Bring the family out to Broken Arrow’s Rooster Days, the oldest festival in the state of Oklahoma! This year will commemorate the 82nd event and will be held May 10-12, 2013. Guests will enjoy lots of entertainment, free concerts, carnival rides, food, arts and crafts, a parade, a 5K run, and much more. Rooster Days is a premiere family-friendly event. Rooster Days kicks off Friday evening at Central Park on South Main. As always, Rooster Days will be bringing area residents fantastic live entertainment, including The Kristin Nicole Band, Red Dirt Rangers, Kinsey Saddler, Brandon Clark Band and Tulsa

Bradio. The 3rd annual Rooster Days Run will start at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 10 beginning at the Central Park pool. Route options include a 1 Mile Fun Run and a 5K Run/Walk. Go online to pre-register or enter at the event site the evening of the run. The Rooster Days Parade begins Saturday at 10 a.m. at College and Main Streets, and proceeds south on historic Main Street to the Broken Arrow Community Center. Both sides of Main will be flooded with spectators of all ages, with kids arriving early to ensure “front row curb seats” as they eagerly receive candy provided by parade

entrants. One of the anticipated highlights of the Rooster Days Parade is a gathering of the “Bands of Broken Arrow,” recognized nationwide for their superior and dynamic bands. Be sure to join the fun on Main Street Saturday morning to take in all the floats, bands, antique cars and more. Rides, food vendors, arts and crafts, and live music begin as the parade ends. The Rooster Days Miss Chick Contest will be held Saturday, May 11 at 1:30 p.m. on the Main Stage. The contest consists of an interview, answering a question on stage, and modeling an evening gown in front of judges and spectators. (continued on page 28)

BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center will donate crops from its new community garden to Arms Around BA and Broken Arrow Neighbors, two non-profit organizations that help disadvantaged residents.

By Sheryl Sowell

Since opening BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center in 2010, founders Malissa Spacek and Dr. James Campbell have wondered what to do with the bare plot of land they own directly adjacent to the building. Malissa, a master gardener who has a true passion for using her green thumb, came up with the idea to use the plot for a community garden, with crops that would be donated to those in need in the community. BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is proud to announce that their community garden is now in bloom, and the first set of crops is expected to be shared with Broken Arrow residents by the end of May. All fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs will be donated to Arms Around BA (located directly across from BA Med Spa) and to Broken Arrow Neighbors. People in need who get groceries from food banks typically receive non-perishable items, and the community garden will be an excellent resource to supplement their diets with healthy veggies, fruits

and herbs. A total of 48 items have been planted so far, including potatoes, onions, lettuce, strawberries, carrots, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, turnips, tomatoes and cucumbers. “Essentially if it can grow, we are planting it!” says Malissa. Though the garden had been in Malissa’s mind for quite

some time, the idea did not spring into action until she happened to run into Joe Wilkinson, a talented local landscape architect who hosts fundraisers for churches and other organizations to create food-producing community gardens. From that point on, the idea went full speed ahead.

Malissa’s son, Samm Spacek, is the community garden’s project manager, and volunteers include Britt Radford, Kirby Jarolim, Marwin Kemp, Melody Spacek, James Cole and Meg Sutherland. “This garden is truly a labor of love,” said Meg, who is also the marketing director of BA Med Spa. “Some of the

Ultherapy uses ultrasound to lift, tone and tighten the skin. It is FDA approved for the face, neck and brow. Ultherapy targets the deep foundation below the skin-typically addressed in cosmetic surgery - without cutting or disrupting the skin’s surface. Ultherapy stimulates the body’s own natural collagen building process. With just one treatment, Ultherapy initiates the lifting process which builds gradually over two to three months and continues to improve over time. Ultherapy is a compelling option for people with mild to moderate skin laxity as well as those wanting to “stay ahead of the game” or those looking to prolong the effects of cosmetic surgery. Love the skin you’re in and call us today for a complimentary consultation.

SSay Goodbye to Unwanted Hair Emerge Medical Day Spa will offer a free informational class on laser hair removal on Thursday, May 23. By Sheryl Sowell Most people will agree – shaving or waxing unwanted body hair is frustrating, time-consuming, and a big hassle. And no one wants razor burn or stubble! For those who are considering trying something different to deal with this hairy issue, Emerge Medical Day Spa will host a free informational class on laser hair removal procedures on Thursday, May 23 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The class will cover everything you need to know about laser hair removal, including the risks and benefits, Emerge’s

competitive pricing and package deals, eligible skin types and more. The class will be led by Kelley Tompkins, Taryn Schell and Belinda Stewart and will feature demonstrations, before and after photos, a question and answer session, and treatment giveaways and discounts. Refreshments will be served. Register for your spot online at www.emergemedicaldayspa.com or call (918) 392-8606. hair removal department. They use one laser for hair removal, and one laser only – the Candela GentleLASE. Taryn Schell has been performing laser hair removal procedures for the past 11 years. “There is no better laser for hair removal on the market,” she explains. “So many other lasers simply don’t work. With this machine, you do not need several treatments before you see results. Candela’s alexandrite long pulse technology produces unbelievable results.” According to Kelley Tompkins, director of Emerge Medical Day Spa, the two biggest fears people have about laser hair removal are 1) pain and 2) cost. She explains, however, that these worries are unnecessary – it is not a painful procedure, and it is much more affordable than many people realize, particularly if they purchase package deals. “Candela’s cooling device shoots a cold mist onto the skin before the laser, assuring no messy gels,” says Kelley. “And our prices are very competitive.” The Candela GentleLASE treats pigmented hair on all areas of the body, and may be used on most skin types. “The Candela

GentleLASE really targets dark stubble. The three spot sizes allow me to remove hair in delicate areas without damaging the skin, such as for a true Brazilian,” says Taryn. “In addition to permanent hair removal, the Candela laser boosts collagen and smoothes skin.” Permanent laser hair removal generally requires five to ten treatments total. For facial hair, treatments are performed every four to six weeks. Underarm and bikini area treatment cycles are about six weeks apart. For backs, legs and shoulders, treatments are performed every eight weeks. It is important to stay out of the sun and tanning beds two to three weeks before and after treatments. Each treatment lasts from about 15 minutes (such as for lip and chin areas) to about an hour (for larger areas such as the bikini area). “We take the time to pamper our clients, and our services are very personalized. Because our clients return for several treatments, we are able to establish close relationships with them,” says Kelley. One of Emerge’s newest

SSaving Lives One Net at a Time The vision of two Tulsa women is saving children in Ghana by protecting them from malaria. By Duane Blankenship Kairos 10 was founded in 2010 as a result of medical mission trips and a desire to treat children with malaria. Founders of the organization are Dr. David and Phyllis Morris and Charles and Katheryn Pennington, all of Tulsa. “Malaria kills one in six children in Africa and is preventable with a mosquito net,” said Katheryn. The highest death rates occur in children under the age of five and pregnant women. Each net costs $12 in U.S. currency. The nets are purchased from and shipped by His Nets, a not-for-profit, located in Norman, Oklahoma. Kairos employs a team of Ghanaian women who make beautiful handcrafted bracelets and other jewelry with beads purchased from local merchants representing native regions. Beads are produced from recycled glass, vinyl records, fish bones and brass. “Kairos pays beaders four times the average daily wage,” said Katheryn, “a sustainable income that enables our beaders to provide for their families while helping eliminate malaria and the often resulting death caused by a mosquito bite.” Kairos also has a line of handmade shawls and purses.

Kairos 10 Founders Katheryn Pennington and Phyllis Morris meet with Kairos beaders. Behind the driving force of Katheryn and Phyllis, entire communities are aided. Since its beginnings in 2010, Kairos has directed the shipping of nets to four countries – Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and India – and has sold more than 18,000 pieces of jewelry. For every item sold, Kairos is able to purchase one insecticide-treated mosquito net, which will cover four or more

sleeping children and family members. To date, 15,000 nets have been distributed to villages by a partnering Ghana church. The head of the church knows which villages need nets and gets them promptly delivered upon their arrival. “If we can cover 75 percent of the huts within a village,” said Phyllis, “we are able to eradicate 95 percent of the malaria-carrying insects.”

According to the World Health Organization, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria in 2010 and a resulting 660,000 deaths. Most deaths occur among children living in Africa, where a child dies every minute from malaria. Malaria is caused by a parasite that is spread to people through the bites of infected anopheles mosquitoes. They bite mainly between dusk and dawn, which is why it is so critical that children be covered by netting when they sleep. Ninety percent of the world’s malaria deaths are in Africa. There are currently no licensed vaccines against it or any other human parasite. Four fifth-grade classes in Jenks focused their efforts on Ghana villages where malaria was an epidemic and determined they wanted to help fund the purchase of mosquito nets. The students raised enough money to “net a village.” They also purchased soccer balls to donate to a Ghanaian school. They designed a T-shirt to promote the project, “Fight the Bite – Net a Village, Save a Life.” These students saw firsthand how their efforts could impact a child’s life on the other side of the world.

Life-saving Kairos bracelets from Ghana are available in Tulsa at Donna’s Fashions and Pizzazzy Monograms, Liv a Little Boutique in Jenks, The Village Shop in Pryor, and Crossing Bookstore in Oklahoma City. All U.S. participants (excluding retail locations) are volunteers, and no person is compensated for their time or talents. To date, there are 60 Kairos volunteers across the country who sell the products. They receive no compensation for their efforts except the satisfaction of knowing they are saving the lives of children with each item sold. Kairos’ proceeds provide malaria-eradicating mosquito nets plus funding for digging water wells, building pole barns for schools, and providing the drug, Coartem, to treat those contracting malaria. Please call (918) 695-6949 or visit www.kairos10.com for more information on how you can purchase bracelets, become a volunteer, and help save the lives of African children. TTime for Spring Cleaning Lucas Premier Cleaning provides residential and commercial cleaning “the old-fashioned way.” By Duane Blankenship Owner Maggie Reyes started her business, Lucas Premier Cleaning, four years ago. “I’ve always been good at cleaning homes and businesses,” says Maggie, “and it’s something I really enjoy doing.” Maggie moved to Tulsa six years ago and after a couple of stints in the corporate world decided that she wanted to do something she knew would make her happy – starting her own cleaning company. Business is better now than ever, especially since Lucas Premier Cleaning partnered with AAA (Automobile Association of America) in Tulsa. Customers already utilizing the services of Lucas Premier Cleaning suggested that AAA partner up with Maggie and offer cleaning services as a “member deal.” You, AAA member or not, can benefit from Maggie’s experience in both residential and commercial cleaning. Lucas Premier Cleaning has several two-person crews that are trained to clean “the old-fashioned way,” according to Maggie. Their basic principle is based on cleaning your house or business as though it were their own. “Even when I

walk into my own home,” said Maggie, “I want to feel like I’m a guest. So the services and quality of work we provide really start with me and my employees.” Maggie says she listens to customers to find out exactly what they expect in order to truly enjoy and appreciate their homes. “We want each customer to feel comfortable and confident that they can go out and do whatever they want to do while their home is being thoroughly cleaned,” said Maggie. “We are licensed, bonded and insured, and all employees wear the Lucas Premier Cleaning uniform when on the job.” Lucas Premier Cleaning offers much more than a new level of cleaning. True, their attention to detail and quality has made them a number one choice throughout the Tulsa metro area, but they have also customized other programs to meet the needs of customers. “Our hard-working crew members arrive on time, are extremely courteous, and respect your privacy. We are always clean and well-spoken, and our work is 100 percent satisfaction

guaranteed,” added Maggie. The company offers daily, weekly, bi-weekly and monthly services. Some of their services include spring cleaning, garage cleaning and organization, closet

cleaning, deep cleaning, and move-in or move-out cleaning. They also specialize in sanitation, window cleaning and carpet restoration. They clean offices, warehouses, banks, churches,

apartments and schools, and provide new construction cleanup. Services also include landscape creation and maintenance, debris removal, and year-round maintenance such as weed control and fertilization, lawn care and mowing, tree and shrub care, and more. “We also like to celebrate with you,” says Maggie, “with one of our special packages that include birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, weddings, thank you and get well packages.” The packages offer everything from cleaning the house to flowers to making arrangements for dinner out at the restaurant of your choosing. Lucas Premier Cleaning is far more than just a cleaning company. You may call them for an over-the-phone estimate or a representative will come to your home or business to meet with you to discuss your specific requirements and expectations. Estimates are free. SSomething Bugging You? Bug Force sells products that are tested and proven to keep bed bugs (and others) from biting. By Duane Blankenship Bug Force owner Darryl Grimm sells Greenway Formula 7 products at a Tulsa business location and online. The Greenway Formula 7 product line was developed by a native Oklahoman and is a formulated all-natural spray that is safe for the environment, with no harmful chemicals added. “Formula 7 was originally developed and tested to be 100 percent effective in killing bed bug eggs, larvae and small bed bugs within 24 hours and teen and adult bed bugs within 48 hours,” said Grimm. “The product was tested by the OSU Entomology Department.” Personal experiences have shown Formula 7 to be effective on other insects as well. Five basic products are available for both commercial and consumer use. They are sold at Tail Waggers Pet Supplies in the Fontana Shopping Center at 51st and Memorial in Tulsa. You will find additional information and may also make purchases online at www.bugforce.biz. “New customers often ask if Formula 7 is FDA and EPA approved,” said Grimm. “Each

product was lab tested and proven to be all-natural. They contain no chemicals or pesticides and are exempt from FDA and EPA registration. The agencies said there was no need for testing because they contain nothing harmful to the environment and are EPA Title 25b Exempt Registered by Oklahoma Department of Agriculture.” The original product was Greenway Formula 7 Bed Bug Solution. It’s an all-natural bed bug spray that has been proven to be 100 percent effective in killing bed bugs. Multiple container sizes, including a 3.3-ounce size that is easy to carry along whenever you travel, are available. Formula 7 Tick and Flea Spray ensures peace of mind when you spray a pet because it has no harmful chemicals and it kills fleas and ticks. “The application process is very easy and doesn’t require much product,” says Grimm. “It is very cost effective – only about $2 a month to treat your dog or cat – compared to products containing harmful chemicals. Once

applied, the product lasts about 14 days unless your pet is bathed or groomed.” The Household Formula 7 Spray is an ideal solution for homeowners, property owners and management personnel for common pest control. It has a 30-day residual effect that kills and repels insects. It has been field tested by customers and has been effective in killing spiders, ants, crickets, wasps and scorpions. These are not claims by Daryl Grimm, Bug Force, or the manufacturer. It is information noted and received from customers as they have used Greenway Formula 7 products. Greenway Formula 7 Rancher has proven effective in keeping flies and other insects off horses, cows and goats. It, too, is cost effective when compared to competitive products. Last in the lineup is a personal product, Formula 7 Bug Repellent. “I think it’s good advice to avoid the possible side effects of repellents containing diethyltoluamide (DEET),” said Grimm. “They are chemical pesticides.” He recommends that you “go green” with the Formula

This product is great for campers, hikers, bikers, gardeners, hunters and fishermen. “You can also use it on children because it contains no harmful pesticides and is chemical free.” It keeps biting flies, gnats, mosquitoes, ticks, and many other insects away when you’re outdoors. Simplifying Plumbing Problems Robertson Plumbing Supply at 43rd and Mingo is where plumbing professionals and homeowners shop.

By Duane Blankenship “Robertson Plumbing Supply has the largest inventory of repair parts in the state,” says owner Eric Danels. “The Romans might have commercialized plumbing, but if they were located in Oklahoma, they’d be coming to Robertson for repair parts.”

“Advice is always free,” says Leroy Martin, who has been advising professional plumbers and homeowners and selling plumbing parts for nearly 40 years.

The company is a landmark known for having supplies that go back to the 1920s. As plumbing parts specialist Leroy Martin puts it, “We like to show our customers how to do a job whenever they get stumped by a plumbing project, and we generally have the parts they need in stock.” Even on the rare occasion when a part is not in stock, Leroy can order it and generally have it ready for pick up the next day. If you ever experience a plumbing problem, Leroy or one of the other Robertson Supply parts specialists is always eager to serve you. “Advice is always free,” says Leroy, “and we have solutions for your plumbing challenges.” Leroy has been selling plumbing parts for nearly 40 years. Robertson Supply has been serving residents of the Tulsa metro area for 35 years and has been at their current location at Mingo and 43rd Street for four years. Prior to that, they were located on Admiral. Eric says Robertson Supply is on the leading edge of plumbing technology. Today’s communication network has

made it really simple for customers to explain any plumbing problem they experience; they can even take a quick photo of a part and send it to Robertson Supply. The staff will then discuss any problem with the customer and make recommendations to successfully complete the project. And customers don’t even have to come to the store except to pick up the part or materials. “Save time and money,” says Eric, “and check with Robertson first. Odds are you’re going to come here anyway after you’ve spent a day running all over town.” Eric says he focuses on educating customers and the general public about the differences between wholesale plumbing products and retail products. “You’re going to find that wholesale products and parts are better quality, will last longer, and it will be easier to find replacement parts if and when they are needed.” Robertson Plumbing Supply carries the most popular brands and genuine OEM replacement parts. Even if you need a replacement product for an older

home upgrade or renovation, they can help you get the proper one. They carry an inventory of kitchen, bathroom, and outdoor faucet products and parts, and the storeroom is full of valves, toilet flappers, supply line hoses, and many other plumbing items. They also carry Shark Bite fittings, enabling the professional or homeowner to make repairing a water line a simpler task. If you need to re-pipe an entire home or business, Robertson Supply will even do detailed drawings and supply you with a complete materials list. The employees of Robertson Supply are experts in plumbing, heating and air, and electrical. They carry many makes and models you’re

familiar with including Delta, Kohler, Union Brass and T&S Brass, plus a huge warehouse of parts. “We have just about any repair part for any plumbing fixture,” says Leroy. Robertson Supply wants to be the first place you think of whenever you have a plumbing need. Store hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

KKids Bowl Free This Summer Broken Arrow Lanes offers children up to age 15 two free games per day all summer long for those who register online.

By Sheryl Sowell The last day of school is only a few weeks away, and parents are wondering how they can keep their kids entertained and out of trouble this summer – without dropping a wad of cash. Broken Arrow Lanes has the perfect solution for summertime boredom, and it won’t make a dent in your pocketbook. The Kids Bowl Free program began in April and lasts through September 1. All parents need to do is go online to www.brokenarrowlanes.com, register their children (up to age 15), and the kids will enjoy free bowling all summer long. Registered participants in the Kids Bowl Free program receive coupons via email each Sunday to bowl two free games per day, every day – no strings attached. “This is our fourth year for the program, and last year alone we had 5,000 children registered to bowl free,” says Michelle Engelby, general manager of Broken Arrow Lanes. “This is a great national program to really get kids excited about bowling. Bowling is a fun, healthy activity that families can do together.” A Family Pass option is available also. For

Michelle Engelby, general manager of Broken Arrow Lanes. families that register at least one child, they may purchase a pass good for up to four family members to qualify for two games per day all summer. A mobile phone application will soon be available, allowing you to use your phone rather than

having to print coupons. The Broken Arrow bowling center has been open since the 1970s and was purchased by Andy Bartholomy in 2004, when it became Broken Arrow Lanes. Mr. Bartholomy owns 10 bowling centers in Missouri,

Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. “We have seen a lot of bowling centers go under in this area, but Broken Arrow Lanes has remained successful because Andy truly knows the bowling business and the importance of always innovating and improving,” says Michelle. Broken Arrow Lanes is a traditional, smoke-free bowling center with 36 lanes, full service bar and lounge, pro shop, and new game room with 22 video and redemption games. They recently renovated with new carpet and giant video screens near the lanes. A variety of concessions are available, and patrons regularly tell Michelle they have “the best burger in Broken Arrow.” Broken Arrow Lanes boasts a strong league base, with options for youth, adults and seniors. Leagues range from those who are brand new to bowling to one of the most competitive leagues in the city. Children registered in the Kids Bowl Free program have the option of joining a league that bowls Wednesdays at 11 a.m., and participants may use their free coupons. “Bowling leagues

Find that Special Something Unique gift items for all occasions can be found at Surceé Home Décor & Gifts.

By Susan Erler April showers bring May flowers, but the month of May also brings many special occasions, each a gift-giving opportunity for loved ones and close friends. And of course, you want to give a gift that shows them your heartfelt sentiments. That’s a lot of pressure. But for those who have discovered Surceé Home Décor & Gifts in Owasso, gift giving is easy, and you can be confident that everything you give will be distinctive and unique. Owner Laura Sanders prides herself on locating a wide variety of items everyone would be thrilled to receive, while keeping her customers’ budgets in mind too. “I have amazing gifts for Mother’s Day, graduation, baby showers and weddings, all priced under $25,” she says. “Most have multiple people on their gift lists, so by shopping Surceé they can find one-of-a-kind items all reasonably priced.” Surceé has some terrific options for graduations, including monogrammed bath wraps, luggage, storage bins to help organize tiny dorm rooms, and keepsake items engraved and personalized for the new graduate.

Susan Hanchette, long-time employee of Surceé. Brighton is offering an exceptional deal just in time for Mother’s Day. Called “Ears to You,” this amazing offer can certainly help everyone stretch their gift-giving dollars. Simply purchase any Brighton necklace and bracelet from April 26-May 12 and you will receive free your choice of Brighton earrings. That’s a deal that’s hard to beat. Recently the A&M Flower Stand opened its new location in front of Surceé in the parking lot of Tyann Plaza. For those who have become loyal customers of

A&M, you might remember their old location in front of Reasor’s on 86th Street North. But this year they have moved north and Laura is thrilled. “We are very excited to have them as part of our location.” Laura is also excited about several fun activities going on at her store during the month of May. The first is May 4, when her annual Sidewalk Sale will coincide with the Owasso Bouquet of Gardeners Spring Festival. The festival features a huge variety of garden

accessories, trees, plants, musical entertainment and more. Fiesta Night is set for May 6, and it is no accident that this celebration falls on the same night as the grand opening of Los Cabos, the restaurant now occupying the space that was formerly Delta Café. “We know customers will face long wait times at Los Cabos on that first night,” says Laura. “We invite them to walk down to our store, where we are serving chips and salsa and margaritas, while we heat things up with some sizzling specials of our own.” Laura has owned Surceé for the past six years, while the store itself has been an Owasso mainstay for almost 10. She attributes her loyal customer base to her friendly and knowledgeable staff, most who have been with her for years. Susan Hanchette is a long-time member of the Surceé family. “I get the opportunity to help our customers with so many major events in their lives,” says Susan. “We have the perfect items to decorate their new home or for them to give at a baby shower – amazing items that they can be proud to pass on to someone. I love that I get to help people find the perfect item for all their major life events.” Surceé has an impressive collection of bracelets and necklaces that can all be monogrammed and personalized, and a huge collection of custom charms. “We have expanded our store to include many items that you might not expect to find at a gift shop,” explains Laura. “We

Page 15

have beautiful wedding gifts, decorating and cook books, outdoor entertaining items, home décor, furniture and an extensive line of bubble bath, lotions, candles and perfumes.” One baby gift item that Laura cannot seem to keep in stock are called “Chew Beads.” These are stylish silicone “teething” jewelry designed for the new mom to look stylish while allowing her baby to do what comes naturally, chew on mom’s jewelry. “These make fun and functional baby gifts, and they have been incredibly difficult to keep on the shelves!” A new line added to the Surceé lineup is retro Tulsa gift items including Tulsa dish towels, coffee mugs and many other hostess gifts all designed around iconic Tulsa landmarks. “We already offer Oklahoma gift items and they have been incredibly popular,” Laura states. “I can’t wait to see how this new line is received.” Store hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Sunday. Be sure to find Surceé on Facebook for new product lines, special events and more.

FFostering Hope Choices for Life will show appreciation to its foster parents with a dinner banquet on May 9 at First Baptist Church to celebrate National Foster Care Month. By Sheryl Sowell Foster parents are truly special individuals. They take in children from abusive or neglectful situations who require therapy for medical or psychological conditions, and they stick with these kids to provide them the love and care that many have never known. Foster parents with Choices for Life Foster Care in Sapulpa give of themselves 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But on Thursday, May 9, they will be on the receiving end of a special appreciation banquet. As part of National Foster Care Month in May, Choices for Life will honor all of its foster parents. The dinner will be held at First Baptist Church in Sapulpa and gives the foster parents an opportunity to get all dolled up and enjoy a night out for themselves while Choices for Life therapists watch the kids. The appreciation dinner not only recognizes the generosity and commitment of foster parents, but also raises awareness about the need for more families who are willing to open their homes and hearts to these children.

Raising children is hard enough, but therapeutic needs create a whole new dynamic. Unlike traditional foster care, Choices for Life focuses on

children with a higher level of emotional and behavioral needs. Not everyone can provide the patience, love, strength and open mind that are needed, but many

individuals and families feel a real calling. According to Maria Carter of Choices for Life, they are currently in desperate need of foster parents to care for local children. The process of becoming a foster parent includes 13 weeks of free training, in which treatment families learn to create opportunities for their foster child to heal and grow. The goal typically is for the child to return to his or her biological family, with the interpersonal and behavioral skills to become a positive and accomplished adult. Each child is carefully

evaluated and matched with a strong and stable foster family that will integrate that child not only into their family, but also into their community, school and church. It takes a unique person or family to open their hearts to these children. Those who were up to the challenge say it is one of the most thrilling and rewarding experiences in their lives, as they watch a troubled child blossom into a loving and responsible individual. All children — including the 408,000 American children and youth in foster care — deserve a safe, happy life. Young people in foster care especially need nurturing adults on their side because their own families are in crisis and unable to care for them. Choices for Life is a national agency with offices in Georgia, Oklahoma City, Checotah, Ponca City and Sapulpa. A new foster care class begins soon. For more information on how to make a lifelong difference in a young person’s life, call (918) 248-4340 Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Outdoor Soccer Returns to Tulsa The Tulsa Athletics’ first game will be at the original Driller’s Stadium at 15th and Yale on Saturday, May 18.

By Sheryl Sowell On July 13, 1985, the Tulsa Roughnecks of the North American Soccer League played their final match at the original Driller’s Stadium at 15th and Yale. On May 18, 2013, the Tulsa Athletics will take that same field as outdoor soccer finally makes its return to Tulsa. When the NASL and the Tulsa Roughnecks ceased to be,

several players stayed in the Tulsa area, remaining active in the soccer community which they had helped create. Their bond with the community is still evident today as thousands of athletes have played under their tutelage. Tulsa is revered across the country as a soccer city, with our youth clubs being some of the

most talented and competitive. However, there has been a gap at the top adult level since 1985. This summer, the journey back to the top of the soccer map begins. “When support meets ambition, only success can follow in soccer,” said team co-owner Sonny Dalesandro. Tulsans have an unrivaled passion for the game of soccer,

Coach Joey Ryan, Dr. Tommy Kern, Sonny Dalesandro and Jake Dobkins of the Tulsa Athletics organization.

so much so that several attempts have been made to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to our city. This is the Tulsa Athletics’ goal as well, one step at a time. Rekindling the love that Tulsa has for the game at its highest level is the first priority. Four of the newer, yet most successful clubs in MLS are teams that played in lower divisions, and because of incredible fan support made the jump to the MLS. This is the Tulsa Athletics’ ultimate goal. This summer will be Tulsa Athletics’ inaugural season in the National Premiere Soccer League, the largest league in the United States, with 61 teams competing across the country. It is the perfect league for a new ambitious franchise to start its journey towards returning Tulsa to the forefront of the soccer map in America. Co-owner Sonny Dalesandro was the youngest Oklahoman to play professionally when he debuted for Tulsa’s USISL franchise in 1995. Dalesandro won “Rookie of the Year” that season and went on to have a six-year career, playing for the Milwaukee Wave and the Wichita Wings. “Some of my very earliest memories are of Skelly Stadium and the Tulsa Roughnecks, and today’s youth deserve that same impression that I was afforded.” Dr. Tommy Kern, co-owner of the Tulsa Athletics and a sports medicine physician for Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center, grew up playing soccer in Tulsa and went on to play at

Page 21

Brown University prior to medical school at the University of Oklahoma. “We are excited to bring high-level soccer back to Tulsa to match the quality of the youth programs.” Joey Ryan, head coach of the Tulsa Athletics, has been coaching since the mid-80s after having played professionally in the American Soccer League, the NASL, and indoor in the MISL. Ryan was also an NCAA division 1 champion with the legendary, undefeated Hartwick College team of 1977. Ryan has coached at the youth, high school, semi-pro and professional level in New York, New Jersey and Oklahoma. “My staff and I are extremely excited to be a part of the resurrection of both outdoor soccer in Tulsa and the old Drillers Stadium at Expo Square and look forward to many entertaining, successful games being played there. The owners have done a fantastic job of putting this project together, and we hope to work as hard and represent Tulsa on the field as well as they have in putting this franchise together.” Bring the whole family out for the Tulsa Athletics’ first game on Saturday, May 18. Tickets are available at www.tulsa-athletics.com; reserved seating is $10 and general admission is $5. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter at Ttownsoccer. For more information, contact

AArt Bike Tulsa

An exciting and unique art show is scheduled throughout the month of May to promote MS awareness and Bike MS 2013.

By Duane Blankenship Each year the National MS Society Oklahoma hosts a variety of special fundraising events for the purpose of raising awareness about multiple sclerosis. Funds raised help support programs and services available to Oklahomans with this disease. Programs provide knowledge, recreation, family and social support, and awareness throughout the greater Tulsa community. The annual signature event of the National MS Society is Bike MS, and 2013 marks its 28th anniversary in Oklahoma. Bike MS is not “just a bike ride,” but an experience for all who participate in the event. It is one of the best supported cycling events in our state. The two-day Bike MS 2013 will commence September 21 from the Agri Civic Center in Chandler and finish there the next day. Nearly 1,000 riders will join forces to raise money. Although Bike MS is a challenging event, riders return year after year, supporting the movement to create a world free of MS. A unique awareness campaign began three years ago in Tulsa to inform residents about the disease, local fundraising efforts, and the

annual Bike MS. This year will mark the third annual Art Bike Tulsa, which coincides with Tulsa International Mayfest in downtown Tulsa. Art Bike Tulsa will run May 1-31 at the YMCA of Greater Tulsa located at 418 S. Main. The event will be open to the public Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the entire month of May. Art Bike Tulsa will also be on display at Tulsa International Airport from June 1 through September 30. The presenting sponsor is SCFM Compression Systems. Art Bike Tulsa is an exciting, unusual, fun display of art made entirely of old bicycle parts. The unique explosion of creativeness is one that your entire family will enjoy. This year’s exhibit will include works of art from successful local artists and student artists from Union, Broken Arrow, and Booker T. Washington High Schools. Some of the featured Tulsa artists include Michael Christopher, Robin Green Tilly, Billie Sue Thompson and Jan McKay. Jan has been an MS volunteer for 23 years and has participated in Bike MS for 20 years. “I ride in honor

of my good friend, Rhonda Fletcher, who was diagnosed with MS 23 years ago.” Jan loves riding for the cause and has been blessed with meeting many great people along Bike MS routes. “I wish no one had to endure MS,” says Jan. “I feel good aiding in fundraising efforts to assist others.” Rhonda Fletcher volunteers at the MS Society office once or twice a week. “I am appreciative of the riders who endure Bike MS each year for me and others who have been diagnosed with MS,” she said. When first diagnosed, Rhonda went into denial. “My good friend Jan literally bugged me for years to get involved with the organization.” When Rhonda finally did, she was impressed by every person she met and was touched that they were doing so much for her and others. RReveal Yourself Reveal Salon & Aesthetics at 91st and Memorial in Tulsa provides quality hair, nail and skin services. By Lorrie Ward Several months ago, when Nicole McGinnis opened Reveal Salon & Aesthetics, she wanted to create more than just a place where people could come for skin, hair and nail treatments by quality, trained professionals. She wanted to create this place within a familial environment, where clients could feel as comfortable with the atmosphere

around the stylist’s chair as they did while relaxing at home. Nicole bought the salon at 91st and Memorial in September of 2012 and changed its name to reflect the motto “Refresh, Renew, Reveal.” She felt that both experience and atmosphere were integral to earning the trust of clients who want to see the transformation that matches this

motto. She was happy that Master Barber DeAllen Brown decided to remain at the salon, and she set about adding a staff of qualified and caring stylists, including Stephanie Dawn Ritter, Shaela Fleig, Laurenn Williams, Audrey Loney, and Troy Edmonds. Troy’s wife, Debbie, also joined the team as nail technician. Everyone on

staff has years of experience. Troy, for example, has worked as a stylist for 40 years and Debbie, his spouse of almost 30 years, has been doing nails for 27 years. Both Troy and Debbie have maintained a solid clientele over their tenure of service. All stylists participate in continuing education as well, which is important in an industry with ever-changing trends and advancing techniques. One popular service right now is the Brazilian Blowout, a hair smoothing treatment that eliminates frizz – a common complaint in Oklahoma’s humid climate. Also available for those with curl and frizz problems is Keratin Smoothing. These two techniques can be performed for short or long term results. Nicole reports that the Keratin Smoothing treatments last anywhere from four to six weeks. “People are having their color and highlights done and then the Keratin treatments,” Nicole notes. “It’s best to do it this way, so that the Keratin treatment seals the color into the hair.” Nicole’s reputation as an esthetician is as solid as the reputations of her stylists, but since she will not sing her own praises, Nail Technician Debbie Edmonds does it for her. “All of my clients who go to Nicole for skin care love her,” says Debbie. “She’s got that touch.” Debbie herself recently visited Nicole for a few sessions of MicroPhototherapy and saw dramatic results after just one treatment. “When I was done, I

Page 25

wanted to hug her,” says Debbie. “She’s fabulous.” Nicole strives to help clients create unique skin care regimens for each particular skin concern. For example, she evaluates the skin to see if it needs a peel and at what level and frequency, and decides whether it could benefit from microdermabrasion or MicroPhototherapy. Her most recent addition to the menu is Face Reality, a program specifically designed for long-term treatment of acne. “One of the problems with acne is that people treat it too aggressively,” says Nicole. “The skin either gets too dry or it gets used to the product, which then stops working. Face Reality introduces its key ingredient at a lower strength and increases strength gradually, giving long-term results.” “Long-term” is what Nicole and the staff at Reveal Salon are all about. Whether you want to begin a lasting regimen for your skin or hair – or both – visit Reveal Salon & Aesthetics and experience the atmosphere where lasting results and relationships are created.

By Sheryl Sowell On Saturday, May 18, you are invited to experience a bit of Cajun cuisine right here in Tulsa. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats, on 71st Street just west of Lewis, will host CrawFest 2013 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Come and enjoy all your

favorite Cajun foods like crawfish etouffee, crawfish boudin, boiled crawfish and boiled shrimp. They’ll have your favorites on the grill as well, including beef and pork sausage, pork boudin, and hot dogs for the little ones. Don’t forget other

Cajun favorites including red beans, Cajun sausage sandwiches, corn maque choux, homemade pralines and bread pudding. The festival will feature live Cajun music from The Jambalya Jazz Band as well as Gravy, a jazz band that hails from New

Orleans. Children will love the fun crawfish races, craw-fishing, and New Orleans Mardi Gras bead art. A portion of the proceeds from CrawFest will benefit the son of one of Hebert’s employees. Nathan Johns is a young husband and father who had the misfortune of getting West Nile Fever in June of 2012. Nathan remains hospitalized and is facing months of respiratory and physical rehabilitation. Proceeds from CrawFest will also go to Planted Ministries, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the poorest children and families in Nicaragua through their education program. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats, offering delectable fresh-cut meats and poultry, is open Monday through Saturday, with lunch and dinner served each day. Owner Ed “Cajun Ed” Richard explains what makes their authentic Cajun food so special: many of the ingredients and seasonings come from Louisiana, and the meat is fresh – the best of the best. “The timely combination of cooking and seasonings creates the authentic Cajun flavor,

which was previously found only in south Louisiana,” says Cajun Ed. These wonderful seasonings are all available in the largest Cajun retail space in Tulsa. To top off your meal, choose from a variety of made-from-scratch desserts – bread pudding, bourbon pecan pie, key lime pie, chocolate ganache peanut butter pie, traditional and chocolate pralines, and carrot cake. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats is located at 2101 E. 71st St. in Tulsa, on 71st Street just west of Lewis in the big red house. Cajun Ed is a Louisiana native who knows how to combine delicious food with fun and entertainment to throw an amazing party, so don’t miss CrawFest 2013! For more information, visit www.cajuned.com.

Fitness on the Green Green. “Fowler has a strong philosophy of giving back to the communities in which we serve,” Jonathan said, “and we love being involved in the arts, culture, health and fitness.” Ken added, “These are the areas in which we want to maintain the focus of Fowler Toyota of Tulsa as we continue serving our community.” When Fowler and Wilkins first met with project co-sponsors, they immediately realized that Fowler had the desire and resources to sponsor Fitness on the Green for the entire month of May. You may not choose to attend each daily class, but you certainly have that option to broaden your exercise experience. A variety of fitness and health-geared events will be conducted by professional area fitness instructors, and each class will be held for

continued from page 1

one hour. Although the Monday through Friday classes are mostly for adults, there will be a class called “Mommy & Me” each Saturday of the month for moms and their children. This class will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Gift items will be distributed to participants every day, and you may learn more about Fitness on the Green by visiting the website, www.guthriegreen.com/fitness-green. Boot Camp will be offered twice each week, Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 p.m. It is a one-hour class that provides a complete total body workout to help you get in shape or challenge your body to reach its fullest potential. You will experience intervals of power walking or jogging and spurts of cardio endurance, athletic drills, kickboxing and strength

training. With the incorporation of high and low intensity intervals of exercise, your body is able to maximize its caloric burn as it enters the fat-burning zone. Other classes will include Tai Chi, Family Yoga, Fitness Walking, and Mommy & Me each Saturday morning. The Family Yoga class is held each Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. and a special Yoga class will be presented by lululemon each Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Friday Fitness Walking class will take a different route each week to expose participants to the history of downtown Tulsa. They will experience a synergism through the group class environment and will, hopefully, find ongoing support, motivation and inspiration to continue their walking experience for health and

weight loss. Beginners and experienced walkers will feel comfortable during the workout and will enjoy the historic sites of downtown Tulsa. Fowler Toyota of Tulsa is proud to be a sponsor of Fitness on the Green. In doing so, they are providing an incredible opportunity for you and your family, whatever your fitness level. Be sure to watch for other Fowler sponsored events throughout the year.

Richest Noodling Showdown Comes to Claremore The Battle of the Big Cats noodling competition takes place June 13-15, 2013.

By Tanya Andrews Claremore is known for its many Oklahoma legends. Legends like Will Rogers, Patti Page, Lynn Riggs and “Oklahoma!”, Andy Payne, Stuart Roosa, and J.M. Davis all bring fame to Claremore and visitors from around the world. Cowboys, Grammy Award winners, astronauts, and gun collectors, now champion noodler? Kaleb Summers, Claremore native, and team STOadventures, won the 2012 OKIE Noodling Tournament in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. He has worn many hats in his young life, including graduate of Oklahoma State University, boxer, steer wrestler, hunting and fishing guide, and part of the blasting team in his family’s construction business, so adding noodler to his resume comes naturally. Possibly a like-character to Will Rogers, only his tricks are with flathead catfish and not with ropes, Kaleb’s home is the outdoors of northeastern Oklahoma. His noodling experience started in southeast Oklahoma when a friend took him fishing and he soon learned how to decipher between fish holes and beaver holes, while studying the tricks to find the flatheads. Wikipedia defines noodling as fishing for catfish using only

bare hands, practiced primarily in the southern United States. A noodler places his hand inside a discovered catfish hole. Other sources, such as urbandictionary.com, describe it as a crazy person using their fingers as bait to catch a catfish. Kaleb is not “crazy” but is an avid hunter and fisherman whose life has revolved around the preservation of a fading lifestyle that once used to be the norm. “To release a trophy fish reveals a rather strong kind of character, for as sportsmen, we sometimes owe it to our quarry to live to fight another day. After all, the true thrill lies solely in the fight underwater,” says Kaleb. It was a big fight in June of 2012 when Kaleb and his team fought a flathead weighing over 70 pounds (70.46 to be exact) and won the tournament. Their winning fish was the largest on record for the 14-year event. Kaleb and STOadventures, along with Visit Claremore, Claremore Expo Center, NABATAK OUTDOORS, K95 and Fox 23, Summers Drilling & Blasting, Value News, Osage Casino, GRDA, Melton’s Sales, Pixley Lumber Company, Warren Cat, Reasors, Wild Country Meats, and BancFirst will host the

“Battle of the Big Cats…Route 66’s Richest Noodling Showdown” coming June 13-15. A total of $10,000 in cash in prizes will be awarded, with $5,000 going to the contestant/team with the “BIG” fish. Contestants must be entered by Wednesday, June 12 at noon. They can then check-in to start scouting and fishing at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 and go until weigh-in on Saturday at 6 p.m. Contestants must be in the weigh-in line at the Claremore Expo Center by 6 p.m. and report to event staff, or be disqualified. Entry fees are $50 per person and are available online at www.stoadventures.net, www.visitclaremore.org, or in person at NABATAK OUTDOORS or the Claremore Expo Center. Contestants can fish any lake, such as Grand Lake or Hudson, or any river they wish to. Winners will be announced at 6:30 p.m. and entertainment will continue afterward for the crowds to enjoy. The public is invited to come out to the Expo on Friday and enjoy a fish fry, live entertainment, and a variety of vendors at the Claremore Expo Center. The tradeshow will open at noon and

Champion Noodler Kaleb Summers. the fish fry and entertainment will start around 6 p.m. Throughout Friday and Saturday, Kaleb will show his skills in several noodling exhibitions in a 3,000gallon tank. Spectators and fans will enjoy entertainment provided by A Bar Bunkhouse Band and other performers to be named. Music, tradeshow, exhibitions, and being present for the contestants’ check-ins is all free to the public! “Visit Claremore is elated to work with Kaleb and the various partners to bring this great event to our hometown,” says Tanya Andrews, executive director. “Claremore is proud to have one of our own want to share their experience and bring a competition here. Kaleb sees that

an event of this nature will bring visitors, competitors, and residents from Oklahoma and the region, and he is excited about showcasing his hometown. He is a great ambassador of Claremore and of Oklahoma!” A full event schedule, information, contestant entry forms, and tradeshow vendor registrations are available for the Battle of the Big Cats at www.stoadventures.net or www.visitclaremore.org, or by calling (918) 341-8688.

PPrepare Thyself for Merriment The Castle of Muskogee’s annual Oklahoma Renaissance Festival runs May 4 through June 2. By Sheryl Sowell Travel to 1539 Castleton for the Castle of Muskogee’s Oklahoma Renaissance Festival. King Henry VIII and his sister, Queen Margaret of Scotland, are on progress through the fair land, and this year, they are joined by King Francis of France and King James of Scotland. There is sure to be mirth, merriment, and mischief throughout the Village. More than 600 costumed merchants, artisans, and performers populate Castleton, transporting visitors to the 16th century. Music, comedy, swordplay, and magic can be found on 15 stages throughout the grounds. They welcome several new performers to the stages this year, including Bawdily Harm (comedic swordplay), Black Oak Shillelagh (Celtic music), and Ed “Cheeks” Miller (sea shanties and more). Returning favorites include The Musical Blades, The Jolly Rogers, Karma Dogma, Ez N Dil, The Jester Rejects, Raks al Hassana Bellydance, the Laundry Lasses, and many more. Sir Thomas and Sir Richard of The Heroic Knights of Old joust twice each day in the Tournament Arena, The Royal Gauntlet Birds of Prey showcases the grandeur of hawks and

falcons, and Cast in Bronze fills the arena with the awesome sound of the Carillon bells. The Royal Luncheon is served each day by the arena, where you can dine with His Majesty while watching the tournament below. Inside the Castle Keep you can witness presentations to the Royal Court or attend the Queen’s Tea. Enjoy the 37,000square-foot Castle with its dungeon, Torture Chamber, catacombs, and so much more. While most of the festival is strictly family entertainment,

adults can sneak away to attend the King’s Smoker (21 and over) each afternoon for some bawdy humor. Children and families will delight in the newly expanded Woodlands area. Visit Excalibur Keepe to sign good behavior contracts; learn to make marbles, paper, and chain mail; play games; hunt for pirate treasure; and explore the Enchanted Faery Forest. Dance around the Maypole or visit the Black House or the Garrison to learn all about life in Renaissance England.

Sir Thomas and Sir Richard joust in the Tournament Arena.

Over 600 costumed performers, artisans and merchants populate Castleton during the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival. Get your tickets online at www.okcastle.com and like them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/thecastleofmuskogee for all of the updates. If you plan to attend the festival more than one weekend, consider joining Friends of the Festival for amazing year-round benefits, including a season pass, four extra complimentary tickets, a personalized medallion, discounts on the evening events, and discounts at participating merchants. Visit www.okcastle.com/friendsoffestival.htm for complete information.

Don’t forget to indulge in some of the wonderful food all over the site – smoked turkey legs or homemade barbecue, roasted ears of corn, Mediterranean delights, fresh baked bread and pastries, ice cream, and more. And, you can find refreshing drinks (from water to cappuccino to ale) at any one of the eight pubs in the Village. You are welcome to come in plain clothes, a costume of your own, or rent a costume for the day from the shop just inside the Main Entrance. You can even exchange money at the Bank for Castleton coin, accepted throughout the Village. Plan now for delightful May days at the Renaissance Festival! The festival will be open each Saturday and Sunday beginning May 4 through June 2, plus Student Day on Friday, May 10 and Memorial Day on Monday, May 27.

GGet Hip to Dr. LaButti Patient Kathy Hill is pain-free after her successful hip replacement. By Joshua Danker-Dake In 2012, Kathy Hill, of Tulsa, had her right hip replaced by Dr. Ronald LaButti. “I’d had my left hip replaced in 2003,” Kathy says. “I dealt with the pain and discomfort in my right hip for about two years, until the symptoms were as bad as they’d been in my other hip. It hurt so badly that I didn’t want to go anywhere or do anything.” By this point, Kathy’s hip was bone-on-bone. “I couldn’t even get my shoe on or get in or out of my car without excruciating pain,” she says. “I was having trouble working every day because of the pain medicine I’d been taking, and I had stomach problems and heartburn all the time.” Her primary care physician recommended she see Dr. LaButti. “He took me seriously and he listened to me, which I really appreciated,” says Kathy. “And he didn’t make me wait for surgery – he scheduled me right away for a total hip replacement.” Dr. LaButti helped Kathy through a recovery that was initially very difficult, she says.

“My recovery was slow and very painful for the first couple of weeks. I was on a walker for six weeks and couldn’t put all my weight on my right foot. I did therapy at home for the first six weeks, I was back at work fulltime after eight weeks, and I did an additional four weeks of therapy once I was back to work. Dr. LaButti told me, step-by-step, what to expect – I did everything he told me to, and everything went just as he said. And his nurse was awesome – I could call and explain whatever was going on, and she would get right back with me.” Kathy says she was impressed with her experience with Dr. LaButti and his office at every stage. “Everyone at his office was very professional and considerate – they knew I was in a lot of pain and needed to be seen as soon as possible, and I never had to wait long at all for my appointments. After the surgery, Dr. LaButti checked on me every morning and addressed all my concerns. And when I got to my room, his office had already sent flowers, which was

really thoughtful.” Kathy recommends Dr. LaButti. “He took care of my pain. I don’t take any pain medicine now, and I don’t walk with any kind of a limp. I can put my shoes on now and get in and out of my car with no problem, and people who don’t know me would never know I’ve had a hip replacement, much less both hips replaced.” Kathy works for the Tulsa County Election Board. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, working in the yard, and enjoying nature and the woods. DDay Camp for Kids The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Broken Arrow provides lots of summer camp fun. By Duane Blankenship Janis Fraley, director of the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Broken Arrow, is looking forward to the organization’s annual Summer Day Camp. This year’s theme is

“Amazing GRace.” Camp will commence May 28 and conclude August 21. Campers may attend camp all or any of the scheduled 13 weeks. “Our professional staff will

Janice Fraley and SaQuita Burrell look forward to the Summer Day Camp running May 28-August 21 at the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Broken Arrow.

provide games, crafts, field trips and other activities for campers to enjoy,” said Janis. Summer Day Camp is open for children going into kindergarten through fifth grades and sixth through eighth grades. Exciting program activities include archery, swimming, team sports, inflatable games, arts and crafts, field trips, special guests, Vacation Bible School, music and more. Applications for “Amazing GRace” Summer Day Camp may be obtained at the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club located at 1400 W. Washington in Broken Arrow. When you fill out an application, you will be required to make a $5 deposit for each week your child will be attending. This $5 reserves their spot and will be deducted from the weekly fee. There is also a $45 registration fee that pays for a 12-month membership to the Boys & Girls Club plus a T-shirt. Weekly fees for camp are due each Monday morning of camp. Children must be registered by the week; they will not be permitted to attend by the day. Program participation is limited in order to assure quality

standards, so don’t delay – make your child’s reservation now. Applications are accepted until the program is full. Please remember that a copy of immunization shot records must be provided for each child. Parents and guardians must sign children in and out each day of camp. You may not simply drop them off at the front sidewalk. Here’s the daily schedule for camp: from 7 to 9 a.m. campers arrive and engage in sports and game room activities. (All campers must be signed in by 9. If they miss the 9 a.m. sign-in time, they will not be accepted at camp until after 1 p.m.) Assembly for all campers is at 9 a.m. and scheduled activities are from 9 to 12 p.m. Campers will break for lunch from 12 to 1 p.m. and each is expected to bring a sack lunch with his or her name on it. There will be a concession with cold drinks and snacks. Since there is no microwave at camp, please pack lunches that are ready to eat. Note that fast food lunches will be available each Wednesday at a cost of $5 per child. From 1 to 4:30 p.m., swimming and organized activities will be

scheduled. The pool and gym will be closed at 5 p.m. and students will engage in outside activities or be allowed in the game room until 6. A $10 late fee will be assessed if a child is not picked up from camp by 6 p.m. Campers should wear clothing that is comfortable for physical activities. A swimsuit and towel should be brought from home and kept in a small gym bag with the camper’s name on it. Campers should not bring toys or valuables and no cell phones or electronic games will be permitted. The camp will provide special days for electronics. Most field trips are optional. There is a fee for some of the field trips, which may be paid with cash or check. A complete calendar of events is available at the front desk, one for kindergarten through fifth and one for sixth through eighth grades.
