FRINGE

if you’re new to the Vancouver international fringe festival, you’re in for a treat! if the fringe has been your favourite festival for the past 24 years, then this is merely a reminder of how to fringe!

The Fringe is an equal opportunity theatre festival. All 67 shows in this year’s Festival were selected by lottery or on a first-come, first-served basis. That means that it’s up to you, the audience, to decide what’s hot and what’s not! 1. find your prograM. If you found this program on a bus and want another, then you can find copies at community centres, theatres, and Fringe friendly businesses. You can also find copies at Blenz locations. Or you can download a copy from our website at www.vancouverfringe.com. 2. piCk your sHoWs. Get a pencil and start circling! Or head to our website and search by show title, date, or venue. Taking risks is what the Fringe is all about, so be spontaneous! Use the master schedule in our fancy new pull out section as a guide. For the real Fringe feel, try seeing two or more shows per evening! 3. get your tiCkets. Tickets are available online through our website at www.vancouverfringe.com or at the Fringe Box Office (powered by Mac Station) in the parking lot next to the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island. Keep your eyes peeled for the half price ticket symbol for a great deal or try to get a Frequent Fringer Pass ($80 for 10 different shows!). Frequent Fringer Passes are limited so hop to it! Check the Ticket Information section on page 6 for details. Half price ticket symbol 4. get a MeMbersHip. Without your annual membership fee, there simply could not be a festival! 100% of the regular ticket price of each show goes directly to the artists. Memberships can be purchased online or at any venue for $5. 5. gatHer your friends. Facebook, Twitter, the phone, carrier pigeon . . . however you gather your people, do it! Meet up at the St. Ambroise Fringe Bar at Agro Café, share stories, hear show buzz, let other people convince you about must see performances, and go see them! 6. get in line. If there are tickets left for sale, you can find them at the venue 50 minutes before show time. Seating is general admission, so line up early for the best seats. Line ups also make a great grapevine. Spread the word through conversations with your line-mates, or simply eavesdrop. For more ticket info, turn to page 6. 7. get tHe inside sCoop. Information about performance schedule changes and special events are available on the Fresh Sheet, which can be found at the Fringe Info Centre (in the parking lot next to the Waterfront Theatre), the St. Ambroise Fringe Bar at Agro Café, or at any Fringe venue.

Our Government knows how important arts and culture are to our communities and our identity. This is why we are pleased to support events like the Vancouver International Fringe Festival, which brings together people of all backgrounds and makes a positive impact on the local economy. It also gives our experienced and up-and-coming artists an opportunity to express their creativity and demonstrate their talent. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, and as a proud British Columbian, I congratulate everyone who has made the Fringe the largest theatre festival in British Columbia. Your passion for the arts and your desire to share it with Vancouver’s residents and visitors are much appreciated as this event celebrates its 25th Anniversary. The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

It is a great honour to be sitting at the helm in our 25th year. One of my great pleasures as Executive Director is having chance meetings with people who’ve had a connection with the Fringe Festival over the years. These connections often start with the confession, “I was in a Fringe show,” or sometimes, “Oh I know someone who was in a Fringe show.” My favourite such encounter was with a woman I met at a community gathering on Commercial Drive. She smiled as she recalled fond memories of the Fringe. I could see she was sorting through her brain’s filing cabinet — she then paused as if she was finding a file she hadn’t previously noticed before. “Oh, I was in a Fringe show! I had forgotten!” she said. She then laughed and we went on discussing the Fringe. It was such a pleasure to be present for the moment she recovered this memory. I suppose this comes with the territory of becoming a festival with a long history. What an achievement it is to reside in people’s memory banks. What an honour to be remembered as part of their lives. David Jordan Executive Director Vancouver International Fringe Festival

As Minister of Tourism, Culture, and the Arts, I would like to welcome you to BC’s largest theatre festival, The Vancouver International Fringe Festival. Hosted by the First Vancouver Theatrespace Society, The Vancouver International Fringe Festival is a 12 day event that spotlights an outstanding cast of local and international theatre talent. This year’s festival features more than 400 performances. The appeal of this festival continues to grow each year, from an audience of 4,000 when it was first held in 1985 to a record attendance of 30,000 to date. It takes a lot of hard work, ingenuity, and skill to host an event of this scale. I would like to thank everyone involved in bringing together this year’s festival, including the many volunteers and sponsors who generously give of their time and energy. I wish all the best to this year’s performers. Sincerely, Kevin Krueger Minister of Tourism, Culture, & the Arts

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the FVTS, I welcome you to the 25th annual Vancouver International Fringe Festival. It’s hard to believe that out of the humble beginnings and overflowing enthusiasm of a handful of visionaries, The Fringe has become a mainstay of the Vancouver arts scene. Through the tireless efforts of our staff and volunteers, the creativity and courage of our artists, and the support of our audience, The Fringe proudly takes its place among our city’s great festivals. We take pride in our motto, “Theatre for Everyone” and I’m sure that as you peruse the titles and listen to the buzz about the shows (and of course you’ll notice our low prices) you’ll agree that this year’s Fringe will once again live up to that billing. See a bunch of shows, get to some of our BYOV’s, come to the Fringe Bar, and enjoy. And one more thing: give us some feedback so we can continue offering the finest Festival possible. Finally, I would like to thank our sponsors. We have support from all levels of Government and a wide range of support from the private sector — from major contributors to those who donate to our auctions and keep our volunteers fed. Your commitment to the Fringe is greatly appreciated. Lonnie Propas President of the First Vancouver Theatrespace Society

On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver and my colleagues on City Council, I want to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending The 2009 Vancouver International Fringe Festival as they celebrate their 25th Anniversary. In the 25 years since it was founded, the Vancouver Fringe Festival has become a mainstream part of our city’s cultural life without losing its ability to provoke, challenge, entertain, and inform. Few of our cultural organizations are as successful as the Vancouver Fringe Festival at incubating new talent, generating new audiences, and strengthening our community’s theatrical and dramatic offerings. Thanks to all those on stage and backstage who make it possible. Congratulations to the artists for a fabulous show and I hope everyone has a wonderful time! Yours truly, Gregor Robertson Vancouver Mayor

oanna Maratta, founder of the Vancouver International Fringe Festival, had never even heard of “Fringe” when the application for the Edmonton Fringe Festival arrived at the First Vancouver Theatrespace Society (FVTS) loft in Gastown. But that application sparked the idea that Vancouver should host its own festival, and now, 25 years later, Vancouver’s Fringe Festival is the second oldest Fringe Festival in Canada. Prior to that fateful day, Joanna, along with a team of collaborators, had been running the FVTS since 1983. Their initial goal was to bring professional theatre people together to network and have a space to produce events. They felt a need to create a focal point for Vancouver’s theatre community. “It was a very dynamic time. There were a lot of people doing different things in different spaces. A lot of people were doing new work,” Joanna says. Nevertheless reviewers and audiences often wouldn’t catch on until it was too late and the productions had been cancelled—or worse yet, they had closed

down for violating fire codes or city bylaws. Creating a Fringe Festival in Vancouver enabled the FVTS to extend their goal. Not only would a festival strengthen the city’s theatre community by allowing its members to produce experimental productions in a setting surrounded by peers, but it would make attending the theatre more accessible for the general public. Hence, the mandate “Theatre for Everyone” was born. The Vancouver Fringe Festival began in 1985. It was centred in Mount Pleasant and held its opening ceremonies in the parking lot of an IGA. There was face painting, a chicken BBQ, and a sock hop! The 220 performances were held in seven venues with 4,000 people in attendance— and only 25 volunteers helping out! Anchor venues in Mount Pleasant included the Western Front, Heritage Hall, and later, for the Fringe Bar, the Mount Pleasant Legion. “On a Saturday night there could be as many as 1,000 people jamming the Fringe Club drinking beer and having great conversations about all things related to theatre and the arts. And [it was] a place for lots of

Fringe romances too,” Joanna reveals. But there were other, less conventional venues as well. “The Fringe became about converting space into theatres and that was interesting for artists, audiences, and Fringe organizers. Our technical and production staff were amazing innovators and adapters,” Joanna says, explaining their use of parking garages and other unique places.

. . . 25 years later, Vancouver’s Fringe Festival is the second oldest in Canada. The staff’s office spaces also reflected the “spirit of converting interesting space,” Joanna explained. The Fringe’s first office was Joanna’s VW Bug and a table at Bert’s Restaurant on Main. Next, they were in the flatiron building on Main and Kingsway. “We moved in in 1986 and bought our office furniture at the auction sale of Expo ‘86. Linda Gorrie [the Fringe’s General Manager from 1984 to 1988] and I had great fun bidding and buying and outfitting all the offices,” Joanna shares.

There was more fun to be had in the long hallway of that office where chair races and bowling were a common occurrence. “Main Street really did represent all of our learning and growth. And it was a neighbourhood festival,” Joanna remarks. Nevertheless, having two main roads (Main Street and Kingsway) running through the centre of the Festival put a damper on things, and once the Fringe reached a certain size, it had to look for a new home anyway. In 1995 the Fringe relocated. “We needed to grow and change and Commercial Drive was a neighbourhood that offered more diversity,” Joanna recalls. “We became ‘Alive on the Drive.’” The Fringe’s first home on the Drive was above the novelty shop where Havana Restaurant is located today. Known as the Production Palace, it was a hub for staff, volunteers, and others. The years on Commercial Drive introduced the Fringe to new features like Bring Your Own Venue (BYOV). There were also parades, children’s activities, pay by “pass the hat” shows, a craft tent, and Drag Bingo!

“The mandate of the Fringe or First Vancouver Theatrespace is ‘Theatre for Everyone.’ What does that mean? What does that look like? How do you deliver that?” says Karen Planden-Jeffery (née Planden), the Fringe’s Executive Director from 1998-2000, explaining the thought process behind the move from Commercial Drive to Granville Island. In the millennial year, the Fringe took the plunge into False Creek to see how other areas of the city might embrace the unique festival born in Mount Pleasant and raised on the Drive. The Fringe was ready to release its pubescent self into the centre of the city. Besides having venues on Granville Island and back on the Drive, there were also venues in Yaletown, which is where the Fringe Bar ended up. Despite not having a centralized location, ticket sales jumped by 25 per cent over the previous year’s sales. By 2001, the Fringe was primarily centralized on Granville Island. Its opening ceremony that year included a courageous parade around the Island — one that went against the flow of one way traffic!

Regardless of location, the Fringe has always embodied passion for entertainment without boundaries — one that participating artists, volunteers, and audience members hold in common. “While ‘unjuried’ is certainly our cornerstone, the word ‘unjuried’ is not exactly an every day word. I’m pretty sure Fringe festivals made it up,” current Executive Director David Jordan says, explaining what has sustained the Fringe’s energy over 25 years. “People are still flabbergasted and frankly disbelieving when I tell them that we literally pick the line up out of hat. The way I like to explain the Fringe is that we make the audience take on the role of Artistic Director simply by choosing which shows they will see.” The Vancouver International Fringe Festival now includes over 450 performances, six mainstage venues, 10 BYOVs and up to 30,000 people in attendance — with 400 volunteers helping to pull it all together. All throughout these 25 years the main aspects of the festival have remained the same. The Fringe is a place to find unjuried, uncensored theatre for everyone!

To confront her titanic and paralyzing fear of aging, Nurse Jackie takes a job with Jewish Aged Care. At 31, she feels she must come to terms with her own mortality lest she faint on the day she looks in the mirror to find wrinkles and gray hair. But she soon learns that age brings experience, wisdom, and humour to a life — it’s not just about bodies getting old and wearing out. The show mixes verbatim theatre with puppetry and character comedy.

Talking chickens, a timid rodent, a funky sax, and jumping flames. Gemma Wilcox, originally from London, UK, portrays 20 characters in this award-winning, humorous, and poignant tale of love and letting go. **** “Sexy, sharp, and seamless” — Now Toronto “She shows you what theater can be.” — Orlando Sentinel “Shape-shifter extraordinaire.” — Ottawa Citizen “You may not see a better performance at this year’s festival than the one Wilcox delivers.” — Winnipeg Free Press “Gemma Wilcox is both an adroit chronicler of the human condition and a wondrous chameleon of a performer.” — Pioneer Press, Minneapolis

Red Bastard is a dangerous, seductive, comedy-monster! His mission: to charm, disarm, shock, and seduce. His target: you! Anything can happen in this interactive master class in which America’s premiere buffoon becomes an elitist movement teacher who instructs us on “the theatre of life.”

Veteran performer Cara Yeates (Bye Bye Bombay, Knee Deep in Muck) is Madeleine Cross, barely 18, full of bravado, and is so determined to ditch her hometown, she signs up for “Teenage Jesus Girls Camp” in Honduras. But there is inevitable trouble in paradise. Pining for her absentee cowboy and feeling wary of the Jesus fan club, her desire for escape smolders. A fiery getaway is unavoidable. Lori Triolo directs Leah Bailly’s play, a one-woman tour de force, recalling first departures and teen love, taking audiences deep into missionary culture.

This is a must for all Fringers so be sure to come by the Agro Café at 1363 Railspur Alley (see map on page 26).

This year, your in-person donations during the Fringe will be extra tasty with a reward of something sweet from our friends at Cocoa Camino. Yep, fair trade chocolate for fair trade theatre — how Sweet is that? As if that weren’t enough, larger donations will mean more Sweetness from us: t-shirts, tickets, special event invites, and of course, tax receipts! REVIEWS Plank Magazine will be dispatching a small army of reviewers to review festival shows in real time. Plank’s goal is to review all shows in the first week. Plank Magazine — your online location for lively debate about the performing arts — goes live at this year’s Fringe with the Plank Club (held at the Agro Café. Check the master schedule on pages 24-25 for dates). The rules are simple: see the shows, debate what you saw. Strong opinions are encouraged. Visit www. plankmagazine.com for details. You can also comment on the Fringe Buzz Board. Speedpro Imaging will be wrapping our office in some crazy fancy stuff that you can write on. See what others have to say about a show and add your own comment too. It’s sanctioned graffiti! Find it at 1398 Cartwright.

Experience the storytelling power of pure movement with Alms, a play without words that tells the story of a coin dropped at a bus stop and the character whose life it changes. At turns both comic and tragic, this fusion of mime and physical theatre explores the dark side of charity in a story about giving, as told through the eloquent movements of a cast headed by internationally acclaimed mime and movement artist Yayoi.

Sex. Lust. Power. And a hot nun? A zany, musical romp through the magical, mystical world of the seminary and the tortured Catholic mind of our hero who is headed on a collision course with the ultimate choice. Celibacy. There’s no life like It!

For anyone who can laugh. All ages, all genders. Smart, touching, surprising, and bold. A desperate actress takes over a theatre after yet another failed audition! She is an unmarried, unfulfilled, pre-menopausal diva. A name change is just what the psychiatrist ordered, but how will she explain it to her sensitive mother? Her cell phone is constantly ringing! The janitor is getting upset as the comedy escalates. The costume rack is at her disposal. Pirates, anyone? She orders pizza — it’s delivered. Dysfunctional? Yes! But, there is a surprise ending!

WWII is over and the Canadian boys have come home. They’ve gotten degrees, jobs, married, and have settled down to raise their new families. On Friday nights Paul and Ray go down to the legion, drink beer, shoot pool, and talk about goods times. But in the shadows where they play a new conflict rages and the enemy is a friend.

Written by Mila Johansen, an internationally acclaimed playwright. Thursday, Sept. 10, 7-8:00pm Friday, Sept. 11, 10:25-11:25pm Saturday, Sept. 12, 8:40-9:40pm Wednesday, Sept. 16, 5-6:00pm Saturday, Sept. 19, 10:45-11:45pm Sunday, Sept. 20, 4:35-5:35pm

Trace Morgan’s mother is dead. Trace will do whatever it takes to forget. She travels through the night and ultimately finds what she’s looking for in a familiar face — the eccentric child protégé Tracey Joy. Through space exploration, Jack Daniels, and the dreaded emotional overload, together they draw a map of human experience that transcends age and circumstance.

With Lights and Everything is the story of three aspiring actors from various parts of the world who have one goal: to be the next big Hollywood superstar. But wanting something and achieving something are two completely different things, especially in such a competitive city within such a competitive line of work.

Gender and generation, those unrepentant offspring of our selfish genes, trigger most of the ancient ongoing personal conflicts of our species. No matter when or how we live — rich, poor, urban, rural — these genetic twins make mischief with human beings everywhere. Matters Domestic presents two short plays – D.N.A. and Download — to explore this legacy of strife in our time.

The book launch for an immigrant writer in Vancouver doesn’t go exactly as planned! The writer, hunted by a mysterious character from her book, has no choice but to reveal untold stories and secrets. The play features hilarious comedy situations recognizable to anyone who has gone through the quest of self-discovery while the border of reality and imagination is no longer just blurred, but completely collapsed.

Sex, lust, love, politics, scandals, murder, deceit, betrayal, and devotion are a few of the many layers depicted in Steven Berkoff’s award-winning script. The play reveals new insights into Ophelia and Hamlet’s relationship — from their courtship to their ultimate tragedy. Innovative director, Jeremy Waller, perfectly casts on- and off-stage lovers Alicia Novak and Darren Boquist in this beautifully poetic and visually spectacular piece of theatre.

Two scientists with conflicting morals struggle to pull a virtual reality junkie caught inside VR back to real life in this one man virtuosic tour de force exploring themes of technology and isolation. Directed by Amiel Gladstone and starring Daniel Arnold, Marisa Smith, and Matthew Kowalchuk, Tape is a psychological drama about three high school friends reunited in a motel room 10 years later, confronting a life-changing event from their past. An intimate and unique theatrical experience, this production of Tape is a site-specific performance where the audience is led into the actual motel room, directly into the world of the play. Secrets are revealed, relationships changed, and truth is elusive . . . even when it’s on tape.

How does the Oxford English Dictionary define “bootylicious”? Is Helvetica really a fascist typeface? Can I get an STD from unprotected twittering? Find horribly unscientific answers to these and more imperative questions of our time in a modern adaptation of a classic from the Dada movement. Aptly described by its author as “the greatest three act hoax of the century,” The Gas Heart searches through the skivvies of our society to reveal the senselessness in our world today: politics, pop culture, and potato chips in 2009.

One giant girl. One huge dream. One massive adventure. From the artists who brought you last year’s Pick of the Fringe hit, The Shakespeare Show, comes this puppet-ational, inspirational, and heartwarming tale about a girl who just wants to dance. “There are few things funnier than Tara Travis and Ryan Gladstone.” — Plank Magazine “Wildly funny, wonderfully crafted, and brilliantly acted. Flawless!” — CBC Starring Tara Travis with direction and dramaturgy from Fringe superstar Ryan Gladstone.

Wacky, irreverent, and as entertaining today as it was when it first opened in 1879, The Pirates of Penzance spins a hilarious musical farce of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers, dewy-eyed daughters, and an eccentric Major-General, all morally bound to the often ridiculous dictates of honour and duty.

“Ignorance is Strength; War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; All Hail Big Brother!” A powerful depiction of a society where Big Brother is always watching — where everything that is not prohibited is compulsory.

“****” — Winnipeg Sun “**** Teeninga accomplishes an impressive feat . . . She wrings actual suspense from her humanistic story, and displays a poet’s gift . . . she holds our attention with her talent alone.” — Winnipeg Free Press

Faith: a strong or unshakable belief in something, especially without proof or evidence. Sounds like the perfect arena for these two fools. Play along with Billy and Balthar and take a hilarious journey together down the road of faith. Their journey is full of the twists, turns, fun, irreverence, and spontaneity of the clown’s universe. If you don’t have faith . . .

A darkly comic one-woman show about a betrayed friend, a conniving fern, and a 19 year old girl whose twisted journey brought them all together. Drop in on Elizabeth as she recounts her experiences with this crazy concept we call love — how it’s found, how it’s lost, and how it’s butchered.

Two stories and ten characters interweave in this critically acclaimed, audience-loved, one-woman gem about immigration, ethnic tensions, and glittering jewels!

What happens when the kids leave home? For John Pippus, the answer was recovering his musical roots. This one-man dramatic comedy explores growing up in 1950s Winnipeg, surprising musical influences, and the craziness of life on the road and beyond. The Vancouver Province says singer/songwriter John Pippus is “a refined tunesmith with serious pop hooks.”

A Canadian cowboy comedy! The life of Louis Riel, viewed from seven different points of view in another historically hysterical comedy.

An author travels to a remote location to investigate a haunted house and write the biography of a ghost. Instead of curing her writer’s block, she finds herself in an intense relationship with the dead. A psychological ghost story featuring dark humour and twisted love, this is a exploration of the power we have for creation and destruction. Written by Andrew Templeton (Portia, My Love, This Mortal Flesh), directed by Jeremy Waller; featuring Heather Lindsay and Simon Driver.

Completely sold-out run in 2008! Held over 2008, 2006, and 2002 (The Shakespeare Show, Jesus Christ: The Lost Years, The Canada Show).

His dog just died, his best friend is a pot head, his ex-girlfriend is in juvie, and he’s questioning his sexuality — just another day on the block. If you’ve ever wondered what happened to Charlie Brown, Linus, Sally, and the rest of the gang, this is the show for you.

A cop investigates the case of a missing girl, which leads him to her bodacious bus driver desperate to protect his kids, a stuttering, childlike shoe salesman, and an egotistical ER doctor.

Two award-winning comedians. Eight and a half sketches. Are the sketches award winning? No. Because they’re new! So get ready for this hilarious adventure following two members of a spoiled generation that refuse to grow up. Peter and Chris (ITSAZOO, Atomic Vaudeville) will do good deeds to your funny bone. In 3-D!!

Spending two hours a day with work colleagues in a cramped vehicle can take its toll. Four private school teachers commute everyday to their school in the Lower Mainland. The cramped quarters of the carpool force them to unwillingly reveal deep, personal, and private information that not even their close friends or partners know about them. Is the small amount of money they save on gas worth the pain that they endure on a daily basis?

A hapless delivery driver is on a search for meaning in his job, life, and relationships. Unable to find any solace, he copes through a bizarre mix of artistic endeavors. A comedic solo show.

Adrian Mancini gives a visceral performance as all four characters in this haunting, moving play about childhood, living up to your potential, and listening to that voice in your head.

The language of clothes. Why we wear, what we wear, and when we wear it! A parade of characters stroll and strut their fashion. Mayhem and love spice the runway with all the complexity of intentions behind the clothes we wear. Dramaturgy by Joanna Garfinkel.

Get your buzz on! Mentored by some of the innovative professional companies behind the original HIVE shows, senior and graduating students from SFU, UBC, and Studio 58 create and perform six short theatre pieces for small audiences in continuous rotation. It’s a sweet and sticky collaborative honeycomb! Grab a drink from the bar and see what these new bees have in store for you.

Once, a mysterious woman became a King’s favorite. Their son desired an underwater Princess and when the land Prince and water Princess met on an island under the full moon, they immediately fell in love. But there was a terrible misunderstanding. The Princess cursed the Prince (turning him into a pretty bird) and he then had a VERY eventful journey home. In the end, the Prince and Princess lived together happily ever after. How’d it all happen, you ask? Come listen and find out!

Clare Morgan is a mild-mannered church secretary by day. Behind Niamh — a locally fashioned Celtic harp appropriately painted black — she is Clarity, an alternative singer-songwriter. Having stolen her voice back from the Wicked Witch of Mediocrity, she seeks to escape its clutches by soul-stirring (and sometimes foot-stomping) original music. Bring your tallest Mohawk and your blackest leather to this event.

Throughout the festival and throughout the year, the Fringe just couldn’t get by without the hard work and enthusiasm of our volunteers. A gigantic thank you to all of our 2009 volunteers! We couldn’t do it without you. If you would like to volunteer, please contact volunteer@vancouverfringe.com.
