By Carol Beck-Round As a new business owner in 1995, Tim Rich was initiated into the spirit of the Owasso community when he was dumped onto a parking lot from the bed of a red Radio Flyer, ending up with a “strawberry on his leg” during the city’s annual Trail Days celebration. Since that initiation, Tim and his wife, Patty, have become an integral part of their community. “From day one, we got involved in Owasso,” says Tim, who is the owner of three McDonald’s restaurants in Owasso. As the 2013 Owasso Trail Days King and Queen, the Riches are being recognized for their commitment to the people, schools and organizations in the area that depend on the support of businesses and individuals like this couple who go above and beyond. “It’s an honor to be recognized,” Tim says.

“We believe in giving back. We’re just trying to be good stewards of what God has given us.” Since purchasing their first McDonald’s, the couple hasn’t changed their business philosophy: “Have the best people, work closely with schools, and be involved in the community.” Education is the focus of their giving. “We believe in supporting our schools and teachers. If we have strong schools, then we have a better community,” said Tim. Through sponsoring McTeacher Nights at their restaurant, they annually donate around $40,000 to Owasso, Collinsville and Oologah schools. The couple, also known for serving hundreds of people during their annual Community Christmas Breakfast, host educator breakfasts and pancake (continued on page 28)

“The market hit all time highs again!” exclaims every media source ever over the last month. “We’ve been here before, remember?” I reply with a middleAmerica voice of reason! All the risk that existed then…still exists now. Sometimes dealing with the emotions that the stock market elicits from folks is the most challenging part of my job. GREED and FEAR run the markets! When I hear people starting to talk crazy about wanting unreasonable returns and about thinking of buying “willynilly” stocks, I know we are in the GREED phase of the market. It is at this phase, I am certain, that we need to be cautious about a downturn. It reminds me of something I heard Warren Buffet say: “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.” What do you think the market will do? It’s at all time highs! Do you think it

will go down from here? That, my friends, is the 50 million dollar question. What I can tell you is that last time we were here, it dropped by 40%. So, what’s a guy supposed to do? Dance the Chicken Dance or ride the Big Sexy Roller Coaster? Well, perhaps a little of both. You must remember that this is not a gigantic game of “Texas Hold ‘Em”! You are not required to be “all in” or “all out.” There is more than one strategy that can be used to win the game. I prefer the “Steady Eddy” wins the race approach to investing. It

may be a bit on the boring side but I’m way over the Big Sexy Roller Coaster and I would prefer to err on the side of caution. SStiletto Sprint for Success Dress for Success Tulsa prepares for its annual Stiletto Sprint and 5K Power Walk/Run on May 11 to help local Tulsa women. By Stephanie Reed While Dress for Success Tulsa has watched many of the 1,167 women suited last year alone cross the employment finish line, it is now time to cheer on volunteers, contributors and participants who make the programs possible. On May 11, Dress for Success Tulsa will host the Third Annual 5K Power Walk/Run and 150-Meter Stiletto Sprint in celebration of the women who have graduated from their employment services program. The event is part of a worldwide initiative, with 35 participating cities across the globe. The two races are part of the Dress for Success initiative to support career development and encourage health and wellness initiatives, while raising awareness and funding for Dress for Success Tulsa. Both events are presented locally by Simmons Homes along with many other corporations and businesses throughout the Tulsa community. The race begins and ends at the Blue Rose Café on Riverside. The Stiletto Sprint, for men and women, promises big laughs for

those willing to compete in the 150-meter dash in a pair of stilettos, with a two-inch heel minimum. After the sprint, families and runners will gear up for the 5K Power Walk/Run. Don’t fancy yourself a runner? Feel free to come for the entertainment as Tulsans make their way across the finish line. After the race, stop in at the Blue Rose Café for food, refreshments and more festivities. “We are proud to host an event with an element that is unique to Tulsa and the run community,” says Executive Director Ronda Adkisson. “This event has something for the entire family, and we are committed to providing our clients, patrons, and supporters a fabulous day of fun and fitness at our beautiful River Parks.” Dress for Success Tulsa offers so much more than the name suggests; truly, the organization goes beyond the suit with two programs, The Going Places Network by Walmart and The Professional Women’s Group (PWG). Dress for Success Tulsa accepts women from over 125 community

partner agencies including but not limited to government agencies, homeless shelters, educational institutions, correctional facilities and domestic violence shelters. The Going Places Network is an eight-week program that strives to prepare unemployed and under-employed women to find and secure gainful employment. Dress for Success Tulsa helps build resumes, develops job skills, hosts mock interviews and of course dresses its participants for the job. At the end of each program, the women are honored in a graduation ceremony with their fellow peers. Once the participants secure employment, they are then eligible for the Professional Women’s Group. This group focuses predominately on job retention. They meet once a month with dinner and childcare provided to offer one another support and listen to keynote speakers, who share their expertise in areas from Career Advancement to Health and Wellness to Work/Life Balance. “Some of these ladies have no idea what size of clothing

Solutions to Stop Texting and Driving Liz and Randy Pruitt offer advice on how to prevent texting while driving, especially among teenagers.

By Shelly Robinson We’ve all experienced it, driving down the highway or pulling up to a four-way stop and plainly seeing other drivers staring at their cell phones instead of paying attention to the road. In reality, most of us have been guilty of doing the same thing, and studies show we are paying the price with damaged lives and property. While distracted driving happens across all age groups, young drivers are especially at risk. With the end of school upon us and the long days of summer just ahead, many teens will be spending more time on the road. While freedom seems sweet to a new license holder, mom and dad are justified in their concerns for safety. The statistics are sobering; the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says the risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among 16- to 19-year-olds than among any other age group. The explosion in cell phone usage is an obvious factor, but having two or more peer passengers more than triples the risk of a fatal crash with a teen at the wheel. Randy and Liz Pruitt of

Liz suggests using an application that allows for 911 calls and the ability to call preapproved numbers (such as the parent’s number) that are programmed into the phone when the application is installed. “I was really surprised at all the options available. You can do anything from block the use of phones while the car is in motion, to sending driving reports to the parent, to setting up a time limit that delays messages during school hours,” said Liz. “There are a lot of applications that would be great for adults to use as well. I’m checking into one that gives an automatic response that I’m

Since opening BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center in 2010, founders Malissa Spacek and Dr. James Campbell have wondered what to do with the bare plot of land they own directly adjacent to the building. Malissa, a master gardener who has a true passion for using her green thumb, came up with the idea to use the plot for a community garden, with crops that would be donated to those in need in the community. BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is proud to announce that their community garden is now in bloom, and the first set of crops is expected to be shared with Broken Arrow residents by the end of May. All fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs will be donated to Arms Around BA (located directly across from BA Med Spa) and to Broken Arrow Neighbors. People in need who get groceries from food banks typically receive non-perishable items, and the community garden will be an excellent resource to supplement their diets with healthy veggies, fruits

and herbs. A total of 48 items have been planted so far, including potatoes, onions, lettuce, strawberries, carrots, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, turnips, tomatoes and cucumbers. “Essentially if it can grow, we are planting it!” says Malissa. Though the garden had been in Malissa’s mind for quite

some time, the idea did not spring into action until she happened to run into Joe Wilkinson, a talented local landscape architect who hosts fundraisers for churches and other organizations to create food-producing community gardens. From that point on, the idea went full speed ahead.

Outdoor Soccer Returns to Tulsa The Tulsa Athletics’ first game will be at the original Driller’s Stadium at 15th and Yale on Saturday, May 18.

By Sheryl Sowell On July 13, 1985, the Tulsa Roughnecks of the North American Soccer League played their final match at the original Driller’s Stadium at 15th and Yale. On May 18, 2013, the Tulsa Athletics will take that same field as outdoor soccer finally makes its return to Tulsa. When the NASL and the Tulsa Roughnecks ceased to be,

several players stayed in the Tulsa area, remaining active in the soccer community which they had helped create. Their bond with the community is still evident today as thousands of athletes have played under their tutelage. Tulsa is revered across the country as a soccer city, with our youth clubs being some of the

most talented and competitive. However, there has been a gap at the top adult level since 1985. This summer, the journey back to the top of the soccer map begins. “When support meets ambition, only success can follow in soccer,” said team co-owner Sonny Dalesandro. Tulsans have an unrivaled passion for the game of soccer,

Co-owner Sonny Dalesandro was the youngest Oklahoman to play professionally when he debuted for Tulsa’s USISL franchise in 1995. Dalesandro won “Rookie of the Year” that season and went on to have a six-year career, playing for the Milwaukee Wave and the Wichita Wings. “Some of my very earliest memories are of Skelly Stadium and the Tulsa Roughnecks, and today’s youth deserve that same impression that I was afforded.” Dr. Tommy Kern, co-owner of the Tulsa Athletics and a sports medicine physician for Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center, grew up playing soccer in Tulsa and went on to play at

Brown University prior to medical school at the University of Oklahoma. “We are excited to bring high-level soccer back to Tulsa to match the quality of the youth programs.” Joey Ryan, head coach of the Tulsa Athletics, has been coaching since the mid-80s after having played professionally in the American Soccer League, the NASL, and indoor in the MISL. Ryan was also an NCAA division 1 champion with the legendary, undefeated Hartwick College team of 1977. Ryan has coached at the youth, high school, semi-pro and professional level in New York, New Jersey and Oklahoma. “My staff and I are extremely excited to be a part of the resurrection of both outdoor soccer in Tulsa and the old Drillers Stadium at Expo Square and look forward to many entertaining, successful games being played there. Richest Noodling Showdown Comes to Claremore The Battle of the Big Cats noodling competition takes place June 13-15, 2013.

By Tanya Andrews Claremore is known for its many Oklahoma legends. Legends like Will Rogers, Patti Page, Lynn Riggs and “Oklahoma!”, Andy Payne, Stuart Roosa, and J.M. Davis all bring fame to Claremore and visitors from around the world. Cowboys, Grammy Award winners, astronauts, and gun collectors, now champion noodler? Kaleb Summers, Claremore native, and team STOadventures, won the 2012 OKIE Noodling Tournament in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. He has worn many hats in his young life, including graduate of Oklahoma State University, boxer, steer wrestler, hunting and fishing guide, and part of the blasting team in his family’s construction business, so adding noodler to his resume comes naturally. Possibly a like-character to Will Rogers, only his tricks are with flathead catfish and not with ropes, Kaleb’s home is the outdoors of northeastern Oklahoma. His noodling experience started in southeast Oklahoma when a friend took him fishing and he soon learned how to decipher between fish holes and beaver holes, while studying the tricks to find the flatheads. Wikipedia defines noodling as fishing for catfish using only

bare hands, practiced primarily in the southern United States. A noodler places his hand inside a discovered catfish hole. Other sources, such as urbandictionary.com, describe it as a crazy person using their fingers as bait to catch a catfish. Kaleb is not “crazy” but is an avid hunter and fisherman whose life has revolved around the preservation of a fading lifestyle that once used to be the norm. “To release a trophy fish reveals a rather strong kind of character, for as sportsmen, we sometimes owe it to our quarry to live to fight another day. After all, the true thrill lies solely in the fight underwater,” says Kaleb. It was a big fight in June of 2012 when Kaleb and his team fought a flathead weighing over 70 pounds (70.46 to be exact) and won the tournament. Their winning fish was the largest on record for the 14-year event. They can then check-in to start scouting and fishing at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 and go until weigh-in on Saturday at 6 p.m. Contestants must be in the weigh-in line at the Claremore Expo Center by 6 p.m. and report to event staff, or be disqualified. Owasso will soon celebrate this shared experience at the 9th annual Owasso Bouquet of Gardeners Spring Festival, to be held Saturday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Tyann Plaza. A huge variety of vendors will offer plants, vegetables, herbs, cacti,

yard art, baskets, orchids, Amish pastries and much more. Attendees to the festival will enjoy a diverse selection of vendors such as Angel Wing Glazine, owned by Kimberly Holcomb, who creates ceramics, pots, yard art, and a variety of garden items. Tina Bush’s Creations by Tina include charming hand-painted cotton overalls, sundresses and garden hats. Tastefully Simple, by

Christy Johnson, offers seasonings, food mixes, desserts and more. Aberdean Farms, owned by Sam and Carina Slavens, will have herbs, veggies, ceramic pots, hanging plants and pecans. Shirley Miller will sell daylilies, and Chaos Cactus, owned by Terri Mann, will offer cacti plants, succulents and pottery. Marsha Butler of Summerside Winery will present wine and meads for purchase. Clem and Donna Haddox of DC's Juntiques will sell their rustic lawn garden items, and Julianne Hayes of the Linnaeus Teaching Garden will hand out materials about the garden. Enjoy music while you shop, including the ukulele group from 3rd through 5th grades and the choir from Northeast Elementary in Owasso, under the direction of Cara Grant. The Spring Festival is hosted by the Owasso Bouquet of Gardeners. CHICKEN PILLOWS Ingredients: 1 (8 oz) can Pillsbury Crescent Rolls 8 oz cream cheese 1/4 cup butter 2-3 cups cooked and shredded chicken 1 egg 1 sleeve saltine crackers crushed 1 can cream of chicken soup 1/4 cup milk 2 spoons full sour cream 1/2 cup shredded cheese Soften butter and block of cream cheese. Then stir to a smooth consistency. Add cooked shredded chicken to the bowl.

QUESO FUNDIDO Ingredients: 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened 1 cup sour cream 2 cans (16 oz) refried beans 1 packet taco seasoning 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded 2 cups monterey jack cheese, shredded Mix cream cheese and sour cream in a large bowl. Mix in refried beans until combined. Stir in taco seasoning. Spray a 9x13 baking pan with cooking spray. Spread mixture evenly into the bottom of the baking dish. Sprinkle the top with both cheeses. RANDY’ S SPICY CRACKERS Ingredients: 2 boxes of whole grain or multigrain crackers, 2 2/3 cups of canola oil 2 tbsp of crushed red pepper 2 tbsp of cayenne pepper 2 packets of ranch dressing mix Put crackers in a plastic cake box with a lid and lay out crackers just like they came in

CHICKEN CORDON BLEU Ingredients: 6 chicken breasts pounded thin 12 slices swiss cheese 6 slices of deli ham (honey or plain) 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs 4 tbsps butter 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp Italian seasoning 6 toothpicks Pound the chicken thin so you can roll it up. I sprinkled each breast with onion powder, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Lay 1 slice of ham and 2 slices of cheese on top. Roll up and secure with a toothpick. Roll in breadcrumbs making sure the whole chicken coated. Slice 4 tbsp butter into several pieces and place in bottom of 9 x 13 baking dish. SHELLY’ S TORTILLA SOUP Ingredients: 2 cans of Bush’s Chili Beans 2 cans white hominy 2 cans Mexicorn or Fiesta Corn 2 cans Delmonte Mexican style stewed tomatoes 2 cans original diced Rotel 1 package Hidden Valley Dressing Mix (original, NOT BUTTERMILK) 1 pound of cooked, diced chicken or cooked, drained hamburger optional Open all cans and put in large crock pot, DO NOT DRAIN THE CANS, the juice makes the soup. Add the DRY dressing mix and meat. Cook on high for 2 hours or low for 4 hours (or all day) or until well heated. Top with grated cheese and serve with tortilla chips.

Stretch the 8 crescents out on a cookie sheet and place a couple spoon fulls of the creamy chicken mixture into the center of the crescent. Fold crescent around the mixture so that none of it is showing. In a separate smaller bowl, beat the egg and 2 tbsp water together. Dip the pillow into the blended egg then into the crushed saltine crackers and place on cookie sheet. Repeat for the remaining 7 crescents. Cook the pillows for 20 minutes at 400 degrees. For the sauce topping: Add cream of chicken and milk into a sauce pan. Add milk to your preferred consistency you want. Drizzle with EVOO and sprinkle with sea salt and pepper. Fold foil over and folds edges in, making a tight sealed blanket around asparagus. Bake directly on oven rack at for 20 min at 375 degrees. GGet Hip to Dr. LaButti Patient Kathy Hill is pain-free after her successful hip replacement. By Joshua Danker-Dake In 2012, Kathy Hill, of Tulsa, had her right hip replaced by Dr. Ronald LaButti. “I’d had my left hip replaced in 2003,” Kathy says. “I dealt with the pain and discomfort in my right hip for about two years, until the symptoms were as bad as they’d been in my other hip. It hurt so badly that I didn’t want to go anywhere or do anything.” By this point, Kathy’s hip was bone-on-bone. “I couldn’t even get my shoe on or get in or out of my car without excruciating pain,” she says. “I was having trouble working every day because of the pain medicine I’d been taking, and I had stomach problems and heartburn all the time.” Her primary care physician recommended she see Dr. LaButti. “He took me seriously and he listened to me, which I really appreciated,” says Kathy. “And he didn’t make me wait for surgery – he scheduled me right away for a total hip replacement.” Dr. LaButti helped Kathy through a recovery that was initially very difficult, she says.

“My recovery was slow and very painful for the first couple of weeks. I was on a walker for six weeks and couldn’t put all my weight on my right foot. I did therapy at home for the first six weeks, I was back at work fulltime after eight weeks, and I did an additional four weeks of therapy once I was back to work. Dr. LaButti told me, step-by-step, what to expect – I did everything he told me to, and everything went just as he said. And his nurse was awesome – I could call and explain whatever was going on, and she would get right back with me.” Kathy says she was impressed with her experience with Dr. LaButti and his office at every stage. “Everyone at his office was very professional and considerate – they knew I was in a lot of pain and needed to be seen as soon as possible, and I never had to wait long at all for my appointments. After the surgery, Dr. LaButti checked on me every morning and addressed all my concerns. And when I got to my room, his office had already sent flowers, which was

really thoughtful.” Kathy recommends Dr. LaButti. “He took care of my pain. I don’t take any pain medicine now, and I don’t walk with any kind of a limp. I can put my shoes on now and get in and out of my car with no problem, and people who don’t know me would never know I’ve had a hip replacement, much less both hips replaced.” Kathy works for the Tulsa County Election Board.
