THEATRE

When you stand together, ordinary people can do extraordinary things! Norfolk & Norwich Operatic Society brings MADE IN DAGENHAM to Norwich Theatre Royal

I

nspired by a true story, Made in Dagenham is a new British musical which opened at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End in 2014, and has never before been performed at Norwich Theatre Royal.

10

Based on the 2010 film which received four BAFTA nominations including outstanding British film, the show takes us back to 1968 when the Ford sewing machinists walked out in protest against sexual discrimination, demanding

equal pay which led to the 1970 Equal Pay Act. Made in Dagenham is a rollercoaster of a musical and has been compared to Billy Elliott in terms of its emotional content and the effect on family

life when a strong cause is fought against the social and political background of its time. With an inspirational story and a fabulous score, this is an uplifting musical comedy about friendship, love and the importance of fighting for what is right. Funny, touching and timeless, Made in Dagenham shows how ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they stand together. With a full orchestra and fabulous cast this talented company returns to the Theatre Royal following its tremendous success with Guys & Dolls in 2019 and is thrilled to be performing this excellent musical for their 2020 production. ■

Micha side-striped jeans Isobel's Fashions

Side-stripe trousers

Götti at Cecil Amey

Design comes from the heart. It’s the certainty upon which Swiss designer Sven Götti based his guiding principles. To him eyewear design is a slow, intellectual and technical process in which style is broken down to the highest degree of simplicity. In Götti’s designs, every last detail is thought about. Although guided by his obsession with straight lines, this is not at the expense of the technical aspect of his designs: frames without screws, glue or solder, 3D printed eyewear structures, the flattest temple folding systems... This brand continually blends engineering and ingenuity. Available exclusively in Norwich and Wroxham branches of Cecil Amey Gotti frames start at £285 Cecil Amey

Milly J Shoes It’s probably the simplest, cleanest detail possible to add to a pair of trousers – a vertical stripe down the leg in a contrasting colour, print or fabric. And yet, for such a literally straightforward design element, it can be transformative. It’s a really simple device that actually has a great impact. Running from waistband to hem, a stripe creates something of an optical illusion that serves to elongate the leg. There are all sorts of different variations around on the high street, but we love these Micha jeans we found at Isobels Fashions. You can dress them up or down, perfect for casual days or for throwing on when a degree of smartness is required. They’re comfy too and taper slightly towards the ankle for a crisp finish! December 2019/January 2020 Vanilla

As well as her previous award wins, this year Emily Jupp of Milly J Shoes was delighted to win both the national Wedding Specialist award from the Luxury Travel Awards and named as one of Norfolk’s 100 most inspiring women by the EDP. Well done Emily!

“It is easy to lose sight of it being an exciting time for the children and their best interests must be put before others”

How can we make Christmas work now we’re separated? MY QUESTION: I have recently separated from my partner and we have two children together, aged 4 and 6. We are unable to agree who the children should spend Christmas with and how things stand, I do not know whether I will see my children over the Christmas period. Is there anything I can do?

38

ANSWER: Christmas can often cause great difficulties for many when arranging how the children should spend their time between, not only the parents, but the wider family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, etc. It is easy to lose sight of it being an exciting time of year for the children and their best interests must be put before others. Therefore it may not necessarily be in the children’s best interests to spend Christmas Eve with one parent and then have to up sticks on Christmas Day to go and spend part of the day with the other.

A better arrangement may be to spend Christmas Eve with one parent, all the way through to Boxing Day morning, before moving to the other parent for the remainder of the festive period. This arrangement can then alternate each year so that you both have a fair share of Christmas time with the children. What is most important though, for your children, is that they see their parents working together and not bickering and fighting. As you have been unable to agree arrangements for Christmas it may well be that you would be better to try to work

Vanilla December 2019/January 2020

REAL LIVES with a mediator when discussing the issues any further. Either parent can make a referral to mediation or you can make a joint referral. The mediator will see you both individually in the first instance and you can both explain your positions and what you would like to achieve in respect of contact arrangements for the children over Christmas. The mediator will then see you together to hopefully work out arrangements that will work for this year and for the future. Mediation can find very flexible solutions and it can be far quicker and cheaper than an application to the Court. However, if you have been unable to agree between yourselves and at mediation, then you will then need to consider instructing a solicitor and/or making an application to the Court for a Child Arrangement Order. Solicitors will negotiate these matters on your behalf and often a solution can be found when discussions are taken out of the parent’s hands. However, this can be costly but in the same way as with mediation, there is no guarantee that a solution can be found.

I

n the event that you have tried all of the above without success, then you may wish to apply to the Court for a Child Arrangement Order. The Court will look at your family arrangements, in regards to the ages of the children, where each parent lives. It is likely that any order will be a compromise for both you and partner. A Court

Order is binding but it is also inflexible. It will set out clearly the time the children spend with each of you including dates and times for handovers and even arrangements where children are to be picked up and dropped off and by whom. If you have to make an application to the Court, the mediator will provide you with a form called a MIAM which certifies that you have considered mediation but it has not provided a remedy for you. You can then apply directly to the Court or you can employ a solicitor to deal with the application if you prefer. There is a Court fee to be paid of £215

when the application is sent to the local family court. It is worth bearing in mind that the Family Courts are busy, particularly in the run up to Christmas. Therefore if it appears that there are problems of this type you need to make an application to the Court as soon as you can, to ensure that your application is dealt with before the holiday season and not left to be considered in the New Year. It is often helpful to seek some legal advice before making an application to the Court to find out what arrangements are likely to find favour with the Court for your family. ■

PEOPLE

Bright... free... powerful Regular Vanilla writer Lucy Ohsten looks at the life and work of her mother, the Norwich artist Kay Ohsten

I

F YOU’RE interested in the local art scene you will probably be familiar with the name Kay Ohsten. She was, and remains, an artist ahead of her time, a talented painter and printmaker who created work of such endearing quality that, 16 years after her death, she still shines out as one of the most impressive artists the region has ever seen. As her daughter I may be a little biased, of course, but I know that anyone who has seen her work appreciates its skill, beauty and sheer versatility. Her pictures range from expansive watercolours of the local landscape and her beloved Norwich; abstract screen prints, including her much sought-after ‘bodies’ and ‘flowers’; powerful watercolours that charted the building of Castle Mall (now Castle Quarter) back in the early 90s – pictures packed with action, colour and vibrancy – plus collages and many others that use a vast array of different mediums. I have many wonderful memories of my mother, and one of them is her compulsion to work, every day, whether she was in her studio, or just out and about. Her sketch pad was never far away, ready to capture whatever scene caught her eye.

40

Kay Ohsten with a selection of her artwork

S

HE JUST loved to paint, draw, make something, and this drive made her one of the most prolific artists of her generation. Born in 1935, Kay was a true ‘Norwich’ artist, a graduate of Norwich Art School (where she later taught graphic design), and a member of the Norwich 20 Group, a prestigious collection of the counties very best artists. She trained as a draughtswoman, and so her accuracy for perspective and architectural correctness was beyond reproach. You can see this in her work that features buildings, and people too; perfect proportions and perspective, and that’s the mark of a true artist. But with that skill she was able to be flexible and she never favoured

the tight ‘photographic’ depiction of anything in her work. She was very much an impressionist, using the lightest touch and superb skill and technique to produce work that was bright, free and powerful. This epitomised her work. Sadly, my mother passed away in 2003, and she left behind a body of work that goes back decades – a very accurate representation of her passion for working, always tapping into that creative spark. I want her work to be seen, loved, appreciated and admired by as many people as possible – the way I and many others already do. ● Take a look at Kay’s work on Facebook or Instagram (@kayohsten), and if you are interested in owning a piece please get in touch.

PROFILE BALANCING with Dr Linea at the Norwich Face & Body Clinic

Profile balancing is a treatment Dr Linea has found to be in increasing demand over the last year, with more and more

patients seeking definition of the jaw and adding contour to the face without the use of highlighter makeup or an Instagram filter! Profile balancing creates the perfect silhouette – balancing the nose, to the lips, to the chin. This is done by subtly adding volume to the jawline and cheeks to give more of a contour, and often results in a slimmer looking face. These days, the art of taking a ‘Selfie’ has been mastered by the vast majority of people, but when a photograph is taken by others, we often feel unhappy about our appearance and our profile and

class it as a ‘bad photograph’. Commonly, patients seeking rhinoplasty or a lip augmentation, may not be aware their chin maybe more of the root of their unbalanced face. A retracted chin can make the nose appear longer, and an undefined jaw can make the face look larger. By adding hyaluronic acidbased dermal filler to the chin, Dr Linea is able to project the chin forward which defines the jawline, helping to shape the face and balance the profile. By correcting the ratio between the nose and the lips, and then the lips to the chin, you can re-harmonise one’s profile. This is very much an individualised treatment and the amount of filler that would be

2020 HAIR TRENDS

Swap your high-pony for a chic and sleek low look

Signature StandenMay, effortlessly undone

Cute for everyday wear: prairie girl plaits

ITH 2020 just a glass of champagne or two away, we’ve been delving into exactly what SS20 may bring... Since our stylists have been busy this year doing hair just about everywhere, from Paris to LA, we wanted to give you the low down on what looks we can expect come the new season, and so read on for our 2020 trend report and enter the new year with the most beautiful hair… ever! Creating hair in the fashion industry over the past two decades has always been something very avant-garde, something ever so ‘oh fashion, darling’ – but the last couple of years, fashion week hair has been so much more wearable, meaning that everyone can have the same look that Gigi and Kendal grace the runway with. Wearable (adjective): capable of being worn, suitable and ready for whatever occasion may be thrown at you, and always, always looking effortlessly ‘done’. Fashion Week for SS20 saw simplicity at its finest, with prairie girl plaits showing us that even the quickest braids can be cute

for everyday wear and low ponytails secured at the nape of the neck are super chic when getting away with the last look before hair-wash day! Un-done texture means that you needn’t straighten your locks within an inch of their life, or spend 45 minutes sectioning and twirling with a tong you never really learned how to use. Our favourite looks for 2020 are those that you can create at home each day and let a truly good hair cut speak a thousand ‘how to’ guides with just a couple of products to maintain your hair’s health. We create hair at STANDENMAY using the most advanced technicality to create the look that’s most wearable for you, whether your look is soft and natural inspired by the iconic looks of our generation or influenced by our fashion-lead aesthetic, we make sure that your hair is easy to style yourself without all the hairdresser-y fuss (unless it’s fuss you’re after). ■

TIME FOR YOU TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE

W

HEN WE MET Norfolk based coach, businesswoman, and author Paula Meir she had one simple message. “If you want to feel happier, more confident, and less stressed, it’s time to take control”. Since moving to Norfolk five years ago Paula has built a successful therapy and coaching practice at Creative Space on Grapes Hill in Norwich. She turned her back on a jetsetting corporate lifestyle seven years ago and has never looked back. “I was definitely NOT in control of my life. My role as a HR leader took me to all corners of the globe but I was stressed, ill, and far from happy. My confidence had been eroded over the years and I knew something had to give.” Paula left her job, took her many years of people experience, and wrote her first book, Your Life,

52

Your Way: A Practical Guide To Getting Your S**t Together. It quickly climbed the best seller charts and set her on a completely new path. “I’d had an epiphany. I realised that everyone else was in control of my life. Not me. Outwardly, I was the epitome of a successful businesswoman, but inside I was struggling.” Paula now coaches people from all walks of life on how to take control of their lives, deploying several therapeutic techniques: she is a qualified clinical hypnotherapist, licensed Havening practitioner, Executive Coach, and licensed in a number of psychometric profiling systems. “Every person is different. In my work I use a variety of tools and techniques to help people understand themselves, disperse the impact of trauma, and help them take control of their lives.”

So, what advice does Paula have for Vanilla readers moving into 2020? “If you are feeling low on confidence, stressed, or lacking purpose, it’s time for a reevaluation. Ask yourself three simple questions: Have I been accepting mediocrity in my life? Could I be healthier, happier, and more fulfilled? Could I better explore my full potential and creativity? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then start looking for immediate changes you could make in each area of your life.” For more free tips and great content on how to build confidence and reduce stress in your life simply follow Paula on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram (@paulameir). BY JOELLE FORDHAM MOst(DO) PRINCIPAL OSTEOPATH AT BODY FLOW OSTEOPATHY If I say “sciatica”, chances are you’ve had it yourself or you will know someone who has. However, Sciatica is a very misused medical terms and is often misdiagnosed. True Sciatica involves a nerve compression which typically leads to pain below the knee, numbness and/or muscle weakness. However, referred pain from the lower back & buttock can often mimic sciatica and this is typically what the majority of people experience. These cases are typically much easier to treat and significant improvements are often seen quickly within just a few sessions. We’ve seen people who had suffered from on/ off sciatica-like pain for as much as 25 years get better with a course of treatment with drastic improvements to their quality of life and moods. Reducing unnecessary pain and suffering is what we’re all about. Our treatment approach is gentle and effective and our new clients often comment on how at ease they felt, having initially been apprehensive about booking an appointment.

Find out how you could look with straighter teeth, in just 60 seconds!

“A computer generated image is a great starting point for anyone who is thinking about getting their teeth straightened”

R

oss Campbell and his team have earned a reputation for bringing the most innovative modern technology into the practice, giving their patients the best treatments, with minimum fuss and pain. As well as the latest dental techniques, patients can benefit from Ross’s facial laser rejuvenation skills in removing wrinkles, scar tissue, pigmentation, skin tags, bumps and lumps on the face. This versatility has made Ross Campbell one of the most popular and sought after professionals in the business. One of the latest tools Ross has brought into the practice is a new free online app that helps people to see what they would look like with straighter teeth – in just 60 seconds – using their own Smartphone or tablet. “In 2009, we started to offer our patients Invisalign, which is a method of realigning teeth without using metal or wires,” explains Ross. “The

54

ROSS CAMPBELL

treatment is easy, comfortable and nearly invisible. Invisalign has now launched SmileView, which allows the user to take a picture of themselves and see a computer generated preview of how they could look with straighter teeth, in just 60 seconds. “Many people are self conscious about their teeth, if they feel they are crooked or out of alignment. The beauty of

SmileView is its convenience; you can do it in the privacy of your own home, it’s incredibly easy to use, completely free and gives an instant snapshot of how your teeth could look after Invisalign treatment. As a bonus, it’s great fun, too. “There is no obligation to do anything with the results, but if you’re interested to take it further you can share your preview with me and come in for an informal

chat. The computer generated image is a starting point for anyone who is thinking about getting their teeth straightened with Invisalign, but of course any treatment would be tailored to make sure the results meet with client expectations.”

I

was intrigued to try SmileView for myself. Could it really be that easy to get a before and after view without filling in loads of details online and it all being just too much trouble? I was very pleasantly surprised. All I had to do was scan a QR code into my phone to get started. This code is specific to Ross Campbell’s practice. After a few seconds the screen showed me a selfie view and asked me to give a big grin into the camera, and the snapshot was taken. Seeing what I would look like with straighter teeth was very interesting. If I thought they really needed to be taken care of, and it was something I had been thinking or worrying about, SmileView would certainly be a real incentive to take action, because I could see how great the results would be. There was an option to send the results to Ross, but without any pressure to do so. It’s just a way to give him a heads up if you want to go and talk about it. SmileView is such a great idea, an easy way to get an instant and accurate prediction of self improvement. It’s fun, too, but with a very serious aim; giving the user the power and tools to see how they can improve their teeth. Power to the people! ■

L GUIDE

Here is your handy cut-out-and-keep guide to make sure your carpets survive Christmas!

1

What’s to be done when Santa arrives at your home and the inevitable HOT EMBERS AND ASH are left on your carpet from the chimney? A wool hearth mat will keep embers from burning your carpet. Cool ashes are best picked out with the vacuum cleaner. We always suggest a suction cleaner, especially on wool carpets. A beater bar can be used on heavily soiled man-made carpets.

2

So the elves are relaxing after preparing for the Big Day and have spilt a full GLASS OF RED WINE on the cream living room carpet. Firstly, do not panic, all is not ruined. All you

need is warm water in a spray bottle and a roll of plain white kitchen roll. Blot as much of the red wine up as you can, use fresh sheets of kitchen roll, this will pull the liquid from the pile. Spray the warm water on the effected area. Continue to blot until the wine is mopped out – with red wine it is important to do this as quickly as possible. Remember this may not remove the stain entirely, if this is the case PLEASE DO NOT USE CHEMICAL CLEANERS.

These cause more problems than they solve. If in doubt, call in professional cleaning company... your local carpet dealer will be able to recommend one to you.

3

We all know that little children and pets can get very excited at Christmas. We have heard that Rudolph is the worse! So if you have an accident with SOLID MESS you’ll need an old spatula, kitchen roll and warm water in a spray bottle. Scrape up as much of the solid as possible, then use the warm water and spray and blot. Continue this until the area is clean. For any remaining stains always get the effected area spot-cleaned by a professional.

WISHING EVERYONE A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A STAIN-FREE HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Talk about a stunning kitchen! Vanilla goes onsite with The Norfolk Workshop

All of the kitchens are hand-made from scratch and installed by a team of skilled cabinet makers

manager, David Shepperd. “I think what makes The Norfolk Workshop different from other kitchen manufacturers is we are very much a small, traditional, family-run business. The team are all highly skilled craftsmen, there are no sales people, and customers will see the same team throughout the process, from our first visit to their home, to installation. “We work with customers’ ideas for their dream kitchen, advising on what they can, and sometimes cannot, do. This ensures they always have a kitchen that not only looks superb, but that works in every sense and maximises all available space. “The manufacturing process is also something that sets us apart. Everything is handmade in our workshop, using oak lacquered veneer for all the cabinet carcasses, Tulip Wood for doors

and frames and traditional oak for things like drawers and shelves. “We use modern as well as traditional methods, which allows us to make or replicate anything, such as mouldings, which is often the case in very old period properties. There is nothing at all ‘standard’ about what we make, everything is bespoke. “The Norfolk Workshop only works with a small group of trusted contractors on the electrical and plumbing side, as well as having all their kitchens hand-painted by the award-winning Mark Hutchinson Decorators. Everything is designed to deliver that dream kitchen the customer wants – we never compromise on quality or service.” ■ The Norfolk Workshop, Unit 1, North Norfolk Business Centre, Northrepps, Cromer NR27 9RQ t: 01263 510315 www.norfolkworkshop.co.uk

he Norfolk Workshop have built a reputation for creating bespoke kitchens with a real ‘wow’ factor; uniquely beautiful, stylish and with effortless functionality – they also perfectly suit the customer’s personality. From their workshop in Cromer they hand-make everything from scratch and their kitchens can be found in some of the most beautiful and high-end period properties in Norfolk, from small cottages to large country houses. Owner Marc Cushing started the business in 2001, and as a cabinet maker he wanted to offer people the highest quality handmade furniture. “I started doing small things for people; wardrobes, tables, and then word spread fast,” he says. “Over the years my reputation grew, and people began asking me to make kitchens as well. This has now become the core of the business and by 2015 I had a team of four skilled craftsmen. Plus this year I appointed a project

STYLE FILE BY KARL BUCK AT PAINT & PAPER

QUESTION: My kitchen is starting to look a bit old and tired. How do I go about transforming it into a modern-looking kitchen on a budget? ANSWER: Unfortunately, we do not all have the

budget to buy a brand new kitchen but, with the help of specialist paint brands and finishes, it is really easy to give your kitchen a fresh new look without spending a fortune... and without the expense of buying any replacement parts! Preparation is the key. Remove cabinet doors to make working easier and if they have been waxed, this must be thoroughly removedby using a patent wax remover. Otherwise, you can use fine wire wool and white spirit. The cabinets must be then washed with a solution of sugar soap and left to dry. If they have been previously painted, they should be lightly sanded and primed. We recommend Mylands Wood Primer, which is highly recommended for priming previously painted items. Once you have finished your preparation its time to start painting. We’d recommend Mylands Eggshell paint. If you are looking for a matt finish, use the Matt, or if you’d like a shinier, glossy finish use the Gloss. All three are suited to interior wood.

Cupboards in Mylands ‘Blueprint’

We also recommend using a high quality paintbrush. We normally use Axus paintbrushes as they are extremely tough and more durable than traditional brands. A 2” paintbrush will be fine. Begin painting your cabinets and doors. As a general rule, brush strokes should follow the construction of the piece and in the case of real wood, the direction of the grain. Although the product may be touch dry, allow at least 16 hours between coats and then repeat the painting process. Two coats should be sufficient. ● For further advice, please feel free to email me at Karl@paint-paper.co.uk

FOOD

Meet the @ The Cellar House Daniel Forde has recently joined The Cellar House, in Eaton, as head chef. Vanilla caught up with him on one of his rare days off to talk about the ‘pub grub' relaxed dining menu he has created and his passion for food.

What inspires you as a chef? I used to watch Masterchef a lot, and my food heroes are Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay. I love their passion, dedication and the way they create such simple, unfussy dishes, with the focus on the ingredients. Respect for ingredients is paramount for me, and buying great quality local produce. All our suppliers are Norwich-based, and there is so much choice. Do you have a signature dish? I love to cook fish, it’s simple, quick, fresh and delicious One of the most popular dishes on our menu is pan fried sea bass with crushed new potatoes, sautéed samphire and a brown shrimp butter sauce. It’s a real showstopper.

74

How have you developed the menu at The Cellar House? Since I arrived six months ago I have worked hard to improve the tapas menu. This was already a popular side for the business, but I have added some more dishes to ‘sex’ it up even more; such as pan fried chorizo and baby squid in a spicy tomato sauce; honey and wholegrain mustard chipolatas; and sautéed mushrooms in a creamy garlic sauce on ciabatta. What are the most popular dishes on the menu? Apart from the fish dish, Sunday lunch is always a winner, I think the tradition of a great roast once

a week will always be popular. We also have a superb pan fried lamb’s liver with garlic mash, braised red cabbage, red wine gravy and bacon crisps – the diners adore it, it’s so full of flavour. What do you like to cook when you are not working? I have a young family, so I really enjoy making good wholesome dishes for them, like cottage pie, or a great pastry pie always goes down very well. n The Cellar House 2 Eaton St, Norwich NR4 7AB 01603 454511

T

HE FIRST THING you notice when you walk into The Wallow is the atmosphere… it’s buzzing, lively and clearly one of Norwich’s hottest spots. This was a Saturday night and my partner and I were here to try the many delights of this unusual wine bar and eatery. The main focus of The Wallow is a true celebration of wine, but in a very unusual way. There are selfservice wine dispensers on each of the three floors, showcasing a vast selection of wines from around the world; 52 in total. You buy a credit card loaded up with however much you want to spend, and just help yourself to the measure you want; a 25ml taster, 125ml or 175ml. Its a genius idea, the perfect way to try lots of different wines and find your favourites. It takes you on a virtual wine tasting tour

76

The Wallow around the world without having to buy a whole bottle, although you can do that too. It’s also a great way to pair wine with food, and here we come on to another fantastic string to The Wallow’s bow. The menu here is specifically tailored to complement wine; with a great range of tasty tapas dishes, nibbles like crisps, nuts and olives and hot food like baked camembert. Then there are The Wallow’s amazing sharing boards, a generous selection of meat, fish, cheese and antipasti, all served with crackers, mixed nuts and grapes. Our hosts put together a special sharing board for us, and it was quite something. There were 16 items on it and there isn’t enough room here to describe each one, but it was gorgeous to look at, and mouthwatering in every sense. The highlights were marinated

prawns, anchovies, gravadlax, cheeses from around the world, including Suffolk’s own Baron Bigod (served at the recent royal wedding), and the most delicious boilie pearls, Irish goat’s cheese with herbs, black pepper and garlic oil. Delish! With bread too, it was a feast. As we enjoyed different elements of the board, we tried different wines to complement; a fresh French Granache rosé with the cheeses; a light Reisling and a fruity Pinot Grigot with the fish; and reds Chilean Malbec and Syrah Granache which were fabulous with meats. This is freestyle eating and drinking, it breaks all the rules and you can just make it up as you go along. With Christmas fast approaching, The Wallow is a superb spot to start an evening out with a few glasses of wine and nibbles, or stay for the duration. There was a huge cross section of people here, of all ages, so they are doing something right. The lunchtime crowd here is very different, so owner Laz told me, but always busy. Great service and the best wine and food. I’ll return here with a gang of pals for sure. n REVIEW: LUCY OHSTEN The Wallow, 36 Exchange St, Norwich NR2 1AX t: 01603 446676 www.wallowwine.co.uk

Chris Coughlan Owner of Lakenham Creamery

My City Life

What do you love about Norwich? This is such a wonderfully historic city and crammed full of interesting places, there is always something new to discover. Norwich is very compact, too, so you can walk everywhere. Seeing a city on foot is always the best way to fully appreciate it. What makes Lakenham Creamery so special? We are now the only small to medium sized ice cream maker in the UK that uses fresh cream as it’s main ingredient; that’s 80% fresh cream for our Norfolk County range. We use 80% fresh milk for our Aldous brand. This means there are very few companies of our size making ice cream with actual cream. We are very proud of keeping this standard so high and making a ‘true’ product.

Which of the company’s ice cream flavours are your personal favourites? I love Raspberries & Cream and Mascarpone & Fig, and last year we created Rhubarb & Custard, a delicious traditional flavour. This year we have developed a wonderful Christmas flavour; Nog ice cream, which is made using single malt whisky from the English Whisky Company near Attleborough. Warming and cooling at the same time. What are the most popular flavours at Christmas? We have some wonderful indulgent flavours that always go down well at this festive time. Apricot & Brandy is a favourite. It’s made with Remy Martin Fine Champagne Cognac. Zabaglione, Stem Ginger and Rich Butterscotch are popular all year round, as they are perfect for special celebrations.

Are there any new exciting flavours to look forward to? We always like to play things close to our chest when it comes to developing new flavours. It’s a long and complex process to get the combinations just right, which involves a great deal of tasting! But we are always working on new ideas, so watch this space! What are your hidden gems in the city? I’m a complete bookaholic, so you can often find me in Jarrold’s basement buying books. I often pop into Thorns DIY store on Exchange Street. It’s an amazing place, very special and traditional and you can, literally, get anything there. It’s like going home. For food, my wife and I really like Al Dente on St Giles. A traditional, family-run Italian restaurant, with superb food and wonderful service. Always a great night out. n
