Trail Days King and Queen

Tim and Patty Rich are dedicated to giving back to their community and schools.

By Susan Erler

By Carol Beck-Round As a new business owner in 1995, Tim Rich was initiated into the spirit of the Owasso community when he was dumped onto a parking lot from the bed of a red Radio Flyer, ending up with a “strawberry on his leg” during the city’s annual Trail Days celebration. Since that initiation, Tim and his wife, Patty, have become an integral part of their community. “From day one, we got involved in Owasso,” says Tim, who is the owner of three McDonald’s restaurants in Owasso. As the 2013 Owasso Trail Days King and Queen, the Riches are being recognized for their commitment to the people, schools and organizations in the area that depend on the support of businesses and individuals like this couple who go above and beyond. “It’s an honor to be recognized,” Tim says.

“We believe in giving back. We’re just trying to be good stewards of what God has given us.” Since purchasing their first McDonald’s, the couple hasn’t changed their business philosophy: “Have the best people, work closely with schools, and be involved in the community.” Education is the focus of their giving. “We believe in supporting our schools and teachers. If we have strong schools, then we have a better community,” said Tim. Through sponsoring McTeacher Nights at their restaurant, they annually donate around $40,000 to Owasso, Collinsville and Oologah schools. The couple, also known for serving hundreds of people during their annual Community Christmas Breakfast, host educator breakfasts and pancake (continued on page 28)

If you are not familiar with Guthrie Green, here’s a great opportunity to get acquainted. Guthrie Green is an urban garden and performance space in the heart of the Brady Arts District in downtown Tulsa. It provides a unique space for Tulsans to congregate, shop and enjoy downtown’s newest urban park. Fowler Toyota of Tulsa has partnered with the Downtown YMCA to offer free fitness classes on Guthrie Green each day, Monday through Saturday,

during the month of May. Classes will be geared towards downtown Tulsa’s professionals and their families, and everyone is welcome to attend. Jonathan Fowler, vice president of operations for Fowler Holding Company/Corporate Headquarters, and Ken Wilkins, general manager of Fowler Toyota of Tulsa, are excited about Fowler’s sponsorship participation of Fitness on the Green. “Fowler has a strong

philosophy of giving back to the communities in which we serve,” Jonathan said, “and we love being involved in the arts, culture, health and fitness.” Ken added, “These are the areas in which we want to maintain the focus of Fowler Toyota of Tulsa as we continue serving our community.” When Fowler and Wilkins first met with project cosponsors, they immediately realized that Fowler had the (continued on page 28)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

NOT YOUR VEGAS STOCK MARKET BOOKIE. BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

“The market hit all time highs again!” exclaims every media source ever over the last month. “We’ve been here before, remember?” I reply with a middleAmerica voice of reason! All the risk that existed then…still exists now. Sometimes dealing with the emotions that the stock market elicits from folks is the most challenging part of my job. GREED and FEAR run the markets! When I hear people starting to talk crazy about wanting unreasonable returns and about thinking of buying “willynilly” stocks, I know we are in the GREED phase of the market. It is at this phase, I am certain, that we need to be cautious about a downturn. It reminds me of something I heard Warren Buffet say: “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.” What do you think the market will do? It’s at all time highs! Do you think it

will go down from here? That, my friends, is the 50 million dollar question. What I can tell you is that last time we were here, it dropped by 40%. So, what’s a guy supposed to do? Dance the Chicken Dance or ride the Big Sexy Roller Coaster? Well, perhaps a little of both. You must remember that this is not a gigantic game of “Texas Hold ‘Em”! You are not required to be “all in” or “all out.” There is more than one strategy that can be used to win the game. I prefer the “Steady Eddy” wins the race approach to investing. It

may be a bit on the boring side but I’m way over the Big Sexy Roller Coaster and I would prefer to err on the side of caution. When our clients hire us to be their financial advisor, they are hiring us to be their risk manager, not their Vegas Stock Market Bookie. Our goal is to manage the risk and make money as we can. Always remember, “If you preserve capital, you will always have another opportunity for growth.” To adopt a Steady Eddy approach you have to have a clear understanding of where you are (what you own), and where you want to go (what you want your investments to do). It requires planning, patience, and perseverance. It demands staying focused on the goal while filtering out all the media noise and the voices in your head. If you could use some help figuring out what to do with your investments, give us a call at 918-272-1120.

SStiletto Sprint for Success Dress for Success Tulsa prepares for its annual Stiletto Sprint and 5K Power Walk/Run on May 11 to help local Tulsa women. By Stephanie Reed While Dress for Success Tulsa has watched many of the 1,167 women suited last year alone cross the employment finish line, it is now time to cheer on volunteers, contributors and participants who make the programs possible. On May 11, Dress for Success Tulsa will host the Third Annual 5K Power Walk/Run and 150-Meter Stiletto Sprint in celebration of the women who have graduated from their employment services program. The event is part of a worldwide initiative, with 35 participating cities across the globe. The two races are part of the Dress for Success initiative to support career development and encourage health and wellness initiatives, while raising awareness and funding for Dress for Success Tulsa. Both events are presented locally by Simmons Homes along with many other corporations and businesses throughout the Tulsa community. The race begins and ends at the Blue Rose Café on Riverside. The Stiletto Sprint, for men and women, promises big laughs for

those willing to compete in the 150-meter dash in a pair of stilettos, with a two-inch heel minimum. After the sprint, families and runners will gear up for the 5K Power Walk/Run. Don’t fancy yourself a runner? Feel free to come for the entertainment as Tulsans make their way across the finish line. After the race, stop in at the Blue Rose Café for food, refreshments and more festivities. “We are proud to host an event with an element that is unique to Tulsa and the run community,” says Executive Director Ronda Adkisson. “This event has something for the entire family, and we are committed to providing our clients, patrons, and supporters a fabulous day of fun and fitness at our beautiful River Parks.” Dress for Success Tulsa offers so much more than the name suggests; truly, the organization goes beyond the suit with two programs, The Going Places Network by Walmart and The Professional Women’s Group (PWG). Dress for Success Tulsa accepts women from over 125 community

partner agencies including but not limited to government agencies, homeless shelters, educational institutions, correctional facilities and domestic violence shelters. The Going Places Network is an eight-week program that strives to prepare unemployed and under-employed women to find and secure gainful employment. Dress for Success Tulsa helps build resumes, develops job skills, hosts mock interviews and of course dresses its participants for the job. At the end of each program, the women are honored in a graduation ceremony with their fellow peers. Once the participants secure employment, they are then eligible for the Professional Women’s Group. This group focuses predominately on job retention. They meet once a month with dinner and childcare provided to offer one another support and listen to keynote speakers, who share their expertise in areas from Career Advancement to Health and Wellness to Work/Life Balance. “Some of these ladies have no idea what size of clothing

Ronda Adkisson, Executive Director for Dress for Success Tulsa, and Pat Simmons, President, log practice time for the annual Stiletto Sprint. they wear, have never worn a pair of high heels or makeup. When they see themselves for the first time, it can be an emotional experience for them and for us. There seems to be a complete transformation in them and in their confidence level. We feel fortunate to have the opportunity and help create their new beginnings,” says Pat Simmons, president. Please join Dress for Success Tulsa in the Third

Solutions to Stop Texting and Driving Liz and Randy Pruitt offer advice on how to prevent texting while driving, especially among teenagers.

By Shelly Robinson We’ve all experienced it, driving down the highway or pulling up to a four-way stop and plainly seeing other drivers staring at their cell phones instead of paying attention to the road. In reality, most of us have been guilty of doing the same thing, and studies show we are paying the price with damaged lives and property. While distracted driving happens across all age groups, young drivers are especially at risk. With the end of school upon us and the long days of summer just ahead, many teens will be spending more time on the road. While freedom seems sweet to a new license holder, mom and dad are justified in their concerns for safety. The statistics are sobering; the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says the risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among 16- to 19-year-olds than among any other age group. The explosion in cell phone usage is an obvious factor, but having two or more peer passengers more than triples the risk of a fatal crash with a teen at the wheel. Randy and Liz Pruitt of

Randy and Liz Pruitt of Pruitt’s Auto Collision.

Pruitt’s Auto Collision are in a unique position to see the direct results of distracted driving. “Obviously, repairing damaged vehicles is our business,” says Randy. “However, we would much rather be working on a car damaged in a weather event or a true ‘accident’ rather than something that could be prevented.” Liz shared that while she has seen many warnings not to text and drive, she hasn’t seen much advice on how to go about it. “Throwing the problem out there is one thing, but offering solutions is so important, and I wanted to share some good advice I discovered.” By simply typing in an Internet search for “apps to stop teen texting and driving,” a parent can access multiple sites offering applications and computer services that can be installed on your teen’s smart phone to prevent dangerous texting and driving. Liz suggests using an application that allows for 911 calls and the ability to call preapproved numbers (such as the parent’s number) that are programmed into the phone when the application is installed. “I was really surprised at all the options available. You can do anything from block the use of phones while the car is in motion, to sending driving reports to the parent, to setting up a time limit that delays messages during school hours,” said Liz. “There are a lot of applications that would be great for adults to use as well. I’m checking into one that gives an automatic response that I’m

Page 7

driving and will respond later.” Of course, if you do have a need for collision repair, it’s important to have your vehicle repaired by an experienced and professional shop. Pruitt’s can put your mind at ease with one phone call and makes it very convenient for you. From having your vehicle towed in, working with you and your insurance company, and having a Hertz Rent-A-Car location onsite, Pruitt’s was designed with the customer in mind. Randy is ASE and I-CAR trained, and is certified on the Chief frame machine and PPG paint systems. The Pruitt’s painter, John Nash, adds over 40 years of experience, and Jason Linzy has over 15 years experience. Michael Minton is a graduate of Owasso and Tulsa Technology Center and started in the shop before he was even out of high school. Free estimates and front door service welcome you at Pruitt’s. TTime for Spring Cleaning Lucas Premier Cleaning provides residential and commercial cleaning “the old-fashioned way.” By Duane Blankenship Owner Maggie Reyes started her business, Lucas Premier Cleaning, four years ago. “I’ve always been good at cleaning homes and businesses,” says Maggie, “and it’s something I really enjoy doing.” Maggie moved to Tulsa six years ago and after a couple of stints in the corporate world decided that she wanted to do something she knew would make her happy – starting her own cleaning company. Business is better now than ever, especially since Lucas Premier Cleaning partnered with AAA (Automobile Association of America) in Tulsa. Customers already utilizing the services of Lucas Premier Cleaning suggested that AAA partner up with Maggie and offer cleaning services as a “member deal.” You, AAA member or not, can benefit from Maggie’s experience in both residential and commercial cleaning. Lucas Premier Cleaning has several two-person crews that are trained to clean “the old-fashioned way,” according to Maggie. Their basic principle is based on cleaning your house or business as though it were their own. “Even when I

walk into my own home,” said Maggie, “I want to feel like I’m a guest. So the services and quality of work we provide really start with me and my employees.” Maggie says she listens to customers to find out exactly what they expect in order to truly enjoy and appreciate their homes. “We want each customer to feel comfortable and confident that they can go out and do whatever they want to do while their home is being thoroughly cleaned,” said Maggie. “We are licensed, bonded and insured, and all employees wear the Lucas Premier Cleaning uniform when on the job.” Lucas Premier Cleaning offers much more than a new level of cleaning. True, their attention to detail and quality has made them a number one choice throughout the Tulsa metro area, but they have also customized other programs to meet the needs of customers. “Our hard-working crew members arrive on time, are extremely courteous, and respect your privacy. We are always clean and well-spoken, and our work is 100 percent satisfaction

guaranteed,” added Maggie. The company offers daily, weekly, bi-weekly and monthly services. Some of their services include spring cleaning, garage cleaning and organization, closet

cleaning, deep cleaning, and move-in or move-out cleaning. They also specialize in sanitation, window cleaning and carpet restoration. They clean offices, warehouses, banks, churches,

apartments and schools, and provide new construction cleanup. Services also include landscape creation and maintenance, debris removal, and year-round maintenance such as weed control and fertilization, lawn care and mowing, tree and shrub care, and more. “We also like to celebrate with you,” says Maggie, “with one of our special packages that include birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, weddings, thank you and get well packages.” The packages offer everything from cleaning the house to flowers to making arrangements for dinner out at the restaurant of your choosing. Lucas Premier Cleaning is far more than just a cleaning company. You may call them for an over-the-phone estimate or a representative will come to your home or business to meet with you to discuss your specific requirements and expectations. Estimates are free. Our Family Taking Care of Yours Family Animal Medicine focuses on treating your pets like their own family members.

By Susan Erler Nothing is more important than the health of your family members, and that includes your four-legged family members too. When your furry friends need to see a doctor, you want one that understands how much your pet means to you. At Family Animal Medicine the staff understands, and they make sure that your family member is treated like one of their own. Located at 9200 N. Garnett in Owasso, this veterinary hospital is one of a kind. Dr. Jenny Nobles and Dr. Gena Guerriero have almost two decades of combined experience caring for animals. As pet owners themselves, they understand firsthand how these creatures wiggle their way into your heart. “We know that people have a variety of places to choose from when it comes to taking care of your pets,” states Dr. Nobles. “What sets us apart from the rest is that we provide a family atmosphere. We focus on creating an entire team effort between the doctors, the staff, the pets and their owners.” This synergy is possible in large part because the staff here

(L to R): Dr. Gena Guerriero, Wanda and Dr. Jenny Nobles of Family Animal Medicine. has actually been working together for years. Everyone from the receptionist to the vet techs, doctors, and even the

groomer have all worked side by side for almost a decade. “Being together this long has allowed us to get to know each other well,”

says Dr. Guerriero. “We take the time to really get to know our clients and their pets better.” This kind of personal attention is what brings clients back. One of the most recognized staff members, Wanda, has been serving the Owasso community since 1990. She recently was nominated for “Vet Tech of the Year,” a highly prestigious title since the candidates are nominated by their customers. Wanda was in the top five out of over 1,200 others in the running – no surprise for those who have come to know her. “She is certainly the matriarch of the clinic,” says Dr. Guerriero. “She is so well known and well loved by all who know her. She has a genuine love for all the animals who visit, and you can tell that they feel the same about her.” Family Animal Medicine is celebrating their one-year anniversary in their new location, yet some clients have not realized that they have moved. “We still hear daily from clients who didn’t know where we were,” says Dr. Nobles. “We hope that they will appreciate and enjoy our new facility. We offer extra-large examination rooms, which helps with the anxiety pets feel in a strange environment. We have one goal in mind: to take care of the animals, get to know them by name and create a soothing environment they will feel comfortable in. This attention to the details really sets us apart from everyone else.” Family Animal Medicine is

OOld-Fashioned Customer Service Thompson’s General Store has remained successful for 23 years by offering a variety of goods and services as well as good old-fashioned customer care. By Susan Erler Located off the main roads in Owasso is an unassuming small building that many drive by every day, never realizing that inside those walls lies an impressive collection of items encompassing every category of need. Everything from crystal wine bottle toppers to salt licks for rabbits to home décor to fertilizer for your lawn, Thompson’s General Store remains one of the last of its kind. It is the truest definition of a general store, carrying a broad selection of merchandise in a small space while being a place where locals come to purchase many of their daily goods. Thompson’s General Store is a family-owned business that opened its doors in April of 1990 and now 23 years later, still remains an integral part of the local community. Owner Stevie Thompson enjoys greeting each and every customer who walks through her doors. Some are old friends and loyal customers who have been a part of her business since the day it opened; others are walking in for the first time, amazed at what they find inside. But all can find goods, services

and products to make life a little better. Stevie offers customers more than just products. She has set herself apart by doing something that seems so simple, but also seems so elusive: she treats her customers as she would like to be treated. “I have had so many people visit my store who are amazed when I come out from behind the counter and actually talk to them,” she laughs. “They almost gasp when I ask if I can help them find anything, or if I can answer a question for them. I find it so gratifying when I know someone has walked out my door knowing that I value their business, and with answers to their questions.” Such a simple concept, yet one that is such a rare find. Just another reason that Thompson’s General Store is in a league of its own – a genuine interest in customer needs. Stevie always takes time to talk to customers, getting them to open up about the underlying problem they are trying to solve. She asks plenty of questions so she can give one-on-one advice, and often helps customers find the best

Stevie Thompson, owner of Thompson’s General Store. solution to their specific situation. “In so many cases, a customer will ask me a nonspecific question, so I try to delve deeper into their actual need. Sometimes a question about their pet’s appetite really has a deeper issue. I have a wealth of knowledge from my years in this business, which helps me guide them to the right resolution.”

Stevie is excited to invite everyone in Owasso and the surrounding areas to an upcoming informational seminar. The class is being held Saturday, May 4 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and will cover many important topics such as plant growth, how to enhance your soil, and how to do so using environmentally friendly products. PProtect Your Identity RCI Insurance Group will host a free Community Paper Shredding Event on Saturday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to noon. By Sheryl Sowell RCI Insurance Group in Claremore will host a free Community Paper Shredding Event on Saturday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to noon. Now more than ever, it is important to protect your identity by making sure all paperwork with any sensitive personal information is destroyed. “Approximately 9 million Americans have their identity stolen each year, and tax season is always the worst,” says Donna Vierheller of RCI

Insurance. To help protect your identity, bring your junk mail, paper clutter and old tax records to the RCI Insurance parking lot, across the street from the Claremore Post Office, at 621 N. Cherokee in Claremore. Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personally identifying information, such as your name, Social Security number, or credit card number, without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes.

Mick Cottom, president of RCI Insurance Group

Get your junk mail and personal documents shredded at RCI’s Community Paper Shredding Event.

“Identity theft is a serious problem. It takes an average of 175 hours and a cost of $1,100 to correct a case of identity theft,” says Donna. Consumers victimized by identity theft may also lose out on job opportunities or be denied bank loans because of negative information on their credit reports. It is even possible to be arrested for crimes committed by someone who stole your

identity. The amount of stress and damages caused can be significant. Identity theft cases tend to peak during tax-filing season. Out of every 130 people who file taxes, two typically suffer from identity fraud that gets discovered when they attempt to file their returns and find that someone already has. In fact, the IRS placed identity theft at the top of its “dirty dozen” list of

tax scams this year and has 3,000 employees working on such cases. Shred your documents! Stop by RCI Insurance on May 4 from 9 a.m. to noon for their free Community Paper Shredding Event. Green Country Shredding & Recycling will be on hand to shred your old tax documents, junk mail and paper clutter for free. RCI Insurance, which has been in business since 1972 and owned by Mick Cottom since 1994, is dedicated to serving customers with a smile and providing all of your auto, home, business and personal insurance needs. SSomething Bugging You? Bug Force sells products that are tested and proven to keep bed bugs (and others) from biting. By Duane Blankenship Bug Force owner Darryl Grimm sells Greenway Formula 7 products at a Tulsa business location and online. The Greenway Formula 7 product line was developed by a native Oklahoman and is a formulated all-natural spray that is safe for the environment, with no harmful chemicals added. “Formula 7 was originally developed and tested to be 100 percent effective in killing bed bug eggs, larvae and small bed bugs within 24 hours and teen and adult bed bugs within 48 hours,” said Grimm. “The product was tested by the OSU Entomology Department.” Personal experiences have shown Formula 7 to be effective on other insects as well. Five basic products are available for both commercial and consumer use. They are sold at Tail Waggers Pet Supplies in the Fontana Shopping Center at 51st and Memorial in Tulsa. You will find additional information and may also make purchases online at www.bugforce.biz. “New customers often ask if Formula 7 is FDA and EPA approved,” said Grimm. “Each

product was lab tested and proven to be all-natural. They contain no chemicals or pesticides and are exempt from FDA and EPA registration. The agencies said there was no need for testing because they contain nothing harmful to the environment and are EPA Title 25b Exempt Registered by Oklahoma Department of Agriculture.” The original product was Greenway Formula 7 Bed Bug Solution. It’s an all-natural bed bug spray that has been proven to be 100 percent effective in killing bed bugs. Multiple container sizes, including a 3.3-ounce size that is easy to carry along whenever you travel, are available. Formula 7 Tick and Flea Spray ensures peace of mind when you spray a pet because it has no harmful chemicals and it kills fleas and ticks. “The application process is very easy and doesn’t require much product,” says Grimm. “It is very cost effective – only about $2 a month to treat your dog or cat – compared to products containing harmful chemicals. Once

applied, the product lasts about 14 days unless your pet is bathed or groomed.” The Household Formula 7 Spray is an ideal solution for homeowners, property owners and management personnel for common pest control. It has a 30-day residual effect that kills and repels insects. It has been field tested by customers and has been effective in killing spiders, ants, crickets, wasps and scorpions. These are not claims by Daryl Grimm, Bug Force, or the manufacturer. It is information noted and received from customers as they have used Greenway Formula 7 products. Greenway Formula 7 Rancher has proven effective in keeping flies and other insects off horses, cows and goats. It, too, is cost effective when compared to competitive products. Last in the lineup is a personal product, Formula 7 Bug Repellent. “I think it’s good advice to avoid the possible side effects of repellents containing diethyltoluamide (DEET),” said Grimm. “They are chemical pesticides.” He recommends that you “go green” with the Formula

This product is great for campers, hikers, bikers, gardeners, hunters and fishermen. “You can also use it on children because it contains no harmful pesticides and is chemical free.” It keeps biting flies, gnats, mosquitoes, ticks, and many other insects away when you’re outdoors. NNeed a Yard Makeover? Call Andrew Martin of Lawns By Nature for all your landscape design and installation needs. By Sheryl Sowell Lawns By Nature owner Andrew Martin is excited to be celebrating his company’s 16th anniversary this year. Andrew and his team have provided excellent lawn and landscape management services to area residents since 1997. Many have become repeat customers, and even close friends. Lawns By Nature is your one-stop shop for taking care of everything you need done outside, and even some things inside. “Whether your home is worth $50,000 or $4 million, we take pride in giving all our customers the best service possible,” explains Andrew. “We are complete and thorough with all our jobs. Our work is truly our best form of advertising.” The company specializes in landscape design and management, and provides many other services as well including “weed pull 'n.” Customers always deal directly with the owner. “I speak with every client personally. We also have a great loyal crew that really knows what they’re doing.” The business philosophy of loyalty applies to customers as well. “We work hard to build a trust with our clients.

Communication with them is our top priority,” says Andrew. “We don’t lose accounts. We make sure that once you’ve worked with us, you are 100 percent satisfied and want to continue using our services.” Now is a great time to beautify your outside space with flower installation and landscape design. “We offer multiple types of flowers, and we deal directly

with the growers,” says Andrew. If storms cause damage to your trees, Lawns By Nature offers advantages over tree companies. “Because we’re a full landscape company that offers tree services, we are able to offer landscape maintenance with our proposal regarding tree work. Don’t forget we can also install new trees.” This time of year is filled

with celebrations. If you’re planning a graduation party, baby or bridal shower, or any other big event at your home, Lawns By Nature can do a complete cleanup of your yard. Call as soon as possible to schedule your event. Andrew has been doing landscaping since he was 12 years old. His company’s goal is to continuously raise the bar on

service in the landscape industry. “We want our work to always exceed our customers’ expectations,” says Andrew. “We don’t believe in competition – we believe in outdoing our personal best every time.” Lawns By Nature’s landscaping services include design, installation, maintenance, soil cultivation, mulching, “weed pull 'n” and the addition of seasonal flowers, flower pots and arrangements. They offer commercial mowing services, leaf removal, debris hauling, and tree trimming, pruning and removal. They also do retaining walls, boulderscape, hardscape, concrete sidewalks, porches and driveways, French drains, and sprinkler repair. Lawns By Nature services both commercial and residential properties, and they work by the job, by the visit, or with a yearly contract. “We work with homeowner and property owner associations, large and small apartments, and we love to work with churches,” adds Andrew. Maybe you’re unsure about hiring a landscape company because you think you can’t afford it. “Give us a call. Don’t assume that because our services are so diversified that we’re not competitively priced. We’re eager to earn your business,” says Andrew. For more information, contact

plants will not yield crops for years, so this is a long-term commitment for us. We’re excited to be able to help feed disadvantaged Broken Arrow residents with fresh fruits and vegetables for many years to come.” Arms Around BA is an organization that seeks to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of Broken Arrow residents in need. They do so through donations of medical care, personal care items, utility bill assistance, food and more. Learn more at www.armsaroundba.org. Broken Arrow Neighbors provides basic needs emergency assistance to more than 11,000 financially disadvantaged people in Broken Arrow. They nourish the body with food and the spirit with respect and dignity. Visit www.baneighbors.com for more information. BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is committed to improving the lives of others. BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center will donate crops from its new community garden to Arms Around BA and Broken Arrow Neighbors, two non-profit organizations that help disadvantaged residents.

By Sheryl Sowell

Since opening BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center in 2010, founders Malissa Spacek and Dr. James Campbell have wondered what to do with the bare plot of land they own directly adjacent to the building. Malissa, a master gardener who has a true passion for using her green thumb, came up with the idea to use the plot for a community garden, with crops that would be donated to those in need in the community. BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is proud to announce that their community garden is now in bloom, and the first set of crops is expected to be shared with Broken Arrow residents by the end of May. All fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs will be donated to Arms Around BA (located directly across from BA Med Spa) and to Broken Arrow Neighbors. People in need who get groceries from food banks typically receive non-perishable items, and the community garden will be an excellent resource to supplement their diets with healthy veggies, fruits

and herbs. A total of 48 items have been planted so far, including potatoes, onions, lettuce, strawberries, carrots, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, turnips, tomatoes and cucumbers. “Essentially if it can grow, we are planting it!” says Malissa. Though the garden had been in Malissa’s mind for quite

some time, the idea did not spring into action until she happened to run into Joe Wilkinson, a talented local landscape architect who hosts fundraisers for churches and other organizations to create food-producing community gardens. From that point on, the idea went full speed ahead.

Malissa’s son, Samm Spacek, is the community garden’s project manager, and volunteers include Britt Radford, Kirby Jarolim, Marwin Kemp, Melody Spacek, James Cole and Meg Sutherland. “This garden is truly a labor of love,” said Meg, who is also the marketing director of BA Med Spa. “Some of the

Ultherapy uses ultrasound to lift, tone and tighten the skin. It is FDA approved for the face, neck and brow. Ultherapy targets the deep foundation below the skin-typically addressed in cosmetic surgery - without cutting or disrupting the skin’s surface. Ultherapy stimulates the body’s own natural collagen building process. With just one treatment, Ultherapy initiates the lifting process which builds gradually over two to three months and continues to improve over time. Ultherapy is a compelling option for people with mild to moderate skin laxity as well as those wanting to “stay ahead of the game” or those looking to prolong the effects of cosmetic surgery. By Sheryl Sowell Muhammad Ali once said, “Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men…Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” Chad and Tara Gerstmeyer, owners of Optimal Fitness in Owasso, believe in these words wholeheartedly and hope to motivate others to feel the same way. “The biggest excuse for not exercising and living a healthy lifestyle is always, ‘I don’t have the time.’ But the fact is, people will figure out a way to find time for the things they want out of life,” says Chad. “Our goal is to inspire people to change their lives and hop on the lifelong road of health and happiness. Yesterday you said ‘tomorrow.’ Don’t put your wellbeing on hold any longer. You have the power to change your life in incredible ways if you simply make the decision and do it.” Many people will begin an exercise regime, fall off the wagon for a while and end up giving up entirely, thinking they can’t do it. According to Chad, living a healthy lifestyle is not

Outdoor Soccer Returns to Tulsa The Tulsa Athletics’ first game will be at the original Driller’s Stadium at 15th and Yale on Saturday, May 18.

By Sheryl Sowell On July 13, 1985, the Tulsa Roughnecks of the North American Soccer League played their final match at the original Driller’s Stadium at 15th and Yale. On May 18, 2013, the Tulsa Athletics will take that same field as outdoor soccer finally makes its return to Tulsa. When the NASL and the Tulsa Roughnecks ceased to be,

several players stayed in the Tulsa area, remaining active in the soccer community which they had helped create. Their bond with the community is still evident today as thousands of athletes have played under their tutelage. Tulsa is revered across the country as a soccer city, with our youth clubs being some of the

most talented and competitive. However, there has been a gap at the top adult level since 1985. This summer, the journey back to the top of the soccer map begins. “When support meets ambition, only success can follow in soccer,” said team co-owner Sonny Dalesandro. Tulsans have an unrivaled passion for the game of soccer,

Coach Joey Ryan, Dr. Tommy Kern, Sonny Dalesandro and Jake Dobkins of the Tulsa Athletics organization.

www.ValueNews.com so much so that several attempts have been made to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to our city. This is the Tulsa Athletics’ goal as well, one step at a time. Rekindling the love that Tulsa has for the game at its highest level is the first priority. Four of the newer, yet most successful clubs in MLS are teams that played in lower divisions, and because of incredible fan support made the jump to the MLS. This is the Tulsa Athletics’ ultimate goal. This summer will be Tulsa Athletics’ inaugural season in the National Premiere Soccer League, the largest league in the United States, with 61 teams competing across the country. It is the perfect league for a new ambitious franchise to start its journey towards returning Tulsa to the forefront of the soccer map in America. Co-owner Sonny Dalesandro was the youngest Oklahoman to play professionally when he debuted for Tulsa’s USISL franchise in 1995. Dalesandro won “Rookie of the Year” that season and went on to have a six-year career, playing for the Milwaukee Wave and the Wichita Wings. “Some of my very earliest memories are of Skelly Stadium and the Tulsa Roughnecks, and today’s youth deserve that same impression that I was afforded.” Dr. Tommy Kern, co-owner of the Tulsa Athletics and a sports medicine physician for Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center, grew up playing soccer in Tulsa and went on to play at

Brown University prior to medical school at the University of Oklahoma. “We are excited to bring high-level soccer back to Tulsa to match the quality of the youth programs.” Joey Ryan, head coach of the Tulsa Athletics, has been coaching since the mid-80s after having played professionally in the American Soccer League, the NASL, and indoor in the MISL. Ryan was also an NCAA division 1 champion with the legendary, undefeated Hartwick College team of 1977. Ryan has coached at the youth, high school, semi-pro and professional level in New York, New Jersey and Oklahoma. “My staff and I are extremely excited to be a part of the resurrection of both outdoor soccer in Tulsa and the old Drillers Stadium at Expo Square and look forward to many entertaining, successful games being played there. The owners have done a fantastic job of putting this project together, and we hope to work as hard and represent Tulsa on the field as well as they have in putting this franchise together.” Bring the whole family out for the Tulsa Athletics’ first game on Saturday, May 18. Tickets are available at www.tulsa-athletics.com; reserved seating is $10 and general admission is $5. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter at Ttownsoccer. For more information, contact

PPrepare Thyself for Merriment The Castle of Muskogee’s annual Oklahoma Renaissance Festival runs May 4 through June 2. By Sheryl Sowell Travel to 1539 Castleton for the Castle of Muskogee’s Oklahoma Renaissance Festival. King Henry VIII and his sister, Queen Margaret of Scotland, are on progress through the fair land, and this year, they are joined by King Francis of France and King James of Scotland. There is sure to be mirth, merriment, and mischief throughout the Village. More than 600 costumed merchants, artisans, and performers populate Castleton, transporting visitors to the 16th century. Music, comedy, swordplay, and magic can be found on 15 stages throughout the grounds. They welcome several new performers to the stages this year, including Bawdily Harm (comedic swordplay), Black Oak Shillelagh (Celtic music), and Ed “Cheeks” Miller (sea shanties and more). Returning favorites include The Musical Blades, The Jolly Rogers, Karma Dogma, Ez N Dil, The Jester Rejects, Raks al Hassana Bellydance, the Laundry Lasses, and many more. Sir Thomas and Sir Richard of The Heroic Knights of Old joust twice each day in the Tournament Arena, The Royal Gauntlet Birds of Prey showcases the grandeur of hawks and

falcons, and Cast in Bronze fills the arena with the awesome sound of the Carillon bells. The Royal Luncheon is served each day by the arena, where you can dine with His Majesty while watching the tournament below. Inside the Castle Keep you can witness presentations to the Royal Court or attend the Queen’s Tea. Enjoy the 37,000square-foot Castle with its dungeon, Torture Chamber, catacombs, and so much more. While most of the festival is strictly family entertainment,

adults can sneak away to attend the King’s Smoker (21 and over) each afternoon for some bawdy humor. Children and families will delight in the newly expanded Woodlands area. Visit Excalibur Keepe to sign good behavior contracts; learn to make marbles, paper, and chain mail; play games; hunt for pirate treasure; and explore the Enchanted Faery Forest. Dance around the Maypole or visit the Black House or the Garrison to learn all about life in Renaissance England.

Sir Thomas and Sir Richard joust in the Tournament Arena.

Over 600 costumed performers, artisans and merchants populate Castleton during the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival. Don’t forget to indulge in some of the wonderful food all over the site – smoked turkey legs or homemade barbecue, roasted ears of corn, Mediterranean delights, fresh baked bread and pastries, ice cream, and more. And, you can find refreshing drinks (from water to cappuccino to ale) at any one of the eight pubs in the Village. You are welcome to come in plain clothes, a costume of your own, or rent a costume for the day from the shop just inside the Main Entrance. You can even exchange money at the Bank for Castleton coin, accepted throughout the Village. Plan now for delightful May days at the Renaissance Festival! The festival will be open each Saturday and Sunday beginning May 4 through June 2, plus Student Day on Friday, May 10 and Memorial Day on Monday, May 27.

Get your tickets online at www.okcastle.com and like them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/thecastleofmuskogee for all of the updates. If you plan to attend the festival more than one weekend, consider joining Friends of the Festival for amazing year-round benefits, including a season pass, four extra complimentary tickets, a personalized medallion, discounts on the evening events, and discounts at participating merchants. CCrawfish Invade Tulsa Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 18 to attend CrawFest 2013 at Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats.

By Sheryl Sowell On Saturday, May 18, you are invited to experience a bit of Cajun cuisine right here in Tulsa. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats, on 71st Street just west of Lewis, will host CrawFest 2013 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Come and enjoy all your

favorite Cajun foods like crawfish etouffee, crawfish boudin, boiled crawfish and boiled shrimp. They’ll have your favorites on the grill as well, including beef and pork sausage, pork boudin, and hot dogs for the little ones. Don’t forget other

Cajun favorites including red beans, Cajun sausage sandwiches, corn maque choux, homemade pralines and bread pudding. The festival will feature live Cajun music from The Jambalya Jazz Band as well as Gravy, a jazz band that hails from New

Orleans. Children will love the fun crawfish races, craw-fishing, and New Orleans Mardi Gras bead art. A portion of the proceeds from CrawFest will benefit the son of one of Hebert’s employees. Nathan Johns is a young husband and father who had the misfortune of getting West Nile Fever in June of 2012. Nathan remains hospitalized and is facing months of respiratory and physical rehabilitation. Proceeds from CrawFest will also go to Planted Ministries, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the poorest children and families in Nicaragua through their education program. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats, offering delectable fresh-cut meats and poultry, is open Monday through Saturday, with lunch and dinner served each day. Owner Ed “Cajun Ed” Richard explains what makes their authentic Cajun food so special: many of the ingredients and seasonings come from Louisiana, and the meat is fresh – the best of the best. “The timely combination of cooking and seasonings creates the authentic Cajun flavor,

Richest Noodling Showdown Comes to Claremore The Battle of the Big Cats noodling competition takes place June 13-15, 2013.

By Tanya Andrews Claremore is known for its many Oklahoma legends. Legends like Will Rogers, Patti Page, Lynn Riggs and “Oklahoma!”, Andy Payne, Stuart Roosa, and J.M. Davis all bring fame to Claremore and visitors from around the world. Cowboys, Grammy Award winners, astronauts, and gun collectors, now champion noodler? Kaleb Summers, Claremore native, and team STOadventures, won the 2012 OKIE Noodling Tournament in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. He has worn many hats in his young life, including graduate of Oklahoma State University, boxer, steer wrestler, hunting and fishing guide, and part of the blasting team in his family’s construction business, so adding noodler to his resume comes naturally. Possibly a like-character to Will Rogers, only his tricks are with flathead catfish and not with ropes, Kaleb’s home is the outdoors of northeastern Oklahoma. His noodling experience started in southeast Oklahoma when a friend took him fishing and he soon learned how to decipher between fish holes and beaver holes, while studying the tricks to find the flatheads. Wikipedia defines noodling as fishing for catfish using only

bare hands, practiced primarily in the southern United States. A noodler places his hand inside a discovered catfish hole. Other sources, such as urbandictionary.com, describe it as a crazy person using their fingers as bait to catch a catfish. Kaleb is not “crazy” but is an avid hunter and fisherman whose life has revolved around the preservation of a fading lifestyle that once used to be the norm. “To release a trophy fish reveals a rather strong kind of character, for as sportsmen, we sometimes owe it to our quarry to live to fight another day. After all, the true thrill lies solely in the fight underwater,” says Kaleb. It was a big fight in June of 2012 when Kaleb and his team fought a flathead weighing over 70 pounds (70.46 to be exact) and won the tournament. Their winning fish was the largest on record for the 14-year event. Kaleb and STOadventures, along with Visit Claremore, Claremore Expo Center, NABATAK OUTDOORS, K95 and Fox 23, Summers Drilling & Blasting, Value News, Osage Casino, GRDA, Melton’s Sales, Pixley Lumber Company, Warren Cat, Reasors, Wild Country Meats, and BancFirst will host the

“Battle of the Big Cats…Route 66’s Richest Noodling Showdown” coming June 13-15. A total of $10,000 in cash in prizes will be awarded, with $5,000 going to the contestant/team with the “BIG” fish. Contestants must be entered by Wednesday, June 12 at noon. They can then check-in to start scouting and fishing at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 and go until weigh-in on Saturday at 6 p.m. Contestants must be in the weigh-in line at the Claremore Expo Center by 6 p.m. and report to event staff, or be disqualified. Entry fees are $50 per person and are available online at www.stoadventures.net, www.visitclaremore.org, or in person at NABATAK OUTDOORS or the Claremore Expo Center. Contestants can fish any lake, such as Grand Lake or Hudson, or any river they wish to. Winners will be announced at 6:30 p.m. and entertainment will continue afterward for the crowds to enjoy. The public is invited to come out to the Expo on Friday and enjoy a fish fry, live entertainment, and a variety of vendors at the Claremore Expo Center. The tradeshow will open at noon and

Champion Noodler Kaleb Summers. the fish fry and entertainment will start around 6 p.m. Throughout Friday and Saturday, Kaleb will show his skills in several noodling exhibitions in a 3,000gallon tank. Spectators and fans will enjoy entertainment provided by A Bar Bunkhouse Band and other performers to be named. Music, tradeshow, exhibitions, and being present for the contestants’ check-ins is all free to the public! “Visit Claremore is elated to work with Kaleb and the various partners to bring this great event to our hometown,” says Tanya Andrews, executive director. “Claremore is proud to have one of our own want to share their experience and bring a competition here. Kaleb sees that

an event of this nature will bring visitors, competitors, and residents from Oklahoma and the region, and he is excited about showcasing his hometown. He is a great ambassador of Claremore and of Oklahoma!” A full event schedule, information, contestant entry forms, and tradeshow vendor registrations are available for the Battle of the Big Cats at www.stoadventures.net or www.visitclaremore.org, or by calling (918) 341-8688.

Trail Days King and Queen suppers, 5K runs, and health and job fairs. According to Owasso Chamber President Gary Akin, “Undoubtedly, the spirit of this couple became known throughout America when they decided, two years ago, to literally tear down and rebuild their restaurant on 76th Street North. This 90-day project could have meant unemployment for 70 of their workers. However, they said ‘no – we’ll keep all of our employees on the payroll and serve our community at the same time.’” Instead of leaving their employees jobless during the rebuilding, the couple sent them into the community to volunteer while still receiving their regular paychecks. Employees volunteered with

organizations in Owasso including the Community Center, the Resource Center, Baptist Retirement Center and the Pregnancy Resource Center. “It’s important that you teach by example,” says Patty. “Some of our employees may never have the opportunity or realize what volunteering could add to their lives.” The Riches are certainly adding to the lives of others through their generosity. On Saturday, May 11, as part of the annual Owasso Trail Days, they will be giving away 500 youth-size bicycle helmets in the lot next to their 76th Street store beginning at 3:30 p.m. Individuals from 360 Sports and the Owasso Fire Department will be on hand to help fit the kids with their helmets. Ronald McDonald will make an

appearance at 4 p.m. to promote good health and exercise through his “Let’s Get Moving” presentation. “He’s always a good draw for the kids,” adds Tim. Last August, the couple gave away 500 free backpacks. “They were gone in less than 30 minutes,” he says. “We also invited the kids to donate canned goods.” Area businesses and community and Owasso city employees brought their vehicles, including a fire truck, garbage truck, street sweeper and school bus. ONG and PSO, as well as businesses like Warren CAT, John Deere and Ditch Witch, brought their trucks. “Pre-school children were excited about touching the school bus while the city garbage truck was also a big hit,” says Tim, “and we collected 2,500 canned food items to

donate.” Owasso Trail Days will kick off on May 9 and end on May 12. A host of family-friendly activities are planned, including the Owasso Trail Days Expo, a Pet Fest, bicycle races, a parade and carnival as well as others. For more information about the week’s activities, go to www.owassotraildays.com.

Find that Special Something Owner Laura Sanders prides herself on locating a wide variety of items everyone would be thrilled to receive, while keeping her customers’ budgets in mind too. “I have amazing gifts for Mother’s Day, graduation, baby showers and weddings, all priced under $25,” she says. “Most have multiple people on their gift lists, so by shopping Surceé they can find one-of-a-kind items all reasonably priced.” Surceé has some terrific options for graduations, including monogrammed bath wraps, luggage, storage bins to help organize tiny dorm rooms, and keepsake items engraved and personalized for the new graduate. Brighton is offering an exceptional deal just in time for Mother’s Day. Called “Ears to You,” this amazing offer can certainly help everyone stretch their gift-giving dollars. Simply purchase any Brighton necklace and bracelet from April 26-May

12 and you will receive free your choice of Brighton earrings. That’s a deal that’s hard to beat. Recently the A&M Flower Stand opened its new location in front of Surceé in the parking lot of Tyann Plaza. For those who have become loyal customers of A&M, you might remember their old location in front of Reasor’s on 86th Street North. But this year they have moved north and Laura is thrilled. “We are very excited to have them as part of our location.” Laura is also excited about several fun activities going on at her store during the month of May. The first is May 4, when her annual Sidewalk Sale will coincide with the Owasso Bouquet of Gardeners Spring Festival. The festival features a huge variety of garden accessories, trees, plants, musical entertainment and more. Fiesta Night is set for May 6, and it is no accident that this celebration falls on the same night as the grand opening of Los

She attributes her loyal customer base to her friendly and knowledgeable staff, most who have been with her for years. Susan Hanchette is a long-time member of the Surceé family. “I get the opportunity to help our customers with so many major events in their lives,” says Susan. “We have the perfect items to decorate their new home or for them to give at a baby shower – amazing items that they can be proud to pass on to someone. I

love that I get to help people find the perfect item for all their major life events.” Surceé has an impressive collection of bracelets and necklaces that can all be monogrammed and personalized, and a huge collection of custom charms. “We have expanded our store to include many items that you might not expect to find at a gift shop,” explains Laura. “We have beautiful wedding gifts, decorating and cook books, outdoor entertaining items, home décor, furniture and an extensive line of bubble bath, lotions, candles and perfumes.” One baby gift item that Laura cannot seem to keep in stock are called “Chew Beads.” These are stylish silicone “teething” jewelry designed for the new mom to look stylish while allowing her baby to do what comes naturally, chew on mom’s jewelry. “These make fun and functional baby gifts, and they have been incredibly difficult to keep on the shelves!”

Fitness on the Green desire and resources to sponsor Fitness on the Green for the entire month of May. You may not choose to attend each daily class, but you certainly have that option to broaden your exercise experience. A variety of fitness and health-geared events will be conducted by professional area fitness instructors, and each class will be held for one hour. Although the Monday through Friday classes are mostly for adults, there will be a class called “Mommy & Me” each Saturday of the month for moms and their children. This class will be held

QQuality Health Care that Costs Less Dr. Paul Pisarik of Owasso Family Medicine focuses on individualized patient care – not insurance companies – and averages only two patients per hour. By Susan Erler When was the last time you left a doctor’s visit and felt like you mattered? Did the doctor rush in, ask one or two questions, give you a diagnosis and fly out the door before you even had a chance to ask for clarification? In today’s fast-paced, high-cost, high-stress world of health care providers, patient care often takes the back seat to insurance companies and high overhead from fancy, expensive office locations – and the patient frequently gets lost in the shuffle. But, you do have a choice. There is one doctor who understands that patients want someone who will listen to them, answer their questions, and simply make them feel important. Dr. Paul Pisarik of Owasso Family Medicine is dedicated to being that kind of physician. His practice is designed to offer patients a different type of experience. Averaging only two patients per hour, Dr. Pisarik has designed his office around five values that he holds close to his heart. “The most important goal

for me is to be punctual,” explains Dr. Pisarik. “My patients know that I value their time and seeing them at their set appointment time is vital to my core beliefs. My second goal is to always be accessible to my patients. With me, I have stripped away the traditional layers of aggravations you are used to dealing with, so when you call, I am the person at the other end of the phone.” His last three goals include providing each patient with the most up-to-date technology and medical knowledge, giving a thorough examination and ensuring that each visit is unrushed, and offering the patient enough time to ask questions and feel as though they have been heard. This business structure is certainly unorthodox, but Dr. Pisarik is quick to point out the many advantages. “I am able to spend more time with my patients because I have a minimal overhead. I do this by not accepting any form of

insurance,” he explains. Now, before you immediately decide that this would never work for you if you have insurance, Dr. Pisarik explains that his policy doesn’t mean that you have to bear the cost of all of your visits. It simply means that you pay upfront, send in the insurance claim form yourself, and then get reimbursed directly by your insurance provider. “In exchange for doing a little paperwork themselves, my patients are paid back by receiving comprehensive medical care from a physician with 28 years of experience, much shorter office time waits, quickly returned phone calls from me – not a nurse or other staff member, and costs of common services and tests much lower than in traditional doctor’s office settings,” states Dr. Pisarik. “Some may think this is completely unheard of, but I feel as though it is important to get back to the business of being a physician.” Dr. Pisarik also offers

several different payment plans, each designed to help his patients handle the costs of unexpected doctor visits. For a complete explanation of these options, simply go to his website, www.owassofamilymd.com. Services offered include: annual exams, well woman exams, well child exams, sports and school physicals, DOT physicals, sick visits including colds and allergies, chronic disease management, chronic pain management, Suboxone (narcotic addiction) management, X-rays, skin procedures such as biopsies, cuts, moles, cyst removal and lacerations, and yes, he even does house calls! Finally, you have a choice.

Rev Up Your Savings It’s lake time! Consider refinancing your boat (or automobile, motorcycle or RV) with RCB Bank.

By Jocelyn Wood Refinancing your vehicle loan (for a land or water cruiser) could save you money. With summer loan promotions like RCB Bank’s 1.91% APR* on new, used and refinanced vehicles, now is a good time to review your current loan, or consider buying that new vessel you’ve been eyeing. Refinancing is not right for everyone, but it’s wise to know your options. RCB Bank Loan

Officers Barbara Renfrow and Roger Evans answer some frequently asked questions about auto refinances. What is an auto refinance? An auto refinance (or boat, RV or even an ATV) is when a customer is provided new financing for their loan in order to lower the loan interest rate or monthly payment. How does a refinance help me?

Let’s say you bought a car and borrowed $20,000 at 2.99% APR for five years. Your monthly payments are $359.30. If you financed that same loan with RCB Bank at its 1.91% APR*, your monthly payments would be $349.78, saving you $571.20 over the life of the loan. When should I consider refinancing? Are you interested in

RCB Bank Loan Officer Roger Evans (right) helps Jamie Moore reel in the savings on his new summer cruiser.

www.ValueNews.com lowering your monthly payments or shortening the term of your loan? Maybe you want to consolidate debt at a lower rate of interest? These are all reasons to consider refinancing. The best advice is to visit face to face with a lender. See what they offer and compare that to what you have and what you are trying to achieve. You can stop by any RCB Bank branch to talk to a lender at no obligation. How is a bank loan different from a dealership or independent lender? Most dealers sell their car loans to big out-of-state lenders. Not all, but most. Also, note that dealers will typically charge additional fees. At RCB Bank, our rates and fees are very competitive and, for used cars, are often lower. We also maintain your loan locally and provide personal customer service to you and your family for the duration of your loan, not just when you sign loan papers. I just bought a vehicle from the dealership at a higher interest rate. How soon can I refinance? If you have the valid title for your vehicle, you can apply for a refinance at any time. If you just bought a vehicle, you may have to wait until the perfected title comes back before you can apply. What documents will I need to get started with the loan application? You will need a signed loan application and a copy of your current paystubs, a valid driver’s license, your insurance verification and the title of the vehicle. Additional documents

may be requested. Ready to start saving? RCB Bank is currently offering great rates on new or used vehicles, and refinances. We’re offering 1.91% APR* for 2006-2013 vehicles, boats or RVs and 2.609% APR for 2004-2005 models. Loans can be used to buy a new or used vehicle, refinance an existing loan from another lender, pay off credit cards or fund a home improvement project as long as the loan is tied to a titled vehicle. Download our loan application at www.RCBbank.com. You can also stop by any RCB Bank branch to talk to a lender or call 855-BANK-RCB. Barbara and Roger welcome you to stop by the Claremore RCB Bank Financial Center, located at the corner of Will Rogers and Lynn Riggs, to speak to them in person. *Annual Percentage Rate (APR) as of 4/15/2013, and includes a 3% discount for automatic debit of monthly payment from an RCB Bank checking or savings account. Rate could increase if automatic debit is cancelled at any time during the term of the loan. APR is based on a term of 60 months and $50.00 document preparation fee. Requires credit score of 650 or above. Limited offer with approved credit for loans secured by titled vehicles. Financing available for 100% purchase price (new) or 105% NADA trade-in (used) 2013 – 2006 models. Refinance of current RCB Bank obligation may not qualify. Other restrictions may apply. Member FDIC. Equal Housing Lender. For more information, contact

GGet Hip to Dr. LaButti Patient Kathy Hill is pain-free after her successful hip replacement. By Joshua Danker-Dake In 2012, Kathy Hill, of Tulsa, had her right hip replaced by Dr. Ronald LaButti. “I’d had my left hip replaced in 2003,” Kathy says. “I dealt with the pain and discomfort in my right hip for about two years, until the symptoms were as bad as they’d been in my other hip. It hurt so badly that I didn’t want to go anywhere or do anything.” By this point, Kathy’s hip was bone-on-bone. “I couldn’t even get my shoe on or get in or out of my car without excruciating pain,” she says. “I was having trouble working every day because of the pain medicine I’d been taking, and I had stomach problems and heartburn all the time.” Her primary care physician recommended she see Dr. LaButti. “He took me seriously and he listened to me, which I really appreciated,” says Kathy. “And he didn’t make me wait for surgery – he scheduled me right away for a total hip replacement.” Dr. LaButti helped Kathy through a recovery that was initially very difficult, she says.

“My recovery was slow and very painful for the first couple of weeks. I was on a walker for six weeks and couldn’t put all my weight on my right foot. I did therapy at home for the first six weeks, I was back at work fulltime after eight weeks, and I did an additional four weeks of therapy once I was back to work. Dr. LaButti told me, step-by-step, what to expect – I did everything he told me to, and everything went just as he said. And his nurse was awesome – I could call and explain whatever was going on, and she would get right back with me.” Kathy says she was impressed with her experience with Dr. LaButti and his office at every stage. “Everyone at his office was very professional and considerate – they knew I was in a lot of pain and needed to be seen as soon as possible, and I never had to wait long at all for my appointments. After the surgery, Dr. LaButti checked on me every morning and addressed all my concerns. And when I got to my room, his office had already sent flowers, which was

really thoughtful.” Kathy recommends Dr. LaButti. “He took care of my pain. I don’t take any pain medicine now, and I don’t walk with any kind of a limp. I can put my shoes on now and get in and out of my car with no problem, and people who don’t know me would never know I’ve had a hip replacement, much less both hips replaced.” Kathy works for the Tulsa County Election Board. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, working in the yard, and enjoying nature and the woods.
