Beauty

On the nail... top ten nail myths

by Vanilla beauty expert Sue Carter

1

4

2

5

Do white spots on my nails mean a calcium deficiency?

Not necessarily, white spots are a nail disorder called Leukonychia. They are common but are usually caused by a mild or moderate injury to the nail matrix (base of fingertip) and they almost always grow out with time. Will polish last longer if I keep it in the fridge?

Refridgerating your polish will not keep it fresher. While the cool temperature will slow the thickening of the polish, the best way to keep the polish in good condition is to be sure to securely tighten the bottle tops after using, and shake well before each use.

3

Will gels or acrylics ruin my nails forever?

It is a common misconception that gel is healthier for the natural nail than acrylic for overlays. The main difference (other than wearability and application technique) is how each product is removed. Acrylic dissolves in acetone, and hard gel needs to be buffed off. If either is removed incorrectly, damage can be caused to the nail plate.

48

Nails need to breathe

Everything the nail plate needs to grow and function is provided by your body, in the blood stream, not by the outside elements. Keeping them polished will help to keep in the natural oils and help them grow. You should clip your cuticles regularly for nail health.

Your cuticles are actually the only thing keeping germs from out of your nail beds, so if you clip your cuticles, you expose the nail beds to bacteria and the cuticle will grow back thicker than before.

6

Placing wet nails in cold water dries them.

To get polish to dry requires the evaporation of solvents, using a quick drying spray on the nails or placing them in front of a fan will help the polish dry quicker.

7

Gelatine will help your nails be healthier longer.

There’s never been any scientific proof that gelatine strengthens nails nor does downing more milk or other calcium-rich products. Overall good nutrition, including plenty of protein will help though.

8

Avoid nail products that have chemicals in them.

This would be literally impossible to do. There is no such thing as a “chemical-free” nail product (or as an “all-natural” artificial nail product).

9

Never file back-and-forth on a natural nail.

Filing back and forth won’t harm the natural nail plate if the proper abrasives and the correct downward pressure are used, meaning a 180-grit or higher file and a light touch. Don’t use a file with a grit below 180 on your natural nail because it can cause excessive damage no matter what type of filing motion is used.

10

You can’t have anything on your nails during pregnancy.

There is absolutely no reason to believe that it is harmful to wear artificial nail enhancements or polish during pregnancy. Artificial nail products harden within three minutes, eliminating the chance of any product penetrating beyond the top layers of the nail plate. It is extremely unlikely that artificial nails are harmful during pregnancy.

food & Drink acceptable, which was certainly a relief to me as I’d already considered doing exactly that. As we enjoyed some delightfully fresh ciabatta with oil and balsamic vinegar, we ordered our drinks. From the Last’s hugely extensive wine list (I’m told it’s not unusual for them to have over 100 wines on offer) I chose the 2012 Chuselan Côtes du Rhône Villages, while my dining partner decided to have a freezing cold Bitburger (it was a very warm evening) from the choice of local and European beers.

idea, and the accompanying rocket salad added a perfect peppery finish. My partner ordered a main course of Crispy Chilli Beef with noodles, and this also more than lived up to our expectations. The beef was mouthwateringly tender (there was plenty of it too), and there was exactly the right degree of heat in the dish. The seared peppers mixed in with the noodles came in for particular praise. Although the desserts sounded mighty tempting (we both wondered what would arrive

at the table if we ordered the Pimms strawberry, prosecco jelly, orange purée, Greek yoghurt, and honey ice cream!) our meals had been so lovely we really didn't want to lose those tastes and flavours so quickly. Wonderful food, extremely helpful and friendly staff (they really did make us feel very welcome), a great atmosphere – if you’re looking for a memorable meal in a lovely location, take a trip to NorwichOver-the-Water and make the Last the first on your list. n Reviewer: nicky secker-bligh

o start, I ordered the Crispy haloumi with toasted cashew nuts, beetroot, spring onion and sweet chilli dressing. Now, I've some experience in cooking with haloumi, so I was very impressed with the light and delicately-toasted cheese when it arrived. The chilli dressing was superb - so much so, in fact, that for the first time in my life I actually ate some beetroot! My partner had decided to open with the Smoked bacon, avocado and blue cheese salad, and it was a beautiful-looking dish. We both thought the blue cheese would overpower and dominate the other flavours, but it was all perfectly balanced – and the smoked bacon was particularly noteworthy. My main course was the sautéed potato gnocchi, with Binham blue cheese and mushrooms. This generouslyportioned dish was faultless – the sauce was creamy and rich, the gnocchi was light, the quirky mix of mushrooms was a great August/September 2014 Vanilla

I

would bet that the first thing you say as you breeze through the Georgian door at the Maddermarket Kitchen is ‘Oh!’. As in, ‘Oh, I hadn’t realised it was here.’ Tucked amongst The Lanes but ridiculously easy to find once you know, The Maddermarket Kitchen has previously been a word-ofmouth affair, frequented by those who’ve probably felt quite smug about their brilliant fine-dining discovery. Word has spread well though and we arrive to a warm welcome from Manager, Jonathan Crinnion who seats us at a cosy table in the dining room of the former merchant house. Head Chef Stewart Duffield has come to Norwich by way of St. Benedicts in the city and Tom Aikens’ Michelin-starred restaurant in Chelsea. Launching The Maddermarket Kitchen was to fulfil a lifelong ambition – to run his own restaurant (Stewart and his young family live in the house

above, so he can dedicate himself to the business). So now we know the story behind Maddermarket Kitchen, we’re expecting some really good food! We’ve brought our own wine and as we take a few sips, our starters arrive. The Asparagus, Pea and Leek soup is delicious and the taste of fresh green pea leaps from the dish. The Grilled Goats Cheese Brushetta is a perfect balance of herb bread and tangy goats cheese with a fragrant basil oil, which adds to this favourite of mine. On to the main course and the Butternut Squash, Pea, Leek and Parmesan Risotto is rich and creamy with tender rice, sweet squash, fresh greens and a burst of Parmesan. My guest savours the ‘tender and juicy’ Char Grilled Chump of Lamb with roasted Mediterranean vegetables. The accompanying Hasselback Potato causes a bit of a stir. Declared ‘delicious’, these Swedish spuds are sliced (not all

Daytona

Gripping, funny, poignant and full of mystery, Daytona is a play with not one but two love stories at its heart. Joe and Elli share a love of ballroom dancing and are practising their routines for the next big competition. Despite constant bickering, the love they have shared for nearly fifty years is clear. Then one night, out of the blue, Joe’s long-lost brother Billy bursts back into their lives with an extraordinary story to tell. Starring Olivier Award winner Maureen Lipman, and Harry Shearer is known to millions as the voice of many different characters for The Simpsons. Tickets £6.50 - £27

Arms and the Man

by George Bernard Shaw To Raina Petkoff and her fiancée Sergi, love is chivalry, honour, glamour, and gallantry. After Sergei’s accidental triumph in battle, his cavalry charge scatters the Austrian invaders and the Swiss mercenaries, and by some twist of fate one of those mercenaries finds his way onto Raina’s moonlit balcony. A mercenary who carries chocolate instead of bullets, who needs the wit of a woman to save him, and in exchange turns her life upside down. Bernard Shaw uses his unmatched ability with words to shine a light on how love can be the catalyst to break down the barriers that class and prejudice create. Tickets £8-£12 www.maddermarket.co.uk
