EDITOR’S NOTE Here we are. Summer of 2015. Vancouver fashion has evolved exponentially in the last 5 years. When we began I felt like there was a void in the Vancouver fashion scene so I decided to fill it by taking fashion down a more edgier, futuristic path. Our mission was not just to showcase Vancouver fashion to the world but showcase the worlds fashion to Vancouver by highlighting the fearless tastemakers that use fashion as a way to unveil there individuality to the masses. VCV magazine is not just about the trends its about the trendsetters. We merge the more innovative aspects of fashion with the latest technological advances. VCV magazine uses a non traditional style evidenced by our cover. Our goal is to display fashion thats ahead of its time by focusing more on the spirit of the fashion rather then just the clothes. Creating VCV magazine has been quite the journey itself. Equal parts hard work and passion has made this the most fulfilling realities one could experience. However this would not be possible without everyone who has been a part of our team. All the enthusiastic contributors who understood our vision made this dream a possibility. From the bottom of our heart we would like to thank each and every person that has ever devoted there time and energy to the VCV brand. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

JOGGER PANT TREND The Jogger Pant Trend has won my heart over. I am so obsessed with them that I actually am wearing a pair while writing this. You have probably seen this look trending on instagram, off-duty models sporting the look during fashion week and all over the fashion blogs. This is the upscale cozy jogger pant that has put a staple on comfort for your ultimate “off duty model” look. Whether you are wearing leather jogger pants, cotton, chiffon or denim. 1. TELL US A BRIEF PARAGRAPH ABOUT YOURSELF.

I am a woman who loves love. For me, seeking out beauty and opportunity for growth in every situation is of extreme importance. I am driven by creativity, motivated by passion, and fuelled by purpose. I am ever changing, constantly growing, evolving, and moving forward for that which does not grow is dead. 2. WHO INSPIRED YOU TO START SINGING?

can remember I just loved to do it. I grew up in Church singing in a kids quartet, and performed solos regularly, so I think that Otherwise, my family has always been extremely supportive and encouraging, and they are all talented musically as well. I think it’s just in my blood! 3. DO YOU WRITE YOUR OWN MUSIC? IF SO WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION TO WRITE?

I do yes. So far I’ve liked to write from my own experiences. It’s the absolute scariest thing I can imagine - digging inside of your own soul to share it with the world. But so far it’s been hugely rewarding and internally healing. It’s been amazing to experience the release that happens when you let go of your past through music. I am largely inspired however by the people conversations I have, and new people I meet. Everything is beautiful, but not everyone sees it. If you can’t see beauty, you have to change your prospective. 19

7. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

I don’t know that I could put my style into one simple category and present it. I’ve always said I don’t dress for anyone but myself. Sometimes people say

doesn’t matter - if I feel good, then that is going to display outwardly. No one made fashion Style is an every day way that anyone can showcase their own creativity. Sometimes I feel edgy, other times simplistic, and still other days bold and daring. I or regurgitate old ideas. I use fashion to keep pushing myself to always evolve into something different, something greater. 8. YOUR SECRET FOR PERFECT EYEBROWS?

a little bit at this one. I don’t know if I have a secret per say -

4. PHOENIX LAURÉN (AND THE STRENGTH) IS THAT THE NAME OF YOUR BAND?

5. WHERE IS YOUR NEXT SHOW WHERE YOU WILL BE SINGING IN VANCOUVER?

my band, before I relocated here to Vancouver. Right now I am focusing on a solo project - but when the time is right I will have a band together again for larger live performance shows!

show starts at 8pm.

9. IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE BETWEEN CHOCOLATE OR CANDY WHAT WOULD IT BE? WHY?

12. NOW THAT IT’S GETTING WARMER OUT, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO DURING THE SUMMER IN VANCOUVER?

a huge sweet eater, but I feel chocolate is in a realm of it’s own! Plus I eat it with salt and vinegar chips, which I don’t think would

Well there are the obvious ones like the beach, and soaking up the sun on a patio - but lately I’ve been really enjoying exploring up and coming areas in Van on

again you never know… 10. WHERE DO YOU WISH TO SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS?

more traveling - hopefully with a more established brand, and touring with my music. I think in 5 years from now it’s more what I want to be known for. I want to others to change the way they think. I want to be known as an achiever, someone who doesn’t give up, someone who doesn’t back down - someone who didn’t stop in their pursuit of living out their dreams. 11. ARE THERE ANY DESIGNERS YOU ARE INSPIRED BY?

designers I’m inspired by. I could probably go on for a long time, but really it’s anyone who pushes the boundaries within the aren’t afraid to fail, aren’t afraid to take risks, and they aren’t driven by what other’s think of them. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olson are classic examples of women who are business minded in how they have carried out their dreams, yet they also stayed true to what they each love, letting their creativity and individuality be the driving force behind their empire.

even opposed to taking transit or biking, you have such a different perspective of a city - you really get to see it in a different light. places in more low key areas of town that aren’t as well known but are true gems! 13. DO YOU HAVE ANY HIDDEN TALENTS?

Although I would say now I’m a little rusty - I used to produce and sell visual art. It’s something I kind of put it on the back burner, but have been thinking a lot about starting up again!

14. NAME THREE PHONE APPS YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT (IE: SOCIAL NETWORKING, EDITING TOOLS, ETC)

Well I’d be lying if I didn’t say Instagram! After that it’s a bit of a toss up. My favourite editing app is against the most popular but who doesn’t love a movie night in? Or the Chipotle app because doesn’t love skipping chipotle’s line?!! Amirite?!

15. IF YOU COULD COLLABORATE WITH ANY MUSICIAN WHO WOULD IT BE?

Agh there are soooo many that I would love to collab with, so I had to just pick one though, I would have to choose Ms. Lauryn soul! I’ve recently been listening to her live album again and I can’t get through it without becoming emotional. It’s like she’s sharing parts of my life. So so powerful. 16. WHAT ARE SOME TIPS FOR STAYING CREATIVE AND INSPIRED?

For me, it is the realization and knowledge that you are never going to feel creative or inspired 100% of the time - and that is to you as a source of inspiration you can get caught up trying to deliver a perception of who you are, but it isn’t necessarily the reality. Sometimes I feel creative, and sometimes I feel inspired is important is how you deal with the times where you don’t feel have a funny way of striking you. Inspiration usually sneaks up on you from behind; you can’t always just expect it. In the ‘down’ times, the ‘dry’ times, the most powerful tool is gratitude. Focus on what you can be grateful for, the opportunities you’ve had, the things you have done, and not the rest is just in the actual doing, and not in the waiting. In the words of Chuck Close: ‘Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work.’

NUDE ATTITUDE Bralettes have been a staple piece in our wardrobe for quite sometime color through our shirts, or showing some skin, but still having that sexy teaser look. how to:

style culottes What emerged as a slightly questionable trend reserved only for the most fashion-forward – as many do – has grown into a ridiculously chic summer staple seen on the likes of Victoria Beckham, Olivia Palermo, and Rihanna. Culottes are having a serious moment, and with surprising functionality can be styled to suit whatever is on your agenda with virtually zero effort. For a work appropriate look swap pencil skirts and pants for a dressier pair of culottes; essentially a combination of the two, allowing you to get away with not changing any other part of your daily work look. Structured and pleated styles look opposed to the less shapely culottes. Silk blouses, blazers and heels all pair exceptionally well with this bottom piece, making them effortlessly trendy.

For a night out stick with structured style culottes, or experiment with leather ones. Coupled with a strapless crop or slinky tank along with stilettos and bold jewelry create an incredibly fashion-forward look. If a cover-up is necessary throw on a cropped moto jacket to balance out the dressiness of your bottom half while keeping it casual up top. fun with these innovative pantskirt-crossed bottoms and to not age-old rule of keeping it tight on bottom and loose on top or vice versa; the best part about your new favorite piece is the ability to break the rules and look fab doing it. If you’re looking for a more casual or simply a pair less structured and billowier. Accompanied by a pair of sliders, tees, and oversized sweaters makes them the perfect piece for days off, ensuring a cool trick here is to let go of avoiding oversized and shapeless pieces, which is ultimately what makes this look so chic and innovative.

BEACH BABY

Sick of winter? Join the club. Around this time every year people start fantasizing about sun, sand, and surf. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you actually get to live this dream. Don’t complicate a relaxing vacation by trying to stick to your regular beauty routine. Below are the only products you will need to pack in your suitcase. Writer: Ashley Guay

Boscia Tsubaki Deep Hydration Sleeping Mask $42, sephora.com This product was designed to deeply hydrate and leave your skin feeling “baby-soft” while you sleep. Lather some on before your flight (flying can leave your skin feeling dry), at night, and even on days when your skin needs a morning douse of moisture from being constantly in the sun.

SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN! Although you probably are already aware, the importance of a great sunscreen can't be stressed enough, especially for your face. I’m loyal to Neutrogena Dry Touch Sunscreen SPF 30 (available at Shoppers Drug Mart). Its lightweight base doesn’t leave your skin feeling oily.

48 I VCV MAGAZINE I SUMMER 2015

Benefit Cosmetics BADgal Waterproof Mascara $26, sephora.com A great mascara is key for vacations because it’s one of the only makeup products you should be wearing. BADgal is known for giving lashes drama by curling and lengthening every lash. The waterproof formula will ensure it’s not running down your face after your dip in the ocean.

A BRIGHT LIP STAIN Think lipstains with a coral or even an orange tinge. You’re going to be tan and pinkish colours will make your lips pop. I’m partial to Revlon Colourburst Matte Balm #245 Audacious (available at Shoppers Drug Mart) it contains a special nourishing formula that hydrates lips and it stays put through many margaritas.

LEAVE YOUR BLOW DRYER AT HOME We buy products to give us “beachy” hair in the middle of winter so why not take advantage when you’re actually at the beach? Shampoo and condition your hair like normal and then add a smoothing serum and some oil. If you have curly hair, check out Aveda Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight ($26, aveda.com) which naturally relaxes your curl with use and won’t cause it to frizz with the humidity.

If you have straight hair, try Be Curly Curl Enhancer ($7.50-24, aveda.com) to enhance curls and fight frizz. When applying both products rub some Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil ($27, aveda.com) on the ends of your hair to protect them from the heat and sun. Then skip the blow dryer and sit outside to air dry.

cities. But I need to focus closer to home, my hope is in the near future to open a boutique in Vancouver. I love Vancouver and I have my sister and her family there – it would be a win/win for me. 5. HOW WOULD YOU EXPLAIN TO SOMEONE HOW TO DECORATE WITH FASHION BOOKS? (FASHION DECORATING FOR DUMMIES) typography beautiful in its own right ceiling. I have a large library at home, today with all the technology, online magazines, blogs and tumbler I still want to be able to have something tactile. I love creating gallery walls and I am not afraid to exacto out a frame it. I have done a gallery wall in with it, it gets a fabulous reaction. 6. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SEASON FOR FASHION AND WHY? 1. WHO’S YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER AND WHY?

Ryan Korban, His esthetic is very similar to mine. His interiors are captivating, exotic, romantic and very sexy. He doesn’t use a lot of color which really appeals to me. He is self-made, untrained, pushing boundaries and easy on the eyes – I can’t deny that always helps.

The two are so closely related they’re really one in the same. Someone

well can tell you I am not overly fond

2. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN LBV? When doing interiors I found I was having trouble sourcing, I couldn’t felt that Kelowna was lagging in the Design and Fashion world and so I thought I would be my own source and open up my own boutique. We carry six lines in the boutique that we being able to introduce customers and clients to fabulous products not being carried anywhere else in the Country. Opening LBV really was the perfect solution for me.

buying and I said well I do. It would stand to reason that If you’re good at interior design you are going to be good at fashion. Tom Ford is the perfect example, he graduated Parsons with a degree in architecture but pursued Fashion. What happens in the interior design world ripples in to the fashion world and vice versa. The two are so intertwind as both encompass fabrics, textures, patterns, balancing proportion and detail. The connection between materials and the story. It feels natural to me to incorporate fashion into my interiors.

7. YOUR FAVOURITE TREND RIGHT NOW? l am always drawn to classic design. example, it’s as timeless as it gets what you pair it with…but you cannot improve on it as it is iconic. Some things are so perfect and there is no changing perfection. I try to steer away from trends because essentially they are “hot for the moment” In my mind a fabulous interior or wardrobe possesses elements of what is current mixed with pieces that have stood the test of time.

4. ANY PLANS TO OPEN UP ANYWHERE ELSE? world muhaha!!!. I would love to open Scotland as they are such amazing

8. WHO’S YOUR FASHION ICON? Diana Vreeland , She was a strong woman, with grit, grace and fabulous style. She celebrated uniqueness and was an important part of the evolution of fashion. She had her entire apartment decorated by Billy Baldwin in Red…and although Red is not my favourite colour, I greatly admire such a bold commitment to what she loved. 9.
