CLIP ’N CLIMB

T

he biggest Clip ’n Climb in the world has recently opened on Ransomes Europark in Ipswich, and is the first purpose-built facility of its kind in the UK. Incredibly, it is an independent, family-run business which was launched by Ipswich residents Mark Patterson and Josh Davey in July. Mark and Josh first started working on the project three years ago. Their vision was to create an entertainment hub for all ages to get active, socialise and have fun! Clip ’n Climb Ipswich is a fully inclusive activity for everyone to enjoy. Participation in climbing is increasing on average by 20% every year, and for the first time forming part of the Olympics in 2020.

12

Clip ‘n Climb is an indoor climbing experience like no other with over 250 centres worldwide. The brand has transformed the climbing industry by delivering exhilarating activities in a safe and vibrant environment. Knowledge or experience of climbing isn’t required. Staff take you through a safety brief to show you how to use the state-of-art automatic belay technology, followed by an hour in the arena to explore 42 unique challenges. Don’t forget to try the highest vertical drop slide and leap of faith in Europe! This November, the centre will boast a three storey soft play to compliment the popular Paddy & Scott’s café – the ideal venue for coffee and catching up with friends.

Apparently we are heading for a chilly chilly winter. According to the news desperate media. Well I am thrilled with that as I have invested in some super snug, super soft, extra warm scarves, hats, ponchos, gloves and socks. I’m ready so bring it on! As ever Cake and Catwalk will have a stunning collection of everything a girl could want either to treat yourself or buy as a gift. And nothing is horribly expensive. We also have Sophyline Paris clothing, Pomodoro and a new comfort collection from Sundee Tee. Lots of fabulous jewellery, small going out bags and purses. Don’t forget, we are also online and not to leave it too late as the good stuff goes quickly. I hope to see you at the Saints Christmas Street Market on Sunday 1st December. LYNN TURNER

A CUT ABOVE THE STANDARD UNIFORM

F

OR MANY years, Market Hill in Woodbridge has been the beating heart of the town, and with its cluster of independent stores, markets and tempting places to eat, it’s a hive of activity. There’s a new addition to this thriving community; award-winning globally sourced menswear and lifestyle retailer Uniform Research, which also has a store in Ipswich. They stock a fantastic range of clothing, footwear, accessories and lifestyle products. Owner Daniel Le Sauvage

40

has a very specific vision for the store, and what it can add to Woodbridge. “We're very pleased with the new store design and the brands we have on offer and to be in such a wonderful location. Market Hill is well know as the place to shop in Woodbridge and we are so pleased to be at No.1. The whole street has a wonderful and unique vibe and a great choice of independent stores. “This is a very supportive community and the demographic for us is spot on. We have a mixture of customers, some

local, some visiting and some from London that have second homes here. That sets a certain standard and expectation of quality and service. This is our forte, as we bring over 14 years of experience in the fashion industry to the town. “We are very proud that in 2012 we were awarded the Best Men’s Fashion Store in the UK, by Drapers magazine. This was a huge accolade for us and great recognition for a lot of hard work and the passion we bring to the business. Our Ipswich store, run by James Cole, has been operating since 2006. James has been with me since the beginning and he’s at the top of his game in the industry – so if you find yourself in Ipswich, why not pop over to see James at our store in Queen Street. “Our ethos at Uniform Research is all about quality, service, accessibility, passion and sourcing products from around the world that have their own, unique story whether its brand history or sustainability. The brands we choose are not always the most obvious. We champion the environmentally friendly – those that manufacture without impacting on the environment or exploiting workers. I believe it’s Vanilla November/December 2019

FASHION FASHION our responsibility to trade in this way and there are some amazing brands that share our view. “These include: Nudie jeans, which are totally organic and vegan-friendly; Novesta footwear, which are handmade in Slovakia, vegan and chemical free; and Veja trainers, which are sustainable, chemical free and made using partly recycled products. “Other brands we stock are Folk, Universal Works, Armorlux, Grenson, Redwing, Rains, Carhartt, Dickies and Edwin. Our lifestyle brands include Green Factory, which is a range of handmade terrariums from Paris, Concrete & Wax candles and holders, Newgate watches and greetings cards from Ohh Deer. We also have a great range of accessories such as sunglasses, socks and belts.”

EFORE entering the world of fashion retail, Dan worked in sales for some of the biggest names in car manufacturing. But a trip

to Boston in the US made him change track. “I was blown away by the exceptional quality of the independent retailers there, and a large part of that was fashion. I could never find the clothing I wanted back at home so I decided to set up on my own. My primary drive was to create a unique fashion shopping experience that focuses on quality and customer service.” So what age groups does Uniform Research cater for? “All ages, from a lad at college, to his father and his grandfather. We appeal across the generations. Our philosophy is simple: to globally source well-made products that are accessible no matter what your budget, from a pair of socks a t-shirt, to a pair of denims that are made in Japan. It’s all here. We have a new website launching soon... So watch this space.”

REAL LIVES

“Thanks to Barker Gotelee, I feel much more positive about my future.”

Mediation helps to secure a favourable outcome upon the husband’s death MY PROBLEM: My beloved husband, David, died suddenly around six months ago. It was a massive shock, but even more so when I found out that he hadn’t updated his Will since just after we got married and had left our home to his two children, with the remainder of his estate to be divided between the three of us. Whilst I was also to receive his pension, I simply didn’t have enough money to buy a flat, let alone a house like the one we had shared for over two decades. I was having sleepless nights about where I was going to live and how I was going to support myself in the years to come. ELIZABETH, SUFFOLK

42

HOW IT WAS SOLVED:

David and I married in the 1990s following his divorce. Since then, we’d been very happy. Although things were difficult with his two children when we first got together, he managed to smooth things over and they maintained a good relationship over the years. David made a new Will shortly after we got married. I knew he was struggling with how to ‘keep everyone happy’ in the event of his death, especially given the tensions that existed with his children regarding our relationship. He talked about leaving his children the family home (where they grew up) but also said he would make sure I was okay. I didn’t like to pry too much so soon after we were married and just assumed things would be fine. He talked about Vanilla November/December 2019

updating his Will at various times over the years, but never got round to it.

W

hen he died, it came as a huge shock to learn that, aside from his pension, I was to receive just one-third of his estate excluding the house. I’m not a greedy person, but especially as I haven’t worked for some years due to ill health, this simply wasn’t enough for me to buy a new home and support myself. Naturally, I craved solace in the home we had shared and the idea of having to leave reduced me to tears. I confided in a friend, who suggested I sought legal advice from Barker Gotelee. As soon as I met with Katie from the Private Client Team, I felt the burden lift. She explained that there is a law called the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 that exists to help people like me. In short, if your husband/ wife dies and their Will does not make reasonable provision for you, then you can apply to the Court to ask that provision be made for you from their estate. Katie and I talked in detail about my situation and she confirmed that I had a strong claim (and that we were still within the time limit to make it). After she set out my position by way of an initial letter to the children, various letters went back and forth with their solicitor. It quickly became clear that they weren’t going to back down without a fight. Katie suggested that we ask

the children’s solicitor whether they would consider mediation. They agreed and Katie arranged for a mediation to take place at Barker Gotelee’s offices. I felt awkward seeing them so we sat in separate rooms with our solicitors while a professional mediator moved between us, helping us to reach an agreement.

A

fter a long negotiation, we agreed that I should have a ‘life interest’ in the family home (i.e. I could live there, rent free, for the rest of my life) with the children to receive it on my death. We also agreed that I should receive half, rather than a third, of the

remainder of David’s estate to give me a bit more security. By choosing mediation, we were able to reach a solution that was acceptable to us all without the time, cost and emotional strain of going to Court. The children know that they will inherit bricks and mortar when the time comes, while I can stay in the house that I love, with a modest income to live out the rest of my days. David’s death has taught us how important it is to review your Will regularly and be open with your loved ones about what you intend, reducing uncertainty and the potential for disputes once a loved one has passed away. ■

MONEY MAN

KEVIN DOHERTY

W

HEN IN a period of upheaval, we all struggle to take a step back and see those events within the wider picture. It is easier if you are not emotionally involved, but events that impact our lives significantly are usually tied to us as individuals, directly impacting our sense of selves and our view of the world. Weddings, births, deaths, illnesses, friendships, failures and successes all shape us. Events which do not affect us emotionally are less likely to have the same impact. There are several issues high on the news agenda, and whatever your personal and political views, whichever papers you read or channels you watch it is likely that Extinction Rebellion, Brexit, Trump or Syria have caught your eye. Whether

environmental, political and economic or personal, there will be things which we hear about, discuss with friends and may feel powerless to change. I do not have the answers to any of the big issues of the day, but I do know that there is very rarely a perfect solution and that it is impossible to make everyone happy. Brexit will spin out to a conclusion eventually; Trump will not always be president of the USA and other stories will creep into the news agenda. Choose any decade, almost any period in time, and there are reasons to be wary and uncertain. Long term investment planning is about working with what we do know and taking methodical, calculated steps to achieving set goals. We do not know what will happen or where we will be in twenty years, but we can anticipate what we may need

and try and plan for that. It is also about recognising that we can take small steps for our own future and security to protect against larger uncertainties. Know what you need, talk about it, plan for it and then act to make it happen. ■

HOMES

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE Buying a ‘forever home’ early is more popular than ever

with property expert

SHARNIE ROGERS

T

HE WORLD of property definitely sees its fair share of trends, and one favoured trend in recent times is a farewell to the days of ‘moving up the ladder one step at a time’, as buying the ‘forever home’ early seems to be more popular than ever. But what is it about a home that makes it a longer-term investment? For most, a forever home is essentially a family home – somewhere you imagine watching your children grow up and then see yourself retire in. A place that can handle whatever life throws at you; the unexpected triplets or indeed the mother-in-law! So, what are buyers looking for? The property will need to have flexibility. It isn’t about finding the biggest house, it is finding a property that provides room to grow, evolves as your needs alter, and offers the ability to utilise

46

further space once children move out. With the market forever changing as it does, buyers also want to know that they can improve the value of their home later on, whether that be by converting outbuildings, building an extension or creating an annexe/granny flat. Another primary consideration is the location (location, location!). Are there nearby shops and amenities; is there a pub or nearby train station; what’s the local school like; is there a view; and what’s going on with local development? All questions that a discerning buyer, looking for their forever home, will likely ask. Finding a property that ticks every box can seem like an impossible task, especially when taking into account budget restraints. However, finding a home that has the potential to be ‘forever’, is achievable. Most of the properties we market are pretty special, but what makes them special will be different in every case, and will certainly vary from buyer to buyer – ‘beauty lies in the eye of the beholder’, after all. DOS AND DON’TS DO

● Consider widening your search

area: most buyers end up buying a home just outside of the area they first thought, and don’t regret it! ● Look at things that you may need

in the future; like school catchment areas. ● Investigate the future potential of the house; can it be extended, does it have a barn to convert, or is there space for 4 cars? DON’T

● Just consider the space that’s

already on offer (look beyond the existing four walls). ● Be too strict trying to tick every box… because the chances are, the house that ticks just your main points, will be less money and has the potential to tick them all with a bit of investigating. ● Rush into getting on the ladder; think about what you ‘really’ want to gain by buying a property before you start looking. ■ Sharnie Rogers, who has been with Strutt & Parker for over seven years, will be joining our successful Suffolk team as Head of Office. illa TRIED & TESTED

The new beauty spa in the heart of Woodbridge

R

&R beauty spa is the latest edition to the New Street Market collective and really compliments the other creative businesses in this cool space, just off Market Square in Woodbridge. It’s the brainchild of Sarah Gregory, who has managed an impressive line-up of salons before, including Shrubland Hall, Flawless Image and the Spa at Seckford, so Sarah knows a thing or two about what makes a beauty salon work. The spa is tucked away in the corner of a beautiful old stable buliding that New Street Market now calls home. Deceptively spacious, you walk in to a charming reception room with quaint original features and wooden floorboards which leads through to the treatment rooms that can be found on different levels, via a twisting staircase and

52

connecting landings. The decor is simple and chic – providing the perfect sanctuary away from a stressful or busy day. Top of Sarah’s check list, after finding her perfection location, was to secure a top skincare brand for the salon. She was thrilled to get the cutting-edge French skincare brand, Caudalie, making R&R the only spa in the area that offer the extensive range of treatments. Reading through the full treatment list made it hard to decide which one to try as they all sounded so tempting. If you think like us you’re probably going to have to work your way through them all one by one. The Caudalie philosophy and success is based on the power of the grape seed which contains incredibly powerful antioxidants, so names of many of the treatments have some play on vines or wines. Treatments include the Premier Cru, Vinoperfect and Crushed Cabernet Scrub, who

wouldn’t be tempted? We chose one treatment each: the Resveratol 60 minute facial (£60), an exceptional firming and anti-wrinkle treatment (more on this next issue!) and the R&R Signature Massage (£60). The unique massage experience is a winning formula of Sarah’s that she brought with her to R&R and takes all the best bits of every massage you’ve ever had. It starts with legs and feet and finishes with a facial cleanse and head massage. As for the bits inbetween, let’s just say it was pure heaven and involved hot stones at some point. And we are both now in love with the delectable Caudalie creams and oils! Sarah’s never-ending energy for a new adventure is truly amazing and we think she’s definitely on to another winner here at R&R. And when you’ve finished your treatment at the spa, what nicer way to continue to relax with a bite to eat or a shop in New Street Market! n www.refreshrevive.co.uk

PROFILE BALANCING at Dr Linea Aesthetics Ipswich clinic

A

WARD-WINNING Dr Linea Strachan DMD, owner and practitioner of Dr Linea Aesthetics is always ensuring she is up to date with the latest products, techniques and treatment within the ever-evolving facial aesthetics industry. With clinics all over East Anglia (Ipswich, Norwich, Bury St Edmunds), Dr Linea also holds a regular monthly clinic on the prestigious Harley Street in London. Profile balancing is a treatment Dr Linea has found to be in increasing demand over the last year, with more and more

54

patients seeking definition of the jaw and adding contour to the face without the use of highlighter makeup or an Instagram filter! Profile balancing creates the perfect silhouette – balancing the nose, to the lips, to the chin. This is done by subtly adding volume to the jawline and cheeks to give more of a contour, and often results in a slimmer looking face. These days, the art of taking a ‘Selfie’ has been mastered by the vast majority of people, but when a photograph is taken by others, we often feel unhappy about our appearance and our profile and

class it as a ‘bad photograph’. Commonly, patients seeking rhinoplasty or a lip augmentation, may not be aware their chin maybe more of the root of their unbalanced face. A retracted chin can make the nose appear longer, and an undefined jaw can make the face look larger. By adding hyaluronic acidbased dermal filler to the chin, Dr Linea is able to project the chin forward which defines the jawline, helping to shape the face and balance the profile. By correcting the ratio between the nose and the lips, and then the lips to the chin, you can re-harmonise one’s profile. This is very much an individualised treatment and the amount of filler that would be

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...Pre-party Christmas tips from the team at Image

WHY DO I NEED TWO APPOINTMENTS FOR MICROBLADING?

This is to make sure they are perfect! You'll need to have two appointments because during the healing stage some people retain pigment better than others and your brows will need a touch up to replace any irregularities that may have appeared in the meantime. Don't think of it as an optional apointment, think of it as the second part of the complete treatment. Top tip: Do your research on your brow technician and make sure you choose someone reputable, with lots of experience and is able to show you before and after pictures of their work. HOW DO I PREVENT LIPSTICK FROM BLEEDING?

Feathering and bleeding is most likely happen when the lips are dry, so keep those luscious lips moisturised! A lip primer will provide a smooth canvas. Then line your lips with a similar colour to your chosen lipstick this will prevent the colour from bleeding. Use a longer wearing lipstick as it will not wear off as quick. Don’t forget to pop a piece of tissue between your lips and blot of any excess! Top tip: Gently exfoliate your lips every week.

58

WHAT IS BROW LAMINATION?

The new instagram trend! Brow Lamination (also known as Fluffy Brow) is a straightening treatment that compares to a lash lift. Using a similar technique, the treatment involves straightening your individual brow hairs in an upward direction to create a fuller brow. The treatment usually lasts around an hour and once the treatment is done the therapist will give you a wax and tint to create that perfect clean shape. Read our report on page 60. Top tip: Have lash lift at the same time you will feel a million dollars! I LOVE HAVING MY NAILS DONE HOWEVER MY NAILS ALWAYS SEEM TO BREAK WHEN HAVING GEL REMOVED?

The dreaded break! This is normally caused during the ‘soaking off’ process. The therapist will use acetone to remove the gel polish and this can, depending on the person, dry out your nails. To save any breakage happening apply OPI Gel Break onto your nails after having them soaked off and this will help protect them from future damage. Tell your therapist that you need this treatment next time you have your nails soaked off and I guarantee you’ll see a difference. Top tip: If soaking off gels at home, make sure the saturated cotton wool is only touching the gel and not wrapped round your whole finger as the acetone will dry out any area it touches. n

Let’s talk...

PARTY HAIR

Party season is upon us! Between hectic schedules, festive soirées and prepping for Christmas, your hair can end up being forgotten about. We spoke to Terri at John Olivers about how to elevate your outfit with some elegant hairstyles.

EFFORTLESS WAVES

By adding a pearl accessory, this simple style can see you through way beyond Summer. Start by spritzing KMS Hair Play Sea Salt Spray (£18.00) on to towel-dried hair and blow dry. Once dried, create some loose curls with the new ghd Oracle (£175), an exclusive Styler only available to purchase in the salon. Run your fingers through to loosen the curls. Part hair on one side, tuck behind your ear and apply an accessory like a pearl hair slide.

LOW UNDONE BUN

This uber chic style looks like you’ve taken more than a couple of minutes to achieve. First gather your hair into a low pony tail and fix using an Invisibobble hair ring (£4.65). Twist this pony into a bun and secure with pins. Spray Goldwell Creative Texture Dry Texture Spray (£14.50) on to the bun and loosen with your fingers to create a loose, undone bun.

READER OFFER

£5 OFF a Hair-Up or Blowdry To celebrate the party season, John Olivers are offering Vanilla readers an exclusive £5 OFF a Hair-up or Blow Dry service valid with selected stylists at The Lock, Woodbridge and Great Colman Street salons. BROW LAMINATION

TR ED TEST The newest brow treatment now available at Image Salon

B

etween microblading, tweezing, tinting and threading, there’s a million different ways we can groom our eyebrows (with varying levels of pain) in the quest for the ultimate Instagram-worthy arches. Now, there’s a new kid on the block claiming to give you your biggest, bushiest eyebrows yet. We’re talking about Brow Lamination...

BEFORE

Brow lamination is a process of restructuring the brow hairs to keep them in a desired shape. It’s the perfect treatment for anyone whose hairs are irregular in direction, have any gaps in between said hairs, or who want that groomed, brushed-up look. That feathery effect we lust after is often put down to a brilliantly hard-wearing brow gel and, while they do exist, they can be hit and miss (plus they work differently on different eyebrows).

AFTER

THE TREATMENT

Lamination involves two different treatment solutions that do for our brows what a lash lift does for our lashes. The first is brushed through eyebrow hairs to make them softer and more malleable, and is left on for twenty minutes. Next, the brows are brushed into the desired position and a ‘laminating’ solution is applied, to keep the strands in place. A natural-looking tint is applied (the shade depends on what colour your eyebrows are), followed by waxing to tidy up

60

well on brows as lashes. Then just brush, brush, brush. WHO IS IT GOOD FOR?

Those who have an abundance of brow hairs will reap the benefits of lamination as it can fix thick hairs in place, with a hold that no product could previously deliver. But those with finer brows can benefit too as it helps give the appearance of slightly fuller brows and the hairs that are there can be styled to cover any sparse areas. Brow lamination helps to add colour and definition to brows without any after-effects that take time to heal. DOUBLE WITH A LASH LIFT!

Do what I did and have the lash lift at the same time – in just over an hour your eyes and brows will have had a total makeover. ▲ Pictures show the results of a Especially good as a party season double treatment of Brow Lamination treatment as eyes will sparkle and Lash Lift. The slight redness was and the brows will be on point! a result of the waxing and soon disappeared.

the shape. Finally, a nourishing serum is applied. The whole process takes just under an hour, costs £35, and should last for around two months. HOW SHOULD I LOOK AFTER MY LAMINATED BROWS?

The lamination process can be a little drying, so apply a small amount of oil to your eyebrows everyday. Even better invest in a Jane Iredale PureLash conditioner (£16) works just as

Christmas Survival Guide

H

ooray! We’ve almost made it – the run up to Christmas and the count down for a hopeful New Year... I have just read a survey that quotes stress levels go up by 62% during this holiday period and, although surprising, it is easy to see why. So how do we survive Christmas – good question? Here’s a few ideas... PLAN: This is pretty easy. Make a list (and yes, I am a list lover!) of presents, meals, decorations, invitations and so on. It is always much easier with your own written instructions to follow. START EARLY: You already have your list, what are you waiting for? The earlier you begin doing stuff the more chilled Christmas can be. Leaving things to the last minute is extremely stressful and we get angry with ourselves (again). Be kind to yourself. AVOID TOO MANY COMMITMENTS: I know

– there may be large blanks in your social calendar most of the year but now it looks like you are the most popular person in the world! But only go to events if YOU actually want to. They are just invitations.

LEARN TO SAY ‘NO’ INSTANTLY: (No guilt required)

This is better than letting people down last minute. PUT BOUNDARIES IN PLACE: Yes, I know they are your family, but if you don’t get on with them it can get toxic. Many of us feel torn between this selfenforced loyalty and our own mental health so... put your boundaries in place – allocate specific times and stick to them. DON’T OVER EAT: Apparently it’s not compulsory – I just googled it. Eat what you love but not all the time over the entire holiday period. Be aware of mind manipulations from food sellers or manufacturers – do you actually like vol-au-vents or the plethora of party snacks? Obviously pigs in blankets are a game changer so we won’t go there. STAY HEALTHY: Take the time to exercise, run or

walk. Now of all times it’s great to hook up to those free endorphins for so many reasons. Self-care being one, as well as more energy, stress relief, burning calories, building up an appetite and also a great excuse to get out of general household chores and family spats. HAVE ADVENTURES: They don’t have to be huge.

Try different foods(maybe not the vol-au-vents), go to that Christmas market or the switching on of twinkling lights somewhere. TIME FOR YOU: Madness I know to suggest this one but it’s about your flow time. What do you want to do to relax and have fun? You are entitled to this too. ENJOY THE MOMENT: Slow it down, be mindful

and watch for those flashes of joy... collect them throughout the day. These are what happy memories are made of and which lead us to feel hopeful for the future. n

NOURISH YOUR BODY & MIND

GOOD POSTURE BY FAYE MEAKIN at VIDA HAUS

“No slouching!” my Mother would whisper over the dinner table and dramatically straighten her back in attempt for me to mimic her. Combine that with dance training, and yes I have good posture, thanks Mum. We all know the importance of correct posture but do we realise how beneficial healthy postural habits can be. A recent study in California showed men and women were attracted to people with better posture describing the characteristics it portrays as ‘openness’, ‘confidence’ and ‘social dominance’. More importantly than being aesthetically pleasing, correct posture is an abundantly healthy practice. It is found to: ● Prevent muscle fatigue ● Correctly aligns your muscles so your body works efficiently, giving you more energy! ● Minimises joint stress ● Prevent backache, neckache and muscular pain ● Improve digestion ● Enhance self-esteem! So how do we right our wrongs and improve how we stand?

● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Think tall and proud to lengthen your spine Earlobes should be in line with middle of shoulders Keep shoulders back, knees straight and back straight Your weight should be evenly placed between the centre of both feet Feet should be your hips width distance apart Ensure your feet arches are in a neutral position (not flat) Avoid locking your knees Gently engage your core by imagining your tummy button hugging your inner spine

Changing your postural habits may cause muscle fatigue for the first few days, so be aware of this and persevere! Dancing, Pilates and Yoga will also give you many more tools to improve your posture. Our timetable is available to view on our website www.vida.haus

Christmas Carpet Survival Guide by carpet saviour, Darrell Smith at Archway Carpets HOT EMBERS AND ASH

Cool ashes are best picked out with the vacuum cleaner. We always suggest a suction cleaner, especially on wool carpets. GLASS OF RED WINE Firstly, do not panic, all is not ruined. All you need is warm water in a spray bottle and a roll of plain white kitchen roll. Blot as much of the red wine up as you can, use fresh sheets of kitchen roll, this will pull the liquid from the pile. Spray the warm water on the effected area. Continue to blot until the

68

wine is mopped out – with red wine it is important to do this as quickly as possible. Remember this may not remove the stain entirely, if this is the case please do not use chemical cleaners. SOLID MESS you’ll need an old spatula, kitchen roll and warm water in a spray bottle. Scrape up as much of the solid as possible, then use the warm water and spray and blot. Continue this until the area is clean. For any remaining stains always get the effected area spot-cleaned by a professional. www@archwaycarpets.co.uk

he weather has definitely turned, and with it we come to think about winter warming reds; whites with depth and flavour that will go with game or winter warming stews; fizz for those parties that make the winter months seem cosy, filled with laughter, friends and maybe even an after dinner liqueur. Potentially what we will be drinking in the months to come and at Christmas… I shall start with Champagne or rather an amazing alternative that is still very underappreciated – Cremant de Loire, made by the traditional method – similar to Champagne but half the price as it’s not produced in the Champagne region! Then a winter warming red that is smooth and structured that warms the cockles. We recommend a Saumur Cabernet Franc, which has spent two years aging in oak, softening tannins and giving it a delicious, well rounded structure. For a white, I would recommend an unusual grape – known by our team as the ‘Dinosaur Wine’ (a little in-joke) – Treixadura from North West Spain, with an aromatic intensity and a palate of dried apricots and fennel... perfect with goose! Then to finish I would have a liqueur – a brand new product we have in stock – The Nog from The English Whisky company, which is a unique blend of Whisky and Cream. Just mmm... delicious!

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against a well cooked jacket potato but that’s not what we’re about. We find the freshest ingredients from local suppliers then craft them into dishes which are simply unforgettable. We put passion into every plate.” And the proof of the pudding, or in this case the game pie or fish brioche (a dish you won’t find anywhere else in East Anglia) is in the eating. The game pie has some of the softest, tastiest meat you can imagine with a gravy that is created from the meat bones and allowed to mature over many hours. The fish brioche is essentially a fish pie but in a hollowed out bread roll (from a local award-winning bakery) which is then baked to allow it to encapsulate the divine fish sauce and locally landed fish. Owner, Peter Gwizdala, says, “The first year has been immensely rewarding and enjoyable. Some guests have taken a bit of persuading to share the dishes but this is what our extensive menu was created for – social eating. The idea is that you take your time, share the wonderful food and talk to each other.” November/December 2019 Vanilla

A visit to Arlingtons is an absolute delight. The menu is extensive with over 24 small plate dishes which have been designed to be shared between two or three people. Also, vegetarians and vegans, rather than being an afterthought are clearly a central part of Arlingtons planning. With 50% of the menu being vegetarian and 40% vegan and 50% gluten free, there is something for everyone. Peter elaborates, “We put passion into everything we do. We wanted vegetarian food that everyone can enjoy – for instance our delicious Moroccan vegetable and chickpea tagine has such intense flavours that meat-eaters have commented that they haven’t noticed the lack of meat.” There is also a well-thought out à la carte menu featuring classics such as pan-fried liver and bacon with

curly kale and red onion jus, which is just heavenly. Also, with shellfish back on the menu after the summer break, a visit to Arlingtons is a must just to sample the curried coconut and chickpea mussels. It’s heaven in a dish. Housed in a unique building in Ipswich, formerly the town's museum (and with a staircase dating back to 1550 said to have been walked upon by Queen Elizabeth 1), this iconic building holds a special place in the hearts of all Ipswichians. The building was also the site of a protest by the Suffragette movement in 1911 to avoid being put on the census. Commenting Peter Gwizdala said, “We adore this building and its huge historical significance and we’re just here to pass this on to the next generation... so every glass of wine and meal bought helps to protect this legacy for the future.” n www.arlingtons-ipswich.co.uk

The Freston Boot However, The Freston Boot has many other strings to their bow. The old stables have been transformed into a stunning bespoke cinema catering for children’s parties, film screenings and a perfect presentation space for local business. There is also the magical roundish house nestled next to the Freston woods, which is available for private hire and can cater for a mixture of events and shindigs. In the summer months weddings are a permanent fixture in the wedding paddock. Damon Jeffery, one of the owners of the Boot, states, “The Boot is truly one of the most amazing places you could hold your wedding. We cater for you and will create a wedding designed around the bride and groom’s requirements – whether that’s a street food festival with

live bands playing throughout the day or traditional five course menu followed by a string quartet. Once the tipis are up, the paddock is transformed into a wedding space like no other.” With the Christmas season just around the corner the Boot is ready to get festive. From carol singers, mulled spiced cider and a mouth-watering locally sourced festive menu offering seared pigeon breast, venison and chestnut pie and of course Suffolk turkey with all the trimmings... to name but a few. The Boot truly is a pub like no other. n

Heather Carr owner, Zeebra Chic boutique

My East Coast Life things until I’m ready to return. What are your hidden gems in and around Ipswich? For food and a great night out, my partner and I love to go to Milsoms Kesgrave Hall, it’s a really special treat. The Newbourne Fox does a fabulous Sunday roast. I love checking out independant boutiques but I also love my own clothing which you will often see me modelling!

Heather Carr owns and runs Zeebra Chic in Ipswich, a boutique that sells a unique range of natural clothing, jewellery, gifts and homewares.

What makes Zeebra Chic special? We strive to be different in everything we stock, whether it’s clothes, gifts or jewellery, and our brands are exclusive to us on the high street. We are well established for our clothing, and as much as possible they are made using only natural fibres such as cotton, linen and wool. Which of your brands are you most proud of? Marble, which is a very Italianlook brand, is chic, comfortable, flattering and easy to wear. Then we have Chalk, which is suitable for any age, and they do lovely t-shirts, dungarees and jumpers. Capri is a very different look, with

beautiful dresses and tunics in gorgeous textures and patterns. Our Italian Fashion range is onesize fits all, with trousers, skirts; great style, all made in Italy. Who shops at Zeebra Chic? There is something here for everyone, of any age group. I source clothing and gifts that everyone will love. Some of our clothes are high end, but others, like Italian Fashion, are accessible for every pocket. You have recently had your first child, how are you going to balance motherhood with the shop? Mable is a wonderful gift and she’s such a good baby. I’m taking five months maternity leave, and so lucky that I have a wonderful team behind me, including my mother, who are running the business day to day. I will of course keep an eye on

What have you got going on over Christmas? It’s going to be a busy season for us. We are known for our stunning festive window displays, and they always bring people into the shop. We’ll have some gorgeous Christmas stock, like cashmere scarves, leather purses and handbags, jewellery, and lovely St Eval candles and we’ll be open on Thursdays for late night shopping in December. At the Winter Fashion Show at the Library on 14 November, we’ll be showcasing our autumn/ winter styles. To celebrate our 5th birthday we are holding an All-Day Shopping Event with fizz and nibbles on 22 November. I will be there with Mable to say hello! That evening, we are teaming up with The Green Room Café, who are doing a chocolate, cheese and wine event afterwards. It’s going to be a fantastic Christmas! ■ Zeebra Chic, 14 Dial Lane, Ipswich t: 01473 570191
