Merlot and a taste of something closer to home in the shape of Jo C’s locally brewed Knot Just Another IPA. To start, I ordered the TwiceBaked Binham Blue Souffle, served with mixed salad herbs and a mustard dressing. The souffle itself was divine – perfectly light and fluffy with a generous kick from Mrs Temple’s most famous cheese. The mustard dressing was lovely too, mouth-watering rather than eyewatering. The second starter was a marvellous-looking Grilled Mackerel fillet, with beetroot pearled spelt and creamy horseradish. Putting beetroot and coriander together was an inspired idea, and the mackerel was outstanding. My main course was the Filo Pastry Galette of Wilted Spinach, Rosary Goat Cheese and Crushed Norfolk Maris Peers, with a tomato and cardamom relish, and every part worked well together. It was a brilliant dish. But I must admit the maincourse Pan-fried Sea bass, with October/November 2014 Vanilla
its spiced re-fried chickpea-andcauliflower base and topping of crispy whitebait, looked highly impressive when it arrived. The highlight, I was told, was the whitebait, which had a surprise dusting of sesame seeds and dried chilli, although the sea bass itself was outstanding, a fact I can attest to as I managed to sample a piece.
F
INALLY, WE BOTH enjoyed a Raspberry Sorbet with chilled whisky custard and vanilla shortbread. Sharp, rich, delightful... just what a dessert
should be. Strattons has so much to offer – from the individually designed rooms to the adjacent CoCoes cafe and deli. We counted 14 different awards the hotel and restaurant have won over the years, dotted around. Strattons doesn’t like to make a song and dance about all those accolades and that says a lot about the place. They would obviously rather let the building, the decor, the food and the experience do the talking – and when it’s as good as this, I can’t say I blame them. REVIEWER: NICKY SECKER-BLIGH

RESERVE DE FLEUR 2013 Expect to pay: £8.90 From our wine supplier, Peter Graham Wines, and also at Jarrolds rather lovely deli
n chilly autumn nights, I tend to crave a rich, robust red wine with spicy, earthy qualities… bring on the Syrah! The red wines of the Rhône Valley certainly fit the bill here. Embodying the full-bodied, warming and spicy character one of my favorites on the list at St Benedicts Restaurant, is the Reserve de Fleur 2013 a modern style, unoaked Côtes du Rhône, blended to reflect its origins in the hot southern Rhône Valley, next to the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape region in the southern Rhône. It is made from 75% Syrah, 20% Grenache and 5% Carignan. The large pebbles in the vineyards retain the daytime heat and give the grapes ripeness while the hot sandy soils give power and spice. It has been blended to give the clean, bright fruit prominence, backed up by the structure of delicate tannins and balancing acidity. Perfect with lamb, Mediterranean sausages, ratatouille or pasta.
Jayne Raffles has been running restaurants in Norwich with husband Nigel since 1990. Their restaurants are St Benedicts, The Library Bar and Grill and Pinocchio’s. October/November 2014 Vanilla

For the starters (given the location, I guess that should be the prologue) I selected the Scottish Smoked Salmon with lemon and black pepper, while my dining partner decided on the Red Pepper and Goat’s Cheese Bruschetta with pesto and pine nuts. They were both artfully arranged and packed with flavour, and my smoked salmon was absolutely delicious. For our mains, I chose the vegetarian Breaded Filled Mushroom Burger, which was stuffed with blue cheese and a liberal helping of spring onion. My dining partner selected the wood-grilled House Burger, with Cheddar cheese, bacon and BBQ. Both were served with a side salad, homemade chips and onion rings.
W
HEN OUR MEALS arrived, my initial reaction was simply ‘wow’ due in no small part to the truly generous portions. Gym tomorrow, I thought. As we tucked in we swapped praises. The strength of the blue cheese in my burger was perfect. My friend’s chips were some of the best she'd ever tasted (reminding her of the best friteries in France, she said). My onion rings were wonderfully crisp and crunchy. Her burger cooked just the way it should be... I think you get the picture. The quality of the food can be judged by the fact that despite our initial misgivings as to the size of our meals, we sat back in front of two clean plates. We did cast our eyes over the dessert menu, and were particularly drawn to the Gooseberry and Blackberry Fool with ginger nut biscuits, but we simply had no room. True to its origins, The Library Restaurant has something for everyone – from couples to parties, weddings to corporate events. It's a stunning setting and the food is truly excellent. And since Jayne and Nigel also run the highly regarded St Benedicts and Pinocchios restaurants on St Benedicts Street, you can treat yourself to an entire trilogy of great meals. Make sure you pay a visit to The Library Restaurant – it’s a great story and I guarantee you a happy ending!

children. This inspired me to train to teach on my return. I really enjoy working with young people and there is nothing more rewarding than seeing young people achieve success. I have worked in a variety of schools in Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.
You are new to the area – what do you think of Norwich? I last visited Norwich over twenty years ago. The City has grown a great deal in that time, but has retained its friendly feel. I love the balance of old and new in the City.
Are there any particular things you would recommend doing in the city? It is early days for me – but a visit to Carrow Road looks a good thing to do this season – Norwich City look set for a good season!
What do you do to relax?
Thank you. Wymondham College has an excellent, long standing reputation for delivering high academic standards, combined with outstanding extra-curricular provision. The philosophy of the College very much matches my own and the boarding dimension is an area that I have a natural
affinity with, as I needed to attend boarding school as a child. My ambitions for the college are simple – to deliver an exceptional, well rounded education for all of our students and to be regarded as a beacon of outstanding practice.
Tell us a bit about your career path, what inspired you to go into education? After leaving Oxford I took a gap year and travelled in India. I became involved in assisting a charity project working with
I enjoy most team sports and watching live sport too. Music is an important part of my life and my tastes are quite eclectic – I am listening to Neil Young and Crazy Horse as I write this article. I also enjoy travelling.
If you had £1 left in the whole world, how would you spend it? Great question! My immediate response would be to buy a lottery ticket ... although if I really was down to my last £1 I’d probably want to save it!
