issues, Dr. Spoor-Baker recommends the Pearl, a resurfacing laser that combines the best effects of Erbium and CO2 lasers without the risk of serious side effects. “The Pearl is essentially a thermal peel, providing significant surface exfoliation. My Pearl patients have smoother skin, smaller pores and an overall refined texture within three to five days. Their skin is fresher, softer and brighter, and their heavy lines are greatly improved.” The Pearl procedure combines the impact of

It utilizes non-invasive laser technology to safely, discretely and effectively improve your appearance. “Over the course of four to five treatments, Laser Genesis can help restore your skin’s youthful glow by smoothing out uneven textures caused by aging, sun damage or scars. The laser procedure that most dramatically changes pigment – red or brown – is Intense Pulse Light (IPL), also known as limelight. “IPL is excellent for the treatment of brown and red pigmentation on the face, hands and legs, or just about anywhere else,” Dr. Spoor-Baker explains. “We’ve known for years that IPL laser also stimulates collagen synthesis in tissue, so you can see improved skin texture, smoothness, and reduced pore size. On the face and neck, IPL helps to clear up blotchy skin, uneven pigmentation, veins, redness, and texture problems. It works extremely well on the hands to remove brown pigmentation and will also improve the overall skin texture. In as little as two treatments you can see clearer, younger-looking hands.” To treat fine line wrinkles, large pores, uneven skin texture, redness and scars, Dr. Spoor-Baker recommends

Mommy Makeovers surgeries, such as C-sections or hysterectomies, which can consolidate recovery time dramatically. After Dr. Kent has relayed the facts of these surgeries and shown before and after photos during his lecture, he will open the floor for a question and answer session. Hors d’oevres will be served throughout the evening. Surgeries performed by plastic surgeons are not always of a cosmetic nature. Dr. Kent also performs many reconstructive procedures, including
post-mastectomy breast reconstruction and surgeries for non-healing wounds and pressure sores. For a complete list of surgeries performed, visit www.BrianKentMD.com. Dr. Kent is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has practiced cosmetic surgery for 25 years. In 1987, after completing his plastic surgery residency at the University of Texas (where he won the Samuel Spira Award for Excellence in Plastic Surgery), he began his practice in Orange County,

The doctor reports that he loves both the people and the values of Oklahoma, and he looks forward to sharing his brand of customized, caring, and expert cosmetic surgery with the people here. The Secret Garden “We had a wonderful response for auditions, with almost 70 talented people auditioning,” says Kay Neldon of OCTC. “Sadly, the Stone Canyon Elementary stage is not large enough to display all the talented actors and actresses that were interested in participating, which required our directing staff to make some tough decisions. Thank you and kudos to all who were courageous enough to share their talent at auditions!” Rehearsals are now in full swing, as the cast is busy learning songs, choreography and their lines for the spring musical. “Our cast of 18 includes OCTC veterans and several who are talented but new to OCTC; ages range from 11 years old and up,” says Kay. Terry Grufik is directing, with Danni Pawley as choreographer and Amy Mitchell as music director. The directing staff works side by side to lead the cast in music, dance, and acting

Make Coffee Your Daily Grind Clary Sage College now offers a barista program for those with a passion for the growing coffee industry.
By Sheryl Sowell Do you have a passion for coffee? If your goal is to become a true artisan in the coffee industry, Clary Sage College has an exciting, innovative program for you. Their brand-new barista program is the only one of its kind in Oklahoma and one of only a few such programs in the nation. “The coffee industry is the fastest growing market segment of the food industry,” explains Barista Instructor Kent Berry. “This program is designed for those who desire to become artisan coffee makers. They may want to open their own coffee business, get into coffee shop management, or simply have an edge in the job market. Some coffee shop owners do not hire anyone unless they are careerdriven baristas.” According to Kent, the coffee industry movement is currently experiencing its third wave. “The first wave was gas station coffee, the second was the rise of big chain coffee shops such as Starbucks, and the third focuses on artisan roasted coffee,” he explains. “What our barista students learn is that creating coffee is an art form, similar to wine-making.”
Kent Berry, barista instructor, at the Campus Blend Coffee Shop at Clary Sage College. Students will gain a basic understanding of all things coffee – the history, botany,
lingo, effects of caffeine on the body, brewing techniques, business and marketing aspects,
and much more, including tea and smoothie techniques. The three-week barista program consists of 65 program hours – 20 hours of theory and a 45-hour internship at the Campus Blend Coffee Shop at Clary Sage College, located at 3131 S. Sheridan in Tulsa. The program is a distance learning course; all of the theory portion can be completed online. This allows people from out of town – or even out of state – to complete the program. “In this case, we will work with the student to find a coffee shop in their city where they can complete the internship,” Kent adds. After graduating from the program, barista students will be able to prepare hand-crafted espresso beverages by properly grinding, dosing and tamping ground espresso, pulling the perfect shot and steaming the perfect milk; prepare frappe blended drinks and smoothies; grind and brew coffee using a variety of brewing techniques; be able to discuss and describe coffee by region or blend to help a customer find the perfect coffee for their taste; discuss the science of coffee from crop to cup; and discern coffee jargon. Kent’s personal love of coffee began early in life. His grandparents were restaurant owners, and as a child he was always fascinated by how their customers would sit and talk for hours over coffee. “These memories are how I came up with the name of my coffee blog
Page 27
– they were the ‘coffee mafia.’” (Check out Kent’s blog at clarysagecoffeemafia.com.) As a student at Texas Tech University in 2000, Kent’s enthusiasm for coffee resurged with the opening of a nearby Starbucks. He became a regular, and later worked as a store manager for the company for several years. “I developed a real passion for coffee. When the opportunity for a barista instructor opened at Clary Sage College, I knew it was a perfect fit for me.” Kent did extensive research to develop the curriculum for the barista program and wrote the theory portion of the course. As with all Community Care College and Clary Sage College programs, the barista program offers continuing education opportunities, as well as lifetime career services to graduates. The barista course is a cash-pay program with no financial aid dispensed, but payment plans are available. Classes start every Monday. Calling All Brides-to-Be The Tulsa Wedding Show – Glenpool will be held Sunday, April 29 at the Glenpool Conference Center from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
By Rodney Taylor The Tulsa Wedding Show announces their newest wedding show for Tulsa brides. This smaller, more intimate show will be at the new Glenpool Conference Center, south of Tulsa Hills Shopping Center on Highway 75, on Sunday, April 29, 2012 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Although The Tulsa Wedding Show produces a January wedding show with attendance of about 2,500 people, and a summer show, which has about 1,400 attendees, Vicki Taylor, producer, believes a spring show is needed also. With constant changes in wedding fashions, Vicki believes that her upcoming spring wedding show will be just what newly engaged brides are looking for – and she is shaking up her traditional wedding shows with the Glenpool event. The original Tulsa Wedding Show was designed to meet the needs of women who had a wedding to plan with little time to plan it. In 1993, there was a need to make life a little easier for Tulsa brides-to-be by bringing wedding merchants together in one place and creating an easy come-and-go shopping experience just for brides and their family and friends. Although some things have changed,
planning a wedding remains a hectic task. Brides still find themselves exhausted from calling, missing calls, making
appointments, driving around town, trying to round up family and friends, and coordinating schedules to meet here and then

Your ONE stop cooling supplier!
www.ValueNews.com go there – and that pace can last for months. At all Tulsa Wedding Show events, though, brides can relax and take care of everything in a few hours. The Tulsa Wedding Show in Glenpool will showcase a variety of wedding professionals, including reception facilities, photographers, caterers, photo booths, videographers, florists and venues. Best of all, they have a variety of price ranges so that there are choices for everyone. No matter the type or style of wedding each couple desires, from formal to informal and large to small budgets, brides will enjoy many options available in one place. All of the exhibitors are highly accommodating with agreements and down payments. Most merchants offer show-only specials, so brides should ask lots of questions. The latest trend in wedding planning is vintage weddings. There will be several vintage wedding specialists at the show, so talk to them to see if “vintage” is right for you. Exhibitors will have QR codes at their spaces to allow brides to scan information. Busy brides can quickly scan info about the exhibitor and use the saved time talking to the exhibitor. At the Glenpool event, brides will not have to wait for fashion shows. Attendees can view the latest bridal fashions with elegant displays in the glass-enclosed foyer. Unlike traditional fashion shows that some brides miss because of the crowds, this one will last the entire day. Beginning at 1 p.m., and then on the hour, brides will have a
chance to win a collection of exhibitor products, but you must be present to win. Prizes will also be announced by text message to the bride’s phone. You may purchase tickets online at www.thetulsaweddingshow.com for $8 before the show and $10 if purchased at the door. “There are several great wedding venues that could host our wedding show,” said Vicki, “but the Glenpool Conference Center addresses several things that we like.” First is location. It is located on Highway 75 at 121st Street South, so it has great accessibility. And, the center is easy to locate after exiting the highway. The Glenpool Conference Center has several hundred free parking spaces and an ultra-modern facility. Vicki encourages attendees to come to the show with an open mind. “This is your wedding and there will be plenty of new ideas that every couple can add to their plans to truly make it a unique event,” she says. “Some of the most talented and creative designers, florists, cake artists, wedding planners, gown designers, decorators, and accessory designers participate in the show. Expect to see lots of new, exciting and beautiful elements to make all the events surrounding your wedding as special as the two of you!”

Not All Vitamins Created Equal Riverbend Nutrition offers high-quality vitamins and mineral supplements made fresh in the onsite lab.

medical ailments, it is a very useful screening tool for nutritional needs, and the process takes only about an hour. Rose discusses the details of the DBA in detail with her clients, and the cost for this screening is $60. Riverbend also offers blood typing, iridology, blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screening. Rose will be happy to work with your healthcare provider to customize a nutritional plan for you. The great thing about buying directly from manufacturer is that Riverbend is able to offer the great prices and proprietary formulas that are not available anywhere else. Rose has custom blends to help with depression, appetite suppression and liver repair and immune support, just to name a few. The latest at Riverbend is the addition of Siera Strawser to the staff. Siera is Mike and Rose’s daughter. She graduated from OSU with a bachelor’s degree in nutritional science and allied health. Attending school on a soccer scholarship, Siera is now available for the fitness and diet needs of all athletes. She is presently pursuing her certification as a natural health professional (CNHP) and a dried blood analyst. Her goal is a master’s in the science of holistic health. “You will benefit from talking with Siera,” says Rose. “And for all you soccer players and fans, Google her!”

Nut-in Like a Good Antique and Craft Show
The Nut House will host their Antique and Craft Show April 28-29 as part of Destination Claremore week By Lorrie Ward April, 2012 will be a busy and exciting month for The Nut House. Easter is on April 8, and The Nut House is already bursting with a rainbow of brightly colored items, perfect for holiday decorating. The bustling, busy spring season will continue for Hazel Ward and staff, as they prepare for Destination Claremore’s Antique and Craft Show on Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29. The Nut House hosted The Antique and Craft Show for Destination Claremore last year, but this year, they are the actual sponsors of the event. “We are in the building stages of something that has great promise,” says Hazel. “We had an excellent turnout last year, but this year we would like to add more local flavor to this nostalgic event.” Hazel hopes to accomplish this by garnering more interest from area antique and craft dealers. “In the past, we’ve had antique dealers from out of state, but we would like to see more dealers from our Green Country area,” Hazel relates. “People want to feel they have a piece of
Oklahoma, Rogers County, or Claremore when they buy from this event.” Local flavor also includes a plethora of handcrafted items from local vendors, including tole paintings, crocheted and
embroidered items, jewelry, crafts, decorative items, and all kinds of odds and ends. “This event is actually designed to showcase handmade gift items from local artisans,” Hazel points out. “Last year, we had a
booth with gourds made into bird houses.” Plenty of booth space is still available for those who are interested, and applications will be taken until April 20. Application forms are available on the website at www.route66nuthouse.com. Hazel plans for booths to be outside, weather permitting, but plenty of inside space has been set aside should inclement conditions arise that weekend. Destination Claremore is a yearly, weeklong event sponsored by the Claremore Convention & Visitors Bureau, featuring fun
events for the whole family. Since The Nut House is located on the historic “Mother Road” between Claremore and Catoosa – and is a historic feature itself – it is the perfect spot for The Antique and Craft Show. The Nut House will of course be displaying its usual variety of nuts, gourmet food items, and gifts during the Antique and Craft Show. Hot Mama’s Deli will be serving up its delicious lunch fare for the event, with a full menu including sandwiches made from Boars Head Meat and Amish cheeses. Hazel hopes that some will want to sample the delectable dessert items they’ve added to the menu. With names like “Gooey Butter Cake” and “Knock Ya Naked Brownies,” these sweet delights need no further description. “Of course, we want people to come and see The Nut House and sample Hot Mama’s Deli,” says Hazel with a smile, “but the purpose of Destination Claremore is to get the word out about Claremore, Rogers County, and Route 66, and we are thrilled to be a part of that.”
