MUSIC
THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK... A Hell of a Musical!
10
Vanilla December 2016/January 2017
The Norfolk & Norwich Operatic Society returns to the Norwich Theatre Royal from 31st January to 4th February 2017 with the fabulous and funny musical comedy ‘The Witches of Eastwick’.
“This promises to be a stunning production with amazing visual effects”
T
HE NNOS ENJOYS an enviable reputation of producing superb musical shows year after year. They have a loyal following across the county who always look forward to the Society’s productions performed in their regular slot at the theatre at the end of January every year. Their 2015 production of Sister Act sold out and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard was described as ‘magnificent’ by the critics. Witches began life as a novel published in 1984. It’s success quickly led to a movie version released in 1987 starring Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pieiffer and Cher as the three witches alongside Jack Nicholson as the devilish Darryl Van Horne. Sold using the tagline ‘Three beautiful women; one lucky devil’ the film was a big hit and was nominated for several Oscars. Courtesy of musical impresario Cameron Mackintosh The Witches of Eastwick the musical opened in July 2000 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane with Ian McShane (of Lovejoy fame) taking the leading role of Darryl Van Horne. The ‘witches’ have since flown further afield to charm audiences across the globe. The action takes place in the late 1950's in a quintessentially sleepy and uptight New England town called Eastwick, with
December 2016/January 2017 Vanilla
suburban streets, bored women, inadequate men and unhappy marriages hidden behind closed doors... so when the devilish Mr. Darryl Van Horne arrives in town the excitement and intrigue begins. The Norfolk & Norwich Operatic Society production will see Darryl played by Terry Boast, and in the roles of the (not so wicked but naughty) witches are Andrea Ferguson as Sukie, Kathryn White as Jane and Claire Chandler as Alex. This promises to be a stunning production with amazing visual effects where the audience will see the witches flying across the Theatre royal stage! The complexities of this production means the Society is allowing two days to prepare the theatre before opening night on Tuesday 31st January 2017. With matinee performances on Thursday and Saturday it still allows everyone the opportunity to see the show across seven performances. Please note the production contains scenes of an adult nature and is more suitable for age 14+.

usiness is literally bursting at the seams for Alterations Plus, the Hellesdon-based sewing workshop specialising in altering, mending and making clothes, curtains and upholstery. So much so that owner Claire Staff has got her expansion plan all sewn-up with the recent opening of a second branch in Stalham and she plans to have another ‘boutique-style’ drop-in city centre shop within the next two years. Claire has been successfully growing the business for the past 23 years. Offering bespoke services and a can-do attitude, no matter what might be required, she has seen customers from far and wide flocking to her base in the Dixon Centre. “The business has grown and evolved over the years and on any given day in the shop it is just bustling,” said Claire. “I wanted to extend and improve the services
we offer customers, so it has felt like the right time to open another branch.” Claire and her seven-strong sewing team offer a wide range of services including repairing leather, making curtains and roman blinds, as well as producing upholstery for caravans and boats. More recently the workshop has been inundated with work altering wedding dresses having secured business from two large bridal gown suppliers. “So far this year we have carried out alterations to 200 wedding dresses and I am anticipating it will be even more next year,” said Claire. “We like to think out of the box and use our vision and ingenuity. If we can’t fix it, we will make a feature of it in some way, so that it looks as good as new,” said Claire. “I have many customers who have Norwich connections, but live in London. They tend to present us with a bag of sewing when they come to visit.” Coming from a self-employed background, Claire started out when her parents, who ran a dry cleaning business, could not find anyone to do their alterations. “I bought an existing alterations business and now have a fantastic team working for me.” It’s perhaps no surprise to discover that when Claire’s mother did the family tree a few years ago, it turned out that Claire comes from a long line of leather traders, dressmakers and portrait painters. ■ SHEREE HANNA Alterations Plus, Dixons Shopping Centre, 159 Reepham Rd, Norwich NR6 5PA . 01603 406177 Open: Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 9am-1pm www.alterationsplus.co

“To reduce the IHT payable on her death, your mother needs to reduce the value of her estate, which usually involves making lifetime gifts”
Can we change my father’s Will to help with Inheritance Tax? My father died last year and left everything – including shares in the family business and several rental properties – to my mother. Although my mother is in very good health, I am concerned that when she dies, there could a large amount of Inheritance Tax to pay. A friend has suggested that we could change my father’s Will, so that some of his property passes to me now. Is this a good idea? WHAT IS A DEED OF VARIATION?
A Deed of Variation is a document by which the person to whom the property was originally left by the Will (your mother) redirects it to someone else (you). Provided the Deed is made within two years of your father’s death and contains the necessary tax election, it will be treated for Inheritance Tax
44
(and Capital Gains Tax) purposes as though your father’s Will had left the property direct to you – for all other purposes it will be treated as a gift by your mother to you. YOUR MOTHER’S INHERITANCE TAX LIABILITY
There was no Inheritance Tax (IHT) to pay on your father’s
death, as everything left to the surviving spouse is exempt from IHT. When your mother dies, her entire estate (including everything inherited from your father) will be subject to IHT at 40%, after deduction of the Nil Rate Band and any other IHT reliefs. Everyone has a Nil Rate Band of £325,000, so provided your father did not use any of his Nil Rate Band by making lifetime gifts in the seven years before he died, your mother’s executors will be able to claim up to a double Nil Rate Band (currently £650,000) when she dies. In addition to this, provided certain conditions are met, the
Vanilla December 2016/January 2017
REAL LIVES shares in the family company may qualify for 100% Business Property Relief, so no IHT will be payable on the value of those shares on your father’s death – or on your mother’s death, provided the Government does not change the relief in future. To reduce the IHT payable on her death, your mother needs to reduce the value of her estate, which usually involves making lifetime gifts. DEEDS OF VARIATION AND INHERITANCE TAX
For IHT purposes the Deed of Variation is treated as though your father left the redirected property direct to you by his Will. The spouse exemption from IHT will not apply to that property but your father’s Nil Rate Band will be set against its value. If, for example, your mother redirected a house worth £260,000 to you by Deed of Variation, this would use up 80% of your father’s Nil Rate Band and your mother’s executors could claim the unused 20% on her death (i.e. £65,000 at current rates), as well as her own unused Nil Rate Band. If property worth more than £325,000 is redirected to you, then IHT will be payable in your father’s estate and there will be no Transferable Nil Rate Band – so this is not a good idea. A better solution would be for your mother to make the gifts to you herself.
within seven years, the value of the house will use up part of her Nil Rate Band but any increase in its value will not be taken into account. If your mother gives away property worth more than her Nil Rate Band but dies within seven years, tax will be payable on the excess on a sliding scale. Before making any gifts, your mother must be sure that she can afford to maintain her standard of living without the income from the redirected property. THE FAMILY COMPANY
Assuming that the shares in the family company will qualify for Business Property Relief, your mother could redirect the shares to you by a Deed of Variation, whatever their value and this will not use up any of your father’s Nil Rate Band. Although, under
the current rules, this would not save IHT on your mother’s death, it would safeguard against the possibility of the Government reducing the rate of Business Property Relief in future and may be an advantage for Capital Gains Tax purposes if there are plans to sell the Company in the future. Before deciding whether to redirect shares to you, your mother will have to consider the effect of this on control and future running of the company, whether loss of the dividends from your father’s shares will affect her standard of living and any future plans to sell the Company, among other things. FURTHER ADVICE
Taxation is a complex area and it is important to take full advice on your specific circumstances. ■

WINTER WARMER MASSAGE at Orange Grove Clinic
he winter can get us all down. Like many people I often feel gloomy at the prospect of many more months of dark nights, cold mornings and relentless drizzle. The Orange Grove Clinic on St John Maddermarket is offering a whole body Winter Warmer massage that promises to do just that, so I went along to see what they could do for me. The Orange Grove Clinic has some of the best massage therapists in the area. They are called ‘massage angels’, and they certainly live up to their name! Whatever you need, they have a massage that will hit the spot; for relaxation, aches and pains, de-stressing, or just good old pampering. Theirs is a holistic approach to
feeling good, and they specialise in a number of other disciplines, such as yoga and nutrition. Plus they have become the go-to place for pregnancy, birthing and baby yoga and massage. I was certainly flagging and chilled to the bone when I arrived for my massage… and it was drizzling! My massage angel Amelia explained the theory behind the winter warmer massage I was about to have. “At this time of year we are all hunched up with the cold, and often stressed. Christmas can be a difficult time for many as well. So we can feel generally low, run down and cold. “Our Winter Warmer massage is the perfect way to take some quality time out for yourself, de-stress, relax and receive a warming treatment over the entire body. The treatment is carried out in a warm room, with warm oils, towels and treatment bed. It’s very soothing… many people actually fall asleep!” That sounds like bliss! I put myself in Amelia’s expert hands – literally – and gave myself up to
a full hour of luxurious relaxation, soft music, soothing warmth, and fragrant oil containing a blend of lavender, sandalwood, and Frankincense. It was quite a deep massage, but that was my choice. “Some people like a soft touch, others prefer more pressure,” Amelia said. “We do whatever feels comfortable for you.” Amelia gently but firmly dug into the persistent knots on my back and neck, and she suggested a head massage as well, which was amazingly good. Thanks to her magic fingers I left The Orange Grove with a spring in my step, and the warmest of warm glows. I felt rested, chilled out and ready to face life. I recommend this to anyone who wants, or needs, a deliciously warm and relaxing break from busy life. The Orange Grove also offers massage vouchers, a superb idea for a Christmas prezzie – better than socks any day! And it means you get a massage half price for yourself. Cool…and warm too, of course! WINTER WARMER SPECIAL OFFER 1 hour of warming immune boosting massage £35 / 60 mins

V PROFILE

s local entrepreneurs go, Kerry Radley is pretty inspiring. Two years ago she bought the old sorting office in Salhouse and turned it into a village store, Radley’s, that has breathed new life into the area, and is so successful that people queue to get in during the summer months. As if that wasn’t enough, she also finds time to teach yoga four times a week, at The Hub, in Wroxham, specialising in lower back pain and helping people to regain core strength and combat stress and anxiety.
50
So how did the shop come about? “There was nothing in Salhouse really, nowhere you could go for a coffee, or to buy even basic supplies,” says Kerry. “I wanted to open a shop with a difference, somewhere that could be the centre of the community, and where people could meet for coffee, buy basic as well as really nice local food, and have a post office counter as well.” The result is Radley’s, which is proving hugely successful with both locals and tourists. “We are right on the Broads, so we’re very popular with cyclists
and walkers, plus we are dog friendly. Locals pop in for a coffee and bread and milk, but we also have homemade baked goods, sandwiches and deli items.” This little store has a big heart, too. With the help of her children Kira, Finn and Jude, and colleague Rebecca Green, Kerry runs it as ethically as she can, minimising waste, using biodegradable cups, and sourcing ingredients and supplies from local producers. Kerry’s other passion is yoga. She has been practicing for 20 years, teaching for 10, and is one of very few lower back specialists in the UK. “Yoga is incredibly beneficial for back problems, and my clients have found it excellent for relieving pain. We also have people who have had breast cancer surgery, because yoga is very good for scar tissue and draining the lymphatic system. “But as well as helping with physical problems, yoga can also help with stress, anxiety and depression, and is generally a great way to relax, centre and block out the world for a while. “My classes are relaxed, friendly and mixed ability, so they are ideal for people of all ages and levels. But I work people hard to get the most out of the experience, so they don’t get an easy ride! We want them to feel the real benefits that yoga can bring.” Kerry’s yoga classes are held at The Hub, Wroxham, on Mondays and Wednes-days at 10am and 7pm. You will need a yoga mat, blanket and loose clothing. To book, call her on 01603 263910, email kerryradley@icloud.com or go to www.norwichyoga.co.uk. For shop information, go to www.radleys.co

ENVIRON SKIN ANALYSIS AND FACIAL
At The Beauty Rooms, Bawburgh Golf Club
Skin analysis using the Environ Visia machine
J
ULIE LAND BROWN is everything you want a beauty therapist to be… warm, welcoming and very experienced. With nearly 30 years under her belt she’s seen beauty trends and products come and go; some good and some not so good! I have come to her at The Beauty Rooms at Bawburgh Golf Club to have a consultation and facial using Environ skincare products, a range Julie is passionate about because she, and her many clients, have seen the results. “Environ is a what we call a cosmeceutical range, which means it’s based on proven scientific results,” Julie explains. “It works on the basis that we need to introduce more Vitamin A into our skin to correct things like ageing, dryness, sun damage and redness. It really does work
52
to feed, fortify and finish the skin and gives a wonderful glow.” The analysis was done by Laura and Rebecca, from Environ. They bring the Visia machine into The Beauty Rooms every few months to look more closely at Julie’s clients’ skin and show how the products are working. The machine is a powerful imaging system that looks at problem areas below the surface, such as wrinkles, spots, pores, evenness, bacteria, and sun damage. “The beauty of the Visia machine is that we have measurable results, which we all need from our beauty products,” says Julie. “Clients can see for themselves, month on month, how the Environ products are helping to address their specific problems.” I like the sound of that… results at last! Once the Visia machine had pinpointed my
problem areas – a few lines around the eyes, dehydration, and sensitive skin, it was on to the facial, using Environ products that can specifically target these issues. Julie started by cleansing my face, then applied a micro exfoliate, pointing out that this is not a granular product that could strip away new as well as dead skin cells. She applied a serum to my face, and then used another piece of technology, the Ionzyme machine. This is an electric wand that delivers a pulse into the skin, increasing the penetration of the serum by 4,000% (the equivalent of 77 hours of manual massage). Some impressive numbers, and that’s got to be excellent value for money. Next up was a hydrating vitamin face mask, deliciously cold – and to finish a hydrating serum, eye gel and SPF cream. Rebecca completed my session by giving me a mini makeover using Jane Iredale make-up, a natural mineral range which allows the skin to breath. Looking in the mirror afterwards, I was very impressed with how fresh, glowing and plump my skin looked. In just one session, the Environ experience had given me a real boost. Used every day, these products are clearly proven to deliver the results women are crying out for. Science really can be beautiful! BY LUCY OHSTEN For more information go to www.bawburgh.com, or call 01603 740404. The Visia machine is subject to a £20 booking fee, redeemable against two or more Environ products purchased.

Today, every week more than 950 Norfolk youngsters attend a Water Babies swimming class at pools across the county. Franchisee Kim Bennett, one of Water Babies most experienced teachers, operates the Norfolk classes. She was, in fact, the company’s very first teacher based in Leeds before moving here with her husband Mark to establish the local business. The busy mother-of-three plays a key role in the continual development of the company co-writing the baby swimming programme as well as being the senior national tutor on its training programme. Kim’s team of swimming

teachers start wannabe swimmers on their Water Babies journey, progressing through 17 chapters of their learn to swim story. Each chapter is a course of 10 gentle and progressive lessons accompanied by a story book with stickers and end-ofterm badges plus complementary attendance at an underwater shoot. HOW IT STARTED Water Babies was actually launched in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, in 2002 by former scuba-diving instructor, Paul Thompson and his former wife Jessica, who were inspired after having taught their own children to swim. He said: “We quickly realised just how beneficial it can be to learn to swim at a very young age. So we built on those benefits slowly growing our business and watching as other people caught the excitement of Water Babies.”
Today, the company is regarded as the world’s biggest, most professional baby and toddler swimming programme welcoming more than 60,000 children to warm water swimming sessions at about 560 local pools every week. Water Babies also offer world-class, once-in-a-lifetime high-resolution photography of babies and toddlers swimming underwater. Inherent to the successful growth of Water Babies has been its strong ethos of establishing professional standards and systems. Thompson has been quoted as saying: “From the word go we were determined to be as professional as we could be.” n Kim and her team are based at Suite F13 Eastgate Place, Salhouse Road, Norwich. For details about availability of classes you can message them @norfolkwaterbabies or call 01603 263227.

The Festival Collection by Mulberry
BY HOLLY PAGANI INTERIOR DESIGNER AT SALT INTERIORS
10. Cosy
This is the time of year when we start nesting and getting cosy at home. So how can you create a feeling of warmth, other than staying under the duvet?
Well, warm reds, golds and all the Christmassy colours instantly heat things up. Add some luxurious textures like velvet, wool, cashmere and you can’t go wrong. Festival, the new collection from Mulberry, has some gorgeous jewel colours and rich textures which make you want to reach out and touch them. A few carefully placed cushions or a lovely heavy interlined pair of curtains will take your room from frozen to festive. If you can stretch to recovering a chair or sofa, then a statement fabric like their Pageant Stripe will invite you to sit down and enjoy a cosy night in front of the fire.
Pageant Stripe fabric from Mulberry Heritage throws by Johnstons of Elgin Contemporary collection by Johnstons of Elgin
If you do not want to spend a lot of money on new curtains or furniture then you may want to invest in a lovely new throw to snuggle under instead. Johnstons of Elgin have long been making soft warm woollen accessories and are a staple in finishing touches. Their Heritage throws are the epitome of a classic winter blanket – doublesided lambswool with a fringe, in bold checks and bright tartans. They’ll become a part of the family immediately. They also do a Contemporary collection in cool colours but with all the warmth that fine Merino wool can offer. Stunning thrown over the end of a bed to keep your toes toasty. ● For ideas on how you can accessorise a room or for any interior design queries contact Holly at Salt Interiors: info@saltinteriors.co.uk

time to tile ● Geometric: Diverse and visually rich in design, the Janus range (above) combines different geometric patterns. The glazed porcelain matt tile can be used individually or in a mix to produce random or geometric patterns. ● A big trend for 2017 in
● Curtains: New tie backs can transform your windows, and selecting new cushions to enhance the colour of the curtains and room can give a fresh look. ● Vertical Blinds: Slats and louvres can be replaced or you can select a new fabric. New weights and chain are included in the cost. ● Roller Blinds: The fabric of roller blinds can be replaced to give a fresh feel to a room. Norwich Sunblinds use the existing components so the customer is only charged the cost of the fabric. This saves up to 25% as the customer will receive the DIY discount. The customer will need to drop off and collect the blind at the shop and then put the blind back into the existing brackets. The cord can also be replaced to freshen up the overall look of the blind.
carpets is really soft, luxurious deep pile carpets in pastel colours that are great for bedrooms. The luxury feel is back! But still incredibly popular is natural fibre, Sisal, we love it for halls and stairs although it can go in any room. It’s super hard wearing and very modern looking, and comes in various browns, beiges and greys that are all naturally dyed.
● Large format tiles: Create a sense of luxury with larger format tiles. Giza (left) is one of the latest designs – hard wearing, maintenance free porcelain replicates beautiful fossilised quartz and is suitable for all areas. Tile and Stone Gallery

I
T MAY SEEM obvious, but good storage makes a home feel more spacious and if clutter is tidied away, then a room will feel bigger. Successful storage needs careful consideration especially if the space is tight. When planning your storage, evaluate what you really need to keep, get rid of things that are unnecessary, be ruthless and try to store things in the room where they will be used. That way they will be easy to get hold of and put away. Combine easy access open storage for regularly used items and closed storage for items rarely used. Cleverly constructed built-in storage can unify a room, use redundant nooks and fill in those odd spaces.

Adding a touch of class
orwich and Norfolk Upholstery is no new kid on the block, it’s been in Norwich for over 30 years, and owner Philip Thomerson is one of a rare breed of people who knows the traditional skills of upholstery, and is dedicated to preserving them. “I was taught by my mother, Carole Thomerson,” explains Philip. “Her book The Complete Upholsterer is recognised as an authority in this field, and she passed on her passion to me. As a teenager I worked with her at the Victoria and Albert Museum as part of the restoration team, so I had a fantastic start to my career. “The most important thing to us is maintaining the integrity and authenticity of furniture, and our aim is to carry on these skills because, sadly, traditional upholstery is a dying art. But I’m incredibly proud that my son Jack Thomerson came into the business in 2014, so he will continue the family tradition.” Philip has built his reputation on working with trade customers, and his unique distressing process which gives leather an antiqued look has brought him business from all over the world. But he believes the time has come to shout a bit louder about Norwich and Norfolk Upholstery – which is great news for everyone who is interested in having beautifully upholstered furniture in their home. “I’m very excited about the future, Philip says. “We have so many other strings to our bow, such as curtain and loose cover making, and we need to make people aware of all this. “We have taken on new staff – there’s a team of five now, all very experienced upholsterers. Our showroom and workshop have been revamped and we want to invite everyone to visit us at 32 Mason Road to see for themselves what we do here, and talk about their own ideas and needs. “People can see us working on furniture, plus there are completed pieces for sale. We can also build a full sofa or chair from scratch to suit specific needs. It can be fully upholstered with either traditional horse hair styled stuffing, foam, or a combination. We can make cushions with duck feather fillings, down, or foam, and finally the piece can be top covered in fabric or leather.” For those wanting to get creative themselves, Philip will also be starting classes in upholstery, curtain making and loose covers. “There is so much interest in learning traditional homemaking skills now, and for vintage, pre-loved items, which is wonderful. There is nothing more satisfying that making something yourself, and we want to pass this on to the next generation.” ■

THE LIGHT TOUCH Lighting expert SOPHIE AMES The Norfolk Lighting Co. CREATE A FESTIVE AMBIENCE
Lighting can make or break the ambience in your home. This festive season, whether you’re entertaining guests, throwing a party or planning cosy nights in, The Norfolk Lighting Company’s Sophie is here to help… Welcoming guests: People are naturally attracted
to illuminated areas, so use light to lead guests into your home and to a certain area (living room or dining room). Entertaining? Brighter light sets a cheerful mood and encourages activity, perfect for party games! However, focus light on walls or points of interest so it’s not too bright. Cosy nights in: Low level lighting makes a room more intimate, so scatter light with well-placed lamps or use recessed lighting in the ceiling with a dimmer switch to control the mood. GET THE EFFECT
• Sometimes a light bulb change can make a difference. We have a range of bulbs in store for you to freshen up your room. • Use a mix of floor and table lamps to scale down the light for cosy rooms or as statement pieces to bring together your décor. We have a wide range of lamps and shades (including our bespoke fabric service) to accommodate your style. • Impress guests with ceiling pendant lights. We have beautiful ‘wow factor’ pieces in the shop now that can be ordered and fitted by Christmas! NEED MORE LIGHTSPIRATION?

NEW VEGAN CAFÉ Tofurei is the UK’s first vegan cafe with its own micro-soya dairy on site. Opened in the Norwich Lanes at the end of October, Tofurei has been gaining lots of plaudits from vegans and non-vegans alike for its fresh cakes and soysage rolls, cooked on the premises. In fact, its proving so popular that it is already looking at how to expand production to provide a wider choice of savoury vegan treats and a bigger selection of fresh tofu flavours. Designed to provide convenience foods for anyone wishing to avoid animal or dairy products, Tofurei provides a fresh sandwich selection with four of five choices and up to five cake choices made fresh every day. In addition to the micro-soya dairy, Tofurei have their vegan deli-counter, featuring fresh tofu and, on most days, sausages in skins. Tofurei is also East Anglia’s only supplier of Tyne Cheese, proving incredibly popular for its rich taste – free from the oils and emulsifiers usually found in dairy free cheeses, and Solkiki handmade chocolate bars. DO THE JIVE!
After travelling to Mexico and having an amazing insight into real Mexican street food the idea of Jive Kitchen was born. Weeks of travelling and sitting in a camper van writing up menus led them to bringing this great food to Norwich. Jive Kitchen serves hand pressed corn tortillas with every taco (a long process, but definitely worth it!) along with tequilabased cocktails and you will only find tequila made from 100% agave at Jive Kitchen and Bar. Forget the turkey this Christmas, Jive have a menu for the festive season that delivers on every level. From Tacos and Burritos through to Burgers and Butternut Squash, keeping the meat lovers happy as well as plenty of tasty veggie, vegan and healthy options throughout January.

EGETARIAN AND VEGAN cooking is enjoying a real renaissance and deservedly so. In 2016, it’s regarded as Superfood, thanks in part to health conscious social media users, whose ridiculously fit physiques could persuade the most carnivorous to go meat-free. The River Green Café in Trowse has long been a Mecca for fulltime vegetarians and vegans but its relaxed atmosphere and tasty menu really should be a must for anyone who is serious about good food. The café embodies what us veggies have known for years – that it is completely possible to enjoy stunning meals every day without using meat. Overlooking the picturesque village green, the café serves world dishes, daily specials and a great range of wines, organic juices and locally sourced beers and ales. We popped in on a Thursday
76
night and the warm welcome from staff set us up for a lovely evening. We began our meal with Mushroom, Chestnut and Port Paté, which was so good smothered on a wedge of fresh bread. The Sweetcorn Fritters, which were lightly fried, came with crunchy green salad and a delicious peanut dip. For drinks, it was great to go local with a Norwich Ale from the Redwell Brewery just down the road in Bracondale. From the main menu we were excited to try the Tofu, Cashew and Shiitake Satay. Tofu has had a bad rap in the past because home cooks know that it’s kind of difficult to handle and can be bland if under marinated. This is why I always choose it when eating out, Asian and vegetarian chefs know exactly how to prepare it and River Green’s dish is insanely tasty! We also chose the Apple Salad with Mediterranean Spiced Lentils and a pot of the award-winning Candi’s Bramley Apple Chutney. It was a generous plate, packed with wholesome lentils, green leaves, crunchy cucumber and pepper, a sprinkling of walnuts and apple
slices. It’s served with a hunk of fresh brown bread, perfect for mopping the plate. Eating vegetarian means that it’s very likely you’ll have enjoyed two courses of healthy, heart-friendly food. To that end, it’s full steam ahead on dessert. Hoorah! The Chocolate Orange and Cointreau Cup is a perfect treat. Rich, smooth ganache, served with a fruity mango sorbet, mango coulis, sticky caramelised oranges and plump raspberries, all presented beautifully. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at River Green Café. A thumbs up from me and importantly, my non-vegetarian guest, who usually has meat with everything. We’re looking forward to going back. REVIEW: HEIDI SECKER

Surviving a Gluten Free Christmas and New Year
Tofurei is a vegan coffee shop with a continental flavour, showcasing products from the UK’s first shop based micro soya dairy.
BY LOUISA KIDDELL The Norfolk Gluten Free Co. Ltd.
Christmas is a minefield of parties and gatherings, all set to test anyone on a special diet. Eating out can be difficult, so if you have medical reasons to be gluten free make sure that you call ahead to your venue before you arrive to check what’s on the menu, and prewarn them that you are coming. Buffets are tricky too, so unless you know that your host will cater for you, it’s always best to either eat before you go, or take a few things with you that you can share with everyone (they don’t need to know its gluten free!). Christmas dinner is mostly naturally gluten free, so load up on meat, veggies and cheeses, all you need to do is sort out your favourite alternative puddings, cake, stuffing, mincemeat, pastry, crackers, sausages and gravy then you’re good to go. In terms of alcoholic drinks its best to avoid beers and whisky, unless they are certified gluten free, but wines, other spirits and ciders are all safe. Cheers to a gluten free festive season everyone!
A welcome gift for Gluten-free friends: hampers start from £15 ready-made, or build your own in store

I
HAVE JUST had a taste of something very special. I could be greedy and keep it to myself, but that wouldn’t be fair! My taste buds are still singing very happy songs after a visit to Figbar, in Norwich, a new bar and restaurant where dessert is king, and sophisticated and mouthwatering sweet creations take centre stage.

was a willing guinea pig! First was Tea n’ Toast, an Earl Grey crème brûlée, lemon curd, toasted brown bread ice cream, squashed fly biscuit and cornflakes. It was subtle yet powerful, sharp and soothingly sweet, both crisp and creamy… We all love banoffee pie, but Jaime’s version is something else! A quite dreamy caramel that will haunt my dreams, with refreshing lime crème fraiche, maple candied pecans, an intensely banana-y banana caramel ice cream, hazelnuts and shortbread. The familiar taste of a Snickers bar, Jaime style, is a completely indulgent, gooey heavenly combination of salted butter caramel, peanut parfait, and a chocolate mousse. This dessert is possibly Jaime’s signature dish, and has some very famous fans… such as Snoop Dogg!
I also sampled Jaime’s gorgeous cakes; an Italian Brownie, groaning with milk chocolate and hazelnuts; a fudge financier, and a twice-baked chocolate torte, which was so delicious I just couldn’t put it down! Jaime is creating some tempting goodies over the festive season, such as Christmas Pudding, mince pies and mulled cider – all with a delicious twist. This is the perfect place to regroup after gift shopping for a coffee or something stronger… and take a little trip to heaven! REVIEW: LUCY OHSTEN

The brains behind Figbar is top pastry chef Jaime Garbutt and his wife Stephanie. Jaime has already scaled the dizzy heights of Michelin-starred restaurants and has worked with many of the greats, including Gordon Ramsay, Yotam Ottolenghi and Marcus Wareing. “Figbar is a modern way to meet and eat dessert, and we put this into sharp focus,” explains Jaime. “People often want something more after a meal, the theatre or cinema. Here they can have a refined dessert in a relaxed environment, with a coffee or glass of wine. We do pastries, cakes and savouries too, and everything is made on the premises.” But the main event is desserts. “Each one is a complex creation which is refined over and over again to ensure a perfect marriage of ingredients,” says Jaime. “We also pair a specific wine, such as Tawny Port, with each dessert.” It was time to taste, and I

ike it or not, Christmas is nearly upon us and the season of parties are about to begin and so do our dilemnas about what to drink on the day. Christmas day has to begin with bubbles – whether you splash out on Champagne or a sparkling wine. We shall be drinking a Saumur Brut Cuvée Louis St. Croix NV, a delicious traditional method sparkler. Made in the same way as Champagne, sparkling Saumur is based on the Chenin Blanc grape, noted for its fine acidity, delicate bubbles and citrus flavours. At lunch time a light starter of smoked salmon with chicory will be paired with Bourgogne Chablis Lucien M and, because I also like a wild card, the stunning northern Spanish Hiruzta Txakoli. A lovely pale yellow colour with glints of green and rich aromas of white (apple), citrus (grapefruit) and tropical (pineapple), cloaked in a subtle floral perfume – Txakoli is the new Albarino. For the main event, a superb red wine, Devils Staircase Pinot Noir. From Central Otago (New Zealand). Pinot Noir is intense and deeply coloured, with flavours of plum, sweet spice and bramble. And for the traditionalists, a Bordeaux Chateau Cissac. And finally, to accompany Christmas pudding there is no contest, it has the be the sublime Pedro Ximénez from Fernando de Castilla with flavours of ripe fig, treacle, and coffee, serve slightly chilled. Happy Christmas drinking everyone! The Library Bar and Grill, Guildhall Hill, Norwich. www.thelibraryrestaurant.co.uk 01603 616606

A TASTE OF THE REAL MEXICO
G
OOD FOOD requires a good story… and the compelling tale behind newly-opened Nanna Mexico makes their authentic street food taste even better! It’s 1950s Mexico, single mother Margarita is living a hard life, with seven mouths to feed. But she decides she is going to feed the entire neighbourhood as well, with delicious, simple, nutritious food. Her rules were ‘buy fresh, cook simple, waste nothing’, and Margarita’s grandson Luis, took this to heart, opening the first restaurant in Cambridge 10 years ago as a homage to his ‘nanna’. I met up with Juan, the managing partner of the new Norwich restaurant to find out more, and hopefully get a taste of why this authentic Mexican cuisine is so special. “Nanna Mexico is the essence of street food,” Juan explains.
80
“It’s real, honest, and completely authentic, with all the smells, colours, textures and ingredients of nanna’s original kitchen.” Juan’s own journey to Norwich, from his native Argentina, via Andorra and Cambridge, is one of passion, faith and an ambition to create the best, most delicious Mexican street food. “I think what makes us so different is that we want to maintain the tradition and quality of Mexican street food. Everything we serve here is freshly made and to traditional recipes. We use local ingredients and suppliers as much as we can, and we are very lucky that the choice of produce in this area is superb. But there are some things we have to source from Mexico, such as special chillis and spices, and the popular Jarritos soft drinks.” A vital part of Nanna Mexico’s ethics is a commitment to working
with and helping the community. This was set in stone by Margarita all those years ago when she wanted to feed the world, and founder Luis has continued it in every part of his growing food business. “We feel that helping those in need is very important,” says Juan. “We are passionate about our social responsibility and working with people to improve their lives. We regularly give food to the homeless and work closely with local prisons to give employment to ex-offenders in our restaurants. Our aim is to help people find meaning and purpose in life.”

What’s for Christmas dinner? BY KEITH CHARLISH The Paddocks Butchery and Deli
If you haven’t put your order in do it right now! At The Paddocks Butchery and Deli we can tell you where our meat and poultry comes from, how it was cared for and ultimately how it was slaughtered. Good advice on cooking is low and slow, put it in the oven last thing at night at 120°C, check first thing in the morning, drain the fat off and put the meat back in the oven until lunch time. Perfect.

meats, vegetables, beans, plus plenty of choice for kids as well. With the heady waft of Mexican spices in the air I wanted to have a taste myself. Juan personally made me one of their most popular meals, a Big-Ass Burrito – so called because of its ability to satisfy even the heartiest appetite! My veggie version was groaning with good things; rice, two types of beans, peppers and onions, cheese, salsa, sour cream and a delicious sauce, and with guacamole and tortilla chips on the side. It was no surprise to find that it was very good indeed; fresh, tasty and wonderfully satisfying. Nanna Mexico is great for the taste buds, the body and for the community. How many restaurants can offer all that?! REVIEW: LUCY OHSTEN
DUCK Gressingham An excellent alternative, a lot tastier than turkey but for some reason not as popular. Gressingham duck is our choice to offer our customers, again very local so we have the knowledge to advise. GOOSE Great Grove Poultry at Caston near Attleborough. Expensive and very traditional, not blessed with lots of meat but very rich so you won't need as much (the fat is excellent for those roast potatoes). BEEF Hand selected beef from our farmer at Suton near Wymondham My personal favourite is the king of cuts, Rib of Beef on the bone it has a good layer of fat which keeps the meat moist and succulent, again low temperature is the key> For smaller families why not try a beef wellington, cut from a centre cut of fillet it really is the tenderest part of the animal as it does the least amount of work. Please ask any of our experienced butchers for advice, they'll be only too happy to help you find the best choice for your requirements.

TOPPING for afternoon tea is a quintessentially English tradition that is making a huge comeback, and no more so than at Strattons Hotel, in Swaffham. This quirky, funky, and uber stylish independent boutique hotel has seen a massive increase in people of all ages who want to take some quality time out in their busy day for a well-earned cuppa and cakes. I was fortunate enough to have afternoon tea at Strattons with the owner Ness Scott (pictured). Sitting in the peaceful, warm salon, with a crackling fire and two very happy cats sleeping on the sofa, the cares of the day were fading away. “Afternoon tea used to be something just for the older generation, but we are now finding younger people are also appreciating it as a wonderful experience,” says Ness. “Tea is special. It makes you stop,

take time with friends, and eat delicious things as well, of course.” Strattons is certainly the ideal place for this traditional meal. The family has created a beautifully designed and decorated interior, with intriguing objets d’art everywhere, and it’s far enough away from the main street to deliver perfect peace and quiet. It was no surprise that my tea at Strattons was impeccable, elegant and beautiful to look at. A choice of tea or coffee (Earl Grey for me) served in stylish white teapots and proper china cups. Sandwiches and cakes were brought to the table on an ornate three-tired serving stand. It was beautiful, and had an instant wow factor. On the bottom tier were cumin hummus and cress finger sandwiches, smoked salmon and cream cheese on toasted sourdough bread, cheese straws and ‘veggie’ sausage rolls.
ND SO on to the to the second tier, and tea just isn’t tea without scones! Plain and fruit, warm from the oven, with separate pots of freshly whipped cream and homemade strawberry jam. Perfect. “The social side of tea is ideal for all sorts of occasions,” Ness says,” such as hen parties, family celebrations and business events.” The top tier was the icing on the cake… literally. Here, the gorgeous delicate treats included a moist chocolate cake, mini carrot cake, cinnamon and orange macaroons and – topping it off with a lovely festive touch – two gingerbread Christmas trees! It was a real treat to be at Strattons for tea. What a wonderful way to experience the most civilised of English traditions. A delicious and elegant experience that everyone should enjoy. Joe Press Panto Ensemble, Theatre Royal Norwich
My City Life For many years, Joe Press (and his family) have been regular visitors to the Norwich Theatre Royal pantomime. This year, he is swapping the seats for the stage having successfully auditioned to be part of the ensemble for Jack and the Beanstalk which runs from December 13 to January 15. He cannot wait to be part of the star cast which includes dancer, choreographer and performer Wayne Sleep, and panto favourites Richard Gauntlett and Ben Langley.
What will it be like being part of the Norwich Theatre Royal pantomime? Panto was a massive part of my childhood, so to take the step from seat to stage is a major deal for me. I’ve been waiting for this moment for such a long time, which means I need to embrace every second. The process running up to panto is a very gruelling one and to be able to practically live in a theatre doing 50 odd performances over a few weeks, you need to be on top of your game. Obviously being in my home town theatre and having a big panto family around me is very exciting, which means lots of Christmas festivities can commence! What is it you enjoy about this form of entertainment? Panto has always been a big
family Christmas tradition. I was brought up being a regular attendee at the Theatre Royal and attending it every year. It started as being the major inspiration for me wanting to go into this crazy thing we call show business. I love the idea that anything could happen on stage and every night, you have a new audience and you find new life in the show. Being in ‘Pantoland’ gives you the freedom to let anything happen, which is no doubt why I fell in love with the whole fantasy idea and slapstick element. What do you enjoy most about spending the festive season in the county? Obviously we have one of the best pantomimes in the country and it’s never Christmas without panto. I love Norwich itself,
especially around the Christmas period. It is so festive and there is always a hustle and bustle. Norfolk has some gorgeous seaside towns and I love visiting them when I am home. Being able to pop down to Sheringham and walk the dogs is always such a joy. On New Year’s Day I also end up on Cromer beach to watch the fireworks which is always a big family affair. Family time is always high on the agenda with everything from Christmas cake evenings to digging up our Christmas tree. And finally the two questions we ask everybody. The first is, what is your hidden gem in Norwich? That’s such a tough one because I love Norwich as a whole. One place I would definitely say is a hidden gem is the view from the top of Britannia Hill where the Britannia Café is. You get a complete view of Norwich and, if the weather is nice, it’s gorgeous. You can also enjoy a traditional afternoon tea as well. Secondly, where is your favourite place to eat in the city? I’m going to have to say Wagamama in the city centre. I know that does not sound very unique to Norwich but I love the food there and it is likely to become my second home as it is right by the theatre’s stage door!
