THE BOUDOIR SESSIONS A fabulous photoshoot showcasing striking lingerie in a truly unique location in the heart of our city...

A

ND HERE IS the end result of an inspired collaboration between Norwich photographer Julia Holland; lingerie boutique, Proudlock & Harry and Royal Arcade location, Berrys & Grey. “We loved the eclectic mix of both our brands – both offering something different on the high street, for all budgets.” explains Clare from Proudlock & Harry. “We had some fun. We started the photoshoot at 5pm on a lazy Sunday afternoon and attracted lots of attention from passers by!” Lingerie worn as outerwear is a huge look for the coming year, it was seen on the catwalks of Fashion Weeks around the world. The look is not about exposing your lingerie, more about a hint of what lies beneath. A longline bra or a camisole worn under a sheer shirt or suit jacket, a corset worn with a pencil skirt or trousers or a long silk slip worn as a dress. The look is feminine, whilst still leaving a little to the imagination. We hope these pictures might give a little Christmas present inspiration too?

The Biggest Little Christmas Show in Town!

OR SOME TIME, I've wanted to experience Delia’s restaurant. Because I'm part Norwich City football fanatic and part culinary enthusiast it must make for the perfect combination. I've heard some great things said about the restaurant over the past couple of years which has fuelled my desire to try it. Simple home-cooked food – it’s an ethos on which Delia has built her career. So it was refreshing to find all

stand on the terraces and scream at the ref, but instead enjoy the warmth of the River End Stand restaurant and some lovely Delia inspired dishes. Once inside the first floor restaurant, you quickly forget you are in the middle of a football ground stand with the hallowed pitch, where I've cheered in match-winning ecstasy and groaned in desperation, just over there. Instead you're in a very elegant fine-dining setting. We were greeted warmly and opted for a drink in the bar and chose a cold and crisp Chilean Sauvignon Blanc with some equally crisp, but this time warm slivers of Autumnal root vegetables accompanied by a tangy aioli dip. All to get the tastebuds tantalised for what was to follow. I never like to look at menus before I go to a restaurant, for the record, I don’t understand why people do this. For me, the surprise of reading

Alongside each dish on the menu is a small quote from the Queen of Carrow Road herself, telling us why she likes it, and tempting us to order it! of the dishes at the restaurant had been resurrected from either one of her TV shows or numerous bestselling cookery books. Alongside each dish on the menu is a small quote from the Queen of Carrow Road herself, telling us why she likes it, and tempting us to order it! So what was I expecting from this evening out? Well some very simple food, cooked very well, in fantastic surroundings, and reassuringly that’s exactly what I got. It was strange for me – a Canaries fan to approach the cold dark football ground on a windy Friday night not to

through the menu is one of the best parts of a dining experience. The menu ticked every pre-conceived box of what I could want, simple food but with some nice ingredients that you perhaps wouldn’t have on a daily basis. We opted for the coarse country pate, with pickled vegetables and chargrilled sourdough and a very clever, but simple artichoke vinaigrette. The pate, packed with veal, pork and liver was generously flavoured with robust herbs like rosemary and thyme. Perfect with the chargrilled home made sourdough toasts. The pickled

UST A FEW STEPS AWAY from the Guildhall in the centre of Norwich (the largest medieval civic building in the country outside London, by the way) and tucked away in one of those delightful old courtyards which typify the city's proud commercial heritage, you'll find The Wine Cellar - an aptly-named bar and restaurant that describes itself as "a piece of gourmet heaven born from an ethos of gorgeous wine, great food, and generous service." Duly tempted by such promise, and having booked ourselves a Friday evening treat, we arrived to discover a very clear (and welcome) division between the bar and restaurant elements of The Wine Cellar. Good food and good drink are always best enjoyed together, of course, but sometimes the drinkers and the diners are a little too close. Although it does have a degree of formality about it, The Wine Cellar restaurant is a very relaxing and welcoming place. The walls are a warm, deep red, the low ratio of tables to space is perfect (it actually feels quite exclusive), and what must

be the most uneven brick floor in the city only adds to the charm. While my friend immediately started looking at the food options, I went straight for the Wine List to see whether the restaurant's name had more to do with the location than the drinks on offer. I was actually very impressed with the wine choice, which comprised a wide collection of whites (from six different countries), reds (from seven), an unusually large choice of roses and a very good selection of sparkling wines and champagnes - several of which were available by the glass. Given such a world of choice, I'm afraid I wasn't too adventurous with my wine – opting for the bright and zesty Torre Aldea Rioja. My friend – who doesn't drink wine – ordered a half pint of Old Golden Hen. Being a vegetarian, my dinner was an easy choice: the roast aubergine, accompanied by a red wine, onion, tomato and cinnamon ragu, with creamed feta, a spiced sweet potato salad, crisp shallots and almonds. My friend, meanwhile, spent ages debating whether to have the Gressingham duck or the braised short rib of beef – only to forgo the meat and choose a fish dish! I can't say I blame her either, as it sounded

THEATRE Norwich Theatre Royal highlights 4-6 DECEMBER

Oh What a Lovely War

Youth Theatre Company Staged to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the start of World War I, this musical play is a powerful chronicle, both comic and deeply poignant, told through songs and sketches of the time, with original pictures and film footage from the trenches. Set against the background of a period end-of-the-pier show, and first staged in 1963, Oh What A Lovely War has gone on to become a classic of modern theatre. Venue: The Garage Tickets £7.50-£9 11 -13 DECEMBER

Richard III

As part of the celebrations of the 450th Anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth,

one of his most famous history plays is brought to life in an inventive new staging that is at once sardonic, comic and macabre. Richard of Gloucester lets nothing and nobody stand in the way of his malevolent climb to the throne, but the curses of doomed Queen Margaret catch up with him in the end. Murder, battles, infanticide, ghosts and a hump – all life is here! Venue: The Garage Tickets £7.50-£9 18 DEC - 18 JAN

Peter Pan

An all-star cast will bring the classic story of the boy who never grew up. Heading the cast will be Coronation Street's Kevin Kennedy as the evil Captain Hook. Kevin trod the ‘Corrie cobbles’ for 20 years as the kind-hearted Curly Watts. He will be joined on stage by CBeebies favourite

December 2014/January 2015 Vanilla

Maddermarket Theatre 3 DECEMBER

Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Christmas Carol By John Longenbaugh

Literature’s favourite quirky detective is infused with the spirit of a crotchety Ebenezer Scrooge in this festive Victorian theatrical treat. After failed attempts by Dr. Watson to cheer Holmes into celebrating the holiday season, the unrepentant, ill-tempered detective is forced to deduce the facts and solve the most important mystery of his life – past, present and future. £12 (£10 Concessions)

19 DEC- 3 JAN

The Borrowers By Mary Norton, adapted by Charles Way

Following the success of their last two Christmas shows, The Snow Queen and The Railway Children, the Maddermarket wanted to build on their reputation for offering quality original entertainment for the family and The Borrowers, written by Mary Norton in 1952 and adapted for the stage by Charles Way, was an obvious if elusive choice. An adventurous, heartwarming Christmas treat for children aged 6+ and their bigger 'human beans', it is a wonderful story of the "tiny" Clock family, who live beneath the floorboards of a large Victorian house and "borrow" from the big people above to survive. £10-£15 Family ticket £38 www.maddermarket.co.uk

Richard Gauntlett a.k.a. Smee Theatre Royal Norwich

My City Life as they are for the whole family from the three year old’s to the 103-year-olds. A good pantomime has to entertain them all.

Where do you stay when you're here? I have digs in the city where I stay although I don’t see too much of them, especially during the rehearsal period. I have worked with some fantastic people during the panto season. Last year it was Cinderella which had a very happy talented cast, a spectacular show and fantastic audiences. This year it is Peter Pan. We have another wonderful cast lined up with stage effects, flying and stunts never attempted before, plus a large amount of gunge. I can’t wait!!!

How do you plan to spend Christmas Day? I usually head back to my home in Surrey for Christmas lunch but I’m back in Norwich for Boxing Day. There are two performances that day, so no rest for the wicked. Meet Richard Gauntlett, a mainstay of the Norwich Theatre Royal pantomime. This year, he will be playing Smee in Peter Pan from December 18-January 18 opposite an all-star cast including Kevin Kennedy (Coronation Street, We Will Rock You) as Captain Hook, and Sid Sloane (CBeebies) as ship’s cook Aunt Delilah.

This will be your 14th panto season at Theatre Royal and the 13th you have written. Do you enjoy the panto season? I do. My first pantomime was a version of Peter Pan for a producer who wanted a pantomime version of the story. The following year, I wrote two more for the same producer and before I knew it, I was spending all year writing them. I’ve now had over 100 scripts performed professionally and many more used by amateur groups up and down the country. I love them

What do you love best about Norwich? It is a fantastic city. It has lots of history, lovely people, and plenty to do. It also has my favourite pantomime audiences, of course.

With lots of shows per week there's not much time off, but what do you like to do here in your spare time? Well it is not too bad. Working over Christmas is all I’ve known for the past 22 years! We have a day off Christmas Day and then two shows on Boxing Day so it is usually pretty hectic! I’ve learnt to prepare. I try to do most of my Christmas shopping and wrapping before panto rehearsals begin. When I get a break, I love spending time with my family and I am also really interested in the history of both pantomime and the world of variety.
