The ocean front Imperial Suite at Kahala Resort
HISTORICALLY, KAHALA WAS WHERE THE HAWAIIAN ROYALTY RESIDED. The large estates provided the echelon with a hidden paradise. Geographically, the area offers breathtaking ocean views and cool breezes from the mountain ranges. If you are lucky enough to live on the white sandy shores of Kahala beach, you may catch a glimpse of a celebrity or model tanning. Currently, the neighborhood has become famous among the affluent and is considered one of the most luxurious and exclusive neighborhoods in Hawaii. Conveniently located at the base of Diamond Head and only a few minutes to Waikiki offering access to some of the best restaurants, shopping and experiences in Hawaii. One popular destination is the Kahala Resort which sits on the south-east of Oahu and offers a fine dining restaurant, award-winning spa, and private suites that sleep on a secluded white sand beach. The privacy of the location provides guests with a tranquil vacation away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu. Hightea is served at the Veranda and is a popular place for women to be seen in the latest fashion.

THIS SUMMER, fashionable women of Kahala will be adorned in hand crafted, one-of-a-kind jewelry made with diamonds and Tahitian pearls. Resort wear, linen and light fabrics are encouraged during all seasons of the year, but especially during summer months. For men, slim-cut and tailored “Aloha Shirts” are a must have. Whether drinking fine whisky at the Waialae Country Club after golf or having dinner at Arancino, the gentleman of Kahala will be sporting their custom crafted Panama hats from Newt at the Royal which range from $3,000 USD - $12,000 USD. Taryn Hatcher, Private Commissioned Jewelry (price upon request)
THE SONY OPEN,
which is held at the course at the Waialae Country Club offers a first hand view of professional golf at it’s finest. The event, which is held annually in January, attracts the sports most elite. The club itself is home to members who maintain reputations in Hawaii’s business and professional realm.
Hawaii’s isolation and steady climate provides the perfect weather almost year round and attracts Canadian visitors escaping from the harsh winters and mundane summers. The growing city of Honolulu as a city is considered one of America’s “best places to live” by private polls, yet Kahala has always been one of the “best places to live”. ■ Dana Lyons, Ohia Lehua Avanti Shirts

JAZZ
ALL THAT By Lisa Manfield
C
anada Day long weekend to most people means donning something red and white, partaking in some outdoor eats, and perhaps watching the fireworks. For me, it’s also always included some time lounging on a blanket at David Lam Park surrounded by the sultry sounds of jazz floating lightly on the summer breeze. This summer, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival marks its 33rd year with performances starting June 22 and running through July 1. It’s become the biggest music festival in B.C., featuring 1,800 artists and 300 concerts at 35 indoor and outdoor venues. With over 150 free shows, it’s easy to catch some jazz in passing or to settle in for an afternoon in the park, but it’s also nice to be more intentional with your music picks. To that end, I chatted with the Jazz Fest’s co-founder and media director John Orysik to get the scoop on the hottest happenings this year.
THE FREE SHOWS If you’re interested in the Jazz Fest but aren’t sure where to begin, Orysik suggests hitting up a free concert first. “People can come, hear music without cost, see what’s going on on-stage, and then start digging deeper into genres they want to know about.” Free concerts take place downtown at Robson Square, at David Lam Park and the Roundhouse Community Centre, and on Granville Island. “One band I’m really excited to hear is Alsarah and the Nubatones,” Orysik says. “It’s Nubian pop music, originally from Sudan and now based in Brooklyn.”
THE BIG NAMES
THE TICKETED SHOWS If you’re ready to slap down some cash for a ticketed concert, Orysik says there’s something for everyone. For those who love to dance, try the Spanish Harlem Orchestra at the Vogue. “If you’re into salsa, they’re at the top of the game,” he says. “We’ve eliminated a number of rows at the Vogue for dancing.” If you prefer something more traditional, check out the Roberta Gambarini Quartette at Pyatt Hall. Meanwhile, the Imperial series offers something that might appeal to younger audiences. “Cherry Glazerr, Knower, and Sons of Kemet from England -- one of hottest saxophonists in the world leads this band. It’s a great portal for the younger demographic.” And if you want something more casual, you can head to Frankie’s Jazz Club, a venue operated year-round by the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society, for some after-party jam sessions. “All the musicians from the festival come there to jam,” Orysik says. “You’ll get to see a once-in-a-lifetime performance.” Whatever you choose, you’re guaranteed an international, cutting edge musical experience. “What makes jazz such a great musical genre is that it has absorbed so many cultural elements from around the world,” says Orysik. “Not only do we represent traditional jazz, but also the cutting edge. Apart from entertaining people, part of it is to create epiphanies. The festival is designed to lead to deeper investigations of music.” ■
If you’re into big-name artists, you should start with the festival’s Marquee series. Feature artists include Robert Plant and The Sensational Space Shifters, Macy Grey, and Kamasi Washington. “Washington represents the younger demographic,” Orysik says. “He’s coming out of the jazz tradition but is very much conversant with the hip hop scene and brings this heady mix together.” 20

very month, Boulevard sends photographer and chief Alfonso Arnold to scan our wonderful city to find true and passionate artists to interview, snap, and feature. This month brings us to Leone (one of Vancouver’s top luxury boutiques) to feature Boulevard’s Fashion Stylist, the fabulous and marvelous Sarah D’Arcey! Boulevard: Welcome Sarah! It’s so exciting to feature a member of our production team for this issue. Can you give us a bit of background about yourself? Sarah: My career really began during my time in Toronto while I was in fashion school at George Brown College! I interned for Dress for Success (DFS) and there I found my passion for styling! Legendary Photographer, Bill Cunningham is famous for saying, “fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.” My time at DFS taught me that what we wear translates into how we feel. Helping women look and feel confident in their own skin is something that is extremely rewarding. Boulevard: You have been able to grow from editorial styling to dressing for red carpet events. Is one more difficult than the other? Sarah: I always say that there isn’t a red carpet that I don’t love! The difference between editorial and red carpet is there is no room for error in fit and how the garment photographs. In editorial, you can adjust angles, pin and clip so there is more leeway. My first red carpet client was actress Steph Song for the Canadian Screen Awards last year and it

was so special that she wore local Vancouver designer, House of Bahareh. As well, Elle McKinnon from Wonder the Movie wore custom Myoo Couture from Berlin to the LA premiere in November. Boulevard: If you were to give your top 5 tips to looking fabulous daily, what would they be? Sarah: I am a huge fan of creating your own YOUniform! I have given styling workshops for the Fairmont Chateau Whistler am will give the same advice as in my workshop: 1. Quality over Quantity 2. Invest in a Tailor 3. Know your Color Palette 4. Take Care of your Skin 5. Get a Makeup Lesson Boulevard: Any present or future styling trends we should be aware of? Sarah: As a stylist. My rule is to invest more in staple items and cycle in three or four pieces a season that are trends, where you don’t invest as much! The trends I love right now for SS18 are sequins, checks, fringe and pastels. I also love this notion of carrying multiple bags, like on the Dolce and Gabbana, Chanel and Gucci runways. Boulevard: Finally, what can we expect in the near future from you? Right now, I my focus is on further developing my personal styling services so stay tuned for more! You can also catch me on set styling the next fabulous Boulevard Magazine cover! Boulevard: Thanks so much for taking the time Sarah, and we can’t wait to see your upcoming features! id-century modern meets organic glamour in this urban apartment living room with soaring ceilings and vast windows that fill the space with natural daylight. Soft plum, cool gray and both polished and oxidized brass create a serene and enchanting space for entertaining or simply relaxing.
The sexy, mysterious and uninterrupted lines of the Vamp sofa by the illustrious home décor brand KOKET sweep gracefully across the corner of this sitting area. Upholstered in a sumptuous faded plum velvet from KOKET’s textile collection, an intentionally tarnished cast brass sculpture resembling a thorn bush branch serves as a base for this alluring sofa. Falling from the ceiling, evocative of an inverted bouquet of calla lilies, KOKET’s Gia chandelier shimmers overhead. This gorgeous chandelier is composed of a bunching of hand sculpted polished brass calla lily shaped pendant lights suspended from black cords. Beneath Gia and centered between the Vamp sofa and two neutral toned contemporary upholstered lounge chairs with metal bases sits a stunning large tree stump shaped cocktail table in oxidized brass. KOKET is a US based luxury home décor brand led by Janet Morais. Highly influenced by the decorative arts and fashion, Janet brings bold and alluring designs to life. This unparalleled design sensibility is fueled by her distinct European sophistication, which she has refined since childhood. Recognized and desired around the globe by the fashion and film industries, top hospitality design projects, royalty, celebrities and beyond, KOKET’s mission is to create highly desirable empowering statement pieces. n

What’s hot in the Kitchen The kitchen is the heart of the home, and the centre of our households, where an infinite amount of meals will be created, consumed and cleaned up. We make memories in our kitchens. We fight passionately and make-up. We love, cry and hug-it-out in kitchens. Plus, a lot of families hang out in the kitchen. Kids do homework while parents cook. 26

Whatever the reason for renovating this important space — be it a quick weekend refresh or a complete gut-and-go — the end goal is the same. The kitchen must be functional through informed design and stylish. It should be a place you want to be. After all, the kitchen’s primary function is for preparing and cooking meals and many times what looks amazing in a magazine isn’t what will work in your space or for your family.
As Western Canada’s largest independent appliance retailer, Trail Appliances offers over 50 quality brands and a team of product experts who are appliance specialists. Whether you are looking to replace your appliances or to build your dream kitchen from scratch, this capable team can help you find what fits your space, and on a budget you can afford.
In our showcase kitchen renovation, Trail chose a combination of the Meile and three Sub-Zero units most suited to reflect a west coast lifestyle that includes healthy eating and entertaining.
functional
...suited to reflect a west coast lifestyle that includes healthy eating and entertaining. Keeping it Chill this Summer The Sub-Zero Built-in Freezer provides more than ample room for your summer gelato fixation with 15.3 cubic feet of space and a dry, frigid climate to guarantee your flavours stay fresh. The “max ice” feature will make you a superstar at the blender when your patio party hits its stride. Speaking of parties, the Sub-Zero Built-in 30” Wine Cooler preserves and protects up to 86 bottles of wine, and has two roomy refrigerator drawers to store your charcuterie board must-haves, like artisans cheese, olives, preserves and refreshing sparkling water and beer. Sub-Zero units are generally available with left and right swing, and stainless steel panels or custom cabinetry panels to blend seamlessly with your cabinetry. The 30” Integrated Refrigerator Column provides wellorganized room for fresh fruits and veggies from the farmers market. The magnetic door seal system locks in cold, and a microprocessor precisely controls temperatures. The crisper and deli drawers form a lowertemperature zone ideal for produce and meat.
Let's Get Cooking Gas, electric or induction? The choice is personal, though you don’t often hear of people switching from gas to electric. Trail chose the sleek and efficient Miele KM 6386 Induction Cooktop for our showcase kitchen.
Did you know that with gas you lose about 40 per cent of your heat when going from burner to pan, but with induction heat, you lose less? This stylish 5-zone cooktop can bring a pot of water to boiling faster than a gas range and has the exclusive Direct Select Plus feature that lets users easily select power settings and times. The remote handheld control for the Best Cirrus series ceiling hood ensures that your cook area is ventilated, safe and well-lit with six LED bulbs. Your smoke alarm can rest easy with this combination in your kitchen.
Baking Up Some Magic Whether you fancy yourself a foodie or are looking to recreate your favourite restaurant dish at home, a convection oven will cook faster, more evenly, brown better and save energy. Miele makes some of the world’s best known and respected convection ovens and this double stack of Pureline M Touch units — the H6880 BP convection and the DGC6800-1 steam-convection oven — are perfection. Both units come with many features, including MasterChef automatic programs and wireless roast probe. Add an ESW6880 Gourmet warming drawer and, in addition to keeping prepared dishes warm, use it to proof bread, and to defrost and slow cook meat and poultry.
magical
conVEniEnt The Convenience of EasyControl The sheer convenience of a microwave should never be underestimated. With the Miele PureLine EasyControl, everyone who spends time in your kitchen will have the power to prepare everything from popcorn to pork roast.
Time for Coffee! The kitchen is also where our most revered ritual takes place — the creation of morning coffee. For many, it’s the first thing we think of when the alarm goes off, and with the Miele CVA6805 even the “so not a morning person” can create gourmet-level java with this builtin unit. Open the ComfortDoor, fill containers with your favourite beans, water and milk, close gently, choose a single or double shot, step back and enjoy. The world of appliances is always changing, and because today’s are smarter and more complex than ever, a renovation may prove to be intimidating. Put your mind at ease and arrange to have the team at Trail Appliances meet with you and assist in designing a quality kitchen that enhances time spent in the heart of your household. n

wo decades ago, what started as a handful of DIY home repair shows on cable television ballooned into home renovations programming, and today there are entire television channels dedicated to satisfying the public’s appetite for design and renovation. It is not by accident that these programs have grown in popularity.
Home renovation is big business, and in 2017, a poll by CIBC reported half of all homeowners in British Columbia were planning to renovate over the next year. As someone about to undertake a project, either as simple as replacing out-dated kitchen cabinet doors or deciding to completely gut and upgrade the whole kitchen, knowing who to trust is often the most challenging part of the process.

Although a relative newcomer to home renovation industry, Coquitlam’s Troico Home Solutions has garnered a stellar reputation amongst homeowners, renovation, and design experts, and has received over 35 industry awards. Troico is one of the Lower Mainland’s elite Contractors of Vancouver and to date has won over 35 industry awards for excellence including the GVHBA 2018 Ovation Awards for ‘Best Kitchen $75K & Under’ and ‘Best Bathroom $35K & Under.’
In April, Richter proudly revealed a beautiful new showroom which showcases not only their impeccable craft custom millwork but the latest in total home renovation trends with custom cabinets, countertops, plumbing and lighting fixtures, home automation, and appliances. The entire showroom was created from scratch using modern technology and a little bit of traditional handcrafted artistry so what you see firsthand is what you will receive when you collaborate with Troico.
Troico opened its doors in 2012 and in the six years following, owner Mike Richter has grown the business to employ over 40 full-time employees which includes an in-house team of three award-winning designers who can turn your vision into an amazing design plan.
As a homeowner contemplating a kitchen renovation or a contractor looking for guidance on a significant project, Troico is the place to start. In addition to quality kitchen cabinets and custom millwork, Troico is now a proud retailer of Wolf Sub*Zero appliances. The new showroom
includes iconic gas ranges, a modern induction cooktop, and wall ovens that are all conveniently programmable with an app. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the Sub*Zero fridges (fully paneled and integrated models), the brands’ new modular separate fridge, freezer, and wine storage items, as well as standalone models in stainless steel and glass doors. Recently, Troico became an authorized dealer for Control 4, a full home automation system that allows you to control your home with smart-home technology. As part of their commitment to meeting the needs of their customers, Richter and his team are continuously on the look-out for new options and technology which adds value not only your home but for convenience and peace of mind. Responsible manufacturers are committed to preserving the environment for future generations and making customers homes healthy for their families. That is why Troico uses only CARB 1 & 2 compliant materials in the manufacturing of all their products, ensuring there are no harmful VOCs or off-gassing on any of their products. Troico reduces their footprint by cutting waste, reducing energy use, and conserving resources. Everything from wood chips to computer chips and up to 90% of the waste produced in their manufacturing processes is reused or recycled, avoiding landfills. n

‘need to know’ appliance trends
By Mark Eglington
A
rt, connectivity and healthier living have all entered the appliance world in a big way: Fiat created a bar fridge in the shape of its iconic cars. Dolce & Gabbana brightened up the kitchen with artful SMEGs, my new fridge keeps my food fresher and my phone is learning to talk to it. Bigger isn’t better in the laundry room and wise advice suggests taking a second look at washing soap and dryer sheets. Let’s take a look at trends I’m that’ll make us happier, healthier and more eco-friendly.
34
B O U L E VA R D
TREND 1: SMALL APPLIANCES High fashion meets design. Dolce & Gabbana mixes it up in the kitchen with SMEG and a stunning appliance collection called ‘Sicily is my Love. Last year’s “Made in Italy” project saw 100 unique handpainted SMEG refrigerators created for clients around the world. Each retro special edition of the FAB28 refrigerator is a collectible work of art with floral and fruit motives, medieval knights and battle scenes. Now, the same team has created toasters, citrus juicers, coffee machines, kettles, blenders, stand mixers and slow juicers. The folks at Fiat have also brought us their own sexy little accessory that’s bright red, part car and part bar fridge. A hot seller this season for the guy who has everything. Also, Gorenje has followed suit with its own stylish VW fridge.

TREND 2: COOKING Smart cooks need a smart kitchen. Can you talk to your fridge and buy kitchen appliances instead of art? Seems so. Liebherr’s new Monolith refrigerator comes with a SmartDeviceBox linked to your smartphone or tablet. And you can see what’s in your fridge from anywhere you are connected — it’s a whole new way for us to be clever in the kitchen. And, speaking of clever, in a world where we are increasingly connected, our fridges will soon let us build grocery lists, check on best before dates and receive alerts when we’re running low. How smart is that!

TREND 3: LAUNDRY
TREND 4: ENVIRONMENT
Staying out of hot water in the laundry room. Greater washer capacity is not all it’s cracked up to be nor is it eco-friendly. Think of three things: a seven or eight kilogram wash capacity — that’s the size of a full laundry basket and great for duvets — eco-friendly detergent like Forever New and plenty of time for sudsing up and going slowly round and round. Some machines now have sanitary cycles that kill bacteria with a minimum of three rinses per load. Generally, people are full of it — soap, that is. The wrong detergent will over-foam, stay in the clothes and wear out your machine.
Green with Envy. Dryer sheets are full of chemicals that aren’t great for your skin or your machine. Instead, use dryer balls or fabric softener to reduce static and stop creasing. Many top-loading washing machines are water guzzlers — more than 100 litres of water per load. Concerned about saving the planet? European machines consume about 50 per cent less water and a lifespan of 15 to 20 years. Look for controlled water intake, temperature and rinse performance. All better for mother earth!
environment
TREND 5: QUIETER THAN EVER Silence is golden. The laundry pair and dishwasher you buy should be silent. When it comes to fridges, pay attention to European sleek-flush installations versus freestanding units where the compressors and vents in the front of the unit can be like speakers, noisily broadcasting your fridge’s activity. Also watch for specially hinges for gentle door closing.

refrigeration TREND 6: DURABILITY Laundry machines that are built to last: Don’t be fooled by novelty colours that look chic and shiny. Think performance. Everything lasts longer when it’s washed gently on a slower, softer cycle. Think cold for first fills, a stainless steel drum and five-year warranties on parts and labour. And, when it comes to drying you want to avoid baking and opt for a slow, tumble with warm air that blows through the clothes. Crease-free is pretty well guaranteed when the last 12 minutes uses only cold air. Set the timer for 3 am and it’ll be ready before you head to work. Now that’s convenient!
38
doesn’t introduce heat. Glass shelving in doors can ensure that the overall temperature isn’t compromised and there is no plastic off-gassing. Concerned about truly green design and manufacturing? Ask whether parts are labelled for future recycling.
TREND 7: CLEAN REFRIGERATION
Moisture rules. When it comes to state-of-the-art refrigeration and helping your food last longer, you want to escape the cold dry air that causes spoilage. Separate airflows in your freezer and fridge are a must, as well as really well-designed, precise temperature control in storage compartments to prevent plastic off-gassing. Look for patented BioCool or BioFresh features that help keep food fresh longer.
Green means clean so meeting or exceeding Energy Star ratings is normal. But today it is cooling performance that counts when it comes to being green in refrigeration. Wellplaced LEDs create a cool and uniform light source that
Less is more. Razzle-dazzle won’t take better care of your food. There’s a lot of “good tech” in the pipeline for inventory management. Check for easy-to-read LED displays of the inside temperature, user-friendly intuitive design
B O U L E VA R D
durability
that supports temperature settings and an alarm to sound when the door is left open. Two compressors are better than one. Perhaps the naughtiest little secret in the fridge biz is the single compressor. You need two speed-controlled compressors — one in the fridge and another in the freezer — to ensure freshness, performance for energy consumption and quiet operation. The best compressors will “gear down” to a low-energy overnight and “gear up” during peak use. It’s about “usable space”. Cubic-foot comparisons aren’t useful. Instead, assess the functional space. Seek out fridges with gallon storage in the door, adjustable split shelves and thin sidewall insulation. Good-bye freezer burn which is the result of fluctuations in temperature due to cold air rushing out when the door is opened. With proper refrigeration technology the moisture/humidity is expelled.
Quick chill for freshness. Set a “super-cool” feature before you shop to seal in nutrients and flavour. Return and your fridge will have dropped its temperature to one degree Celsius and be ready for new foods. Upgrading appliances is a sure fire way to bring out the “home chef” in all of us and also increase the value of a home. There’s lots of new things on the horizon when it comes to technology, connectivity and convenience, but don’t get lost in the razzle-dazzle. Just like the European cars, state-of the art appliances are built to last. Familyfriendly and easy-to-use are the hallmarks of today’s European manufacturers. Mark Eglington is the President of Euro-line Appliances and is the son of a South African who taught him how to sell the very best European appliances to Canadians. n

HOME AS A JOURNEY, NOT THE DESTINATION:
L
ife truly is about the journey, not the destination. Though your home may technically be a destination, you should look to build a home that suits the journey of your life. Looking at “The Beachcomber” by Forge Properties, 2018 Ovation Award Winner for Best Room: New Construction and Best Special Feature: New or Renovated, you see a home built with purpose; bringing together the homeowner’s hobbies, passion and family favourites.
42
B O U L E VA R D
The family and owners of The Beachcomber are lifelong collectors and eclectic treasure hunters who wanted to share their passion with friends and family in a finely tailored interactive environment. Every design decision focused on creating spaces that bring together the family’s love of art, music, literature, film and antiquing. For example, this home showcases a nautically themed study and master-bedroom, a Parisian-styled attic library and record-room, a classic theatre and arcade, and a climate-controlled comic vault with almost a century of history on display.
This family loves treasure hunting through antique markets and garage sales; this remains an ongoing delight for the owners and their children to share to this date. Every piece within the home has a story and the design mandate was to embrace their collected heirlooms. Cory Saran, Principal and Owner of Forge Properties notes that “Attics, are a brilliant spot to feature the things you love. They’re cozy, have the ability to be architecturally dramatic and really embrace the use of display shelving for books and collected artifacts. At the Beachcomber, we added the library and record room above the garage.” Saran continues, “You don’t have to spend a lot of money to achieve design success. Much of it comes down to spatial planning and investing in some but not all your fits and finishes. By incorporating a thematic use of natural materials, engineered-oak flooring, camel leather upholstery, and black accents throughout, each area flows effortlessly into the next.” Believe it or not, your happiness can be linked to your home. That does not mean we all need “Live, laugh, love” decals on
our walls. It means that we should pay attention to our home and incorporate the things that breathe life back into us, the things that help up appreciate the journey and help us relish in the moments that bring us joy. Built by Sareen Development, this two-storey home includes four bedrooms, and four and a half bathrooms in 3,854 square feet of living space. Upon stepping into this airy, elegant and bright house, the entrance hall’s soaring, 20-foot-high ceiling combined with an open floor plan and many windows provide an instant sense of light and spaciousness. Warm and comfortable earth tones unify everything, while classic embellishments such as black, grey and white add a calmness and luxury to the décor. To the right of the entrance hall sits a spacious drawing room. A circle of white- and champagnecoloured sofas form a comfortable conversation space. Light streams through giant windows, which offer views of the beautiful garden. Open the doors that lead outside, and a sitting area in the garden naturally becomes one with this space. To the left is a dining room, featuring a simplistic and angular brown dining table paired with sandcoloured dining chairs. A textured bronze cabinet and a small amount of gold accents bring a sense of luxury into this otherwise simple space.
Moving in from the entrance brings one into an open space shared by the living room and kitchen. In the living room, a grey leather sofa set and light brown single sofa chair face a television and fireplace. Echoing the angular design of the house, this room features never-ending square shapes that resemble boxes — the aforementioned formal dining table, the television wall in the living room, fireplace and low cabinet shelves. These square shapes are organized like patchwork into a clean and modern design. There’s also a door here that leads outside and once opened, the indoor and outdoor spaces align, creating a great space for entertaining. Ascend the suspended stairs in the entrance hall and arrive at the second floor bedrooms. The stair design is extremely clean and modern — the steps match the light brown of the floors, with frameless glass fencing and wooden rails attached only

The master, which faces the garden, features three massive windows that occupy an entire wall. The big pine and cypress trees outside seem almost to extend their green branches into the room. A spacious, walk-in closet fulfils the needs of two occupants, and a long, duo-sink counter in the bathroom allows both individuals to simultaneously enjoy the space. The angular bathtub extends the main theme of the house, while the spacious shower, separated by glass, is luxurious and convenient. Each of the other bedrooms has unique characteristics. An additional bathroom on this floor is lit with a sunroof. With the simple press of a button, the sunroof opens, guaranteeing sufficient lighting and allowing fresh air to flow through the room. Location, Activities & Sense of Community
P R E D AT O R R I D G E Written by Claire Newell Photography by Jozef Povazan
T R AV EL
Within minutes of being at Predator Ridge I knew that this
was a special place.
What stood out to me
most were three things:
the location, the yearround activities, and the strong sense of community.
P
L O C AT I O N
redator Ridge is a 1,200 acre community nestled in the sunny Okanagan Valley. Sitting among spectacular mountains, lakes and grasslands, the region offers more than 2,000 hours of sunshine each year --- all of which is reason enough to see why this is a growing community. There are even more aspects that make Predator Ridge so attractive, especially if you enjoy an active lifestyle. With over 35 kilometers of biking and hiking trails, a lavender meadow, picnic areas and 2 golf courses, you’ll never run out of things to do. However, the convenience of its location is the icing on the cake. It’s just 15 minutes away from 2 lakes, 30 minutes to Kelowna International Airport, 15 minutes to Vernon, and 20 minutes to 8 wineries. It is also located just minutes away from the amazing KurSpa at Sparkling Hill and guests and home owners of Predator Ridge get exclusive access to the spa and special day rates for use of the spa’s saunas and pools. In a nutshell, Predator ridge has everything someone could want for a rich lifestyle, four-season outdoor activity and nearby comforts of urban living --- with none of the stressors of the city.
ACTIVITIES To say that Predator Ridge is an active community is an understatement. I know that many people equate Predator Ridge to it’s awardwinning golf courses. However, after seeing this community firsthand, I was simply amazed by the by endless amount of activities available. I now understand why Predator Ridge is one of Canada’s top resort communities – there is literally something for everyone. Homeowners and resort guests have access a state-of-the-art fitness
center, offering 20+ classes per week, a spa, a 25m lap pool, outdoor pools, hot tubs, three outdoor yoga platforms, tennis courts, pickle ball courts and a basketball court… to name a few. For dog lovers there’s a dog park, pet-friendly patios and pet parking. For foodies there is a market offering general groceries, fresh produce, local delicacies, local wines and beer, plus two restaurants: Pallino’s Italian themed restaurant and the Range Lounge & Grill. Predator Ridge is also very quickly becoming one of the top biking destinations in the Okanagan. There are all kinds of trails from easy to difficult on the more than 13kms of trails on the property, including a connector trail linking to the 40km+ of trails in Ellison Provincial Park. There are also biking trails accessing wineries and the Okanagan Rail Trail. Most homeowners have bikes, but for those who don’t you can rent them.
T R AV EL
While I was walking around the well-equipped fitness center I realized that this serves as a hub for a wide array of activities and events. One weekly class really appealed to me, it starts with a two-hour hike, includes a yoga class on a cedar platform overlooking Lake Okanagan and ends with a glass or two of local wine. Sign me up! It also occurred to me while I was at Predator Ridge that during the long days of spring and summer, it would be possible to play a morning round of golf, bike to a farm stall for produce picked that morning and take in a paddle boarding lesson on breathtaking Kalamalka Lake. At the end of all that, you would still have time to enjoy the sunset with a glass of award-winning local wine in hand.
COMMUNITY Predator Ridge’s location and activities are outstanding, but what stood out to me again is it’s incredibly strong sense of community. There are over 1000 annual programmed events for homeowners to gather, get healthy and build social relationships. Predator Ridge is so much more than just a beautiful place to live, it is truly a
community. Homeowners get the perfect mix of privacy paired with a ton of social opportunities, where they can really get to know their neighbors. I also took a look at some of the upcoming events happening at Predator Ridge. There are so many on the list! Some were very unique, like a Terrarium making class or the wine & rustic sign night. Many are scheduled weekly like Music on the Patio (live music performances by local artists, end of June to early September); Friday Night
Flights (wine tastings with local wineries, end of June to early September), Cooking Classes (in the kitchen classroom, from November to March), Group Hikes (from mid May to end of September), and weekly Wine & Yoga nights (on one of the outdoor yoga platforms). Plus, there are a number of great events that are scheduled throughout the year, like wine pairing dinners, special event brunches (including Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving) plus an annual rodeo and large scale live music concert. There is absolutely no way you could ever be bored as a resident at Predator Ridge!
There is absolutely no way you could ever be bored as a resident at Predator Ridge!
CLAIRE’S CONCLUSION You would be hard pressed to find another community like Predator Ridge anywhere in Canada. It is a special place with its 1,200 acre backyard, active amenities, and vibrant year-round community. Now I understand why this special place is growing so quickly! n

COV ER STO RY
a small glimpse Claire Newell Written By Arezoo Aliperti
She believes it is her passion for what she does that drives her.
A
s we board the flight to Kelowna for a scheduled photo shoot at Predator Ridge resort, I have an opportunity to converse with Claire Newell. It was heartwarming to see after all the years of being in the travel business and flying constantly for work, the last text she sends are to her husband and her children before switching off her phone. As the flight gets ready for take off, we start talking about what drives her and why she chose travel business. She explains that her path from high school was very different; in fact, upon graduation, she knew she wanted to become lawyer. After completing her degree, her parents took her on trip as a graduation gift.
COV ER STO RY Even though she had travelled with her family often, this particular trip changed the course of her life. It was on that trip she discovered a passion for travel and educating others about what to expect. Upon their return, she approached her parents and with their support opened her own travel business, launching Travel Best Bets. The first four years were toughest, she says. It was no easy task to start a business right out of university and in a totally different field. But working seven days a week as a one-woman show didn’t discourage her — it made her more hungry. She began hiring staff, making sure she had the right people in place to grow and move her business forward. Those people are still with her to this day. This year marks the 25th anniversary of her business
and it is a testament to her passion and her fairness that her staff has stayed with her all these years. When the tragedy of 9/11 happened, travelling was put on the back burner for many people. Fear of flying prevented regular travellers from booking flights, and as a result many travel agencies couldn’t survive and had to close their doors. But Claire was even more determined to educate the public about travelling safely, and her regular TV spot — which continues to this day — gave her a platform to do so. But of course this wasn’t the only obstacle she faced. In the age of technology and the internet, online booking has started pulling people away from travel agencies. give up, things she has, in turn, conveyed to her children. These days she wears many hats — wife, mother, daughter, friend, president of her own travel company, a business woman in a man’s world for 25 years and counting. She makes sure none of her roles suffer and it shows in her marriage of 22 years and friendships of over 30 years. She believes in treating people the way she wants to be treated. She is humble, giving and yet complex. Since she was a child, she was told to help others and be mindful of people in need. She continues helping multiple charities and non profit organizations without looking for recognition or the spotlight. She is proud of the fact that her company is owned by a woman in BC and employees many other women. This remains a rarity. Claire credits her great team for her longevity in business and her family for her success in life. She believes it is her passion for what she does that drives her and doesn’t feel it is “work.” She is regular contributor to many magazines, television, radio stations and has written a couple of travel books. Juggling all these activities and having a personal life is quite astonishing, but she manages to do it all.

We touch down and as soon as we able to turn our phones back on the first text is to her husband and children, letting them know she has arrived. A small glimpse into Claire Newell’s life makes you respect and admire her for what she has achieved. She has remained humble and practices “paying it forward” at every opportunity. Whether that means heading to the beach in your new romper and sandals or pulling up a chair on your local patio for a much needed cool one, your skin needs special attention to ensure it is protected. Minimal / Classic / Bohemian / Urban With the royal nuptials of Meghan and Harry still fresh in everyone’s minds, we ponder the ever-changing dynamic of marriage. While love may be eternal, there is a new generation who is celebrating their passion on their terms. They find love online, boundaries of class, race, gender, and faith are transcended and, their ceremonies are no longer following a set script but reflect the individuality of the couple. In the ‘Lifetime of Lifestyle' collection, Rado Switzerland has joined forces with renowned trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort to explore how the wristwatch fits into the shifting zeitgeist of love and marriage in these modern times.

Chan Hon Goh

ver the telephone comes a gentle and pleasant female voice, soft and smooth, intensely feminine. The owner of this voice is Chan Hon Goh, director of Canada’s Goh Ballet Academy, and the first ever ethnically Chinese principal dancer in The National Ballet of Canada.
Chan Hon Goh’s path in ballet might seem predictable. She was born in a ballet family — her father, Choo Chiat Goh, was a dancer with the Central Ballet of China and gained immense popularity there in the‘60s, while her mother, Lin Yee Goh, was also a principal dancer in the Central Ballet of China. It would seem logical for family of ballet dancers to raise Chan Hon Goh as a ballet dancer as well, but it did not actually occur in this way. Choo Chiat Goh immigrated to Canada in 1976 and founded the Goh Ballet Academy, teaching ballet to children. By the time Chan Hon Goh arrived in Canada, she was already eight years old and up to that point had never learned ballet. Instead, she had started learning the piano at the age of three. “They wanted me to become a concert pianist,” says Chan Hon Goh.

talented, and paired with a great teacher like her father, she won an award at Switzerland’s Prix de Lausanne International Competition of Dance at the age of 16, despite having only started learning ballet at the age of 11.
But young Chan Hon Goh was solely dedicated to ballet and felt wronged, saying to her father one day, “I am also your student. I also work very hard and use all my efforts and energies to learn. Why is it that you purposely ignore me in the classroom?”
A year later, she won another award at the UK’s Royal Academy of Dance Examinations. After graduating from high school in 1988, Chan Hon Goh was accepted into The National Ballet of Canada and quickly received the opportunity to dance solos, becoming second soloist in 1990 and first soloist by 1992. In 1994, she became principal dancer — the first ethnically Chinese dancer in the company.
From that time onwards, Choo Chiat Goh and his wife understood Chan Hon Goh’s passion and dedication towards ballet, and began to seriously appraise her physical abilities and potentials. Undeniably, she was

Finally, on May 31, 2009 at Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, Chan Hon Goh performed a number from Giselle with the National Ballet of Canada, and waved farewell to the stage. Leaving the stage behind did not mean that she left ballet. She moved back to Vancouver and became the director of Goh Ballet Academy, dedicating herself to developing performances for the Academy, including a massive production of The Nutcracker, which has garnered much praise since its premiere in 2009. Now, she’s busied herself with rehearsing the famous Cinderella, in celebration of Goh Ballet’s 40th anniversary, with performances at Vancouver’s The Centre on June 1 and 2. “I’m busy in both my personal and work lives — and I love being busy. Though Robert Plant has returned to the Welsh borders, he retains the sensibility – and the soul – of an itinerant troubadour. His diverse musical points of reference stand out like pins on a map, from Austin, Texas to Timbuktu, Mali. Legendary dobro/lap steel player and vocalist Jerry Douglas has a whopping 14 Grammy Awards to his credit. His next-level mastery can be heard in O Brother Where Art Thou? Douglas has absorbed and transcended the conventions of bluegrass, country, jazz, blues, and rock. Enter the store off West Georgia, through the golden falcon head adorned doors, and soon you will realize that there is no level of excellence that exceeds the items that now surround you.
