LLow-Cost Healthcare Grassroots Healthcare provides medical services at an affordable cost for those without insurance. By Lorrie Ward Sometimes to deal with a problem, you have to go right to the root of things. That’s why Dr. Melita Tate expresses this desire for the future of healthcare in America: “I would love a few years from now for the history books to show that patients and doctors joined together and solved the medical problems without the government or insurance companies.” This vision of Dr. Tate’s didn’t materialize by accident. Over the years, she has witnessed the mountains of red tape involved between doctors, patients, insurance companies and the government. And just as uncoiled tape tangles together into a big, time-consuming mess, so has this situation. “Doctors can’t get to patients anymore,” says Dr. Tate, “because the doctor has to spend so much time on things like insurance codes, which differ from company to company and are changed all the time.” Because of all these complications, Dr. Tate explains that medical costs also go up because doctors have to hire so much extra staff to deal with billing and insurance issues. That’s why Grassroots

Healthcare keeps it simple, with affordable fees which are posted up front and are due at time of service. “We want to keep our healthcare facility free from government and insurance influence,” she says. “This helps us keep prices far lower.” To illustrate just how much lower, Dr. Tate recalls a situation in which she sent a patient to have lab work done at a place used by other doctors as well. Somehow, though, the patient’s insurance company was accidentally billed by the lab for the procedure and a detailed statement was sent to the patient. The matter was rectified quickly, and neither he nor the insurance company had to pay any further costs. However, both Dr. Tate and the patient were amazed by how all the channels

On May 7, Grassroots Healthcare celebrated its one year anniversary, and Dr. Tate says response to their type of service has grown recently. “I had a physician friend in Texas who opened this kind of clinic and was very happy with it, so we decided to give it a try,” she says. “I love what I’m doing here. I never look at the clock at the end of the day and think, ‘I have this much time before I get to go home.’ I have great job satisfaction, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

the Right Key CCamp to Success The Oklahoma Jazz Camp takes place July 9-13 at the University of Tulsa. By Lorrie Ward The Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and the University of Tulsa are once again joining forces to present Oklahoma Jazz Camp, a week-long day camp held Monday, July 9 through Friday, July 13 and culminating in a 3 p.m. showcase concert on Saturday, July 14. The camp is for instrumental and vocal music students ranging in age from ninth grade through college and in all levels of musical experience and skill, and will be held on campus at the University of Tulsa. This is the third year for the camp, which was started by Professor Vernon Howard at TU when he retired from summer teaching at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen, Michigan. “Between 1975 and 2009, I served as director of jazz studies at Interlochen and recognized the value of offering a specialized camp for gifted and focused students,” says Howard. “Many of my former Interlochen students have gone on to forge successful performing and teaching careers,

including Byron Stripling, lead trumpet with Count Basie Orchestra; Conrad Herwig, trombonist and leader of the Mingus Big Band as well as the director of jazz studies at Rutgers University; Tim Ries, saxophonist with the Rolling Stones; Walter White, trumpeter with Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra; Eldar Djangirov, jazz pianist and Sony recording artist; and Norah Jones, Grammy Award winning singer, pianist and songwriter.” Coweta vocalist Sarah Richardson is a veteran of Oklahoma Jazz Camp. She studied jazz composition for a year after attending the camp and then went on to earn a music major scholarship at TU. Sarah has her own band, performs professionally in jazz clubs, concerts, and at private functions in the Tulsa area. “She is recognized as being one of the most talented and versatile singing talents to come out of the Tulsa metro area in years,” says Howard. “I am very proud of her and excited about the

prospects for her blossoming professional career.” Sarah was among the original 30 students enrolled the first year of Oklahoma Jazz Camp. The number increased to 45 the second summer as word got around. This year, Howard expects at least 50 to 60 students and has added three new faculty positions, as well as additional staff for counseling and teaching, in anticipation of this number. A new class, “Blues Exploration,” has been added to the curriculum this year as well, and will explore the blues and its many styles. Howard is excited to be able to once again work with the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame to offer this great learning experience for budding artists. “I enjoy the entire process of designing the camp curriculum, talking with prospective students, selecting music, teaching classes and directing the final showcase concert,” he says. “The great reward comes after years have passed and you can look back and see that the camp

RRock and Mineral Show Is a Real Gem Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society’s “Rockhound Treasures Show” will be held July 14-15, 2012 at Expo Square in Tulsa.

By Sheryl Sowell Vivid colors, stunning shapes and intricate designs are often the foundation for the most beautiful and moving artwork. If you’ve never truly experienced the breathtaking natural art of rocks, minerals and gemstones, mark your calendar now for the “Rockhound Treasures Show,” July 14-15 in Exchange Center 1 at Tulsa Expo Square. The show is presented by the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society (TRMS). Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society craftspeople will be flint knapping, cutting and polishing rocks, beading, wire wrapping, and demonstrating other lapidary techniques. Many club members will be exhibiting their collections of fossils, rocks and minerals, gemstones, and finished crafted pieces, along with educational exhibits from across the Midwest. Twenty vendors will offer finished jewelry as well as equipment and supplies, beads and other items. A silent auction and hourly door prizes will be ongoing throughout both days. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 14 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 15. Admission is $6 for adults,

ages 12 and under free. “This is an event you won’t want to miss, with spectacular natural art to view and purchase,” says TRMS member Kay Waterman. Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society began in 1958 as an educational non-profit organization. The club promotes interest in collecting rocks, minerals,

fossils and artifacts, working with the lapidary arts, and sharing knowledge about the earth sciences. TRMS awards an annual earth sciences scholarship and supports local schools with hands-on rock and fossil programs. Members enjoy classes at the club workshop, including the faceting classes taught by

Elmer Kitchell, a club member who has been faceting gemstones for more than 40 years. TRMS also hosts weekend collecting and educational field trips. The Rock and Mineral Show is the group’s premiere event, held annually to showcase their unusual fossil and mineral displays and sell products relating to their hobby. TRMS will also offer educational programs at the show, as well as a free hands-on earth science project area for kids. TRMS’s main headquarters is the Elsing Museum at Oral Roberts University, a hidden gem in itself. “Visiting the Elsing Museum: God’s Natural Art Museum is a unique experience for exploring fascinating specimens that provide a glimpse into the past and information about the foundations of this world we inhabit,” says Roger Bush, museum director and curator. The museum comprises an extensively rare collection – over 3,000 samples of some of the world’s most amazing gems,

minerals, natural art, petrified wood, Indian artifacts, oriental artifacts, and so much more. “Part of our collection contains minerals and rocks that were found in the Tri-State Mines. These mines are now closed, which makes visiting this museum a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” says Roger. Guided tours are offered for groups as well as for individual visits. The museum serves as an excellent supplement for classroom studies in geology, earth sciences and other related subjects. Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated. Admission is free, and organizers say there truly is something for the entire family to enjoy. The reason for the birth of the festival 28 years ago is the Whole Hawg Days BBQ competition, according to Jimmie Phelan, executive director of Eufaula Area Chamber of Commerce. “This is a great way to prove just how good you can really cook that barbecue,” she said. The cook-off is set for Saturday, July 28, with judging beginning at 3 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded, and the public is invited to sample all of the competitors’ cooking for free, Phelan said.

DDoes Weight Loss Surgery Work? This is a question Dr. Ladd Atkins, D.O., bariatric surgeon for Lap-Band® Center of Oklahoma gets asked quite often. By Derek and Becky Taylor There are various types of weight loss surgery. Which type of surgery is right for you depends on your health, doctor’s advice, weight loss goals, and what is covered by your insurance plan. The Lap-Band® Center of Oklahoma uses only the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System by Allergan. According to Dr. Atkins, “It is by far the safest weight loss surgery device on the market today.” Dr. Atkins explains that the LAP-BAND® System is much safer than stomach stapling or gastric bypass surgery because it’s minimally invasive, using laparoscopy. This process is the least invasive way to use surgery to reduce the amount of food the stomach can hold. “It’s less invasive than gall bladder surgery,” Dr. Adkins explains. The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System restricts how much the stomach can hold by placing an adjustable band around the upper part of the stomach. There is no cutting or stapling needed to divide the upper stomach pouch from the lower stomach. The result is that

sometimes involves an overnight stay. Patients are up and walking within hours of the surgery. “It is our goal for the patient to succeed,” states Roberta Wagle, bariatric coordinator. “After the surgery, I follow up with the patient regularly, set up support group meetings, and answer any questions they have.” Follow-ups are essential to achieving one’s weight loss goals and are generally done four to six weeks apart. According to Dr. Atkins, “Your follow-up meeting is always with me and generally involves measuring your weight loss against your goals and a slight adjustment of your LAP-BAND®, if needed. We want to get you into the ‘green zone’ (optimal band adjustment area). Patients that are well-followed and well-adjusted have an 80 percent or better chance of achieving their weight loss goals. The ideal patient has a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or higher with at least one comorbidity (secondary disorder or disease), which typically includes type II diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis.

The patient generally wants to lose 80 to 100 pounds and is motivated to lose the weight. DDouble Play on Knee Pain A local Division II umpire hit a “home run” with two knee replacement surgeries from Dr. LaButti. By Duane Blankenship George Dudasko always had a passion for baseball. As a young adult, he umpired little league games and then graduated up the ranks to become a Division II college baseball umpire. Because of pain in both knees and resulting physical limitations, George gave up umpiring 15 years ago. In 2006, George began researching knee replacement surgery. He visited with several sports contacts and then read an article about knee replacement surgeries performed by Dr. Ronald S. LaButti. He made an appointment with the doctor in 2007. After evaluation, Dr. LaButti recommended replacement surgery for both of George’s knees. His right knee was the worst, having been boneon-bone for seven years. Dr. LaButti told George, “Let me know when the pain becomes unbearable and when you can make time for the surgery and recommended recovery period.” George was born bowlegged, his right leg being the worse of the two. He loved sports and had participated in football, wrestling, and baseball since youth. “The knee pains became constant and more intense. It was sheer agony

climbing stairs,” said George. “Even crossing a busy street, I had to carefully plan ahead, calculating the flow of traffic because my walking pace had become very slow and agonizing. I couldn’t even sit naturally because of the intense pain.” As a project engineer and always on the go, George found it difficult planning a time convenient for surgery and rehabilitation. However, while in transit between job functions, George was able to schedule surgery with Dr. LaButti to replace his right knee in June of 2010. Dr. LaButti asked George what his goals and expectations were following surgery and without hesitation George responded, “To again be able to umpire at the Division II level.” Surgery on George’s right knee went extremely well. He did home therapy for four weeks and outpatient therapy for another four weeks. At the first meeting with his assigned therapist, George was asked again what he expected to be doing after rehab. After relating his umpiring goal, his therapist did her homework by watching baseball games on TV to assess the physical require-

ments of umpires. She then custom tailored a rehabilitation program for George. “Therapy sessions were painful,” he said, “but at the conclusion of each one, I felt great seeing the progress I was making.” After only six weeks following surgery, George was released to go back to work. George had his second knee replacement surgery on his left knee in September, 2010. An interesting sidebar from his surgeries: Dr. LaButti straightened both legs during surgery. After the right leg was corrected, it was one-half inch longer than the left, and George was fitted with a lift for his left shoe. When the left knee was replaced, that leg was also straightened and made equal in length to the right leg. Having walked “duck footed” for most of his life, both of George’s feet now point forward and he is no longer bowlegged. He is also one-half inch taller than he has ever been in his life! In less than six months after his second knee surgery, George was again umpiring Division II baseball. Last year, he umpired over 300 games in the Midwest and Florida. In March of this year, he headed back to Florida

George Dudasko’s goal was to become physically able to resume duties as a Division II umpire. After two successful knee replacements by Dr. LaButti, George is back on the diamond. for two weeks of umpiring during college baseball spring training. The 46th annual Porter Peach Festival will offer lots of good old-fashioned fun and games, carnival rides, live entertainment, food vendors, and bushels of scrumptious peaches. The event kicks off Thursday, July 19 at 4 p.m. Long-time festival chairman Roy Essary will welcome the crowd with a prayer and an overview of the schedule of events. Next up is the annual Peach Pageant, in which the lovely contestants compete for the titles of Miss Peach, Miss Peach Blossom and Miss Peach Bud. The pageant will be followed by live entertainment until 11 p.m. The Southern States Show Carnival, taking place throughout the festival, will be open that evening also. The festival resumes Friday at 11 a.m. with arts and crafts booths, food vendors, and an antique tractor pull. At 5 p.m. will be a live newscast, along with the start of the traditional street games, including a turtle race, frog-jumping contest, nail drive and balloon toss. The Pet

Show begins at 5:45 p.m., and prizes will be awarded to the ugliest dog, best trick, best costume, fattest cat and most unusual pet. The day will also have a full entertainment lineup.

The day also includes the Classic Car Show, a peach cobbler contest, mud races, a parade and a peach auction. In conjunction with the festival, Saturday is also Play Night at the Porter

By Lorrie Ward Often during tough economic times, such as the country has experienced in recent years, vacation dollars are one of the first things to be slashed from the family budget. But why get rid of vacations altogether when you can simply make them more affordable, sacrificing much of the cost and none of the fun? All over America, people are finding the answer to this question by joining the evergrowing number of RV owners and taking the family vacation back, one mile at a time. That’s why Dave Pierce, owner of Dave’s Claremore RV, reports that not only has his business grown over the last three decades to be the largest RV dealer in the state, but he expects this year to generate his largest revenues ever. “That’s pretty incredible considering the economy,” says Dave, who cites both the ease of RV travel and the lower cost versus other types of vacation lodging and entertainment as reasons for this explosive growth. Many amenities are available on certain RV models in addition to refrigerator, air, heat and shower, such televisions and outside stereos. Technology has made setting up your own “home away from home” easier than ever before with electric awnings, electric stabilizer jacks, and electric tongue jacks. “You don’t have to crank anything up anymore,” Dave says. To illustrate the lower cost of an RV vacation, Dave compares a typical weekend at the lake in an RV to a family of four outing to the movies on a Saturday night. “When you go to the movies, you are going to spend at least $50 – more if you get soft drinks and popcorn,” he says. “You spend less than that for a weekend hookup for your

RV at the lake, where you spend two days as opposed to two hours.” For a $125-a-month payment, a family could obtain a nice travel trailer for these weekend vacations. “I know people who spend more than that on their cable or satellite TV,” Dave adds. “And it’s less than a car payment.” In fact, he goes further to point out that for the same price as a typical car payment, a family could get a mini motor home. Taking all of these factors into account, Dave has one word of “caution” for anyone who wants to join the growing ranks of RV owners: be prepared to get hooked. “Most people who get an RV don’t give it up until they cannot physically travel anymore,” he says. “People fall in love with this lifestyle. It’s hard to give up.”
