Navigate the New Year in a Nissan Jim Glover recently opened the brand new Jim Glover Nissan, located east of Memorial on Skelly Drive. By Duane Blankenship

The Jim Glover automotive family has been serving Tulsa and surrounding communities since 1995. The most recent addition to the family is the all new Jim Glover Nissan, located off of Memorial on Skelly Drive, just east of Jim Glover Chevrolet. The doors officially opened in late November, and the dealership’s staff looks forward to serving you with a wide selection of new Nissan vehicles, quality preowned cars, trucks and SUVs, and a great service team. Steve Harrison serves as general manager for both Jim Glover Chevrolet and Nissan.

Jim Glover Fixed Operations Manager Chuck Zachariae says, “Our whole group is excited about having the great Glover name behind us. With the Jim Glover auto family you get the whole nine yards of experience and knowhow, helping to ensure the new operation’s success.” Additionally, Zachariae advised that the new dealership is excited to already be growing, with the addition of a new commercial department to serve the Tulsa area. Chuck is a Tulsa native with 20 years in the auto(continued on page 22)

Service Advisors Steven Benike and Jeff Been, Fixed Operations Manager Chuck Zachariae, and Service Advisors Richard Villegas and Paul Frailey look forward to assisting you on the service drive of the new Jim Glover Nissan in Tulsa.

Money’s Little Secrets come into play in your relationships with your spouse, children, extended family and friends? Who in your household makes decisions about money? Is what you are doing working for you?

BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Having been a marriage and family therapist and licensed professional counselor for 11 years and now in the wealth planning and investment business for more than 17 years, I can say I have some hours under my belt when it comes to understanding how people think and feel about their money. It is by far one of the most emotionally charged issues in many people’s lives. People fight about it, lose relationships with their spouses or other family members over it, incessantly worry about it, use it as a tool for power, feel guilty about it, and to top it off… it is often a taboo, off limits subject. It’s like a secret (hush, hush) dirty little subject that people aren’t supposed to talk about. When I meet with folks in my office, they often ask if their situation with money is “normal”. They ask because they have no other way of finding out because no one talks about it. So that is why I have decided to write this column. My intention is to break the silence and start a real discussion about the how, what, and why’s with people and their money.

Since it is the New Year, I thought I’d kick it off with throwing out some Financial New Year’s Resolutions. So here goes… 1) Resolve to become conscious of your financial state. In other words, know what debt you have, what interest you are paying on it, what your current expenses are, what your budget is, if you overspend and where, what investments you have and why, how much you are contributing to your retirement, is it going to be enough, open your statements! Become aware of your finances again. 2) Become aware of your relationship to money. What feelings do you have around money? (Fear, guilt, resentment, etc.) How does it

3) Take action. If you keep doing the same old thing, you are bound to keep getting what you always got. Many people are so afraid of making the wrong decision that they do nothing. Not making a decision is also a decision. Take action. Get all of your investments in one place. Have them reviewed by someone who knows what they are doing. Attend a seminar. Read a financial book. Stop hoping and start doing. Make this a great year! Happy New Year everyone. Resolve to Get Healthy Healthy eating and exercise habits are directly linked to oral health. By Dr. Steven White This is the time of year that many of us think about resolutions. Often they have to do with living a healthier lifestyle, working out regularly, going on a diet, or eating healthier. It’s hard to make a big lifestyle change, as studies have shown that very few New Year’s resolutions last more than 2 or 3 weeks. Old temptations and habits can make it difficult to make permanent, lifeenhancing changes. We see patients every day who have started exercising routines and/or diet regimens and stayed with it for months. The results are amazing! Their attitude is more positive, energy levels are improved, risk of disease is reduced and dental health is improved. I have talked before about the links that researchers have made

between periodontal (gum) disease and many systemic conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis (which leads to heart disease and strokes) and hypertension, to name a few. All of these disease states can selfcorrect or at least improve drastically with healthy dieting and exercise, and the need for medications is also reduced or eliminated. I recently saw a patient who has come in for regular checkups and cleanings for many years. They always had red, puffy gums and usually a cavity or two. It was discouraging for all involved. After months on a lowcarb, balanced diet, this patient has lost over 50 pounds, their energy levels have improved, and oral health is drastically improved. The gum tissue is a healthy pink color, there is no new decay, and plaque and calculus is much reduced. The bacteria that cause many of the health problems we have discussed seem to thrive on the unhealthy things that we eat. This is just another observation as to how everything ties together. Our nutrition and exercise habits enhance the body’s natural ability to fight infection by suppressing the “bad” bacteria and encouraging the health giving systems that are ready and able to help us live fuller, more productive and longer lives. So, make it your resolution to get healthy in 2016 and don’t forget that a big part of that is getting a cleaning and check-up from your dentist.

We can help you control your dental expenses if you don’t have dental insurance. Your best insurance is to have two cleanings and checkups per year. Our in-office membership program provides these at a greatly reduced rate, for less than your insurance premium would cost. Ask us about QDP (Quality Dental Plan) and get on the road to optimum dental health today.

No Insurance, No Problem! Quality Dentistry Made Affordable!

lished in 1998, and Dr. Carletti’s legacy continues today through his son, J. Andrew Carletti, DDS, and daughter, Cathy CarlettiDuPriest. Dr. Carletti is the organization’s director of education, and Cathy is part of the management team.

Norma Tyler and Karen Summers serve as school administrators, and Linda Pierce is the program instructor. This dental assisting course has been producing quality dental assistants by offering courses three times a year, in the spring, summer and fall, with two convenient class times. The hours of commitment are the same, whether enrollees attend Tuesday and Thursday evening classes for 14 weeks or Saturday classes for 10 weeks. A maximum of eight students per class is accepted, and all class times allow students to train for their exciting new careers while continuing to work at their current jobs. Dental Careers of Tulsa classes provide a foundation for dentistry, the necessary basics from which students can build their careers. Most advertised jobs for dental assistants require experience. With this dental assisting course, graduates should have both the confidence and skills required to apply for these positions. Part of the course training focuses on how to create a professional resume and introductory letter, how to prepare for a job interview, how to dress and what to say. In short, the course prepares graduates to stand out from the competition. Training session topics include a general introduction to dentistry, X-ray training, infection control, anatomy,

instruments and equipment of dentistry, oral surgery, and office management. According to Norma Tyler, “Our students complete a 40-hour internship, allowing them to have hands-on training in their field of interest.” Names of dentists who indicate that they are seeking qualified dental assistants are given to those enrolled in the program. Some may be offered jobs pending graduation. Upon completion of the dental assisting course, students are invited to rate the program and instructional personnel. “Students have historically given us very high ratings,” says Norma. “Our dental assistant instructor, Linda Pierce, is a highly experienced instructor and is absolutely wonderful.” If you think you’d be interested in working as a healthcare professional, check the website or contact Dental Careers of Tulsa for more information. Providing Much Knee-ded Help to Central America Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center surgeons provided free total joint replacements in a recent trip to El Salvador.

By Duane Blankenship

Two Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center surgeons traveled to Santa Tecla, El Salvador in November to become a part of three surgical teams that operated for four-and-a-half days, performing 72 free, lifechanging hip and knee replacements to disabled individuals residing in the Central American country. Medical professionals who work in operating rooms with the surgeons on a daily basis complemented the 40-man team that included surgeons, internal medicine doctors, recovery room nurses, physical therapists and trained volunteers. Surgical procedures were provided at no cost to the recipients. Additional medical personnel from Oklahoma Surgical Hospital and Saint Francis Hospital also represented Tulsa on the trip. The surgical team included Dr. Rodney Plaster, Kara Starkman-Plaster, PA-C, and Dr. Sarat Kunapuli of Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center, plus Utah orthopedic surgeon Dr. Aaron Hofmann of Operation Walk Utah. All time, equipment, materials and medications for the project were donated through the Opera-

tion Walk Utah organization. Operation Walk is a nonprofit, volunteer medical services organization dedicated to improving the lives of those suffering from painful and debilitating joint diseases who have no other treatment options. The group of surgeons assembled for this trip are

all “A-Team” rated. “We had specialists from across the United States who are regarded as the best in the field,” said Dr. Plaster. “We are the surgical specialists who frequently get referred for really tough procedures requiring total joint reconstruction on patients who have been handicapped by a

ment to take ownership of what they eat and how they live, and now they are enjoying life to the fullest. “The book is easy to understand and it makes sense,” says Dr. Mark. “And people can easily find a starting point in it. They can see themselves taking that first step and then carrying on.” The couple’s passion for health and wellness can also be seen on “Living It TV,” a 30-minute program broadcast every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. on Cox Cable 3 and 1003 in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. They entertain and inspire as they share their knowledge, as well as their personal struggles and successes. “We are only human,” says Dr. Michele. “We are real people, and we want our viewers to know that even committed people like us can slip up.” They cover topics that affect everyone’s wellness, including weight loss without dieting, alternatives to common drugs, money management, relationships, spiritual growth, stress, fatigue and dealing with setbacks. “We want people to enjoy a life filled with more energy, strength, focus and peace,” adds Dr. Mark. “It’s a life you used to know and enjoy when you were younger.”

What Are You Doing With Your Life? Most New Year’s resolutions fail – but not this time.

By Deanna Rebro Mark Sherwood, ND, and Michele Neil, DO, are certain that patients who commit themselves to getting well and staying well will keep their New Year’s resolution. Why? Because they have seen it time and time again. It works! This husband-and-wife team is on a mission to help people improve every facet of their lives. And they are spreading the message through print, television and one-on one in their clinic, Functional Medical Institute. Dr. Michele says they have far more than a medical practice at FMI. “We have the premier lifestyle change clinic in the area,” she says. She does not believe in pushing pills or processes, or even treating symptoms, as most conventional medicine physicians would do. “We get to the root cause.” They start by carefully listening to each patient’s story and to his or her specific needs and goals. They take into consideration the interactions among genetic, environmental and lifestyle fac-

tors that can influence long-term health and chronic disease. They have what they call a “patient-centered approach,” which addresses the whole person, with physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual aspects. From there, a highly individualized plan takes shape. Dr. Mark recalls one couple who recently came to the clinic. Jim and Carol Ann, both in their 50s, were severely overweight and overmedicated for numerous ailments. They had no energy and lived with aches and pains that they thought were expected with age. Yet, they were tired of this lifestyle and the way they felt every single day. After working with Drs. Mark and Michele for six months, they each lost 35 pounds and were no longer on medications. “When people are ready to change their lives, and understand why they are making these changes and then see the results, we have a lifetime commitment,” says Dr. Mark. The naturopathic doctor works with his wife to blend conventional medical techniques with natural healing and health maintenance.

LIVING THE WELLNESS LIFE WITH DR.S MARK & MICHELE

Handling the New Year Food Pressures – Success with Eats and Triggers for Treats Everyone has different food triggers. For some it is as simple as the thought of a doughnut that drives them to overeat, while others never think to eat. Some triggers may be associated with friends, family, certain places, moods, times of day and other environmental conditions. The holidays somehow wreak havoc on our ability to step away from the sweets. The following are a set of suggestions to help tame your triggers, manage weight issues, and maintain your healthy lifestyle during the holidays. Family triggers: -Oftentimes the holidays present us with the presence of people that trigger our weaknesses. Knowing who these people are can help you when you know they are going to be with you during the season of treats and habitual weakness. Try asking these people specifically if they will help you stay on track before the time comes.

Our unique three-pronged approach is a proven treatment plan with a very high success rate for treating depression when other methods have failed. Dr. McIlroy explained that Strength of Mind has much to offer patients. # 1 We engage the body through therapeutic fitness. # 2 We engage the mind through

-Have the other overeater store sugary foods where you will not be able to find them. -Plan a Mardi Gras splurge day where you go to a nice restaurant and have what you desire, but don’t overeat. -Discuss the idea of managing your meal plans together. You may find that you are an inspiration to others who want to quit.

BMW of  Tulsa

Has your depression diagnosis been treated with therapy and multiple antidepressant medications and FAILED? This kind of resistant depression strikes men and women of all ages. There is hope…

-If you live with another overeater, negotiate with them about where and when you plan to eat. Don’t make demands, instead come to a mutually acceptable agreement so the other overeater can still eat (just not near you or when you are together, unless you have a meal plan).

Mon-Fri 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sat 7:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Work triggers: -Explain to your coworkers why it is important for you to quit.

They usually wish they had not eaten so much as soon as they push themselves away from the table. -If you look at another overeater and feel deprived, remember you are choosing better health. Obesity is toxic and health destroying. Additionally, the expenses of an unhealthy lifestyle will cost a fortune all told. You can be proud that you have taken control of your health, your quality of life, and your future finances. -If you usually take your break with your over eating buddies, take your break with individuals that have better food habits and understand a managed menu. -Take your break at different times, and if possible change the place where you are used to overeating. There is such a thing as “place association.”

-Explore alternative ways to socialize with friends.

-Do a cross word puzzle or read a novel (“The Quest for Wellness” is ideal) during your break, if you have problems sitting without eating. -Run an errand or take a walk on your break instead of staying near the kitchen More people triggers: -For the first few weeks, avoid socializing in places where you know other people will be overeating. -If you have to be around others who overeat and you are tempted to do so, get up and take a break in the middle of your meal so that you can remind yourself to slow down. -Eating is not rush hour. Slow down your chewing rhythm. It takes 20 minutes for your brain to receive the message from the stomach that it is full. -Realize that overeaters are not having more fun just because they are eating.

You Deserve Relief From Depression cognitive therapy. # 3 We stimulate the brain directly with magnetic stimulation, TMS. This is what makes our treatment so unique; we treat the whole person.” Your Strength of Mind team forms a personalized partnership with you in the journey to regain your quality of life.

-Don’t hesitate to ask individuals who offer you sweets and junk not to tempt you. Most overeaters understand what you are going through and will be happy to help you be successful. It may eventually be the key to their success as well.

Their goal is to restore health and help you rediscover a life free from depression. Strength of Mind was the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). TMS therapy is an FDA approved, non-invasive medical treatment for major depression. It gives direct MRI

Don’t Wait ’Til Something Breaks Superior Overhead Door recommends preventive maintenance for your garage door system.

By Duan ne Blan nkeensshiip

When was the last time you thought about servicing your garage door opener mechanism or replacing the springs on your overhead doors? That long ago, huh? “Admittedly,” said Steve Lewis, owner of Superior Overhead Door, “most of us don’t maintain or service our garage doors, rollers, springs and related system parts until something breaks.” “We recommend that you lubricate springs, rollers and hinges at six month intervals with a quality lubricant developed expressly for garage door systems,” said Steve. “Although our LiftMaster® garage door openers already operate very quietly, you’ll probably notice that opening the doors will be quieter and smoother when routinely serviced. The lubricant can improve performance and extend the life on chain-, belt- and screw-driven systems.” Equipment generally seems

to break down during the extreme temperature fluctuations of winter and summer. Now is a great time to have Superior

Overhead do an inspection and provide recommend service. If your garage door springs are more than five or six years old, they should be replaced. Per Steve, that’s their expected life expectancy and it’s certainly better to replace them before rather than after they break. All garage door springs fatigue with use. “When you do need a spring replacement,” said Tammy Lewis, “we offer an option of an extended-life spring that extends spring life from the usual 10,000 cycles (open and close) to 25,000 cycles.” The price difference is not significant and is well worth it for

all the value-added benefits. Superior Overhead Door has a large variety of CloPay® doors designed to complement any home or style. They can be configured in multiple ways with design options, panel designs and hardware. Garage door insulation is also an option. “CloPay has received numerous awards for their energy efficient designs, curb appeal, innovation, best-in-category and best value,” said Steve. “They are the only residential garage door brand backed by the Good Housekeeping Seal.” LiftMaster Garage Door Openers are unsurpassed in

innovation and operation. “They deliver best-in-class performance and are equipped with top-notch, innovative features to simplify our lives while providing peace of mind,” said Steve. “These units are designed to perform and built to last.” The LiftMaster Elite Series provides smooth, trouble-free operation and has built-in battery backup that ensures access to your garage when the power goes out. Customers appreciate how Steve and Tammy’s shop is meticulously clean and orderly and how their overall attitude translates into taking the utmost care and pride in every project they perform. All employees are company employed, not contracted. It’s important to know who’s coming to your home to provide service. Superior Overhead Door does sales, installations, repairs, spring replacements, tune ups and all related services for any garage door brand or model. If you consider yourself a top notch soul food cook, you still have time to enter the CookOff. The 10th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off will take place at the Muskogee Civic Center, January 16, 2016. Chefs will prepare their delicious soul food cuisine for thousands of attendees to enjoy. “The Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off is the perfect venue to celebrate the rich African American heritage of soul food,” says Cassandra Gaines, event creator and City of Muskogee Diversity and Community Liaison. “Soul food is simply comfort food made from scratch – sweet potato pie, smothered chicken and rice, smothered pork chops, homemade macaroni and cheese, greens, hot water corn bread, candied yams, peach cobbler. We bring together a diverse community of people who enjoy the tradition of enjoying good food together and having fun.” One of Cassandra’s responsibilities as marketing director of the Civic Center is to host multicultural community

It’s a fair game for everyone,” Cassandra says. “There is also a people’s choice award so those who attend can vote for their favorite dish.” If you’re not the best cook but love some good soul food, admission to the event is $8, and includes all the delicious food you can handle. “This family-friendly event is guaranteed to produce fond memories and plenty of full stomachs,” says Cassandra. The Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off will be held Saturday, January 16 at the Muskogee Civic Center, located at 425 Boston Street. The afternoon features great food, fun, cash prizes and an educational component regarding the history of soul food and cooking tips from some of the country’s top chefs. In 2010, they became the exclusive distributor of Premium Cabinets and now only deal in cabinetry related products. Premium Cabinets’ office is streamlined and efficient. Owner Gary Gullic and his son, Austin, coordinate inventory, design and sales. Gary Gullic comes to the industry from a sales and marketing background. “I had a group of old colleagues and friends that formed Premium Cabinets Group and wanted me to join them and help them expand to Oklahoma,” he explains. “I have always been very reputation conscious,

and with all the resources to check backgrounds and ratings for contractors or material providers, there seemed to be a huge need for a reputable and dependable cabinetry provider for the Tulsa metro area.” The idea of providing quality cabinets at an affordable price caught on. “We originally had four locations nationally, and now we have more than 30,” Gary adds. He explains he has several different types of customers. Typically, they are individuals who are remodeling or doing a new construction project, house flippers, and contractors in the remodeling and new construction business. Despite the difference in motivations, they all have one thing in common. “Regardless of who our customer is,

continued from page 1 medically supervised weight loss programs have reported impressive weight loss results and formed positive new eating habits. One option in the programs is a regimen of HCG injections. This hormone, naturally produced in the pituitary gland of both genders of all ages, affects fat reserves rather than lean muscle. The injections help fat cells metabolize quickly, so patients see results in pounds and inches almost from the beginning. “We provide patients with a way to jumpstart weight loss while they learn to replace bad eating and lifestyle habits with healthy ones,” says Malissa Spacek, managing partner of BA Med Spa. First-time patients undergo a physical assessment and blood panel with Dr. James Campbell, managing physician. The information obtained from a patient’s medical history and lab results is then analyzed along with their condition, current lifestyle, and personal needs to form a customized plan. The weight loss plans at BA Med Spa combine different tools and medications along with constant support both during a patient’s weight loss journey and after their goals are achieved, to ensure patients keep the pounds off for good. Diabetics, women who have just given birth, people preparing for weight loss surgery or who have already had weight loss surgery, and those with numerous other health considerations can be counted among the many patients who have reached and maintained their weight goals. “There’s a newfound self confidence when people look good on the outside and feel good on the inside,” says Malissa. After reaching their weight loss goals, many patients choose CoolSculpting® to complete their new body transformation. This innovative procedure allows patients to lose any of

their remaining problem areas, such as stubborn bumps and bulges, without surgery or downtime. CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical technology that targets and cools unwanted fat cells in a selected area to induce a noticeable, natural-looking reduction in fat. Unlike most other methods of fat reduction, CoolSculpting involves no needles, no anesthesia, no surgery and no downtime. Patients often spend time reading, working on their laptops or simply relaxing while undergoing this treatment. Developed by Harvard scientists, the procedure uses a targeted cooling process that kills the fat cells underneath the skin, literally freezing them to the point of elimination. Only fat cells are frozen – healthy cells remain healthy. Once crystallized, the fat cells die and are naturally eliminated from your body. CoolSculpting is safe, FDAcleared and effective. Results look natural and can be seen as early as three weeks following treatment, with the most dramatic results seen after one to three months. Treatment areas may include the abdomen, upper abdomen, love handles, bra line, inner thighs and backs of thighs. To schedule your complimentary consultation, call (918) 872-9999.

Sequoyah from people who actually met with him include the following: Sequoyah carried a leather tobacco pouch and knife at his waist; the handle of his knife was rough hewn; he wore center seam moccasins and a calico shirt; he carried a walking stick, wore a turban, and was always smoking his pipe. Sequoyah walked with a limp, but no one knew for sure what had caused it, how long he had had the affliction, or which leg was affected. All of these documented details are included in Nunneley’s sculpture. J. David Nunneley’s beautiful and meaningful art is seen throughout Oklahoma and the Midwest, in other parts of the United States, and in Canada and Mexico. When you’re visiting the Rose District in Downtown Broken Arrow, stop by the J. David Nunneley Studio, located just east of Main on Dallas.

An Oklahoma Treasure Sculptor J. David Nunneley is known for his figurative, wildlife and military sculptures. By Duane Blankenship

Well-known Broken Arrow sculptor J. David Nunneley began his journey into the art world as an art student at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Tulsa. His first job was that of a professional illustrator for a scientific instrument company. Nunneley spent several years illustrating oil and gas field instruments prior to opening his own business. During his career, he started and sold two companies (an instrument controls company and a compressor company) and then served as vice president of R&D, a Tulsa-based instrument company where he was granted five U.S. patents for oil and gas related products. At age 65, after selling his company, Wellhead Compressors Inc., Nunneley retired from business and took advanced studies in figurative sculpture at the Scottsdale Academy of Art. He subsequently dedicated himself to becoming a full-time sculptor. “I know I am a better artist today,” says Nunneley,

“because of my varied life experiences.” In 2001, Nunneley submitted a bronze concept piece, “Pioneer Family,” for the Broken Arrow Arrow Centennial monument. This was his first major sculpture commission.Nunneley has received nearly 30 commissions for monuments since becoming a sculptor. Some of his works include three pieces at West Point Military Academy, works at Tulsa Municipal Airport, an eagle for the Indian Nations Boy Scouts of America, and Colonel Ernest Childers and Major Hank Miesner, Jr., both displayed at Broken Arrow’s Military Park. One of his most popular pieces is the U.S. Army Mule, Hannibal, with a cadet rider, located at the entrance of West Point Military Academy. Commissioned by Gilcrease Museum, his current monument-in-progress is that of Sequoyah, entitled “Greatest of His Race.” Nunneley says there is actually more that is not known about Sequoyah than is known about him.

A Different Alternative to Pain Management A 3,000-year-old technique still delivers pain relief at Balance Point. By Deanna Rebro

MuQi Quintanilla helps clients relieve pain through acupuncture.

For more than 3,000 years, acupuncture has been practiced throughout the world. It is believed to be one of the oldest practices of traditional Chinese medicine. Many people who have exhausted their efforts with traditional Western medicine are now turning to acupuncture as an effective pain relief alternative to drugs, physical therapy and sometimes even surgery. Acupuncture practitioner MuQi (pronounced Mookie) Quintanilla explains that while pharmaceuticals work to block pain, acupuncture stimulates nerves to elicit a healing response. “The human body has an innate capability of healing itself,” he says. “When a body system is out of balance, pain or illness occurs. Energy stimulation through acupuncture restores the balance so the body can heal itself.” Starting in Irving, Texas 18 years ago, MuQi now practices at Balance Point, located at 9242-L S. Sheridan Rd. in Tulsa. Most of his clients seek relief from knee, shoulder, hip, back, chronic or migraine headache pain. He has also

helped clients with infertility issues, high blood pressure, panic attacks and idiopathic or unexplained symptoms. One client shares her story on the Balance Point website: “I have been going to MuQi for acupuncture treatments, nutritional advice and homeopathy for approximately six years. It all started when I lost vision in my right eye, and through acupuncture and homeopathy I was able to give my body the support it needed to heal. Because of my diagnosis of multiple sclerosis five years ago, he has seen me through numb arms and legs, lack of muscle control and fatigue. He has helped me to deal with the symptoms of the disease through his knowledge of getting the body back into balance through acupuncture and strengthening my immune system through nutrition. Since my body is stronger, I have fewer issues from the MS and have been able to have little progression in my symptoms. He has helped me so much that my doctor has encouraged me to continue seeing him because of improvements she sees after the acupuncture.” MuQi recalls a number of people who heard of positive results from acupuncture treatment through family and friends, but expressed a fear of needles. After a thorough

Page 25

consultation, he shows the client the soft and flexible needles that are no thicker than a strand of hair – far from any needle that we know. Each acupuncture needle is used one time and then discarded. “Sometimes the client will ask me when I am going to start, and I will tell them we are finished,” he chuckles. This is not unusual. The 30 to 45 minute procedure is virtually painless. Some clients have been so relaxed, they fell asleep. It is also common for him to hear comments like, “I have been able to sleep a whole lot better since you worked on my shoulder.” That, he explains, is the integrative response from acupuncture as the body systems are once again in balance and working together harmoniously. MuQi says he is very proud that Balance Point is recognized as a partner through the Veterans Administration. This gives him the opportunity to honor and assist Oklahoma veterans.
