Information

I am honoured to welcome you to the 2018 Vancouver Fringe Festival. I’m so excited to be fully immersed in the enthusiasm encompassing this Festival! My love of the Fringe began when I volunteered as an Office Assistant for the 1997 Festival on Commercial Drive. The Fringe was the first arts organization I connected with after moving to Vancouver and it’s where I met my first batch of “theatre people” in town. This experience and the reference that I got led to my first professional theatre job at the Arts Club Theatre on Granville Island where I worked in administration and marketing. Since then, I have held General Manager roles for Rumble Theatre, the performing arts centre at Capilano University, and the Firehall Arts Centre. Through all of these roles I feel proud about playing a part in bringing many, many shows to the stage in those communities. During this time I continued to attend the Fringe as a member of the theatre community and as a genuine theatre fan! For all of you ongoing fans, you can still expect to find all the things you’ve come to know and love about the Vancouver Fringe; wacky shows, rubber chickens, really moving stories, and fun times at the Fringe Bar (this year, the Phillips Fringe Bar)! I am committed to the organization’s mission of “cultivating artists and audiences to create an open and vibrant independent theatre community.” Thank you to all the artists, volunteers, donors, board members, patrons, sponsors, staff, and Jimmy. I look forward to Fringe-ing with you!

Laura Efron Executive Director Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society We are excited to have Laura Efron join our Fringe family as our Executive Director, bringing many years of theatre experience and leadership to our organization. At the Board level, we are continuing our focus on making the Vancouver Fringe more equitable, diverse, and inclusive. This is important to us. Together the board and staff are striving for meaningful and systemic change within our organization. Our current Vice President, Sharon Sutherland, is in the process of stepping into the President role and her experience working in partnership with a number of indigenous communities and organizations is proving to be valuable as we move forward in this work. Thanks to TD Bank Group, the Vancouver Foundation, and the BC Multiculturalism Grant for providing funds to help us pursue our vision of Theatre for Everyone. We’re also excited to begin a new partnership with Phillips Brewing and Malting Co. from Victoria this year. Come join me for a beer in the Phillips Fringe Bar!

Andrew Westman Outgoing President Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society On behalf of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF), welcome to the Fringe! We exist as an organization to unite, support, empower, and strengthen our member festivals in order to cultivate and foster independent artistic exploration for artists and audiences across North America. We currently have 33 member Festivals spanning Canada and the USA and we are consistently growing every year. CAFF members return 100% of the ticket price back to the artists and all Festivals are selected either by lottery or on a first come, first served basis, ensuring that everyone has the same opportunity to tell their story on stage. We hope you enjoy this Fringe and you are inspired to visit other Fringe Festivals to explore this incredible movement with as much passion as the artists offer you and the same curiosity that brought you here. Congratulations on being an adventurer and thank you for being a supporter of the arts.

Lucy Eveleigh President Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals

Vancouver Fringe Festival

Each year over 200 Fringe Festivals across the world showcase hundreds of thousands of artists and performers. 19 million people see 170 thousand performers in 60,000 events. There are so many different forms of Fringe, no two are the same and they never repeat themselves.

4

Fringes are the front runners in arts and creative development. Giving audiences fresh innovation, new writing, and exciting experiences. They represent community cohesion, everyone working together for the greater good. Fringes reflect the cities and towns in which they reside, embracing the history, and future, of its venues, performers and personalities locally, nationally and internationally. I was privileged to meet the team producing the Vancouver Fringe at the World Fringe Congress. I follow the progress of the Fringe every year and enjoy seeing it going from strength to strength. The Vancouver Fringe is an important part of the World Fringe Network. Support your Fringe, get involved, play along and see something new. Every day is a new adventure!

Holly Lombardo Managing Director World Fringe

Welcome to the Vancouver Fringe Festival! Fringe Festivals are a mainstay of the annual events calendar in cities around the world. Bursting with colourful and varied performances, these festivals invite audiences to discover new artists as they share their passion and creativity with the world. Our government is proud to support festivals like this one, which give people of all ages access to live performances that enrich and entertain. As Minister of Canadian Heritage, I want to congratulate all the organizers, sponsors, volunteers, and performers who work hard to bring the Vancouver Fringe Festival to life every year. Best wishes for another successful festival. Enjoy the performances!

Mélanie Joly Minister of Canadian Heritage On behalf of Premier John Horgan and the Government of British Columbia, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 Vancouver Fringe Festival. As the largest theatre festival in Vancouver, this is a key event for the local arts community that people look forward to every year. The Festival offers a superb theatre arts experience, with more than 700 performances, along with artists’ forums, and live music performances. With expected attendance of about 40,000 people, the Festival generates significant social and economic benefits for British Columbians. The Government of British Columbia is a proud supporter of the Vancouver Fringe Festival with funding provided through the BC Arts Council. This year, the BC Arts Council gave an operating grant of $37,500 to support this outstanding event. Congratulations to the Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society for organizing this much-loved festival that is known for its variety, creativity, and out-of-the-box point of view. I also want to acknowledge the more than 500 Festival volunteers for their dedication and commitment to the event. Best wishes to everyone attending the 2018 Vancouver Fringe Festival. I know this year’s Festival will be the most successful one to date!

Lisa Beare Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture On behalf of the British Columbia Arts Council, it is my pleasure to welcome audiences and artists alike to the 2018 Vancouver Fringe Festival. Over the next 11 days, venues around Granville Island and throughout the city will host a wide and diverse selection of theatrical performances. I hope you will enjoy the rich program of inspired performances that these actors, directors, designers, and producers have come together to create. The BC Arts Council is proud to support the commitment of the dedicated organizers and volunteers who continue to make this event such an amazing experience for audiences.

Susan Jackson Chair BC Arts Council On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver and my colleagues on City Council, I want to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending the 2018 Vancouver Fringe Festival. The Vancouver Fringe Festival has established itself as a leader in the arts community and has been at the forefront at showcasing new talent since 1985. The Fringe Festival’s mission was to open the door to artists of all genres and formats and allow the exchange of expression to flow freely— this has created one the best art festivals in Vancouver. Congratulations to all the staff and over 500 volunteers who work so hard to create a successful festival. To all the artists, directors, producers, crews, and audiences taking part in this year’s event, I trust you will find the 2018 Vancouver Fringe Festival to be entertaining and enlightening.

Gregor Robertson Mayor City of Vancouver

Public Transit

Located in the heart of Vancouver, Granville Island (under the south side of the Granville Street Bridge) is easily accessible through a variety of means.

Information

Granville Island is the Vancouver Fringe Festival’s main hub! Most Mainstage venues, the Fringe Box Office, and the Phillips Fringe Bar are on Granville Island. With restaurants, the Public Market, live theatres, galleries, art studios, and shops, the Island offers a lot to do between Fringe shows. It’s the perfect stage for outstanding theatre at the Fringe.

But don’t forget, there are venues all over the city! Check out the maps on pages 10-11 for all venue locations.

Boat

The Fringe is easily accessible by bus. The #50 bus goes straight to Granville Island from Waterfront Station through downtown along Granville Street, or from the Olympic Village Station. The #84 stops on 4th Avenue and Fir Street, a short walk from the Island. Otherwise the #4, #7, #10, #14, or #16 all stop on the south side of the Granville Street bridge, where a leisurely stroll through the Granville Street Bridge Pedestrian Underpass and across the Granville Loop Park will find you in the heartland of the Fringe. For more personalized transit information and trip planning go to translink.bc.ca or call 604.953.3333 (from 6:30am to 11:30pm).

Parking After 7:00pm, parking is free and without time constraint in most parking spots on Granville Island! Between 7:00am and 7:00pm, free timelimited parking is available in designated areas. During those hours, a vehicle may park for a maximum of three hours (and in certain spots, only one hour). If you want to extend your stay, we recommend that you move into a pay lot and purchase the extra time needed. Vehicles parked overtime will be ticketed.

If you’ve got your own boat or other water based form of transportation, free three-hour visitors’ moorage is located behind the Granville Island Public Market. Space is limited and is available on a first come, first served basis.

Ferry The Aquabus and False Creek Ferries operate from approximately 6:30am to 10:30pm daily and make for a lovely way to get to and from Granville Island. Many Aquabuses are wheelchair accessible; however the docks at Spyglass Place and at the Plaza of Nations are not. Some ramps are steeper at low tide. Please use caution. For more information including schedules, tickets, and maps, visit theaquabus.com and granvilleislandferries.bc.ca.

Unleashing Your Inner Storyteller with Josh Languedoc $10 | For people 14+

FREE for all participants All levels of experience welcome

Register at tickets.vancouverfringe.com/ categories/workshop

Please email artist@vancouverfringe.com to RSVP. You do not have to RSVP to attend.

Dating back to ancient times, oral storytelling is the oldest art form. A crowd would gather and hold their breath as a skilled and passionate storyteller would weave a majestic story that taught us about our own mortality. In this workshop, playwright/storyteller/improviser Josh Languedoc (Rocko and Nakota: Tales From the Land) will demonstrate the skills needed in captivating an audience, holding their attention, and weaving a story in an interesting and dynamic way. Josh will take you through different ways to tell a story and how to access your inner storytelling voice. Special attention will be given to you—where you come from, your own stories, and your own culture. Wear comfortable clothing that you can move in, and bring one story. This story can be a real story from your life, a story you enjoy reading/ watching, or a traditional story from your culture.

Tuesday

10:00am-1:00pm

ASL Interpretation is available. Please RSVP to artist@vancouverfringe.com by August 31 if you require ASL interpretation and would like to attend this discussion.

Do you want to: • Clarify your responsibility to create inclusive and equitable artistic teams on and off stage? • Recognize and address the challenges you may experience when creating an inclusive and equitable artistic team? • Gain more knowledge on what barriers underrepresented communities experience in the performing arts sector? • Learn more about how to move forward with engaging artists of colour, artists with disabilities, and artists of various gender identities? Join Rohit Chokhani (Project SAT {South Asian Theatre}), Marisa Emma Smith (Alley Theatre), Mily Mumford (Nebula Company Theatre), Raes Calvert (Hardline Productions), and Susanna Uchatius (Theatre Terrific) to hear how they’ve found success, and how they’ve learned from their mistakes in creating diverse, inclusive, and equitable teams.

It’s all about the process!

What?! Yes! Musical Improv is exactly as it sounds: creating a musical on the spot! This means scenes, songs, dance, and music all created spontaneously in the moment. It requires emotional expression, collaboration, a willingness to go big, and a connection to your inner voice. Through a series of exercises, musical improv games, and improvised musical scene work, you will get a beautiful introduction to the world of musical improvisation. Veteran musical improvisers Jennifer Pielak and Peter Abando (Inside Voices: A Musical In The Key of P) are known for creating an incredibly safe and playful space to work. Come to this workshop and be blown away by just how much fun you will have!

Regardless of your experience level, artist or non-artist, there’s always room to hone your craft. Training Jams offer space for exploration, curiosity, and connection to community. This class will focus on “Embodied Awareness,” playing with exercises, and utilizing one’s awareness in relation to performance and daily life.

Bring yourself and an open mind. Bring water and clothes you can move in, and a notebook.

When Rachel posits a radical hypothesis to explain why women menstruate, Zelda’s ground-breaking work, the “Grandmother Hypothesis,” is challenged.

Nearly 100 years later, the most essential record of their time together lives in Sophie Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatté’s 10 violin compositions.

Taylor Mac’s timely and darkly comedic interpretation of the classic dysfunctional family. Isaac has returned from the wars only to discover a household in revolt. Arnold, the patriarch, has become disabled, leaving Paige liberated from an oppressive and abusive marriage. Isaac’s sibling Max, is a newly out transgender teen with a thing or two to teach the world. And Isaac? He has to come to terms with where his loyalties really live.

Yes, technically, I’m a Catholic. I know this because in third grade when we all got ID bracelets—probably for when our little bodies were found after a Hiroshima-like blast—mine said: “In case of an accident, notify a priest.” “Wonderful storytelling—warm, touching and humorous... a pure delight.” —Fresno Rogue Festival Audience Review

In this amalgam of poetry and flamenco, dancer Denise Yeo, poet Garth Martens, guitarist Gareth Owen, and singer Veronica Maguire plunge mythological depths and excavate human shadow. With joy, mockery, humour, sunlight, these conscious and celebrated tools to reclaim ourselves whole and human, they go where “the word in time” soaks its way to dark corners. On Garth Martens’ Prologue for the Age of Consequence (House of Anansi Press, 2014): “Not merely good, but important.” —Arc Poetry Magazine

An indoor Fringe play at Brian Scott Gallery, 2227 Granville Street Be inspired by the return of our thought-provoking comedy-drama about Vancouver’s world-famous but misunderstood Wreck Beach. Watch us male and female therapists try to cure volunteer clothoholics from the audience! Will the audience strip off for the thrill of it? And to protest war, waste, and sexism? Our play is about nudism (naturism), a movement for fun, equality, and emotional and social healing (not for sex). We invented peer-counselling ‘shy therapy’ at Wreck Beach and have practiced it there, free to patients, since 2011. It is quicker, better, and funnier than shrinks and drugs. Modern society has been brainwashed that we must wear clothes; that our glorious bodies are yucky, ugly, and evil; that breastfeeding is dispensable; and that disrespecting others is inevitable. Those myths lead to gawking, shame, conflict, illness, and misery. Last fall, audiences loved this play, but the media refused to mention us, except the Langara Voice. Other shows might have 5 or 10 seconds of nudity. We give you 70 minutes of cheery, cheeky, shameless nudity. From the audience, ask us about beach controversies. Learn about beauty, bikinis, and burqas. Warning: possible clothing. No sex, drope, violence, or photography. Nudity optional for audience. For all ages (minors must be with parent). Each show is different—attend often. Satisfaction guaranteed. Love and peace!

The Electronic Gospel Lockport, Canada Playwright: Christopher VanHeyst

Coming of Age Productions Vancouver, Canada Playwright: Colleen Brow

Intense / In Your Face / Intellectual 14+ • Strobe Lights / Smoke/Fog

Funny / Intimate 14+

Swingers parties, obituaries, sex, Gwyneth Paltrow (damn her), and more. Writer and humourist, Colleen Brow, explores the trappings of aging through a comedic, bifocal lens; offering up handy tips and midlife musings as thick as an errant chin hair. Irreverence with a smidgen of melancholy. If we can’t be young again, at least we can be immature.

Electronic music is the driving force that creates The Electronic Gospel. Throne Life is an internal dialogue between God and man. The main character finds his life in a state of complete destruction and seeks wisdom from the throne of God. The answer unfolds an explosive revelation. In order to become wise you must first become a fool.

Embark on an acrobatic adventure through the mind of an adventurous procrastinator. Watch him fight, fly, and soar around different themes of his life searching for the meaning behind it all. My Imagination Ran Away Without Me can be thought of as a mini circus show. You may have purchased the whole seat, but you’ll only need the edge.

The girls sit down with a bottle of wine to face the reality of Rachel’s pending nuptials. Reflecting on awkward sexual encounters, failed relationships, and painful mistakes in search for a “soul mate,” is it really the American dream Rachel is looking for? Or the continued support of Zoe, while she makes the biggest decision of her life? “Jodi Morden and Hannah Gibson Fraser, playing Rachel and Zoe respectively, give us some of the strongest acting I’ve seen at the festival so far this year.” —Allan Mackey, Onstage Ottawa “Funny, sexy, disturbing and thoughtprovoking.” —Kevin Reid, The Visitorium

MARIONETTE SHOW FOR CHILDREN

Two brothers return to the island cabin where their father, a struggling novelist, met a tragic end. It takes an old actor, the spirit of William Blake, and love and anger across three centuries to help them perceive the infinite in the midst of loss. Written by a Blake scholar, and author of several ritual poetic dramas, including Sonnets to Orpheus (Paper Trails new play prize), the story draws on Blake’s letters, his marriage, his three years in a cottage at Felpham, and his basic myth of the division of Urizen (reason) into Spectre (thought) and Emanation (feeling). Several of Blake’s poems weave in and out of the action, in the form of an original, live musical score. Come share an hour in eternity.

New Works by Diverse Women at the False Creek Gym

Acclaimed Québec writer Rébecca Déraspe tackles female friendship, self-fulfillment, and other stuff that shouldn’t be so damn funny, as Anne’s pregnancy threatens her relationship with her lifelong BFF. How do modern young women negotiate love, ambition, and reproduction? What lines can we never cross, even for a friend? “Gametès, a nuanced text on female fulfillment, examines the force and complexity of the friendships between women ... Intelligent, funny, and moving, the unifying feminism of Gamètes avoids the pitfalls of pamphleteering and guides us from the intimate to the universal.” —Jury citation, Montréal Critics’ Prize for Best New Play of 2016-17 “One of the few times I have ever seen an onstage representation of female friendship that is powerful and true.” —Huffington Post “Certainly one of the most promising voices of the last decade.” —Les Librairies 80 mins
