he VAMP team has had the most incredible experience featuring the best of urban culture this year, and this Christmas issue is the cherry on top. The VAMP fashion team has outdone themselves this edition, with seriously stylish fashion features - from easy every day winter looks, to high glam Christmas party inspiration. We love the art this issue - Sandro Giordano brings us Bodies with No Regret; a sardonic glimpse of materialism overriding safety. Architecture is no let down either, with Iranian architects Keivani bringing us “House of Sun” - a nod to Persian civilisation, culture, and values. The exciting Les Bains hotel is the travel feature this issue, making us want to party like they did when it was Les Bains Douches nightclub - a world of vivid inspirations and offbeat experiences, avant-garde eccentricities and iconic pioneers. It’s all here this issue. Get into the mood for a beautified, luxurious, trend-setting Christmas! A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all, from the VAMP team. >>

THE ENTITY OF TRUTH Personnal Con-versions is a figurative and abstract art exhibition by Japanese painter Naoya Inose and French artist Julien Vinet, in which they present 7 artworks each that are inspired by the same title. The interpretations of the title in their own unique style emphasise the fact that truth is subjective, and that ‘our world’ is made up of personal experiences: our background gives us one idea of the world around us, which is our own truth. The exhibition is on until the 24th of December at Lily Agius Gallery, 54 Cathedral Street, Sliema. For more information you can call 99292488, email info@lilyagiusgallery.com or see the website, www.lilyagiusgallery.com

X M A S I S S U E 063
MUSING Klari Reis uses the tools and techniques of science in her creative process, constantly experimenting with new ways to apply materials and methods. She is driven by curiosity and her desire to explore and document the natural and unnatural with a sense of wonder and joy. The artist currently works in San Francisco, close to one of the largest concentrations of life science companies in the world. Klari takes advantage of this proximity to collaborate with local biomedical companies and thus receive inspiration from the cutting edge of biological techniques and discoveries; this context grounds her artwork and lets her authoritatively explore the increasingly fuzzy line between the technological and the natural. The unifying theme of Klari’s art is her mastery of a new media plastic, epoxy polymer, and the fine control she brings to its reactions with a constantlyexpanding variety of dyes and pigments. The UV-resistant plastic, similar to resin, supplies a common framework for the methods and language that she uses to explore and express interactions of material and colour on a microscopic
level. Compositions display brightly coloured smears, bumps and blobs atop aluminium and wood panels. She pigments the plastic with powders, oils, acrylics and industrial dyes, built up through many layers of the ultraglossy plastic. The shapes and colours bleed, blur, shift, and spread becoming remarkable through their eccentric detail. A skilled technician with a studio
for a laboratory, Klari has turned these processes of her own invention into science in the service of her art. Klari continues to develop her process and explore her unique synthesis of biology and creativity via her installation works, Hypochondria. The projects consist of hand-painted petri dishes mounted on the wall at varying distances in groupings of 150, 60, or 30 pieces. [ V ]

DESIGN It’s for those who appreciate the craftsmanship of it.” There was a lot of preparation for this dress. Very often, a fashion designer will create a dress using a model, but with this particular one, James had to draft a dress with darts on every aspect and create it first. Paper is by no means as easy or malleable to work with as fabric, and as a result, he had to work with the material by trial and error to get it right. There were no machines involved; James hand-cut all the thin paper strips, and in some cases glued one to the other to get length. He then wove one under the other. Since the accessories were made out of the same material, their folds and creases proved even more challenging. “When I began doing research, it was one thing - but then when I embarked on the reality of it, it was a lot harder than I thought it would be. The material is so different and difficult to use. There are certain rules when designing with fabric that just couldn’t apply with paper. I couldn’t just pick up a pattern that I found in a book; I had to find it all out by actually doing it. The folding was particularly tricky. To get the back and
The dress that you see on the front cover of this issue is one made of recycled Vamp Magazine paper, intricately designed, and then created by folding and weaving paper by Designer James Dimech in collaboration with his sister, Make-up Artist Jennifer Dimech. Dress design: James Dimech Model: Biljana from Supernova Make-up: Jennifer Dimech Hair: Nicole Gera Photography: Matthew B Spiteri
James Dimech is not a fashion designer as such, but rather an interior designer, spending his days creating spaces for his clients’ specific requirements. “The creation of this dress was a breath of fresh air for me in terms of creativity. While there is an element of expresiveness in interior design, it’s nearly impossible to have total creative licence.” It all began with the brother and sister team wanting to work on a project together next year. Their idea was to create a set of paper dresses combined with certain make-up and photography. In the meantime, the opportunity arose to make a dress for the front cover of Vamp. It was James’ idea to create this first dress using only recycled Vamp paper. This would be the teaser, and then eventually the designer would like to try it with architectural paper. “This was in no way designed to be replaced with fabric in the future. This is an art piece - a way of expression for me.
neck right, I had to use the same kind of folds that are used in origami. I used the ancient Chinese technique as a source of inspiration to create a simple way of folding the paper. It turned out to be effective in particular areas. The whole thing was just a series of completely different procedures. It took a lot of care and patience.” Since James has a hectic day-long work schedule, he had to work on the dress on and off - and worked mostly nights. He would finish work at 11pm, and then work on the dress throughout the night. >> X M A S I S S U E 067
DESIGN Working in this manner, it took him approximately a month from start to finish. Once the dress was created, and all the other elements fell into place, James and Jennifer were pleased with the end result. “Jennifer knew what kind of makeup I wanted, so my mind was at rest on this. We experimented with and tweaked our initial vision along the way, but it was in joint agreement. At the very end, when it came close to shoot time, I was afraid of the end result because by then, there were different elements that were beyond my control. I was extremely finicky with choosing the model, but she turned out to be really great. “By working on this, it triggered a lot of ideas that I’ll hopefully have the time to work on in the future. I learned something really interesting from the whole project. I am a self-confessed workaholic and often work very late into the night finishing off things. In these cases, I usually wake up feeling tired, but when I worked late into the night on this project, I felt much better when I woke up. It was like therapy for me to break from the usual routine. It was just me and my creativity, and I felt free. I was able to create exactly what I imagined; it was like working on a piece of art. “I also remembered that we should never give up on dreams. It’s never too late. A huge credit to my sis for giving me the push.” [ V ]

THE AB U S E OF PO WE R :
The Stanford Prison Experiment
070 XMAS ISSUE
L
ast year, The Stanford Prison Experiment film was released. The movie is an account of the Stanford prison experiment in which students played the role of a prisoner or a prison guard conducted at Stanford University under the supervision of psychology professor Philip Zimbardo in 1971. Professor Zimbardo conducted the experiment to test the hypothesis that the personality traits of prisoners and guards are the chief cause of abusive behaviour between them. In the experiment, Zimbardo selected 15 male students to participate in a 14-day prison simulation to take roles as prisoners or guards. They received $15 per day, and the experiment was conducted in a mock prison located in the basement of Jordan Hall, the university’s psychology department building. The outcome was that the students who were role-playing guards became abusive, as well as the professor himself. It became so intense so quickly that two students who played the role of prisoners quit the experiment early, and Zimbardo abruptly stopped the entire experiment after only six days.
PEOPLE Professor Zimbardo: “How we went about testing these questions and what we found may astound you. Our planned two-week investigation into the psychology of prison life had to be ended after only six days because of what the situation was doing to the college students who participated. In only a few days, our guards became sadistic and our prisoners became depressed and showed signs of extreme stress.” Here’s what happened… The end result of the experiment: “On the fifth night, some visiting parents asked me to contact a lawyer in order to get their son out of prison. They said a Catholic priest had called to tell them they should get a lawyer or public defender if they wanted to bail their son out! I called the lawyer as requested, and he came the next day to interview the prisoners with a standard set of legal questions, even though he, too, knew it was just an experiment. At this point it became clear that we had to end the study. We had created an overwhelmingly powerful situation - a situation in which prisoners were withdrawing and behaving in pathological ways, and in which some of the guards were behaving sadistically. Even the “good” guards felt helpless to intervene, and none of the guards quit while the study was in progress. Indeed, it should be noted that no
guard ever came late for his shift, called in sick, left early, or demanded extra pay for overtime work. I ended the study prematurely for two reasons. First, we had learned through videotapes that the guards were escalating their abuse of prisoners in the middle of the night when they thought no researchers were watching and the experiment was “off”. Their boredom had driven them to ever more pornographic and degrading abuse of the prisoners. Second, Christina Maslach, a recent Stanford Ph.D. brought in to conduct interviews with the guards and prisoners, strongly objected when she saw our prisoners being marched on a toilet run, bags over their heads, legs chained together, hands on each other’s shoulders. Filled with outrage, she said, “It’s terrible what you are doing to these boys!” Out of 50 or more outsiders who had seen our prison, she was the only one who ever questioned its morality. Once she countered the power of the situation, however, it became clear that the study should be ended. And so, after only six days, our planned two-week prison simulation was called off. >>

PEOPLE
On the last day, we held a series of encounter sessions, first with all the guards, then with all the prisoners (including those who had been released earlier), and finally with the guards, prisoners, and staff together. We did this in order to get everyone’s feelings out in the open, to recount what we had observed in each other and ourselves, and to share our experiences, which to each of us had been quite profound. We also tried to make this a time for moral reeducation by discussing the conflicts posed by this simulation and our behaviour. For example, we reviewed the moral alternatives that had been available to us, so that we would be better equipped to behave morally in future real-life situations, avoiding or opposing situations that might transform ordinary individuals into willing perpetrators or victims of evil.
072 XMAS ISSUE
Two months after the study, here is the reaction of prisoner #416, our wouldbe hero who was placed in solitary confinement for several hours: “I began to feel that I was losing my identity, that the person that I called Clay, the person who put me in this place, the person who volunteered to go into this prison – because it was a prison to me; it still is a prison to me. I don’t regard it as an experiment or a simulation because it was a prison run by psychologists instead of run by the state. I began to feel that my identity, the person that I was that had decided to go to prison was distant from me – was remote until finally I wasn’t that, I was 416. I was really my number.” Compare his reaction to that of the following prisoner who wrote to me from an Ohio penitentiary after being in solitary confinement for an inhumane length of time:
“I was recently released from solitary confinement after being held therein for thirty-seven months. The silence system was imposed upon me and if I even whispered to the man in the next cell resulted in being beaten by guards, sprayed with chemical mace, black jacked, stomped, and thrown into a strip cell naked to sleep on a concrete floor without bedding, covering, wash basin, or even a toilet… I know that thieves must be punished, and I don’t justify stealing even though I am a thief myself. But now I don’t think I will be a thief when I am released. No, I am not rehabilitated either. It is just that I no longer think of becoming wealthy or stealing. I now only think of killing - killing those who have beaten me and treated me as if I were a dog. I hope and pray for the sake of my own soul and future life of freedom that I am able to overcome the bitterness and hatred which eats daily at my soul. But I know to overcome it will not be easy.” [ V ]

__IN EXTREMIS began in Autumn 2013 after a bad accident with a friend of mine on my bike. We both held on tight to the bike as we hurt ourselves. After the accident, my friend ended up in the hospital with a broken leg. At the time, I thought that there was something very dangerous in our behaviour; assailed by materialism, we had moved our own safety to the background. I found this really disturbing.

I began to take photographs of people upside down, or face-down for personal pleasure and enjoyment. This all linked to the idea that materialism overrides safety. The world is in downward motion, especially the western side of it. I concentrated on a spiritual downfall more than a physical one. I think that what we see on the outside is the consequence of an inner death. I’d like
people to smile, think, and empathise with my characters’ stories. What happens to them could happen to any of us. The models in these photographs are all friends of mine, or actor colleagues. I like working with people who know how to use their bodies. >>

The way I work is that the photograph is in my mind for several days, but it’s only made possible once the right location has been found, and after I go there a couple of times to try out the shots. I take some photos from different angles so that I can study them once they’re on my computer. In front of this empty scene, I build and imagine the whole set, including the positions for the models. Everything that happens around the models is scenic design; nothing is accidental. So, leaving out the time the photo has actually been in mind, it takes about 10-15 days, sometimes a little more, to produce the photograph. As time goes by, everything becomes more and more complex with a longer and more accurate production. I don’t know where I’ll end up, but it sure is very exciting.” [ V ]

SUN IS THE SYMBOL OF LIGHT, AND “ LIGHT IS THE SYMBOL OF KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM. ”

D
uring the design of Mehr Khaneh, Keivani Architects considered two essential factors to develop the concept of the interior design. The first factor was the client’s interest in Persian civilisation, culture, and values, namely the metaphors of Mithraism and Sun. The second factor was the artistic character of the client, which had to be reflected in the design. Considering the budget restrictions, the architects aimed to develop a minimal and affordable space, yet artistic and Iranian genius loci with a symbolic
approach to Mithraism. By conceptualising the design based on the styles of loft-style architecture, they used exposed concrete, rebar, and metal oxide to design the space. The choice of brick and wood as well as lighting design created a cosy and warm atmosphere that’s desirable for a residential place. One of the most important design ideas the architects implemented was the set of stairs located in the living room. This symbolic, yet philosophical element was inspired from historic mehrabs and ziggurats, which are symbols of promotion and approaching closer to Sun. >>
An example of the design being a symbol of approaching Sun and advancing knowledge that’s essential for improvement and actualisation of thoughts for the artist homeowner: the direction and raise of stairs are towards the east and sunrise.

Keivani Architects: “Sun is the symbol of light, and light is the symbol of knowledge and wisdom. This design is a symbol of approaching Sun and advancing knowledge that’s essential for improvement and actualisation of thoughts for an artist. The direction and raise of stairs are towards the east and sunrise.” The lighting fixture design is also inspired by the symbolic role of Sun, and it follows the geometric symbol of Sun, which is a triangle surrounded by a dodecagon, used in traditional Iranian architecture. In a part of the ceiling, the triangular and pyramidal shapes are used so that they are extensions of the light radiation that pass through the roof. The light shines inside such that
no barrier - even a concrete wall - can prevent the knowledge and wisdom from coming through. The ancient sun pattern was used as a light frame in this unit. The furniture was designed in accord with the aforementioned concepts, realised by using materials such as concrete, rebar, and metals. Not only did the architects apply this concept to the kitchen interior design for consistency, but they also used turquoise tiles in this space to inspire the sense of place (Genius loci) that emerges in the Iranian traditional architecture. Considering the role of plants in traditional Iranian architecture, planting components have been placed in
different parts of this unit - for example, in the kitchen, as hanging components. In the space right in front of the kitchen, wooden materials were used to create a beautiful scenery with the special daylight available at sunset. One room is used as the home office and meeting room, designed with simple yet creative ideas like using patterns of concrete for the floor lamps. Although affordable materials such as concrete, rebar, and recycled wood were used in the bedroom’s interior design, the architects’ design has created a desirable and relaxing space to satisfy the requirements of a bedroom. FOOD 2 sprigs rosemary 2 sprigs thyme 8 juniper berries 10 peppercorns, crushed 1 onion, sliced 1 carrot, chopped 1 garlic, head cut in half Roe Deer Bresola with fig chutney, goats cheese & pine needle smoke Fig Chutney 10ml vegetable oil 1 large red onion, peeled & finely chopped 2cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled & grated 120g dark brown sugar 125ml apple cider vinegar 1 lime juice and zest of 100g dried cranberries, diced ½ tsp mustard seeds 1 small cinnamon stick 2g ground allspice 3g tsp salt 1 stick lemon grass 450g fresh figs, stemmed & diced Method: In a sauce pan, heat the oil over a medium flame. Add the onions and cook until translucent, and keep stirring to avoid any browning. Add all the other ingredients except the figs and simmer for around 20 minutes. Then add the figs and reduce the heat. Keep cooking and stirring until the mixture acquires a jamlike consistency. Decorate the plate with pears poached in mulled wine, shavings of dried goats cheese, honey olive oil dressing and pistachio crisp.
For the sauce: 60g red currant jelly 200g blackberries Method: Mix the marinade ingredients together in a large bowl, add the venison haunch, and allow to marinate in the fridge overnight. Remove the joint from the marinade and drain the vegetables. Heat a pan, add some oil, and lightly fry the vegetable mixture. Once browned, transfer to a baking dish and place the haunch on top. Season the venison with salt & pepper, and cover with the pork fat. In a pre-heated oven set at 190C, place the leg to roast. It will take approximately 1½-2 hours to roast. Place the red wine in a pot and reduce by half. Remove the roast from the oven and allow the haunch to rest. Drain the juices and strain through a fine sieve. Add the juices to the red wine and return to the heat. Add the red currant jelly and the blackberries. Once the berries are soft, blend and pass the sauce through a fine sieve. Add the butter and whisk in; adjust seasoning if necessary. Carve the venison and serve with vegetables and potatoes of your choice.
Method for the blood pancakes: Mix the blood and milk in a large bowl and blend well. Gradually, mix in barley flour, stirring continuously. Pour in the egg and syrup; mix well. Keep the bowl covered for 30 minutes. Shape the mixture into flat, round cakes. Grease a pancake griddle and bake the pancakes on both sides for 2-3 minutes, or until browned. Serve with jam. For the lingonberries: 1kg lingonberries 200ml water 800g sugar Method for the lingonberries: Wash the lingonberries and pick out any impurities. Natural lingonberries usually don’t have insects and worms in them (compared to raspberries), so the washing should be quick. Weigh the berries and place them into a big cooking pot. Add the water to the berries in the pot and cook on low heat for about 10 minutes. Mix frequently, and the fruits will get a bit softer by cooking them first because lingonberries are hard. Add the whole sugar amount to the berries. Mix the content well. Cook on slow heat for about 40 minutes, while stirring at times, until you can see a rolling boil. At that point, the jam should be ready and you can take it from the heat. Test if the jam is set by dropping some on a cold plate. It’s ready if it doesn’t run. If it runs, keep cooking for some more time on low heat and repeat the test until you have the correct consistency. To plate, drizzle the jam onto a plate, arrange pieces of cake randomly, then fill in with the forest micro greens.
Roast Haunch of Venison with Blackberry and Red Wine Jus 1 haunch venison, around 4 kg pork fat, sliced (to keep the joint moist during roasting)
For the marinade: 1 litre good red wine 2 bay leaves
Veriohukainen (Deer Blood Pancakes), Lingonberry Jam, Red Wine Jelly, forest micro greens, dried flowers and an array of colours
Place a spoon full of the jam onto the plate, then place the blood pancake onto the jam. Place any forest berries on top as garnish. Sprinkle with the dried flowers. Enjoy.

Les Bains Paris 126 XMAS ISSUE
If you’re into history, try this out for size. Now a gorgeously revamped 39-room hotel, this building began life in 1885 as Les Bains Guerbois, a public bathhouse with a steam room and restaurant where the toast of Paris would dine. In the late 1970s and 80s, the venue was redesigned by Philippe Starck to become the illustrious Les Bains Douches - a nightclub frequented by artists, models and stars. This became a world of vivid inspirations and offbeat experiences, avant-garde eccentricities and iconic pioneers. Here, Marcel Proust submerged in a sulfur bath, Joy Division recorded an album live, Warhol and Basquiat danced to Saturday night fever, and Saint Laurent hosted after-show dinners, to name a few. >>

The concert hall, disco, restaurant, fashion temple, and rallying point for artists became an institution for the likes of Depeche Mode, Brian Ferry, Simple Minds, Keith Haring, Johnny Depp, Karl Lagerfeld, Catherine Deneuve, Sean Penn, and many others. When Les Bains Douches was forced to close in 2010, film director Jean-Pierre Maurois came on to the scene with a team of artists, designers and architects to complete his vision: to breathe new life into this city landmark by adding bedrooms and turning it into a 24-hour restaurant-bar-club-hotel. Marois says of the renovation, “Our only aim was to build a nest for creative people where they are able to invent, develop, and present new trends in a fertile haven. Here, one eye is always looking to the future, while the other is acknowledging its rich past. >>
