Welcome to the Neighbourhoods south of the Fraser River. This guide starts in Richmond and visits Delta, Surrey, South Surrey and Langley. It is for both locals and visitors alike and new Vancouverites just love it. How often have you heard someone say, “Oh, I drive by that neighbourhood all the time but I was there 20 years ago and nothing has changed. Well, let me tell you, things have changed all over Metro Vancouver. The neighborhoods are buzzing with activity and new developments and of course great local history. Did you know that White Rock is part of Surrey? Or that Surrey is the second biggest municipality in the Lower Mainland. Discover the new neighborhoods popping up east of White Rock starting with Morgan Creek and then Grandview Corners. So much to see! Try a visit to Langley and then carry on to Fort Langley. Even the main street of Fort Langely is seeing changes. Ever heard of Bedford Landing? It is located right in Fort Langley and is amazing. Next stop, Walnut Grove. New communities and neighbourhoods are everywhere. Visit Thunderbird Village and the other shopping malls along the way. Having been born and raised in Vancouver, I feel qualified to pass on what I remember from my youth about our great city and about the great changes we are continuing to see to this day! So get out and explore the neighborhoods south of the Fraser River. You will not be disappointed.

Commercial Centre Of Surrey

CENTRAL CITY BREWING CO.

Surrey

Whalley is a town centre of Surrey, British Columbia. It is the commercial centre of Surrey and is the most densely populated of all the town centres. It is the only town centre in Surrey to be serviced by the SkyTrain (Scott Road, Gateway, Surrey Central and King George stations) and is home to the SFU Surrey campus within the Central City Shopping Centre, the main shopping center in Whalley. As early as the 1880s, people began settling what is now present-day Whalley. In 1925, Arthur Whalley moved his family from Cloverdale to a three-acre triangle of land at the future intersection of Ferguson Road (108 Avenue), Grosvenor Road and the King George Highway. After clearing the land and spending their first winter in tents, they built a service station, which

18 included a general store, soft drink stand, and tourist cabins. The community officially adopted the name of Whalley in 1948, after the board of trade held a contest to rename what had become known as “Whalley’s Corner.”

Simon Fraser University Surrey Campus The Surrey campus appeals to students who value the benefits associated with being part of a smaller supportive learning community and an intimate and friendly campus. Professors encourage the pursuit of academic excellence through first-year cohort programs and unique programs in interactive arts and technology, computing science, entrepreneurship, management and technology, and mathematics operations research. The breadth of first-year programs offered at SFU Surrey allows students to begin most SFU degrees at the Surrey campus. In addition, SFU Surrey offers guaranteed enrollment, strong financial assistance programs, brand new state-of-the-art facilities, and a central location with outstanding access to the rest of Greater Vancouver from SkyTrain.

PROGRAMS AND FACILITIES As a result of the institution’s focus on interdisciplinary applied sciences programs, research at the campus excels in areas such as information networking and multimedia, technology-mediated learning, computer games, e-business, knowledge management, bioinformatics, intelligent systems and optimization, visualization, digital audio signal processing, computer music, physical modeling, and musical acoustics. Many new exciting areas of research in business administration, education, science, arts and social sciences, and health sciences are planned for the Surrey campus in the future. The university is also expanding its community outreach initiatives in the Fraser region, including non-credit courses, public lectures and summer camps for children. www.sfu.ca

Central City Shopping Centre The Surrey Place Mall is a wonderfully new facility housing an office tower, an SFU campus, multiple businesses, restaurants and a Brew Pub. Designed by award winning architect Bing Thom, the complex is pleasing to the eye, spacious and ultramodern. It is near Surrey Central Station of the SkyTrain system in the Whalley neighbourhood. It is the second largest mall in Surrey, smaller than Guildford Town Centre and larger than Semiahmoo Shopping Centre. Notable retailers include Best Buy, Shoppers Drug Mart, T & T Supermarket, Zellers, Future Shop, Winners and Tim Hortons. It is home to educational institutions, including a campus of Simon Fraser University (known as SFU Surrey), Stenberg College, University Career College and Westwood College. (www.centralcity.ca) Just outside of the mall you will find the bus loop. From here you can travel to all parts of Surrey and beyond. To get to Whalley and the mall, just take the King George Skytrain to Central City and you are there---what could be easier?

The 144-Suite - Surrey Civic Hotel The first world-class hotel to be built in Surrey in more than two decades, as well as a key part of City Plaza and Surrey’s evolution as an international business destination. The Autograph Collection, part of the Marriott International global portfolio, is an evolving ensemble of independent boutique hotels hand selected for bold originality, rich character and uncommon details. Launched in January of 2010, the Collection currently includes 45 properties in the United States, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and South America. Officially named ‘Civic Hotel at 3 Civic Plaza, Autograph Collection®’, the luxury hotel will boast 144 rooms, a lobby based café, fine dining, fitness and pool facilities, a large convention space, and catering services. With Autograph Collection, the Civic Hotel will offer the Marriott Rewards guest loyalty program, where guests can earn points at more than 3,200 hotels in 68 countries. Combined with its premium residences and professional offices, 3 Civic Plaza will be the largest private project to give form to the emerging Surrey City Centre. The hotel will add significantly to the Mayor’s vision of a sophisticated social hub and will provide much-needed business and social functionality. Speeding back and forth from Vancouver International Airport in just an hour, 3 Civic Plaza’s neighbouring SkyTrain station will lead international guests to the Civic Hotel’s check-in desk. From here, separate elevators provide access to lavish suites and meeting spaces. www.3civicplaza.ca

21

Hosting up to 5,000 people for activities and events ranging from farmers’ markets to live concerts, City Plaza is at the top of a broad pedestrian corridor and university district that extends from the new KPU campus at 3 Civic Plaza southwards to SFU Surrey and Central City Shopping Centre. Home to 3 Civic Plaza, KPU, City Hall and City Centre Library, the Plaza is the focal point of Surrey City Centre – a vibrant public square alive with visitors, residents, students, government and business people, with immediate transit access and pedestrian walkways connecting the community at large.

Surrey

With 50% of population growth anticipated in Surrey over the next 30 years, there is an immediate plan to build a Light Rail Transit (LRT) network comprised of three lines: City Centre to Guildford, City Centre to Newton and City Centre to Langley, respectively. And where all three lines converge, you’ll find 3 Civic Plaza.

What was to become the Fleetwood district was a heavily wooded area around the junction of Yale Road (Fraser Highway) and Pike Road (160th Street). Yale Road was opened in 1875 as a through route from Yale in the upper valley to New Westminster. Most early settlers preferred the lowlands of the Serpentine or Nicomekl rivers as the land was fertile and easy to clear. The uplands on the other hand were heavily timbered and difficult to clear. Only a few hardy settlers took up the challenge of settling in the Fleetwood area. This was the preferred area for loggers. In 1907 James and Edith Francis homesteaded on land in the vicinity of Yale Road and Pike Road. (Francis Road is 159th Street). RIGHT:

Cloverdale, a historical gem in Surrey, has a rich heritage. The name Cloverdale was first inspired by William Shannon, one of the first settlers to the region. Named for the charming abundance of clover that blanketed the area, Mr. Shannon decided to register the name “Clover Valley” in Victoria so postal facilities could be made available for the area. In 1945 Jack Shannon and Clarke Greenaway established the first rodeo in Cloverdale. Their message: “The West Goes Wilder.” Thus started a tradition that is still celebrated today. Crescent Beach was largely built along the beach berm spreading out from Beecher Street. Crescent Beach was primarily a summer resort. In the 1920’s people could access Crescent via the Great Northern Railway. The sun, sand and swimming lessons provided by the Swimming Association drew many summer visitors. Blackie’s spit is seen in the background below. The summer resident influx never failed despite local economic conditions. 1929 in particular saw a number of improvements. Captain Cates remodelled the Hotel and gave it an improved appearance and functionality. www.crescentbeach.bc.ca

CRESCENT BEACH

37

Named After The Curve In The Bay

South Surrey

Early on the area was named Blackie’s Spit after Walter Blackie. The ladies of the community could not see this vulgar name on a railway station. It reminded them of the cuspidors commonly in use in those days. It is said that an eminent politician coming in by sea remarked that the spit looked like a crescent and so the name stuck. 1912 was considered the boom year for Crescent Beach. This was due to local construction and promotion of the resort by the Crescent Beach Development Company. In addition to a boat house and twelve homes, the Crescent Hotel, and a pier were constructed. The Crescent Beach Hotel and its associated wharf, was the center for summer activities in Crescent Beach. It was located on the present site of Beecher Place, the current public washrooms, police office, and meeting hall at the foot of Beecher Street. The Crescent Station in 1909 was a simple shelter. However, with the development of the beach community it warranted a full station. Children, their mothers or their chaperons would arrive at Crescent Station and walk to Camp Alexandra. Even the Crescent Beach Hotel was closed every winter, with 1919-20 being the first winter it was kept open. However, a large enough permanent population existed to warrant the opening of a school in 1912. (All Photos:

South Surrey Semiahmoo Secondary School is known for its music program, with a forte in jazz. Almost all of Semi’s instrumental music ensembles are full courses in the school timetable. The Grade 11 and 12 jazz bands and soloists travel to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival annually. Another jazz festival that Semiahmoo attends is the Envision Jazz Festival in Surrey, B.C. Also notable is Semi’s recent success at MusicFest Canada 2008 in Ottawa. Three of Semi’s Jazz Band 12 members were included as part of the Canada-wide Yamaha Allstar Jazz Band. Semiahmoo ensembles have won several awards at MusicFest Canada in addition to numerous individual scholarships given out to students who demonstrate musical excellence. Semiahmoo is very proud of their celebrated band directors. The Semiahmoo music program’s rise to fame was created by David Proznick (retired in 2003). In 2003, Proznick won the Keith Mann Outstanding Band Director Award. This honor is a memorial plaque given to one director annually in all of Canada. It was started in 2002 by MusicFest Canada in honorarium of Keith Mann, a director who died in 2001. Dave Fullerton (retired in 2012), also won the Outstanding Band Director Award in 2011 for his involvement in MusicFest making Semiahmoo the only school in all of Canada to have two of their band directors win this prestigious honor. The department is currently headed by Dagan Lowe, a 1997 graduate of the school, with aid from Kevin Lee and Greg Farrugia (Teacher of IB Music).

BOOKS

* BIOGRAPHY

The Life & Times of the Legendary

Mr. D

by Christopher Best

This sixth and final book on Arthur Delamont and his Vancouver Boys’ Band is also the first in a series on the History of the Youth Band Movement in Canada. The movement started here in Kitsilano in 1933 when the boy’s won the juvenile band championship of the world at the Chicago World’s Fair. All Vancouver became juvenile band crazy and bands sprouted up everywhere. Everyone wanted their sons/ daughters to play in a band. Arthur started no less than seven himself in and around Vancouver. As he began taking trips with his band to the Old Country (England), in 1934, the boys travelled by train across Canada stopping and playing along the way. Soon the places they visited all wanted youth bands of their own spurred on by the fine playing of his boys and their gentlemanly manner. Arthur’s boys went on to have bands of their own and teach in the schools. It wasn’t until the early 1960s that band became accredited in the public schools in B.C. due to the fine example and hard work of many dedicated music educators. Jump ahead to 2014. Ministers and trustees are cutting the arts programs like never before. Band in the school curriculum is threatened, branded as a frill and easy pickings for ill-informed public officials who know nothing of the efforts it took to establish band in the curriculum in the first place. This book (and subsequent books), set the record straight. They tell the story of how band got into the public school system. The next book in the series is titled: Greater Vancouver School Band Programs from the 1930s to the Present. It records/documents the fine band programs that have and still exist in the public schools today. These books will preserve forever the band legacy of not only Vancouver but eventually of Canada.

68 White Rock Gallery is nestled just uphill from the famous White Rock Pier. Celebrating its 25th year, the gallery has earned its place as a respected member of the Canadian art community. Strong basics are at the root of it: outstanding original art, beautifully displayed in a warm inviting atmosphere. Housed in a former bank building which retains its high ceilings and large front windows, the space has been intriguingly renovated into a combined open plan and alcoves that catch the eye and heart at every step. The wall arrangements are in continual flux with a tasteful and energizing blending of the traditional and contemporary work that the gallery represents. Visitors speak of an experience that is intimate yet carries hints of grandeur without ostentatiousness. About twice a year, the gallery takes the art to the next level with a formal exhibition. These are grand events, prepared many months in advance and drawing art lovers from far and wide. Fitting handin-glove with the art side of the gallery is its custom framing, where the magic lies in narrowing otherwise overwhelming options into a framing decision that beautifully complements but never overpowers the art. www.whiterockgallery.com

Earl Marriott Secondary School Earl Marriott was well known for its musicals thanks to Lorna Graham the band director in the sixties and Rick Harmon the drama teacher. They put one on every year, for 10 years, before Rodger Owens arrived in 1994. Rodger decided to alternate. One year they produced a big Broadway musical complete with orchestra and the next year they went on an amazing band trip to some exotic place. The first trip under Mr. Owen’s was to the Banff Festival. Next, they were the first local school band I believe to go to Costa Rica. Then it was Cuba. Then back to Costa Rica. And then back to Cuba (they liked the sunshine). By then they thought maybe sthey hould be going to Europe. So their next big trip was to the Czech Republic. It was the longest trip they have made to date. They performed in Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, Venice, Florence and finally Rome. It was only 15 days but they all had a great time. Another trip was to Spain which was really different. They went to Cordoba and worked their way down to Malaga, the capital of Andalucia on the Costa del Sol. Two years ago they went to Southern England and France. From London they travelled west to Portsmouth and Bath and then back to London. They took the Chunnel across to the continent and visited Vimy Ridge before going to Paris. Last year (2015) they went to Hawaii for a festival. They performed on the deck of the USS Missouri, the battleship while in Hawaii. It was amazing! The kids get to learn the history of each place as well as have the performing experience. They always play a lot of school concerts. Teachers came up and said, “We have never had an orchestra play at our school before.” Their kids were thrilled and asked our kids for their autographs. It was a great experience for everyone! “By Jove What A Band” General Gordon Elementary School is located on Bayswater Street two blocks north of Broadway. It was here in the little yellow school house on the school grounds that the world famous Vancouver Kitsilano Boys Band was founded in 1928 by Arthur W. Delamont. Band rehearsals soon moved into the school basement when the band got bigger and continued there through fifty years of unparalleld success until the band folded in 1974. Arthur Delamont, who founded the Vancouver Kitsilano Boys Band in 1928, was a pioneer in the field of music education of our youth. He was the first to travel extensively with youth bands and to show that youths between the ages of 11 and 19 could be developed into a first class musical organization. He did this by taking first place in virtually every festival he entered, starting with the Victoria Provincial Championship in 1931. He went on to win the National Junior Band Championship title in Toronto that same year. Then in 1933, the Worlds Junior Band Championship title in Chicago. His wins were not marginal wins but without hesitation as one adjudicator remarked in Chicago. By Jove what a band’ and “there was little doubt that they totally outclassed their nearest competition,” were other adjudicators remarks. In 1934, he began taking his band to England, where he took first place in the West of England music festival and again in 1936 at the Crystal Palace where his boys beat out 35 adult bands to take the coveted Cassells Challenge Shield (continued on page 158).

80 (continued from page 155) youth bands but they had not expected Arthur to do it all single handedly. Yet, by the mid 40s, he had started no less than six school bands, from which he selected the best for his Kitsilano Band, they were the West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Grandview, Point Grey Junior High School and the General Gordon school bands. As more and more bands began to spring up in the school system, he eventually relinquished control of all but his Kitsilano Boys Band. Over the course of fifty years his band won 200 championships, made 14 European tours and attended 5 world fairs. The tours lasted from 2 to 5 months and three concerts a day were normal routine. While most bands would travel and perform only a handful of concerts on tour, his boys were hired out to perform engagements like professionals at seaside resorts through-out Britain, often booked well in advance for their next tour. His success story is filled with humor, excitement, tragedy and love. In 1914 he was a member of the Territorial Staff Band of the Salvation Army, on board the Empress of Ireland, which sank in the St. Lawrence, with a loss of over 1000. In 1939 he was in England with his boys when war was declared and had to sneak out under the cover of searchlights and balloons, zigzagging home down the coast of Africa and across the Atlantic, trying to avoid German U-boats. His legacy is the thousands of boys who passed through his organization and the lessons they learned. Often their sons went on to play with him as well. And over the years they became the who’s who of the Canadian music establishment where his boys filled the first chairs in symphony orchestras. www.warfleetpress.wordpress.com BELOW: c1933 The band at the Chicago Worlds’ Fair

84 THE MAKERS ROOM It starts with just a spark of imagination... Thoughts form, discussions follow. Sketches are made, supplies gathered, and something is carefully crafted and ultimately created. This gives us tremendous satisfaction; to have transformed an idea into something marvelous - even unpredictable - but always something we’re proud of. We work alongside others to find inspiration, share our knowledge and resources, collaborate, socialize, to show off, and learn from each other. We are Makers. You’re invited to join us at The Makers Room: 20569 Fraser Highway, Langley, BC. We have a beautiful studio with lots of natural light and a list of talented staff. We offer art lessons for all ages, artist socials, art night for adults, open studio (families are encouraged to drop in and create something together), weekend workshops, preschool art & crafts - and so much more! We also carry several hats vintage 1950s as well as other new and designer clothing and accessories.

100 Pat Barker was born in our Nation’s Capital, and graduated with a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art. She started making documentary films for broadcast television, and didn’t take up painting seriously until she became a firefighter in 1998. Now retired, she opened The Pencil Studio in April 2013. “I explore the world around me in photographs,” says Pat, “often using them for inspiration for my work. I was always more comfortable with a camera in my hands, but that all changed when I was commissioned to film an artist’s retreat in Oman, in the Middle East. There were artists from all over the world, but it was a Dutch Artist named Vera Mauro – there was something about the physicality of her work that I connected with, and the rest is history.” While Pat’s medium of choice has been the pencil, she has been combining acrylic with shards of broken glass and mirror on canvas. Besides her own work in the studio, Pat also represents local Fort Langley Ceramicist Elaine Brewer White, Cold Wax Artist Kathleen Menges, Wood Artists Don Irvine, and Jay Mapson. Unique to the studio are ‘graphite objects’ by Agelio Batle, as well miniaturist Dalton Ghetti. Susan Galick is a Canadian artist who has embraced art and creativity since childhood. Her works are influenced by her passion of the outdoors and her wonderful memories of living and

traveling around beautiful British Columbia: Quesnel Lake in the Cariboo region, fishing the salt chuck with her father, touring the Gulf islands with her parents, living in White Rock, Gavin Lake, Likely, Sooke, and historic Fort Langley. Susan is a member of the Fort Langley Artist Group and has studied both painting and portraiture with established artists such as Mike Svob, Carol Marine, Carmel Clare, Perry Haddock, Robert Barrett, Murray Phillips, and Gaye Adams. She is also an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Opening her own studio/gallery in the Flatiron Building of Bedford

102 Elaine Brewer-White is an artist living in Fort Langley B.C. She has been working as a figurative clay sculptor for over 30 years, and her work can be found in private and corporate collections worldwide. Currently Elaine specializes in 3/D portrait sculpture - artworks that celebrate individuals, families, and animal companions. She has sculpted husbands on motorcycles and grandpas in wet suits, great Danes on loveseats and over-sized cats waiting to pounce. She has created David Suzuki as a garden gnome, and Pierre Trudeau in thoughtful repose. Leonard Cohen considering the ‘birds on a wire’, and Karen Kane at rest after a dance. Elaine sees her work as visual story-telling. She seeks to reveal the humanity, passion and wonder in each of her subjects. Her studio is behind her house. You will know her studio by the strangely wonderful garden gate covered with bright metal flowers and vines, and next to that her veggie garden where old sewing machines and Barbie’s are repurposed into garden décor. Elaine welcomes any studio visits by appointment.

Fort Langley

Imagine the West Coast before the cities of Vancouver and Victoria were built. In the 1830’s, the Fraser River was the highway and Fort Langley, a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post, was the only European settlement for miles. Today you can walk in the footsteps of British Columbia’s early adventurers and explore the actual site where British Columbia became a colony. Try on period clothing, enjoy interactive exhibits, talk with knowledgeable costumed interpreters. We are open 7

Fort Langley is the exact location where, a century and a half ago, a huge fur trade organization called the Hudson’s Bay Company established a small post to trade with the First Nations of the West Coast. The enterprise grew, evolved, and influenced history, leading to the creation of the colony of British Columbia. Furs were shipped to Europe via Cape Horn, produce was traded to the Russians in Alaska, local cranberries found their way to California, and Fraser River salmon was enjoyed as far away as Hawaii! In 1858, rumours of gold on the Fraser River caused a massive influx of

105

Americans to the area. Fearing annexation by the United States, British Columbia was proclaimed a Crown Colony on this site by James Douglas on November 19, 1858. The Hudson’s Bay Company established the original Fort Langley in 1827. It served as part of a network of fur trade forts operating in the New Caledonia and Columbia Districts (now British Columbia and northern Washington). The fort maintained a good and peaceful trade in furs, salmon, and even cranberries with the local native inhabitants. Because of its strategic position on the Fraser River the post developed into a regional depot and forwarding centre. Photos:www.pc.qc.ca/fortlangley
