Choosing Shows!

So you found your Program Guide at a Blenz Coffee location, downloaded the VanFringe App, and checked out vancouverfringe.com for show info, but you’re still lost. There’s so much to see, how can you possibly choose? Here are some common ways: Be Meticulous: Read every single description and pick your favourites. Be Random: Since all Fringe shows are chosen by a lottery or a first come, first served method, try that as your method of picking. Choose Based on Your Schedule: First figure out when you can come to the Festival, then, take a gander at the Master Schedule on page 29 to see what your options are during that time. Let Buzz Sway You: We’re the last stop on the Fringe Circuit, so there are tons of reviews for many shows. Check out our Twitter feed for links (@VancouverFringe). The Georgia Straight also reviews a big chunk of shows in their Sept. 6th and 13th issues. Plank Magazine also sets out to review every single show in the first week of the Festival. Visit them at PlankMagazine.com. Use the Fringe Escort Service: Introducing a brand new way to see Fringe shows. Just show up for the Fringe Escort Service at the Fringe Info Centre and one of our Escorts will choose a show and even go with you! See page 9 for more info!

2

Getting Tickets and Memberships!

Advance tickets are always the safest course of action—especially if you really want to see a particular show. Visit vancouverfringe.com to purchase tickets online, or swing by the Fringe Box Office in the parking lot next Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island between August 30 and September 16. If you’re going to see 10 shows, getting a Frequent Fringer Card is the best deal. We only sell one hundred though, so grab one early! And don’t forget that everyone needs to purchase a Membership. Since artists keep 100% of the regular ticket prices, your $5 Membership keeps the Festival going! You can get tickets at the door of each show too, as long as it’s not sold out. For more info on tickets, see page 8.

HOW TO FRINGE Welcome to the 28th Vancouver Fringe Festival! With 97 shows in this year’s Festival, we know it can be overwhelming! Don’t fret! These simple steps will help you have the best Fringe ever!

3

Being Social (Online & In Person)!

Lots of friendships and romances have started at the Fringe! Don’t be shy. Fringers are great resources on what to see at the Fringe. Chat with people waiting in line and visit the St. Ambroise Fringe Bar to find them. The Fringe Bar is also a great place to see free performances, live music, and to dance . . . not to mention have tasty beverages from St. Ambroise and Peter Lehmann Wines. And we encourage you to be social with us on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr! See page 59 for links.

4

Vote for the Pick!

Don’t forget to grab a ballot at all the non-site-specific shows you see. Your votes determine the short list and our judges will pick the top 10 for hold-over performances as the Public Market Pick of the Fringe! That’s right! There will be 10 Picks this year! And we’re moving the Pick to Performance Works. To be the first to find out what the top 10 shows are, come to the Fringe Awards Night on September 16. See page 26 for more info on the Pick and page 18 for more info on Awards Night.

INFORMATION

WELCOME TO THE FRINGE Welcome to the 2012 Vancouver Fringe Festival! As President of the First Vancouver Theatrespace Society (FVTS), producers of the Fringe Festival, I’d like to thank you on behalf of the Board of Directors for supporting local, Canadian, and international artists. The FVTS has lived long and prospered because of the support of our funders, sponsors, individual donors, volunteers, staff, artists, and of course you, the audience. This year’s Festival is going to be out of this world, with performances spanning across Granville Island on the Mainstages and out to the far, far corners of the galaxy (aka Vancouver) at Bring Your Own Venue locations and site-specific locations. After you catch a star performance or possibly a black hole, gravitate to the St. Ambroise Fringe Bar and listen to some local bands. When you see me there, I’d love to hear all about the show!

The Vancouver Fringe Festival again celebrates what is truly exciting about theatre and live performance—a spirit of adventure, unpredictability, innovation, and experimentation. Fringe audiences have the chance to engage with bold ideas, encounter new artists, and expand their expectations as the Festival brings daring local, national, and international talent to Vancouver. Since 1985, the Festival has thrilled audiences each and every year, expanding to become the province’s biggest theatre festival and one of the most successful events of its kind North America. On behalf of the BC Arts Council, I am happy to extend a warm welcome and heartfelt congratulations to the audiences, performers, volunteers, and organizers whose contribution will again make this year’s Festival such a thrilling success. Sincerely,

John Inthavixay President First Vancouver Theatrespace Society

Stan Hamilton Chair BC Arts Council

Greetings Earthlings. Welcome to Planet Fringe. Here you will find an abundance of beings willing to share their inner thoughts and feelings. We hear that you on Earth often hide these things. You will most certainly like our way of communicating them through what we call “the stage.” “The stage” allows you to see the world through another being’s eyes. You will sit in our seats and look down on your own puny planet, beautiful in its insignificance. And this is all much more affordable than your own rocket ships . . . Please enjoy and do not be afraid of laughing or crying or beer drinking. These are normal here.

Welcome to the 2012 Vancouver Fringe Theatre Festival.

Fringefully,

David Jordan Leader (AKA Executive Director) Vancouver Fringe Festival

Our Government understands that creativity and innovation are vital to a robust Canadian culture and to our economy. This is why we are pleased to invest in the Vancouver Fringe Festival, which should draw more than 30,000 attendees this year. For close to 30 years, this dynamic Festival has helped established and emerging artists bring their work to Vancouver residents and visitors, fulfilling its vision of “Theatre for Everyone.” On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate the organizers, performers, and volunteers who have worked so hard to ensure the success of this year’s Festival.

James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver and my colleagues on City Council, I want to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending the 2012 Vancouver Fringe Festival. We are very proud of Vancouver’s reputation as a centre for arts and culture. Few of our cultural organizations are as successful as the Vancouver Fringe Festival at showcasing new talent. The Festival has garnered a reputation near and far as a favourite annual event. I want to thank the Festival staff and volunteers, for your time and dedication, and I hope you enjoy many more years of success. To all the artists, directors, producers, crews, and audiences taking part in this year’s event, I trust you will find the Festival to be entertaining and enlightening.

PLANK

magazine

Congratulations to the artists for their many fabulous shows and I hope everyone has a wonderful time! Yours truly,

Gregor Robertson Mayor of Vancouver On behalf of Premier Christy Clark and the Government of British Columbia, I congratulate the Vancouver Fringe Festival for once again presenting their much-loved and keenly-anticipated cultural event. The Vancouver Fringe Festival is British Columbia’s largest annual theatre festival. Now in its 28th year, the Festival has grown steadily from modest beginnings. Last year’s attendance of more than 30,000 demonstrates the Festival’s popularity and economic importance to the community.

Every year, the Festival honours its mandate to provide “Theatre for Everyone.” I’m confident the Vancouver Fringe Festival will once again entertain familes with wonderful performances at affordable prices.

This year, the Festival offers more than 700 performances, featuring talent from across British Columbia, throughout Canada, and around the world. I commend Festival organizers for assembling an outstanding program to satisfy the diverse interests of theatre aficionados of all ages. From emerging artists to established performers, the 2012 Vancouver Fringe Festival has it all.

Our helpful Fringe Escorts will pick a show for you and even go to it with you! Head over to the Fringe Info Centre and meet your Escort and other members of the group for a stellar Fringe experience! The Fringe Escort Service runs at the times listed below:

TAKE ADVANTANGE OF THE FRINGE ESCORT SERVICE! Jane Westheuser grew up in Northern BC, is a mom to two teenage boys, and she loves taking tiny risks at the Fringe. “That’s what so fun . . . it’s so cheap and you really never know what you are going to get.”

MEET YOUR ESCORTS:

Sept. 7 at 8:00pm & Sept. 9 at 5:00pm Eddie Hung is an electronic engineering PhD student at UBC whose favourite shows are “those without props or without dialogue, yet are so clever you know exactly what they mean.” Sept. 11 at 7:30pm & Sept. 13 at 8:00pm Beverley Kort is a psychologist by day and rides a pearl white Vespa. Her favourite shows? “I like musicals—that are good! Plays with more than one person and content that isn’t about relationships.” Sept. 6 at 7:30pm & Sept. 8 at 7:30pm

GETTING TO THE FRINGE Granville Island is home to the Vancouver Fringe Festival’s Mainstage venues, the Fringe Box Office, and the St. Ambroise Fringe Bar at AGRO Café. With restaurants, a public food market, live theatres, galleries, art studios, and shops, the Island offers a lot to do between Fringe shows. Its relaxed atmosphere surrounded by mountains and ocean make Granville Island the perfect stage for outstanding theatre at the Fringe. Located in the heart of Vancouver, Granville Island (under the south side of the Granville Street Bridge) is easily accessible through a variety of means.

Walking and Cycling The seaside path is always a treat and gets you right to Granville Island and the Fringe! A bicycle is also a fantastic way to navigate the Fringe. Visit city.vancouver.bc.ca/maps.htm and click on the “Bicycle Routes” link to find your best route. These routes are also suitable for people on foot. You can also bring your bike on the Aquabus’ Cyquabuses for free! Bikes are only allowed on the Cyquabus and your best chance to catch one is to board from the Hornby Street dock. See the Ferry section below for more information.

Public Transit The Fringe is easily accessible by bus. The #50 bus goes straight to Granville Island from Waterfront Station thru downtown along Granville Street and on to the Olympic Village Canada Line Station. Otherwise the #4, #7, #10, #14, or #16 all stop on the south side of the Granville Street bridge, where a leisurely stroll through the Granville Street Bridge Pedestrian Underpass and across the Granville Loop Park will find you in the heartland of the Fringe. For more personalized transit information and trip planning go to translink.bc.ca or call 604.953.3333 (from 6:30am to 11:30pm).

Taxi Taxis are often found outside the Granville Island Public Market.

Boat If you’ve got your own boat or other water based form of transportation, free three hour visitors’ moorage is located behind the Granville Island Public Market. Space is limited and is available on a first come, first served basis.

Parking After 7:00pm, parking is free and without time constraint in most parking spots on Granville Island! Between 7:00am and 7:00pm, free time limited parking is available in designated areas around the Island. During those hours, a vehicle may park for a maximum of three hours (and in certain spots, only one hour). Moving to another spot is permitted as long as the total time parked on the Island does not exceed three hours. If you want to extend your stay, we recommend that you move into a pay lot to purchase the extra time needed. Vehicles parked overtime will be ticketed.

FOOD BANK SHOWS

The Fringe is partnering with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society to help the 25‚000 people who visit Food Bank depots weekly. We asked Fringe artists, who keep 100% of regular box office revenues, if they wanted to donate a portion of their ticket sales to the Food Bank and the response has been overwhelming! As you plan your 11 days of Fringe-ing, look for this Food Bank Show symbol in the Program Guide; 3% of the ticket revenue from every show by these artists will be donated to the Food Bank. It’s a great way for you to catch your favourite shows and support a good cause. In addition, your way to get into the Fringe Awards Night on September 16 at Performance Works (see page 18 for details) is by making a cash donation to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Why cash? With each dollar in cash, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank can purchase $3 worth of food for the people it supports. It’s way better than cans!

Theatre Performance

Parczew 45 is a dramatic whodunit that spans the years between the present day and the Second World War. Adam Domalik forces an elderly man, Misha Bartocha, to match wits and intellect to discover the truth about a devastating, secret connection they share—a connection that threatens to destroy the lives of everyone they love.

A semi-autobiographical slapshot to the solar-plexis. “Evan Frayne . . . is an actor to watch. He is able to convey masculinity and vulnerability without apologizing for either, which is an excellent trick.” —Colin Thomas, The Georgia Straight Friday, Sept. 7, 10:40pm Saturday, Sept. 8, 4:30pm Sunday, Sept. 9, 12:45pm Monday, Sept. 10, 6:15pm Thursday, Sept. 13, 8:30pm Saturday, Sept. 15, 8:00pm

Personal insights into four generations of females’ lives as they examine their body image from age 10 to 80. A girl has to live with these hunks of flesh hanging off her, if she’s lucky. With humor, love, and disdain, these four women express intimate feelings about themselves and each other, from their own points of view and as they react to external pressures.

This is a raw, edgy account of a man coming to terms with bisexuality within the confines of marriage and fatherhood.

Paradise appears in the backyard of a downon-her-luck farmer, in the form of a strange new planet in friendly orbit nearby. Pristine and resource-rich, it makes her suddenly the wealthiest woman on Earth, courted by developers and politicians. But is the price too high? And is Utopia all it seems to be? A dark fairy tale for our fracked-up world.

It’s the first day back to school after 14-yearold Jeremy killed himself in his bedroom following months of bullying about his love of figure skating and singing and the fact that he’s gay. Today, Jeremy’s friends, family, teachers, and tormenters gather to figure out who’s responsible and how to keep this from happening again.

ONSITE SHOWS

ONSITE SHOWS Fringe Onsite is a collaboration with the Only Animal that began in 2011 and is continuing to grow. The program helps artists develop site-specific work for the Fringe. Under the mentorship of Kendra Fanconi, the Producing Artistic Director of the Only Animal, and the Fringe’s Executive Director, David Jordan, these artists have worked to embrace every nook and cranny of Granville Island. This year, consider adventuring outside the theatre and seeing what site-specific theatre is all about. See page 12-13 for a map of all venue locations.

Home Free! is a haunting and evocative play about a pair of siblings living in a fantasy world. In a cluttered playroom they share with their two imaginary children, the two have created a world where play becomes the norm and reality is a dangerous place to be kept at bay.

Eight plays, five kings, two actors, one hour! This hilarious piece stampedes through the vastness of Shakespeare’s entire history play cycle (Richard II, Henry IV pt 1 and 2, Henry V, Henry VI pt 1, 2, and 3, Richard III) with just two actors and the contents of a toy shop. See the blood! See the kings! See the plastic armour!

Circumstance thrusts a man and a woman together during a power outage. The confines of a modern apartment become a limbo in which two strangers, unplugged, displaced in time and space, and disengaged from the constant motion of their lives can seek to lay each other bare. But can certain boundaries—personal, cultural, sexual, and mythic—converge?

The artists behind these shows have made their own venue arrangements and planned their technical needs on their own. It’s no surprise that the Fringe has a strong presence in East Van. The Festival was born in Mount Pleasant and spent its first 10 years there, followed by five years on Commercial Drive. Shows in the “East Side Satellites” section include BYOVs that are in venues near Commercial Drive, in the Downtown East Side, and anywhere east of Main Street. See page 12-13 for a map of all venue locations.

Theatre Terrific brings together a cast of 15 disabled emerging artists, supported by experienced artists. This whimsical story, with live music, pantomime, and choral work tells the tale of old sly Pantaloon who sits amongst dust and discarded dreams. Columbine, his daughter, he has frozen in repose. Harlequin, the man of her dreams, he’s struck mute. Customers come with their tattered discards. Pantaloon works his magic, as each item’s story is reborn, told in pantomime, then snatched and locked away. One day Innocence enters wishing to sell her most precious possession. Columbine twitches, Harlequin gasps, and Pantaloon has met his match!

Hip.Bang!’s unique brand of absurd, playful scene work has delighted audiences around the world. While exploring real emotions and honest situations, Tom and Devin of Hip.Bang! simultaneously allow their scenes to be as ridiculous as they are hilarious. In 2011 they were winners of the Victoria Fringe’s Pick of the Fringe. Laughs guaranteed.
