Vendors and celebrities will fill the 90,000-square-foot Claremore Expo Center with booths and demonstrations during the three-day event that will offer something for everyone in the family. Attendees can browse through an assortment of booths related to hunting, fishing, boating, hiking, motocross, camping, canoeing, traveling, cabins and resort rentals, and anything else that takes place outdoors during the event. Well-known individuals in the fields of hunting, fishing, alligator trapping and BMX stunts, as well as others who are making a

name for themselves in the world of outdoor sports, will be on hand to demonstrate their skills, answer questions and sign autographs. Campers, RVs and ATVs will also be on display. 2)EMOTIONS ― Be aware of the negative emotions that show up during a transition and can last for a few years after: abandonment, fear, grief, and low self-esteem. All of these emotions can lead to feeling overwhelmed ― physical fatigue and making short-term decisions can be disastrous. Take your time and make clear and rational decisions.

3)DECISIONS ― The decisions we make while in transition will shape our future as we settle into our “new normal.” Each decision will have a personal and a financial consequence. The secrets to successful decision making while in transition begin with understanding your new resources, organizing and prioritizing your choices, and allocating your resources to create the life you would most like to live. purpose and consider your new choices in light of your most important life goals. Uncertainty and emotions affect your decisions. Understanding this and seeking helpful, non-biased advice, especially when it comes to your money, is really important. Family and friends often offer lots of advice. They usually mean well but it may or may not be the best financial decision for you. Remember these 3 things when going through a difficult transition: 1)UNCERTAINTY ― Each time we go through a transition we face new responsibilities and choices. As a result, our emotions become more turbulent and we have a feeling of uncertainty. Remember that transitions have a beginning and an end,

Life transitions are a time of change ― “what was” no longer exists and “what will be” has not yet taken shape. These changes almost always come with a tidal wave of feelings. Shock, fear, loss of identity and self-esteem, guilt, confusion, feeling overwhelmed, and anger are some of the most common emotions folks experience during a major life transition. In addition, people often find their relationships with family and friends begin to change. Having been a marriage and family therapist and now a financial advisor for more than two decades, I have seen and experienced more than a few of life’s changes. Some of the biggest life transitions that I see are loss of a loved one, divorce, loss of a job, retirement, and sale of a business. There are, of course, many more, but these seem to top the list. By definition, a transition is a temporary condition. Although, it certainly doesn’t feel like it! These tough times are often marked by a painful period of letting go, reassessing, and coming to terms with the new reality of our lives. One of the keys to a successful transition is to take the time to re-examine your sense of

IInsuring Small Business Success David Merriman Insurance Agency – State Farm Insurance can help small business owners with all of their insurance needs. By Lorrie Ward them, both today and in the future. He then will help them assess their existing policies and products, to see how well those products are fulfilling their goals. David feels it is very important to evaluate each product in relation to the other, because sometimes clients will have too much coverage in some areas and not enough in others – or even no coverage in some areas at all. It is also important to assess the state of the business owner’s assets, liabilities and income in order to make better decisions on needed products and help the client with protection, growth and management of their assets. Through this discussion, David is able to assess gaps in coverage and suggest ways to fill those gaps, encourage the client to set priorities in both needs and goals, and help the client come up with a plan of action that will help him or her move toward successful fulfillment of insurance and business goals. David explains that many companies like to have all their policies with one company because it makes things much simpler and helps things run

more smoothly. Small businesses carry policies like general liability, workers’ compensation, employer practices liability, commercial auto, and retirement planning as an employee benefit.

By visiting with one of David Merriman’s insurance agents, business owners can be sure they are hearing the voice of experience, from someone who has truly walked in his or her

shoes. “We talk commercial business insurance every day in our office, because we have to deal with that issue ourselves,” says David. “And we talk to individual clients about their occupations, so we are able to identify the areas in which we can help.” David relates that often small business clients are so happy with how his agency and State Farm fulfills their business needs, they often extend the relationship into their personal insurance needs as well. “If I can help a client with his or her small business insurance needs, I might even be able to help with their personal policies as well, like home, life and auto,” he says.

There is an old Native American proverb that says, “Never criticize a man until you have walked a mile in his moccasins.” This saying is often used in reference to blame or judgment, but it can also be applied to the areas of empathy and understanding. Simply put: a person who has “been there” can better help navigate someone through a challenging or difficult situation than one who has not. That’s why David Merriman and his team at David Merriman Insurance Agency – State Farm Insurance is the perfect choice for all your small business insurance needs. “I feel I have an understanding of small business owners with regards to employee benefits, payroll, insurance and more, because I am a small business owner myself,” says David. “I can discuss business owners’ worries and truly understand things they experience on a daily basis – and also help them with products and services that State Farm offers.” When approached by small business owners, David first helps them identify their goals and needs by asking questions about what is most important to

to Benefit the BBoogying Community “A Celebration of Helping Others: Dancing with the Stars of Rogers County” will be held Saturday, March 9 at the Robson Performing Arts Center. By Carol Beck-Round Dancers will be jiving, swinging and tangoing their way across the Robson Performing Arts Center stage on Saturday, March 9 at 7 p.m. as part of “A Celebration of Helping Others: Dancing with the Stars of Rogers County.” Co-sponsored by the Claremore

Reveille Rotary Club and RCB Bank, the event will feature dance couples representing several nonprofit Rogers County agencies. The event, according to Dr. Richard Mosier, has a two-fold purpose. “We want to bring recognition to some agencies in

our county that are not widely recognized for the good they do in the community. They are the real stars,” says Mosier, who is spearheading the event, along with members of the Reveille Rotary Club. “It will give those agencies exposure and perhaps promote a feeling of unity to the broader community.” The Claremore Reveille Rotary Club’s role in the event is a reflection of the members’ commitment to community service. “As an organization dedicated to helping others, we assist locally with college scholarships, the Dictionary for 3rd Grader project throughout Rogers County, along with other area projects. Part of the proceeds from the event will help fund our ongoing projects.” “Sometimes people find themselves in circumstances beyond their control and need help,” he adds. “The non-profits who will be participating in Dancing with the Stars go out and do their thing to help others and not everyone knows the role they play in bringing our com-

munity together.” Dancing with the Stars – Rogers County style – will showcase couples representing the following agencies: Volunteers for Youth, Claremore Meals on Wheels, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Rogers County Adult Day Care, Rogers County Literacy Council, Tri-County CASA, William W. Barnes Children’s Advocacy Center, Healthy Community Partnerships, Claremore Public Schools Foundation, Safenet Services and Rogers County Youth Services. Prior to each couple’s performance, a short video produced by a student enrolled in NTC’s EAST program, will highlight the featured agency. Booths will also be set up in the PAC lobby so visitors can browse to learn more about the function of each organization represented. Although three judges will be raising their scorecards to rate each of the couples, the audience will have the final vote of the evening. During a 20-minute intermission, audience members will be able to visit the non-profit booth of their choice to cast a vote by dropping dollars into a canister. “The People’s Choice will be declared the winner,” says Mosier. “A male and female winner will each receive a trophy declaring that they are ‘The Best Darn Dancer in Rogers County, 2013.’” During the intermission and following the event, A Bar Bunkhouse Band, made up of Rogers County musicians, will perform. For a $20 admission fee,

Paige Montgomery and her partner, Joel Reimer, practice their dance steps. Want a Healthy Heart? Drink Water. BY SHIRLEY HALL

Have you pushed the thermostat up above 70, pulled out the throws and warm blankets, thrown another log on an already flaming fire, found yourself dressing in multiple layers? Most of us will respond with an astounding “YES!” Our extremities dictate and we acknowledge the importance of staying warm and protected in these ever changing temperatures. What they don’t dictate is our need to remain hydrated. Cold weather, drier air, low humidity and exposure to dry furnace heat can lead to higher blood pressures, narrow arteries, dry coughs, flaky skin, chapped lips and those annoying seasonal headaches – all of which are outward signs that our body needs more fluid. Did you know waiting until your thirsty means your body is already experiencing mild dehydration? Drinking the right amount of water is essential to staying healthy. Is good clean water a miracle drug? Opinions differ, however recent studies have found staying hydrated may protect your heart and reduce the risk of heart attack. Researchers at Loma Linda University found women who drank more than five glasses of water a day were

41% less likely to die from a heart attack during the study period than those who drank less than two glasses. The protective effect of water was even greater in men. Men who drank more water had a 54% lower risk of a fatal heart attack. When researchers included the consumption of coffee, tea, juice, milk, and alcohol the risk of heart attack increased. They found that women who drank large amounts of liquids other than water were more than twice as likely to die of a heart attack, and non-water drinking men had a 46% increase in risk. Water is absorbed quickly and easily into the bloodstream, thinning the blood, and helping to prevent artery clogging clots. We use water for breathing, sweating, and nutrition absorption; as a

lubricant for fluid around joints, eyes, spinal cords and membranes. Water cleans our systems, provides energy by carrying nutrients to body cells and maintains the optimum moist environment for the proper functioning of ear, nose, throat, and lungs. Most importantly water regulates our overall body temperature. How much water do we need? We know climate, age, medical conditions, exercise routines, diet and lifestyles differ. We know a person who perspires heavily will need to drink more water, and medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, cystic fibrosis, and some medications can cause dehydration. There are numerous adages surrounding how much water we should drink each day. Some say eight glasses of water a day while others say drink half your body weight in ounces. Despite these differences the fact remains, drinking the right amount of water is heart healthy and key to healthy living. The economics are as simple as the health benefits. With the addition of a water filter, clean, tasty, water can come directly from your tap. Filtered water is health conscious, and environmentally sound.

HHave a Seat, My Sweet Surceé Home Décor & Gifts offers beautiful custom furniture as well as special gifts for your Valentine’s Day sweetheart.

By Shelly Robinson When Kristen (Pallett) LaMont graduated with her degree in interior design from the University of Central Oklahoma this past May, she headed right back to her hometown of

Owasso. After working part time for more than three years at Surceé during college breaks and summers, Kristen was ready to begin her professional career at the store she already loved.

Interior Designer Kristen (Pallett) LaMont shows some of the newest line of custom furnishings available at Surceé Home Décor & Gifts in Owasso.

“Surceé has always had a great variety of gifts and home décor, but now we are offering furniture, lighting, mirrors, rugs and artwork,” shared Kristen. “It’s really exciting to help customers find everything they need to create a personal look all in one place.” Regular Surceé shoppers know that owner Laura Sanders doubled the size of the store last fall and that extra space is filled with beautiful furniture lines, available in a variety of fabrics. They also offer custom-ordered furniture in a smaller selection of fabrics. Laura says that the trend for large-scale homes has created a need for furniture that accommodates high ceilings and open areas. “Furniture height is important in creating the balance in a room, as well as properly sized light fixtures and chandeliers,” explains Laura. “Whether you are looking to finish the design of a newly constructed home or incorporate your style in an existing home, we have what you need.” Surceé customers have requested more artwork, and the new space has also allowed Laura

to expand in that area. Vignettes around the store help customers see how pieces work together, and if you have a specific area you are working on, you are welcome to bring in a photo and the Surceé girls will help you create that signature look they are known for. Kristen, Laura and her mother, Sue Hatfield, are also available for in-home consultations and say that keeping up with the latest trends keeps the store fresh and everchanging. “The word for spring is color, and lots of it,” smiled Laura. “I know our clients will enjoy the new items that are starting to arrive.” Of course, Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and you’ll want to be prepared with something special for all the sweethearts in your life. Kristen suggests the Waxing Poetic line of sentimental jewelry with a vintage touch. “Waxing Poetic items are so personal, no one ever walks out with the same thing twice. New charms and bracelets with a hammered look are very popular, whether you are adding to an existing bracelet or starting something new.” A trunk show will be held February 7 from 2 to 7 p.m. and will feature extra pieces not normally available and a sneak peek at the new spring line. There is even an engravable line that can be custom ordered. Traditional favorites including lotions, bubble baths and perfumes by Lollia make wonderful gifts, and you’ll want to check out the latest scents, At Last and Wander. Hard to find battery-operated candles with

Page 11

remote control are very popular. Embellished flip flops, great frames and a variety of cooking and decorating books help you find something for everyone on your list. As the exclusive Brighton dealer in the Owasso area, you will find a vast selection of items including their newest line, My Flat In London. From purses and perfume, wallets and watches, all kinds of jewelry and the ever popular charm bar, Brighton items are funky and fun. Surceé offers registries for babies and brides, and anyone can fill out a wish list to keep on file if your special someone is shopping-challenged. Free gift bags or wrap is available, and you can even call ahead and have something ready to go. What could be simpler? Like Surceé on Facebook for daily updates, giveaways and new items, and be sure to visit their website at www.surceégifts.com. Surceé is located just south of Cracker Barrel in the Tyann Plaza shopping center. Store hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

TTake Action to Save More Effectively America Saves Week is February 28-March 2. By Jocelyn Wood Saving money doesn’t have to be a daunting task. In fact, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference when it comes to improving your financial health. Take it one small step at a time. Adjusting one spending habit slightly – like putting all your coins in a jar or skipping that morning coffee once a week – can bring in big savings. RCB Bank’s Customer Service Reps Robert Gettings, of Oklahoma City, and Terri Ross, of Pryor, along with AVP Corporate Retail Coordinator Jenni Pilgrim, of Claremore, share their personal savings strategies. “I give myself an allowance each week in cash. If I run out before the week is over, I’m out of money. If I have any extra money left over, I put it back into my savings, not my checking. Another thing I do is bring my lunch everyday instead of going out – saves at least $5 a day,” said Robert Gettings. “I drink water instead of soda when I go out for a meal, which saves quite a bit of money.

Motivation to save. RCB Bank employee Sarah Smith, of Pryor, says her family saves money by putting all their coins in a jar, which they will use to fund their upcoming vacation to Sea World. Restaurant food portions are often larger than one person should have, so I occasionally share a meal with whomever I’m dining out with if they share the same savings and improving health goals. It’s a win, win!” said Terri Ross.

“I coupon for groceries and household items. Sounds like a lot of work, I know, but it really isn’t. I visit Moneysavingqueen.com to get local daily coupons, money saving tips and meal planning ideas. It’s a great resource. I also grab the Sunday paper and clip

ROGERS COUNTY

coupons for products I use,” said Jenni Pilgrim. Set your savings on autodrive with online banking, a nosweat savings tool that can help you enhance your financial wellness. Use it to set up automatic money transfers from your checking to savings, like the money earned from your RCB Bank my Cashback checking account or other rewards cards. You can schedule automatic onetime or recurring bill-payments so your bills are paid on-time, every time, saving you from costly late fees. You can also set up email alerts to remind you when bills are due, account balances are getting low or your paycheck comes through. RCB Bank’s online banking program even allows you to set up custom alerts, including birthdays and anniversaries so you can have help remembering to bring home flowers. “I use online banking to save money by setting up automatic transfers from checking to savings and save a certain amount of money from each paycheck,” said Robert. “I use online banking to save money by not having to write checks or pay postage. Goodbye to stop payment fees for lost checks in the mail and late fees for checks that arrived late,” said Terri. “I use the online banking check feature to save money. I have one bill that has to be mailed each month; the company doesn’t accept electronic payments, so I set up a monthly online auto-check payment and the check is mailed on time every month. I’ll never have to pay another late fee because I forgot

Page 13

to mail the check,” said Jenni. To learn more money savings tips, ask your friends what they’re doing to save or stop by any RCB Bank branch and ask us. Photography, Using Social Media, DSLR Video, Wedding Photography, Lightroom, Design and many more. The keynote talks will be: Lighting Techniques – Joe McNally is an internationally acclaimed photographer whose career has spanned 30 years and included assignments in over 50 countries. GGet to Goodwill Goodwill offers a great selection of clothing, accessories, home items and much more at unbeatable prices. By Duane Blankenship Goodwill Industries of Tulsa has reached out to area communities with programs and services, training facilities, and retail stores for 86 years. Although we’ve seen growth and change in Goodwill, their mission remains the same: to promote and make possible for every individual the dignity and self-sufficiency that comes with employment. Goodwill puts people to work and improves lives. In doing so, we all benefit. Goodwill has ten stores and 24 donation locations in Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Glenpool, Bartlesville, Claremore, McAlester, Joplin and Carthage. Jaime Monroe is store manager for the Goodwill store located on Southwest Boulevard in Tulsa. “There are still people who don’t know about Goodwill retail stores and what great selections we have every day at really great prices,” she stated. New items arrive Monday through Friday each week, and new merchandise is displayed each day. “We have an excellent selection of active wear,” said Jaime. If you’re working on getting fit, do so in style with

athletic gear from Goodwill. “And when you drop your first ten pounds, you can buy a whole new outfit because our prices are so affordable,” she added. You’ll also want to shop Goodwill for your new spring wardrobe. All sizes of children’s clothing and shoes are basepriced at $2.49. Their stores also carry accessory items like scarves, belts, shoes, purses and jewelry. Jaime says they get lots of unique, vintage 40s and 50s jewelry items that can be purchased at truly great prices. You’ll find purses and other designer label items, juniors and student fashion trends with name brand labels that are popular with teens, all at a fraction of their original cost. Visit Goodwill for a variety of housewares to decorate any room of your house. You’ll find small kitchen countertop appliances including toasters, blenders, coffee makers, and more. “Many of our customers shop from one store to another because the merchandise is different at each store and new items appear daily,” said Jaime.

If you enjoy good books, the Southwest Boulevard and the Garnett locations have great book selections. Both stores have books that are no longer in print. When’s the last time you saw a Betty Crocker cookbook? You’ll also enjoy an assortment of Oklahoma history and Native American books that are difficult to find. Goodwill features Senior Day twice each month with 25 percent off your entire purchase if you are 55 or older. Customer Appreciation Day is once each month and also features 25 percent off the entire purchase for any customer. Mark your calendars now for February 16, the date of Goodwill’s Winter Half Price Sale featuring all men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing at 50 percent off. Visit www.goodwilltulsa.org to view the Goodwill Value Planner or ask for a copy when you visit any store. Goodwill is also on Facebook and Twitter. Rita Gilliam, director of retail sales, is happy to announce some exciting changes coming to Goodwill this year. “Expanding our retail operations allows us to

First Assistant Michelle MacKool and Store Manager Jaime Monroe show off active wear items in Goodwill’s Southwest Boulevard retail store. grow our programs and services. Our growth has been possible because of the support of our donors and because shoppers continue to discover the fun and value to be found at Goodwill.” Goodwill will have a Reopening Celebration for their Joplin store on Thursday, February 28. This is a brand new store, same location, and same sales team as the store that was destroyed by tornadoes nearly two years ago. This spring, Goodwill will break ground on a brand new Southwest Boulevard store. It will be two blocks south of the

current store location, and Jaime Monroe will be the store manager. A grand opening will be announced for the fall of 2013. If you haven’t done it before, try shopping the Goodwill retail stores in our area. You’re sure to be pleasantly surprised. For more information, contact

VValentine’s Gifts with a Kick Organizers and vendors gear up for the third annual Valentine’s Day Arts and Crafts Show at the J.M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum in Claremore.

By Cassie Woods Mark your calendars for February 9 and 10 for the Valentine’s Day Arts and Craft Show at the J.M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum in Claremore. The third annual

event is a great place to pick up a unique gift for your valentine. Homemade jewelry, candles and other crafts will be available. When you are done browsing the rows of vendor booths, be

sure to check out the great museum exhibits. “We really enjoy this event and have received a lot of positive feedback from our patrons,” said Wayne McCombs,

Wayne McCombs, director of the J.M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum, and Holly Thompson, owner of Dorothy’s Flowers, show off a few of the items visitors will find at the Valentine’s Day Arts and Craft Show.

J.M. Davis Museum director. “It is quite popular, has high attendance and is really just a lot of fun.” The venue hosts both a Christmas and Valentine’s Arts and Crafts Show each year. The museum makes $10 on each booth fee that goes back into promoting the event, but the real reward is the partnership developed between the vendors and the museum. “We see it as an opportunity to help the community while bringing people to the museum,” said McCombs. “It gives locals a chance to showcase their products at an opportune time while opening the gun collection up to an audience who may not otherwise visit the museum. It’s a win-win.” McCombs hopes those new to the museum will tell others about the collection or return with their kids or grandkids. Twenty-five vendors are scheduled to be at the event selling several different items. The event organizers limit the booth space to one or two vendors selling similar items to ensure variety for shoppers as well as help ensure that it is a

profitable event for the vendors. The items available at this year’s show include a wide variety of handmade jewelry, towels, crafts and home décor. Vendors include Dorothy’s Flowers and Cowgirl Bling as well as direct sales items such as Scentsy, Mary Kay and Tupperware. “This is a great opportunity for people looking for a unique Valentine’s gift,” said McCombs. “And it’s a bonus for gun enthusiasts who can check out the collection while their spouses shop the arts and crafts.” The J.M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum houses the largest private gun collection in the world. It also has saddles, spurs, local ranching brands, German beer steins, World War I posters, military weapons, John Rogers statuary, Native American artifacts and more. With over 50,000 items on display, there is something for everyone. Event hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The event has already sold max capacity for booth space, but a vendor who may be interested in being on this year’s waiting list or added for next year should contact the museum at (918) 341-5707.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake path.” BBBS invites all people, not just volunteers, to get involved with the local organization by forming a team of five to raise funds and have fun while helping children in the process. Each team is challenged to raise $500 or $100 per individual. Each individual who raises the recommended amount will receive a Bowl for Kids’ Sake T-shirt. “Each person who raises $125 or more will be entered into a drawing for prizes,” says Wilbourn. “The more money you raise, the more entries you earn. Last year, we gave away a Kindle Fire.” “Funds raised from this

annual event allow our organization to carefully make more mentoring matches and provide ongoing assistance for mentors, mentees and families to help sustain long successful relationships unique to our program,” she adds. Helping vulnerable children beat the odds, BBBS depends on donations to help conduct background checks on volunteers to ensure child safety, and provide ongoing support for children, families and volunteers to build and sustain long-lasting relationships, key to successful mentoring. Big Brothers Big Sisters is proven by independent research to improve children’s odds for

succeeding in school, behaving nonviolently, avoiding drugs and alcohol, and breaking negative cycles. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma serves more than 2,000 children annually. To learn how you can change how children grow up in Oklahoma go to www.bbbsok.org. Bowl for Kids’ Sake is Big Brothers Big Sisters’ premiere fundraising event, raising more than $20 million nationwide each year. For more than 40 years, Bowl for Kids’ Sake has supported Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the country. “Our goal for the Claremore area this year is $40,000,” says Wilbourn. “We are also setting a goal of 80 teams this year to participate in the fun

and fundraising.” Local businesses such as AXH Air-Coolers, BancFirst, Grand Bank, Pelco Structural, RCB Bank, Rogers State University and many civic organizations such as Junior Ocieleta, Rotary Clubs, and of course local schools, church groups, friends and families all get together to form the fundraising teams. Corporate sponsors for this year’s event include Pelco, Kingpin Presenting Sponsor; AXH, Rogers State University, BancFirst, RCB Bank, Pizza Hut, Grand Bank, Dale Marlar, Hillcrest, RCI Insurance, WalMart, and Rib Crib. Buying or Selling a Vehicle? our best to maintain our unique customer service,” said Monte. America’s Auto Auction has conducted weekly auctions for over 50 years. “We continue to see increases in the number of vehicles we sell each year, and the quality of offerings continues to be upgraded,” he added. Bilingual assistance is available on the lot and in the auction barn, where pre-owned cars and trucks are sold at wholesale prices. You’ll find a huge variety of makes and models, and many are sold with no reserve prices. If you’ve never attended an America’s Auto Auction event, you should visit online and click

Public Auctions for a preview of vehicles being presented at the Monday evening sale. When visiting the website, you’ll have a chance to become familiar with the step-by-step process of buying or selling a vehicle, and the information can be presented in English or Spanish. The public is invited to visit the America’s Auto Auction lot on Monday after 1 p.m. This is your opportunity to check out vehicles scheduled to be auctioned that evening. Although you will not be permitted to drive them at that time, you will be able to start the engine and see if all the “bells and whistles” are working

properly. You may find items that will need attention after the purchase. Whether you plan to buy or sell a vehicle, there are two ways to do it. If a seller places a vehicle as a “Red Light” sale, the vehicle is sold “as is.” That means the vehicle has no warranty and no guarantees. If a vehicle is sold as a “Green Light,” it is sold with the assurance that the engine, transmission, and rear end are in working order, and the buyer will have the opportunity to drive the vehicle before leaving the grounds. A minimum bid price is posted on every vehicle. Be sure you fully understand

ground tricks. The team has been featured on the CBS Morning Show and travels around the country entertaining and encouraging youth to work hard and stay drug-free. Kaleb Summers, the Oklahoma Noodling Champion, will be available all three days of the expo to conduct seminars, share his experiences, and meet and greet the public. “You don’t want to miss any of Kaleb’s presentations - his outdoor adventures are exciting for sure,” says Dell Davis of the Claremore

Chamber. Summers, a Claremore native, was part of the “2012 Okie Noodling Tournament” champion team. The Dog Creek Outfitters will also be on hand to share their culinary skills with original chuck wagon cooking demonstrations. The team from Claremore includes Mike Shelton, John Lewis and Larry Hougland. Archery exhibitions will also be a part of the event as Charlie Merz, a bow hunting expert, will be on hand for several seminars. “We will have a wide range

SSurgeon Has Knee Up on the Competition Patients of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ronald LaButti praise his skill and success rate. By Joshua Danker-Dake Roberta Maxwell is one of many patients who came to Dr. Ronald LaButti after having a less than ideal experience with a different doctor. “I had my hip replaced in 2008 with another doctor,” says Roberta. “That doctor said that the hip replacement would affect my knees, and it did – I devel-

oped severe pain in both knees. In 2011, I went and got steroid shots, but they didn’t help very much at all.” In 2012, she went to see Dr. LaButti for another round of shots. “But Dr. LaButti took Xrays and told me that the shots wouldn’t help because my knees were bone-on-bone,” Roberta

says. She scheduled knee replacement surgery for her right knee, which she underwent on November 15, 2012. She went home on November 18 and began rehab with a continuous passive motion machine. “Two weeks later, I had already reached 110 degrees of

Robotic Assisted Total Knee Replacement Available exclusively with Dr. Ronald LaButti

This brand-new technology produces a 3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, the iBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well. When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between the implant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precise measurements made dynamically in real time. There are only five “iBlock” units in the United States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.

She says, “I walked a lot because I got muscle cramps. By four and a half weeks, I was able to walk without a walker or cane, and I had no pain – and I’ve had no pain in my knee since the surgery.” Roberta will have her left knee replaced by Dr. LaButti in May. Roberta highly recommends Dr. LaButti. “He’s a very good surgeon, and I really appreciated how well he explained everything I asked him about. My mother also used Dr. LaButti several years ago, and she also had a good experience.” Dr. LaButti is board certified in orthopedic surgery, as well as fellowship trained in lower extremity and joint reconstruction. His expertise is broadly based on advanced training he has received from some of the country’s premier medical programs. Throughout his career, Dr. LaButti has worked hard to stay on the cutting edge of his specialty through rigorous

continuing education and research. But it is Dr. LaButti’s compassion and genuine concern for each and every one of his patients is what truly sets him apart. Conveniently located in the heart of Tulsa, Dr. LaButti treats patients in communities throughout Oklahoma including Bartlesville, Bixby, Bristow, Broken Arrow, Catoosa, Claremore, Collinsville, Durant, Enid, Fort Gibson, Glenpool, Grand Lake, Grove, Inola, Jenks, Kiefer, Lake Eufaula, McAlester, Muskogee, New Tulsa, Okmulgee, Osage, Owasso, Pryor, Sand Springs, Sapulpa, Stone Bluff, Turley and Vinita. “I would recommend Dr. LaButti to anyone,” said Roberta. EEthel Proctor 1920-2012

The former Claremore resident lived a full life of love, family, travel and adventure.

By Liz Rogers Ethel Proctor offered a smile and a kind word to everyone she met, whether she was in her home state of New York or her adopted home of Claremore. She was born in 1920 in New York City into a family of Hungarian bakers. Ethel’s family owned bakeries all over New York City, and she worked in a bakery most of her life. In 1947, Ethel married Walter James Proctor II, and they had four children: Walter III, Ellen, Linda and Randy. In 1956, Walter was killed in an auto accident. Ethel never

remarried, choosing to raise her four children solo. Ethel loved travel and adventure. She traveled to many countries in Europe and South America. She also enjoyed the simple things in life, and walking the beach in Florida was a favorite pastime. For ten years, Ethel resided in Rogers County with her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dennis Coons, owners of Country Inn Bed & Breakfast north of Claremore. During her years in Rogers County, Ethel donated her time to Safenet,

working in the thrift store, and cooking for Meals on Wheels. Ethel also volunteered, along with the family dog, Hank, for the Pilot Club of Claremore’s pet therapy program at the Veterans Center.

Nikki, Linda and Ethel on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Ethel at one of her favorite spots, the beach.

Linda Coons with her mother, Ethel Proctor.

At one point, she became a regular at the Claremore Super Recreation Center. Working out allowed her to build up her stamina for a three-week backpacking trip through Alaska with her grandson.

At 89, she went to Costa Rica. During her visit she climbed a volcanic mountain, walked through the wild nature reserves and slept in the clouds. Swimming in the ocean was a thrill for her. For her 91st birthday, she went to her birthplace, New York City, with her daughter, Linda, and granddaughter, Nikki, where she walked across the Brooklyn Bridge one last time and enjoyed a Broadway show. Most recently, Ethel lived in Syracuse, New York near her son, Walter, and daughter, Ellen. Ethel died December 6, 2012 due to complications from a brain tumor. Besides her children, she leaves behind six grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren, and numerous friends. Ethel experienced a life well lived and a life well loved. She will be missed.

BEN’S JOURNEY When Scott and Stephanie Greenland moved to Claremore after a medical incident changed the life of their son, Ben, they had no idea God was orchestrating the little details of their life right before their eyes. They had been living in the panhandle region when Ben was born. At six weeks old, Ben was diagnosed with a heart murmur, which led to heart surgery in Kansas City. While Ben was in recovery, he started having seizures that were unexplainable. The doctors determined after an MRI that he had a massive stroke that affected the left side of his brain. The Greenlands were told that Ben might not live and if he did, he would likely have severe lifelong disabilities. “I remember telling God if He is who He says He is, I need Him to show up BIG right now,” says Stephanie. “I opened my Bible up to the story of Lazarus being raised from the dead, and I specifically remember it saying this sickness will not end in death but in the glory of God. I knew then that God was showing up.”

Ben Greenland working with his therapist.

The Greenlands put their trust in God as they journeyed to Claremore to be closer to family, with no jobs or ideas as to what they would do next. Four months later, Scott took the Youth Pastor position with First Baptist Church. In doing so, he met Bret McGuire, co-owner of Summit, who told him all about the pediatric services offered right in their new hometown.

At 14 months old, Ben began therapy at Summit Pediatric Therapies. The location proved to be great since he received physical, occupational and speech therapy services several times a week. When Ben started at Summit, he was not walking, unable to hold a bottle, and his right arm was contracted with his hand in his mouth a lot. He could not open his right hand or grasp anything and was not talking. Today, Ben is five and attending Claremont Elementary Special Needs Class five days a week for a half day under the direction of Jennifer Esau. Thanks to his many therapists, Ben is walking, running, grasping things, drinking out of a straw, eating, and communicating. He receives pool therapy once a month with his therapist Terry Rairdon, COTA, and they work on range of motion and strengthening while in the water. Rairdon said that Ben can put his shoes and socks on independently and can hold a cup. Jennifer Swinney, a speech therapist, has worked with Ben on following directions, identifying objects, being able to express himself in longer sentences, articulating his words, colors and concepts, as well as learning to eat a variety of foods and textures. “I have seen a huge improvement in the area of feeding, which is a big deal because eating is such a social thing as well as sensory and oral motor skills,” says Swinney. Ben has had visual difficulties since the stroke. “He has been diagnosed with Cortical Vision Impairment, which basically means his brain doesn’t read what his eyes see,” states Stephanie. “It’s like pieces of his vision are missing. Summit Pediatric Therapies has been great about doing research and going the extra mile to learn all they can to treat Ben with the best therapies out there, especially with the vision side of it since it affects so many areas of his life.” Ben no longer has physical therapy but continues with occupational therapy and speech therapy. His big sister, Anna, has always played a crucial role in working with Ben throughout the day. “Whatever big sister can do, Ben wants to do,” states Stephanie. The Greenlands just welcomed their third child, Jackson Mark, into their lives on Jan. 11th. “The people at Summit show such compassion and concern on a weekly basis,” states Stephanie. “He’s not their kid, but they pour their energy and resources into our son and our family, and I’m so grateful.”
