“We wish we had made the move here sooner!” is what Managers Paul and Vicki Thielker will tell you they hear most often from new residents. It’s also very common to hear residents telling guests that moving to Silver Arrow Estates was “the best decision they ever made.” Silver Arrow Estates is situated on 17 acres of beautifully manicured grounds surrounded by an abundance of country charm. This Holiday Retirement community provides independent retirement living at its finest. “We’re nestled within the city of Broken Arrow where residents can find large city experiences – if they desire – or the small-town charm of downtown Broken Arrow. We are in an area off the beaten path and are surrounded by beautiful trees, plants and nature, providing a lovely peace,” said

Beth Ashcraft, Silver Arrow Estate’s community sales leader. With Silver Arrow’s free shuttle services, residents enjoy easy access to nearby shopping, medical facilities, dining, and

other attractions. Silver Arrow is close to local museums, a zoo, performing arts centers, sports events and much more. The community manager (continued on page 28)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

NOT YOUR VEGAS STOCK MARKET BOOKIE. BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

“The market hit all time highs again!” exclaims every media source ever over the last month. “We’ve been here before, remember?” I reply with a middleAmerica voice of reason! All the risk that existed then…still exists now. Sometimes dealing with the emotions that the stock market elicits from folks is the most challenging part of my job. GREED and FEAR run the markets! When I hear people starting to talk crazy about wanting unreasonable returns and about thinking of buying “willynilly” stocks, I know we are in the GREED phase of the market. It is at this phase, I am certain, that we need to be cautious about a downturn. It reminds me of something I heard Warren Buffet say: “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.” What do you think the market will do? It’s at all time highs! Do you think it

will go down from here? That, my friends, is the 50 million dollar question. What I can tell you is that last time we were here, it dropped by 40%. So, what’s a guy supposed to do? Dance the Chicken Dance or ride the Big Sexy Roller Coaster? Well, perhaps a little of both. You must remember that this is not a gigantic game of “Texas Hold ‘Em”! You are not required to be “all in” or “all out.” There is more than one strategy that can be used to win the game. I prefer the “Steady Eddy” wins the race approach to investing. It

may be a bit on the boring side but I’m way over the Big Sexy Roller Coaster and I would prefer to err on the side of caution. When our clients hire us to be their financial advisor, they are hiring us to be their risk manager, not their Vegas Stock Market Bookie. Our goal is to manage the risk and make money as we can. Always remember, “If you preserve capital, you will always have another opportunity for growth.” To adopt a Steady Eddy approach you have to have a clear understanding of where you are (what you own), and where you want to go (what you want your investments to do). It requires planning, patience, and perseverance. It demands staying focused on the goal while filtering out all the media noise and the voices in your head. If you could use some help figuring out what to do with your investments, give us a call at 918-272-1120.

YYou Can Count on Granite Granite countertops completely transform rooms and are more affordable than you may think. By Lorrie Ward The term “flipping” has become popular in the real estate world in the past decade; in fact, there are even several television shows dedicated to the subject. To “flip” a house, a buyer purchases at a low cost a home in need of updating, finds the best and least expensive ways to do the updating and needed repairs, and then sells the home at a profit. Rex Marsh, owner of Harmony Star Marble, reports that he has seen a lot of flipping going on as the economy seems to be making an upward turn. He has often been called on to make kitchens and baths look like new by installing granite or marble countertops and surrounds, not only for those who are in the real estate market, but for those who just want to give their homes a fresh, new appearance. “Granite especially gives the room a whole new, updated look,” says Rex. “Most new kitchens have granite countertops, and baths have granite counters and showers with cultured marble or manufactured stone.” Harmony Star Marble is Claremore’s only natural granite company.

Rex reports that clients have shifted from granite-looking products to actual granite because the cost of true granite has gone down significantly in recent years and is no more expensive than its manmade

counterpart. Granite is one of the hardest, most durable surfaces on the earth, and its reputation has grown as people have looked past the rumors of high upkeep, which Rex points out couldn’t be further from the

ROGERS COUNTY

truth. “People used to believe that true granite is hard to clean,” says Rex. “But it’s truly easy – wash down with warm soap and water, rinse with clear water, and you’re done.” Along with granite in kitchens, Rex has been installing many Blanco Siligranit sinks, also easy to clean. Blanco Siligranit sinks are made of a material consisting of 80 percent natural granite stone, which has been chemically polymerized with resin, creating a naturally hard, non-porous material that is resistant to chipping, scratching and staining, and is highly heatresistant (up to 536 ° F) – all of which make the Blanco Siligranit

Page 5

sink a perfect companion to a granite countertop. “We perform a lot of ‘turnkey’ operations,” says Rex, who explains that ‘turnkey’ means that he takes care of all the details surrounding the countertop installation and arranges for any plumber or electrician, if needed. “This way the client doesn’t have to worry about these things,” says Rex, who points out that being in business in this area for 30 years has enabled him to have good relationships with quality contractors. Rex reports that most kitchen and bath jobs can be completed in one to two days. With granite and marble, style does not have to be sacrificed for durability, and Harmony Star Marble offers a huge selection of color choices to fit any décor. “If we don’t have something on our lot here, we have warehouses in Tulsa and Broken Arrow,” says Rex. So if you are ready to give your home a fresh new look at an affordable price, visit the Harmony Star Marble showroom or call for your consultation and estimate today.

Rev Up Your Savings It’s lake time! Consider refinancing your boat (or automobile, motorcycle or RV) with RCB Bank.

By Jocelyn Wood Refinancing your vehicle loan (for a land or water cruiser) could save you money. With summer loan promotions like RCB Bank’s 1.91% APR* on new, used and refinanced vehicles, now is a good time to review your current loan, or consider buying that new vessel you’ve been eyeing. Refinancing is not right for everyone, but it’s wise to know your options. RCB Bank Loan

Officers Barbara Renfrow and Roger Evans answer some frequently asked questions about auto refinances. What is an auto refinance? An auto refinance (or boat, RV or even an ATV) is when a customer is provided new financing for their loan in order to lower the loan interest rate or monthly payment. How does a refinance help me?

Let’s say you bought a car and borrowed $20,000 at 2.99% APR for five years. Your monthly payments are $359.30. If you financed that same loan with RCB Bank at its 1.91% APR*, your monthly payments would be $349.78, saving you $571.20 over the life of the loan. When should I consider refinancing? Are you interested in

www.ValueNews.com lowering your monthly payments or shortening the term of your loan? Maybe you want to consolidate debt at a lower rate of interest? These are all reasons to consider refinancing. The best advice is to visit face to face with a lender. See what they offer and compare that to what you have and what you are trying to achieve. You can stop by any RCB Bank branch to talk to a lender at no obligation. How is a bank loan different from a dealership or independent lender? Most dealers sell their car loans to big out-of-state lenders. Not all, but most. Also, note that dealers will typically charge additional fees. At RCB Bank, our rates and fees are very competitive and, for used cars, are often lower. We also maintain your loan locally and provide personal customer service to you and your family for the duration of your loan, not just when you sign loan papers. I just bought a vehicle from the dealership at a higher interest rate. How soon can I refinance? If you have the valid title for your vehicle, you can apply for a refinance at any time. If you just bought a vehicle, you may have to wait until the perfected title comes back before you can apply. What documents will I need to get started with the loan application? You will need a signed loan application and a copy of your current paystubs, a valid driver’s license, your insurance verification and the title of the vehicle. Additional documents

may be requested. Ready to start saving? RCB Bank is currently offering great rates on new or used vehicles, and refinances. We’re offering 1.91% APR* for 2006-2013 vehicles, boats or RVs and 2.609% APR for 2004-2005 models. Loans can be used to buy a new or used vehicle, refinance an existing loan from another lender, pay off credit cards or fund a home improvement project as long as the loan is tied to a titled vehicle. Download our loan application at www.RCBbank.com. You can also stop by any RCB Bank branch to talk to a lender or call 855-BANK-RCB. Barbara and Roger welcome you to stop by the Claremore RCB Bank Financial Center, located at the corner of Will Rogers and Lynn Riggs, to speak to them in person. *Annual Percentage Rate (APR) as of 4/15/2013, and includes a 3% discount for automatic debit of monthly payment from an RCB Bank checking or savings account. Rate could increase if automatic debit is cancelled at any time during the term of the loan. APR is based on a term of 60 months and $50.00 document preparation fee. Requires credit score of 650 or above. Limited offer with approved credit for loans secured by titled vehicles. Financing available for 100% purchase price (new) or 105% NADA trade-in (used) 2013 – 2006 models. Refinance of current RCB Bank obligation may not qualify. Other restrictions may apply. Member FDIC. PProtect Your Identity RCI Insurance Group will host a free Community Paper Shredding Event on Saturday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to noon. By Sheryl Sowell RCI Insurance Group in Claremore will host a free Community Paper Shredding Event on Saturday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to noon. Now more than ever, it is important to protect your identity by making sure all paperwork with any sensitive personal information is destroyed. “Approximately 9 million Americans have their identity stolen each year, and tax season is always the worst,” says Donna Vierheller of RCI

Insurance. To help protect your identity, bring your junk mail, paper clutter and old tax records to the RCI Insurance parking lot, across the street from the Claremore Post Office, at 621 N. Cherokee in Claremore. Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personally identifying information, such as your name, Social Security number, or credit card number, without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes.

Mick Cottom, president of RCI Insurance Group

Get your junk mail and personal documents shredded at RCI’s Community Paper Shredding Event.

“Identity theft is a serious problem. It takes an average of 175 hours and a cost of $1,100 to correct a case of identity theft,” says Donna. Consumers victimized by identity theft may also lose out on job opportunities or be denied bank loans because of negative information on their credit reports. It is even possible to be arrested for crimes committed by someone who stole your

identity. The amount of stress and damages caused can be significant. Identity theft cases tend to peak during tax-filing season. Out of every 130 people who file taxes, two typically suffer from identity fraud that gets discovered when they attempt to file their returns and find that someone already has. In fact, the IRS placed identity theft at the top of its “dirty dozen” list of

tax scams this year and has 3,000 employees working on such cases. Shred your documents! Stop by RCI Insurance on May 4 from 9 a.m. to noon for their free Community Paper Shredding Event. Green Country Shredding & Recycling will be on hand to shred your old tax documents, junk mail and paper clutter for free. Richest Noodling Showdown Comes to Claremore The Battle of the Big Cats noodling competition takes place June 13-15, 2013.

By Tanya Andrews Claremore is known for its many Oklahoma legends. Legends like Will Rogers, Patti Page, Lynn Riggs and “Oklahoma!”, Andy Payne, Stuart Roosa, and J.M. Davis all bring fame to Claremore and visitors from around the world. Cowboys, Grammy Award winners, astronauts, and gun collectors, now champion noodler? Kaleb Summers, Claremore native, and team STOadventures, won the 2012 OKIE Noodling Tournament in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. He has worn many hats in his young life, including graduate of Oklahoma State University, boxer, steer wrestler, hunting and fishing guide, and part of the blasting team in his family’s construction business, so adding noodler to his resume comes naturally. Possibly a like-character to Will Rogers, only his tricks are with flathead catfish and not with ropes, Kaleb’s home is the outdoors of northeastern Oklahoma. His noodling experience started in southeast Oklahoma when a friend took him fishing and he soon learned how to decipher between fish holes and beaver holes, while studying the tricks to find the flatheads. Wikipedia defines noodling as fishing for catfish using only

bare hands, practiced primarily in the southern United States. A noodler places his hand inside a discovered catfish hole. Other sources, such as urbandictionary.com, describe it as a crazy person using their fingers as bait to catch a catfish. Kaleb is not “crazy” but is an avid hunter and fisherman whose life has revolved around the preservation of a fading lifestyle that once used to be the norm. “To release a trophy fish reveals a rather strong kind of character, for as sportsmen, we sometimes owe it to our quarry to live to fight another day. After all, the true thrill lies solely in the fight underwater,” says Kaleb. It was a big fight in June of 2012 when Kaleb and his team fought a flathead weighing over 70 pounds (70.46 to be exact) and won the tournament. Their winning fish was the largest on record for the 14-year event. Kaleb and STOadventures, along with Visit Claremore, Claremore Expo Center, NABATAK OUTDOORS, K95 and Fox 23, Summers Drilling & Blasting, Value News, Osage Casino, GRDA, Melton’s Sales, Pixley Lumber Company, Warren Cat, Reasors, Wild Country Meats, and BancFirst will host the

“Battle of the Big Cats…Route 66’s Richest Noodling Showdown” coming June 13-15. A total of $10,000 in cash in prizes will be awarded, with $5,000 going to the contestant/team with the “BIG” fish. Contestants must be entered by Wednesday, June 12 at noon. They can then check-in to start scouting and fishing at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 and go until weigh-in on Saturday at 6 p.m. Contestants must be in the weigh-in line at the Claremore Expo Center by 6 p.m. and report to event staff, or be disqualified. Entry fees are $50 per person and are available online at www.stoadventures.net, www.visitclaremore.org, or in person at NABATAK OUTDOORS or the Claremore Expo Center. Contestants can fish any lake, such as Grand Lake or Hudson, or any river they wish to. Winners will be announced at 6:30 p.m. and entertainment will continue afterward for the crowds to enjoy. The public is invited to come out to the Expo on Friday and enjoy a fish fry, live entertainment, and a variety of vendors at the Claremore Expo Center. The tradeshow will open at noon and

Champion Noodler Kaleb Summers. the fish fry and entertainment will start around 6 p.m. Throughout Friday and Saturday, Kaleb will show his skills in several noodling exhibitions in a 3,000gallon tank. Spectators and fans will enjoy entertainment provided by A Bar Bunkhouse Band and other performers to be named. Music, tradeshow, exhibitions, and being present for the contestants’ check-ins is all free to the public! “Visit Claremore is elated to work with Kaleb and the various partners to bring this great event to our hometown,” says Tanya Andrews, executive director. “Claremore is proud to have one of our own want to share their experience and bring a competition here. Kaleb sees that

an event of this nature will bring visitors, competitors, and residents from Oklahoma and the region, and he is excited about showcasing his hometown. He is a great ambassador of Claremore and of Oklahoma!” A full event schedule, information, contestant entry forms, and tradeshow vendor registrations are available for the Battle of the Big Cats at www.stoadventures.net or www.visitclaremore.org, or by calling (918) 341-8688.

Honoring Loved Ones with Dignity Rice Funeral Service has been serving Rogers County and surrounding areas since 1945.

By Cassie Woods For those who are left behind, a funeral provides an opportunity to celebrate the life and accomplishments of a loved one -- a chance to say goodbye. The ceremony often becomes the focal point from which the healing process can begin. Rice Funeral Service in Claremore has been providing that opportunity to families of Rogers County for nearly 70 years. Rice Funeral Service was established in 1945 by Thornton “T.G.” and Opal Rice. Several years later, the business changed ownership and eventually Kathy Dopp became the sole owner and funeral director in charge. In 1995, under Dopp’s direction, Rice Funeral Service expanded and relocated the funeral home to the 7,500-square-foot facility at 631 E. Will Rogers Blvd. Dopp’s vision for the facility is for it to be “a place for the community to come and be comfortable and be served.” That legacy of service to the community and commitment to excellence is carried out by every staff member. “Because we recognize the trust that families place in their funeral home choice, the

heritage and tradition of Rice Funeral Service is very important to me,” said Dopp. “That’s why we strive to staff the funeral home with a dedicated and compassionate team of people who believe providing funeral service is both a responsibility and a privilege.” In addition to Dopp, the seven-person staff includes Managing Director Kenny DeLozier, who oversees the dayto-day operations of the funeral home, DeLozier’s daughter Haley, who serves as funeral assistant, Funeral Director Allen McElwain, Funeral Director and Embalmer Jason Rouk, Public Relations Director and Prearrangement Advisor Gina Wilson and Prearrangement Advisor Chandra Krafft. Kenny DeLozier is a Claremore native who joined Rice in 2008 after having operated his own businesses for many years. He holds a bachelor of science degree in business management from Northeastern State University and also graduated from Amarillo College’s Mortuary Science Program last June. DeLozier carries out Dopp’s vision for

service every day. “My favorite part of the job is helping the families we serve. I really see it as a ministry,” DeLozier said. “I feel that way because after their

ROGERS COUNTY

loss, we’re the very first people they see. We’re also the last people with them after the services are completed. We’re with them through the whole process, caring for each family as if they were our own.” Haley DeLozier became a part of the Rice Funeral Service staff in March of 2010. She is a 2009 graduate of Chelsea High School and a recent graduate from the same Amarillo College program as her father. She is also 30 hours away from earning her funeral director and embalmer licenses.

Page 9

Funeral Director Allen McElwain is also originally from Claremore and began working at Rice in 1999, while attending the University of Central Oklahoma full time. He received his bachelor of science degree in funeral service in 2001. Jason Rouk graduated from the Dallas Institute of Funeral Science before becoming a licensed funeral director and embalmer. He also holds a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University and was a certified golf course superintendent for 18 years. Gina Wilson has been a part of the Claremore community for 32 years, but is the newest addition to the Rice Funeral Service staff. Prior to serving as the funeral home’s director of public relations she worked in the financial industry for 26 years. Chandra Krafft came to Rice in June of 2012 after spending 10 years working in the insurance and financial industry. She is a graduate of Oklahoma State University. Rice Funeral Service has a long legacy of providing highquality service to the community. The entire staff pledges to continue to honor loved ones with dignity and respect.

AAll Gave Some and Some Gave All The Oklahoma Military Academy Alumni Reunion will hold two special events June 7 and 8. By Lorrie Ward “All Gave Some and Some Gave All.” This is the theme of the Oklahoma Military Academy Alumni Reunion on June 7-8 at Rogers State University, and the public is invited to participate in two of this year’s events: the Oklahoma Military Academy Reunion Golf Classic on June 7 and the OMA Reunion Opening Ceremonies on June 8. The Reunion will kick off on Friday with the 2013 Oklahoma Military Academy Alumni Reunion Golf Classic at

Claremore’s Heritage Hills Golf Course. The cost to participate is $60 per person, and unlimited mulligans are available for those who wish to purchase them. The OMA Alumni Association is also calling for Golf Hole Sponsors. Cost of sponsorship is $100 per hole, and sponsored holes will be marked with a sign displaying the sponsoring business’s or individual’s name, which will also be featured in the OMA Reunion Program. Interested parties may contact

Dr. Danette Boyle, OMA Alumni Executive Director, at dboyle@rsu.edu or (918) 343-6888. This year the OMA Alumni will honor all alumni who served in the military during the opening ceremonies on Saturday, June 8. This will be open to the public as well. The ceremony will start at 9:30 a.m. at the OMA Killed in Action Memorial, between Preparatory Hall and Meyer Hall on the RSU campus, with opening remarks by this

year’s reunion adjutant, Ken Colley, OMA Alumni, Class of 1969. The Claremore High School Navy ROTC will raise the flag and patriotic music will be played to honor those who served in the U.S. military, commemorating the fact that “All Gave Some and Some Gave All” in a ceremony that never fails to inspire and touch the hearts of those who observe it. Oklahoma Military Academy was the predecessor to Rogers State University and occupied its place on College Hill for over 52 years. Once known as “The West Point of the Southwest,” the Academy graduated both high school and junior college students, many of whom went on to have highly successful careers in the military, civic, and civilian realms. Over the past few years, there has been a highly concentrated effort to locate and connect with OMA alumni, and the results have been phenomenal. Many of these alumni have taken an active interest in the growth and prosperity of Rogers State University. Many have established scholarship endowments, and OMA alumni have offered strong financial support for the

new RSU Student Dining Center, currently under construction on the west end of the Claremore campus. OMA alumni come from all over the United States to attend the reunion, and Dr. Boyle has been privileged to watch this event grow every year. She describes the reunion as important in preserving the history of OMA, Rogers State University, Rogers County and the military. “Thanks to the efforts of alumni who are committed to finding former OMA cadets, we continue to hear from newly found OMA alumni each week in our office,” she says. “This year’s reunion promises to be more extraordinary than ever before.” Be sure to visit the OMA Museum, open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Meyer Hall on the RSU campus, 1701 W. Will Rogers Blvd.

Where Friends and Family Connect Enjoy great food and atmosphere during Friday evening dinner at The Pink House.

By Carol Beck-Round Walk through the doors of the Victorian-era house and you’ll see pink everywhere. While many men might be turned off by the restaurant name and the color, once they taste the made-from-scratch food, they return to the Claremore landmark known as The Pink House. “The pink doesn’t bother them once they’ve tasted the food,” laughs owner Margo Stewart. The Pink House presents dinner on Friday nights from 5 to 8 p.m. “We offer three specials, along with the regular lunch menu,” says Margo. “Rib-eye steaks are always available along with two other specials each week. In the past, we’ve offered meatloaf as well as a pork loin with a specialty barbeque sauce.” When Margo bought The Pink House restaurant and tearoom in 2007, she knew she had big shoes to fill. Opened in 1982, the business has become a northeastern Oklahoma destination for those who love not only the tasty food, but also the cozy atmosphere. “My passion was to create a place for friends and families to connect over great food and a wonderful pot of

tea,” she says. However, it was an Emilie Barnes book, “If Teacups Could Talk: Sharing a Cup of Kindness with Treasured Friends,” that sparked Margo’s

desire to have a tearoom. “I loved the book about Emilie’s mother teaching her how to make tea and scones,” she says. Originally, Margo wanted to

purchase a tearoom. However, she knew that a tearoom by itself wouldn’t make it. At the time, she was in charge of human resources at a large Tulsa church. Her search for a restaurant/tearoom led her to the Claremore business housed inside the threestory home built circa 1902. Well-known for its tasty cuisine, The Pink House offers two hot specialty casseroles, four quiches, chicken salad and other sandwiches, fresh crisp salads, wraps, homemade soups and made-from-scratch desserts, including baked fudge. Margo says you can find many recipes for baked fudge on the Internet, but The Pink House baked fudge is unique. “It’s made with our loving care,” she adds with a smile. Loving care goes into each dish as well as the variety of teas offered on the menu at this fun, unique restaurant. “We are always trying new dishes and desserts,” says Margo. “For example, people come in and ask for our Key Lime Cake, a recipe from Trisha Yearwood’s cookbook. If it’s not on the menu that day, we tell them to give us 24-hour notice and we’ll have it ready when they come in the next day.” All of the delicious food is prepared on-site. “Nothing is pre-packaged. I think our fresh food and customer care sets us apart from others. My mission is to take care of customers.” Margo is also passionate about getting more people to drink tea. In the tradition of what is known as “tea time,” The

Page 11

Pink House’s “High Tea” centers around the serving of freshly brewed tea. Guests can choose from over 50 loose-leaf teas. Because Margo believes that the tradition should be passed down through the generations, The Pink House offers Little Girl Tea Parties and Tween Parties as well as mother/daughter teas, high school senior teas, church group tea parties, and teas to celebrate showers. Tea parties, customized to meet the desires of the guests, are two-hour events beginning at 2 p.m. and feature soup, savories like finger sandwiches, miniquiche, two kinds of scones, and dessert, if requested. “High Tea” is only offered by reservation. Since purchasing the business, Margo has added catering to their services. Shari Beguin, catering director, says, “We specialize in catering business breakfasts and lunches, boxed lunches and buffet or formal style spreads. We’ve catered weddings, showers, birthday parties, anniversary events and retirement parties.” The Pink House is open for lunch Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and for dinner on Fridays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. For more information about the restaurant or to schedule catering or a High Tea, check out their website at www.pinkhouseofclaremore.com. SSomething Bugging You? Bug Force sells products that are tested and proven to keep bed bugs (and others) from biting. By Duane Blankenship Bug Force owner Darryl Grimm sells Greenway Formula 7 products at a Tulsa business location and online. The Greenway Formula 7 product line was developed by a native Oklahoman and is a formulated all-natural spray that is safe for the environment, with no harmful chemicals added. “Formula 7 was originally developed and tested to be 100 percent effective in killing bed bug eggs, larvae and small bed bugs within 24 hours and teen and adult bed bugs within 48 hours,” said Grimm. “The product was tested by the OSU Entomology Department.” Personal experiences have shown Formula 7 to be effective on other insects as well. Five basic products are available for both commercial and consumer use. They are sold at Tail Waggers Pet Supplies in the Fontana Shopping Center at 51st and Memorial in Tulsa. You will find additional information and may also make purchases online at www.bugforce.biz. “New customers often ask if Formula 7 is FDA and EPA approved,” said Grimm. “Each

product was lab tested and proven to be all-natural. They contain no chemicals or pesticides and are exempt from FDA and EPA registration. The agencies said there was no need for testing because they contain nothing harmful to the environment and are EPA Title 25b Exempt Registered by Oklahoma Department of Agriculture.” The original product was Greenway Formula 7 Bed Bug Solution. It’s an all-natural bed bug spray that has been proven to be 100 percent effective in killing bed bugs. Multiple container sizes, including a 3.3-ounce size that is easy to carry along whenever you travel, are available. Formula 7 Tick and Flea Spray ensures peace of mind when you spray a pet because it has no harmful chemicals and it kills fleas and ticks. “The application process is very easy and doesn’t require much product,” says Grimm. “It is very cost effective – only about $2 a month to treat your dog or cat – compared to products containing harmful chemicals. Once

applied, the product lasts about 14 days unless your pet is bathed or groomed.” The Household Formula 7 Spray is an ideal solution for homeowners, property owners and management personnel for common pest control. It has a 30-day residual effect that kills and repels insects. It has been field tested by customers and has been effective in killing spiders, ants, crickets, wasps and scorpions. These are not claims by Daryl Grimm, Bug Force, or the manufacturer. It is information noted and received from customers as they have used Greenway Formula 7 products. Greenway Formula 7 Rancher has proven effective in keeping flies and other insects off horses, cows and goats. It, too, is cost effective when compared to competitive products. Last in the lineup is a personal product, Formula 7 Bug Repellent. “I think it’s good advice to avoid the possible side effects of repellents containing diethyltoluamide (DEET),” said Grimm. “They are chemical pesticides.” He recommends that you “go green” with the Formula

Find that Special Something Unique gift items for all occasions can be found at Surceé Home Décor & Gifts.

By Susan Erler April showers bring May flowers, but the month of May also brings many special occasions, each a gift-giving opportunity for loved ones and close friends. And of course, you want to give a gift that shows them your heartfelt sentiments. That’s a lot of pressure. But for those who have discovered Surceé Home Décor & Gifts in Owasso, gift giving is easy, and you can be confident that everything you give will be distinctive and unique. Owner Laura Sanders prides herself on locating a wide variety of items everyone would be thrilled to receive, while keeping her customers’ budgets in mind too. “I have amazing gifts for Mother’s Day, graduation, baby showers and weddings, all priced under $25,” she says. “Most have multiple people on their gift lists, so by shopping Surceé they can find one-of-a-kind items all reasonably priced.” Surceé has some terrific options for graduations, including monogrammed bath wraps, luggage, storage bins to help organize tiny dorm rooms, and keepsake items engraved and personalized for the new graduate.

Susan Hanchette, long-time employee of Surceé. Brighton is offering an exceptional deal just in time for Mother’s Day. Called “Ears to You,” this amazing offer can certainly help everyone stretch their gift-giving dollars. Simply purchase any Brighton necklace and bracelet from April 26-May 12 and you will receive free your choice of Brighton earrings. That’s a deal that’s hard to beat. Recently the A&M Flower Stand opened its new location in front of Surceé in the parking lot of Tyann Plaza. For those who have become loyal customers of

A&M, you might remember their old location in front of Reasor’s on 86th Street North. But this year they have moved north and Laura is thrilled. “We are very excited to have them as part of our location.” Laura is also excited about several fun activities going on at her store during the month of May. The first is May 4, when her annual Sidewalk Sale will coincide with the Owasso Bouquet of Gardeners Spring Festival. The festival features a huge variety of garden

Fiesta Night is set for May 6, and it is no accident that this celebration falls on the same night as the grand opening of Los Cabos, the restaurant now occupying the space that was formerly Delta Café. “We know customers will face long wait times at Los Cabos on that first night,” says Laura. “We invite them to walk down to our store, where we are serving chips and salsa and margaritas, while we heat things up with some sizzling specials of our own.” Laura has owned Surceé for the past six years, while the store itself has been an Owasso mainstay for almost 10. She attributes her loyal customer base to her friendly and knowledgeable staff, most who have been with her for years. Susan Hanchette is a long-time member of the Surceé family. “I get the opportunity to help our customers with so many major events in their lives,” says Susan. “We have the perfect items to decorate their new home or for them to give at a baby shower – amazing items that they can be proud to pass on to someone. I love that I get to help people find the perfect item for all their major life events.” Surceé has an impressive collection of bracelets and necklaces that can all be monogrammed and personalized, and a huge collection of custom charms. “We have expanded our store to include many items that you might not expect to find at a gift shop,” explains Laura. “We

have beautiful wedding gifts, decorating and cook books, outdoor entertaining items, home décor, furniture and an extensive line of bubble bath, lotions, candles and perfumes.” One baby gift item that Laura cannot seem to keep in stock are called “Chew Beads.” These are stylish silicone “teething” jewelry designed for the new mom to look stylish while allowing her baby to do what comes naturally, chew on mom’s jewelry. “These make fun and functional baby gifts, and they have been incredibly difficult to keep on the shelves!” A new line added to the Surceé lineup is retro Tulsa gift items including Tulsa dish towels, coffee mugs and many other hostess gifts all designed around iconic Tulsa landmarks. “We already offer Oklahoma gift items and they have been incredibly popular,” Laura states. “I can’t wait to see how this new line is received.” Store hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Sunday. Fitness on the Green Fowler Toyota of Tulsa is sponsoring free daily fitness classes during the month of May at Guthrie Green.

By Duane Blankenship partnered with the Downtown YMCA to offer free fitness classes on Guthrie Green each day, Monday through Saturday, during the month of May. Classes will be geared towards downtown Tulsa’s professionals and their families, and everyone is welcome to attend. Jonathan Fowler, vice president of operations for

If you are not familiar with Guthrie Green, here’s a great opportunity to get acquainted. Guthrie Green is an urban garden and performance space in the heart of the Brady Arts District in downtown Tulsa. It provides a unique space for Tulsans to congregate, shop and enjoy downtown’s newest urban park. Fowler Toyota of Tulsa has

Fowler Holding Company/Corporate Headquarters, and Ken Wilkins, general manager of Fowler Toyota of Tulsa, are excited about Fowler’s sponsorship participation of Fitness on the Green. “Fowler has a strong philosophy of giving back to the communities in which we serve,” Jonathan said, “and we love

being involved in the arts, culture, health and fitness.” Ken added, “These are the areas in which we want to maintain the focus of Fowler Toyota of Tulsa as we continue serving our community.” When Fowler and Wilkins first met with project cosponsors, they immediately realized that Fowler had the desire and resources to sponsor Fitness on the Green for the entire month of May. You may not choose to attend each daily class, but you certainly have that option to broaden your exercise experience. A variety of fitness and health-geared events will be conducted by professional area fitness instructors, and each class will be held for one hour. Although the Monday through Friday classes are mostly for adults, there will be a class called “Mommy & Me” each Saturday of the month for moms and their children. This class will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Gift items will be distributed to participants every day, and you may learn more about Fitness on the Green by visiting the website, www.guthriegreen.com/ fitness-green. Boot Camp will be offered twice each week, Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 p.m. It is a one-hour class that provides a complete total body workout to help you get in shape or challenge your body to reach its fullest potential. You will experience intervals of power walking or jogging and spurts of cardio endurance, athletic drills, kickboxing and strength training.

Page 17

With the incorporation of high and low intensity intervals of exercise, your body is able to maximize its caloric burn as it enters the fat-burning zone. Other classes will include Tai Chi, Family Yoga, Fitness Walking, and Mommy & Me each Saturday morning. The Family Yoga class is held each Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. and a special Yoga class will be presented by lululemon each Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Friday Fitness Walking class will take a different route each week to expose participants to the history of downtown Tulsa. They will experience a synergism through the group class environment and will, hopefully, find ongoing support, motivation and inspiration to continue their walking experience for health and weight loss. Beginners and experienced walkers will feel comfortable during the workout and will enjoy the historic sites of downtown Tulsa. Fowler Toyota of Tulsa is proud to be a sponsor of Fitness on the Green. In doing so, they are providing an incredible opportunity for you and your family, whatever your fitness level. Be sure to watch for other Fowler sponsored events throughout the year.

with celebrations. If you’re planning a graduation party, baby or bridal shower, or any other big event at your home, Lawns By Nature can do a complete cleanup of your yard. Call as soon as possible to schedule your event. Andrew has been doing landscaping since he was 12 years old. His company’s goal is to continuously raise the bar on

They offer commercial mowing services, leaf removal, debris hauling, and tree trimming, pruning and removal. They also do retaining walls, boulderscape, hardscape, concrete sidewalks, porches and driveways, French drains, and sprinkler repair. Lawns By Nature services both commercial and residential properties, and they work by the job, by the visit, or with a yearly contract. “We work with homeowner and property owner associations, large and small apartments, and we love to work with churches,” adds Andrew. Maybe you’re unsure about hiring a landscape company because you think you can’t afford it. “Give us a call. Don’t assume that because our services are so diversified that we’re not competitively priced. We’re eager to earn your business,” says Andrew. For more information, contact

Honoring Legacy by Continuing Tradition The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club hosts its annual Old Fashioned Picnic on Saturday, May 18 at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch in Oologah.

By Susan Erler Many traditions come and go these days. In fact, traditions seem to last only a short time before they fall to the wayside due to lack of interest or lack of support. One local organization is the exception to this rule. Founded in 1899, the Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club is continuing with one of their most cherished traditions. The group was originally founded as a club focused on creating social activities for local females desiring to get together while they were on summer break from seminary. Actually, men and women were invited to these gatherings, and Will Rogers was even a member of the club. The group has historical writings

documenting the many picnics and other social activities enjoyed by them. Even though decades have passed, the initial premise remains basically the same: bring people together in an atmosphere of food, fun and family and raise awareness of the traditions enjoyed by the Cherokee people. The group has over 150 members from all across the United States, with 40 of them over the age of 80. This year, the Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club will be hosting an their annual Old Fashioned Picnic at Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch located on the shores of Lake Oologah, one mile north of Oologah and two miles east of Highway 169 (9501

E. 380 Rd.). The picnic is set for Saturday, May 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This will be the seventh year that they have held the picnic at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch. Ollie Starr is past president of the group and is excited to invite everyone to join them for a day filled with “traditional hog fry” food cooked over an open fire in black kettles, live music, and traditional Cherokee games and storytelling. The entire event will be topped off with several desserts sure to please your palate. Members of the club will be wearing traditional Cherokee dresses. A hog fry typically consists of cubes of hog meat cooked in its own juices, beans, fried potato wedges, fry bread, and shortcake or cobblers. “No one will leave here hungry,” laughs Ollie. “We can guarantee that!” Cost for the picnic is simply a donation to the cause. Registration for blue card memberships will be done that day too, and Chief Bill John Baker will be in attendance as well. A live and a silent auction will be a part of the day’s fun. Monies

Pocahontas Club President Debra West in a traditional Cherokee tear dress. raised by the group will go towards their scholarship program. Graduating seniors from all surrounding schools are encouraged to apply for one of the ten $600 scholarships they offer on a yearly basis. Debra West, president of the Pocahontas Club, is extremely proud of the work that they do encouraging young women to follow their dream of education. “We offer these scholarships each year to local students, and we are one of the few that gives the money directly to the student, not to the college,” she explains. “This allows them to use the money for transportation costs or books or whatever their need is.” Applications will be

available at the picnic or you can contact Ruth Ann Weaver at (918) 535-2683 and she will be happy to send one to you. The scholarship applications will be considered on a first come, first served basis for full-time students. This amazing group has events scheduled throughout the entire year. with great gifts for Mother’s Day and other occasions, Nesting Necessities offers unique garden items, fun summer cups, beach towels and Skimpy low-calorie drink mixes. Customizable items available at the store include steel and wood monograms, which make great wedding gifts. Other personalized offerings include Harley & Maude’s Jewelry – great for gift giving. Recently, the business added the Gypsy Bliss line with fun jewelry and leather cuffs. Rusted Rabbit Resale, located at 405 W. Will Rogers Blvd., is next door to Nesting Necessities. Owners Wade and Sally Faust bring customers interesting furniture and accent pieces that are purposeful as well as unusual. “Rusted Rabbit is about many things,” says Wade. “We love repurposing things, but we also love to help other people find the purpose in a piece they already own or have recently purchased.” The owners also appreciate pieces with antique beauty and enjoy placing a beautiful old piece in someone's décor. “We travel to many different states to locate things

that may be local and common to other places but maybe not so often seen here. We have discovered lately that many folks are downsizing. We’ve been able to help several families market their estate in a way that maximizes the value, while limiting or eliminating the labor involved. The bottom line is that we love to work with people!” Located just down the block is Savannah’s Boutique, 514 W. Will Rogers Blvd. Filled with a wonderful selection of hot new fashions, accessories, gifts and skin care products, Savannah’s offers shoppers a variety of merchandise. Owner Savannah Rentie says she strives to keep her prices as low as possible so “you can enjoy your shopping experience to the fullest.” If all that shopping makes you hungry, you can help Perry Dogs celebrate their one-year anniversary in downtown Claremore. Located at 103 N. Cherokee, Perry Dogs is owned by Perry and Pamela Stafford. According to Perry, “People describe our hot dogs as the ‘best hot dog ever.’” Perry Dogs will also cater events such as

Perry Dogs also has two Facebook pages: “Perry Dogs” for cart and food truck schedules and “Perry Dogs Café,” for café specials and downtown events. If you have a hankering for a hamburger, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better place than Boomarang Diner at 304 W. Will Rogers Blvd. The food is 100 percent fresh and the service is genuine. “We wanted to offer the best old-fashioned burger in town,” says manager Rick Willaby. In addition to halfprice hamburgers on Mondays and all-you-can-eat catfish every Friday for $9.99, the restaurant offers hand-breaded chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, chicken chunks and root beer floats. Top Rodeo Competitors on Board The Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo welcomes a new stock contractor and top quality animals.

By Carol Beck-Round The Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo has always been a popular venue for cowboys and cowgirls on their way to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas each year. However, with a change in stock contractors this year, it’s about to get more competitive. “We’re bringing in Carr Pro Rodeo as our stock contractor and producer,” says David Petty, Will Rogers Stampede committee chair. “Pete Carr has some of the best animals going in rodeo, and he and his crew put on a great show. Fans who have been regulars to our rodeo for decades are going to be very impressed by what they see this year.” Dallas-based Carr Pro Rodeo, one of the premier stock contracting firms in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, is well known for having the top stock in the sport. Just last season, the top bareback riders in the game selected Carr’s MGM Deuces Night as the top bucking horse in the game, and Carr’s Dirty Jacket placed third in the voting for Bareback Horse of the Year. The 67th edition of the Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo will kick off at 7:45 p.m. Friday, May 24 and run through

Sunday, May 26. The three-night event will also include the Timed Event Special, which takes place Thursday evening, May 23. “We’ll have the brightest stars in Pro Rodeo, including world champions like Trevor Brazile, J.W. Harris, Wes Stevenson and hundreds of others who have made the Claremore rodeo the place to test their skills each year for nearly seven decades,” says

Petty. “We’ll bring in around 500 contestants to Claremore from all over the country. More than 25 states will be represented with a total prize purse of over $75,000.” The round-up club is also raising money for charity this year. “We are a non-profit,” says Petty, “and we want to give back to the community that supports us.”

Matt Bright, a three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier, sets his rigging before his ride at the 2012 Will Rogers Stampede. Bright is one of numerous NFR qualifiers who plan to be in Claremore for the 2013 Stampede, which will be produced by elite stock contractor Carr Pro Rodeo and Pete Carr’s Classic Pro Rodeo. “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” is the theme for Sunday night’s performance with contestants sporting pink attire to bring awareness to and raise money for cancer research. “We plan to donate half the proceeds to Rogers County Relay For Life,” Petty adds. The other half of the -proceeds will benefit the International FOP Association (IFOPA), a non-profit organization supporting medical research for those afflicted by the rare genetic condition fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). “Two Rogers County individuals, including four-year-old Zip Gordon, suffer from this disease for which there is no cure,” says Petty. “The Meltons (of Melton Dodge) have been a strong supporter of the stampede for years. We want to give back by donating money to research for this rare disease.” Pink boots will be passed around for donations each night of the rodeo and the final total will be distributed equally between the two charities. For those arriving before 7 p.m. and wearing pink to attend the Sunday night Cowboy Church Service, rodeo admission is free. Sponsored by Rogers County area churches, the service will begin at 6:30. Gates open at 6 p.m. Lots of family entertainment will be featured at the rodeo. Specialty act The One Arm Bandit & Company is a Wild West show fit for a king, featuring the bandit himself, John Payne. Since 1988, John

has entertained rodeo fans around the world. He rides a variety of good horses and a few mules in a truly unique show that also features longhorn steers, buffalo, and sometime dogs. Rodeo Clown Mark Swingler, from Austin, Texas, has been entertaining rodeo fans in the PRCA for the past 11 years, and the Will Rogers Stampede Rodeo will be no exception. Mark’s impromptu barrel routines have long pleased crowds of young and the young at heart. The Will Rogers rodeo grounds are located a mile and a half east of Highway 66 on Blue Starr Drive. Admission is $12 for adults and $7 for children at the gate. However, adults can save $2 and children $1 by purchasing advance tickets online at www.willrogersstampede.com. “We couldn’t put on this rodeo,” says Petty, “without the volunteers, the businesses and individuals in our community who sponsor the event. I think a lot of cowboys from around here are going to love the show we put on this year. For those who might live in Tulsa, it doesn’t get any better than a fun time at the rodeo, getting back in touch with their Western roots and enjoying a great weekend of entertainment.” For more information, contact

C.C. Brown is the pseudonym adopted by the three authors of “Dark Side.” Schyriet Cameron, Carolyn Craig and Kathy Brown co-authored the paranormal romance. “Dark Side” was chosen Best of Show at the 2011 and 2012 Northern Literary Arts Book Festival and the “Number One Summer Read” by the Springfield News-Leader in 2011. Wesley Fox, author and director of Branson Paranormal Chasers, will be

signing copies of his suspenseful mystery books, “The Dark Craft,” during the event. Cost is $10 per person. “Some of these buildings have been vacant for over 60 years,” says Cindy. “It will be interesting to see if someone’s ghost is still lingering.” Sidewalk entertainment will also be provided free by a variety of musical

performers. “We’re excited to host this event downtown,” says Cindy. “It’s an opportunity to showcase our unique shops and our specialty restaurants. It will be a relaxing evening for families to stroll, visit the shops and taste the food.” For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Claremore Main Street, Inc. at (918) 341-5881 or mainstreet@claremore.org.

Cost is $25 a person or $50 for a doubles team with proceeds benefiting Volunteers for Youth. Each participant will receive a Serve for Youth visor or water bottle. Winners will be awarded a Serve for Youth champion towel. Don’t have a doubles partner? No problem! We’ll do our best to pair participants for the tournament. Ready to sign up? Go to www.volunteersforyouth.com/ events/serve-for-youth and click on the link for the entry form. Players under 18 may play with a parent’s consent. Tennis skill levels for participants varied last year, from college level players to weekend warriors and high school players. In the true spirit of charity, one player signed up after he hadn’t picked up a racket in 20 years. We accept all skill levels! This tournament benefits Volunteers for Youth. Their mission is to positively impact the lives of youth in Rogers County and provide services including mentoring, safe and structured activities, and service opportunities.

Currently, Volunteers for Youth offers three programs: PAL, BLAST and StepUp. The PAL program is a schoolbased mentoring program that matches a student who could benefit from pairing with a caring adult mentor at school. The PAL program recently introduced an ePAL program, where the mentor emails with a student weekly, and visits at school for an hour a month. BLAST is an after school program where a child can get help with homework and have fun after school. StepUp offers juvenile first offenders and those demonstrating signs of delinquent behavior an opportunity to avoid the overcrowded juvenile court system and a chance to get back on track while being closely monitored and supported. Volunteers for Youth participates in the Drug Free Communities project and provides education in drug and alcohol prevention for teens. Volunteers for Youth is a 501c3 status, nonprofit organization supported by individual contributions, grants, fundraisers, and the Rogers County United Way. AArt Bike Tulsa

An exciting and unique art show is scheduled throughout the month of May to promote MS awareness and Bike MS 2013.

By Duane Blankenship Each year the National MS Society Oklahoma hosts a variety of special fundraising events for the purpose of raising awareness about multiple sclerosis. Funds raised help support programs and services available to Oklahomans with this disease. Programs provide knowledge, recreation, family and social support, and awareness throughout the greater Tulsa community. The annual signature event of the National MS Society is Bike MS, and 2013 marks its 28th anniversary in Oklahoma. Bike MS is not “just a bike ride,” but an experience for all who participate in the event. It is one of the best supported cycling events in our state. The two-day Bike MS 2013 will commence September 21 from the Agri Civic Center in Chandler and finish there the next day. Nearly 1,000 riders will join forces to raise money. Although Bike MS is a challenging event, riders return year after year, supporting the movement to create a world free of MS. A unique awareness campaign began three years ago in Tulsa to inform residents about the disease, local fundraising efforts, and the

annual Bike MS. This year will mark the third annual Art Bike Tulsa, which coincides with Tulsa International Mayfest in downtown Tulsa. Art Bike Tulsa will run May 1-31 at the YMCA of Greater Tulsa located at 418 S. Main. The event will be open to the public Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the entire month of May. Art Bike Tulsa will also be on display at Tulsa International Airport from June 1 through September 30. The presenting sponsor is SCFM Compression Systems. Art Bike Tulsa is an exciting, unusual, fun display of art made entirely of old bicycle parts. The unique explosion of creativeness is one that your entire family will enjoy. This year’s exhibit will include works of art from successful local artists and student artists from Union, Broken Arrow, and Booker T. Washington High Schools. Some of the featured Tulsa artists include Michael Christopher, Robin Green Tilly, Billie Sue Thompson and Jan McKay. Jan has been an MS volunteer for 23 years and has participated in Bike MS for 20 years. “I ride in honor

of my good friend, Rhonda Fletcher, who was diagnosed with MS 23 years ago.” Jan loves riding for the cause and has been blessed with meeting many great people along Bike MS routes. “I wish no one had to endure MS,” says Jan. “I feel good aiding in fundraising efforts to assist others.” Rhonda Fletcher volunteers at the MS Society office once or twice a week. “I am appreciative of the riders who endure Bike MS each year for me and others who have been diagnosed with MS,” she said. When first diagnosed, Rhonda went into denial. “My good friend Jan literally bugged me for years to get involved with the organization.” When Rhonda finally did, she was impressed by every person she met and was touched that they were doing so much for her and others. PPrepare Thyself for Merriment The Castle of Muskogee’s annual Oklahoma Renaissance Festival runs May 4 through June 2. By Sheryl Sowell Travel to 1539 Castleton for the Castle of Muskogee’s Oklahoma Renaissance Festival. King Henry VIII and his sister, Queen Margaret of Scotland, are on progress through the fair land, and this year, they are joined by King Francis of France and King James of Scotland. There is sure to be mirth, merriment, and mischief throughout the Village. More than 600 costumed merchants, artisans, and performers populate Castleton, transporting visitors to the 16th century. Music, comedy, swordplay, and magic can be found on 15 stages throughout the grounds. They welcome several new performers to the stages this year, including Bawdily Harm (comedic swordplay), Black Oak Shillelagh (Celtic music), and Ed “Cheeks” Miller (sea shanties and more). Returning favorites include The Musical Blades, The Jolly Rogers, Karma Dogma, Ez N Dil, The Jester Rejects, Raks al Hassana Bellydance, the Laundry Lasses, and many more. Sir Thomas and Sir Richard of The Heroic Knights of Old joust twice each day in the Tournament Arena, The Royal Gauntlet Birds of Prey showcases the grandeur of hawks and

falcons, and Cast in Bronze fills the arena with the awesome sound of the Carillon bells. The Royal Luncheon is served each day by the arena, where you can dine with His Majesty while watching the tournament below. Inside the Castle Keep you can witness presentations to the Royal Court or attend the Queen’s Tea. Enjoy the 37,000square-foot Castle with its dungeon, Torture Chamber, catacombs, and so much more. While most of the festival is strictly family entertainment,

adults can sneak away to attend the King’s Smoker (21 and over) each afternoon for some bawdy humor. Children and families will delight in the newly expanded Woodlands area. Visit Excalibur Keepe to sign good behavior contracts; learn to make marbles, paper, and chain mail; play games; hunt for pirate treasure; and explore the Enchanted Faery Forest. Dance around the Maypole or visit the Black House or the Garrison to learn all about life in Renaissance England.

Sir Thomas and Sir Richard joust in the Tournament Arena.

Over 600 costumed performers, artisans and merchants populate Castleton during the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival. Don’t forget to indulge in some of the wonderful food all over the site – smoked turkey legs or homemade barbecue, roasted ears of corn, Mediterranean delights, fresh baked bread and pastries, ice cream, and more. And, you can find refreshing drinks (from water to cappuccino to ale) at any one of the eight pubs in the Village. You are welcome to come in plain clothes, a costume of your own, or rent a costume for the day from the shop just inside the Main Entrance. You can even exchange money at the Bank for Castleton coin, accepted throughout the Village. Plan now for delightful May days at the Renaissance Festival! The festival will be open each Saturday and Sunday beginning May 4 through June 2, plus Student Day on Friday, May 10 and Memorial Day on Monday, May 27.

Outdoor Soccer Returns to Tulsa The Tulsa Athletics’ first game will be at the original Driller’s Stadium at 15th and Yale on Saturday, May 18.

By Sheryl Sowell On July 13, 1985, the Tulsa Roughnecks of the North American Soccer League played their final match at the original Driller’s Stadium at 15th and Yale. On May 18, 2013, the Tulsa Athletics will take that same field as outdoor soccer finally makes its return to Tulsa. When the NASL and the Tulsa Roughnecks ceased to be,

several players stayed in the Tulsa area, remaining active in the soccer community which they had helped create. Their bond with the community is still evident today as thousands of athletes have played under their tutelage. Tulsa is revered across the country as a soccer city, with our youth clubs being some of the

most talented and competitive. However, there has been a gap at the top adult level since 1985. This summer, the journey back to the top of the soccer map begins. “When support meets ambition, only success can follow in soccer,” said team co-owner Sonny Dalesandro. Tulsans have an unrivaled passion for the game of soccer,

Coach Joey Ryan, Dr. Tommy Kern, Sonny Dalesandro and Jake Dobkins of the Tulsa Athletics organization.

www.ValueNews.com so much so that several attempts have been made to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to our city. This is the Tulsa Athletics’ goal as well, one step at a time. Rekindling the love that Tulsa has for the game at its highest level is the first priority. Four of the newer, yet most successful clubs in MLS are teams that played in lower divisions, and because of incredible fan support made the jump to the MLS. This is the Tulsa Athletics’ ultimate goal. This summer will be Tulsa Athletics’ inaugural season in the National Premiere Soccer League, the largest league in the United States, with 61 teams competing across the country. It is the perfect league for a new ambitious franchise to start its journey towards returning Tulsa to the forefront of the soccer map in America. Co-owner Sonny Dalesandro was the youngest Oklahoman to play professionally when he debuted for Tulsa’s USISL franchise in 1995. Dalesandro won “Rookie of the Year” that season and went on to have a six-year career, playing for the Milwaukee Wave and the Wichita Wings. “Some of my very earliest memories are of Skelly Stadium and the Tulsa Roughnecks, and today’s youth deserve that same impression that I was afforded.” Dr. Tommy Kern, co-owner of the Tulsa Athletics and a sports medicine physician for Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center, grew up playing soccer in Tulsa and went on to play at

Brown University prior to medical school at the University of Oklahoma. “We are excited to bring high-level soccer back to Tulsa to match the quality of the youth programs.” Joey Ryan, head coach of the Tulsa Athletics, has been coaching since the mid-80s after having played professionally in the American Soccer League, the NASL, and indoor in the MISL. Ryan was also an NCAA division 1 champion with the legendary, undefeated Hartwick College team of 1977. Ryan has coached at the youth, high school, semi-pro and professional level in New York, New Jersey and Oklahoma. “My staff and I are extremely excited to be a part of the resurrection of both outdoor soccer in Tulsa and the old Drillers Stadium at Expo Square and look forward to many entertaining, successful games being played there. The owners have done a fantastic job of putting this project together, and we hope to work as hard and represent Tulsa on the field as well as they have in putting this franchise together.” Bring the whole family out for the Tulsa Athletics’ first game on Saturday, May 18. Tickets are available at www.tulsa-athletics.com; reserved seating is $10 and general admission is $5. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter at Ttownsoccer. For more information, contact
