Welcome to the Neighbourhoods of Vancouver. This book is meant to inform our readers about the amazing happenings going on throughout the neighbourhoods of east Vancouver. It is for both locals and visitors alike and should prove useful to new Vancouverites as well. East Vancouver is larger than most realize. Its official boundaries are from Boundary Road in the east to Ontario Street in the west and from Marine Drive in the south to Hastings Street in the north. There are several skytrain stations on the eastside, Joyce-Collingwood, Rupert Street, Renfrew Street, Commercial Drive and Main Street. There are several new community centres located on the eastside, Creekside, Mt. Pleasant, Hillcrest, Trout Lake, Kensington, Killarney, Champlain Heights and Sunset. I was born and raised on the eastside of Vancouver. I remember when there were no housing developments on the Fraser River, just bush and fishing! Why, there was no Oakridge in those days, just more bush where we kids built our forts and rode our bikes along the dirt paths. A lot has changed and is still changing throughout east Vancouver. This guide is meant for the locals to take with them and to visit a different neighborhood on Vancouver’s eastside each week end weekend throughout the year. But if you are a tourist, we are sure you will enjoy it too! So get out and explore your neighbourhoods. Christopher Best

PUNJABI MARKET

Little India Meets Bollywood

Between 48th and 51st Avenue on Main Street, highlighted with special street signs, you will find the Punjabi Market. This neighbourhood is home to Vancouvers’ East Indian community. The market has the highest concentration of jewelers in Canada and the prices are always open for bargaining. People from India are said to have a sweet tooth and an amazing collection of sweets are available to satisfy every taste at the Punjabi Market. Kulfi is a widely acceptable dessert, a sort of Indian representation of ice cream. Rasgullas are another popular type of dessert; sweet little balls of rose-flavored cream cheese. Most of the Kabobs, which we relish these days, originated in the northern part of India. They are believed to have been brought into India through a Persian connection. Besides foods, the market is home to a collection of designer wear shops selling beautiful cloths and fabrics, sarees and other items. Photo: Ross Street Sikh Temple on Marine Drive

4 ~ Original Tandoori Kitchen India marriages are considered incomplete without antique Indian jewelry and India Gold Jewelry for the bride. With approximately 10 million weddings a year taking place in India, wedding related physical gold investing is big business! Jewelry retailers and gold dealers both agree, Gold in India and Antique Indian Jewelry is glittering again! The Indus Valley civilization is one of the oldest in the world, going back to ancient India, at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C: their merger with the earlier inhabitants created the classical India culture. Antique Indian Jewelry and gemstones are not only in the blood of India; they are its very soul. In India astrology gemstones are “prescribed” to ward off planetary afflictions in a birth chart. Gemstone jewelry, in India culture is chosen to match the quality of the person. Pink gemstones, for example, will boost the wearer’s luck and prosperity. This list of pink gemstones include the rare Argyle Pink Diamonds of Australia!

At the Original Tandoori Kitchen restaurant we have selected dishes that are most sumptuous as they were inspired by Great Indian Emperors. Special emphasis on Tandoori Cooking reflects Chef Sharanjit ‘s vision of bringing Tandoori Cuisine to higher levels of popularity in the Great Pacific North West. Popular accompaniments are our special stuffed naan breads which are baked vertically in the Tandoori oven. At the Original Tandoori Kitchen restaurant you will spice up your lives with our authentic Indian Food, cooked with nothing but the best ingredients and spices. Signature dishes are first marinated in an exotic blend of spices, as inspired by chefs of bygone eras, before they are barbecued on skewers in the tall high-heat (320c / 600f) tandoor oven over charcoal. A quick stove-top finish follows. This mode of cooking ensures the succulence of the ingredients.

There are a number of Indian restaurants, sweet shops, and grocers representing cuisine from varying parts of the subcontinent; as well as other businesses that cater to an IndoCanadian community and tourists alike. PUNJABI MARKET ~ 13 Indian Gold Jewellery Gold is known to be nearest to the heart of every women; the glitter of gold makes women happy more than anything else. Women all over the world love to wear gold jewellery; it is the prized possession that she keeps with utmost care. India in the past was often referred to as the jewel of the east. If we take a walk down the country’s historic past, we will find that Indian jewelry is very much a part of its unique history and dates back to ancient times when elegant and intricate Indian gold jewelry was designed and crafted for its pantheon of gods. India was often known to be the land of gold, jewels and pearls in the past. Among the gold jewellery items, Indian jewellery is the most famous and highly rated. The Indian tradition and culture mixes very well with golden jewelry and replicates its past heritage. When the British ruled India the East India Company used to trade for Indian gold, silver, diamond and other gems and pearls of which India was famous. The famous Kohinoor Diamond which used to be on the minars of Taj Mahal was taken away by the British during its rule in India.

14 ~ Vaisakhi

Vaisakhi Vancouverites have two Vaisakhi Parades to choose from: the Vancouver Vaisakhi Parade happening on April 13, 2013, which attracts about 50,000 spectators, and the annual Surrey Vaisakhi Parade and Celebration on April 20, 2013, which attracts 80,000 - 200,000, making it one of the largest Vaisakhi parades outside India. The parade starts at 11am at the Ross Street Temple (8000 Ross St at 64th), moves south on Ross Street to SE Marine Drive, then west to Main Street, north to 49th Avenue, east to Fraser Street, south to 57th Avenue, east to Ross Street and then returns to the Temple. (see about.com, Vancouver events for more info) The nagar kirtan truly is a community event. The generousity of the community can be seen with people giving free food along the streets, sharing, helping each other, singing and walking in the parade. Families get together wearing traditional clothes from far and wide. Businesses and other community organizations are commonly seen sharing and giving at their booths or on floats. The sikh community is proud of their accomplishments in Canada and the nagar kirtan is a day of sharing and giving. Children are taught their culture and pride instilled in them.

18 ~ Sunset Community Centre

Sunset Community Centre In 1945, the people of Sunset had a vision to build a new community centre. They started by forming a Community Association with the task of creating a new recreation facility in South Vancouver. How could the association raise another $100,000.00 when it took two years to raise $25,000.00? The community needed to do something big. Stan Thomas, President of the Sunset Association in 1947, was sent to Hollywood California to convince Bing Crosby to stage his radio show in Vancouver as a benefit for the construction of Sunset Community Centre. Bing Crosby was the most famous celebrity of his time selling #1 records, starring in popular Hollywood movies and he had the most listened to radio program in North America. Imagine Stan Thomas stepping into his car one rainy October morning to ask this international superstar to come to Vancouver for a benefit fundraiser. What do you think Bing’s response was? Yes! On September 21, 1948 the Bing Crosby Radio Show came to Vancouver and over $26,000.00 was raised in one performance. Following the program, the City of Vancouver contributed the remaining amount and Sunset Community Centre was built. The people of Sunset are a people with a vision. They take risks and they acheive their goals. Today, Sunset Community Centre is over 50 years old and and has just been replaced in 2007, with a new structure 2 blocks east on the Park Board’s Nursery lands along Main Street between 51st and 53rd Avenues. www.mysunset.net

Real Canadian Superstore is a chain of hypermarkets owned by

Canadian food retailing giant Loblaw Companies. Its name is often shortened to RCSS or Superstore. Originating in Western Canada in the early 1990s, the banner expanded into Ontario in the early 2000s as Loblaw attempted to fend off competition from department stores including U.S.-based Wal-Mart. The stores carry a variety of goods (like Fred Meyer or Wal-Mart Supercentres,) but the vast majority of space is devoted to groceries and about a third of each store is set aside for electronics, housewares, and clothing. Items in the latter two categories are mainly from Loblaw’s private labels, (President’s Choice, Life at Home, or Joe Fresh.) As with many Loblaw stores, they offer corporate-branded services such as PhotoLab photo finishing and DrugStore pharmacies. Loblaws is working to cut costs and compete effectively with this multi-format store. Each store has a similar layout, useful for both cost efficiency and shopper ease. Also, in an effort to cater to individual customer segments, Superstore buys specific products for different regions. Superstore locations now top 210,000 square feet. Drop by and see our newly renovated store on Marine Drive, between Main Street and Fraser Street.

Sandwiches are made right before your eyes and are served on Italian, Wheat and a variety of seasoned breads, baked daily in each restaurant.

SOUTH HILL

A South Hill Delight Fraser Village is one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods. It is located between 39th Avenue and 51st Avenue on Fraser Street. In the 1950s, fifteen cent stores and ice cream parlours could be found around 45th Avenue. Now adays they have given way to a more eclectic mixture of Asian and East Indian restaurants, boutiques and yuppie coffee houses. You use to be able to drive the Fraser slope, across Marine Drive and over two bridges that would take you onto the farmlands of Richmond. That was before 1959 when the Deas Tunnel was built!

Dairy Queen For more than 70 years, the DQ® system’s recipe for success has been simple. It’s been a combination of hardworking people who own and operate restaurants, and great-tasting food and tempting treats served in our establishments. Our phenomenal story began with the 10-cent sale of a then unnamed product on August 4, 1938, in Kankakee, Illinois. A father and son partnership in Green River, Illinois, had been experimenting with a soft frozen dairy product for some time. They contacted Sherb Noble, a good friend and customer, who agreed to run the “all you can eat” trial sale at his walk-in ice cream store. Within two hours, he dished out more than 1,600 servings of the new dessert.

The family run, Dockers Family Restaurant located on the corner of 45th and Fraser in Vancouver has become a destination spot for many. The sub sandwiches have remained the same for over 20 years, prepared fresh on the grill using top quality meats. The Super, Special, Greek, and Steak & Pepperoni subs remain popular favourites. 30 ~ South Hill Memorial Park The bridges were removed shortly after the opening of the tunnel and Fraser Street now comes to a halt a couple of blocks past Marine Drive. So much for progress! The newly constructed Mason Block at 46th Avenue is a sign of good things to come for the merchants and home owners of Fraser Village. More construction is on the way with condos being built above new retail businesses. A nice neighborhood with lots of parks. This is a great neighborhood to shop for fruit and vegetables in the Indian and Chinese markets. The prices are great! The past lives on in the memories of us older Vancouverites. Remember these neighborhood favorites: Fyfe Drugs (corner 45th Ave.), 15 Cent Store ( just north of 45th on the westside), Honest Nats Department Store (48th & Fraser), Cornets Meats (it is now a flower shop between 45th and 46th on the westside), Glendale Bakery (next to Cornets Meats on northside). Breka

What started as a dream has become a reality for Devere and Natalie Stine. They had always dreamed of owning their own coffee shop. Having once lived in the Fraserview area, they were familiar with the shops in the neighborhood and the long German tradition still being carried on by the previous owner Hans Buchholtz and his Fraser Bakery & Konditorrei. A long time tradition in the village, when they heard that Hans was interested in selling, things were set in motion and before long they found themselves the proud owners of a traditional bakery that needed lots of upgrading. With the help of family and friends they set about to transform the old bakery into a new coffee shop/bakery concept. Several years later they are still going strong and have just opened a second location DOWNTOWN on Bute, just south of Robson where the old Bread Garden used to be. Both locations are open 24/7! We wish their DOWNTOWN bakery & cafe nothing but success!

Fraser Street at 49th The new hub of the southside, Fraser Street at 49th Avenue, is also known as South Hill. A new downtown is emerging in this part of the city. At 10 o’clock at night you can sit and watch the people go by from either Starbucks or Breka. People coming and going, getting on and off the buses. It is like being on Davie Street or in Yaletown. The coffee shops often have a line up at 10 o,clock at night. There is no Canada Line or Skytrain, just criss-crossing buses. There is more hustle and bustle on this corner at all hours than in many other parts of the city. The uniqueness of the markets on Fraser Street is quite apparent. There are several East Indian grocers plying their trade as well as a couple of Chinese grocers. One offers delicacies such as roast duck in an almost chinese fast food outlet style, similar to food courts in the malls.

MOUNTAIN VIEW ~ 49 Frocks Catherine Staveley and Deb Viccars have heard and said this again and again, but after having been bridesmaids countless times and brides themselves, they both realized that this was much easier said than done. In search of fresh, modern silhouettes in inspired fabrics and colours, Cat and Deb traveled from coast to coast for the newest up and coming designers. After finding the perfect dresses for Catherine’s wedding in 2005, Cat and Deb decided to bring these stylish selections to all Canadian brides and bridesmaids and with that, the idea for Frocks was born. Now, five years later, Frocks is please to have a new addition to our team - Sora Hong is the new owner of the Frocks Calgary location.

50 ~ Mountain View Cemetery Modern research suggests that cannabis is a valuable aid in the treatment of a wide range of clinical applications. These include pain relief -- particularly of neuropathic pain (pain from nerve damage) -- nausea, spasticity, glaucoma, and movement disorders. Marijuana is also a powerful appetite stimulant, specifically for patients suffering from HIV, the AIDS wasting syndrome, or dementia. Emerging research suggests that marijuana’s medicinal properties may protect the body against some types of malignant tumors and are neuroprotective. “The evidence is overwhelming that marijuana can relieve certain types of pain, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms caused by such illnesses as multiple sclerosis, cancer and AIDS -- or by the harsh drugs sometimes used to treat them. And it can do so with remarkable safety. Indeed, marijuana is less toxic than many of the drugs that physicians prescribe every day.”-Joycelyn Elders, MD, former US Surgeon General, Mar. 26, 2004.

MOUNTAIN VIEW ~ 51

Mountain View Cemetery When Mountain View Cemetery opened in 1887, it supplanted burial grounds in what was designated Stanley Park that same year as the city’s cemetery. The original parcel of land is now known as the “Old Cemetery” is bounded by Fraser Street on the east, 37th Avenue on the south, 33rd on the north, and a row of tall trees on the west. Land on the north of this was purchased in 1901 for an expansion from the Horne family, which became the “Horne I Addition.” The Jones farm on the south was added in 1910 as the Jones I and Jones II Additions, and in 1922, the Horne II was acquired on the west. The “1919 Addition” is a tract bounded by 41st and 43rd Avenues, and contains many victims of the Spanish flu pandemic that took many hundreds of lives of local residents. The final addition is the Abray Park Addition on the western side, acquired in 1941 and named after a squatter who previously lived on the land and tended an orchard and grazed cattle there. Burial sites historically were often grouped together along the lines of religion (e.g., Jewish), nationality (e.g., Chinese and Japanese), or organizational affiliation (e.g., Freemasons and Oddfellows). Other groupings are pauper grave sites and war veterans. The cemetery also has Canadian military graves. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintains the graves of 578 Commonwealth service personnel - 319 from World War I and 259 from World War II. The war graves of the former war are in a special Soldiers’ Plot, while those of the latter are either concentrated in a Veterans’ Plot or scattered within the cemetery. Most of the airmen died serving at the Royal Canadian Air Force base at Sea Island, and many sailors were from the H.M.C.S. Discovery naval station of the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve. The cemetery contains the remains of many notable occupants: Harry Churchill Beet, Henry O. Bell-Irving, Edward Evans Blackmore, Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred Carey, William Carey Ditmars, Charles Edgar Edgett, Joe Fortes, a.k.a., “Old Black Joe,” Samuel Greer, Eric Hamber, Laurence William Herchmar.

58 ~ Ba Le Deli & Bakery Sal y Limon – we know you’re going to ask so here’s the skinny – is pronounced like “Sal E Leemon” and it means salt and lime (of course it does!). This vibrant Mexican restaurant is the brainchild of two couples – Carolina and Sebastien, Adriana and Pepe – who want to share their passion for authentic Mexican cuisine. Every restaurant has walls. And walls need pictures. The restaurant really came together for the partners when they blended casual dining with the concept of an art gallery. Throughout the year, the walls of Sal y Limon restaurant will showcase the works of Mexican artists. WHAT WE OFFER Sal y Limon is a gathering place for sharing food and ideas in an organic way that is significant. Yes, it’s casual dining but we feel the experience should be fun and inspiring. You will find Sal y Limon, a Mexican restaurant in the heart of the Mount Pleasant community, at 701 Kingsway. This kids friendly restaurant is ideal for a vibrant community of families, young professionals, artists and writers. The corner of Kingsway and Fraser Street has alot to offer. Besides those mentioned Empress Bakery is located on Kingsway.

Ba Le Deli & Bakery Located on Kingsway & Fraser in Vancouver, Ba Le is a little Vietnamese deli and bakery, specializing in banh mi. They also sell other Vietnamese items as well, such as rice dishes, noodle plates and desserts. However, most customers come for the cheap subs! Ba Le’s not the type of sub shop to dine-in as it’s a small space, so order you sandwiches to-go. There are a few varieties to choose from such as grilled pork, grilled beef, chicken and Vietnamese ham. On this visit, we ordered a total of four banh mi sandwiches and a pudding for dessert: Two Cold Cut banh mi subs ($3 each), two Special banh mi subs ($3.25 each), and a Tapioca Cup. www.eatinginvancouver.ca

60 ~ BKH Jerky For over 25 years B.K.H. Jerky has been serving the Lower Mainland. William Lim the founder of this amazing jerky in Canada, discovered how to make beef and pork jerky in Singapore. Hence ’Singapore Style’ From the original Bee Kim Heng, Master Teo Ah Tian, which he himself has over 40 years of jerky perfection. A family owned business, which only uses the finest cuts of Canadian grown beef and pork products. Features a sweet and moist savoury flavour or if you like a little kick in your mouth try it spicy! Now we would like for you to experience the unique taste of our beef and pork jerky. What BKH Jerky makes is a Singapore style beef and pork jerky that is sweet, juicy, and moist not dry, chewy, salty, or leathery like the other stuff that is out there. We make it fresh every day at our store in Vancouver. We do not add MSG, it is wheat free and gluten free, for the health conscious people out there. As you may have noticed, it is tenderer, it is sweeter, and if you look closely, the meat is sliced not ground. We use the best cuts of meat, the top round of beef and the pork cutlet. Also the smokiness and glaze comes from our last process which is that we barbecue it on a grill.

THE TRIANGLE

Where 15th Avenue Meets Kingsway & Fraser The Triangle is a unique neighbourhood in Vancouver. It is only about a block and a half long on East 15th Avenue. It only has stores on one side of the street. The other side of the street is a park in the shape of a triangle which runs along Kingsway Street. At one end it stops at Fraser Street. At the other end it stops at Kingsway. It has recently undergone an influx of new businesses which has livened up the area considerably. The biggest new establishment is Matchstick Coffee Roasters. Each time I have been by, it has had a good size clientele. Another interesting new store is The Gluten Free Epicurean. Others include Collage, Collage, Heart Breaker Salon, spool of thread and Precious & Few. A few old favorites are Clayzone Ceramics, The Lion’s Den and The ArtWay Art Studios.

Watch for new events and workshops. Check out our schedule and classes: www.clayzoneceramics.blogspot.ca/ The ArtWay is a learning center that offers classes and workshops for adults, youth and children. Our goal is student centered learning, we teach you the basics and then you guide us. We will teach you what you want to learn, follow the path you choose to creating your own masterpieces. The ArtWay was founded, January 2010, by prominent local artist Denna Erickson. For many years Denna has wanted to provide the community with a center that teaches art as a journey, as a process rather than as an end result. Denna teaches students how to tap into their creative side, how to put onto paper the beauty that they see around them. The ArtWay is the result of a dream – a learning center for people of all ages and ability levels. We are a business that offers classes for children youth and adults. Our aim is to enable people to explore their creative side through expression in various mediums. We believe that the making or art and expression of creativity are guided processes in which the student plays a very major role.

66 ~ Killarney Community Centre

Killarney Community Centre The staff and volunteers of Killarney Community Centre are dedicated to offering quality leisure services to the community at large. We understand the cultural diversity of the community and work to bridge the gaps that exist between different people, by bringing them together in recreational activities. Inclusiveness and access for all are important aspects of our service delivery. Killarney Community Centre proper, swimming pool and ice rink were officially opened on September 14, 1963 by the Vancouver Park Board and the Killarney Community Centre Society. The Community Centre proper received a complete refurbishment during 1998-1999. This redevelopment allowed the centre to tre to expand its service delivery to a growing community by adding more lounge space, 2 new childcare facilities, and a fitness centre. In February of 2006, the new Killarney Leisure Pool opened. The pool is an $11 million destination leisure aquatic facility, serving all Vancouver residents with public swim hours offered throughout most of the day. This beach-style entry, funfilled complex with magnificent views of the North Shore mountains, has ozone treated water, a giant water slide, delightful spray and play features for all ages including a “lazy river, a 25 metre lap pool, 15 metre warm lap pool, whirlpool, steamroom and is wheelchair accessible.

KILLARNEY CENTRE

A Nice Little Shopping Mall Killarney Centre is located on 49th Avenue at Elliot Street just east of Victoria Drive. This shopping area is home to the Killarney Market, a neighbourhood grocery store like you use to find all over Vancouver. You can get almost anything at the market! There is also a real estate company, Sutton Killarney Realty, and an insurance company. There is a resident veterinarian, a Starbucks of course, an optometrist, a bakery, a restaurant and a few specialty stores. There is even a music store that offers lessons the old fashion way. You drop by for a lesson and they supply the music teacher on the instrument of your choice. This centre has everything and it is centrally located on the east side. Across the street is a very fine seniors home, relatively new with room for about 100.

70 ~ Wally’s Burgers For 46 years Wally’s Burgers on Kingsway was a Vancouver landmark. A local hang out where hotrodders met to show off their cars and gather with friends to chow down on burgers covered in the famous Wally’s sauce, fries, rings and super delicious milkshakes all made according to the exacting standards of the founder Wally Stritzel. The Kingsway location was closed in 2008 and re-opened in 2010 at 49th and Elliot in the Killarney Center, at Cates Park (2009) in North Vancouver (May to September) and at River Market (2012) at the New Westminster Quay. Today, everything is cooked to order. Using only fresh local ingredients in the preparation of our burgers we strive to deliver the same delicious burgers Wally’s has served for over 50-years. Unheard of today, we have a local butcher who prepares our patties along with a local baker who bakes our buns fresh every day. We are proud to be an independent family owned and operated burger house and we hope you and your family will enjoy our food each and every visit.

KILLARNEY MARKET ~ 71 Expert Hearing Solutions Hearing is precious, yet most of us take our hearing for granted. Did you know our hearing organ (the cochlea) is the first organ in the fetus to develop and is in its adult configuration by 20 weeks gestation? The majority of people think hearing loss is for old people, when in fact 65 per cent of the population who experience hearing loss are under 65 years of age. We live in a noisy world and noise has become the biggest contributor to hearing loss. Once the delicate little hair cells in the cochlea become damaged, it cannot be reversed. However, 99 per cent of noise-induced hearing loss is preventable. At Expert Hearing Solutions, we are here to provide you with information and solutions. Whether it is diagnostic assessments, assistive listening devices, fitting of custom noise protection, or personal hearing devices, we have the knowledge and expertise you can trust.

72 ~ Killarney Market on 49th Killarney Market is a unique gem amongst the mega-grocery stores in Vancouver, offering specialized foods at great prices from around the globe. After successfully running ‘Tito’s Market’ for 12 years, brothers John and Tito Chiang made the decision to expand their business. So in 1993, Killarney Market was opened at its currently location in the historical Irish district of East Vancouver. Having been in the grocery foods business for over 17 years, Killarney Market is one of the few independent grocery stores left in Vancouver. Catering to our unique ethnic community, we specialize in Latin American, Asian and European groceries that are harder to find in the larger grocery chains. In addition to our vast selection of grocery and fresh produce, we have a specialized meat department where you can find just about any cut of meat. We also have a bakery and delicatessen department, serving a wide range of freshly baked goods and deli meats. For your garden and plants, don’t forget to visit our floral department.

There is a wonderful neighbourhood eatery called aptly Neighbour’s Restaurant and Pizza House, located on the the westside of Victoria Drive at 6493 Victoria. Family owned and operated, they serve homemade recipes in a warm and friendly atmosphere. When the Tsoukas family first opened it doors in 1982, they hoped to give this quaint neighbourhood a place that all could come whether it be a romantic dinner for two, a special celebration, or just a night out with the family. At various levels and understanding it is family that is at the heart of Neighbour’s Restaurant. A little further north on Victoria will bring you to Corkscrew Winemaking. Make your own wine!

VICTORIA DRIVE ~ 75 Italian Amarone with Grapeskins Italy’s most powerful wine, Amarone is renowned as a fruity, full-bodied, with rich intensity from the dried grapeskins included in the fermentation. Winexpert’s new Italian Amarone with Grape Skins is an intense, complex wine, with a wide array of flavours and aromas. Deep, nearly opaque red, this heavyweight exudes aromas of sour cherries, dark chocolate, stewed plums, dried fruits, anise, raisins, bitter almond, tobacco, leather and molasses, and has a spicyearthy bittersweet finish that goes on and on, from the huge volume of tannins. Pair with grilled beef, strong dry cheeses (Parmigiano Reggiano or Asiago), pasta with meat-based tomato sauces, antipasto, veal or roast pork.

Little Chinatown

Much has changed on Victoria Drive over the last decade, especially the area close to the intersection of Victoria Drive and East 41st Avenue. Not only have Asian businesses become abundant, but this area has become very central to the South Vancouver neighbourhood. However, “Little Chinatown is probably only going to resemble Chinatown to an extent, and will always show diversity in its businesses because of the market that it must accomodate. Unless over the next several decades, some extreme form of chain migration happens that brings all the Chinese into this South Vancouver neighbourhood, Victoria Drive will simply be a somewhat Chinese-dominant, yet still multicultural, East Vancouver neighbourhood.

COMMERCIAL DRIVE

A Melting Pot Of Cultures Commercial Drive (aka the Drive) used to be Vancouver’s ‘Little Italy,’ however, in the past 20 years it has become Vancouver’s bohemian culture pot. Think of San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury or Melbourne’s Brunswick Street. It is Vancouver’s home to a community of artists, hippies, lesbians, vegans, punks and immigrants. Commercial Drive is possibly the most authentic neighbourhood in the city. People are always interacting on the streets and there’s always a lively buzz in the atmosphere. The place is alive like a summer street in Montreal. This is rare in Vancouver. If you’re into organic food, authentic Italian coffee shops, poetry, cafe culture, political and environmental activism, alternative life styles and a general relaxing vibe - this is the place.

88 ~ Prestige Guitars Pasture To Plate Rafter 25 Ranch in Redstone BC is where it all began thirty two years ago with Jasmin and Felix and with their daughters Melanie, Barbara, Dominique and Fiona soon to follow. Fourteen years ago we decided to go organic and turning into the second Millennia we started to think and practice biodynamics after having absorbed a presentation on Bio-Dynamic Agriculture by Dr Andrew Lorand, right here at the ranch. Most of the ranch land is situated in our beloved Chilcotin Valley with some grazing and hay land north and west of Redstone. All in all our cattle graze about 60,000 hectares of range land which we lease from the Crown. The location was chosen for the simple reason that Jasmin and Felix fell in love with “The Drive” many years ago when they enjoyed a beer after a long day selling meat at the Trout Lake Farmer’s Market. Here at Daily Catch we strongly believe that we all have a responsibility to make sure the seafood we take from our worlds oceans is sustainable. Daily Catch is dedicated to doing its part by making sure everything we sell is not only a sustainable product but also was caught in a

sustainable method not harming other species of sea life.

The sustainability level of any given fresh fish product is always changing and we are committed to constantly educating ourselves and our staff on the current green list product and we also invite you

the consumer to bring in news paper clippings or anything else you can find on sustainability and post it up on our seafood news bulletin board. 100 ~ THE CULTCH

The York Theatre on Commercial Drive In early 2009, The Cultch announced a partnership with Wall Financial Corporation and the City of Vancouver to rescue and restore the York Theatre. It was a once lively and then abandoned performance venue located a short walk from The Cultch on Commercial Drive. Appearing on Heritage Vancouver’s 2008 list of top 10 endangered sights, it was a building with a rich history that needed saving. Considered to be among the oldest standing performance venues in Vancouver, the York theatre was built in 1913 by architect John McCarter. Having provided a start for many of the city’s well known acting and directing talents, as well as staging popular music acts, the York Theatre has undergone many transformations throughout its nearly hundred year existence. The space opened in 1913 as the Alcazar Theatre to a play titled Too Much Johnson by William Gillette. Since that time, the theatre has passed through many owners, operating under a variety of names including The Palace, The Little Theatre, The York Theatre and most recently the Raja Theatre where it operated quite successfully for a time as a venue for presenting Bollywood films. It was in the early 2000’s that attendance at the Raja Theatre started to decline. This lack of business forced the owners to sell the property in 2006. Two years later, Bruno Wall of Wall Financial Corporation purchased the cherished space from a developer who had plans to tear it down. The finished venue includes a 370 seat theatre for the proscenium stage as well as an orchestra pit. The renovations that were done to the theatre in the 1960’s have been taken down and replaced with a two story glass lobby that overlooks the street. The exterior of the theatre has been redone to reflect the art deco style of the 1940’s. www.thecultch.com

Since its founding in 1939, the RONA organization has enjoyed an interesting history, one that is memorable for its audacious and courageous decision-making. This brief document highlights that history. In order to get around a monopoly that was threatening their ability to access supplies, a group of hardware store operators formed Les Marchands en Quincaillerie Ltée in 1939. A few years later, Rolland Dansereau and Napoléon Piotte took charge of the company, which eventually became Le Groupe RONA Inc. In 1962, member-merchants acquired all shares in the company and adopted the cooperative system which is still favoured by the organization today. Tiny Finery is a space that allows its owners Stephanie and Keli to create, share and sell their artistic work. Our wee shop carries handmade jewellery, ceramics and gifts from a variety of local artists. Tiny Finery has a jewellery studio in the shop which allows customers to see the process that goes into making each piece. The shop will also hold evening classes so we can share our knowledge and love of creating with you! A favorite activity of mine as a child was to dress up in my grandmother’s vintage clothes and jewellery pretending I was a character in a British mystery program. She had an extensive collection of art nouveau brooches and costume jewellery. This led to a lifelong fondness for jewellery, textiles, and who-dunnits. Long Live Cats and Dogs is located in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood of East Vancouver. We began this business to truly help pets, educate consumers and allow people to make informed decisions when it comes to their pet’s health and longevity. We also strive to promote individual artisans and crafters by bringing in unique, handmade items for your pet, and we focus on items created with recycled or environmentallyfriendly materials. We will not sell any products, no matter how popular, if we feel it is detrimental to your pet’s health. All of our cat and dog treats, raw food and dry food are Canadian made.

Recent expert evaluation rated Storm Brewing’s Hurricane I.P.A. among the best in Canada.

128 ~ Mount Pleasant Community Centre

1 KINGSWAY ... in the heart of Mount Pleasant

An exciting new community facility is now open in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood! 1 Kingsway features a new community centre, library, child care centre, rental housing, and underground parking. This project reflects Vancouver’s City Plan vision for developing neighbourhood “centres” that bring together multiple civic services. Principles of sustainability will guide the planning and design of this project to provide a safe and healthy building which makes efficient use of our natural resources and leaves the best legacy for the citizens of Vancouver. A new 30,750 square foot Mount Pleasant Community Centre will meet the service demands of a growing community and will be more centrally located at 1 Kingsway, within the area it serves. The old community centre at 16th Avenue and Ontario Street has served the Mount Pleasant community for over 35 years. Over the past decade the centre’s cramped quarters, service limitations and need for seismic upgrading have made it clear that a new facility was needed. The new Mount Pleasant Branch library will double in size from 5,900 square feet to 12,000 square feet enabling Vancouver Public Library to better serve Mount Pleasant’s fast growing community. A larger branch will mean more books and more services including a computer training area, a larger children’s area, a reading lounge, and improvements in reference and information services. 3 Corners Child Care Centre is a brand new facility located in the Mount Pleasant Centre at 1 Kingsway.

The Harkness and Co. butcher shop and training annex prides itself in providing the finest meat and poultry to the local community and restaurants, as well as providing training classes in various food production techniques. There is a growing concern among Vancouverites regarding how we source and consume our food which we at Harkness & Co. wish to address. At Harkness & Co. all of our products are sourced from local, ethical organizations, and broken down in-house from the carcass in order to provide every cut of meat available. the hach is run by mother & daughter team Young and Tara, and was opened in June 2010. A love for high-quality stationery, plus a homesickness for Korea and Korean-made products informed the basis of our shop’s selection. Aside from our online shop, we run a small brick & mortar store located in Vancouver, Canada. Inside, you will find many items (including clothing, shoes, and accessories) that are not currently available online. Aside from honouring our Korean heritage, we carry items made locally, nationally, and in small doses, internationally. We also design and make our own products here in Vancouver.

UPTOWN MOUNT PLEASANT ~ 133

The General Public is a sushi joint with a nightclub vibe! The walls are decorated with pop culture paper mache sculptures (all sporting antlers). The theme of the restaurant is (if you look on the business card) MISO HORNY, hence the antlers or horns. It is all very tongue in cheek and aimed at the 20 something crowd. It is a place to experience and get lost in and not to take too seriously. Being a sushi joint there are all sorts of sushi dishes to try and some other items as well, such as a variety of Japanese Curry bowls. They have just opened on the corner of 17th and Main. This corner (at the very end of Mt. Pleasant) is really developing fast with a new Shoppers Drugs across 17th avenue and the venerable Granville Island Toy Company opposite on the eastside of Main Street.

The Granville Island Toy Company This store has quickly become a staple of young families on Vancouver’s East side. With its friendly neighborhood feel and helpful staff, shopping for toys has never been more convenient. Mention the name “The Granville Island Toy Company” and seldom will you find a Vancouverite who doesn’t know what you are talking about. Their flagship store (located in Kids Market on Granville Island) has been serving generations of families for almost 30 years. People who used to come in as children are now coming to the store with their own kids! The Granville Island Toy Company is a family run business so they care just as much as you do about the toys your children play. Unlike the “big box stores”, the owners and staff hand select what comes into the store. Product is based on quality, not on volume. “We focus on finding suppliers who care for kids as much as we do. If it’s not goodenough for our own children to play with, then it’s not good enough for our customers.” Their motto: “We don’t cease to play because we grow old, we grow old because we cease to play.” G.B Shaw

For over 15 years Murata has offered customers distinct Japanese tableware and gifts at a good value. Over this time we have seen more people in North America became interested in, and familiar with, Japanese culture - particularly with the Japanese food culture. We have also witnessed more people seeking Japanese decorative items to to personalize their homes. This seems to be a natural movement to be found in a multi-culture city like Vancouver. We do not want to be just an ordinary store selling Japanese tableware and gifts. We are hoping to better communicate with our customers by promoting the concept of “WA LIFESTYLE,” which brings you a feeling of warmth and peace in your life. The Japanese character “WA” originally meant harmony, peace, and balance. It was a guiding concept in Japanese culture with various subtle yet different associated meanings.

UPTOWN MOUNT PLEASANT ~ 147 Why choose compounds over comercially available products? Imagine if your child needs to take medication, but is disgusted with the taste of the large pill. She spits it onto the floor. You toss the dirty pill into the garbage and try again with another pill. The same instance occurs. Was part of the pill absorbed? What do you do now? What if the pill was flavoured and smaller? Imagine how easy it would be for your kid to swallow kidsized pills. The medicine stays in, they enjoy the taste and you won’t have wasted any of the pills! Medications are often difficult for a variety of patients to take. Think outside of children: people afraid of needles, the elderly, those with allergies, and even our furry friends at home! Medications on the market can be filled with ingredients causing the patient to reject the medication. Our compounding is accessible for your needs, and can modify medications by extracting certain products like gluten sugar, soy, casein and even dyes. Plus we are able to customize dosages, forms, as well as strengths, so that medications can be taken as both prescribing doctor and patient see fit! 152 ~ A J Brooks

For over 30 years we have delivered high quality outdoor products to the Greater Vancouver area under the AJ Brooks name. We now bring our philosophy of high quality and fair prices to outdoor lovers everywhere. We are proud to offer two of the finest lines available. The Meindl family is renowned worldwide for the outstanding German craftsmanship of their footwear. We have been showcasing this excellent line for over thirty of the 300 plus years they have been in business. For over 50 years Fjallraven has been one of Europe’s most innovative producers of durable, high quality, and sustainable products in both classic and modern styles. In the 1970’s, a dedicated group of forward-thinking folks from the Kootenays convinced the BC government of the day to create the Valhalla Provincial Park in an isolated sub-range of the Southern Selkirk Mountains, near New Denver and Nelson. Remote, rugged, huge and spectacular, the Valhalla Park has been our favourite mountain playground for 30 years. When we started Valhalla Pure Outfitters in 1990 to make specialty outdoor clothing and gear, we didn’t need to look to some exotic location on the far side of the planet. The rapid weather changes and punishing wearand-tear of the Valhalla Range have taught us all we need to know about the requirements our gear would need.

Here at the Bike Doctor we aim to provide you with excellent bike service with a smile. We ride bikes ourselves and we know how enjoyable cycling can be with the right bike, the right fit and the right information. Pol (or Paul as his mum knows him) has been Bike Doctoring professionally since 1985, but he and his brother built custom bikes as far back as 1975. He opened the first Bike Doctor store in Vancouver, BC in 1991. He’s always been very passionate about the benefits of riding a bike and customers appreciate his honesty and enthusiasm. Locals say we’re one of the city’s best bike shops Over the years the Bike Doctor always ranks near the top of community “Best Of” polls. In the last year, readers of Westender, Vancouver Courier, The Georgia Straight and Burnaby NewsLeader newspapers voted the Bike Doctor one of the top 5 bike shops in Vancouver.

OUTDOOR ALLEY ~ 153

At Eco Outdoor Sports, our mission is to provide customers with the best clothing and equipment for their outdoor lives. We do this by hiring the best team of associates, people who love the outdoors and strive to help customers every day, and by stocking the best brands, like The North Face... Our_ humble beginning started in the winter of 1997 when a group of professional individuals from various backgrounds got together to open an outdoor store. They had no previous retail experience but shared some common passions; living an active life enjoying the outdoors, pushing the limits in what they did. As lovers of the outdoors they were psyched to make sure others enjoyed outdoor adventures too by providing the best hiking boots, walking shoes and winter clothing from quality great brands they identified with like The North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Keen and Salomon.

What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘hill’? Forests, meadows full of wildflowers, and a trail winding around a picturesque glacial lake? Do your visions come with a soundtrack? We believe an essential part of the outdoor experience is auditory – the sounds of birds chirping, the wind blowing though the trees, trickling streams . . . we at Alpine Start Outfitters like to experience nature through all our senses. Well made gear will keep you warm and dry on the trail, the better to enjoy the more pleasant sensations brought to you by Mother Nature. We want you to be safe and comfortable during your time outdoors, so we strive to provide quality products to keep you that way. At La Bicicletta Pro Shop, we’ve been committed supporters of Vancouver’s road, time trial, track and cyclocross communities since opening our doors in 1984. And though our looks may have changed over the years, our commitment to providing superior customer service has not. Come in today and see why La Bicicletta is Vancouver’s road bike store. Our mission at La Bicicletta is to encourage new riders and support cyclists of all abilities. Our customers range from life-long cycling enthusiasts, to new cyclists, aspiring competitors, professional road racers, and performance-minded cyclists and triathletes alike.

Our retail store has been in continuous operation since October 1988, and eAutomobilia was launched in October 2000. You can find both new and used items in the store, and there is fresh (and sometimes musty) stock arriving daily. It is the only store of its kind in British Columbia, and carries one of the largest diversity of automotive collectibles in North America. Wilkinson’s Automobilia/eAutomobilia has it all: Scale model cars, books, shop manuals, posters, art work, current and vintage magazines, as well as pins, clothing and caps. FALSE CREEK FLATS

Former Home Of The 2010 Olympic Village The area bordering Main Street to Cambie Street and from False Creek up to Broadway, has been transformed. This part of Vancouver, known as the False Creek Flats, has long been an industrial area, with light manufacturing being carried on primarily. Over the years there has been a slow transformation taking place, with restaurants and eateries becoming ever more plentiful. Companies such as Toko Foods and Milano Coffee still carry on their manufacturing plants but they also run higher profile eateries, at street level. The area is bustling with other interesting businesses as well. Eclectic in nature, one never knows what one will find around the next corner, which is all part of the fun.

160 ~ Watts Costume Rentals The development taking place was home to the Olympic Village in February 2010. The Village is now a valuable legacy, both for the community and for sport. The Vancouver Village has been developed into a model sustainable community with market and affordable housing, parkland, and office and shopping complexes as seen in the artists conception below. Businesses presently located on the Flats, besides Toko and Milano, which are worth taking a look at include The Butler Did It, a sandwich stop on 2nd Avenue on the way to the Cambie bridge. Emelle’s Catering on 7th Avenue, The Party Bazaar on 2nd, for all your party costumes. A&B Party Rentals on west 4th Avenue.Upright Decor, rentals and event design, located on West 5th Avenue. Solly’s Bagelry located at 7th and Yukon Street. Back up on Broadway, rent a bike at Rain City Bikes and see the Flats in style. They are located at Manitoba and Broadway, just a few steps up the hill. The Jacqeline Connor Collection is located at 46 west 6th Avenue, for the latest in fashion. As well, a few designer outlet stores can be found. There are two framing galleries, one located on the Flats, the other located on second avenue just east of Main Street. The one on the Flats is called Final Touch Frames and the one on 2nd Avenue is called Frame Of Mind. The best time to visit the Flats, is during the week as not everyone is open on the weekends. I have only mentioned a few of the many interesting businesses, so come down and have a look for yourself. (Photo by Evan Leeson)

FALSE CREEK FLATS ~ 161 Tired of the same old costume shop? Try Watts. Don’t let the frumpy name fool you: if you’re not impressed by the homage to our founder, the brilliant thespian Sir Albert Watts, who brought Watts Costumes to Vancouver from England over 65 years ago, then think of us by this acronym: Wardrobe is Abundant, Theatrical, Top-notch, and Sanitary. At Watts Costumes you won’t be greeted by a surly counter clerk, tossing you a thrift-store throwaway bedecked with stains, cigarette holes and odors that make you feel a tad more intimate with your predecessor than you might wish. And then double-charged for the privilege. No. Here your festive spirit will ignite the moment you ascend the stairs to our colourful establishment - an extravaganza of dazzling costumery, efficiently managed by our happy and helpful team. (Equally happy and helpful at Halloween but a bit more bedraggled.) The rest of the year keeps us busy with corporate events, Christmas, Easter, theme weddings, theatre, the film industry and just about any occasion you can imagine. Our 1950’s jukebox, disco ball, barber chair and theatre seats add to the distinctive ambiance. The majority of our costumes are one-of-a kind, lovingly crafted by our very own in-house designer.

We are committed to the excellent dental health and general well being of our patients. Our goal is to design a course of treatment that matches your unique values and lifestyle. We want you to look and feel your best at every stage of your active life and of course... to Smile. Our services include almost all aspects of dentistry, including cosmetic, family and general dentistry. Terra Breads Our first Bakery/CafÊ opened on West 4th Avenue in Kitsilano, Vancouver in 1993. Since then we have been making true artisan breads using traditional methods developed over thousands of years. We mix quality ingredients—many of them organic—with natural starters in a long, slow artisan process. This rising method transforms the flours and grains into flavourful and nutritious breads with a well developed structure, a beautiful crust and a moist interior crumb. In this hands-on process we carefully watch and feel the doughs as they change in the varying ambient conditions of each day. After rising, the breads are baked in stone-hearth ovens at each of our four bakeries. We bake rustic pastries, serve fresh sandwiches, homemade soups and salads. We also offer artisan Granola and Pecan Fruit Crisps.

At Village Cleaners, we value the health and well being of our customers and the planet. We strive to provide the highest standards of service and are committed to making ecofriendly choices for a sustainable future. We aim to be the leading choice of cleaning service for the discerning consumer. Our state-of-the-art processes, fabric care expertise, and environmentally-sound practices will allow us to deliver on all of our promises without compromising our clients demand for quality.

FALSE CREEK FLATS ~ 165 Tap & Barrel Our menu of comfort food classics lets the exceptional quality of ingredients take center stage. At Tap & Barrel, this philosophy begins at a local level, which is why we plan to work closely with area growers and purveyors to ensure the produce, meat, fish and chicken are of the highest standard. Everything is prepared from scratch daily and uniquely presented. We are also careful to ensure sustainability. Tap & Barrel will feature an impressive selection of local microbrew draft beer, from classic lagers to more obscure ales and stouts. A long-standing interest in art, décor, architecture and music also factor into the dining experience to enhance the senses.

Subway We are located on Salt Street, on the corner past Urban Fare and across from the big red barn. Be sure and check out our beautiful new store. We of course have all your Subway favorites and while your exploring False Creek and the village, our sandwiches will keep you fit and healthy! The Village is growing with new businesses coming in all the time. The big red barn (one of the more visible landmarks in the village) will be occupied this spring by a beer establishment with live entertainment. It should be quite an attraction ad we are right next door.

Whether you are planning a private party, corporate function, or a wedding, we can explore all the design options that are possible to make your event spectacular. The event design process starts with an initial consultation meeting to determine the type of event you wish to have. We can uncover the “design & style” of the event, that will be enhanced in the décor. Often there is a particular colour palette to set the mood. If you are having a small private party or a large corporate gala you may have a specific theme that will be represented. Using innovative décor we will give your guests something unique to experience and indulge their senses. When designing weddings most of our clients wish the décor to be fresh, simple, classic and elegant, with romantic touches that would reflect their own personal style. 168 ~ Frame of Mind Swiss Bakery has provided Vancouver with a variety of delectable goods for close to 20 years. Swiss Bakery cultivates baking in a European style that accentuates original and hand crafted goods, like our Artisan breads, pastries, and cakes. Our soft, traditional German pretzel is one of Swiss Bakery’s specialties and is one of Vancouver Magazine’s Top 100 Best Things to Eat and Drink in Vancouver (2009). This amazing bakery...3rd avenue off Main is going to become my weekend hangout if it’s not careful! I stepped inside and was immediately reminded of bakeries back home growing up. All different breads, just that home made look and feel to everything... Picked up many breads which were devoured at home (there was a pecan one which they cut up for us and we managed to make it last a week!). There is some seating inside and out, and the usual choice of hot drinks. Must try the coffee next time!

MAIN & 2ND AVENUE

Shops Near The Main Street Skytrain Station Since the rise of all the sky train stations around Greater Vancouver, shops have sprung up around their base. At Main Street, stores have relocated north on Main and along Terminal Avenue on both sides. This is where the new Long & McQuade Music store is located and you really need to check it out. A pop into the train station will lend itself to a few more shops and fast food stops including a MacDonalds. Up on 2nd Avenue going east you will find Frame Of Mind and a few other interesting shops and down below on 1st Avenue are several more including the Elliott Louis Gallery. Next to the train station is The Party Bazaar and Cloverdale Paints. A Tim Horton has also opened nearby.
