Information

Welcome to the Fringe Namaste—Welcome! I am honoured, grateful, and excited to be a part of our highly ambitious team, in our relentless hard work to shift the Fringe despite these uncertain times.

At the heart of our organizational and Festival Rohit Chokhani planning is our passionate Executive Director vision to cultivate and Vancouver Fringe create an open and vibrant Theatre Society independent theatre community. Our ability to serve this mission has been considerably challenged and compromised by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite its significant impact on all of us, we believe in the resilience of our performing arts community, and the underlying hope and faith that exists within the human spirit. We are excited to move forward with a modified Festival, which will be different, unique, and intimate in its own way. We are truly overwhelmed with the love and support we have received, and we welcome you all to our Fringe Village with a collaborative spirit to take care of each other while we enjoy live performances—six feet apart but with our hearts and minds united! Happy Fringing! Welcome to the 2020 Fringe Festival! We are thrilled to build on our long history of innovation and creativity to find ways to offer live theatre in our ever-changing world. In difficult times, we need theatre more than ever! As a cisgender LGBTQIA+ settler of Scottish descent President residing on the ancestral Vancouver Fringe lands of the Tsawwassen Theatre Society First Nation, I am passionate about the Fringe vision of “Theatre for Everyone.” Now more than ever, we must prioritize equity, diversity, and inclusion as we find ways to continue our support of the arts and artists, while they in turn enrich our worldviews and offer us growth, excitement, joy, and respite, which are particularly important in these stressful times. Join us in celebrating the resilience of the Fringe community!

Creating and watching art is very important and healing, especially during these times Photo by Julie De Sousa. of uncertainty. Although the Fringe looks different this year, I hope that you are all able to safely enjoy the events and shows the Fringe has to offer online and in-person. Indigenous Elder and Spokesperson

2020 has required a lot of us in many different and challenging ways. As the Fringe’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Director and an independent consultant on Equity & Disability Justice, it has been an incredibly busy time. As a gender-fluid artist of mixed racial backgrounds and Siobhan Barker Equity Diversity Inclusion living with disability, I have experienced some of the many (EDI) Director ways that BIPOC and equityVancouver Fringe seeking communities have Theatre Society been deeply affected by world events. I champion efforts, such as the Fringe, to provide opportunities and outlets for the creative spark to flourish. It’s important during times such as these to recognize JOY as a revolutionary act. It is in this spirit of artistic celebration that I welcome you to our 2020 Staggered Fringe. Come share in some joy as we learn and grow.

I gladly welcome you all to this year’s Vancouver Fringe Festival, located on the ancestral, traditional, unceded territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (TsleilWaututh), and xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.

Greetings, and welcome to the 2020 Fringe Festival. What a stressful year this has been! As both a Fringe board member and a member of the BC Arts Council, I have seen how artists locally and nationally have been impacted. As a biracial person Jai Djwa who is hard of hearing, I have Member of the BC Arts seen how the BIPOC and Council disabled arts communities Member of the have been disproportionately Vancouver Fringe Board impacted. To help make sense of the world, we turn to storytellers, dancers, musicians, and other artists. This year, their work is more critical than ever. As I have struggled to have my own identity seen and heard, one thing I have learned from being hard of hearing is that getting closer, listening harder and working to hear different points of view can lead to deeper understanding. And the Fringe is a great place to start. Happy Fringing!

President Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals

I am thrilled to be able to welcome you to the Vancouver Fringe Festival, and I encourage you to take the time to get involved however you can. Your support is integral to these artists. In these ever-changing times of a global pandemic, precarious funding, expensive living costs, and the day-to-day struggles many artists face, having people see their work is now more important than ever. Happy Fringing. I am excited to welcome you on behalf of Playwrights Theatre Centre, co-partners with the Fringe on the Fringe New Play Prize, to this year’s unprecedented 2020 Vancouver Fringe Festival. As a long-time Vancouver Fringe supporter, I can attest to the power of the Festival in Davey Samuel connecting artists, audiences, Calderon and communities together. Dramaturg And, as a queer FilipinxPublic Engagement descent settler on Coast Playwrights Theatre Salish Territories—who has Centre had the privilege of doing shows in past Vancouver Fringes—I have witnessed its progress in fusing the celebration of theatre and performing arts in our city with values of inclusivity and equitability. Even during these uncertain times, I rely on the transmutable connective spirit that brings us together during a Fringe. Mabuhay, and enjoy! I am very pleased to welcome you to the 2020 Vancouver Fringe Festival.

The Fringe is a festival highlight in Vancouver, marking the end of summer and the beginning of fall. This year it will have a different feel but bring the same excitement we’ve come to expect.

2020 has us existing in a world undergoing a spreading consciousness and activation around justice at a time when coming together is full of complexity. It’s never been more important for Artists to use our talents to communicate and connect with one another. It was my pleasure, as Co-Executive Director of CultureBrew.Art, to partner with the Fringe to engage with BIPOC artists earlier this summer. Together we laughed. We learned. And we connected.

Information

Getting to the Fringe Get ready for this year’s performances at venues around Granville Island and East Vancouver! Performance Works and the Picnic Pavilion are located on Granville Island. With restaurants, the Public Market, live theatres, galleries, art studios, and shops, the Island offers a lot to do between Fringe shows. It’s the perfect stage for outstanding theatre at the Fringe. Located in the heart of Vancouver, Granville Island (under the south side of the Granville Street Bridge) is easily accessible through a variety of means.

Meanwhile, The Cultch is located at the corner of Victoria Drive and Venables, a thriving centre for arts and culture in East Vancouver. This venue is a 290m walk from Commercial Drive, where you can enjoy vibrant dining and shopping experiences. As this is a pandemic year, please be sure to check service restrictions or guidelines directly with your transport service providers. We encourage folks to wear masks and to follow social distancing protocols during your commute to the Fringe. Check out the maps on the next page for all venue locations.

Walking and Cycling The seaside path is always a treat and gets you right to Granville Island and the Fringe! A bicycle is also a possible way to navigate the Festival. Visit vancouver.ca/ streets-transportation/ cycling-routes-maps-andtrip-planner.aspx to find your best route through Vancouver’s bike-friendly streets. To get to Granville Island, you can also take your bike on the Aquabus’ Cyquabuses for free! Bikes are only allowed on the Cyquabus and your best chance to catch one is to board from the Hornby Street dock. See the Ferry section below for more information.

Vancouver Fringe Festival

Taxi

10

Taxis can be found outside the Granville Island Public Market, along Commercial Drive, and on Hastings Street.

Public Transit The Fringe is accessible by bus. The #50 bus goes straight to Granville Island from Waterfront Station through downtown along Granville Street, or from the Olympic Village Station. The #84 stops on 4th Avenue and Fir Street, a 650m walk from the Island. Otherwise the #4, #7, #10, #14, or #16 all stop on the south side of the Granville Street bridge, where a 700m walk through the Granville Street Bridge Pedestrian Underpass and across the Granville Loop Park will find you in the heartland of the Fringe. For The Cultch, the #20 bus runs along Commercial Drive with a stop right by Commercial-Broadway Skytrain Station. Take the #20 to Venables Street, walk 290m (up a slight incline) on Venables towards Victoria Drive, and you’ve reached The Cultch. You can also take the #14 and #16, which run along Hastings Street, with a stop at Victoria Drive. From there, walk 550m South towards Venables and voila!

Please keep in mind that face coverings are mandatory on board all transit vehicles. For more personalized transit information, trip planning, and face covering exemption policies, go to new.translink.ca or call 604.953.3333 (from Monday to Friday 5:30am12:30am or Saturday to Sunday 6:30am-11:30pm).

Parking Day parking is temporarily free on Granville Island. Overnight or extended parking is only allowed in the Old Bridge St. Indoor Parking Lot. Register for overnight parking by calling 604-666-6655 from Monday to Friday or 604-315-3003 on weekends. For directions to the parking lot and more information, visit granvilleisland.com/ parking-information-0. At The Cultch, a limited number of accessible parking spots are available via confirmation with the box office in advance. There is also street parking nearby. Metered parking is available along Commercial Drive, although daytime rates (9am-6pm) may vary from evening rates (6pm-10pm).

Boat If you’ve got your own boat or other water-based form of transportation, free three-hour visitors’ moorage is located behind the Granville Island Public Market. Space is limited and is available on a first come, first served basis. Register with security at 604-315-3003.

Ferry The Aquabus and False Creek Ferries make for a lovely way to get to and from Granville Island. The Aquabus operates from 8am-8pm daily with boats every 15 minutes. Meanwhile, False Creek Ferries sails every 5 minutes from downtown Vancouver to Granville Island, and every 15 minutes on all other routes. Many Aquabuses are wheelchair accessible; however, the docks at Spyglass Place and at the Plaza of Nations are not. Some ramps are steeper at low tide. Please use caution. For more information including schedules, tickets, and maps, visit the theaquabus.com and granvilleislandferries.bc.ca.

Join us for an online meet-up with past, present, and future BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) Fringe Artists and community members! Get comfy in front of your computer as you engage in themed questions on how artists have pivoted during COVID-19, such as: • Some look at this time as an opportunity to view things in less binary ways. For example, losses and gains. How does that statement resonate for you? • How do you foresee a shift in your artistic practice? Or do you? • How can we facilitate a more effective interweaving of traditions, abilities, and cultures in our creative process that support racial justice in terms of belief(s) and behaviour(s)? Please note that this event is exclusive for BIPOC participation.

RSVP by Sept. 6 to indicate needing ASL interpretation or live captioning. Registration closes on Sept. 17.

The Hills Have Pens: A Generative Hillside Writing Workshop for Equity-Seeking Artists

Vancouver Fringe Festival

12

Flex your writing muscles by joining Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Director Siobhan Barker and Communications and Outreach Coordinator Karla Comanda for an afternoon of writing by the hillside (or close to it anyway)! Using prompts, Siobhan and Karla will lead participants into exploring themes of isolation, longing, joy, nature, and privilege. Bring your pen and paper, your laptop, or whatever you need to get writing! Bring your own picnic lunch and experience an inspiring writing journey while taking in a little slice of sunshine. Please note that this event is exclusive for Equity-Seeking community participation (includes BIPOC, living with disability, neurodiverse, LGBT2Q+, low vision, d/Deaf). The workshop will be limited to 15 participants and safe-distancing practices will be observed.

Sliding scale $0-$20 registration will be required. RSVP by Sept. 9 if requesting ASL Interpretation. Additional registration ongoing until Sept. 18.

This is your Advance notice: Female-identifying Indigenous artists are taking the stage

Advance Theatre:

New Works by Diverse Women at Performance Works

1218 Cartwright Street

In 2015, Ruby Slippers Theatre approached Playwrights Guild of Canada and The Vancouver Fringe Festival with the idea to showcase dramatic readings of five new plays written and directed by diverse female-identifying theatre artists. Thus, Advance Theatre was born. RST’s radically inclusive vision is a world where diversity is celebrated through a deeper understanding of each other. So our Advance Theatre Series is part of our larger, ongoing efforts that reflect our vision and mission to champion and celebrate diversity in the playwrights, directors, and actors we work with. For 2020, it is presented in partnership with Ruby Slippers Theatre, Playwrights Theatre Centre, Playwrights Guild of Canada and Savage Society. Curated by Tai Amy Grauman (Métis, Cree, and Haudenosaunee), these works showcase dramatic readings of plays written by Indigenous women. Admission by donation in advance online, or at the door. Contactless payment only. No cash. Masks required. All readings will be livestreamed to Ruby Slippers Theatre’s YouTube channel.

Thanks to our Volunteers 2020 has been a crazy ride for all of us. Although our world has changed and our lives have been impacted, let’s not forget all the positive things that happened this year, like the extra time we have for watching Netflix and baking bread! More importantly, we saw communities come together during these challenging times, like the daily 7pm cheer for healthcare workers, and YOU, our beloved Fringe volunteers, coming out to help us make the 2020 Vancouver Fringe Festival possible! The Festival looks different this year, but one thing that remains the same is the fact that we cannot do this without our volunteers. So, thank you for all of your support, love, and laughter. We can’t wait to make Theatre for Everyone possible with you for many more years to come!

Do you want to be part of this incredible volunteer community and make a difference in the lives of artists and patrons? 19
