Prescription drug abuse and misuse is a growing problem in Rogers County and the state of Oklahoma.

By Susan Erler

By Cassie Woods Those looking for drugs no longer have to meet shady dealers in dark street corners. They are getting them right out of the medicine cabinets of their friends and family members. “Eight out of 10 calls that the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control receive are about abuse of prescription drugs,” said Trisha DeLozier, certified prevention specialist for the Healthy Community Partnership. In 2012, the CDC named Oklahoma as number one in the nation per capita for prescription drug abuse for all ages. In 2011, Oklahoma had 807 fatal and 2,748 non-fatal overdoses. Becoming more dangerous than street drugs, pharmaceutical (continued on page 28)

THE RETIREMENT CRISIS Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

After a lifetime of hard work, people feel they should be able to live out their golden years with financial independence. Unfortunately for many, failing to plan means planning to fail. When folks come in to visit with us for the first time, we have them bring a lot of financial information with them. I am looking for what their expenses are, what their debt is, how much they have saved in non-retirement accounts, as well as IRA’s and 401k’s. I want to know about company pensions, their goals for retirement, and expectations about when that will be. My job and my passion is to help them set realistic goals and get on track. What I am finding is that expectations have risen over the years. Instead of having goals of doing a little traveling, playing with the grandkids, and winning a mean game of dominoes, folks are expecting to maintain their same standard of living and spend as much money as they did during their working years. That is a great goal! However, the planning for that goal should start decades before it needs to come to pass. Folks that start planning too late are likely to face the harsh reality of that dream not coming true. The biggest retirement mistakes I see are: Starting too late and planning too little. The proverbial too little too late definitely applies to the absolute biggest mistake I see in planning for retirement -

The effects of the loss of this benefit will be stunning. You must save and plan for your own retirement. 3 The age for collecting full Social Security benefits is increasing. For folks born in 1960 and later, the age for receiving full Social Security benefits is increasing from 65 to 67. 4 Congress cited improvements in the health of older people and increasing life expectancy as the primary reason for increasing the normal retirement age. The Social Security statements that I have begun to see in my office recently incorporates the addition of the age 70 benefit estimate for delayed retirement credits. Every time I see it, I think . . this is the writing on the wall.

dwindling saving patterns. More and more, I see folks that have little or nothing put back for retirement. In addition to the turbulent economy, saving for retirement has been further upset by other concerns such as job uncertainty, making ends meet, and making payments for mortgages, debts, health insurance and medical expenses. That being said, I also see an awful lot of just “spending as much as there is until the next paycheck”. 1According to a study done by the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) the retirement income deficit (ie: the difference between what people have saved for retirement and what they should have at this point) is $6.6 trillion. Good Grief!

Folks, listen. You must save for your own retirement. I cannot state this enough. At the end of the day, you are responsible for how you will live in your retirement years. We are here for you. If you need help trying to plan for your retirement, give us a call. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com. Pensions are going away. For many working folks, they saw their parents retire on social security and a pension. 2 Today only one in five people in the workforce has a defined benefit pension.

By Sheryl Sowell Spring is in the air, and now is the perfect time to change up your appearance with a fresh new look. Merle Norman Cosmetics & Bella Capelli Salon in Claremore is hosting a Locks of Love and anniversary celebration on Saturday, April 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The salon will offer free haircuts to those with hair 10 inches or longer to donate to Locks of Love. Anyone who does not have 10 inches to cut will receive a haircut for only $10. Locks of Love is a not-forprofit organization that provides the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children with medical hair loss. Most recipients have lost their hair due to an auto-immune condition known as alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. Others have suffered severe burns, radiation treatment, or any number of dermatological conditions resulting in long-term or

permanent hair loss. In addition to supporting this wonderful organization, the event will celebrate 14 years of Sue Hicks owning the Claremore Merle Norman Cosmetics & Bella Capelli Salon. Sue was a teacher for 30 years before purchasing the business in April of 1999. “We are very excited to be celebrating our anniversary and supporting a worthy cause with this fun event for the whole family,” says Sue. “We will have refreshments, face painting for the kids, and several drawings for great door prizes such as Merle Norman products and certificates for salon services. Everyone who attends will have a chance to win.” According to Sue, many people have the misconception that Merle Norman is a product line geared only to the older set – not true, she says. “Merle Norman offers cutting-edge colors and all the latest trends in makeup for all ages, as well as a full line of skin care. We offer

free Express Makeovers every day and encourage you to touch, feel and try before you buy. Along with your fabulous new look, you’ll learn how to apply the makeup. Every makeover also receives a free hydrating facial.” Merle Norman skin care lines are customizable and include options for rosacea, aging skin, acne and sensitive skin. An in-store boutique also offers jewelry, luxury handbags, scarves and OPI nail polish. The Bella Capelli Salon inside Merle Norman provides cuts, color and highlights, perms, special event hairdos, Keratin smoothing treatments, waxing, and full-service nail treatments including manicures, pedicures, Shellac, acrylic and solar nails. They welcome women, men and children clients. The salon is spacious and clean, with three talented stylists. Salon hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to

Singing for the Community Since 1986 Claremore Community Chorus will celebrate spring with a free concert on Tuesday, April 30 at Claremore First United Methodist Church.

By Carol Beck-Round With a mixture of music – from old casual songs to more modern ones – the Claremore Community Chorus invites the public to attend their free concert set for Tuesday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Claremore First United Methodist Church, located at 1615 N. Hwy. 88. A reception will follow. “Spring’s Musical Bouquet”

is the theme for their 29th concert. “Most people will remember and know the songs that we will perform,” says Donna Nickols, chorus member. “We are a group of people who like to sing and perform above and beyond our daily jobs and church choirs,” says Nickols. “We are currently in rehearsal for our spring concert and

welcome anyone who would like to sing to please come join us. Anyone from the area is welcome to join. We have members from as far away as Locust Grove.” Claremore Community Chorus provides an opportunity for vocalists to share their talent with the community. “Being able to share your talent provides a

We currently need some new voices, especially men.” Reading music is not a requirement, she adds. “You also don’t have to try out. You just need to love to sing.” The chorus performs a broad spectrum of musical selections when they perform their annual winter and spring concerts. In addition, the chorus participates in other community events, including caroling for Dickens on the Boulevard, the Claremore Christmas parade and Will Rogers Days. During preparation for their two annual concerts, chorus members practice weekly on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 1304 N. Dorothy in Claremore. Claremore Community Chorus, organized in 1986, has enjoyed a rich and interesting history. The community’s financial support has been essential to its success, says Nickols. Rogers State University Music Department Professor Dr. Don Trot founded the chorus. Under his and Buddy Watson’s direction, the chorus was invited to join other choirs around the nation to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The chorus has also joined efforts with other area choirs to present Handel’s “Messiah” with the Tulsa Philharmonic Orchestra. After its establishment, several talented directors, including Larry Mitchell and Buddy Watson, have directed the chorus. Currently, the chorus is

under the direction of Vicki McCuistain, who has been a member and soloist for many years prior to becoming director. Claremore Community Chorus is governed by a board of directors elected by its members. “The current new leadership is excited about the potential for new chorus members as well as seeking out additional opportunities for us to participate in community events,” Nickols says. “Over the years, the Claremore Community Chorus has performed concerts at different facilities, including St. Cecilia Catholic Church, First United Methodist Church, Church of the Nazarene, First Christian Church, Redeemer Lutheran Church and New Life Baptist Church. By welcoming Claremore Community Chorus in this way, these places help the choir remain a viable part of the Claremore community, as it participates in community-oriented events year-round.” If you are interested in becoming a member or to learn more about the chorus, please visit Claremorecommunitychorus1986 on Facebook or email claremorecommunitychorus1986 @yahoo.com.

DDay of Health and Fun for Seniors The 25th annual Rogers County Senior Day will be held Tuesday, April 23 at Claremore Expo Center.

By Carol Beck-Round Free health screenings, great door prizes, free breakfast and lunch, bingo with fabulous prizes and information from local businesses is on tap for the 25th annual Rogers County Senior Day set for Tuesday, April 23. Elvis will also be in the building during the silver anniversary of the popular senior event at the Claremore Expo Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Duke Mason, an Elvis impersonator, is back by popular demand to entertain area senior citizens. Mason, who has performed with many talented groups, including Elvis’s band the Jordanaires, is a multi-talented singer, playing guitar, keyboard, bass and drums. He has received worldwide acclaim for his talent and has been featured on numerous television programs. “He has been coming for many years,” says Delayna Trease, committee president. “The seniors just love him.” Seniors also love the vast array of vendors from home health care, physician services, pharmacies, insurance, finance and other senior-oriented companies who not only provide information for guests but freebies like cups, calendars, pens and medicine holders. Many of the vendors will

offer free health screenings, including blood pressure checks, BMI evaluations and muscularskeletal assessments. Screenings will take place between 9 and 11:30 a.m., allowing seniors to visit the booths during that period to talk with vendors. From 11:30 to 2, seniors and vendors will be provided a free lunch of barbeque sandwiches. During this time, seniors are eligible to win 20 to 25 prizes

during several rounds of bingo. This year’s grand prize is a recliner. To earn additional entries for door prizes offered throughout the event, senior citizens are encouraged to bring a canned food item. All cans collected will be divided among area food pantries. Although the day is filled with fun activities, “the main purpose of the event is to educate

senior citizens on health issues and what is available to them in our area,” Trease explains. “That is our main focus,” she adds, “to let them know what resources are out there.” Last year’s event hosted more than 600 seniors. “We are expecting the event to grow,” Trease adds. Pelivan will also be available free of charge to transport seniors to the event. Arrangements must

be made in advance by calling (918) 341-7300 to schedule a ride. Area students from the Claremore High School Junior Navy ROTC will be on hand to serve coffee and lunch to those in attendance. “We are very appreciative of their help,” says Trease, “because they also help us tear down and clean up afterwards.” She also mentions the generosity of the Claremore Expo Center, who donates the building for their use that day. “The seniors love this day,” says Trease. “It is a great day to socialize and interact with people they may not have seen in awhile. They also love the free health screenings as well as the fun activities we have planned.” Approximately 25 vendors are already on board for this year’s Senior Day. However, space is still available for other vendors who are interested in reaching out to this age group in the community. Vendors may contact Delayna Trease, with Summit Physical Therapy, at (918) 342-3800 or by email at delaynatrease@ptsummit.com. “We encourage seniors to come for this fun-filled informative day,” says Trease, “and tell your friends about it. We welcome seniors from anywhere.”

Can You Walk a Mile in Her Shoes? Canine friends are invited to bring awareness to and raise funds for domestic violence at this year’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes on April 27.

By Carol Beck-Round Four-footed walkers will be joining the cause to bring awareness to and raise funds for domestic violence and sexual assault in Rogers and Mayes Counties, when Safenet Services hosts its third annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” on Saturday, April 27. With the addition of PAWS for a Cause, supporters are invited to bring their canine friends to join in the fundraiser. “We decided to include dogs this year to encourage more participation and add to the fun,” says Susan Wolfenbarger, Safenet Services assistant director. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, a national event, began in 2001 when a small group of men tottered around a park in high heels to bring attention to and raise funds for local rape crisis centers, domestic violence shelters and other sexualized violence education, prevention and remediation programs. It has grown into a worldwide movement with millions raised each year for the cause. The event, designed to be fun and to get communities talking about something really difficult to talk about – gender

relations and sexual violence – will begin at 9 a.m. in Claremore. Walkers and dogs will begin the one-mile trek at the Ne-Mar Center, loop through Will Rogers Park and return. “We had a great turnout last year with over 120 walkers, including men, women and children showing up for the Claremore walk,” says Wolfenbarger. “This will be the second year we host a walk in Pryor.” The Pryor walk will begin at 2 p.m. with participants beginning at the courthouse gazebo. Registration fee for either event is $15. Walkers who pre-register will receive a T-shirt. For those who wait to register on the day of the event, T-shirts will be available for a $10 additional fee. Pre-registration begins at 8 a.m. in Claremore and 1 p.m. in Pryor. A suggested minimum of $50 in personal sponsorships per walker is encouraged, Wolfenbarger adds. There is also a $10 entry fee for the PAWS for a Cause. “You can ask your co-workers, friends and relatives to support your walk,” she says, “or invite them to join the walk

too. Domestic violence affects everyone.” Last year’s events raised $15,000. “We’d love to see the number of walkers double this year to support this cause,” says Wolfenbarger. Youngsters and students of any age are also invited to participate. The registration fee is the same and these age groups are encouraged to raise $25. “They don’t have to stop at that amount though,” Wolfenbarger adds. Participants who raise $50 or more will receive a goody bag of products, coupons and gifts donated by local businesses. People are encouraged to register in advance by going online to www.safenetservices.org, where they can find the registration form, or by calling (918) 341-1424. Walkers are encouraged to wear red shoes or red on their shoes for the event. “We will be selling red ribbons that day for $2 each,” she adds. “You can tie them to your shoes.” However, wearing red is not required. Participants are also encouraged to form a team and

Anyone who wants to get a team together can have fun during the one-mile walk. “You can invite co-workers, church members and friends to form a team. Each individual walks at his or her own pace.” “Domestic violence and sexual assault are not just women’s issues,” says Wolfenbarger. “It affects the men who care about them, their families, their friends, their coworkers, and their communities. One in four American women is a victim. That means someone you know,

someone you care about, has been or may become the victim of sexual violence. It may be your mother, your sister, your friend, your girlfriend, your wife, your coworker, or your daughter.” All proceeds will directly benefit Safenet Services’ clients.

TThe 411 on IRAS It’s never too early to start saving for retirement. By Jocelyn Wood For anyone who hasn’t figured out what to do with your tax refund, one option might be to make a contribution to your retirement account. With a decline in employee-sponsored

pension plans and social security hanging in the air, many Americans must rely on their own savings to provide for their financial needs in retirement. There are alternatives to securing

RCB Bank employees Kim James and Ashley Wood (front row) and Jocelyn Wood, Kyle Head and Tiffany Gragg (back row).

your financial future. There are two types of Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), one that offers tax advantages now and one that offers tax advantages later. When deciding which IRA is best for you, Jenni Pilgrim, RCB Bank VP Corporate Retail Coordinator, recommends speaking to a tax advisor to see which plan benefits your tax situation. Let’s look at the two types of IRAs: Traditional and Roth. A Traditional IRA gives tax advantages for saving for retirement. You may be able to take a full or partial tax deduction for the amount contributed to your plan. “The main benefit of a Traditional IRA is that it lowers taxable income,” says Pilgrim. In short: Contributions are tax deductible (eligibility requirements apply); interest grows tax-deferred until it is taken out; contributions cannot be made after age 70 ½ when required minimum distributions begin; taxes are paid on the interest earned in the account at the time of distribution (when the money is taken out). Money put into a Roth IRA

is taxed before it is deposited into the account and any interest earned is tax-free when it is taken out, as long as you meet the plan requirements. “Another great benefit is that when you turn 70 ½ you are not required to take money out of the account, as you are with a Traditional IRA,” said Pilgrim. The basics of the plan are: Roths are not tax deductible; contributions and earnings in the account grow tax free; at 70 ½ you do not have to make required minimum distributions; qualified distributions are tax-free. Other tidbits about IRAs: Contributions made to Traditional and Roth plans must not exceed annual contribution limits ($5,500 in 2013). That means you can’t make a $5,000 contribution to your Roth and a $5,000 to your Traditional in the same year. You can make a “carryback” contribution from January 1-April 15 for the previous year. Meaning, you can allocate contributions to go toward your 2012 IRA limit up to April 15, 2013. If you are over age 50, you can make a catch up contribution of $1,000 in addition to the $5,500 maximum contribution for 2013. That means $6,500 can be invested in 2013. At 59 ½ you can withdraw money from your IRA penaltyfree for living expenses to supplement income. “It’s never too early to start saving for retirement,” Pilgrim

Page 9

said. “A lot of people underestimate what they will need when they retire. Speak to a financial planner or tax advisor now to find out how much you will need to save for retirement and start putting away any amount you can, even if it’s only $500 a year. That’s $500 you can put toward medical bills, insurance, groceries, cost of living, anything later on.” RCB Bank can help you get started. One product it offers is an 18-month variable IRA that can be set up as a Traditional or Roth. You can open the IRA with an initial $250 deposit and then add $1 or more at any time. The plan offers automatic renewal or the ability to make plan changes at the end of its term. Plus, it is FDIC insured. If you can’t make the initial $250 deposit, you still have options, said Pilgrim. “Take what you can from each paycheck, put in a savings account until you build up to $250, and then open up an IRA account. Don’t leave your financial future up to chance, start saving however much you can now.” Stop by any RCB Bank branch to talk about opening a Traditional or Roth IRA or other options that may be open to you.

A mix of commercial and handcrafting vendors will be on site this year again, including Celebrating Home, the largest direct seller of home decorating and entertaining products in the U.S. Other vendors who have already signed up for this year’s popular event include Prairie Princess, a line of handcrafted soaps, body scrubs, lotions and other body products. Back Forty, a business creator of wooden products, including tea light candle holders, will be also be back again this year. “Their products are absolutely amazing,” Hill adds. For women who like bling, there will be several vendors offering jewelry, purses, clothing and other accessories in their boutique booths. Some of the jewelry is handcrafted, including personalized, stamped pendants, key chains and rings. “We also have a vendor who has a line of baby boutique items, including embroidered items, all hand-crafted,” she adds. In addition to these booths, one vendor will be offering Survivor bracelets. Made from parachute cord material, the bracelets are sold by the vendor to raise money for mission groups. Each vendor will be donating an item from his/her booth as part of the door prizes to be given away every 15 minutes. “Participants can put their name

in for the drawings at the individual booths,” Hill says. “That also helps the vendor because it draws people to their booth.” After each drawing, the names are dumped and new ones are added. “This encourages people to stay and have a good time. They think, ‘It’s only 15 minutes, so I’ll stay and put my name in for the next drawing.’” Concessions, run by the church youth, will offer lunch as well as home baked goodies during the six-hour event. All profits from the concession stand help fund summer camp at Falls Creek. Proceeds from booth rentals benefit the church. “We have used the proceeds in the past to help fund a mission trip, to help purchase a church van as well as splitting the proceeds between the youth and children’s departments for their needs,” says Hill. Booth space is still available. Cost is $30 for the 8’ x 5’ space with one eight-foot table provided for the vendor. The vendor can bring in extra tables. Deadline for signing up is April 10. TTee Off to Help Others Rogers County Training Center is gearing up for its 28th annual Golf Classic and Silent Auction.

By Cassie Woods For 28 years, the Rogers County Training Center’s annual Golf Classic has drawn hundreds of golfers who love the game and love helping others. This year’s event is scheduled for Friday, May 3 at Heritage Hills Golf Course in Claremore. The first tee time will be at 8 a.m. “All teams will be given designated tee times and flights,”

said Greg Crawford, Home of Hope’s director of vocational services. “The earlier they sign up, the better chance they will have at getting their choice of tee time.” The format will be a four-man scramble and the registration cost is $300 per team. Golfers will enjoy great beverages, Goldie’s hamburgers,

Walke Brothers hot dogs, and fun giveaways. Plus, any golfer lucky enough to make a hole in one at hole six will also have a chance to win a “super” prize donated by Jack Kissee Ford. As an added feature of the Golf Classic, participants will have an opportunity to participate in the “19th Hole” Silent Auction featuring lots of

Golf Classic organizers Jodi Manning, Amy Littleton, Jo Bostick, Missie White, Greg Crawford and Clay Whitmire show off some of the items up for auction at this year’s event.

golf-related items as well as a few specialty items. The silent auction will be taking place under the gazebo with friendly bidding going on during the tournament. The auction will close at 5 p.m. Auction items will be available for viewing at Heritage Hills the week before the event. “We have some great auction items this year,” said Amy Littleton, Golf Classic committee member. “We have two basketballs that we think fans will really enjoy. One is signed by the OSU men’s team and includes the autograph of NBA first round draft pick Marcus Smart, and the other is signed by Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook.” In addition to attending the auction and playing golf, individuals and businesses can show their support in other ways by donating items or gift certificates for their services or products for the silent auction, sponsoring a team for $300 or a golf hole for $100, or making a cash donation. All donations for this event are tax deductible. “Last year we had around 150 golfers and raised around $20,000,” said Crawford. “We are always looking for more players and sponsors. The more people that participate is more money we raise, which is more people we can help.” To date, sponsors include BancFirst, Pelco Structural, HydroHoist, Walke Brothers, McFarlin-Ingersoll Ranch, Goldie’s and Jack Kissee Ford. There are still several

sponsorship opportunities available for businesses looking for a way to get involved. The last day to sign up for a sponsorship is April 26. All proceeds from the tournament directly benefit the individuals at the Rogers County Training Center through Home of Hope. “At Home of Hope and through the training center, we provide people with developmental disabilities employment and housing opportunities so they can live a more independent life by learning vocational, social and life skills,” said Crawford. “We are currently helping approximately 45 people work and live in the community.” Home of Hope and the Rogers County Training Center also partner with the City of Claremore to staff the recycling center. Other services they provide to raise funds include document destruction at their site in the Industrial Park and thrift stores in Claremore and Pryor that operate solely through donated items. To register a team or sign up for a sponsorship at the 28th annual Golf Classic, contact Amy Littleton at (918) 283-8953 or by email at alittleton@bancfirst.com.

Spring Cleaning and Earning The JBF sale, April 11-14 in Owasso, offers parents a chance to clean out their homes and earn money by consigning gently-used items.

By Susan Erler Are you overwhelmed with the clutter of toys, outgrown sports equipment, old movies, and piles of your children’s clothing that don’t fit any longer? Wouldn’t you like to not only clear your home of these items, but get paid for them as well? Now is the time to look into a clothing and consignment event coming to Owasso. Just Between Friends is the perfect venue to sell your unwanted items utilizing a proven system that makes it fast, easy and fun. And don’t forget

profitable! Just Between Friends makes it easy to rid your home of all kinds of items and unlike a garage sale, they do all the advertising. In fact, Amber Post, local organizer for the JBF Owasso sale, says that they usually have over 450 consignors offering around 75,000 items for purchase. A sale that big brings crowds equally as large! “The sale will be held in the empty storefront directly north of the Reasor’s on Highway 20,”

Amber and Frank Post, owners of Just Between Friends Owasso.

explains Amber. “That location has been great for us in the past, offering plenty of parking and ample space to display all your items.” This is their spring/summer sale, and here is a list of acceptable items: toys, sports equipment, children’s and parenting books, games, movies and DVDs (no MA or R ratings), kid and baby bedding, baby equipment including strollers, car seats and bouncy seats, kids’ furniture and room décor, maternity clothing, and much more. For a full list of items accepted, check out the website at www.owasso.jbfsale.com. Consignors earn 60 percent on all sold items, minus a $12.50 consignor fee. But Amber offers several ways to make that percentage even higher. If you volunteer just four hours helping set up the sale, you will earn 70 percent on your items, and JBF crew members pocket a whopping 75 percent. If you have any high ticket items you need to find a new home for, such as a furniture set or a high dollar stroller, you can earn 80 percent on any item that sells for $250 or more. It just doesn’t get any easier than that. For anyone who has ever had a garage sale, they will tell you that the toughest part of getting

ready is tagging all your items. Just Between Friends has even taken the hassle out of that part of selling. When you register online, you will be assigned a consignor number and your very own barcode. Just follow the easy instructions, print off your tags with your personal barcode and you are set. “I hear from consignors all the time who tell me that they love the ease of the barcode system,” states Amber. “And they can log on to the website each night of the sale to find out exactly how much money they have earned that day.” For those who are so busy that tagging their own items is just impossible, Amber has a solution for you too. Just drop off your items by scheduling a pre-set time and you can earn money without spending time. You’ll still earn 45 to 50 percent of your sales with almost no work. What a great way to de-clutter and put a few extra dollars in your wallet. Wouldn’t it be great to be a VIP and have access to the sale before the general public? Well, you can! Volunteers who help at the sale for at least four hours not only receive a higher percentage of their sales, they also get the opportunity to shop the sale first. Consignors get to shop after

the volunteers but also before the public, which makes becoming one an even better deal. Hours for the spring/summer sale are: Thursday, April 11 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. ($2 admission for 18 and older); Friday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (with free admission); Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (with free admission and many items discounted 25 percent); and Sunday, April 14 from noon to 6 p.m. (with free admission and many items discounted 50 percent). When the sale is over, consignors have two easy options. They can pick up their unsold items Monday, April 15 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., or they are given the option to donate all unsold items to a local charity. Amber is proud to support the Dividing Bread Ministries with all of her unsold items. Dividing Bread is a thrift store and food pantry with three locations: the original store located in Collinsville; one in Hominy, which opened in April of 2011; and the Owasso store located at 11612 E 86th St. N., which opened their doors in November of 2011. To sign up or for any questions you may have, feel free to log on to the JBF Owasso website at www.owasso.jbfsale.com or email Amber Post directly at amber@jbfsale.com. For more information, contact

SoonerLawn has been providing northeast Oklahomans with top-notch lawn service for the past ten years. Owner Michael Bolton, who is also a captain in the army, guarantees your satisfaction, and his long list of customer testimonials will attest to this fact. Customer Karen Ames said, “Michael at SoonerLawn has been taking care of all the common ground at The Reserve at Broken Arrow for the past year. I have lived here for the past six years and am the landscaping chairman. The Reserve looks better than it has ever looked in the past thanks to Michael and the Sooner crew. They are very professional and take great pride in their work. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a lawn care company.” On a similar note, Steve Brown of Steve Brown Properties L.L.C. said, “Michael has been spraying and taking care of our lawn needs for about five years. neighbors, but don’t want to spend a ton of money, call SoonerLawn Weed Control & Fertilization today. According to Michael, SoonerLawn has maintained a decade of success for three simple reasons – competitive pricing, excellent customer service, and impressive results. “Give us a chance! We are willing to go above and beyond for our customers, and we provide great results. You’ll be happy with your beautiful, thick, green lawn,” says Michael. “We also have very good prices. We researched and found that our prices are below most, if not all, other local lawn care companies.” Friendly employees and top-notch results at a low price – what are you waiting for? Michael explains that their six-step program will give you a greener, healthier lawn, and now is the perfect time to get started. Step one, best completed in early spring, is an application of preemergent herbicide for crabgrass control. Steps two through five involve applying post-emergent herbicides plus fertilizer, and are done in the spring and summer.

The final step, winterized weed control to keep your yard looking great in the winter, is completed in the fall. SoonerLawn is licensed and insured and provides a variety of services for both residential and commercial customers, including weed control, fertilization, aeration, perimeter control, insecticides, mole control, turf disease control, fescue seeding, and flower bed fertilization. They also offer suggestions to the home or business owner on related issues such as proper watering and mowing. Give SoonerLawn a call – you won’t be disappointed when you end up with a gorgeous, lush, green lawn!

NNew Boutique Is Taking Flight Nesting Necessities offers a unique shopping experience in downtown Claremore.

By Carol Beck-Round When their doors opened in downtown Claremore last November, Susan Todd and Cari Bohannan never imagined the wild success of Nesting Necessities & Boutique. The young entrepreneurs, who are self-described “do-it-yourselfers,” are excited at the reception they have received from the

surrounding area and from women of all ages, including teens to women in their 70s. However, their store’s success isn’t limited to area shoppers, who enjoy browsing and purchasing clothing and accessories, home décor, furniture and paint. “We’ve had buyers from as far away as

Nesting Necessities & Boutique owners Cari Bohannan and Susan Todd display some of their merchandise available, including this trendy top and a monogram that can be used to decorate your bedroom or any other wall in your house.

California,” says Susan. “They see our postings on Facebook and call to order clothing and accessories from us.” Maybe that’s because Nesting Necessities & Boutique not only offers a wide array of affordable merchandise – often only seen in upscale department stores – but they also offer sizes ranging from junior’s small to plus size clothing. “Our customers thank us all the time because of the affordable, trendy clothing we offer in a variety of sizes, particularly the plus size,” Susan says. “We’ve even had older women who have said they would never wear leggings, purchase a pair and come back to buy another pair or two. They really like them, especially to wear around the house for warmth.” Customized jewelry, including the popular Harley & Maude vintage line, is another unique offering at Nesting Necessities. The custom-made jewelry, made in Chouteau, Oklahoma, is fashionable and fun. In addition, the vintage-style store offers a vast array of home décor, from the traditional to the eclectic, including personalized items, like decorator pillows and steel and wood monograms to

hang on your wall. “The monograms are very popular,” says Cari. “Customers purchase them to hang on the wall above their bed.” Nesting Necessities also offers room-ready custompainted furniture, using LaCraie premium furniture paint, a chalk-based paint that requires no preparation before applying. “It can be used to paint over virtually anything,” says Susan. “You don’t have to strip, sand or prime the piece before you paint.” For the do-it-yourselfer, the store also offers the premium paint for sale in addition to a product called Glacage Embossing Crème, a refinishing texture medium used to transform furniture and cabinetry into fantastic custom creations. An acrylic, water-based texturing cream, Glacage mimics the look and feel of intricately carved wood and can be used over wood, cabinetry and previously painted furniture. Furniture painting classes are offered monthly, usually on Saturday and in the evenings. “We love to take existing things and refinish and repurpose them,” says Cari. The women will have a

EEnriching Young Lives Mustard Seed Christian Preschool has helped 3 and 4-year-olds develop their God-given talents for the past 35 years. By Sheryl Sowell For the past 35 years, the mission of Mustard Seed Christian Preschool, a ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Claremore, has been to create an environment where children can discover and develop their God-given talents and use them to serve God and others. Mustard Seed offers programs for 3 and 4-year-olds, and in the fall the facility will

expand its offerings with the addition of an enriched program. Through this program, the school will be introducing computer tablets in each classroom for educational use, a small class size with a maximum of 11 students per class, and a brand-new Houghton-Mifflin Harcourt “Splash into Pre-K” reading and language arts curriculum. The school currently

has a theme-based learning program, but by including the Houghton-Mifflin reading and language arts curriculum, they will be further preparing your children for kindergarten. The 3-year-olds will be using Splash into Pre-K elements appropriate for their age. “When children are here, they are actively learning through activities, learning centers and play,” says Vicki Mosier, school administrator and chairman of the school board for the past five years. Vicki is a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, and her children attended Mustard Seed. Mustard Seed opened in 1978 to provide children a quality education in a loving, Christian environment. The preschool is the only National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accredited part-day program in Rogers County. As an NAEYC preschool, administrators and teachers go above and beyond to earn and maintain what is considered the gold standard in early childhood accreditation. With a three-star facility ranking, Mustard Seed has also achieved

the highest possible rating from the Oklahoma Department of Education. With five master teachers, the preschool offers small class sizes, which creates a very tightknit group of 50 to 60 families. “When people hear ‘Mustard Seed,’ they recognize the name. We currently have students whose parents were students at Mustard Seed, including one of our teachers, who was also a student here. Our program has a rich history in the Claremore community providing love and learning,” says Vicki. Learning doesn’t end in the classroom, however, as all students have an opportunity to experience a natural playground, offering a “green” alternative to regular playground equipment. The new playground incorporates areas for gross motor activity and outdoor classrooms, including centers for science, art and music with additional activities added each year. A traditional playground with swings and other outdoor equipment is also available. Fall enrollment for Mustard Seed Christian Preschool is currently ongoing. For more

information, check out their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/mustardseed102, their website, www.mustardseed102.com, or email mustardseed102@att.net.

Shearing Sheep the Biblical, Historical and Global Way Shepherd’s Cross’s Woolly Weekend, April 26-27, is a “sheep to shawl” experience on an authentic working sheep farm.

By Carol Beck-Round Woolly Weekend, an annual event at Shepherd’s Cross, was born from a desire to teach people about sheep, their value and their products. “People began to ask about the process and wanted to see how we shear sheep,” says Dr. Diane Dickinson, who owns and operates the working farm, along with her husband, Peter. “It started with a few families and the list grew. We didn’t plan to have an event; it just developed out of people’s interest.” What makes Shepherd’s Cross and the Woolly Weekend “sheep to shawl” event one you don’t want to miss? On this working farm, the sheep, according to Dr. Dickinson, are shorn the old-fashioned way: biblically, historically and globally. “Shearing the sheep is a necessity, as the sheep must be shorn in preparation for the heat of the summer. They would suffer heat prostration as well as other ailments if they were not given a haircut each year,” she says. “In giving the sheep a shearing, the shepherd demonstrates his love for the sheep.” The family has been raising sheep for over 20 years. Wanting to teach themselves how to shear

the old-fashioned way, they started with a book. “We’d look at the book and then the sheep,” she laughs. “It was a rough learning curve.” According to Dr. Dickinson, very few sheep flocks exist in America today. “There are fewer flocks now than before recorded history in the mid-1800s,” she says. “Most of our sheep products are now imported.” Maybe that’s what makes their annual Woolly Weekend so special. Beginning Friday, April 26 at 10 a.m. and continuing through Saturday evening, visitors to Shepherd’s Cross will have an opportunity to experience the methods used during Biblical times, which are also historically correct and continue to be used globally in countries where a modern industrialized wool mill does not exist. A true “sheep to shawl” event means the wool is shorn from the first sheep of the weekend and turned into a shawl by the end of the event. “As far as I know, we host the only authentic ‘sheep to shawl’ event in Oklahoma,” she says. The public will be able to watch as the sheep are shorn and see the wool

processed on site – washed, combed, spun and woven into a finished product. The farm museum will also be open with demonstrations of drop spinning, carding, spinning wheels, weaving and other wool fiber arts. Because Shepherd’s Cross is home to a non-profit Christian organization called Heart of the Shepherd, the event will also include Biblical references to sheep, shepherding and wool processing. “Using Isaiah 53, we interweave the message as we shear the sheep,” she says. “It’s a living parable, and it changes people’s perspective on that scripture.” In addition to observing the sheep shearing process, visitors can tour the Bible Garden, shop for “woolly” and farm-related gifts and wares in the Shepherd’s Shop, and sample farm-fresh American lamb raised in the pastures at Shepherd’s Cross. Linda Coons, Country Inn Bed and Breakfast and Catering Services, will prepare the lamb samples. “Samples come from our 100 percent natural grass fed lamb meat,” she adds. Shepherd’s Cross, located north of Claremore and

Dr. Diane Dickson demonstrates the authentic way of spinning wool, part of the Shepherd’s Cross Woolly Weekend. supported in part by the American Lamb Board, is an accredited Agritourism facility, a Made-in-Oklahoma company and a member of the Oklahoma Food Co-op. Woolly Weekend will proceed even in the case of inclement weather. All demonstrations will take place in the Amish-built barn, which houses some of the animals as well as the wool processing, farm museum and gift shop. Many items are handcrafted by local artisans. “A sheep is shorn, and the process is repeated about every

BBoots and BBQ The annual barbecue festival hosted by Claremore Reveille Rotary Club will be held May 10-11 at Will Rogers Downs. By Lorrie Ward Most people consider barbecue to be true American cuisine. But some may not know just how truly American this creation is. Centuries ago, Spanish conquerors and explorers came to this hemisphere and while they were here, they introduced pork to the Native American tribes they encountered. In turn, the Native Americans showed the Spaniards the process of cooking and preserving meat with smoke – and from this, barbecue was born. Since that time, barbecue has grown to include more than just pork – Americans barbecue beef, chicken, and other types of meat, as many savor the tenderness and taste of this delectable creation. Backyard barbecue pits and cookers have become as much a part of the American landscape as baseball and apple pie. But though most people know how to fire up the grill, there are quite a few who have turned barbecuing into an art form – and they are invited to compete in this year’s Boots and BBQ Festival at Will Rogers Downs and Cherokee Casino in

Claremore, May 10-11. This year’s Management Committee includes John Walke, who will provide meat for the taster kits and who competes in other national barbecue contests, and Steve Gragert, who has in the past been chair of the judges and is now overall chair of the event. Steve points out that Boots and BBQ offers one of the largest collection of cash prizes in Oklahoma BBQ competitions – a total of $10,000 will be awarded – and contest organizers have added a special perk in 2013: “The advantage this year is that we offer an early discounted entry fee if you sign up before April 10.” Steve also notes that Boots and BBQ hosts a dessert competition, which is fun for both competitors and participants, and is something not all competitions offer. Sign-ups are currently available for both competitors and vendors at www.claremorereveille.com. Friday night, May 10 is for cookers’ and vendors’ set up. Both groups can check in from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a team

meeting at 5:30 p.m. Musical entertainment will be provided for cookers and vendors all Friday evening. Details about the different competition levels, which range from Walnut, Mesquite, and Apple to Hickory, Pecan and Oak, can be found on the website. Even if you have no interest in competition and just love the taste of great barbeque, it is not too early to mark your calendar for Saturday, May 11, when taster kits will become available to the public at 11 a.m. for $6. Though sometimes “good things come to those who wait,” this will not be one of those times, and Steve Gragert recommends that those who want to be sure and get in on all the great flavors come as early as possible. “Taster kits are available until all food is gone,” Steve Gragert says. “In the past, those who have waited until the last minute have waited too late.” Proceeds from Boots and BBQ benefit the Claremore Reveille Rotary Club’s various community service projects, including Build Water Wells in

Steve Gragert, chair of the Boots and BBQ Festival. Nicaragua, Shoes for Claremore Kids, Medical Supply Network, End Polio Now, RYLA Student Sponsors, Will Rogers Day Parade, Leadership Training, scholarships for area students, and personalized dictionaries to Rogers County second and third graders. For more information on how to get involved in the Claremore Reveille Rotary Club’s worthwhile endeavors, visit www.claremorereveille.com. Steve hopes to see an even bigger turnout this year at what has become a traditional

Claremore event. “We always have a wide variety of barbecue and it tastes great,” he says. “Vendors, great concessions, and horse racing at the nearby Will Rogers Downs make this family event a lively affair.”

Let Our Family Take Care of Yours limitations, CHH professionals use the latest medical technologies to offer highquality care ranging from skilled nursing services and home health aides to psychiatric nursing and therapy services. The skilled nursing services are customized for each patient and may include observation, assessment and treatment for nearly any medical issue, education programs for new or changing diagnoses or medications, and specialized procedures such as mobilization and oxygen treatments. Home health aides provide customized care and services based on each patient’s needs. From

providing assistance with personal care, planning activities and home management to monitoring nutrition and vital signs, the aides do whatever they can to help their patients live a fuller life. CHH also provides exceptional psychiatric nursing. The Medicarecertified psychiatric and registered nurses offer 24-hour support, including observation and assessment, as well as education programs and psychotherapy. Another specialty area is CHH’s therapy services, which include physical, occupational and speech language therapy. The highly-trained staff uses

continued from page 1 state-of-the-art care to assist patients in recovering from physical problems arising from illness or injury and regaining independence in the activities of daily living. As an added advantage, CCH employs all of its own therapists, allowing them to cater to their patients’ needs and time schedules. “Many other companies contract their therapists from other companies,” said Wohlgemuth. “Having nine physical therapists, as well as an occupational therapist and a speech therapist on staff, really allows us to better serve our home health patients.” Representatives of CHH are available

Staying Home on Weekends Is Nutty solution to your weekend blues, at least one weekend a month, anyway! Hazel has long had a vision of creating a recurring family fun event at her place of business, combining arts and crafts with antiques while offering all of the tasty and unique products The Nut House is known for. “I am really excited to create a monthly weekend outing that offers fun activities for the kids, amazing shopping opportunities for the wives, and mouthwatering food sure to keep the husbands happy,” she says. The inaugural Route 66 Nut House Trader Days event is planned for April 19, 20 and 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Hazel is still looking for local crafters or vendors who would like to participate. If you are a crafter, please contact Hazel at (918) 266-1604 or email her at 66nuts@gmail.com. Booth spaces are available at a nominal fee and you can choose from either indoor or outdoor locations. Hot Mama’s Deli inside The Nut House will be open and ready to serve all kinds of delectable sandwiches, mouthwatering fudge, hot coffee and delicious sweets. “No one should leave here hungry,” laughs Hazel. The Nut House has been a Route 66 tradition since opening its doors in 1979. Back then, the business was very different. When Hazel’s husband surprised her by purchasing The Nut House in 2006, she decided it needed a few

changes. The biggest change was that they went from being open only a few months a year during pecan season to year-round. Hazel saw a need for customers to be able to get their products any time. “One of the biggest misconceptions people have about us is that we are only open at limited times and that fresh pecans are only available in the fall,” explains Hazel. “So many people simply purchase their pecans in the grocery store the rest of the year, but there is no way to know if they have been handled properly. We are experts when it comes to pecans, and we take measures to ensure the highest quality and freshness year-round. You never need to settle for low quality.” Don’t let the name fool you, though – The Nut House offers much more. They are constantly searching for new items to offer their customers and focus on finding quality items that you would not typically find in a grocery or discount store. Hazel makes sure they sell only top-shelf products, including Boar’s Head meats in the deli. “Boar’s Head is top of the line for deli meats, so we are proud to serve their products,” she says. “We also sell many of the local Amish food products including Amish cheeses, which are always extremely popular. I like knowing that my customers are getting the highest quality product I can find, but also at a reasonable price.” Gourmet coffees, homemade cookies

continued from page 1

and bars, handmade fudge in so many flavors it’s nearly impossible to choose, and many other sweets are all lovingly created and served at The Nut House. Make plans to enjoy lunch or at least a snack while you are there. You won’t be disappointed. For more information about the upcoming Route 66 Nut House Trader Days or any of their products, feel free to give The Nut House a call.

Don’t Forget Medicine Cabinets During Spring Cleaning drugs accounted for 77 percent of Oklahoma’s drug overdoses. Between 1997 and 2007, Rogers County had 68 confirmed overdose deaths. “According to these numbers, drug overdoses kill more Oklahomans than motor vehicle accidents at an average of two per day,” said Trisha. “The tragedy of drug overdoses forever impacts family and friends.” As an employee of Claremore High School, Teresa Dexter works with teenagers every day. Her friendly personality makes her a well-loved face on campus. But behind that bright smile is a heart that hurts for teenagers and young adults who struggle with prescription drug abuse. In April of 2010, her son Josh died of a prescription drug overdose, less than six years after she lost another son, Jacob, in a car accident. “Josh was an All-American teenager,” said Teresa. “He taught swimming lessons, umpired baseball games, was active in sports, made good

grades and never missed curfew.” After graduating from Claremore High School, Josh enrolled at RSU with an honors scholarship. His parents noticed he was having a difficult transition into college life but just thought it was normal growing pains. In December of 2009, Josh lost his scholarship, but because he still had a GPA above 3.0 and was working full time while attending school, Teresa wasn’t terribly alarmed. “Looking back, all the signs were there.” said Teresa. “Unfortunately we noticed them all as signs of other things. He was a little moody, but we assumed that was because he had to move home after losing his scholarship, which can be a hard transition for a young adult. He had lost some weight, but he wasn’t working out like he had been in high school.” It was only a couple of weeks before Josh’s death that his parents discovered he had been experimenting with prescription drugs. Teresa’s

message to parents is that it truly can happen to anyone, so the only way to prevent a problem is to talk with children about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. “Education is key, and that responsibility starts with the parents,” said Teresa. “The scariest thing is that people believe that because it comes in a little orange bottle with a doctor’s name on it that it’s safe, but these are dangerous chemicals when not used as prescribed.” Prescription medications are intended for only the patient named on the bottle. Patients should always follow instructions on their medications, take only as directed by their physician and never share medicine. If you have others who live or visit your home, lock up your prescriptions and remember to properly dispose of them when they expire or are no longer needed. With the help of Healthy Community Partnership drug drop boxes have been installed at the Claremore, Chelsea and

Catoosa Police Departments as well as the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office. Residents can visit any of these locations to safely dispose of unused or unwanted prescription medications. For more information, search Facebook for Healthy Community Partnership, or call (918) 260-0301.

RRelay For Life The annual event raising funds for the American Cancer Society, Relay For Life of Rogers County will be held April 12-13 at RSU. By Lorrie Ward When one stands on the expanse of lawn, trees and sidewalk in front of the Rogers State University auditorium, it is hard to imagine this park-like setting bustling with any more life than just a few students taking a short cut between classes. But according to Roger Evans of RCB Bank, on the evening of April 12, this area will come alive and transform into a vibrant, carnival-type atmosphere. As the American Cancer Society’s main fundraiser, Relay For Life deals with a serious subject as it raises money for cancer patients and research, but this event is designed to provide a festive night of fun for the whole family. Relay For Life of Rogers County begins at 7 p.m. on Friday evening, with the Opening Ceremony and Survivor Victory Lap. At 10 p.m., everyone will pause for moments of quiet reflection during the Luminaria Ceremony. The walking track will light up with glow stick lights in paper bags that have been purchased for $5 in memory of a cancer patient or in honor of a cancer survivor, and bagpipes will play

Roger Evans of RCB, Relay For Life of Rogers County chair, and Dawn Tatro of RSU Athletics, in front of the Rogers State University auditorium, which will come to life the night of the relay.

inspirational hymns in the background. Then the games and team events will begin and last all night as people walk the illuminated track. Teams host a whole array of fun and engaging events. For

example, Roger relates that last year, Rogers State’s Kappa Sigma Chapter had an egg toss. Team members built a frame of two-byfours and strung it with chicken wire. Then they stood on one side and let participants throw

eggs at them through the chicken wire. “They went through 200 dozen eggs,” Roger says. “People had a blast.” Another team gave Rickshaw Rides for donations. Roger expects these events to return this year, along with all

Page 29

kinds of fun games like threelegged races and a hula hoop walk. In keeping with the festive atmosphere, deejay Jason Casey will donate his time that night and provide a variety of music, including rock and roll, country, and movie soundtrack selections. There will be plenty of food all night, as teams will be selling different selections, and Roger reports that one team always hosts a Cowboy Breakfast that opens at 5 a.m. Saturday morning and runs until the event closes at 6 a.m. But even with all the laughter and good times that teams put together, each team always has one person on the track walking the Relay For Life, so the true purpose of the event is never forgotten. Even though Rogers County has hosted Relay For Life for 18 years, Roger knows there are still many who don’t know about or understand this event. “One year a gentleman was driving by and stopped to see what was going on,” Roger says. “He had recently lost his wife to cancer and was shocked and touched that people were doing this. We want people to come out and see what this is all about, just as this gentleman did – it’s something you have to experience.”

Jean and other event organizers understand that not every pet or person is a runner, so they brought back the 1-Mile Fun Run this year for those who

want to walk, run a short distance, or just enjoy nature. “This event was designed to help socialize pets,” says Jean. “It promotes a healthy relationship between you and your dog.” Jean reports that last year, one lady participated in the event specifically for this purpose and to help her dog learn to be around other dogs and people. She was pleased to find that her dog did very well. Jean also notes that the location for the Fido Fun Run is perfect for those who want to enjoy nature with their pet. “Last year, we had people who had never been to Claremore Lake,” she says. “They were surprised at how beautiful it is.” Registration for the Fido Fun Run opens at 8 a.m. on April 27. The 1-Mile Fun Run begins at 9 a.m. with a registration fee of $10 per person/canine team. The 5K competitive race starts at 9:30 a.m. and is $20 per person/canine team. Participants may also register early at the Claremore Animal Shelter. For the protection and health of everyone, all dogs are required to be current on their rabies vaccination before registration

can be accepted. Just as they did this year by adding the 5K race, Jean Hurst and other event organizers hope to implement new events at the Fido Fun Run annually to make it bigger and better each year. “Even though the 5K is a competitive event, we want to keep things fun and casual,” says Jean. “We are looking for a good group of people with good animals to come out and have a great time.” For more information on the Fido Fun Run, contact Claremore Animal Shelter by calling (918) 341-1260. While you are marking your calendars for the Fido Fun Run, you will also want to flip a few months ahead and note Claremore Animal Shelter’s upcoming “Casting for Canines” fishing tournament in June and the Dog Expo, August 24-25.

RRope in Family Fun

The 8th Annual Green Country Classic Ranch Rodeo will be April 26 and 27 at the Claremore Expo Center, Claremore.

By Tanya Andrews Visit Claremore welcomes the 8th Annual Green Country Classic Ranch Rodeo (GCCRR), coming April 26 and 27. Sixteen Green Country Ranch Teams will be competing in this year’s event! Rodeo events include Team Sorting, Wild Cow Milking, Team Doctoring, Calf Branding, Ranch Bronc Riding,

Junior Ranch Rodeo, and the Cowboy Trade Show. The rodeo was formed in 2005 and was sanctioned by the WRCA the same year. The GCCRR goals were to produce a high quality WRCA rodeo that our Green Country Ranches could compete in close to home. Another was to form a Cowboy

Crisis Fund where money could be raised to help local cowboys and their families in times of financial hardship due to injury, illness, or other unforeseen circumstances. To raise money for the Crisis Fund a silent auction is held during the annual rodeo, with items donated by local businesses, and ranch teams, and tradeshow vendors. The rodeo committee also established a scholarship program for the children of their competing ranch teams. Now the rodeo is giving up to five $1,000 scholarships annually. Since their first event in 2005 they have always donated proceeds to a charitable organization. Organizations like Gatesway Foundation and the Akdar Shrine for the Shriners Hospitals. In 2012 they chose to donate their proceeds to the Children’s Cancer Center at Saint Francis Hospital; this will be their chosen organization again in 2013. They support the hospital’s staff and outstanding care given to these children. As an added bonus, chances on a pair of handmade Mike Emberson spurs are being sold

throughout the rodeo weekend. All proceeds from the sale will go to the Children’s Hospital. For a second year, the Junior Ranch Rodeo will be a highlighted event. “It is a joy to watch the future top hands of our industry compete in traditional ranch rodeo events,” said Lester Gagan of GCCRR. The JRRA rodeo is on Saturday, April 27 and starts at 11am. Tickets are $5 at the door. The 8th Annual Green Country Classic Ranch Rodeo will be April 26 and 27 at the Claremore Expo Center, Claremore. The huge Cowboy Trade Show is free to the public and opens at 3 pm on Friday, and at 9 am on Saturday. The Rodeo performance starts at 7 pm on Friday, with Saturday’s performance at 6 pm. Tickets are $10 and are available at the

Claremore Expo Center, Mid America Farm & Ranch in Talala, Reid Veterinary Clinic in Nowata, American Bank of Oklahoma in Ramona, and Central National Bank in Bartlesville. “We invite everyone out to enjoy this great family event,” said Tanya Andrews, executive director of Visit Claremore. “It is truly a great gathering!” A complete schedule of events can be found at www.visitclaremore.org or call Claremore Expo Center at 918-342-5357.

The Social Host law puts a shared responsibility for underage drinking on the person providing the location for the gathering. Adults or minors can be cited and fined under the Social Host law. The Social Host law means it’s up to you to make sure kids don’t drink in your home or on your property. The law is clear: If kids under the age of 21 are drinking alcohol at a gathering, and you’re providing the location for that gathering, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE – whether you’re an adult or a minor, and whether you rent, own, or simply provide the location.
