ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

To Hell in a Hand Basket BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

The Stock Market has suffered twenty-four major downturns of greater than 3% since 2004. In 2008, it dropped by more than 50% in the worst recession the United States has ever experienced since the Great Depression. All the while, many Americans watched while their retirement savings disappeared before their very eyes. Not only has there been an emotional toll from the breach of confidence in the system but also major breaches of trust with several big banks collapsing, financial and corporate bail outs, and corruption of government. All together this has caused a crisis of confidence manifesting itself in what I call Post Traumatic Market Disorder. This (fictional but accurate) PTMD diagnosis is a specific anxiety disorder affecting individuals who have experienced profound stress and emotional trauma caused by the volatility in the markets. It is characterized by an overall mistrust of the markets and anyone involved with them, recurrent flashbacks, anxiety, fear, paralysis, and anger. To aggravate this disorder, we can also add the pending Presidential election….which emphasizes the negativity, divisiveness, and sets an overall cynical and pessimistic tone. Hear me! If the world is going to hell in a hand basket…then my advice is to sell hand baskets! The key to being successful in investing is to find the opportunity, not the problem. We are STILL America! We are still the most creative, innovative, productive country in the world.

don’t watch it, you will be broke to boot. You have to focus on what’s in front of you, not what’s behind you. You must be committed to finding solutions and alternatives, not dwelling on the past. If you focus on the pickle you’re in, you will continue to be in the pickle you’re in. If you focus on the wall you’re about to hit, that is certainly where you will end up. Focus on where you want to go and steer in that direction. Here are some steps to get un-stuck: Millions of businesses all over our great country are still alive and kicking, making money, and paying salaries. We have had some tough years. Things have happened that aren’t right or fair. We have had some bad eggs in the mix. We are still the land of opportunity. Opportunities come with set backs and disappointments. They do not present themselves on silver platters. We have to be creative, hardworking, and persevere. Necessity IS the Mother of Invention! Dealing with problems and challenges encourages creative efforts to meet the need and resolve it. The greatest American inventions (from light bulbs, to penicillin, to microwave ovens, to computers, cell phones, GPS, the internet, and facebook) have come from focusing on opportunities and finding solutions to problems and NEVER giving up! One thing I know for sure, if you choose to focus on the negative, dwell on the problems, entrench yourself amongst the obstacles, then my friends you will stay stuck! You will stay miserable. And if you

1.) Decide WHAT you want. (Be specific!) 2.) Decide WHY you want it. (The emotion behind why you want what you want) 3.) Make a plan of action and take steps toward it everyday. When it comes to financial goals, don’t be afraid to pay for help. It could be your best investment. 4) Stay focused. When trouble and fear arise (and they will), stay focused on where you want to go and steer that way. Do not focus on the fear. Remember, the past doesn’t define you, it prepares you! Who you trust matters. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918-272-1120. SSerious About Sushi

Dial up your taste buds for delectable Japanese sushi at Sushi Hana in Tulsa.

By Duane Blankenship Kenny Chan spent 30 years in New York prior to moving to Tulsa to open his Sushi Hana Japanese fusion restaurant in December of last year. Kenny loves to cook and owned several successful New York City restaurants. When he came to Tulsa last year to open Sushi Hana, he brought with him three sushi masters he had known in New York. All three of these creative culinary artists trained under the same sushi master chef in New York City and then went their separate ways to work for other successful sushi restaurants in New York and Atlantic City, New Jersey. “All of our dishes are very good,” says Kenny, “and together our three sushi masters bring uniquely differing styles and flavors to each new dish we create.” Kenny and the master chefs – Aaron, Andy and Tony – love creating new dishes that are ultimately featured at Sushi Hana. “Each member of our team has a differing style of cooking, and they bring those styles together to create sensational dishes. Each is purely an artist and a sushi master, bringing both flavor and presentation to our tables,” says Kenny. The master chefs “paint”

In order to add a new item to the menu every two weeks, the team works together to create new appetizers, entrees, and specialty items for patrons to savor. Each new item is inspired by total teamwork and the combination of ideas that come from each member of the Sushi Hana

team. “Sushi Hana sushi is made differently from other rolled sushi you may have eaten before,” added Kenny. Becoming a sushi master is, indeed, a discipline to be mastered. Aaron is Sushi Hana’s main chef, and whatever appears daily on the sushi bar is ultimately his responsibility. Aaron spent eight years in New York City training to become a sushi master and

practicing his learned skills. “Each plate served at Sushi Hana is a balance of exquisite layout and design that not only pleases the eye, but the palatte,” says Aaron. Andy spent nine years in New York becoming a sushi master. He spent his first year there working in the kitchen of a sushi restaurant, always observing and studying to learn his

chosen trade. Tony also spent eight years in New York training under his sushi master chef. He worked in restaurants in Manhattan and worked for Aaron for three years. Tony came to Tulsa three months after Aaron and Andy arrived because his wife was expecting their first child, and they wanted to wait until their son was born before they joined the Sushi Hana team in Tulsa. “Tony, Andy, Kenny and I knew each other, were friends, and worked together. It’s nice being together at Sushi Hana,” says Aaron. “We are family.” Kenny added that the Tulsa community has embraced each member of his Sushi Hana team with open arms. “We are truly grateful and thankful for the opportunity to serve our patrons.” Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday; dinner is served Monday through Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday dinner is from 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Sushi Hana is closed Sunday. TTake a Trip to Tijuana’s Tijuana’s Grill & Cantina offers a large menu of Mexican culinary delights at 146th and Memorial in Bixby. By Lorrie Ward Business was booming at Tijuana's Grill & Cantina at 79th and Memorial in Tulsa. Owner Francisco Barbosa's brother, who had been in business with him for many years, decided to pursue other avenues and so, in order to be able to keep running his family-based business, Francisco and his wife Giselle had to choose between their two Tijuana’s locations. They shut the doors of the Tulsa location and decided to concentrate their full efforts on the restaurant at 146th and Memorial in Bixby. "We want people to know we are still here," Francisco says. "We've already had many of our customers from the Tulsa location come to the restaurant and say they are so glad they found us!" Arturo Vergara, who has been a cook at the Bixby location since it opened its doors in September of 2010, is now joined by his brother, Luis, who was cook at the 79th and Memorial location. The brothers have worked for the Barbosa family for over a decade, back to when Francisco worked for El Chico Restaurant. They were such great cooks that Francisco hired them seven years ago when

Francisco and Giselle Barbosa with their children. he, Giselle, and his brother opened the first Tijuana's in Tulsa. The brothers have become well-known for their mastery of Mexican cuisine, which includes all the traditional favorites such as enchiladas, tacos, and fajitas as well as house specialties. The highly popular Guadalajara Grill

includes a fajita steak topped with spinach sauce, chicken breast topped with white queso, and shrimp on a bed of veggies and rice. Another especially popular special on the menu is Spicy Tacos Guajillos, consisting of five soft corn tortillas filled with chicken breast and sautéed in guajillo sauce, then topped

with jack cheese and garnished with cilantro and pico de gallo. Tijuana’s is famous for its authentic tamales, which come in two varieties—pork with chili sauce and chicken with green sauce—and are made completely from scratch. In fact, Francisco points out that in addition to having such a great cooking staff, one of the reasons Tijuana’s food is so flavorful and authentic is because every effort is made to create homemade food with natural ingredients. “Our chile verde is the best in town,” he says. “It is all natural, made from scratch with no vinegar—not from a can.” If you are in the mood for seafood, Tijuana’s has a variety of selections on the “Del Mar” menu, everything from fish tacos (which Francisco reports are highly popular) to Fish and Shrimp Cancun, which consists of grilled fish and shrimp topped with spinach cream sauce and melted jack cheese, served with rice and vegetables. In fact, Francisco points out that Tijuana’s menu has something for everyone and for every level of hunger, whether you want a light grilled chicken salad, a bowl of tortilla soup, a steak fajita

sandwich or a heavier entrée. Tijuana’s offers an all you can eat lunch special, with your mix and match choice of enchiladas, tostadas, tacos and burritos, and an iced tea. For dessert, choose from any variety of completely authentic, handmade choices of fried ice cream, choco chimichangas, Mexican flan, sopapillas, apple sopapillas, and apple pie. Francisco and Giselle are happy to invite those who love authentic, flavorful Mexican food to visit the Bixby location, whether they are new customers or Tijuana’s fans from days gone by. “September will make our second year in our new location,” says Francisco. “We want to take this opportunity to express appreciation for all of our customers’ support.”

GGo Where the Auction Is America’s Auto Auction wants to change the way you buy a car.

By Duane Blankenship America’s Auto Auction of Tulsa provides a full spectrum of services to the public and to area automobile dealers in northeastern Oklahoma with two auctions each week. A public auction is held every Monday evening beginning at 6 p.m. and a dealeronly auction is every Wednesday at 2 p.m. General Manager Monte Freeman says America’s Auto Auction is the only public auto auction remaining in this part of the state. The company has been conducting weekly auctions in Tulsa since the early 1960s, and the public auction has been running for the past 15 years. “Moving the public auction from Saturday mornings to Monday evenings has provided an increase in the number of vehicles sold each week as well as enabled us to upgrade the quality of vehicles we feature in our auctions,” said Monte. Bilingual help is always available on the lot and in the auction barn, and America’s Auto Auction provides a great opportunity to buy pre-owned cars and trucks at wholesale prices. Approximately 150 to 200 vehicles go on the auction block each Monday evening, and you will see all makes and models. Many vehicles are sold

English and Spanish. You may also visit the lot on any Monday after 1 p.m. to view vehicles that will be auctioned. You will not be able to drive them at that time, but you will be able to start them to see that everything is working properly or see if a vehicle might need some work or attention. If you’re selling a vehicle, you’ll be glad to know

The staff of America’s Auto Auction (L to R): Afton Nordean, Judy Rumple, Gail White, Kathy Oliver, Monte Freeman, Summer Sanchez, Andrew Barnett, Christina Hinojosa and Sarah Lambeth. with no reserve, and prices range from $500 and up. The experienced staff at America’s Auto Auction helps set you at ease, making it an easy process to buy or sell a vehicle. If you’ve never been to one of the auctions, Monte invites you to go online to the website,

www.americasautoauction.com, and click on “public auctions” for a preview list of the vehicles being offered each Monday evening. You will also be able to review the step-by-step process, which shows you how simple it really is to buy or sell a vehicle. Information is presented in both

that payment will be made to you the next working day if your vehicle has sold at auction. There are two ways to sell or buy a car. If the seller places a vehicle on the “red light,” it will be sold “as is.” The vehicle is sold with no warranty, no guaranties. If the seller places a

vehicle on the “green light,” it will be sold with the assurance that the engine, transmission, and rear end are in working order, and you will have the opportunity to drive the vehicle before leaving the grounds. Every vehicle is posted with a minimum bid price. Again, you may call or stop by America’s Auto Auction, or visit online, for step-by-step details instructing you how to buy or sell a vehicle. Cars arrive for each Monday’s auction right up until the 6 p.m. announcement that the auction is beginning. Therefore, the largest selection of vehicles can be seen just prior to starting time. A video is shown in the lobby for the benefit of both English and Spanish speaking patrons. It’s not just any auction – it’s America’s Auto Auction. “We understand how important it is to our customers that they receive excellent customer service whether buying or selling a car,” says Monte. “We want to end every day believing that we have done our very best to satisfy each customer before they leave the America’s Auto Auction facility. Our entire staff is dedicated to making it happen.”

Warren Simms and Glenn Simms in the Re-Bath of Tulsa showroom. do-it-yourself adventures and mishaps, Re-Bath of Tulsa is there to make things right. Bathrooms aren’t just Re-Bath’s specialty – they’re all Re-Bath does. And in the bathroom, they do just about

wainscoting. Re-Bath offers a wide selection of products, including tile, tubs, shower bases and wall systems in a variety of styles and colors, plus a large selection of coordinating accessories. Re-Bath also does

vanity cabinets and tops, shower spas and flooring, with a wide range of faucets, showerheads, stools and flooring options. Locally owned, Re-Bath of Tulsa was founded in 1993, and in that time has served over 6,000 customers. Re-Bath is a member of the Home Builder Association and the Better Business Bureau, and all ReBath products come with a lifetime warranty. Re-Bath of Tulsa is the qualifying party for all the licenses that Re-Bath operates under. Owner Glenn Simms is a licensed plumber and residential building contractor, and Re-Bath of Tulsa’s other lead installers are licensed as well. The company carries general liability insurance for both commercial and residential properties. Re-Bath is the only bathroom remodeler in America that offers products made from DuraBath Solid State Polymer, an acrylic material guaranteed never to chip, crack or peel. DuraBath SSP is non-porous, which makes it highly resistant to mold, mildew and bacteria, and it’s also very easy to clean. Re-Bath got started over 30 years ago putting new tub and shower liners over existing tubs.

But Re-Bath of Tulsa doesn’t do that anymore. “We do only complete tub and shower remodels,” says Glenn. “We don’t cover your old one. We don’t cover the problem, the mold, or the mildew – we get rid of it. And we still do most jobs in just one day.” Safety tubs are one of their specialties: as many people age, they find that getting into and out of a regular bathtub becomes increasingly difficult, and a safety tub may be the solution. “A lot of us are thinking about our parents as they get older, and converting a bathtub into a walk-in safety tub or a shower can be a great way to give them greater independence and enable them to stay in their homes longer,” says Simms. “We also offer assisted showers and seats – all products that are user-friendly and safe.” Re-Bath’s showroom, where you can see samples of all their products, including the DuraBath SSP, plus a number of full bathroom mockups, is located at 6570 E 41st St., across from Home Depot. The showroom is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to

DDoes Weight Loss Surgery Work? This is a question Dr. Ladd Atkins, D.O., bariatric surgeon for Lap-Band® Center of Oklahoma gets asked quite often. By Derek and Becky Taylor There are various types of weight loss surgery. Which type of surgery is right for you depends on your health, doctor’s advice, weight loss goals, and what is covered by your insurance plan. The Lap-Band® Center of Oklahoma uses only the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System by Allergan. According to Dr. Atkins, “It is by far the safest weight loss surgery device on the market today.” Dr. Atkins explains that the LAP-BAND® System is much safer than stomach stapling or gastric bypass surgery because it’s minimally invasive, using laparoscopy. This process is the least invasive way to use surgery to reduce the amount of food the stomach can hold. “It’s less invasive than gall bladder surgery,” Dr. Adkins explains. The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System restricts how much the stomach can hold by placing an adjustable band around the upper part of the stomach. There is no cutting or stapling needed to divide the upper stomach pouch from the lower stomach. The result is that

Brent Bailey has lost 160 pounds after his gastric banding surgery utilizing the Lap-Band® AP System by Allergan. patients take in less food. Yet at the same time, the stomach digests nutrients and calories in a normal way. The ideal patient has a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or higher with at least one comorbidity (secondary disorder or disease), which typically includes type II diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis.

The patient generally wants to lose 80 to 100 pounds and is motivated to lose the weight. The benefits of having the surgery include 50 to 80 percent excess weight loss, high success rate, it’s adjustable, can reverse type II diabetes, quick recovery time, and is totally reversible. The surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis but

sometimes involves an overnight stay. Patients are up and walking within hours of the surgery. “It is our goal for the patient to succeed,” states Roberta Wagle, bariatric coordinator. “After the surgery, I follow up with the patient regularly, set up support group meetings, and answer any questions they have.” Follow-ups are essential to achieving one’s weight loss goals and are generally done four to six weeks apart. According to Dr. Atkins, “Your follow-up meeting is always with me and generally involves measuring your weight loss against your goals and a slight adjustment of your LAP-BAND®, if needed. We want to get you into the ‘green zone’ (optimal band adjustment area). Patients that are well-followed and well-adjusted have an 80 percent or better chance of achieving their weight loss goals. We want you to feel like you’re part of a family on your weight loss journey.” Success stories abound. One story involves Brent Bailey, singles pastor at Rhema Bible Church in Broken Arrow. Brent had been overweight all his life. You name the diet and he tried

it. He would lose a little weight and then gain it back, often with a few extra pounds. Brent had read about the LAP-BAND® System and decided the time was right in October of 2009. “In less than a month after the surgery, I was off my medications,” he says. “This was the best decision I ever made!” Fifteen months later, Brent had lost 160 pounds. And he has never felt or looked better. Brent now goes to the Lap-Band® Center of Oklahoma for periodic adjustments and attends the bi-monthly seminars, when time permits, to share his experience with others. Free seminars are held the second and fourth Thursday of the month to introduce the procedure to prospective patients and answer their questions. “If you are seriously overweight, at least go to the seminar,” says Brent. The LAP-BAND® System by Allergan is FDA approved for patients with a BMI of 30 and above. It is the only adjustable gastric banding system to have received that approval level. AAffordable Family Fun Budget-conscious families are investing in RVs for exciting yet affordable vacations. By Lorrie Ward Often during tough economic times, such as the country has experienced in recent years, vacation dollars are one of the first things to be slashed from the family budget. But why get rid of vacations altogether when you can simply make them more affordable, sacrificing much of the cost and none of the fun? All over America, people are finding the answer to this question by joining the evergrowing number of RV owners and taking the family vacation back, one mile at a time. That’s why Dave Pierce, owner of Dave’s Claremore RV, reports that not only has his business grown over the last three decades to be the largest RV dealer in the state, but he expects this year to generate his largest revenues ever. “That’s pretty incredible considering the economy,” says Dave, who cites both the ease of RV travel and the lower cost versus other types of vacation lodging and entertainment as reasons for this explosive growth. With airlines tightening security and increasing baggage cost, Dave reports that people are “turned off” by that type of

Dave Pierce, owner of Dave’s Claremore RV, and his daughter Stephanie.

travel right now. However, people are valuing quality time with their families more than ever before. “People like long holidays, and the RV lifestyle fits in with that,” Dave points out. “You have a clean bed and bath, access to your own things, and you can take your pets with you.” These advantages factor into cost savings as well – no large hotel bills and no trips to the pet kennel with RV travel. Many amenities are available on certain RV models in addition to refrigerator, air, heat and shower, such televisions and outside stereos. Technology has made setting up your own “home away from home” easier than ever before with electric awnings, electric stabilizer jacks, and electric tongue jacks. “You don’t have to crank anything up anymore,” Dave says. To illustrate the lower cost of an RV vacation, Dave compares a typical weekend at the lake in an RV to a family of four outing to the movies on a Saturday night. “When you go to the movies, you are going to spend at least $50 – more if you get soft drinks and popcorn,” he says. “You spend less than that for a weekend hookup for your

RV at the lake, where you spend two days as opposed to two hours.” For a $125-a-month payment, a family could obtain a nice travel trailer for these weekend vacations. “I know people who spend more than that on their cable or satellite TV,” Dave adds. “And it’s less than a car payment.” In fact, he goes further to point out that for the same price as a typical car payment, a family could get a mini motor home. Taking all of these factors into account, Dave has one word of “caution” for anyone who wants to join the growing ranks of RV owners: be prepared to get hooked. “Most people who get an RV don’t give it up until they cannot physically travel anymore,” he says. “People fall in love with this lifestyle. It’s hard to give up.”

Customers may either receive 15 percent off their bill, or Andrew will donate 15 percent to “the Cure.” Andrew’s mother and aunt are both breast cancer survivors, and he has family members who have passed away from the disease. “Breast cancer awareness and research is very near to my heart, and I am so grateful to be able to donate a portion of the company’s proceeds to Susan G. Komen For the Cure,” he says. Andrew’s company has always been people-focused. “Whether your home is worth $20,000 or $4 million, we take pride in giving every single one

of our customers the best service possible,” he says. “We are complete and thorough with all our jobs, and we welcome meticulous customers with high expectations. Our work is truly our best form of advertising.” The company specializes in landscape design and management and tree services, and provides many other services as well. Customers always deal directly with the owner. “I speak with every client personally. We also have a great loyal crew that really knows what they’re doing. They’ve been with Lawns By Nature for up to 13 years.” The business philosophy of loyalty applies to customers as well. “We work hard to build a trust with our clients. Communication with them is our top priority,” says Andrew. “We don’t lose accounts. We make sure that once you’ve worked with us, you are 100 percent satisfied and want to continue using our services.” Now is the perfect time to beautify your outside space with flower installation and landscape design. “We offer multiple types

of flowers, and we deal directly with the growers,” says Andrew. If storms cause damage to your trees, Lawns By Nature offers advantages over tree companies. “Because we’re a full landscape company that offers tree services, we are able to offer landscape maintenance with our proposal regarding tree work.” This time of year is filled with celebrations. If you’re planning a summer blowout, baby or bridal shower, or wedding reception at your home, Lawns By Nature can do a complete cleanup of your yard. “We call this ‘Weed Pull-N,’ Okie talk for landscape cleanup.” Andrew has been doing landscaping since he was 12 years old. His company’s goal is to continuously raise the bar on service in the landscape industry. “We want our work to always exceed our customers’ expectations,” says Andrew. “We don’t believe in competition – we believe in outdoing our personal best every time.” Lawns By Nature’s landscaping services include design, installation, mainte-

They offer commercial mowing services, leaf removal, debris hauling, and tree trimming, pruning and removal. They also do retaining walls, boulderscape, hardscape, concrete sidewalks, porches and driveways, French drains, and sprinkler repair. Lawns By Nature services both commercial and residential properties, and they work by the job, by the visit, or with a yearly contract. “We work with homeowner and property owner associations, large and small apartments, and we love to work with churches,” adds Andrew. Maybe you’re unsure about hiring a landscape company because you think you can’t

afford it. “Give us a call. Don’t assume that because our services are so diversified that we’re not competitively priced. We’re eager to earn your business,” says Andrew. Lawns By Nature has an excellent A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. You can see samples of their work at www.lawnsbynature.com. Lawns By Nature now accepts Visa, MasterCard and Discover. When you visit with Andrew, don’t forget to congratulate him on his baby girl due in August!

Are You at a Loss for Insurance Options? The Holmes Organisation recently launched a technology system allowing employers and employees to participate in defined contribution health plans.

By Sheryl Sowell The Holmes Organisation recently announced the launch of a private exchange technology system that provides employers and employees the ability to participate in one of the fastestgrowing trends in health insurance – defined contribution health plans. Like the 401k transition of years ago, this trend will continue as group insurance plans become less and less viable due to cost and regulations. According to Mike “Zig” Ziegenhorn of The Holmes Organisation, a defined contribution health plan is an important alternative to traditional group health plans for those who can no longer qualify for or afford them, and they are growing rapidly in popularity. Rather than paying a portion or all of a premium, under a defined contribution health plan, an employer can offer no contribution at all or if preferred, set aside a fixed dollar amount each month for employees to use to pay for their choice of individual health insurance or other medical costs such as doctor visits, dental insurance, and prescription drugs, often on a pre-tax basis.

Jim Millaway and Mike Ziegenhorn of The Holmes Organisation. This approach allows even the smallest of businesses to offer their employees quality health-related benefits, while maximizing the IRS-approved benefits of tax savings for both the employer and employees. James Millaway of The Holmes Organisation explains that these plans are an excellent alternative for restaurants, small familyowned businesses, staffing companies, and those who do part time or contract work. “The problem we see from an insurance perspective is that

many people are without access to employer provided insurance,” said Millaway. “This plan is not one size fits all, but there are so many people who can receive long-term benefits from it.” Employees participating in a defined contribution program through their employer are directed to The Holmes Organisation private exchange website, where they can compare and select a policy from among a variety of individual health plans being offered by health insurers in the Tulsa and northeast

Oklahoma area.Visit the private exchange website and compare your plan options at exchange.theholmesorg.com. Zig wants to let area businesses know that the private exchange is a tool that provides employees with more choice and makes it possible to more effectively provide services to large numbers of individuals and their families rather than employer groups. Employees can choose to be connected to live experts, licensed in all 50 states, who can provide them the best options for their family regardless of pre-existing conditions or budget. “We reach out to everyone who visits the website,” said Millaway. “The site is user friendly, but we’re here to help people understand all of their options.” Experts will look for the right plan in four different markets: 1. Personal health plans– all the major carriers, medically underwritten 2. Short-term medical plans– fewer UW requirements, lower cost 3. State & federal risk pools– must qualify, guaranteed issue 4. Limited benefit plans– low-cost options, guaranteed issue

The Private Exchange is not limited to just health insurance solutions, although that is the greatest concern for most employers and employees. “We have experts available in life insurance, long-term care insurance, Medicare supplements, voluntary benefits (accident, critical illness, hospital indemnity), and even property and casualty insurance,” said Zig. Forward thinking employers have already begun adopting The Holmes Organisation’s solution to their benefits challenges. Early adopters to this model are finding it to be the perfect solution, especially if they had given up on offering their employees any type of benefits. “Now you can offer access to individually-owned, selected benefits at little or no cost to you the employer. In fact, many are seeing savings and no financial obligations,” added Zig. More information about defined contribution plans and The Holmes Organisation services can be found at www.theholmesorg.com. 22012 Fireworks Flashier and Safer The Castle of Muskogee offers 37,000 square feet of high-quality fireworks.

Guidelines for Fireworks Safety

By Renee Profitt The Castle of Muskogee, Oklahoma’s 37,000-square-foot fireworks showroom keeps working to improve everyone’s enjoyment on the Fourth. Although the Castle of Muskogee has always guaranteed all fireworks to light, the new, higher quality means no disappointments on the Fourth. “A new ‘look’ in fireworks for 2012 is the ‘jellyfish’ effect, which is inspired by the Time Bandit – Deadliest Catch show,” says Matt Hiller, vice president of the Castle. “Basically, the aerial displays feature jiggly ‘tentacles’ tracing sparks across the sky – it’s a spectacular display!” For better safety, the Castle joined the American Fireworks Standards Laboratory several years ago. AFSL is an independent testing organization that inspects fireworks before they leave China to assure safety. All fireworks, of course, must also pass inspection by the Consumer Product Safety Commission once they get to the United States. The new inspections procedures have resulted in a dramatic decrease in fireworks-related incidents in the U.S., even though fireworks imports have increased by many tons!

The quantity and selection this year at the Castle must be seen to be believed: imagine a football field covered with fireworks as high as you can reach

all under one roof, and you’ll get an idea of what awaits you in Muskogee. The Castle, of course, is air conditioned, with accessible restrooms and plenty

of paved parking at the door. The annual fireworks sale lasts from June 15 through July 6. Hours are: June 15–30, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; July 1–4, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and July 5-6, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Castle of Muskogee has fireworks to please anyone, with prices for every budget. There are fireworks for smaller children plus more than 400 items for teens and adults including the largest selection in America of heavyweight and multi-action displays. Select from many versions of specially-priced Family Packs to get the most bang for your buck. Over a quarter-million people visit the Castle each year for a variety of events including the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival, Haunted Castle, Christmas Kingdom, plus many weddings, private and corporate events. When you can shop in a Castle, why shop anywhere else? For more information, contact

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Council on Fireworks Safety offer the following safety checklist: • Always read and follow label directions. • Have an adult present. • Buy from reliable sellers. • Use outdoors only. • Always have water handy (a garden hose and a bucket). • Never experiment or make your own fireworks. • Light only one firework at a time. • Never re-light a “dud” firework (wait 15 minutes then soak it in water). • Never give fireworks to small children. • If necessary, store fireworks in a cool, dry place. • Dispose of fireworks by soaking them in water before putting in the trash. • Never throw or point fireworks at other people. • Never carry fireworks in your pocket. • Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers. • The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the firework. • Stay away from illegal explosives.

Welcome to Town, Discount Mike! continued from page 1 like it ought to be done, the first time, every time. While working for Goodyear Tire & Rubber when he was a young man, Mike was dubbed “Discount Mike” by his boss, because he was good about pointing out to each customer exactly what was needed to get them back on the road in good running order, and he did it at a fair and reasonable price. By word of mouth, customers heard about him and began coming into the store and actually asking for “Discount Mike.” Mike always liked the nickname, and when he went into business for himself in 2005, it was a natural choice that the business be called Discount Mike’s Tire & Automotive. Mike was drawn from Virginia to Oklahoma to go to school at Victory Bible Institute, and it was there he met his wife to be. Some of the featured manufacturers you’ll find at Discount Mike’s include tires by Firestone, Bridgestone, Michelin, BF Goodrich, Uniroyal, and National (by Cooper). He carries, or can order, literally any brand of tire you desire, because he is a member of a National Buying Group of Independent Dealers. This allows members to buy and sell to the public at great prices and enables them to competitively price their products to compete with the box stores. Discount Mike’s has access to tires for trucks, cars, tractors, and lawn and garden equipment tires. The official opening date for

continued from page 1

Discount Mike’s in Glenpool was June 25. “We’re here to provide tire and automotive service throughout the area. We want to get involved in Glenpool and give back to the community and schools in any way we can,” said Mike. Discount Mike’s is conveniently located in Glenpool on Highway 75. The store offers the latest in tire technology and the services needed to keep your car or truck looking good and running well. If ever you have a tire or automotive problem, Discount Mike can get you on the road again quickly and affordably. When asked by a friend about opening the new Discount Mike’s in Glenpool, Mike stated, “I love hanging out by the pool – Glenpool that is!” Stop by Discount Mike’s even if you don’t need tires or automotive services right now. Just come in and say hello and welcome Mike to the community. He looks forward to the opportunity to serve you and would truly enjoy meeting his new neighbors face to face.

DDouble Play on Knee Pain A local Division II umpire hit a “home run” with two knee replacement surgeries from Dr. LaButti. By Duane Blankenship George Dudasko always had a passion for baseball. As a young adult, he umpired little league games and then graduated up the ranks to become a Division II college baseball umpire. Because of pain in both knees and resulting physical limitations, George gave up umpiring 15 years ago. In 2006, George began researching knee replacement surgery. He visited with several sports contacts and then read an article about knee replacement surgeries performed by Dr. Ronald S. LaButti. He made an appointment with the doctor in 2007. After evaluation, Dr. LaButti recommended replacement surgery for both of George’s knees. His right knee was the worst, having been boneon-bone for seven years. Dr. LaButti told George, “Let me know when the pain becomes unbearable and when you can make time for the surgery and recommended recovery period.” George was born bowlegged, his right leg being the worse of the two. He loved sports and had participated in football, wrestling, and baseball since youth. “The knee pains became constant and more intense. It was sheer agony

climbing stairs,” said George. “Even crossing a busy street, I had to carefully plan ahead, calculating the flow of traffic because my walking pace had become very slow and agonizing. I couldn’t even sit naturally because of the intense pain.” As a project engineer and always on the go, George found it difficult planning a time convenient for surgery and rehabilitation. However, while in transit between job functions, George was able to schedule surgery with Dr. LaButti to replace his right knee in June of 2010. Dr. LaButti asked George what his goals and expectations were following surgery and without hesitation George responded, “To again be able to umpire at the Division II level.” Surgery on George’s right knee went extremely well. He did home therapy for four weeks and outpatient therapy for another four weeks. At the first meeting with his assigned therapist, George was asked again what he expected to be doing after rehab. After relating his umpiring goal, his therapist did her homework by watching baseball games on TV to assess the physical require-

ments of umpires. She then custom tailored a rehabilitation program for George. “Therapy sessions were painful,” he said, “but at the conclusion of each one, I felt great seeing the progress I was making.” After only six weeks following surgery, George was released to go back to work. George had his second knee replacement surgery on his left knee in September, 2010. An interesting sidebar from his surgeries: Dr. LaButti straightened both legs during surgery. After the right leg was corrected, it was one-half inch longer than the left, and George was fitted with a lift for his left shoe. When the left knee was replaced, that leg was also straightened and made equal in length to the right leg. Having walked “duck footed” for most of his life, both of George’s feet now point forward and he is no longer bowlegged. He is also one-half inch taller than he has ever been in his life! In less than six months after his second knee surgery, George was again umpiring Division II baseball. Last year, he umpired over 300 games in the Midwest and Florida. In March of this year, he headed back to Florida

George Dudasko’s goal was to become physically able to resume duties as a Division II umpire. Robotic Assisted Total Knee Replacement Available exclusively with Dr. Ronald LaButti

This brand-new technology produces a 3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, the iBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well. When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between the implant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precise measurements made dynamically in real time. There are only five “iBlock” units in the United States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.

RRock and Mineral Show Is a Real Gem Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society’s “Rockhound Treasures Show” will be held July 14-15, 2012 at Expo Square in Tulsa.

By Sheryl Sowell Vivid colors, stunning shapes and intricate designs are often the foundation for the most beautiful and moving artwork. If you’ve never truly experienced the breathtaking natural art of rocks, minerals and gemstones, mark your calendar now for the “Rockhound Treasures Show,” July 14-15 in Exchange Center 1 at Tulsa Expo Square. The show is presented by the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society (TRMS). Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society craftspeople will be flint knapping, cutting and polishing rocks, beading, wire wrapping, and demonstrating other lapidary techniques. Many club members will be exhibiting their collections of fossils, rocks and minerals, gemstones, and finished crafted pieces, along with educational exhibits from across the Midwest. Twenty vendors will offer finished jewelry as well as equipment and supplies, beads and other items. A silent auction and hourly door prizes will be ongoing throughout both days. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 14 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 15. Admission is $6 for adults,

ages 12 and under free. “This is an event you won’t want to miss, with spectacular natural art to view and purchase,” says TRMS member Kay Waterman. Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society began in 1958 as an educational non-profit organization. The club promotes interest in collecting rocks, minerals,

fossils and artifacts, working with the lapidary arts, and sharing knowledge about the earth sciences. TRMS awards an annual earth sciences scholarship and supports local schools with hands-on rock and fossil programs. Members enjoy classes at the club workshop, including the faceting classes taught by

Roger Bush, director and curator of Elsing Museum: God’s Natural Art Museum, holds a meteor rock with Paulino and Julia Allende, long-time members of the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society.

Elmer Kitchell, a club member who has been faceting gemstones for more than 40 years. TRMS also hosts weekend collecting and educational field trips. Monthly meetings are held at the Central Library downtown. For more information, see the club website at www.ttownrockhound.org. The Rock and Mineral Show is the group’s premiere event, held annually to showcase their unusual fossil and mineral displays and sell products relating to their hobby. TRMS will also offer educational programs at the show, as well as a free hands-on earth science project area for kids. TRMS’s main headquarters is the Elsing Museum at Oral Roberts University, a hidden gem in itself. “Visiting the Elsing Museum: God’s Natural Art Museum is a unique experience for exploring fascinating specimens that provide a glimpse into the past and information about the foundations of this world we inhabit,” says Roger Bush, museum director and curator. The museum comprises an extensively rare collection – over 3,000 samples of some of the world’s most amazing gems,

minerals, natural art, petrified wood, Indian artifacts, oriental artifacts, and so much more. “Part of our collection contains minerals and rocks that were found in the Tri-State Mines. These mines are now closed, which makes visiting this museum a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” says Roger. Guided tours are offered for groups as well as for individual visits. The museum serves as an excellent supplement for classroom studies in geology, earth sciences and other related subjects. Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated. To view a spectacular display of “God’s Natural Art,” be sure to attend the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society’s “Rockhound Treasures Show,” July 14-15 at Expo Square. For more information, contact

LLower Your Utility Bills Community Builders offers customers great suggestions for efficient home improvement.

By Duane Blankenship Community Builders, Inc. President Greg Wolter founded the organization while working out of his home more than 30 years ago. The company does home remodeling throughout most of Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. They are not general contractors, but rather specialize in work they know best and do really well. That includes energy-efficient vinyl siding and replacement windows, SmartCoat spray-on siding, GutterProUSA gutter guard systems, sunrooms that are second to none, and metal roof systems. According to Greg, throughout their long history, Community Builders has impressed customers with their professionalism and dedication to customer service. “We’re grateful to be able to provide outstanding products and services to our clients and are thankful for the opportunity they’ve given us to earn their business,” he said. Now is a great time to be thinking about roofs. Greg says a common shingle has an average life expectancy of only seven years, and a quality, top-of-the-

line shingle should last about 11 years. Community Builders is currently featuring metal shingles and stone-coated metal shingles that carry 50-year labor and materials warranties. Yes, they cost more than run-of-themill composite shingles, but compare the life expectancies. Greg says that most insurance companies also discount premiums on homeowner policies up to 35 percent for stone-coated or metal roofs. “When we install our metal roofing products, we put a layer of insulation under the roof that should save customers money on both their heating and cooling utility bills,” he explained. When asked by customers how long he thinks a metal roof will really last, Greg answers, “I don’t know. We’ve only been in business for 30 years!” You’ll definitely want to check out Community Builders’ metal roof deals that will save you money on installation. You’ll also receive a Green Energy Barrier installed that employs advanced space age technology. With the Energy Barrier, Greg says customers can expect to save

from 20 to 40 percent on cooling bills and a little less on heating. Community also offers 12 months “same as cash” or easy low payment plans to suit you and your budget. “When you install a traditional shingle to your home, it does nothing to improve the home’s value,” says Greg. “With Community Builders’ metal or stone-coated metal shingles, your home’s value will improve.” Some of the other quality products you’ll find at Community Builders include Jacuzzi walk-in tubs, custom-built sunrooms that let you enjoy the outdoors in comfort regardless of the weather or season, Cedar Ridge Vinyl Siding that provides your home with the look of freshly painted cedar without the upkeep of traditional wood siding, and Enviro View Premium Windows. These replacement windows are advertised to improve energy savings by up to 40 percent with their energy-efficient design that is airtight, reflects hot summer air, and locks out cool air during the worst of winter; plus they are

If you’re thinking of remodeling to make your house a dream home, rest assured that Community Builders is a professional and respected organization. You can review their record with the Better Business Bureau and the Greater Tulsa Home Builders Association. They have also been recognized by the National Association of Siding and Window Dealers with the highly coveted Business Ethics Award.
