NEWS

We need to start talking about lung cancer From reader Kate Reddington I discovered the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation just a few weeks before my husband died from the disease. It was too late to benefit him, but they have been supporting me ever since. I wanted to give something back so early in 2019 I became a charity advocate for them. The more I have been involved the more horrified I have become at just how little is known about lung cancer, particularly in regard to women. It is the most common cause of cancer death in the UK. Each year around 35,340 people die from lung cancer – tthe same asfrom breast, ovarian and cervical cancer put together. When you look at the figures for women only, they are no less appalling. Around 16,300 die from lung cancer the same as from breast, ovarian and cervical cancer put together. The prevailing perception still seems to be that lung cancer only affects older, probably male, smokers. It. Does. Not. While lung cancer rates generally are falling, the number of cases among young non-smoking women is on the increase. You can hardly open a women’s magazine without finding articles about how to check for signs of, living with or raising funds for breast cancer. We do not talk about women and lung cancer. Even GPs and cancer specialists often don’t consider that women get lung cancer. As a result too many are not diagnosed until Stage 4 when the cancer is

incurable. Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation’s #likeme campaign highlights the stories of these women, some of whom are only in their 30s. Symptoms of lung cancer can include: ● Persistent cough that lasts three weeks or more ● Breathlessness ● Repeat chest infections ● Chest and/or shoulder pain ● Change in a long term cough, or a cough that gets worse ● Unexplained fatigue or lack of energy

● Hoarseness ● Finger clubbing ● Blood clots These can also be symptoms of a variety of other illnesses; but if these have been excluded and your symptoms persist ask your GP to refer you for tests for lung cancer. Better your fears are unfounded than a reality it is too late to cure.

● More information on how

to take care of your lungs, risk factors, signs and symptoms and where to find advice and support can be found at www.roycastle.org

Onwards & Upwards! Hurrah... That That’s January and February out of the way, sorry to ‘wish time away’ but can we have two or thress April and Mays please? Cake & Catwalk celebrates ten years of being a shop. That’s That quite a milestone in these challenging retail times. So, instead of me thinking of retiring, I am expanding. Good news for those who like a trip out to a tea and shopping destination! I have a pop-up mini shop out at SALAD DAYS INTERIORS which is at the NUTSHELL TEA ROOMS in Stowupland. It’s a really lovely barn with lots of different shops and goodies and open every day except Wednesdays. New stock is arriving daily and it’s full of colour. ENVY is in and I have found a new jewellery wholesaler with the most vibrant and exciting colours. The short necklaces start at £18 and the long are only £22. For SOYA CONCEPT, I have chosen creams and army greens with some great patterns to mix it up. They are a Danish brand, at great prices and quality. New POSTCARD FROM BRIGHTON will be out on sale by mid March, along with POMODORO. REAL LIVES

“Now we can both move on and remain on good terms”

The no-blame divorce MY PROBLEM: My husband, David, and I had been married for close to ten years. Whilst neither of us had wronged the other, as such, we had drifted off in very different directions and were pretty much living separate lives. As painful as it was to admit it, we both agreed that our marriage had come to an end. I didn’t wish ill on David and I know that the feeling was mutual. I had heard in the news that it was now possible to have a no-blame divorce and so this seemed like the perfect solution for David and me. Whilst we didn’t have any children to consider, we were still very considerate of each others’ feelings. We knew we no longer wanted to spend our lives together, but had no desire to end things in an acrimonious manner. LUCY, WOODBRIDGE

26

HOW IT WAS SOLVED: A friend from work had recently gone through a divorce and had told me how supportive and efficient she’d found Barker Gotelee to be, so I contacted them to make an appointment. I met with Amanda Erskine from the family team and instantly felt that I was going to be in safe hands. I explained the situation between David and me and that I wanted to begin divorce proceedings. I also highlighted that I was keen that there was no finger pointing from either party and so could we opt for the new no-blame divorce.

A

manda explained that, contrary to how it was seemingly reported in the press, the new law had not yet been passed. I, therefore, had three options. The first was Vanilla March/April 2020

REAL LIVES

to wait for the new law to be implemented, but there were no guarantees as to if or when this would happen. The second was for David and me to remain separated for two years, after which time it is possible to file for divorce without apportioning blame. The final option was to begin proceedings on the basis that one of us would demonstrate to the court that the marriage had irretrievably broken down due to the other’s behaviour. The latter option meant that proceedings could begin immediately and Amanda reassured me that any allegations could be worded to be as mild as possible, thereby keeping things as amicable as they could be, given the circumstances.

W

e were both in no doubt that we wanted to end the marriage and, given we were awkwardly still living in the same house, I felt it best to progress things sooner rather than later for both of our sakes. I gave Amanda the go ahead to proceed with the divorce petition on the understanding that, as she suggested, the allegations would be as carefully worded as they could be to avoid igniting the situation. In addition to filing the petition, Amanda explained that it would be advisable for us to start discussing how we would divide our financial assets. This is so a financial order could be drawn up and filed with the court at the relevant point in the divorce process. Something else she did to expedite matters was to file everything online. Having not

been in this situation before, I had no idea that was possible. Amanda said that this would normally result in the divorce being granted a few months sooner than via the old paper system. So, relieved that the matter was now in hand, I left Amanda to begin proceedings. Amanda wrote to David and outlined the draft allegations, all the while being careful to make this as un-confrontational as it could be. I was grateful that David had sought legal representation too and, fortunately, he came back and accepted the petition. As part of her discussions with David’s solicitor, Amanda also negotiated the financial settlement on my behalf. Once again, I was so grateful not to have had to do this in the emotional state I was in,

meaning that David and I could come through this remaining on as good terms as possible.

S

IX MONTHS on, our divorce has now been granted, our finances are sorted and we are both looking forward to the future. Of course, I will always be sad that it reached this point, but we are both too young to have remained in the situation we were in. We now have our whole lives ahead of us. I will remain forever thankful to Amanda for her support and wisdom and in helping David and me reach this point in the quickest, most painless and friendliest way possible. I truly couldn’t recommend her highly enough. n

ADVICE

MAKING A PLAN

I

180 YEARS OF SERIVICE Our family-run funeral service offers experience and sensitivity to help make saying goodbye to your loved one personal to you. www.farthingfunerals.co.uk

N SPRING while the daffodils are flowering and the light extends in the day, we are uplifted, and we look forward to the year ahead. Flowers celebrate and commemorate events in our lives. We often use them to remember people we have loved and who we have lost. They are in our thoughts throughout the year. When we are with family, we become aware of how time has passed with children, grandchildren, and perhaps even greatgrandchildren growing up. We are not always comfortable talking about our wishes for our funeral, even if our thoughts turn to those things. One way in which you can inform your family, either with them or by yourself, is to discuss your thoughts and ideas with a funeral director. There is an opportunity to leave your wishes with us at Farthing Funeral Service, without obligation. The arrangements you choose can be amended at any time in the future. Alternatively you can download our My Wishes form from our website. Our funeral directors Luke, Andrea, Chris and Sharon, are available if you would like to discuss arrangements in advance, to give you greater awareness of the choices available and to give you peace of mind. HOMES

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE

with property expert

SHARNIE ROGERS

E

VEN WHEN the process runs smoothly, selling a house can be a lengthy endeavour. However, in the first month of 2020, new buyers registering to purchase property rose at the fastest rate on record for this time of year. Nearly 65,000 new properties were marketed nationally over January, with rising interest levels from buyers suggesting a greater confidence in the outlook of the housing market for 2020. Facilitating a speedy sale for your home can be made simple with some sensible preparation. CAPITALISING ON POTENTIAL

Identifying and harnessing the unique potential in a property is crucial for helping to set it apart from neighbouring competition. One of the most lucrative ways to capitalise property value is to look for opportunities to maximise

30

Facilitating a speedy sale for your home can be made simple with some sensible preparation

internal space, and any obvious renovations should be considered a worthwhile investment. For example, properties that have sought to remove interior walls or extend garden space will be instantly more desirable to potential buyers. Capitalise on what makes your house different, feature them in photographs and styling to really set your property ahead of the competition. THE QUESTION OF PRICE Similar houses in your road may not be the same value for a variety of reasons; perhaps some have south facing gardens, are closer to a main road or suffer from noise pollution. An agent should offer a detailed knowledge and understanding of the local market, providing realistic, informed guidance on the price of your property. The nearest comparable property might not lie a couple of doors down; it might be one around the corner. Window shopping around the local area is the best tactic to get privately informed guidance on the true value of your home. Pricing your home sensibly at the outset aims to draw in potential buyers; competitive pricing, particularly at the top end of the market, is key when market conditions are challenging.

PHOTOGRAPHS AND STYLING

When it comes to marketing visuals, using a professional photographer can have a huge impact on initial interest and viewing requests. Sellers should also consider the suitability of the photographer they use, as some properties with particularly high-end interiors will suit more lifestyle and feature-led shots to reach the ideal buyer. Elevated or drone photography can also help with a property in a really special location. At Strutt & Parker we offer advice into the best ways to prepare and position your home for a successful sale. For further insights on how to get the most out of your property, contact us today. T

HERE HAS been another big development at the Tuddenham Road Dental Surgery to add to our storyline! Established in Museum Street in the 1950s, we moved to the current location on leafy Tuddenham Road in Ipswich in the 1960s. A hygienist’s surgery was added in the 1980s to provide a better service to patients alongside the two dental surgeries. Now we are pleased to announce the addition of a third dental surgery! Our practice prides itself on exceptional care and our patients’ whole journey is important to

us. The number of loyal patients that have been with the practice from the very beginning attest to the continuing care that we provide. Seeing three and even four generations of the same family really makes us appreciate the value of good patient relationships. Patients can always look forward to seeing staff members that they know well when they visit us. This is especially helpful when there is a need to manage a nervous disposition. The team enjoys working together and patient testimonials often mention how friendly and welcoming

everyone is. Having had Sue Bilner as a hygienist here for more than 30 years, and our practice manager, Cindy Sharp, for more than 20 years gives invaluable continuity. The principals, Mr Willem Hendriks and Mr Johnny Paraskevopoulos have been with the practice for 10 and 5 years respectively. They have their individual patient lists, however they call on each other for support to provide of cover when away on courses or holiday or even to work out the best treatment plan when faced with a complicated case.

The addition of a third surgery gives patients even more security – knowing there will always be someone on hand if there is a dental emergency. We have been very fortunate to acquire the services of Mr Anis Jaleel, who has recently sold his practice in London after 25 years there. Initially he will be seeing patients on one day a week and then increasing to more days as word of his gentleness and patience spreads. His new patients have all commented on how well he explains the treatments he will be doing, and how calming he is. He really is

very good at treating nervous patients! We provide the whole spectrum of dental treatment between us; with Mr Hendriks having a special interest in cosmetically-focused, short-term orthodontics and Smile Design, while Mr Paraskevopoulos places implants and can provide crowns, onlays, inlays and veneers on the same day, using his state of

the art CEREC milling machine. All of us offer exceptional general dental care, always focusing on providing a healthy, functioning dentition in the first place, while providing patients with teeth they can be proud of. FACES OF THE FUTURE

At Vanilla, we love to bring you the best of the best — the most exciting and innovative people and businesses. Here, we showcase some new local talent that we know will make it big in the future.

ALBA JEWELLERY JACQUELINE DAWSON

Definitely one to watch, Jacqueline’s gorgeous and innovative jewellery is already a must-have. The mother of three and primary school teacher launched Alba only recently, but has been making pieces for friends and family for several years. “I needed to find my own style and a sustainable way of working with recycled metals, brass, silver and gold. I buy recycled metal from Hatton Garden; it’s more expensive but really important to me. All my packaging is recycled and recyclable. I use minimal electricity and generate very little waste. “My design style perfectly marries my two loves of art and maths in equal measure, and everything is handmade and ethically made, can be worn every day and is affordable. I began buying my own tools and equipment and teaching myself through playing and experimenting, and over the past few years have set up my own workshop, growing slowly, in my own time and learning so much along the way. I began supplying local shops a couple of years ago; the very gorgeous Vanil in Woodbridge and Mistley Kitchen in Mistley, and this is proving very successful. “More and more people are becoming aware that we need to consume less all round, yet people always want to adorn themselves with things to make them feel good. So if I can help people do this in a sustainable way, that makes me happy.” Find Alba Jewellery at Vanil and online at alba-jewellery.co.uk

ROBSON STANNARD

A hugely talented illustrator and designer, Robson is already much in demand for his groundbreaking work, and is combining his two passions of fashion and art. Born and raised in Suffolk, he has been on a fast-track to success ever since he graduated from a Fashion Illustration course at London College of Fashion. “I spent three years in London and was selected as part of the BA Press Show for the University, held in Spitalfields Market. I then graduated and was immediately picked up by Varoom Magazine as their top 15 worldwide Art School graduates of 2017. I was also included by CassArts annual Fashion Illustration competition, showing in a gallery space in Soho, and approached by both GQ and SHOWStudio to cover Milan and New York fashion weeks. I ended up drawing live from the ShowStudio Gallery in Belgravia (Ian Fleming’s house) for a week. I have also done illustrations for a skateboard company, and a Belgian knitwear business. “My work has been included in a SHOWstudio charity auction, raising awareness for Breast Cancer, and I was commissioned to produce a pink illustration. All this work was featured within the gallery and then sold online. Since March 2018 I have been completely freelance, based in Suffolk, selling prints and original paintings, mainly via Instagram and my website. “I would love to give back to the fashion illustration community, perhaps leading a series of workshops, giving talks about my experiences, or helping new and emerging talent. I really want to push myself.” Shop prints and original artworks at robsonstannard.format.com/ @Robson_Stannard

Always a creative child, Maria started designing and sewing from a very young age, and this creative passion has brought about a beautiful luxury, bespoke lingerie brand that celebrates and empowers sensuality. “I studied lingerie pattern making at London College of Fashion. I was working freelance as a seamstress from home, and my older sister Theresa showed me some cheap panties she had bought, and suggested that I could make something much better and sell them on eBay. That’s how the idea was born. “The older I get, the more importance I put on my underwear. I believe lingerie is your own universe that you create every morning when you get dressed. It sets the tone and mood for the rest of the day and, most importantly, you can choose to show it off or have it as your cheeky little secret! “Maria Callisto cater for women who want something different from the high street lingerie market. We offer custom sizing for most of our lingerie, as well as a bespoke service for brides, that uses a remnant of your wedding dress, making the piece completely unique – a keepsake and a wonderful memory of the happiest day of your life. “Although I mostly sell on my website, www.mariacallisto.com, I occasionally hold pop-ups in London, so keep a look out on my instagram @ maria_callisto for future events.”

Sue's two businesses: Image Salon (top) and Glow Clinic

illa Van PORT RE

21 YEARS IN THE BEAUTY BUSINESS

I

KNOW YOU should never ask a lady her age, but when I first discovered Sue Adams, (owner of Image Salon and Glow Clinic in Ipswich) was 52 my mouth dropped open. With sparkling eyes and glowing skin, Sue could easily pass for at least 15 years younger. Just like her clients, I wanted to find out all of her insider beauty secrets. It was certainly a case of, ‘I’ll have whatever she is having!’ I began my TV career in the beauty industry, working on ITV This Morning as the shows resident beauty expert for 4 years. I trained as a professional make-up artist, so I share Sue’s understanding of how looking good can really make a huge difference to how you feel.

42

This year Sue is celebrating 21 years in the beauty industry and I wanted to find out from her how things have changed in this time. Sue didn’t begin her career in the beauty business until her thirties as she had her two daughters at quite a young age. Once her children were a bit older Sue set up her first independent beauty business in 1999, originally working within a hairdresser, then later opening her first beauty salon. Sue’s salon, Image, proved so successful, 11 years ago it relocated to larger premises on Old Foundry Road, which it still occupies today. Two years ago Sue went on to launch Glow Clinic so she could

focus on non-invasive beauty and aesthetic treatments. Sue currently employs 11 staff and credits part of her success to her wonderful team, “without the hard working and dedication of my team, I could not continue to live my dream, I owe so much to them.” When Sue began working in beauty she noticed that her clientele was mainly limited to a certain type of woman – more mature in age and with more disposable income and time of their hands. Other women would get their nails done as a rare treat. These days, having nice nails and beauty treatments has become less of a treat and more a part of essential maintenance. Sue has noticed that the younger generation

BEAUTY

invest a lot of their money into looking good, from lashes, to facials and eyebrows – they are a generation who want it all. In order to keep ahead of the game in such a fast moving industry, Sue travels all over the world to discover the latest beauty and aesthetic treatments. “It’s really helpful that one of my daughters is a beauty distributor and she lives in Dubai, and she always tips me off about the latest innovations and trends. With more therapists going mobile and working from home, I have to be sure I stay ahead of the game and offer the best possible client service and experience.”

N

EVER ONE to shy away from hard work, Sue credits her work ethic to being successful: “I love working so much, I find I never need to take a break, I just keep going. I perform beauty treatments all day and then spend my evenings doing marketing and other administrative tasks.” I am inspired by Sue’s pro-active attitude as she tells me that she always explores different ways to advertise and promote her business, from digital marketing, to more traditional leaflet drops. What I love so much about this woman is her genuine love and passion for what she does and the great satisfaction she feels when her clients leave either Image salon or Glow Clinic feeling great.. “I just love empowering women,” Sue beams. She truly believes in supporting the local community which has been such a part of her success story. She always supports any charity that approaches her for raffle prizes and donations – her policy is to never say no, which is incredibly generous. In my career I am very lucky to be gifted beauty treatments and experiences in top clinics and salons around London but I have welcomed the opportunity to work with Sue and experience treatments at Glow and Image when I regularly return home to Ipswich. There is often a perception that to get the best you have to travel into London and visit Harley Street, but this is not the case. Sue has made London treatments accessible to everyone in Suffolk, and with her split payment options and regular special offers, it certainly helps making looking and feeling good more affordable. ■

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by the team at Image

HOW CAN I DISGUISE THE BAGS UNDER MY EYES?

The under eye bag is possibly the most irritating beauty concern of all time! To effectively cover dark circles, it’s important that you choose the right tone of concealer for your skin. Always go one shade lighter than your skin and use the LEAST amount of product possible. To get the best coverage, use a small brush to apply under-eye concealer. Then, using your ring finger to finish, press lightly into the skin until it’s fully blended. You can also apply a small amount of setting powder to your under eye to ensure that the concealer stays put. As with the concealer itself, go easy on the product to avoid creasing. Top Tip:Try sleeping with your head slightly raised and don’t forget, chilled cucumber slices are very soothing for the eye area and excellent for reducing puffiness. HOW DOES STRESS IMPACT YOUR SKIN?

The hormone cortisol is triggered by stress. Cortisol is the ‘fight or flight’ hormone and it also causes your body to make more oil which then makes your skin greasy and can cause spots and acne-breakouts.Stress can also cause other skin conditions such as eczema

44

or rosacea, so if you want to take care of your skin, you need to take care of yourself as well. Try and identify the reasons behind your stress so that you can take action to remove the cause and relieve stress symptoms. Why not make a conscious effort this year to look after yourself, breathe and be kind to your mind and body? And maybe book a stressrelieving facial or massage? I’VE HIT THIRTY AND FEEL AS THOUGH I’VE GOT WRINKLES OVERNIGHT! WHAT CAN I DO?

As we get older, our skin can start to look and behave very differently. From the age of about 29, the rate of collagen and elastin renewal slows down considerably. Pregnant or perimenopausal women may also notice significant changes in their skin due to fluctuations in hormones. This can cause the onset of acne or rosacea, even in those who have never previously suffered with their skin. For most people, external factors are most significant in the extrinsic ageing of the skin. These include smoking and in particular, UV exposure. These influences affect the dermis in particular and result in changes in the chemical structure of collagen and elastin. These changes make the skin look dull, less plump and fine lines may start appearing. So start using products that have peptides and vitamin A C and E in their ingredients and stay out of the sun if aging is a concern – enjoy your holiday, but protect your skin with sun screen. n Vanilla March/April 2020

WELLBEING

Mobile massage for a stronger body and mind

W

E ALL KNOW that stress is one of the biggest threats to our mental and physical wellbeing. All of us need to relax more, but struggle to find the time in our busy lives. So how does a wonderful relaxing massage in your own home or office sound? A new mobile massage service called Lana’s Therapy has sprung up in Ipswich and is proving hugely successful with clients in both offices and homes – bringing vital stress relief wherever it is needed. Owner Julia Fjodorova started the business last year and she believes that her ability to go to homes and offices is a unique factor. “People are so much more comfortable having a massage in their own home, in familiar surroundings. Afterward they can stay where they are and keep warm, rather than having to get dressed and go out again. “More and more office workers are also finding that my mobile massage service gives them wonderful relaxation and tension relief at their desks. I have worked with both BT and Sygma Care in

46

Ipswich, offering a great 10-15 session that focuses on the upper back, neck and scalp, the areas where they feel it most. They all say they feel better immediately, in just one session, and they can’t wait for their next appointment.” Julia, originally from Russia, is fully qualified in Swedish and Deep Tissue massage, but is training to add more skills to her portfolio. “I am hoping to offer Hot Stone treatments, Indian Head massage, reflexology and many other treatments that are so helpful to the body and mind. I often combine both Deep Tissue and Swedish massage for the best overall effect. Deep Tissue is more intense, focussing on sporting strains in the shoulders, arms and legs, and then Swedish is all about relaxation and is very helpful for improving sleep, the skin and overall wellbeing. I hope to be able to offer more focused sports injury massage in the future.”

J

ULIA’S PASSION is very much physiology and the human anatomy. She spent six years competing in Muay Thai boxing and classic

boxing, but she often massaged friends and family and always enjoyed it. “One day my partner’s grandmother, who worked all her life in a hospital and was familair with anatomy, came to stay and she had a bad shoulder. I gave her a massage and she felt so much better and said I had a real talent for it. So I went on to

WELLBEING BEAUTY

NOURISH YOUR BODY & MIND

WHAT IS VINYASA? BY BILYANA DAWSON at VIDA HAUS

W

e often see the word Vinyasa next to a yoga class descriptions, but what does it actually mean? The full term is Vinyasa Krama, often shortened to Vinyasa and referred to a yoga practice of flowing sequenced asanas (postures) linked by breath and intention. From Sanskrit, vi = order + nyasa = placement and Krama means “the uninterrupted sequence of events from beginning to end” or otherwise a process – changes occurring from one moment to another. Together the Vinyasa Krama practice is one of undertaking a succession of changes uninterrupted by fluctuation, guided by one single intention. Orderly placing oneself in particular way – vinyasa is the thread that sews the events together in a succession of changes, just like the string in a pearl necklace. Every movement from asana to asana (posture) is co-ordinated with an inhale and

48

an exhale and the underlying intention is driving the movement forward. These are some guidelines to vinyasa practice: l The inhale and exhale should be of equal duration without retention or pause. Ujjai breath or otherwise known as the ocean sound breath makes the breath audible and easier to regulate. It naturally warms the muscles and the whole body from the inside out while at the same time trains the attention or in other words promotes conscious awareness. l Movement just like breath should be uninterrupted, nonstatic and not secluded. It should be coordinated with the equal breathing in and out. This may mean that a simpler movement might need to be slowed down and a more complicated one to be performed faster in order to co-ordinate the duration of the in or out breath with the completion of the given movement.

l Mula Bandha should be applied

throughout the practice – this is also known as the Root lock, located at the base of the spine at the Muladhara chakra (The Root Chakra). l Drishti or gaze – these are learned overtime. Take note not to strain while you practice them. l Intention – an aim that guides an action. “…what you are thinking about when you perform an action will determine the result of that action. You become what you contemplate…” The intention links the postures to the consciousness instead of the unconsciousness. l Knowledge passed onto Billy (@ayanayogaeast) by her wonderful teacher Tina Pashumati James who will be visiting Vida Haus all the way from Canada on 24th, 25th, 26th April 2020 to lead 3 x 3 hour workshops. A timetable is available to view on the website www.vida.haus Vanilla March/April 2020

THE

POSITIVE MINDSET

COACH

Katrina Love on Life & Living

The never-ending story

A

re you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin. I want to talk to you about stories. Not any story though – the stories that we tell ourselves, those that will shape our lives and ultimately the person we become. We become our own narratives. Henry Ford once said: “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” I love this quotation and I think he was spot on. Why? Because as humans, whatever we believe, we will ‘evidence base’ all day long – that’s how the mind works. In other words, we will find ways to back up whatever we believe about ourselves or others. So this is both good and bad news, right? Unfortunately, as humans we tend to see the negative first. This is how our brains are wired; it’s to protect us. For example, we hold our hand over a flame and we burn our hand. So our brain says, ‘Don’t do that again! It hurts!” So that we avoid pain and danger.

However, it gets more confusing for our brain if there is some sort of trauma, a heartbreak or other loss. It is not easy for our brain to ‘couple’ itself with one thing that caused us pain, because we may have experienced more than one trauma or even a series of traumatic events. In situations like these, our personal story begins to tell us that the world is not safe, or that we’re not good enough, or that we are unlovable. It becomes a story based around fear, which we will in turn find evidence to base this fear upon.

S

o here’s the thing; change the story, change your life. What we need to do is become aware of the stories we are telling ourselves and put a positive slant on them. Instead we need to tell ourselves that, yes, something difficult may have happened to us, but we survived it. Instead of it being a story of sadness where we were the victim, we can view ourselves as strong, resilient and resourceful because we survived it. We no longer have to be fearful that we weren’t good enough because here we are! So let’s change our story to one of success and happiness. We can do that by looking at all the good things we already have in our lives. We can change our story to one of success by telling ourselves "I am lucky" or "I am a winner". Look at everything you have in your life today and then start to put together the evidence that shows all the good that there is. If you are going to tell a story of your life, choose to make it a great one!

NEW BUSINESS

Leaping into business... The Norfolk Hare

Cornish handmade ceramic jug £29 bowl £31

Mini moose head £19.50

The Norfolk Hare owners, Stuart and Tamsin

RETAIL NEWS seems to be all gloomy at the moment, so it is a real joy when we hear about a new retail business starting up and particularly a local one! We caught up with Tam and Stuart, proud owners of The Norfolk Hare, to find out just what their story is – and more importantly what we can buy from their shop. TELL US, HOW DID THE NORFOLK HARE BEGIN?

Well, it technically began on the 5.47am train from Diss to London

54

Liverpool Street!! We met on the train nearly five years ago now, and quickly realised that we shared a love for beautiful things (and for dogs). My mum was an inspiration for us too as she was mad about hares and always wanted to set up a shop selling lovely things; very sadly she passed away before that happened. Stuart and I have both commuted for the last few years which has given us many hours to plan how to launch our business.

We finally took the plunge just before this Christmas and it has been quite a journey since!! AND WHAT TYPE OF PRODUCTS DO YOU SELL?

We specialise in British-made, local, artisan and international ethically sourced homewares, gifts and artworks. We particularly like sourcing unusual or slightly quirky items like our wall art animal heads, or bespoke, individually made pieces like our Cornish Sand and Sea ceramics.

Part of the joy for us in setting this business up has been in sourcing the products, talking to the producers and artists and hearing the stories behind some of the objects. We only buy things that we really love ourselves – this might be limiting I suppose but we want to truly believe in the quality and origin of what we sell. SO WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

At the moment we are an online business that is based in Diss. We are both huge fans of East Anglia,

having lived here for most of our lives and with both our families connected to the region. Our goal is to buck the current trend and open an actual shop as soon as we can. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ITEM YOU ARE CURRENTLY SELLING?

That’s a difficult one!! I really love the quirky wire sculpted animal heads and our handmade ceramics. For Stuart, probably the artist-designed lamps and lighthouse prints.

HOMES With new year well and truly over, it is the time of year to spring clean or, better still, bring new vibrancy and vigour to your home with a redecoration project.

2020 will see a shift away from hard, graphic interiors to a softer, more natural feel, meaning that blue really is the new grey! We instinctively gravitate towards colours that connect us with nature. As a consequence the sky and sea evoke feelings of escapism, relaxation and reflection. Key colours this season will be teals and inky blues paired with softer, neutral tones. American colour company Pantone has chosen “universal favourite” Classic Blue, or Pantone 19-4052, as its colour of the year for 2020. Classic Blue is “a boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky" while also being a colour that challenges us to "think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication”.

ENCAUSTIC TILES Encaustic tiles might have been around since the nineteenth century, but they’re coming back in a big way and are currently taking the hottest homes by storm. As the patterns of original encaustic tiles are inlaid in the tiles themselves – rather than painted on – the design stays intact even when the tiles get worn down, making them particularly great for high-traffic areas. The appeal of handmade encaustic tiles are how individual each and every tile is, the thickness and pigment shadings can vary from tile to tile, which enhances the uniqueness. When it comes to grouting, Just Tiles at Martlesham recommends that you avoid dark grouts (like black or grey) to prevent staining in paler areas of some patterns. THE SLEEP LAB

How to ensure your best night's sleep for years by Glasswells

T

HERE’S NOTHING MORE important than a good night’s sleep – something we can promise you’ll get with the huge selection of beds at Glasswells. From fold out sofa beds, to children’s bunks, bed frames, mattresses and luxury divan sets, our sleep experts will help you find the perfect fit.

FIVE REASONS WHY A BIGGER BED IS BETTER

Do you wake up still tired? This could be down to not enough space in your bed! A larger bed shouldn’t be seen as a luxury, but a necessity.

1

You spend a THIRD of your life in bed

This means that by the time you are 60 you’ll have spent around 20 years in bed! This is a huge amount of time, so it’s essential that the bed you are in provides a quality night’s sleep. Glasswells sleep experts can help to ensure your new bed is perfectly suited to you, and your partner if you are sharing; not only will this improve sleep quality, but it will also mean your bed and mattress will last you longer.

2

16 other countries can’t be wrong!

This is how many countries have – on average – larger bed sizes than we do in the UK. Many

other European countries sleep in spacious 160cm by 200cm beds, whereas Brits traditionally buy a double (135cm by 190cm). Pop into your local Glasswells to test out the different sizes, once you’ve slept in a king size bed or bigger, you’ll never want to go back.

3

There’s no easy way to say this, but you may not be as slim as you once were…

As we get older, unfortunately, our bodies change. Did you know that a double bed gives each sleeper just 65cm (2’3”) of sleeping space – this is less than a baby’s cot! A king size bed comes in at 150cm wide (that’s 75cm of space each) and a super king is 180cm, which is the equivalent of two single beds put together.

4

People move 60-70 times per night

Once the honeymoon period is over, you really should try to put as much space between yourself and your partner as possible! This will reduce the chance of your sleep being disturbed and should mean you wake up refreshed and ready for the day ahead. Who said romance was dead!

5

It doesn’t actually cost much more

You may think that going up a size or two would be a lot more expensive, but it really isn’t. Each

£100 you spend on a new bed works out as just 3.9p per day over 7 years, a small investment for something so important for aiding your general health and wellbeing. Glasswells often run promotions where you can buy a king size bed for the price of a double bed, making those allimportant extra inches even more affordable. We all spend as much as we can afford on the best possible home, holiday, car and mobile phone, and the same should be said for our beds – it’s our haven, the place we recharge and refresh our bodies and minds. So, if your bed is over seven years old, or not providing the great level of sleep that you deserve, visit Glasswells and let their sleep experts guide the way to a perfect night’s sleep. ● Over 70 beds to try before you buy ● All the trusted brand names ● Quick delivery on all stocked models ● Price match promise ● Full range of prices, from spare beds to master bedroom luxury Glasswells, Glasswells Retail Park, Ranelagh Rd, Ipswich t: 01473 253164 www.glasswells.co.uk

K BAR & GRILL

T

HESE ARE exciting times for K Bar & Grill. The St Nicholas Street stalwart has been a favoured haunt in Ipswich for over a decade, nestled alongside the independent stores and boutiques on the way to the Waterfront. It’s in an ancient old

66

building, all beams and brickwork, bang up to this century style with funky furniture, sleek bars and stylish staff. It’s a hip bar by night, craft beers and classic cocktails, and cool bistro by day, with a pretty courtyard garden and a maze of dining space inside. Now big changes are underway as K Bar aims high with the hire of rising star chef Louis Andrews, and the ambition to put K Bar firmly on the good food map. The utterly charming young Louis cut his teeth cooking in some of East Anglia’s finest eateries, elevating Harry’s Bar in Thorpe into the top 10 best restaurants in Essex, and then spent a spell in London, including

the kitchen of chef god Tom Kerridge. He’s been lured back to the East Coast by the chance to take K Bar to the next level and bring his own unique twist to modern British cooking in a relaxed town centre setting. This Spring will see a revamp of the restaurant space and an overhaul of the menu. Andrews has already brought in a fresh approach to the kitchen and with the finest local ingredients, is transforming the menu. His aim is not to produce the same-old everyday – but lots of specials and themed nights. A midweek Moules night was the first of these inventions to pack out the place, with five variations on the theme Vanilla March/April 2020

WIN! – from the classic marinere to an inventive Thai green version, plus perfectly fried frites, fresh bread and a pint or glass of wine for just £18.

A

NDREWS’ skill is evident in every detail, even in the starters. Tiny piles of the crispest whitebait are served alongside a chargrilled lime. The heavenly halloumi chips are thick, soft and salty in perfect measure. Classic dishes are really well done. There are platters to share – antipasti with mixed cured meats, mozzarella, olives, rocket, taramasalata, breads and balsamic oil, or a fish platter with Adnams battered cod, tempura prawns, squid rings, alongside lemon, dips and bread. The new menu will undoubtedly pay homage to firm favourites like the K Bar’s hallmark K burger, which continues to win fans – a double beef patty, bacon, bacon jam, American cheese piled high on a toast brioche bun – and in keeping with modern tastes, there’s now a vegan version too. Desserts are as delicious, the house chocolate brownie with salted caramel sauce and cream, was thick and sumptuous, while other choices include mixed berry Eton mess, a daily cheesecake, or oven-baked triple chocolate chip cookie dough. K Bar is on the cusp of a big change this Spring and Louis Andrews’ new style of cooking looks set to place it as one of the East’s most enjoyable eating destinations.

Angelle Joseph DJ, music producer and musician

My East Coast Life

DJ, music producer and musician Angelle Joseph came to Suffolk in 2011 to study at the University of Suffolk, and stayed in the area. She has worked with some of the biggest names in the music business, including Ed Sheeran and Tom Robinson, and has broadcast live from Latitude.

Have you always been into music? I was always interested in music, but I studied Psychology and Criminology at uni, which was a world away from what I’m dong now. My parents kept saying I needed a backup as the music ‘thing’ wasn’t really a job! How did the change to a music career come about? In my teens I attended a local youth club every day after school. There, I found my love

for music and we did workshops and programmes making music, running a radio and basic skills in the studio. All the friends I hung out with there are still doing music or have some sort of creative outlet. I used to rap with the boys, always trying to think of new ways to expand my musicality and be unique. What led you to becoming a DJ and musician? When I graduated I started a hip hop radio show, Beats, Rhymes and Grime at IO Radio, which invited rappers to come in and promote their music. I got really into it, which inspired me to start rapping again, as there were no women who were rapping. I heard of BBC Music Introducing and, after I contacted them, I was asked to come and have

a look around. It was amazing, seeing the different worlds of community and local radio, but also seeing how passionate the presenters were. I started sending my music to the show and then they interviewed me about my music… and then they asked me to present the show! What have been your career highlights so far? There are so many, everything is just so new and exciting! Broadcasting live from Latitude, hosting the panel at Ipswich Sound City Festival with grime artist, Novelist. Attending BBC Introducing live, hosting sessions there and being part of Tom Robinson’s Live radio show broadcast on BBC 6 music, and all local radio. Taking a band to record a live session at legendary Maida Vale Studios. Choosing three bands to support Ed Sheeran for his homecoming tour and watching them. I was so proud! What are your dreams for the future? I hope to continue giving a voice to emerging, unsigned artists that I believe are so good they should be heard everywhere! I want them to know anything is possible, so keep believing and keep sending them in! It would be nice to be part of shows at the bigger stations like Radio 1, 1xtra and 6Music! ■
