To say that as a society we are fascinated with excellence would be an understatement. When it comes to travel, some of life’s greatest journeys are pilgrimages to witness masterpieces of art and architecture in London, Paris and Rome. We can spend years dreaming of a day spent at the Louvre or gazing in awe at Michelangelo’s brilliance at the Sistine Chapel. So what must it be like to spend your day not just observing a masterpiece but being wholly enveloped in it?

On the southernmost tip of Okanagan Lake, a spectacular property offers just that. Designed and constructed as a modern castle, the three-storey house on Penticton’s Vancouver Avenue is built like a fortress with concrete and steel construction. Yet, behind the gleaming modern facade lies a home draped in luxury, designed and overseen by Chrissy Cottrell, principal at Curated Home By Chrissy & Co.

“It was one of the most complicated projects we’ve had to execute. There’s no room for forgiveness with open steel beam construction,” says Chrissy, explaining the challenges of designing a concrete and steel fortress.

Chrissy and her team worked to balance the competing energies throughout the home: masculine and feminine, modern and trad-

itional, and industrial construction balanced with European artistry. Guests entering the front door are immediately immersed in this story of balance—slabs of green Verde marble float on a steel stringer alongside a wall with soaring moulding detail. The glass railings provide a clear view of the second floor and its softly-illuminated white steel beams above the grand piano. The foyer’s intricate marble mosaic floor gives way to a walnut parquet inspired by Scotland’s Skibo Castle, leading to the practical-yet-stunning glass tube elevator.

On the right is a 250-year-old gold leaf mirror from Paris leaning against custom black wallpaper with an abstract design hand painted in gold leaf paint. Two expansive picture windows open onto what the floor plans call a garage, although it is better described as a showroom.

A Verde and Marquina marble checkerboard pattern surrounds the white luxury sports car, which spins on a turntable in the centre of the room. A circular Christopher Boots chandelier illuminates the prized car from above. A fully stocked bar cabinet provides cocktail service following a day spent at the Area 27 Motorsports Club. It’s a stunning showcase for the car enthusiast’s greatest treasure.

大理石棋盤圖案圍繞著白色豪華跑車，也是整個空間的中心點。Christopher Boots的圓形吊燈從上方照亮這輛豪車。 想像在第27區賽車俱樂部度過一天後，在豐富的酒吧櫃享受一杯雞尾酒。這是汽車發燒友最大的財富，也是最令人驚 嘆的地方。

The first floor is rounded off with a tastefully appointed guest suite complete with an en suite, walkin closet and private deck. Finally, at the end of the dramatically lit hallway, the expansive, black-walled home gym allows the view of Okanagan Lake to take centre stage.

The primary suite is located at the end of the second floor, with magnificent sliding glass walls that open onto a large balcony overlooking the lake. The bed is set against a romantic and moody floral wallpaper, adding a touch of femininity to balance the heavy steel beams along the ceiling. A pair of curved lavender sofas add a touch of sumptuous elegance to the room.

The spectacular white marble floor flows through to the en suite, where no expense is spared. Black Nero Marquina marble lines the walls, and a whimsical Fornasetti Nuvolette cloud wallpaper adorns the ceiling.

As Chrissy explains, “With the movement in the marble, we felt the space warranted having more visual interest. We wanted the owners to experience being in the tub and feeling like the sky playfully extends in from the outside.”

While the double shower is a must-have luxury, the side-by-side soaker bathtubs are truly opulent. Chrissy says the twin baths create an intimate experience while still allowing a sense of your own space. If that weren’t enough, you can take in a romantic

The splendour continues on the third floor, where natural light illuminates the great room from every direction. Okanagan Valley views are visible through every window, but the sliding glass wall to the north is particularly captivating. The third-storey height gives the impression of sailing along the lake on a luxury yacht.

“They get the best sunsets I’ve ever seen,” Chrissy says. “One of the reasons we went with the gold velvet sofa in the front living room is to echo a lot of what we would see in the early morning and the evening. The sky lights up with the most gorgeous pinks and golds.”

The gold velvet sofa is framed on a custom-designed-and-created wool rug in a stunning green malachite pattern. A gilded Parisian antique mirror sits atop the French marble fireplace, while plush, pink leather upholstered chairs flank the adjoining 10-seat dining table.

The chandeliers above the dining table, kitchen island and breakfast table are particularly noteworthy. Made of brass and natural quartz crystals, the light fixtures are works of art from Christopher Boots. The lighting designer’s work has been featured in luxury homes and storefronts worldwide, including Hermes and Cartier.

那金色的天鵝絨沙發放置在定制的羊毛地毯上，地毯那綠 色孔雀石圖案也令人驚嘆。法式大理石壁爐的頂部是一面 鍍金的巴黎風格古董鏡，毛絨絨的粉色皮革軟墊椅則位於 相鄰的10人座餐桌兩側。

餐桌、廚房島台和早餐桌上方的吊燈，與整個空間相得益彰。

吊燈由黃銅和天然石英晶體制成，是出自Christopher Boots的藝術製作。這位照明設計師的作品已是世界各地 豪宅和奢侈品店的“常客”，包括愛馬仕和卡地亞。

The walnut parquet flooring is intricate yet timeless, adding a sense of warmth to the space. Chrissy explains that it is instrumental in marrying the modern and old-world elements within the home while also bringing in a touch of the outdoors.

“With such a panoramic view of the lake, the colour palette transitions throughout the year. In the summer, there are lots of blues and green sandy tones. Then, when the leaves change in the fall, beautiful ochre and copper tones take centre stage. It creates this gorgeous inside-to-outside experience with the colours in the floor pulling that warmth through.”

The warm flooring also provides a beautiful foundation for the bold, white marble island and Pierre Frey wallpaper in the kitchen. Chrissy had entertaining in mind while designing the kitchen, locating the sink along the back counter so that the island can become a gathering space and stage for charcuterie and champagne.

The second half of the chef’s dream kitchen is discovered through the doorway, with a collection of high-priced, top-of-the-line Gaggenau and La Cornue appliances. This is not a butler’s pantry; it is the private domain of the home chef who revels in creating delight and surprise for guests.

“It’s a space where you slide the glass door open to present dinner to your guests, and you’re proud to show it off. There are beautiful marble mosaic tiles on the floor, and marble walls showcasing a gorgeous range,” Chrissy explains. “It’s a serious workstation for anyone who really loves the experience of cooking but also wants to keep the main area mess-free.”

With such attention to detail, it’s no wonder this masterpiece is an award winner. The International Design & Architecture Awards shortlisted the property for Best Kitchen Design International and Best Luxury Property International in 2020. Chrissy and her team won top honours in the Luxury Bedroom International and Luxury Residence Canada categories.

“We want our homes to feel like functional artwork. Because at the end of the day, our lives are our biggest masterpieces. If the backdrop for the stories that we tell and the experiences and memories that we have is mediocre, how can we expect excellence in our everyday?”

屋內的胡桃木鑲木地板，為空間增添溫暖的感覺，原來在這設計上大有 講究。Chrissy解釋，胡桃木鑲木地板在大宅內帶來新舊元素的碰撞， 同時也帶來戶外氣息：“在這樣的湖景下，色調在一年中不斷轉換。夏天 是藍色和綠色的沙子色調。當秋天來臨、樹葉顏色發生變化，美麗的赭 石色和銅色又成為中心。它創造了這種從內到外的華麗體驗，地板顏色 則貫徹這種溫暖的感覺。”

另一方面，溫暖的地板也為廚房中大膽的白色大理石島台和Pierre Frey 墻紙提供了美觀的基礎。Chrissy在設計廚房時也考慮到了娛樂性，將 水槽放置在島台的後側，讓島台可變為聚會空間，成為烤肉和香檳的舞台。

而夢想廚房的另一部分，從門口就可窺探一二，包括全線的Gaggenau

和La Cornue頂級貴價家電。這是廚師的專屬領地，他們可以在這裡沈 浸式地為客人創造愉悅和驚喜。

“我們希望自己的家感覺像實用的藝術品。說穿了，生活是我們最偉大的 傑作。如果我們的故事、我們的經歷和記憶背後是平庸，又怎麽能期望 在日常生活中活出精彩？”

ainting large murals is my favourite work,” says Ola Volo, a 30-something Canadian artist who lives in Vancouver and Montreal.

You could be forgiven for thinking this tall blonde looks more like a model than a muralist, but make no mistake. She has made her unforgettable mark on walls throughout North America and other parts of the globe as well. In fact, a 2019 mural she completed in Montreal’s Mile End neighbourhood is the biggest mural painted by a woman in Canada. Called “Walla Volo,” it’s a vibrant tribute to the neighbourhood’s cultural and artistic diversity, extending over a whopping 15,000 square feet on a 10-storey building wall.

“If you know where to look, you can even spot it from the air when landing in Montreal,” Ola says. “The first time I saw it, it just shook me! I saw how it made my voice as an artist very clear, how it gave people no choice but to react to the artwork, to notice it and think something about it—good, bad, whatever. That’s the power of large pieces.”

Born in Kazakhstan to a Polish mother and a Russian father, Ola grew up surrounded by the myriad colours and patterns of the Middle East, China and Russia until she emigrated to Vancouver with her parents at the age of 10.

Her parents still live in Coquitlam and she visits regularly. She credits the distinctive look of her work, with its folkloric elements, magical but universal themes and colourful patterns, to the visual influences of her early upbringing.

“Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country in the world, and as a vastly multicultural country, it’s a sort of melting pot of content. When I started to look at what made my home beautiful as a child, I saw there were real connections with the ethics of the Eastern European and Kazakh culture that is often represented in bold colours and patterns.”

Women are central to many of her murals, none more strikingly so than in YWCA Metro Vancouver’s “The Wall for Women,” a 42foot mural on a wall at the corner of Burrard and Melville streets in downtown Vancouver. Described as a “message of hope,” it was created to support women experiencing violence. Reflecting the theme of how domestic violence hides in plain sight, five QR codes are hidden within the mural: taking a smartphone photo of them activates statistics about domestic violence and enables viewers to donate to new housing for women who have experienced violence.

“To me, the code in the pocket symbolizes how domestic violence is often a secret many keep hidden,” Ola says.

Her artist’s statement for the piece says: “Coming onto this project, I thought a lot about what it takes to leave a domestic violence situation. It made me think of a powerful, brave queen who grants herself love and opportunities to thrive. Crown held high, she’s looking forward to the future, protecting the fragile bird companion on her shoulder, and rising above the snake that’s trying to hold her down.”

She wanted the woman to claim her confidence and her power back by taking up space.

“She isn’t small or fading into the background. She’s front and centre and commands the attention she deserves—even in the busy streets of downtown Vancouver.”

Her Eastern European folkloric influences, with their patterns and colours, are prominent in this piece, while symbols like fire, hearts and stars contribute to its power and energy.

“It was a complicated topic to create a public piece from, and it shifted my perception of what public art can really do for spaces and people.”

Ola earned a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver.

“I wanted to be a painter,” she says. “Then I tried graphic design, but I wasn’t that great at it. With all its standards and strictures, I didn’t thrive. Instead, I became interested in illustration. I studied for a year in Rotterdam and felt like I found my tribe with painters and graphic artists. I was not concerned with public art until I re-

There were not a lot of murals 10 years ago. When Ola painted her first one, called “Bunny on the Seawall,” on 50 feet of Kitsilano’s seawall north of Point Grey Road near MacDonald Street, she didn’t know much about public art at all. She was not even aware that a city permit was required.

Soon the commissions started to come her way.

Hootsuite, a Vancouver tech firm, was her first client: she painted a mural at its Vancouver head office. She’s done work in Canada and the US for clients like Starbucks and Lululemon, and public art in spaces from Montreal to Monterrey.

She’s always aware that public art reflects its community and cultural identity. For the Vancouver Mural Festival in 2016, she created “Van City Scape” at 1st Avenue and Main Street, a bright, lively piece “to bring colour to Vancouver, as it is often grey and rainy in the city.”

In Mexico, she incorporated colour palettes that fit into the neighbourhood as well as colours she had seen in local markets. As for

the women she depicts, “They represent a little bit of me, a little bit of the women who inspire me.”

She has remained independent of agents or agencies, making herself accessible through her website—and she likes it that way.

“All the work I do usually comes to me from people reaching out. I like that I get to run my own show, make my own decisions and develop my own art. I find projects that align with me usually find their way to me,” Ola says.

She’ll be spending time in Vancouver this fall working on a Vancouver NFT Gallery opening and other projects.

“I’ve been painting walls non-stop since COVID, and recently I found digital work to be another great way to tell stories. It’s a different medium I’m using to keep exploring my art.”

Still, she is sentimental about “Bunny on the Seawall,” her first mural, painted during low tides on the beach in Kitsilano.

“It ignited me to take that leap into storytelling and messaging to the public and not be insecure about it. Besides, she says, “Once you try it, you can’t stop.”

Telling a story through the canvas of food

BRUNO’S CHEF WILL LEW COMMUNICATES THROUGH THE CREATIVITY AND ARTISTRY OF FOOD

he concept of Bruno is all about sharing and bringing people together through the gift and creativity of food,” says Will Lew, executive chef of Richmond’s newest high-end destination restaurant, Bruno, located in the brand new Versante Hotel.

“It is dictated by what is found locally around us: the seasons, the passions and talents of so many local purveyors in Richmond and in BC—the suppliers, artisans, farmers and fisher folk. It is also created around food meant to be shared, be that in a casual way or in the most elaborate and theatrical dining experience.”

With this in mind, my husband and I sat down to an unforgettable tasting journey at Bruno. We feasted with our taste buds and our eyes and we moved through the five-course Bruno Board Experience—each course paired with exquisite wines.

So many aspects of this meal stood out, from the artistry of the plated food to the impeccable service and, of course, the heavenly flavours. There was drama too, as Will undertook a table-side torching of the first course— raw and torched oysters—the result of which was a meltin-your-mouth rendering of one of my most-cherished foods. The oysters arrived plated on a seashore-mimicking bed of sea rocks, shells and seaweed. A fall-season salad— appropriately coloured in green, yellow and red—followed, dairy-free for me, with burrata for my husband. Pork belly tomahawk was up next, alongside my favourite course of the evening, the saffron shellfish. A massive board of duck breast, Brussels sprouts and potatoes followed.

The selection of wines was impeccable, from the crisp Vigneti Del Sole Pinot Grigio to the smooth Roche Pinot Noir and silky Nicolis Seccal Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore.

For the dining experience we were seated comfortably ensconced in a private glass area with available space for 10. The main-floor restaurant, with its sleek, contemporary bluebeige decor, seats 130 people, including an 18-seat central community table.

The entire experience was unforgettable and, in looking at others in the restaurant—people enjoying the camaraderie forged by sharing food and lingering at tables well into the evening—it seems Bruno has hit a chord with locals as well as guests staying at Versante Hotel, itself a vibrant and colourful destination.

Will says the desire to “communicate through creativity and artistry” has always been at the forefront of his career choices, and growing up in East Vancouver surrounded by many cultures—both his parents immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong in their youth—he believes his specialty as a chef is “diversity.”

This means “taking any concept and transforming it into coherent, engaging and immersive experiences for our guests and our colleagues.”

He adds: “Cooking this way—translating a story, a moment, a place, a time, a message, a purpose and so on—is what allows me and the team to be most creative in telling a story that has significance.”

Before becoming a chef, Will obtained a Bachelor of Science in animal biology from UBC, and also spent many years as an orchestral violinist.

But he says, “My earliest memory was cooking with my grandfather. I learned art, cooking and creativity from him and that fostered a lifetime passion towards all forms of art.”

Although several careers interested him, he recalls: “One summer I decided to find a job in the food and beverage industry, while still pursuing music. I went into almost every restaurant in Yaletown asking for a job. All the restaurants said that without experience it wasn’t possible…”

But eventually he met a chef willing to give him an on-the-spot job in the dish pit of a new and busy establishment.

“As I washed dishes that evening, I saw how food and the industry brought so much creativity, leadership, intensity and satisfaction to not only the guests but to the chefs and cooks as well. I finished that shift at 4:00 in the morning. My culinary life flashed before my eyes and I knew that I wanted to be a chef!”

Will worked his way up from washing dishes to running almost all Glowbal Restaurant Group establishments, and was eventually recruited to run restaurants for Fairmont Pacific Rim.

Here, he says, his “ultimate passion and life mission for ocean sustainability came to life as we opened the first 100 per cent Ocean Wise sushi restaurant, RawBar, in the lobby of the Fairmont Pacific Rim.”

Will became chef de cuisine of Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, later headed up Black & Blue and eventually opened his own finedining restaurant, Quanjude.

“Then the pandemic drastically shifted the landscape of the industry,” he says. “It led to my greatest dream, which was to work for a non-profit organization focused on sustainability.”

Will became the executive chef of Ocean Wise Conservation, which encompassed Ocean Wise Seafood as well as the Vancouver Aquarium. When the aquarium shut down, he worked for Nootka Marine Adventures, creating culinary programs focused on seafood sustainability. This season, he was asked to take on the role of executive chef of Club Versante, which will open several restaurants, the first of which is Bruno.

As one of seven official Ocean Wise Seafood Council members in Canada, Will stresses that eating lower down the seafood food chain is crucial to sustainability. Eating restorative species like kelp and bivalves is “an essential part of keeping the abundance of wild seafood viable for the future.”

The joy Will finds in creative collaboration with his colleagues shines through in everything at Bruno, and a swing through the breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and dessert menus sets the mouth watering. We also sampled a number of items at breakfast the following morning and although I rarely eat breakfast, I couldn’t help but tuck in to the so-tempting plates. Throughout both meals, I was impressed with how Chef Will seamlessly altered my food to meet dietary restrictions. I can’t believe anything could taste any better by adding back in the gluten and dairy!

“My favourite cuisine to cook is one that is dictated by a story with significance and meaning,” Will says in summary. “Specifically, I aim to create custom menus that transport our guests to another place—somewhere with meaning. I want to tell a story through the canvas of food. Creativity is the vessel through which we create significance in the meaning of our food.”

從洗碗到管理層，Will 在 Glowbal 餐廳集團一路做起，最終被招募到 Fairmont Pacific Rim 酒店管理餐廳。

他說，在這裡他“終於實現了自己對海洋可持續發展的終極熱情和人生使 命，因為我們在酒店大廳裡開設了第一家100%的 Ocean Wise 壽司餐 廳 RawBar。”

n October 15, 2022, outside the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel, the temperature hovered around 22 degrees Celsius and sunshine poured down like liquid gold. Private jets from across Canada and around the globe crowded local runways—many of their passengers here to celebrate a once-in-a-lifetime Vancouver wedding.

Inside the hotel’s ballroom, hundreds of flowers awaited the arrival of always-stylish Jim Murray and the gorgeous Linda Mah, who celebrated their nuptials in a truly spectacular way. And none of the 300 or so invited guests could have imagined how meticulously the impressive event had been planned, right down to the last detail.

Jim is managing partner and CEO of Brian Jessel BMW, the upscale auto dealership known for throwing fabulous parties. This four-day wedding event was planned to perfection by Jessel’s marketing manager, the internationally known Abdel Karim Awwad.

The wedding proposal was not a typical down-on-one-knee surprise, but it was romantic nonetheless. The couple, who had enjoyed a loving 10-year relationship, decided on the date after they impetuously decided to go to Paris “to meet friends for dinner,” Jim said.

The City of Light was the ideal honeymoon destination, so it made sense to set a date that would enable them to honeymoon there afterward.

“We chose the Saturday before the flight,” Linda said.

They stayed in the Shangri-La Hotel, which offers a blend of European luxury and Asian hospitality, and was named “the most romantic hotel in Paris.” In a city redolent of romance, that’s saying a lot. There were million-dollar views of the Eiffel Tower everywhere and the hotel featured the only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant in Paris. It was a honeymoon to match the lavishness of their spectacular four-day wedding.

The high-tech, urbane, international and sophisticated event started with individual videos that were sent out as invitations. Ninety-five per cent of invitees RSVP’d with a resounding “yes!”

The couple’s initials, J&L, appeared everywhere from the dance floor to the limo doors (a BMW SUV, of course). The wedding was beyond bespoke— a dazzling event from start to finish, and even including a performance by the Goh Ballet.

Linda’s breathtaking wardrobe included a sleek silver-blue Isabel Marant dress, a contemporary Chinese halter-top dress, a beautiful white wedding gown and a drop-dead gorgeous black gown with a glamorous black feather train, most of which were designed and made in Ukraine.

The first of the event’s large gatherings was devoted to Linda’s Chinese heritage, her family, and close Chinese friends. The party took over Vancouver’s Dynasty Seafood Restaurant for a 14-course meal, including traditional Chinese wedding reception gifts of a suckling pig, ducks, chickens and gifts of money.

“It was Dynasty like you’ve never seen it,” said Linda. “You would not have recognized it—it was decorated so beautifully, with candelabra and flowers!”

Linda shone in a contemporary Chinese halter-top dress in dark red satin with tulle overlays that was designed and made in Ukraine. Jim looked elegant in Tom Ford, his designer of choice throughout the four-day event. They stayed in the “Prime Minister’s Suite” at the Fairmont Pacific Rim, where they hosted a small champagne-sushi-and-canapé gathering for out-of-town guests.

The marriage ceremony, performed by a Buddhist bishop, was the crowning moment of the event. Linda was exquisite in a strapless white wedding dress, and Jim was handsome as ever in his Tom Ford tuxedo. Guests sat down for a sumptuous four-course dinner, and the champagne bubbled and flowed endlessly. Toasts were kept to a minimum.

“Brian Jessel, my 25-year partner and friend, gave the first toast, and that was extremely meaningful to me,” Jim said.

The couple’s first dance was to “All of Me,” by John Legend. After that, the Famous Players band broke into a number that had just about everyone on the dance floor—and they danced up a storm all night.

Jim and Linda cut the cake, a seven-tiered fantasy with flowers and laced icing, and all guests received a piece to take home.

“It really was a dream wedding,” Linda said. “It was a spectacular success—and the seating plan was key to making it a great party. People from all over—New Zealand and Montreal to Phoenix, Dallas and New York—met each other, had fun together and became friends.”

Home is a high floor in Vancouver House with a killer view—they say it’s their dream home and they love living there.

They took a short break there after their return from Paris, before jetting off for another honeymoon—five nights in Cabo San Lucas. All of it spoke of Jim and Linda’s love story.

“Abdel put on an outstanding event for us. His precision timing and thoughtful planning were amazing—and he created the whole theme behind it. The J&L thing has been brilliant. We no longer even sign off on our emails as Jim and Linda— the J&L brand has completely taken over!” Jim said.

“We didn’t feel like we had to get married, just that we would like to…and we’re so happy we did!”

There’s something therapeutic and utterly joyful about exploring a beach town, even if it’s just for an afternoon. Soak in the scenery, inhale the salty air and take a long walk along the coastline and you feel like you’ve had a mini-vacation, when in fact you’ve only been gone a few hours.

Next time you need precisely this kind of break, zip down to White Rock, a quintessential beach town minutes from the Peace Arch border crossing and the dense bustle of Surrey. Marine Drive is the main drag, and once the quest for parking has been achieved there’s lots to do.

We began our visit at the old 1912 railway station on the waterfront, now home to the White Rock Museum & Archives. The museum, which takes just a few minutes to explore, describes how the pier and railroad helped establish this seaside town as a popular destination for swimming, long walks and vacation getaways back in the early 1900s. Beyond the museum’s doors, a busker plays an accordion and the whiff of waffles, ice cream and fish and chips in the air draws us towards the restaurants along Marine Drive.

“SOAK IN THE SCENERY, INHALE THE SALTY AIR AND TAKE A LONG WALK ALONG THE COASTLINE”

Before we can eat, though, there are some great walks along the coast. The White Rock pier, first built in 1914 as a dock for coastal steamships, is the longest pier in Canada, extending 470 metres into the ocean. We walk to its furthest end and look out over the bay as a kiteboarder moves effortlessly across the surface of the ocean. Above us a bald eagle searches the water for dinner, and Semiahmoo Resort in Washington State looks so close you feel you could swim there.

White Rock’s West and East beaches are connected by a two-kilometre promenade that’s an irresistible draw for a leisurely stroll on a beautiful day. Families push strollers, couples walk hand in hand and children lick ice cream cones as they move slowly along the path. There’s lots of eye candy on the journey, between the public art along the waterfront, the view, the people-watching and the unmissable white rock for which the community is named. The four-metrehigh monolith, likely a glacial deposit left behind thousands of years ago, maintains its white colour thanks to regular TLC from the City of White Rock.

East Beach is quieter than West, and on sunny days children gather at low tide to build sandcastles and wade through the shallow water. West Beach, by contrast, has a more magnetic and bustling scene. Convertible cars playing loud music inch along the drive and ice cream and gelato shops dot the main strip. We stop at Maya’s Ice Cream for root beer floats and cones of sea salt caramel fudge gelato, savouring the sweet treats from a bench on the boardwalk.

Later, we drift in and out of nearby gift stores, a mix of retailers selling clothes, art, home décor and flowers. They’re interspersed by restaurants with “vibey” patios, filled with diners relaxing among family and friends and enjoying cold drinks beneath the sunny blue skies. White Rock’s carefree atmosphere is contagious, chasing the day’s stresses to the margins and inviting visitors to indulge in hours filled with uplifting views and sweet pleasures. It’s a place where the day’s hardest choice is the flavour of ice cream.

At sunset we nab a table at the Washington Avenue Grill. Near East Beach, it’s an upscale bistro overlooking the water and featuring tantalizing, Pacific-Northwest-themed dishes. Located in an historic 1913 building, the family-owned eatery is a favourite among locals, and a place where waterside tables are hard to come by.

The sun sets as we sip BC wine over a flavourful feast. It’s the perfect end to an exhilarating day in White Rock, and we head home feeling nurtured, refreshed and invigorated by White Rock’s distinct beauty and one-of-akind charm.

Jim Murray, whose spectacular wedding to Linda Mah is featured in this edition of Indulge, has another partner—Brian Jessel, Jim’s business partner at Brian Jessel BMW since 2007. We caught up with them on Granville Island with actress Emmanuelle Vaugier. The men’s personalities balance the partnership.

Brian is president of the company; Jim is managing partner and CEO. “He’s the boss and I’m in charge,” Brian explained. “Titles mean very little to me. We’re a lot the same. We think the same but have different approaches.” Both men are accessible and down-to-earth, known for their generosity, love of freedom and sense of fun.

Brian is decisive and Jim is methodical. And both men are passionate about cars, so it’s not surprising Brian Jessel BMW has been named the number one dealership in Canada for 18 of the past 20 years.
