MASTER SCHEDULE 34-38
How to Fringe The Fringe is a time to gorge on theatre, but we know that selecting shows can be a daunting task. There are many ways to choose your shows:
Be Meticulous: Read every single description and pick your favourites. Be Random: Fringe shows are chosen by lottery or on a first come, first served method—so just go with the flow. Choose Based on Your Schedule: Figure out when you can come to the Festival, then, check out the Master Schedule on page 34 to see what’s on at that time.
Visit the Fringe Info Centre: Our Info Centre staff and volunteers can give you the scoop on what people are talking about and help you pick a show that you’ll like. See page 6 for more info!
ARTS UMBRELLA
Venue Flag:
Shows at Mainstage Venues don’t have a flag. Check the top left corner of the page or section to see which venue these shows are at. Bring Your Own Venue (BYOVs) shows are at venues all over town and the venue is listed in the flag. Check out page 10-11 for all venue locations.
Show Title Production Company / Artist Where the artists are from Playwright Website (if they have one) Show Description:
Did you know artists write their own show descriptions?
Reviews:
Some artists choose to include reviews of their show or of past shows as well as awards they’ve received.
Symbols:
Artists have self-selected if their shows are Deaf or Hard of Hearing Friendly or Low Vision Friendly. See the Accessibility section on page 6 for more info. The PAL symbols indicates shows that have chosen to donate part of their sales to the Performing Arts Lodge. See page 7 for details. Some performances are half-price. Keep a look out for the half-price symbol and score a deal on tickets.
WHAT ARE WE: A MUSICAL Awkward Banana Dates Theatre Vancouver, Canada Playwrights: Jimmy bananasmakebetterspouses.com Ever looked at your banana and thought “I wonder what it would be like to date you?” Here is the answer to that question and to so many more. Winner of the 2016 Just for Laughs Best Comedy Award. “What Are We: A Musical raises deep, soul-searching questions such as ‘Why aren’t I dating a banana? and ‘Could a banana be a better lover than my current partner?’” —The New York Times “I went and proposed to my banana after seeing this.” —Torontoist
Show Type / Length / Age Guideline / Warnings:
Artists select show types to give you an idea of what to expect beyond the comedy/drama monikers. The running time is important if you’re trying to catch another show later. Artists also self-select what they think are appropriate age guidelines. Warnings include notes on content or effects that may not be suitable for all theatregoers.

INFORMATION
WELCOME TO THE FRINGE Dear Fringe Family, I am at once full of excitement and sadness to announce that this year will be my 12th and final Festival as Executive Director. Following the Festival, I am leaving to pursue a new career opportunity. It was a very difficult decision to make. My personal and professional life—and indeed my identity—have become intentionally and lovingly entwined with Fringe. As perhaps was painfully obvious in my first couple of years at the helm, I was on a steep learning curve! My success was only possible during that time because of the support I received from the entire Fringe community. Over the past decade we have built a resilient and forward looking organization that cultivates theatre and theatre artists and invites a curious audience to share in the excitement of theatre incubation. In making my decision, at first I had a hard time imagining myself outside of the Fringe. Others in my close circle have told me that they can hardly imagine the Fringe without me. But of course, the Fringe is so much bigger than me. I have been a steward, a shepherd, and a nurturer, but this beautiful mission of cultivating participation in theatre existed before and will carry on after me. Indeed the mission existed in our community before the Fringe organization was born to fulfill it. So come September we will embrace each other once more and the Fringe will wrap us in its embrace. And together we will embrace a new future, one full of possibilities. The Fringe has momentum. Over the past year we have focused on laying the ground work for an exciting new diversity strategy, which I expect will shape the future of the Fringe. Other year-round initiatives like Theatre Wire continue to evolve and grow to build our community beyond the Festival. Being the Fringe’s Executive Director has been infinitely rewarding. I began my job in 2006, thinking I was an event producer. I leave it in 2017, knowing that I was a community leader. I learned everything I know about arts leadership because you gave me this opportunity and accepted me wholeheartedly. I know that my Fringe life will continue to inspire and guide me for the rest of my life. Thank you a thousand times. Fringefully Yours,
David Jordan
Executive Director Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society
Being the president of a board means stewarding our mission, presiding over meetings, and ensuring we are serving the community. The past year has been an exciting one for me as all of these activities have culminated in a diversity audit. This initiative will help us determine what our vision of Theatre for Everyone means now and in the future. We are excited about evaluating our programs through a diversity lens and making changes to increase diversity on our stages in the coming years. I hope you enjoy this year’s lineup and our greatly expanded musical offerings at the Fringe Bar. Thanks to Creative BC for making this initiative possible as well as all our public and private funders that support our mission of cultivating artists and audiences to create an open and vibrant independent theatre community! Happy Fringe!
Andrew Westman
Board President Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society
Each year over 200 Fringe Festivals across the world showcase hundreds of thousands of artists and performers. 19 million people see approximately 170 thousand performers in 60,000 free and ticketed events. There are so many different forms of Fringe Festival, no two are the same and they never repeat themselves.
Vancouver Fringe Festival
Vancouver Fringe is a shining example of what Fringe Festivals do best; share, support, explore, and celebrate culture. Fringes are an important part of the creative food chain, presenting and discovering the stars of the future. They reflect the personality of the cities and towns in which they reside, embracing the past, present, and future of its local community. You will experience an explosion of performance with artists coming from near and far for your pleasure and enjoyment. Get involved and witness the action, hear the stories of travels, see exploratory, cutting edge, accessible, and innovative performance right on your doorstep. Take a chance on the Fringe, it makes dreams happen!
Holly Lombardo Managing Director World Fringe
From humble beginnings in Edinburgh in 1947, the Fringe movement has developed into a global network of festivals over the last 70 years, with Fringes now taking place on every continent except Antarctica. 2017 promises to be a very exciting year in Fringe history as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and join with our sister Fringes around the globe to celebrate 70 years of the Fringe movement. I hope that anyone who has attended, performed at, or been involved in organising a Fringe will take the opportunity to share their Fringe stories on World Fringe Day.
Shona McCarthy
Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society
On behalf of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF), welcome to the adventure that is Fringe. CAFF is comprised of 33 member festivals across North America with a mission to foster independent artistic exploration for artists and audiences alike. The Fringe is truly a feast for the artistically curious. This past November CAFF played host to the World Fringe Congress, which gave us a chance to show off our “Made in Canada” model of Fringing. Over 53 international festivals participated and festival organizers marveled at CAFF’s accessible and inclusive model that returns 100% of the ticket price back to artists (minus taxes and fees). This year the Edinburgh Fringe celebrates its 70th anniversary and the global Fringe family celebrates with you! Thank you for supporting the wild and wonderful movement that is Fringe. I hope you have a wonderful festival.
Kelly Straughan
President Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals
Welcome to the 2017 Vancouver Fringe Festival. Throughout 2017, Canadians across the country will celebrate Canada 150 by taking part in activities and events that showcase our heritage and our cultural diversity. The Vancouver Fringe Festival gives residents and visitors the chance to enjoy innovative performances by Canadian artists. Our government is proud to support this Festival, which celebrates “theatre for everyone” while helping to create jobs, boost tourism, and enrich Vancouver’s cultural landscape. As Minister of Canadian Heritage, I would like to thank the Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society, the talented performers, and the dedicated volunteers who helped make this year’s Festival a success, both on stage and behind the scenes. Enjoy the show!
Mélanie Joly
Minister of Canadian Heritage
Prepare to enjoy daring and unpredictable artists and innovative performances at the 2017 Vancouver Fringe Festival, a cultural gem for theatre lovers craving the excitement of experimental theatre. From September 7 to 17, this exhilarating event features more than 700 performances by over 90 artists taking their original acts onto the stage to the delight of more than 40,000 attendees. Thank you to all of the organizers and more than 500 volunteers that work so hard in support of this Festival which provides an excellent vehicle for audience engagement and celebrating professional theatre. Thank you for sparking innovation and pushing creative boundaries, adding so much to the vitality and dynamism of British Columbia’s arts scene.
Merla Beckerman
Chair of the BC Arts Council
On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver and my colleagues on City Council, I want to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending the 2017 Vancouver Fringe Festival. The Fringe Festival is one of the leading cultural organizations in Vancouver that has been at the forefront at showcasing new talent since 1985. The Fringe Festival’s mission was to open the door to artists of all genres and formats and allow the exchange of expression to flow freely—this has created one the best art festivals in Vancouver. Congratulations to all the staff and over 500 volunteers who work so hard to create a successful Festival. To all the artists, directors, producers, crews, and audiences taking part in this year’s event, I trust you will find the 2017 Vancouver Fringe Festival to be entertaining and enlightening. Sincerely,
Gregor Robertson

INFORMATION
GETTING TO THE FRINGE
Granville Island is the Vancouver Fringe Festival’s main hub! Most Mainstage venues, the Fringe Box Office, and the Big Rock Brewery Fringe Bar are on Granville Island. With restaurants, the Public Market, live theatres, galleries, art studios, and shops, the Island offers a lot to do between Fringe shows. Its relaxed atmosphere surrounded by mountains and ocean makes Granville Island the perfect stage for outstanding theatre at the Fringe. Located in the heart of Vancouver, Granville Island (under the south side of the Granville Street Bridge) is easily accessible through a variety of means.
PUBLIC TRANSIT The Fringe is easily accessible by bus. The #50 bus goes straight to Granville Island from Waterfront Station through downtown along Granville Street, or from the Olympic Village Station. The #84 stops on 4th avenue and Fir street, a short walk from the Island. Otherwise the #4, #7, #10, #14, or #16 all stop on the south side of the Granville Street bridge, where a leisurely stroll through the Granville Street Bridge Pedestrian Underpass and across the Granville Loop Park will find you in the heartland of the Fringe. For more personalized transit information and trip planning go to translink.ca or call 604.953.3333 (from 6:30am to 11:30pm).
PARKING After 7:00pm, parking is free and without time constraint in most parking spots on Granville Island! Between 7:00am and 7:00pm, free time limited parking is available in designated areas around the Island. During those hours, a vehicle may park for a maximum of three hours (and in certain spots, only one hour). If you want to extend your stay, we recommend that you move into a pay lot and purchase the extra time needed. Vehicles parked overtime will be ticketed.
TAXI Taxis are often found outside the Granville Island Public Market.
FERRY The Aquabus and False Creek Ferries operate from approximately 6:30am to 10:30pm daily and make for a lovely way to get to and from Granville Island. For more information including schedules, tickets, and maps, visit the theaquabus.com and granvilleislandferries.bc.ca.

first met David Jordan in 2007, as I was writing about the upcoming Fringe Festival for SFU’s student newspaper, The Peak. I set up an interview and we sat at a picnic table on Granville Island where we talked about the upcoming Festival. I remember thinking David was so young. How could he run the Fringe? Little did I know, David had only stepped into the role of Executive Director the year before. Prior to that, he served as the Artist Services Coordinator, a role which required him to meet artists and make sure they met deadlines. Then he worked as the Interim Executive Director, a role he held for five months before garnering the position on a permanent basis. The Fringe was facing hard times with a $100,000 deficit—and David openly admits that he had a lot of learning to do when he started. But his patience, charm, and dedication carried him through. Isabella Kessel, who served as Festival Manager from 2007 to 2013, remembers meeting David during her job interview, and also thinking he was so young. “Then he smiled at me and made me feel welcome,” she recalls. “I was pretty sure we would get along, which proved to be right. He was the best and most fun boss and colleague I’ve ever had!”
14
Getting into the spirit in 2007.
The staff team in general was young then (and continues to be since we rely on grants to hire seasonal staff), and many were just starting their

careers. Isabella remembers how in 2008, the Designer, Zuzia Juszkiewicz (who created the now infamous Jimmy mascot) was working on one of her first big projects—the Festival program guide. “David and Zuzia had to pull a night shift with pizza and beer,” Isabella remembers. “David took on the role of supporter, coach, councillor, and caterer. They managed to finish it around 5:00am and it was a thing of sheer beauty. That’s the kind of thing David would do to make things work.” In the spring of 2009, I met David for a second time, when I came in for my job interview. He loved that I knew everything about the Fringe after having written that article. I was thrilled when David and Isabella offered me the Communications Coordinator position. It was meant to be a year-long contract, but when the Liberal Provincial Government drastically cut arts funding, my position became seasonal. 2009 and 2010 turned into the years of wearing grey square buttons as a symbolic protest and asking people to write to their MLAs to reconsider funding cuts. It was also the period that David, alongside the Director of Development Gareth Duncan, had to make serious strides to increase donations. “David stood front and centre in the Fringe’s fundraising efforts with a very personal account of the importance of the arts and the potential impacts of cuts,” Gareth points out. “This contributed to a record number of gifts and helped launch years of growing support from the Fringe community.” Since 2009, individual donations have gone up from just $2,000 a year to an astonishing $65,000! Individual donations remain a crucial part of the Fringe’s funding and continue to grow in significance every year. What I remember most about those early days though, was working hard and playing hard. I marvel at how much work was accomplished in that hot little office despite random tourists walking in to ask about parking regulations and directions to the Market. And then there was all the dancing. We danced so much at the Fringe Bar—even dancing in the puddles in a late summer storm at the 2010 Festival. Provincial funding was eventually
restored and David worked hard to bring down the deficit over the years. When he sat me down in 2011 and asked me to come on year-round, I was amazed. I remember asking him if he was sure. The Fringe had started to feel like family long before that, but this seemed official. I’m sure David felt the same way. Isabella recalls him joking one day, saying, “‘Guys, I spend more time with you than with my family! It’s a lot of fun, but that’s crazy!’” It was true—at least leading up to the Festival. Many people have rolled through the Fringe over the years and become part of the Fringe family. It’s the nature of a seasonal event. A lucky few are year-round, others return Festival after Festival, while some are just here briefly—including the artists,
Director of the Vancouver Fringe, David took on the role of President for the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF) from 2010 to 2016. During that time, he successfully bid to host the Fringe World Congress outside of Edinburgh for the first time ever, highlighting the value of the Canadian Fringe circuit to Fringe organizers around the world. In 2015, David won one of Business in Vancouver’s prestigious 40 Under 40 spots. “Under Jordan’s direction,” they wrote, “the festival has climbed out of debt, nearly doubled attendance, doubled revenue and quadrupled sponsorship revenues.” Since that honour, David’s done even more for the Fringe. He initiated yearround programming and support for

volunteers, donors, and patrons—and each has made a mark on the Fringe. David has been a stalwart figure for 12 years; a “frolleague” (friend/colleague) as Managing Director Shantini Klaassen would say—and yes, even a sort of Fringe dad. Then there was the Fringe when David’s wife Bethan Stewart was due to have a baby mid-Festival. We had backup plans in case he had to leave and even had a radio code known only to staff: the egg has hatched. Jasper was born on September 11, 2012, David and Bethan’s third child, with the Fringe happily taking a backseat to the occasion. David has been a dedicated Fringe leader. In addition to being the Executive
independent theatre producers through Theatre Wire, which is now entering its third full season (see pages 32-33). And we’re in the early stages of the Diversity and Inclusion Project, which seeks to connect the Fringe to culturally diverse and underrepresented communities in Vancouver, to build mentorship for current and future theatrical creators in these communities, and to celebrate this work as a flourishing aspect of the Fringe. We’ll be announcing more about the Diversity and Inclusion Project as details develop. David’s done a lot for the Fringe. And while he may not be the boss after this Festival, he’ll always be a huge part of this organization—and a part of the Fringe family.

Shy Therapy at a Nude Beach
(indoor play) In the spring after the 1917 revolution, Russians rushed out to creeks and ponds, feeling more free than ever to skinny dip. Now, 100 years later, come to this comedy-drama about Vancouver’s world-famous nude beach. Will the audience strip off for the thrill of it—and to protest war and sexism? Watch the therapists cure volunteer clothoholics from the audience! In 2011, the therapists invented peer-counselling ‘shy therapy’ at Wreck Beach. This healing is cheaper, quicker, better, and funnier than shrinks and pills. Earn a Bare Bum Certificate. The only happy play about Wreck Beach! Most have been brain-washed that our glorious bodies are bad, clothes are indispensable, and breastfeeding is dispensable. Those myths lead to gawking, shame, conflict, illness, and misery. About nudism (naturism), shyness, acceptance, beauty, bikinis, and burqas. Uplifting, radical, intellectual! No sex, touch, violence, or photography. Nudity throughout (optional). Warning: possible clothing. Each show different—attend often.

INFORMATION
WORLD FRINGE DAY by Ada Sin and Deanna Cheng
2
In the words of Holly Lombardo, the Managing Director of World Fringe, “World Fringe Day will bring focus to the hard work and passion that people put into making Fringes all over the world happen. Fringes are known for innovation, igniting creative genius, and supplying the creative food chain with the stars of the future. And indeed there will be much to celebrate, as Fringe Festivals worldwide have altogether transcended boundaries, pushed conventional norms, and brought people together through the sheer power of arts, culture, and theatre. From these values was born the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF). In 1982, CAFF held its first festival in Edmonton, where the innovative format of the Edmonton Fringe Festival quickly spread across the United States and Canada. Their mission to unite,
support, and empower the made-inCanada model of theatre is now alive in 21 festivals across the country. Currently, Canada has more Fringe Festivals than any other country in the world, including our very own Fringe in Vancouver. The Vancouver Fringe Festival didn’t start until 38 years after the first Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Originally located in Mount Pleasant, the Festival held 220 performances in seven venues with 4,000 people in attendance. Today, the Vancouver Fringe Festival is BC’s largest theatre festival and sees over 700 performances and attracts over 40,000 attendees annually, taking over venues on and around Granville Island and East Vancouver. Our “Theatre for Everyone” vision sees novices and veterans working side by side to break down traditional boundaries to create un-juried, uncensored theatre.
A huge part of the success of any Fringe Festival lies in its strong principles of artistic freedom and openness; ideas are celebrated and everyone is welcome at the Fringe. Because of this, Fringe Festivals continue to meet and exceed expectations every year, breaking ground and inspiring patrons, artists, volunteers, staff, and all those who let the Fringe touch their lives.

017 marks the 70th anniversary of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s very first Fringe! When eight theatre companies arrived uninvited to the Edinburgh International Festival, the Fringe concept was born. Despite not being on the Festival’s official program, the groups were unfazed and proceeded to stage shows “on the fringe” of the Festival. Fast forward 70 years, and there are now more than 200 Fringes across the world: Australia, France, South Africa, Brazil, China, and so many more. 2017 marks the very first World Fringe Day, an international day to celebrate all things Fringe on July 11. This day will not only be an opportunity to come together with all the Fringes around the world, but also to demonstrate the collective power and reach of Fringe Festivals.

THE MERKIN SISTERS
GIVE IT UP
Daughters of the now-defunct Merkin Empire, these formerlyfamous sisters leave the house for the first time in a decade as they risk everything to present their Ultimate Work of Art. Think Olsen Twins meets Grey Gardens meets the Muppets.
Morgan Brayton has it all! Well, she has questions about it all. Where is her husband Scott Baio? When is SNL going to call? What happened to her big break? Did she miss it? Is this it? Will there be snacks? Outlandish characters and true stories combine for big laughs from this award-winning but still only moderately famous comedian.
“In a show that goes where few, if any, shows have gone before, their skits swing from superbly graceful to absolutely bizarre.” —Orlando Sentinel

SHIRLEY GNOME: TAKING IT UP THE NOTCH
“Hilarious ... Gnome is a disarmingly likeable performer.” —Chortle (UK)
PETER N’ CHRIS’ BEST BITS Three-time Canadian Comedy Award Winners Peter n’ Chris return to bring you a night of sketch, friendship, and laughs with a collection of their very best stuff. The comic duo has been writing sketches and comedy shows for almost nine years now and after all that time have finally accumulated one show’s worth of pretty great material!

“Hugely and unendingly funny. The two comics exhibit a remarkable chemistry, an irresistible energy and bounce off each other like racquet balls.” —Edmonton Sun

Heartichoke Arts Friday, September 22 at 7:00pm
Vancouver’s very own internationally acclaimed, award-winning cabaret comedian Shirley Gnome sings explicitly honest songs about sex and human nature. A country, folk, soft-rock, and pop cabaret mashed with wickedly witty lyrics and dark social commentary—with a dollop of empowerment and a dash of sequins. The show chronicles her attempt to write songs that might make the world a better place—raunch in tact.
“A fiercely funny, but biting look at ‘the industry’ that is film ... Brayton delivers with panache and incredible timing.” —Entertainment Vancouver
