Trust Matters These days who you trust matters. When clients come in for a meeting, they know they can trust Melanie, Ken, and Waterstone Private Wealth Management. By Duane Blankenship Melanie Hasty-Grant and Ken Grant own Waterstone Private Wealth Management, with offices in Owasso and at Utica Square in Tulsa. “With 20+ combined years of experience in the financial industry, we’ve been around the block more than once,” says Melanie. “We love what we do and are in the financial business for the long haul.” Clients know Waterstone has the experience and track record for understanding the market. “When clients meet with us, they have trust in us and what we do,” says Melanie.“ Those who place their trust in us know that we do the right things for the right reasons with no mixed loyalties. Our clients know we have a well thought-out plan and that we will be there for them through thick and

thin.” Melanie and Ken enjoy their independence in the industry, but clear through LPL Financial, the largest independent broker/dealer in the country. “Because we are not employees of LPL Financial, we have no downward ‘sales pressure’ to sell clients something they do not need,” said Melanie. They hold no inventory of “stuff” that they have to sell, and they have no proprietary products. This means they have access to all investments available on the market, and they customize plans specifically to clients’ needs. “Clearing” through LPL Financial means that while being independent, Waterstone is also regulated by FINRA, have annual audits, and recordkeeping and statements are produced by LPL Financial. With the New Year inevitably comes the typical fitness frenzy. As Oklahomans attempt to burn off the holiday pounds and shake the year end blues, flocks of folks end up in temporary gym memberships that offer no support or flexibility. Fit For Her in Owasso is a different type of fitness facility, boasting an all inclusive membership including two floors of true 24/7 access, cardio areas, machine and free weight areas, personal training, tanning, sauna, massage chairs, and two children’s play rooms all for one low price. Fit For Her does not suffer under the traditional ebb and flow of New Year’s resolutions. “Fit For Her is a place women want to stay,” says owner Adana

Gittelman. “Class schedules are convenient; we give patrons the ability to create a workout (continued on page 22)

clients have the best of both worlds: having their money managed in a way that is solely in their best interest and having a large company standing behind them and their money. Ken and Melanie are frequent contributors to national television and radio shows such as CNBC’s “PowerLunch,” “Fox Business News,” “MarketWatch Radio” (broadcast from the New York Stock Exchange), and “The Wall Street Journal.” “The recent volatility in the markets have been a wakeup call for most investors that the rules have changed and they need someone they can trust to help guide them towards their financial goals,” said Ken. In today’s crazy market, the old “buy, hold, and hope” strategy is not an effective way to (continued on page 22)

Check for Flood Damage Before You Buy A vehicle’s history report will not always show that it has flood damage. Pruitt’s Auto Collision is happy to check a vehicle for flood damage for free, before you purchase. By Shelly Robinson It’s a new year and many on the East Coast are still rebuilding their lives after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Besides the damage to homes and businesses, vehicles were also affected by the recent storms, and those flooded cars could make their way to Oklahoma. Randy and Liz Pruitt of Pruitt’s Auto Collision in Owasso say consumers shopping for used cars are wise to be cautious. “It is sometimes difficult to tell if a car has flood damage,” says Liz. “In addition to the obvious damage done to upholstery and carpeting, flood water is a corrosive and abrasive mixture of water and dirt that forces its (continued on page 22)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

Beginning With The End In Mind BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

I was blessed this past year with the honor of sitting at the bedside of one of my very first clients while I assisted him and his wife with arranging for hospice. These are long term clients and we have walked quite a long journey together. Many, many years ago this couple came in to see me with the little money they had saved. They told me their hopes and dreams for when they retired. We came up with a plan. Over the years they have developed their wealth the old fashioned way. They worked hard, kept their expenses low, saved a lot, got laid off, changed jobs, rolled over pensions, and 401k’s. Life didn’t always go as planned. We adjusted our plan to accommodate life. A few years ago we worked with an estate planning attorney to develop a trust, a living will, a power of attorney, a health care directive.

They bit the bullet and invested in a joint long-term care policy. Finally, they retired. Within a couple of months of retiring, Chuck was diagnosed with terminal cancer. As I walked down the hall of the hospital to his room, I couldn’t help but think about all of the sacrifices they had made and all the planning we had done. As I entered his room, he recognized me and said “Melanie, this is not what we had planned!” I said “I know. We’ve got to get back on track!” We laughed for a

moment and then cried for a few. “ I want you to promise me that you will help Mary figure out all of the financial stuff and I want you to make sure she takes the next step and holds on to the things we had dreamed” he said, and I promised I would. Sometimes things work out exactly as we planned. Sometimes God has a different plan. In the end, you will want to know, that no matter what, your loved ones can go on and that you have taken care of them. A life well lived…beginning with the end in mind. And tomorrow, I begin again…with Mary. I am so very grateful that I get to do what I do and help people along this journey. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com. SSuffering from Sinuses? Dr. Wanda Harris, “The Herbal Lady,” offers natural remedies to treat frustrating sinus problems.

By Lorrie Ward Many times people think they have a cold or sinus infection, when what they are experiencing is allergy induced sinusitis. In fact, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 13 percent of adults (about 30 million people) have been diagnosed with sinusitis. The U.S. Center for Health Statistics reports that the number one chronic complaint in the United States for the past 20 years has been sinus problems. When you combine the numbers between chronic sinusitis with upper respiratory allergies, the number of people with sinus problems rises to a whopping 60 million – a quarter of the population. Wanda Harris, doctor of naturopathy, The Herbal Lady in Owasso, is always amazed by the number of people who have been prescribed antibiotics for these issues. “Chronic sinus problems stem from inflammation, which only makes them more likely to become infected,” Dr. Wanda points out. “And another large part is due to viral infections, like a cold. Antibiotics only work on bacterial infections.” She also notes that many people take antihistamines to combat allergies and sinusitis,

but these only address the symptoms and are not a cure for problems that Dr. Wanda believes result from a weak immune system. “If you can build up the immune system, you can get rid of inflammation and reduce sinus problems,” says Dr. Wanda, who says that the health of the immune system originates in the colon. “There are many natural ways to combat these problems without the use of antibiotics and antihistamines.” Dr. Wanda first recommends a person address his or her diet to ascertain if certain foods are causing the allergy problems. The most common contributors to food allergies are dairy products and gluten-bearing grains like wheat, rye and barley. She suggests that patients try fasting from these foods for a few days, and if their symptoms clear up, these foods are probably contributing factors. The patient should then replace the foods with organically-grown fruits and vegetables, legumes, and gluten-free grains such as brown rice and corn. The patient can also partake of a modest amount of fermented dairy products like yogurt and kefir,

Sometimes food allergens aren’t the problem. A person may just be suffering from poor digestion, in which foods are not broken down properly in the

digestive tract, causing stagnation which creates congestion in the lymphatic system and translates to the sinuses. To improve digestive health, Dr. Wanda recommends adding proper enzymes to the diet through supplements from Nature’s Sunshine, like Proactazyme, Food Enzymes, or High Potency Protease, all taken with lots of water to help break

up the mucous the digestive tract is producing. She also recommends a good colon cleanse, like Nature’s Sunshine’s CleanStart or Tiao He Cleanse. To keep the digestive tract clean, she recommends fiber supplements like Nature’s Three or Psyllium Hulls Combination and probiotics like Probiotic Eleven or Bifidophius Flora Force. For immediate sinusitis relief while establishing these long-term objectives, Dr. Wanda recommends nasal irrigation with sea salt and warm water in either a bulb syringe or Neti Pot to help flush out trapped mucous and heal the cilia in the sinuses, which are hairs lining the mucous membrane and are designed to help clean the airways. To break up congestion, she recommends traditional herbal remedies from Nature’s Sunshine like Fenugreek and Thyme, ALJ, and if the mucous is yellow or green, Goldenseal and Echinacea and High Potency Garlic. There are all kinds of natural remedies for sinusitis, and Dr. Wanda Harris, The Herbal Lady, wants to help find the right one for you. BBeat the Winter Blues

Replenish the Vitamin D in your body and experience the pleasing affects of tanning at Touch of Sun.

By Lorrie Ward When Old Man Winter drives everyone indoors, most people only get exposed to sunlight when they run to and from their cars on a clear day. Since sunlight is a major source of one of a human’s most necessary nutrients, Vitamin D, and since this vitamin releases moodenhancing endorphins into the body, is it any wonder many of us often experience the wintertime blues? If winter is stealing the spring from your step, you may just need a touch of sun – and where better to look than Touch of Sun in Owasso and Sand Springs? “Quite a few people get the blues during winter because of the gloomy weather,” says Megan Gomez, manager at Touch of Sun. “And when you are not in the sun, you become Vitamin D deficient.” Megan further relates that some physicians even suggest patients with Seasonal Affective Disorder (a mood disorder which is directly related to the weather) try tanning sessions to help boost their moods. But you do not have to have been diagnosed with SAD to experience the blahs that come with cold

weather. “Being in the sun just makes you feel good,” says Megan. “But during the winter you won’t experience this because you’re all bundled up.” This makes winter the perfect time to start visiting Touch of Sun in Owasso or Sand Springs. Owned by Megan’s parents, Stan and Barbie Gomez, Touch of Sun is a multi-level tanning salon, offering a great variety of tanning options to warm you up and boost your mood, with tanning equipment by Royal Sun, including Express, Turbo, Turbo Stand-Up, Ultra High Bronze, and Ultra High UV Scan. “Our Royal Sun tanning equipment will tan you faster and your tan will last longer than any bed you have been in,” says Megan. Sessions are reasonably priced and packages can be purchased by the month. Touch of Sun does not operate by the dreaded contract system; rather, they offer discounts for consecutively purchased months. Single sessions are also available. LLive an Optimal Life

week. If it’s your birthday and really want a piece of cake, don’t beat yourself up about it. What truly matters is living a balanced lifestyle – exercising consistently and maintaining clean, nutritional eating habits most of the time. We only have a short time on earth, and it’s so important to enjoy life and be healthy both

Optimal Fitness 24/7 encourages a balanced, healthy lifestyle. By Sheryl Sowell It’s another new year, and we all know what that means – it seems as though everyone we come across is resolving to lose weight and get fit. Chad Gerstmeyer, owner of Optimal Fitness 24/7, isn’t interested in New Year’s resolutions because unfortunately, they rarely last longer than a month or two. “At Optimal Fitness, we are all about making positive lifestyle choices to live better, longer and healthier for the rest of our lives. That doesn’t mean being a perfect eater and working out every single day; it’s about consistency – eating a clean meal plan the majority of the time and finding exercise you enjoy that you will do on a regular basis.” In 2010, Chad made a huge career change. After 12 years in restaurant management, he opened Optimal Fitness with his wife, Tara. Chad and Tara have both had a lifelong enthusiasm for fitness. Chad was involved with bicycle racing and weight training, and Tara began gymnastics at the age of five and went on to perform at the Olympic level. She also spent seven years coaching gymnastics, ages five through college. Chad and Tara are thrilled to be living

Chad Gerstmeyer, owner of Optimal Fitness 24/7. out their passion every day, helping improve the health and wellbeing of the Owasso community. “We understand that things happen in life – work gets busy, the kids have activities going on, holidays, vacations – which make it impossible to be perfect with

your fitness and eating habits,” says Chad. “Our goal is to educate people on making overall healthy lifestyle changes and focus on consistency. If you’re busy at work this week and can only get in one or two workouts, that’s okay; plan to exercise three or four days next

physically and mentally.” Optimal Fitness makes it easy to get a great workout any time that fits your schedule. The 9,000-square-foot facility is open 24/7, 365 days a year and has a 24-hour surveillance system. With 150 pieces of equipment including Precor cardio and

Pioneer strength training machines, tanning, men’s and women’s locker rooms complete with showers and full-size saunas, and personal training available, Optimal Fitness is truly a healthy haven for guys and gals of all ages. They will soon be adding boot camp style fitness classes as well. Personal training is an excellent way to learn how to get into great shape, or blast through a plateau and take your fitness to the next level. “It’s important to have a trainer that is certified, because you’re placing your wellbeing in their hands and risk injury if they don’t know what they’re doing. We have a wonderful group of personal trainers who are all certified and truly live the lifestyle they advocate,” says Chad. Optimal Fitness also offers a full line of discount supplements. “Supplements are important because they help you achieve your goals quicker, whether it is losing weight or building muscle, and help you recover faster so you’re not as sore for long.” If a healthy, balanced, fit life is what you want, visit Chad and Tara to see how Optimal Fitness can help you achieve your goals. Cotton Cottage in Claremore can help with New Year’s resolutions to finish those sewing projects in your craft room.

By Cassie Woods In August of last year, Jan Bemies decided to turn a longtime hobby into a business when she opened Claremore’s only specialty fabric store, on the corner of Blue Starr Drive and Davis Avenue. The semi-retired child care administrator and her daughter-in-law, Tammy Bemies, had been discussing starting the venture for a while. While driving around Claremore one day after dropping her children off at Claremore Christian School, Tammy found the little white house now referred to as the Cotton Cottage. “We have been very lucky,” said Jan. “The owners of the property were phenomenal during the start-up process. They completed all the upgrades we needed and helped with the remodel of the house. They truly were instrumental in helping get the place open for business.” And since they opened five months ago, they haven’t stopped going. Jan and Tammy are continually looking for ways to offer their customers personalized service. “We make a great team because we work so well together and balance each other out,” said Jan. “I do all the quilting, and Tammy handles the garments

and décor. She has a wonderful eye for color and is very creative.” Stacked floor to ceiling, Cotton Cottage has a very large selection of quality, name-brand fabrics. Some of their most popular brands include Red Rooster, Amy Butler, Free Spirit, Blue Hill, Hoffman and RJR. As the store’s name suggests, all of their fabrics are 100 percent cotton, and they carry a wide range of colors and styles including solids, prints, florals and children’s designs. They also carry some unique character prints such as Route 66 and John Deere. If you are looking for a specific color or design that may not be in stock, the staff at Cotton Cottage can special order based on supplier availability. In addition to great, brandname quilting and dress fabrics, Cotton Cottage also sells laminated cotton that can be used for making waterproof creations like raincoats, bags and lunch bags. They also have a good line of flannels in stock and carry patterns, notions and fat quarters. “If you’re a quilter, you know what fat quarters are and we have a great selection at a good price,” said Jan. “All of our fat quarters are high quality and

all are priced at $1.99.” The Cotton Cottage is also home to a long-arm quilting machine. If a customer creates the quilt and needs to have it sandwiched together, they can have it done in house starting at one cent per inch plus a $10 set up fee. They also do a little bit of specialized embroidery and can create some garments. “We want to get the word out – whether you want to make a nice garment or complete a large-scale quilting project, we can help you,” said Jan. “As we grow, we will continue to add services that cater to the needs of our customers, and we look forward to growing this business and establishing a good customer base by providing quality products and customer service.” Cotton Cottage is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

M Money Boo-Boos and How to Correct Them Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.

By Jocelyn Wood Get a handle on your finances in 2013. Are you wasting money? We’ve compiled a list of money boo-boos that could be costing you your hard-earned money. RCB Bank loan officers Matt Streeter and Michelle Miller offer their advice on how to correct the mistakes. 1. Not making a budget – or attempting to stay near it. Sit down and really look at your monthly expenses, Miller suggests. Where might you be able to cut? Just looking at where your money actually goes is a great tool to saving. “That $1.50 coffee doesn’t seem like a lot at the time until you realize cutting it can save $350 a year,” she says. 2. Not building an emergency fund – Any savings is better than no savings. Matt Streeter says your annual bonus, tax refund or a small amount each month is a great way to start. “You just have to start setting it aside,” he says. Miller adds, “It is easier to save if you have the money automatically deducted from your paycheck or main checking account.” 3. Not paying your credit cards off each month – “It’s like tossing your money out the

window,” Streeter says. “Money spent on interest charges and late fees can add up fast. After interest, how much did that sweater you bought with your credit card really cost?” 4. Living above your means – Carrying a balance on a credit card can become crippling if it gets out of hand. A better solution is to have a special account that you use for “extras,” says Miller. Make a pact with yourself to set aside a small amount every paycheck. “Ideally you save up the cash and you don’t need to use credit; however, no interest financing for large ticket items can be a good alternative. As long as you can pay it off in the free time allotted,” Miller says. 5. Impulse buying – “If you can’t give yourself a day to think about a purchase, that’s an impulse,” says Streeter. “Even worse, if you put that impulse buy on a credit card.” If you find yourself in this situation, back away and go home. 6. Not reviewing your insurance needs annually – or at least every two years. This includes auto, homeowners, life and others. “Your employer and

insurance companies review it each year, so why don’t you?” Streeter asks. Shop around occasionally to see if there’s a better deal. 7. Not having a retirement plan – “Everyone should start saving for retirement as early as possible,” says Miller. If your employer doesn’t have a 401k program, open an IRA. Even $10 a paycheck can add up over the years. 8. Housing expense exceeds 30% of your gross income – If your housing expenses are more than 30% of your gross income, you should consider scaling back, suggests Miller. “Today’s economy is tough, and if you exceed this ratio you are vulnerable to serious financial problems with any disruption of wages or family emergencies.” ADDITIONAL TIPS: Everyone makes bad money decisions from time to time. The key is to recognize them when they happen. Share your goals and concerns with family, or a friend. They may have a solution that worked for them that could also work for you. They can also help hold you

Example: set up an auto transfer to your savings account; bring lunch from home instead of eating out every day; or consider adjusting your cable/internet package. OWASSO / COLLINSVILLE

NNew Year, New Location Strathe Veterinary Hospital is happy to announce their merger with Small Animal Hospital of Owasso. By Sheryl Sowell Strathe Veterinary Hospital is excited to announce a new chapter of growth in their business, which first opened in Owasso 20 years ago. Beginning January 1, 2013, the hospital is merging with SAHO (Small Animal Hospital of Owasso) to

form a dynamic team of professionals dedicated to serving the beloved pets of Owasso and their owners. At the first of January, Dr. Greg Strathe and his entire staff will move their offices down the street to SAHO at

12500 E. 86th St. N., next to El Tequila. Their stay will not last long, however, as the merged veterinary team will soon move to their brand-new, state-of-theart facility currently being built behind Compadres Mexican Grill on 86th Street North. The

new hospital is scheduled to open by fall of 2013. “We are thrilled to be merging with the SAHO team and soon moving to our amazing new hospital. The new facility is approximately 20,000 square feet and will include doggie day care, full grooming services, obedience training and boarding facilities, along with all of our regular veterinary care options,” says Karen Hutchinson, hospital director. “We look forward to learning from each other to form the absolute best veterinary hospital in Owasso, with top-notch care and down-home customer service for every one of our clients – pets and owners.” Karen notes that current clients of Strathe need not worry about a lot of changes happening – everything will remain the same, except for the new building. “Clients can still make an appointment with their preferred doctor, and every employee is making the move with us,” she adds. Along with Dr. Greg Strathe, owners of the merged clinic will be Dr. Bryan Spriggs and Dr. Chris Kelley from SAHO. Rounding out the team of veterinarians will be Dr. Sara

Hendricks and Dr. Kiana Selby from Strathe and Dr. Angie Semple from SAHO. “Each doctor has his or her own specialties and interests, allowing them to provide the best care under one roof,” says Karen. Dr. Strathe explains that merging with SAHO will allow the new veterinary team to keep costs down, resulting in lower prices for clients, and still build a top-of-the-line facility with added amenities. In addition to doggie day care, the new hospital will offer obedience training in a park-like setting as well as boarding services – from standard boarding all the way to luxury suites for the most pampered of pets. “This will allow us to provide a variety of choices and price options for boarding your pet,” says Karen. SAHO/Strathe can take care of your precious pets in any way that they need it, offering vaccinations, heartworm and parasite prevention and treatment, geriatric health care, surgical care, full dental care, weight management, microchipping, grooming and more. They welcome walk-ins, but appointments are preferred.

90 90-Day Weight Loss Challenge BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center will award prizes including a makeover, personal training, and The Liquid Face Lift to the winners of their 2013 challenge. By Lorrie Ward Malissa Spacek of BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center has strong concerns over the grim outlook concerning Oklahoma’s obesity percentage, which was at an alarming rate of 31.4 percent in 2012, up from 30.4 percent just one year prior. The national obesity rate is 35.7 percent. “This is a crucial and dangerous issue, but the great thing is that this is something we can do something about.” To show faith in this last statement, BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is initiating its 2013 90-Day Weight Loss Challenge. Clients who begin the medically supervised program in January, which includes an initial visit and evaluation with lab tests, will be weighed at the beginning and end of 90 days. Winners will be determined by most pounds lost as a percentage of body weight. The three finalists will receive prizes which will include a makeover from Anna Christy’s Aveda Salon, personal training from Buster Brown, gift certificates from Legends

Bicycles and Kay’s Gifts, and The Liquid Face Lift. Weight loss is accomplished by creating new, healthy habits, such as eating more fruits and vegetables, increasing physical activity, and decreasing one’s consumption of sugary drinks and high energy dense, high calorie foods. Weight loss often increases one’s confidence and self esteem, but combating obesity is important for far more than cosmetic reasons. According to the Centers for Disease Control, obesity is related to a whole host of health problems and diseases, including coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, some cancers (including endometrial, breast and colon), high cholesterol, sleep apnea and other respiratory problems, osteoarthritis, reproductive health complications, and some mental health conditions like depression. Therefore it is no surprise that the costs of obesity reported by the CDC are staggering. For example, in 2008, it

is estimated that obesity-related health issues cost U.S. adults an approximate $147 billion, which averaged a cost of around $1,400 per obese person. With these risks and costs taken into consideration, any cost involved with entering a medically supervised weight loss program like the 90-Day Weight Loss Challenge seems minimal. One could consider this to be an investment in a happier, healthier future. As Malissa says, “As soon as people start to lose weight, their bodies start to function properly because the body is going back to where it is supposed to be, and at a healthy weight that body is likely to last longer.”

The only FDA-approved procedure to lift skin on the face and neck. Ultherapy uses the safe, time-tested energy of ultrasound to stimulate the deep structural support layers of the skin—including those typically addressed in a surgical facelift—without disturbing the surface of the skin. Results will unfold over the course of 2-3 months with continued improvement for up to 6 months, including lifting and tightening of the skin on the neck, under the chin, along the jawline, and on the brow. Ultherapy has proven to be an inviting alternative for those who are not yet ready for surgery.

Weight Loss Can Change Your Life W Oklahoma Premier Bariatrics offers weight loss surgeries for morbidly obese patients who suffer associated medical conditions due to their weight. By Sheryl Sowell Kathy Trevino had been overweight her entire life, from childhood throughout her teenage and adult years. When she had children in her late twenties, the pounds really began to pack on and her weight problem got worse and worse. By the time she was in her early forties, she weighed 262 pounds at 5’ 4”. “I had severe chronic pain in my lower back, and my physician told me that if I didn’t do something about my weight, I would be in a wheelchair by the age of 50,” says Kathy. One of Kathy’s coworkers suggested she look into weight loss surgery, and that her insurance might pay for it because it was causing her back pain. Kathy checked with her insurance company and was referred to Dr. Luis Gorospe at Oklahoma Premier Bariatrics. “I had heard about Lap-Band surgery with celebrities like Al Roker, and found out that it is less invasive and has a quicker recovery time than other weight loss surgeries. I went to Dr. Gorospe’s seminar and decided I had to nothing to lose,” says Kathy. In December of 2007, Dr. Gorospe performed Lap-Band

Kathy Trevino before and after Lap-Band surgery. surgery on Kathy, and her life hasn’t been the same since. Kathy has lost around 110 pounds and kept the weight off. “The changes in my life have been dramatic. I no longer have pain in my lower back, I can move around much better, I have so much more energy, and I’m able to see my kneecaps! There’s also the physical part – at 47, I’ve never looked better. It has changed every aspect of my life,

even for my children. I’m no longer the obese mom; I’m a normal mom.” Kathy recommends Dr. Gorospe to anyone considering weight loss surgery. “Dr. Gorospe has an excellent bedside manner, and he will actually spend time with you to go over your questions and concerns. I believe he’s not only a good doctor, but a good person.” If you are morbidly obese

and suffering from medical complications stemming from being overweight, surgery may be the right answer for you. With so many options available, it can be stressful and confusing choosing where to go, who to see, and what surgery is right for you. To help answer these questions, Dr. Gorospe offers free weekly seminars. During the seminars, Dr. Gorospe explains the entire process from beginning to end and assists the small group of attendees in determining if they are qualified for surgery. He offers roux-en-y gastric bypass, adjustable banding (i.e. the Lap-Band surgery that Kathy received), and gastric sleeve surgeries. Gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgeries are generally preferred for patients who need to lose a very large amount of weight (between 80 and 100 pounds, with a body mass index or 40 of higher) and suffer from co-morbid conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. “These surgeries change the person’s hormonal components immediately, and there is almost 100 percent

improvement of their diabetes if they are on one oral medication only. Approximately 80 percent of patients who were on high blood pressure medications no longer need their meds after these surgeries,” explains Dr. Gorospe. “Lap-Band surgery is typically for those who need to lose a smaller amount of weight, who are approximately 50 pounds overweight with a BMI of 30 to 34.” Dr. Gorospe says the best part of his job is seeing the incredible changes that take place in his patients’ lives. “Before the surgery, many of my patients are depressed, hate their relationship with food, and are tired all time. When they lose the weight, their lives are prolonged and their quality of life is greatly improved. Their relationships with loved ones are better, and they’re able to do things they’ve never been able to before. It’s very gratifying to help people live longer, healthier, happier lives.” For more information about Dr. Gorospe’s upcoming seminars, contact Oklahoma Premier Bariatrics at (918) 252-2800.

Trust Matters

manage money, the Grants agree. Yesterday’s accepted school of practice was to buy quality investments and hold them for the long term. “This is still the mainstream school of thought,” said Melanie, “but the market has proven over the last 14 years that the philosophy is no longer effective. You now need much more.” Melanie refers to Waterstone’s overall strategy as “grow, preserve, protect.” “It’s a more tactical, active and protective way of managing money,” she explains. Melanie says that clients now

need a “buy side” and a “sell side” strategy, a well thought-out plan and strategy to determine when and why they are buying an investment, and what they expect to accomplish. It’s not acceptable to just throw money in the market and hope for the best. Waterstone clients want and need strategies to help them meet goals for safety and security. We may call it “service,” but we now need something that goes way beyond that. We need someone who is going to be there for us to face whatever lies ahead. Melanie summarizes it perfectly:

“When you get laid off, when your employer declares bankruptcy, when America goes through a recession and you’re scared, when you’re going through an ugly divorce and don’t know where to turn, when you get older and need help, when your spouse dies and you’re devastated, or when you are terminally ill and in hospice care – it’s during these times you need someone you can call at home, who will come to you wherever you are, who will stand with you in your grief or indecision, and who will be there for your spouse or children when you cannot.

Waterstone will be your advocate, to help you think clearly and get things done. That's why trust truly matters. You are our client, not your money.”

This is a recent and fast growing addition to the facility. “We have some of the best and most competitive prices on weight loss products and sports supplements in the Tulsa metro and Owasso area.” says Adana. Check for Flood Damage Before You Buy way into every seam and crevice of an automobile,” said Chuck Mai, spokesman for AAA Oklahoma. “Most vulnerable are the engine, transmission,

steering and braking systems. Unless completely removed, dirt and other contaminants can cause premature wear of vital components and shorten the life

of the vehicle.” Randy shared the following suggestions: •Give it the sniff test and pay special attention to a moldy or musty smell. •Look at the carpet and upholstery for water-stain marks, rust stains or new or mismatched upholstery. A five-year-old car with brand-new upholstery is a sign that something may have been replaced. •Check for rust on screws in the console area, under floor mats, and look under the dashboard for dried mud or other flood residue. •Have the car inspected by a mechanic, who can put it on a lift and check the undercarriage for water damage or debris from floodwaters. •Look under the hood for mud or grit in the alternator, behind wires and around small openings in starter motors and power steering pumps.

Brides, Plan Your Day in a Weekend

Brides-to-be and their loved ones will not want to miss The Tulsa Wedding Show Weekend, January 5-6, 2013.

By Sheryl Sowell Brides, grooms and their families can save time, gas, energy, confusion and money by attending The Tulsa Wedding Show Weekend, January 5-6, 2013. Making your wedding decisions at the show helps eliminate dreaded phone tag or trying to get an appointment with a wedding vendor. Even email is time-consuming and can delay the immediate response a bride wants and needs. Countless brides have found that attending The Tulsa Wedding Show skips all those wasted steps, as they are able to meet directly with vendors face-to-face on the show floor. This marks the 20th year of The Tulsa Wedding Show, and many new, exciting things are happening during the weekend. The show will be held Saturday, January 5 at the Renaissance Tulsa Hotel & Convention Center, located at 6808 S. 107th E. Ave. Visit the Venues Day will be held citywide on Sunday, January 6. “We are combining all of our experience with knowledge of the latest trends and newest products and services,” says Vicki Taylor, founder of The Tulsa Wedding Show. “The most innovative is the V.I.B. (Very Important Bride) Elite Show

Preview.” A very limited number of tickets are available for this event. A V.I.B. ticket entitles you to exclusive early admission into the show, beginning at 9 a.m., before it opens to the public. This gives brides more personal attention, and crucial first access to the exhibitors. “Some dates are really popular, and V.I.B.s can lock in their wedding date with their chosen vendors while it is still available,”

Vicki adds. Moody’s will have their custom jeweler there to answer any questions, and they are also giving away a double diamond jewelry piece to one lucky bride. Brides of Oklahoma Magazine and Moody’s Jewelry are sponsors of the V.I.B Event, and they are really rolling out the red carpet. Every V.I.B. will receive a luxe tote bag from Brides of Oklahoma with gifts

from selected vendors inside, as well as a jewelry cleaning cloth and cleaner from Moody’s. Additionally, 25 lucky brides holding V.I.B. tickets will receive an 18-inch luxurious pearl strand necklace from Moody’s. General admission brides also have the opportunity to win! Moody’s will give away pairs of pearl earrings to 100 lucky general admission brides. Every single bride who attends the show will receive a tote bag, an issue of Brides of Oklahoma Magazine, and a coupon from Moody’s for $200 off a $500+ groom’s wedding band. The show opens to the public at 11 a.m., with over 100 exhibitors including bakeries, florists, musicians, venues and much more. “The venues range from mansions to lodges to chapels to ranches,” says Vicki. “Our many vendors offer everything you need and some things you didn’t know you needed! For example, one fun idea that many couples are doing is having an ice cream buffet, with a signature ice cream flavor created specifically for the bride and groom.” A special Fashions and Trends Room is where all the bridal shops will have continuous modeling in their

booths. The room will also showcase a tablescape display area, coordinated by Lynn Wheatley of Lasting Impressions, featuring tablescapes designed by all the top planners, decorators and florists in the Tulsa area. Another unique part of the weekend is Visit the Venues Day. It is held the day after the show, Sunday, January 6 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is a free, citywide open house day for wedding venues. Visit the Venues Day gives the group a chance to spend a fun day driving to each of their choice locations and touring them personally. For additional information and to purchase tickets to either the V.I.B. Elite Show Preview or The Tulsa Wedding Show, go to www.thetulsaweddingshow.com. Online V.I.B. admission is $25 or $30 at the door. General admission is $10 online or $12 at the door. Come and “Plan Your Day in a Day” (or two!) during The Tulsa Wedding Show Weekend. Wise Water Solutions BY SHIRLEY HALL

You turn it on and it flows from your tap, easy, convenient, potable water, technologically advanced purified water wholly fit for human consumption – but is it? Despite clean water laws, our tap water continues to be contaminated with a host of pollutants – pollutants known to increase the risk of serious health conditions. Conditions amplified by the addition of chloramines -a combination of chlorine and ammonia, to our drinking water. Sounds more like something you would clean with than drink. Worldwide chlorine has been used to disinfect drinking water. Although it is far safer than the bacteria it destroys, when combined with chloramines and chlorine dioxide a powerful carcinogenic Trihalomethane (THMs) is formed. Linked to liver, kidney and nervous system disorders, THMs are formed when chlorine reacts with naturally occurring materials found in water. If you think drinking bottled water protects you from these harmful contaminants, I am the bearer of bad news. 40% of bottled water is bottled tap water.

Yes, you read correctly. Not only is 40% of bottled water tap water, bottled water may or may not have received additional filtration. An independent study done by the Environmental Working Group found arsenic, THMs and 36 other harmful pollutants hidden in bottled water. In addition, drinking from a plastic bottle is a bad idea. Plastic bottles contain Bisphenol- A or BPA, a synthetic hormone disruptor linked to learning and behavioral problems, altered immune system function, prostate and breast cancers, early puberty in both genders, and a contributor to the health risks surrounding obesity. There is, however, a way to protect yourself, your family, and loved ones.

The most economical and environmentally sound choice you and your family can make is to purchase and install a water filter in your home. Granular Carbon and Carbon Block Filters are the most common types of counter top and under counter water filters. Granular activated carbon is recognized by the EPA as the best available technology for the removal of organic chemicals such as chloramines, herbicides, pesticides and industrial chemicals. For 26 years Environmental Resources has provided water and air filtration services to Tulsa businesses and residences. Sold, installed and maintained, our filters remove a host of contaminants found in drinking water. From the tap over the kitchen and bathroom sinks to showerheads, ice machines, water coolers, refrigerators, whole house systems, whole businesses and more, our time tested water filters deliver pure, great tasting water. Today drinking filtered water is simply a health conscious thing to do. Why not let our filters make a positive change in your life?

LLarger Location for Fitness Time The women’s workout facility has a new, larger location and more amenities, with the same great monthly rate. By Carol Beck-Round With an additional 1,000 square feet, vaulted ceilings, a suspended wood floor in the aerobic room and other amenities, Fitness Time for Ladies is open for business in their new location at the North Park Medical Center located at the corner of Highway 66 North and Lowery Road. The new 5,000-square-foot gym – for women only – includes a much larger aerobic room with a little over 1,000 square feet to accommodate the growing demand for Zumba fitness classes, step and regular aerobics, yoga, and kickboxing. The former facility’s location did not allow room for growth, says Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka, owner. “We had a lot of requests for a larger Zumba room, but we had no capability to grow at our former location.” A larger facility and room to grow were two reasons Dr. Hrdlicka cited for the move. “We also have many clients who live on this side of town in the Sequoyah area. This move provides a facility to meet the needs of the women in this area.” In addition to the increased space for classes, Fitness Time for Ladies now offers four

tanning beds and two showers and includes all-new audio and video surveillance equipment throughout the building. “We also have a children’s room available for mothers and a security system so that they can view their children on the closed circuit televisions while working out,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “We do not, however, offer child care.” What sets Fitness Time for Ladies apart from other gyms in the Claremore area? Besides being for women only, the atmosphere is personal, private, clean and aesthetically pleasing. It is also an all-inclusive gym, which means that there are no extra charges for fitness classes or tanning. “Many gyms charge extra for their classes,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “We do not. When you pay your monthly fee, you have full use of our facility, including tanning. You get the whole gym for the price of a tanning membership.” The all-inclusive membership, if paid monthly, is $49.05. However, if paid in advance, the membership fee is only $40 per month or $480 for a year. Rates have not increased, but the facility has more to offer in the way of space, additional

equipment and tanning beds. High school and college students are now eligible for a discount at $43.99 per month, which includes the full use of amenities. The upscale 24/7 women’s fitness center also offers a full line of aerobic exercise equipment, including treadmills, stationary bicycles, stair steppers and elliptical machines, all outfitted with televisions. In addition to classes and aerobic equipment, Fitness Time for Ladies offers Nautilus strength training equipment as well as free weights to help club members get in tip-top shape. “For the women who get overwhelmed when they walk into a gym full of equipment, a personal trainer is available on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for a new member orientation session on all of the gym equipment,” he adds. “And it’s free.” What else is free? The all-inclusive gym includes use of the sauna and a massage chair. “When you compare Fitness Time to other gyms, you need to compare apples to apples,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “If you add up everything available at our gym, you will find that if you paid for

Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka (pictured) and Leslie Cohen, owners of Fitness Time for Ladies. them separately at others, we come out on top. In addition, we pride ourselves on having a clean gym. We are very particular about staying clean and keeping this place a personal, private atmosphere for our ladies. We want the gym to feel like it is an extension of their home.” Home for the relocated women’s gym is now next door to Mobility Plus and immediately behind Tulsa Teachers Credit Union. The

name and faces are the same; only the location has changed as Fitness Time for Ladies opens its doors to a brighter, larger facility to accommodate area women’s fitness needs.
