Bring the family out to Broken Arrow’s Rooster Days, the oldest festival in the state of Oklahoma! This year will commemorate the 82nd event and will be held May 10-12, 2013. Guests will enjoy lots of entertainment, free concerts, carnival rides, food, arts and crafts, a parade, a 5K run, and much more. Rooster Days is a premiere family-friendly event. Rooster Days kicks off Friday evening at Central Park on South Main. As always, Rooster Days will be bringing area residents fantastic live entertainment, including The Kristin Nicole Band, Red Dirt Rangers, Kinsey Saddler, Brandon Clark Band and Tulsa

Bradio. The 3rd annual Rooster Days Run will start at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 10 beginning at the Central Park pool. Route options include a 1 Mile Fun Run and a 5K Run/Walk. Go online to pre-register or enter at the event site the evening of the run. The Rooster Days Parade begins Saturday at 10 a.m. at College and Main Streets, and proceeds south on historic Main Street to the Broken Arrow Community Center. Both sides of Main will be flooded with spectators of all ages, with kids arriving early to ensure “front row curb seats” as they eagerly receive candy provided by parade

entrants. One of the anticipated highlights of the Rooster Days Parade is a gathering of the “Bands of Broken Arrow,” recognized nationwide for their superior and dynamic bands. Be sure to join the fun on Main Street Saturday morning to take in all the floats, bands, antique cars and more. Rides, food vendors, arts and crafts, and live music begin as the parade ends. The Rooster Days Miss Chick Contest will be held Saturday, May 11 at 1:30 p.m. on the Main Stage. The contest consists of an interview, answering a question on stage, and modeling an evening gown in front of judges and spectators. (continued on page 28)

Since opening BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center in 2010, founders Malissa Spacek and Dr. James Campbell have wondered what to do with the bare plot of land they own directly adjacent to the building. Malissa, a master gardener who has a true passion for using her green thumb, came up with the idea to use the plot for a community garden, with crops that would be donated to those in need in the community. BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is proud to announce that their community garden is now in bloom, and the first set of crops is expected to be shared with Broken Arrow residents by the end of May. All fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs will be donated to Arms Around BA (located directly across from BA Med Spa) and to Broken Arrow Neighbors. People in need who get groceries from food banks typically receive non-perishable items, and the community garden will be an excellent resource to supplement their diets with healthy veggies, fruits

and herbs. A total of 48 items have been planted so far, including potatoes, onions, lettuce, strawberries, carrots, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, turnips, tomatoes and cucumbers. “Essentially if it can grow, we are planting it!” says Malissa. Though the garden had been in Malissa’s mind for quite

some time, the idea did not spring into action until she happened to run into Joe Wilkinson, a talented local landscape architect who hosts fundraisers for churches and other organizations to create food-producing community gardens. From that point on, the idea went full speed ahead.

SSaving Lives One Net at a Time The vision of two Tulsa women is saving children in Ghana by protecting them from malaria. By Duane Blankenship Kairos 10 was founded in 2010 as a result of medical mission trips and a desire to treat children with malaria. Founders of the organization are Dr. David and Phyllis Morris and Charles and Katheryn Pennington, all of Tulsa. “Malaria kills one in six children in Africa and is preventable with a mosquito net,” said Katheryn. The highest death rates occur in children under the age of five and pregnant women. Each net costs $12 in U.S. currency. The nets are purchased from and shipped by His Nets, a not-for-profit, located in Norman, Oklahoma. Kairos employs a team of Ghanaian women who make beautiful handcrafted bracelets and other jewelry with beads purchased from local merchants representing native regions. Beads are produced from recycled glass, vinyl records, fish bones and brass. “Kairos pays beaders four times the average daily wage,” said Katheryn, “a sustainable income that enables our beaders to provide for their families while helping eliminate malaria and the often resulting death caused by a mosquito bite.” Kairos also has a line of handmade shawls and purses.

Kairos 10 Founders Katheryn Pennington and Phyllis Morris meet with Kairos beaders. Behind the driving force of Katheryn and Phyllis, entire communities are aided. Since its beginnings in 2010, Kairos has directed the shipping of nets to four countries – Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and India – and has sold more than 18,000 pieces of jewelry. For every item sold, Kairos is able to purchase one insecticide-treated mosquito net, which will cover four or more

sleeping children and family members. To date, 15,000 nets have been distributed to villages by a partnering Ghana church. The head of the church knows which villages need nets and gets them promptly delivered upon their arrival. “If we can cover 75 percent of the huts within a village,” said Phyllis, “we are able to eradicate 95 percent of the malaria-carrying insects.”

According to the World Health Organization, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria in 2010 and a resulting 660,000 deaths. Most deaths occur among children living in Africa, where a child dies every minute from malaria. Malaria is caused by a parasite that is spread to people through the bites of infected anopheles mosquitoes. They bite mainly between dusk and dawn, which is why it is so critical that children be covered by netting when they sleep. Ninety percent of the world’s malaria deaths are in Africa. There are currently no licensed vaccines against it or any other human parasite. Four fifth-grade classes in Jenks focused their efforts on Ghana villages where malaria was an epidemic and determined they wanted to help fund the purchase of mosquito nets. The students raised enough money to “net a village.” They also purchased soccer balls to donate to a Ghanaian school. They designed a T-shirt to promote the project, “Fight the Bite – Net a Village, Save a Life.” These students saw firsthand how their efforts could impact a child’s life on the other side of the world.

Registered participants in the Kids Bowl Free program receive coupons via email each Sunday to bowl two free games per day, every day – no strings attached. “This is our fourth year for the program, and last year alone we had 5,000 children registered to bowl free,” says Michelle Engelby, general manager of Broken Arrow Lanes. “This is a great national program to really get kids excited about bowling. Bowling is a fun, healthy activity that families can do together.” A Family Pass option is available also. For

Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. “We have seen a lot of bowling centers go under in this area, but Broken Arrow Lanes has remained successful because Andy truly knows the bowling business and the importance of always innovating and improving,” says Michelle. FFostering Hope Choices for Life will show appreciation to its foster parents with a dinner banquet on May 9 at First Baptist Church to celebrate National Foster Care Month. They take in children from abusive or neglectful situations who require therapy for medical or psychological conditions, and they stick with these kids to provide them the love and care that many have never known. Foster parents with Choices for Life Foster Care in Sapulpa give of themselves 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But on Thursday, May 9, they will be on the receiving end of a special appreciation banquet. As part of National Foster Care Month in May, Choices for Life will honor all of its foster parents. The dinner will be held at First Baptist Church in Sapulpa and gives the foster parents an opportunity to get all dolled up and enjoy a night out for themselves while Choices for Life therapists watch the kids. The appreciation dinner not only recognizes the generosity and commitment of foster parents, but also raises awareness about the need for more families who are willing to open their homes and hearts to these children.

Raising children is hard enough, but therapeutic needs create a whole new dynamic. Unlike traditional foster care, Choices for Life focuses on

children with a higher level of emotional and behavioral needs. Not everyone can provide the patience, love, strength and open mind that are needed, but many

individuals and families feel a real calling. According to Maria Carter of Choices for Life, they are currently in desperate need of foster parents to care for local children. The process of becoming a foster parent includes 13 weeks of free training, in which treatment families learn to create opportunities for their foster child to heal and grow. The goal typically is for the child to return to his or her biological family, with the interpersonal and behavioral skills to become a positive and accomplished adult. Each child is carefully

evaluated and matched with a strong and stable foster family that will integrate that child not only into their family, but also into their community, school and church. It takes a unique person or family to open their hearts to these children. Those who were up to the challenge say it is one of the most thrilling and rewarding experiences in their lives, as they watch a troubled child blossom into a loving and responsible individual. All children — including the 408,000 American children and youth in foster care — deserve a safe, happy life. Young people in foster care especially need nurturing adults on their side because their own families are in crisis and unable to care for them. Outdoor Soccer Returns to Tulsa The Tulsa Athletics’ first game will be at the original Driller’s Stadium at 15th and Yale on Saturday, May 18.

By Sheryl Sowell On July 13, 1985, the Tulsa Roughnecks of the North American Soccer League played their final match at the original Driller’s Stadium at 15th and Yale. On May 18, 2013, the Tulsa Athletics will take that same field as outdoor soccer finally makes its return to Tulsa. When the NASL and the Tulsa Roughnecks ceased to be,

several players stayed in the Tulsa area, remaining active in the soccer community which they had helped create. Their bond with the community is still evident today as thousands of athletes have played under their tutelage. Tulsa is revered across the country as a soccer city, with our youth clubs being some of the

most talented and competitive. However, there has been a gap at the top adult level since 1985. This summer, the journey back to the top of the soccer map begins. “When support meets ambition, only success can follow in soccer,” said team co-owner Sonny Dalesandro. Tulsans have an unrivaled passion for the game of soccer,

so much so that several attempts have been made to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to our city. This is the Tulsa Athletics’ goal as well, one step at a time. Rekindling the love that Tulsa has for the game at its highest level is the first priority. Four of the newer, yet most successful clubs in MLS are teams that played in lower divisions, and because of incredible fan support made the jump to the MLS. This is the Tulsa Athletics’ ultimate goal. This summer will be Tulsa Athletics’ inaugural season in the National Premiere Soccer League, the largest league in the United States, with 61 teams competing across the country. It is the perfect league for a new ambitious franchise to start its journey towards returning Tulsa to the forefront of the soccer map in America. Co-owner Sonny Dalesandro was the youngest Oklahoman to play professionally when he debuted for Tulsa’s USISL franchise in 1995. Dalesandro won “Rookie of the Year” that season and went on to have a six-year career, playing for the Milwaukee Wave and the Wichita Wings. “Some of my very earliest memories are of Skelly Stadium and the Tulsa Roughnecks, and today’s youth deserve that same impression that I was afforded.” Dr. Tommy Kern, co-owner of the Tulsa Athletics and a sports medicine physician for Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center, grew up playing soccer in Tulsa and went on to play at

Brown University prior to medical school at the University of Oklahoma. “We are excited to bring high-level soccer back to Tulsa to match the quality of the youth programs.” Joey Ryan, head coach of the Tulsa Athletics, has been coaching since the mid-80s after having played professionally in the American Soccer League, the NASL, and indoor in the MISL. Ryan was also an NCAA division 1 champion with the legendary, undefeated Hartwick College team of 1977. Ryan has coached at the youth, high school, semi-pro and professional level in New York, New Jersey and Oklahoma. “My staff and I are extremely excited to be a part of the resurrection of both outdoor soccer in Tulsa and the old Drillers Stadium at Expo Square and look forward to many entertaining, successful games being played there. An exciting and unique art show is scheduled throughout the month of May to promote MS awareness and Bike MS 2013.

By Duane Blankenship Each year the National MS Society Oklahoma hosts a variety of special fundraising events for the purpose of raising awareness about multiple sclerosis. Funds raised help support programs and services available to Oklahomans with this disease. Programs provide knowledge, recreation, family and social support, and awareness throughout the greater Tulsa community. The annual signature event of the National MS Society is Bike MS, and 2013 marks its 28th anniversary in Oklahoma. Bike MS is not “just a bike ride,” but an experience for all who participate in the event. It is one of the best supported cycling events in our state. The two-day Bike MS 2013 will commence September 21 from the Agri Civic Center in Chandler and finish there the next day. Nearly 1,000 riders will join forces to raise money. Although Bike MS is a challenging event, riders return year after year, supporting the movement to create a world free of MS. A unique awareness campaign began three years ago in Tulsa to inform residents about the disease, local fundraising efforts, and the

annual Bike MS. This year will mark the third annual Art Bike Tulsa, which coincides with Tulsa International Mayfest in downtown Tulsa. Art Bike Tulsa will run May 1-31 at the YMCA of Greater Tulsa located at 418 S. Main. The event will be open to the public Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the entire month of May. Art Bike Tulsa will also be on display at Tulsa International Airport from June 1 through September 30. The presenting sponsor is SCFM Compression Systems. Art Bike Tulsa is an exciting, unusual, fun display of art made entirely of old bicycle parts. The unique explosion of creativeness is one that your entire family will enjoy. This year’s exhibit will include works of art from successful local artists and student artists from Union, Broken Arrow, and Booker T. Washington High Schools. Some of the featured Tulsa artists include Michael Christopher, Robin Green Tilly, Billie Sue Thompson and Jan McKay. Jan has been an MS volunteer for 23 years and has participated in Bike MS for 20 years. “I ride in honor

of my good friend, Rhonda Fletcher, who was diagnosed with MS 23 years ago.” Jan loves riding for the cause and has been blessed with meeting many great people along Bike MS routes. “I wish no one had to endure MS,” says Jan. “I feel good aiding in fundraising efforts to assist others.” Rhonda Fletcher volunteers at the MS Society office once or twice a week. “I am appreciative of the riders who endure Bike MS each year for me and others who have been diagnosed with MS,” she said. When first diagnosed, Rhonda went into denial. “My good friend Jan literally bugged me for years to get involved with the organization.” When Rhonda finally did, she was impressed by every person she met and was touched that they were doing so much for her and others. motto. She was happy that Master Barber DeAllen Brown decided to remain at the salon, and she set about adding a staff of qualified and caring stylists, including Stephanie Dawn Ritter, Shaela Fleig, Laurenn Williams, Audrey Loney, and Troy Edmonds. Troy’s wife, Debbie, also joined the team as nail technician. Everyone on

staff has years of experience. Troy, for example, has worked as a stylist for 40 years and Debbie, his spouse of almost 30 years, has been doing nails for 27 years. Both Troy and Debbie have maintained a solid clientele over their tenure of service. All stylists participate in continuing education as well, which is important in an industry with ever-changing trends and advancing techniques. One popular service right now is the Brazilian Blowout, a hair smoothing treatment that eliminates frizz – a common complaint in Oklahoma’s humid climate. Also available for those with curl and frizz problems is Keratin Smoothing. These two techniques can be performed for short or long term results. Nicole reports that the Keratin Smoothing treatments last anywhere from four to six weeks. “People are having their color and highlights done and then the Keratin treatments,” Nicole notes. “It’s best to do it this way, so that the Keratin treatment seals the color into the hair.” Nicole’s reputation as an esthetician is as solid as the reputations of her stylists, but since she will not sing her own praises, Nail Technician Debbie Edmonds does it for her. “All of my clients who go to Nicole for skin care love her,” says Debbie. “She’s got that touch.” Debbie herself recently visited Nicole for a few sessions of MicroPhototherapy and saw dramatic results after just one treatment. “When I was done, I

Davis all bring fame to Claremore and visitors from around the world. Cowboys, Grammy Award winners, astronauts, and gun collectors, now champion noodler? Kaleb Summers, Claremore native, and team STOadventures, won the 2012 OKIE Noodling Tournament in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. He has worn many hats in his young life, including graduate of Oklahoma State University, boxer, steer wrestler, hunting and fishing guide, and part of the blasting team in his family’s construction business, so adding noodler to his resume comes naturally. Possibly a like-character to Will Rogers, only his tricks are with flathead catfish and not with ropes, Kaleb’s home is the outdoors of northeastern Oklahoma. His noodling experience started in southeast Oklahoma when a friend took him fishing and he soon learned how to decipher between fish holes and beaver holes, while studying the tricks to find the flatheads. Wikipedia defines noodling as fishing for catfish using only

bare hands, practiced primarily in the southern United States. A noodler places his hand inside a discovered catfish hole. Other sources, such as urbandictionary.com, describe it as a crazy person using their fingers as bait to catch a catfish. Kaleb is not “crazy” but is an avid hunter and fisherman whose life has revolved around the preservation of a fading lifestyle that once used to be the norm. “To release a trophy fish reveals a rather strong kind of character, for as sportsmen, we sometimes owe it to our quarry to live to fight another day. After all, the true thrill lies solely in the fight underwater,” says Kaleb. It was a big fight in June of 2012 when Kaleb and his team fought a flathead weighing over 70 pounds (70.46 to be exact) and won the tournament. Their winning fish was the largest on record for the 14-year event. GGet Hip to Dr. LaButti Patient Kathy Hill is pain-free after her successful hip replacement. By Joshua Danker-Dake In 2012, Kathy Hill, of Tulsa, had her right hip replaced by Dr. Ronald LaButti. “I’d had my left hip replaced in 2003,” Kathy says. “I dealt with the pain and discomfort in my right hip for about two years, until the symptoms were as bad as they’d been in my other hip. It hurt so badly that I didn’t want to go anywhere or do anything.” By this point, Kathy’s hip was bone-on-bone. “I couldn’t even get my shoe on or get in or out of my car without excruciating pain,” she says. “I was having trouble working every day because of the pain medicine I’d been taking, and I had stomach problems and heartburn all the time.” Her primary care physician recommended she see Dr. LaButti. “He took me seriously and he listened to me, which I really appreciated,” says Kathy. “And he didn’t make me wait for surgery – he scheduled me right away for a total hip replacement.” Dr. LaButti helped Kathy through a recovery that was initially very difficult, she says.

“My recovery was slow and very painful for the first couple of weeks. I was on a walker for six weeks and couldn’t put all my weight on my right foot. I did therapy at home for the first six weeks, I was back at work fulltime after eight weeks, and I did an additional four weeks of therapy once I was back to work. Dr. LaButti told me, step-by-step, what to expect – I did everything he told me to, and everything went just as he said. And his nurse was awesome – I could call and explain whatever was going on, and she would get right back with me.” Kathy says she was impressed with her experience with Dr. LaButti and his office at every stage. “Everyone at his office was very professional and considerate – they knew I was in a lot of pain and needed to be seen as soon as possible, and I never had to wait long at all for my appointments. After the surgery, Dr. LaButti checked on me every morning and addressed all my concerns. And when I got to my room, his office had already sent flowers, which was

really thoughtful.” Kathy recommends Dr. LaButti. “He took care of my pain. I don’t take any pain medicine now, and I don’t walk with any kind of a limp. I can put my shoes on now and get in and out of my car with no problem, and people who don’t know me would never know I’ve had a hip replacement, much less both hips replaced.” Kathy works for the Tulsa County Election Board. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, working in the yard, and enjoying nature and the woods. Summer Day Camp is open for children going into kindergarten through fifth grades and sixth through eighth grades. Exciting program activities include archery, swimming, team sports, inflatable games, arts and crafts, field trips, special guests, Vacation Bible School, music and more. Applications for “Amazing GRace” Summer Day Camp may be obtained at the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club located at 1400 W. Washington in Broken Arrow. When you fill out an application, you will be required to make a $5 deposit for each week your child will be attending. This $5 reserves their spot and will be deducted from the weekly fee. There is also a $45 registration fee that pays for a 12-month membership to the Boys & Girls Club plus a T-shirt. Weekly fees for camp are due each Monday morning of camp. Children must be registered by the week; they will not be permitted to attend by the day. Program participation is limited in order to assure quality

standards, so don’t delay – make your child’s reservation now. Applications are accepted until the program is full. Please remember that a copy of immunization shot records must be provided for each child. Parents and guardians must sign children in and out each day of camp. You may not simply drop them off at the front sidewalk. Here’s the daily schedule for camp: from 7 to 9 a.m. campers arrive and engage in sports and game room activities. (All campers must be signed in by 9. If they miss the 9 a.m. sign-in time, they will not be accepted at camp until after 1 p.m.) Assembly for all campers is at 9 a.m. and scheduled activities are from 9 to 12 p.m. Campers will break for lunch from 12 to 1 p.m. and each is expected to bring a sack lunch with his or her name on it. There will be a concession with cold drinks and snacks. Since there is no microwave at camp, please pack lunches that are ready to eat. Note that fast food lunches will be available each Wednesday at a cost of $5 per child. From 1 to 4:30 p.m., swimming and organized activities will be

scheduled. The pool and gym will be closed at 5 p.m. and students will engage in outside activities or be allowed in the game room until 6. A $10 late fee will be assessed if a child is not picked up from camp by 6 p.m. Campers should wear clothing that is comfortable for physical activities. A swimsuit and towel should be brought from home and kept in a small gym bag with the camper’s name on it. Campers should not bring toys or valuables and no cell phones or electronic games will be permitted. The camp will provide special days for electronics. Most field trips are optional. There is a fee for some of the field trips, which may be paid with cash or check.
