if you’re new to the Vancouver international fringe festival, you’re in for a treat! if the fringe has been your favourite festival for the past 24 years, then this is merely a reminder of how to fringe!

The Fringe is an equal opportunity theatre festival. All 67 shows in this year’s Festival were selected by lottery or on a first-come, first-served basis. That means that it’s up to you, the audience, to decide what’s hot and what’s not! 1. find your prograM. If you found this program on a bus and want another, then you can find copies at community centres, theatres, and Fringe friendly businesses. You can also find copies at Blenz locations. Or you can download a copy from our website at www.vancouverfringe.com. 2. piCk your sHoWs. Get a pencil and start circling! Or head to our website and search by show title, date, or venue. Taking risks is what the Fringe is all about, so be spontaneous! Use the master schedule in our fancy new pull out section as a guide. For the real Fringe feel, try seeing two or more shows per evening! 3. get your tiCkets. Tickets are available online through our website at www.vancouverfringe.com or at the Fringe Box Office (powered by Mac Station) in the parking lot next to the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island. Keep your eyes peeled for the half price ticket symbol for a great deal or try to get a Frequent Fringer Pass ($80 for 10 different shows!). Frequent Fringer Passes are limited so hop to it! Check the Ticket Information section on page 6 for details. Half price ticket symbol 4. get a MeMbersHip. Without your annual membership fee, there simply could not be a festival! 100% of the regular ticket price of each show goes directly to the artists. Memberships can be purchased online or at any venue for $5. 5. gatHer your friends. Facebook, Twitter, the phone, carrier pigeon . . . however you gather your people, do it! Meet up at the St. Ambroise Fringe Bar at Agro Café, share stories, hear show buzz, let other people convince you about must see performances, and go see them! 6. get in line. If there are tickets left for sale, you can find them at the venue 50 minutes before show time. Seating is general admission, so line up early for the best seats. Line ups also make a great grapevine. Spread the word through conversations with your line-mates, or simply eavesdrop. For more ticket info, turn to page 6. 7. get tHe inside sCoop. It is a great honour to be sitting at the helm in our 25th year. One of my great pleasures as Executive Director is having chance meetings with people who’ve had a connection with the Fringe Festival over the years. These connections often start with the confession, “I was in a Fringe show,” or sometimes, “Oh I know someone who was in a Fringe show.” My favourite such encounter was with a woman I met at a community gathering on Commercial Drive. She smiled as she recalled fond memories of the Fringe. I could see she was sorting through her brain’s filing cabinet — she then paused as if she was finding a file she hadn’t previously noticed before. “Oh, I was in a Fringe show! I had forgotten!” she said. She then laughed and we went on discussing the Fringe. It was such a pleasure to be present for the moment she recovered this memory. I suppose this comes with the territory of becoming a festival with a long history. What an achievement it is to reside in people’s memory banks. GETTING TO FRINGE

Granville Island is the Vancouver International Fringe Festival’s hub. With restaurants, a public food market, pubs, live theatres, galleries, art studios, and shops, the Island offers a lot to do between Fringe Shows. Its relaxed atmosphere surrounded by mountains and ocean make Granville Island the perfect stage for outstanding theatre at the Fringe. Located in the heart of Vancouver, Granville Island (under the south side of the Granville Street Bridge) is easily accessible through a variety of means. If you are attending shows at other Fringe venues, including BYOVs, please refer to the websites listed below to help you plan your trip.

Walking, CyCling, and alternate transportation The seaside path is always a treat and gets you right to Granville Island and the Fringe! A bike is also a fantastic way to navigate the Fringe. publiC transit The Fringe is easily accessible by bus. The #50 bus goes straight to Granville Island from Waterfront Station thru downtown along Granville Street and on to False Creek South. Otherwise the #4, #7, #10, #16, #17, or #98 all stop on the south side of the Granville Street bridge, where a leisurely stroll through the Granville Street Bridge Pedestrian Underpass and across the Granville Loop Park will find you in the heartland of the Fringe in no time. parking After 7:00pm, parking on Granville Island is free and without time constraint — including in all the pay lots! Between 7:00am and 7:00pm, free timelimited parking is available in designated areas around the Island. During those hours, a vehicle may park for a maximum of only three hours (and in certain spots, only one hour). Moving to another spot is permitted as long as the total time parked on the Island does not exceed three hours. If you want to extend your stay, we recommend that you move into a pay lot to purchase the extra time needed. Vehicles parked overtime will be ticketed.

aquabus The Aquabus operates from approximately 6:40am to 9:30pm daily (please check www.theaquabus.com/ routesandfares.htm for specific route schedules). Aquabus ferries offer various routes both to and from Granville Island and depart from locations around False Creek. The Aquabus offers complimentary ferry service from 4:00pm till closing to Fringe patrons

oanna Maratta, founder of the Vancouver International Fringe Festival, had never even heard of “Fringe” when the application for the Edmonton Fringe Festival arrived at the First Vancouver Theatrespace Society (FVTS) loft in Gastown. But that application sparked the idea that Vancouver should host its own festival, and now, 25 years later, Vancouver’s Fringe Festival is the second oldest Fringe Festival in Canada. Prior to that fateful day, Joanna, along with a team of collaborators, had been running the FVTS since 1983. Their initial goal was to bring professional theatre people together to network and have a space to produce events. They felt a need to create a focal point for Vancouver’s theatre community. “It was a very dynamic time. There were a lot of people doing different things in different spaces. A lot of people were doing new work,” Joanna says. Nevertheless reviewers and audiences often wouldn’t catch on until it was too late and the productions had been cancelled—or worse yet, they had closed

down for violating fire codes or city bylaws. Creating a Fringe Festival in Vancouver enabled the FVTS to extend their goal. Not only would a festival strengthen the city’s theatre community by allowing its members to produce experimental productions in a setting surrounded by peers, but it would make attending the theatre more accessible for the general public. Hence, the mandate “Theatre for Everyone” was born. The Vancouver Fringe Festival began in 1985. It was centred in Mount Pleasant and held its opening ceremonies in the parking lot of an IGA. There was face painting, a chicken BBQ, and a sock hop! The 220 performances were held in seven venues with 4,000 people in attendance— and only 25 volunteers helping out! Anchor venues in Mount Pleasant included the Western Front, Heritage Hall, and later, for the Fringe Bar, the Mount Pleasant Legion. “On a Saturday night there could be as many as 1,000 people jamming the Fringe Club drinking beer and having great conversations about all things related to theatre and the arts. And [it was] a place for lots of

Fringe romances too,” Joanna reveals. But there were other, less conventional venues as well. “The Fringe became about converting space into theatres and that was interesting for artists, audiences, and Fringe organizers. Our technical and production staff were amazing innovators and adapters,” Joanna says, explaining their use of parking garages and other unique places.

. . . 25 years later, Vancouver’s Fringe Festival is the second oldest in Canada. The staff’s office spaces also reflected the “spirit of converting interesting space,” Joanna explained. The Fringe’s first office was Joanna’s VW Bug and a table at Bert’s Restaurant on Main. Next, they were in the flatiron building on Main and Kingsway. “We moved in in 1986 and bought our office furniture at the auction sale of Expo ‘86. Linda Gorrie [the Fringe’s General Manager from 1984 to 1988] and I had great fun bidding and buying and outfitting all the offices,” Joanna shares.

There was more fun to be had in the long hallway of that office where chair races and bowling were a common occurrence. “Main Street really did represent all of our learning and growth. And it was a neighbourhood festival,” Joanna remarks. Nevertheless, having two main roads (Main Street and Kingsway) running through the centre of the Festival put a damper on things, and once the Fringe reached a certain size, it had to look for a new home anyway. In 1995 the Fringe relocated. “We needed to grow and change and Commercial Drive was a neighbourhood that offered more diversity,” Joanna recalls. “We became ‘Alive on the Drive.’” The Fringe’s first home on the Drive was above the novelty shop where Havana Restaurant is located today. Known as the Production Palace, it was a hub for staff, volunteers, and others. The years on Commercial Drive introduced the Fringe to new features like Bring Your Own Venue (BYOV). There were also parades, children’s activities, pay by “pass the hat” shows, a craft tent, and Drag Bingo!

“The mandate of the Fringe or First Vancouver Theatrespace is ‘Theatre for Everyone.’ What does that mean? What does that look like? How do you deliver that?” says Karen Planden-Jeffery (née Planden), the Fringe’s Executive Director from 1998-2000, explaining the thought process behind the move from Commercial Drive to Granville Island. In the millennial year, the Fringe took the plunge into False Creek to see how other areas of the city might embrace the unique festival born in Mount Pleasant and raised on the Drive. The Fringe was ready to release its pubescent self into the centre of the city. Besides having venues on Granville Island and back on the Drive, there were also venues in Yaletown, which is where the Fringe Bar ended up. Despite not having a centralized location, ticket sales jumped by 25 per cent over the previous year’s sales. By 2001, the Fringe was primarily centralized on Granville Island. Its opening ceremony that year included a courageous parade around the Island — one that went against the flow of one way traffic!

Regardless of location, the Fringe has always embodied passion for entertainment without boundaries — one that participating artists, volunteers, and audience members hold in common. “While ‘unjuried’ is certainly our cornerstone, the word ‘unjuried’ is not exactly an every day word. I’m pretty sure Fringe festivals made it up,” current Executive Director David Jordan says, explaining what has sustained the Fringe’s energy over 25 years. “People are still flabbergasted and frankly disbelieving when I tell them that we literally pick the line up out of hat. The way I like to explain the Fringe is that we make the audience take on the role of Artistic Director simply by choosing which shows they will see.” The Vancouver International Fringe Festival now includes over 450 performances, six mainstage venues, 10 BYOVs and up to 30,000 people in attendance — with 400 volunteers helping to pull it all together. All throughout these 25 years the main aspects of the festival have remained the same. The Fringe is a place to find unjuried, uncensored theatre for everyone!

FRINGE AWARDS NIGHT In addition to announcing the Public Market Pick of the Fringe, we’ll also be presenting new awards! The Fringe and The Cultch will be unveiling the “Cultchivating the Future Award,” while Plank Magazine will offer up the “Talk of the Fringe Award.” The new “Joanna Maratta Award” honours those who best exhibit the founding spirit of the Vancouver Fringe Festival. The “25th Anniversary Award” will celebrate outstanding contribution to our first quarter century. Other awards include the coveted “Most Misleading Title Award” and the “Nasty Award.” Tickets are free but must be

PUBLIC MARKET PICK OF THE FRINGE The Public Market Pick of the Fringe is picked by you! Every time you go to a performance, you’ll get a ballot to rate the show. These ballots will be collected at the venues’ exits. Winners will be announced at the Fringe Awards Night on September 20. Tickets for the Pick go on sale that night at midnight. The Public Market Pick of the Fringe will be held at the Waterfront Theatre from September 24-27.

ST. AMBROISE FRINGE BAR AT AGRO CAFÉ St. Ambroise Fringe Bar at Agro Café is a great place to meet your fellow Fringers before, after, and in between shows to gossip about what you’ve seen. You can also try something tasty from Agro’s menu. We’ll be moving the furniture to make way for DJ dance parties on Fridays and Saturdays. And who knows, you might meet someone special (like your new life partner or Ian McKellan). It’s happened at Fringe bars in the past (on both accounts)! And of course, there’ll also be fancy beer from “The Beer Professionals” at St. Ambroise! This is a must for all Fringers so be sure to come by the Agro Café at 1363 Railspur Alley (see map on page 26).

OPENING NIGHT GALA Experience the excitement of the pre-festival party, mingle with artists and other Fringe enthusiasts, and participate in supporting the Fringe Festival by bidding in our auction. And you’ll get a sneak peek at a handful of the 67 different shows in this year’s line up. Tickets are $40. Doors open at 7:00pm on September 9, at the Granville Island Stage located at 1585 Johnston Street.

TICKET INFORMATION (AN ABRIDGED VERSION) Tickets go on sale online at www.vancouverfringe.com on Saturday, August 1, 2009 where 100% of tickets are available in advance. Many shows will sell out, so place your bets now. In person ticket sales are available at the Fringe Box Office (powered by Mac Station) from August 15, 2009 throughout the festival. She is an unmarried, unfulfilled, pre-menopausal diva. A name change is just what the psychiatrist ordered, but how will she explain it to her sensitive mother? Her cell phone is constantly ringing! The janitor is getting upset as the comedy escalates. The costume rack is at her disposal. Pirates, anyone? She orders pizza — it’s delivered. Dysfunctional? Yes! But, there is a surprise ending!

WWII is over and the Canadian boys have come home. They’ve gotten degrees, jobs, married, and have settled down to raise their new families. An author travels to a remote location to investigate a haunted house and write the biography of a ghost. Instead of curing her writer’s block, she finds herself in an intense relationship with the dead. A psychological ghost story featuring dark humour and twisted love, this is a exploration of the power we have for creation and destruction. Spending two hours a day with work colleagues in a cramped vehicle can take its toll. Four private school teachers commute everyday to their school in the Lower Mainland. The cramped quarters of the carpool force them to unwillingly reveal deep, personal, and private information that not even their close friends or partners know about them. Is the small amount of money they save on gas worth the pain that they endure on a daily basis?

A hapless delivery driver is on a search for meaning in his job, life, and relationships. Unable to find any solace, he copes through a bizarre mix of artistic endeavors. A comedic solo show.

Adrian Mancini gives a visceral performance as all four characters in this haunting, moving play about childhood, living up to your potential, and listening to that voice in your head.

Once, a mysterious woman became a King’s favorite. Their son desired an underwater Princess and when the land Prince and water Princess met on an island under the full moon, they immediately fell in love. But there was a terrible misunderstanding. The Princess cursed the Prince (turning him into a pretty bird) and he then had a VERY eventful journey home. In the end, the Prince and Princess lived together happily ever after. How’d it all happen, you ask? Come listen and find out!

Clare Morgan is a mild-mannered church secretary by day. Behind Niamh — a locally fashioned Celtic harp appropriately painted black — she is Clarity, an alternative singer-songwriter. Having stolen her voice back from the Wicked Witch of Mediocrity, she seeks to escape its clutches by soul-stirring (and sometimes foot-stomping) original music. Bring your tallest Mohawk and your blackest leather to this event.
