HOW TO FRINGE Welcome to the 29th Vancouver Fringe Festival! These simple steps will help you have the best Fringe ever!

1. Choosing Shows!

So you found your Program Guide at a Blenz Coffee location, downloaded the new eventbase App, and checked out vancouverfringe.com for show info, but you’re still lost. There’s so much to see, how can you possibly choose? Here’s some common ways:

Be Meticulous: Read every single description and pick your favourites.

Be Random: Since all Fringe shows are chosen by a lottery or a first come, first served method, try that as your method of picking.

Choose Based on Your Schedule: Figure out when you can come to the Festival, then check out the Master Schedule on page 30 to see what’s on at that time.

Let Buzz Sway You: We’re almost the last stop on the Fringe Circuit, so there are tons of reviews for many shows. Check our Twitter feed for links (@VancouverFringe). The Georgia Straight also reviews many shows in their Sept. 5 and 12 issues. Plank Magazine also sets out to review every single show in the first week of the Festival. Visit them at PlankMagazine.com.

Use the Fringe Concierge: Introducing a way to get Fringe show suggestions from super Fringe fans! Visit the Concierge desk at the Fringe Info Centre to chat about what kind of shows you like. The Concierge will help you pick a few out. See page 9 for more info!

2. Getting Tickets & Memberships!

Advance tickets are the safest course of action—especially if you really want to see a particular show. Visit vancouverfringe.com to purchase tickets online, or swing by the Fringe Box Office in the parking lot next to Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island between August 29 and September 15. If you’re going to see 10 shows, getting a Frequent Fringer Card is the best deal. We only sell 100 though, so grab one early! And don’t forget that everyone needs to purchase a Membership. Since artists keep 100% of the regular ticket prices, your $5 Membership keeps the Festival going! You can get tickets at the door of each show too, as long as it’s not sold out. For more info on tickets, see page 8.

3. Being Social (Online & In Person)!

Lots of friendships and romances have started at the Fringe! Don’t be shy. Fringers are great resources on what to see at the Festival. Chat with people in line and visit the St. Ambroise Fringe Bar. The Fringe Bar is also a great place to see free performances and live music, and to dance... not to mention to have tasty beverages from St. Ambroise and Barefoot Wine & Bubbly. And we encourage you to be social with us on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram! See page 63 for links.

4. Voting for the Pick!

VancouverFringe.com

Don’t forget to grab a ballot at all non-site-specific shows you see. Your votes determine the short list and our judges will pick hold-over performances to be the Public Market Pick of the Fringe! The Pick and Pick Plus will be expanded this year to run through September 29—and it’ll be at both Performance Works and the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre at the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. To be the first to find out what the Pick shows are, come to the Fringe Awards Night on September 15. See page 28 and 29 for more info on the Pick and Pick Plus and page 26 for info on Awards Night.

INFORMATION

WELCOME TO THE FRINGE On behalf of the board of directors we want to wish everyone a wonderful Fringe! After several years of being involved as board members we have recently taken on the role of co-chair to help guide the future of Fringe. Our board is a dynamic group of individuals working not only to ensure that we put our best Fringe forward each year, but that we have a long term plan for developing our role in the independent theatre community in Vancouver. We look forward to introducing you to new year-round initiatives that we will be launching in the coming years. In order to best serve the community we want to hear from you. Our board and staff are all committed to engaging with the community as we shape these initiatives. We would also like to thank fellow board, staff, volunteers, and all our partners in government and the private sector for making our vision of Theatre for Everyone that much more real every year.

The perfect match is hard to find. These days, dating is even more complicated with the predominance of online dating. We like to think of ourselves at the Fringe as old school flirters. Although we have just unveiled a fancy new website designed to help you find your perfect match, we also know that sometimes the chemistry is in the close proximity to the artist: you get a thrill when an artist with real charisma puts a flyer in your hot little hand; your heart beats faster when you sit in the venue waiting for the surprise of your next “date” to come on the stage; and you get goose bumps when something unexpected and thrilling happens in a show. Sometimes the connection is between you and one artist and sometimes the whole room is in on it. Sometimes it’s just a casual encounter and sometimes you make a connection that will affect you for life. This is Fringe match making! It doesn’t always work, but we guarantee it’s more fun than online chat. You are hereby invited to hook up at the Fringe!

Beverley Kort and Jane Westheuser Co-Chairs First Vancouver Theatrespace Society

David Jordan Executive Director Vancouver Fringe Festival Congratulations to the Vancouver Fringe Festival for another spectacular presentation of delightful, innovative, and immensely entertaining theatre in British Columbia.

Our Government understands the important role that arts and culture play in strengthening our communities and our identity. That is why we are pleased to invest in events like the Vancouver Fringe Festival that encourage imagination, experimentation, and originality. For almost 30 years, this Festival has been entertaining audiences with inventive performances that push the boundaries of theatre. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate the organizers, performers, and volunteers who have worked so hard to ensure the success of the 2013 Vancouver Fringe Festival. We are proud to support you in sharing your passion for the arts. James Moore (Former) Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver and my colleagues on City Council, I want to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending the 2013 Vancouver Fringe Festival. In the 29 years since it was founded, the Vancouver Fringe Festival has become a mainstream part of our city’s cultural life without losing its ability to provoke, challenge, entertain, and inform. Few of our cultural organizations are as successful as the Vancouver Fringe Festival at incubating new talent, generating new audiences, and strengthening our community’s theatrical and dramatic offerings. Thanks to all those on stage and backstage who make it possible. To the Festival staff and volunteers, congratulations, and I hope you enjoy many more years of success. To all the artists, directors, producers, crews, and audiences taking part in this year’s event, I trust you will find the Festival to be entertaining and enlightening.

Over 29 years, this great cultural event in Vancouver has flowered from modest beginnings into British Columbia’s largest annual theatre festival. I want to recognize and thank the Festival’s producers—the First Vancouver Theatrespace Society. These dedicated British Columbians and the Festival’s 600-plus volunteers provide the vision, commitment, and hard work that create so much fun for so many people every year. The BC government is a proud supporter of the Vancouver Fringe Festival, providing $40,000 through the BC Arts Council, our principal agency for arts funding and development. This year our support for council has reached an all-time high. The BC Arts Council helps support British Columbia’s outstanding artists, cultural organizations, and arts festivals. I urge everyone to enjoy this year’s Vancouver Fringe Festival, with 90 groups presenting about 700 performances at 15 venues. In addition to creating opportunities for artists and audiences, the Festival’s annual attendance in excess of 30,000 people brings significant economic benefit to local businesses. Best wishes to the Vancouver Fringe Festival for a great year in 2013 and for continued success in the future. Sincerely, Coralee Oakes Minister of Community, Sport, and Cultural Development The 2013 Vancouver Fringe Festival is a wonderful celebration of the innovation and excitement of live performance. At the Vancouver Fringe Festival audiences are treated to bold and daring performances by local, national, and international artists.

Yours truly,

Vancouver Fringe Festival

Gregor Robertson Mayor of Vancouver

With funding made possible by the Province of British Columbia, the BC Arts Council is proud to be a long-time supporter of the Fringe Festival. Since 1985, we have watched it grow from a small festival into one of the largest Fringe Festivals in North America. On behalf of the BC Arts Council, I am happy to extend our congratulations to the performers, volunteers, and organizers whose contributions make this Festival such a thrilling success. Sincerely, Stan Hamilton Chair BC Arts Council

GETTING TO THE FRINGE G ranville Island is the Vancouver Fringe Festival’s main hub! Most Mainstage venues, the Fringe Box Office, and the St. Ambroise Fringe Bar at AGRO Café are on Granville Island. With restaurants, the Public Market, live theatres, galleries, art studios, and shops, the Island offers a lot to do between Fringe shows. Located in the heart of Vancouver, Granville Island (under the south side of the Granville Street Bridge) is easily accessible through a variety of means. For all venue locations, consult the maps on pages 12 and 13.

Walking and Cycling: The seaside path is always a

treat and gets you right to Granville Island and the Fringe! A bicycle is also a fantastic way to navigate the Fringe. Visit vancouver.ca/streets-transportation.aspx to find your best route. These routes are also suitable for people on foot. You can take your bike on the Aquabus’ Cyquabuses for free! Bikes are only allowed on the Cyquabus and your best chance to catch one is to board from the Hornby Street dock. See the Ferry section below for more information.

Public Transit:

The #50 bus goes straight to Granville Island from Waterfront Station thru downtown along Granville Street and on to False Creek South. Otherwise the #4, #7, #10, #14, or #16 all stop on the south side of the Granville Street bridge, where a leisurely stroll through the Granville Street Bridge Pedestrian Underpass and across the Granville Loop Park will bring you to the Fringe. For more personalized transit information and trip planning go to translink.bc.ca or call 604.953.3333 (from 6:30am to 11:30pm).

Ferry:

Vancouver Fringe Festival

The Aquabus and False Creek Ferries operate from approximately 6:40am to 10:30pm daily and make for a lovely way to get to and from Granville Island. For more information including schedules, tickets, and maps, visit the theaquabus.com and granvilleislandferries.bc.ca.

car2go: car2go is a unique car share program that lets you pick up

and park your car2go anywhere in the “Home Area,” which includes the Fringe’s home base, Granville Island. As a special deal to Fringers who are new to car2go, you can sign up with the promo code “fringe” and they’ll waive the registration fee and give you 30 free minutes of drive time! Keep a look out for car2go to be at the Fringe where you can play games to win free drive time too! For more info on car2go, and to sign up and get driving, visit car2goVancouver.com.

Parking:

After 7:00pm, parking is free and without time constraint in most parking spots on Granville Island! Between 7:00am and 7:00pm, free time limited parking is available in designated areas around the Island. During those hours, a vehicle may park for a maximum of three hours (and in certain spots, only one hour). Moving to another spot is permitted as long as the total time parked on the Island does not exceed three hours. If you want to extend your stay, we recommend that you move into a pay lot and purchase the extra time needed. Vehicles parked overtime will be ticketed.

Taxi: Taxis are often found outside the Granville Island Public Market.

We are programmed to share stories. 30,000 years ago, starring into the flames, with animal furs tethered around their nether regions, our ancestors shared stories. Work with key members and founders of The Flame (Vancouver’s premiere storytelling event), to learn how to tell a great story. They’ll share their expertise in storytelling to help you create an inclusive, compelling, learning atmosphere. Bring a short personal anecdote. This workshop culminates with a sharing of stories on the Barefoot Wine & Bubbly Stage at the St. Ambroise Fringe Bar on Wednesday, September 11 at 7:00pm!

FOOD BANK SHOWS

The Fringe is partnering with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society to help the 25‚000 people who visit Food Bank depots weekly. We asked Fringe artists, who keep 100% of regular box office revenues, if they wanted to donate a portion of their ticket sales from each performance to the Food Bank and the response has been overwhelming! As you plan your 11 days of Fringe-ing, look for the Food Bank Show symbol in the Program Guide; 3% of the ticket revenue from every show by these artists will be donated to the Food Bank. It’s a great way for you to catch your favourite shows and support a good cause. In addition, your way to get into the Fringe Awards Night on September 15 at Performance Works (see page 26 for details) is by making a cash donation to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Why cash? With each dollar in cash, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank can purchase $3 worth of food for the people it supports. It’s way better than cans!

This comedy set in 1956 tells the tasty tale of five women who gather in a small, “pleasant town” for their annual quiche competition. All the “ladies” are members of the “Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein,” and their meeting is not devoid of a few deliciously unexpected revelations and surprises. With written contributions by Sarah Gitenstein, Mary Hollis Inboden, Meg Johns, Thea Lux, Beth Stelling, and Maari Suorsa. “A delectable portrait of sublimated Sapphism dishes up high-spirited theatrical comfort food with a bit of a saucy kick.” —Chicago Tribune

Quimera Theatre Collective Vancouver, Canada Funny / Weird / Intellectual / 14+ / Coarse Language / Sexual Content / Smoke Fog 75 minutes Playwright: Matthew Willis facebook.com/QuimeraCollective

It’s the roaring ‘20s, and a backstage dressing room at the Coco Club Gentleman’s Lounge is brimming with scandal, sex, and booze. A promising young dancer, and her seasoned dance partner, are intruded upon by a hit man out to hush them up, and a journalist looking for the scoop of the year.

Something eerie has settled over this theatre company as it unknowingly tries to rehearse the same script they are acting out for you, the audience. A dirty dramaturge, a superstitious director, a two-timing actress, and a barbarous playwright stumble through the darkness of the theatre, struggling to understand their roles in this erratic production.

Memorable Moments Vancouver, Canada Tear-Jerker / Intellectual / Intimate / 14+ 60 minutes Playwright: Sara Vickruck saravickruck.ca

Little Cary spent a lot of time alone, wishing and wanting: a daddy like others, friends who’d come over and play, bullies who didn’t pick on him, someone who’d stand up for him, and mostly, a life without chaos.

Aletheia: a brave act or a discovered truth. What makes a hero? Exploring critical moments in the lives of seven characters: a trembling solider, a grieving mother, a terrified parent, a doubting disciple, a joyful child, a murderer, and a missionary of charity. Aletheia explores the connection between personal truth and heroism.

Instead, the universe gave him a RockStar, and it changed his life forever.

Tasha Diamant Victoria, Canada Intense / Intimate / 14+ / Coarse Language / Nudity 75 minutes Playwright: Tasha Diamant humanbodyproject.com

In a world of honey boo boos and real housewives, are we really the weirdos? . . . we are? . . . well, OK then. I’m With Awkward shows the lives of two very different people with one thing in common: weirdness. What happens when two people must share a space for the “end of the world?” And will it change them? A stark look into humor and insecurity.

Tasha Diamant sometimes describes herself as a naked stand-up tragicomic. Naked and unscripted, she shares an intense experience of vulnerability. Audience members often join her. This is an urgently needed cultural antidote, an experience of choosing humanity over power and ego. Authentic. Transformative. Healing. Never the same show twice.

Imagine a fan club meeting, but not just any fan club meeting: the kind they had in the ‘70s, the kind that were religious in their devotion, the kind where the fans were women, who, having had their children and finished with the romance of real life, ingested the star to rejuvenate their vigor, their libido, their souls.

Each of us has dozens of pieces and parts inside of us, but what happens when they have to fend for themselves? An intense and beautiful physical theatre piece, Shattered gets inside a person who is broken apart. This solo endeavour follows the pieces as they strive to find where they fit and what their body needs in order to move past the dust.

I am the Bastard Daughter of Engelbert Humperdinck recounts Kathryn’s childhood, when she was forced to attend her mother’s Engelbert Humperdinck Fan Club meetings. Meet the ladies of the club: Pierrette, Francine, and Winnie, who had their own reasons for being there—from escape, to stardom by association, to acknowledgement of existence.
