The Magic of Malta Heleina Postings rediscovers the gem of the Mediterranean

A

tiny island just south of Sicily blessed with a Mediterranean climate and a rich cultural history, Malta already seems like the perfect setting for a relaxing break. Arriving at The Fortina, a gleaming spa hotel on the waterfront in Sliema which offers all-inclusive breaks and a range of wellness treatments, we realised that if it were possible to be too relaxed, this is where it would happen. Luckily, there’s plenty to tempt you away from the Fortina's range of mouthwatering restaurants and enticing poolside bar. Malta’s size makes it very manageable - we took a ferry trip over the gorgeous blue waters to see Valletta, the atmospheric capital which dates from the 16th century, and hopped in a taxi to get to Mdina, a Moorish settlement and UNESCO world heritage site

36

whose lofty location, perfectly preserved buildings and narrow, shaded alleyways make it seem like part of a dream. More adventurous travellers can then take a boat to the neighbouring island of Gozo, which is renowned for its ruggedly scenic landscape and its magnificent Ġgantija temples, the world's oldest religious structures. Alternatively, you can take a walk along Malta’s varied coastline, where pretty beaches alternate with picturesque shaded bays. After a hard day’s sightseeing, it was time to make our way back to the hotel to relax by the pool or try out some spa treatments; deep-tissue sports massages and acupuncture for the brave, and for the rest of us, exotic facials, aromatherapy and luxurious pampering rituals or just a trip

down to the jacuzzi and steam room.

T

he Fortina takes food seriously, and mealtimes presented us with a choice between Indian, Thai, Japanese Teppanyaki and traditional bistro fare such as juicy steaks. I'd love to be able to say that I stuck to the delicious-looking fresh fruit that was always piled up on the buffet, but all too often this was just the first of many courses! Venturing out, we sampled some of Malta’s delicious traditional cuisine which is characterised by rich, meaty stews, subtle cassoulets and freshly caught seafood seasoned with garlic and herbs. A particular favorite was Aljotta, a tomato-infused fish soup. Malta’s nightlife is on an endearingly small scale, without Vanilla June/July 2014

the tacky tourist bars and clubs that blight many islands in the Med. Paceville has a good selection of bars, while chic St Julians offers beautiful, tuckedaway cafes – the perfect place for a nightcap. n the summer Malta heaves with tourists looking for their fix of sun, sea and sand, but there’s another side to its popularity. Private medical procedures are cheaper here than in the UK, and as heating bills and food costs at home rise ever higher, many people are June/July 2014 Vanilla

coming to the island for longer stays in the winter months, often combining dental work or other surgery with a relaxing break. It’s easy to see the attraction: the warm climate makes gentle exercise appealing, and as almost everyone here speaks English, it’s easy to get the support you need. The Fortina resort has highquality facilities for hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, thalassotherapy and an in-house dentist for guests who want to combine their stay with medical treatments. British foods and newspapers are also easily available, making Malta a home away from home for many Britons. Malta may be small, but it takes leisure seriously. Come here to banish the winter blues or just to enjoy the scenery, and be warned – you might end up staying all year! n

Many of us suffer periods of stress or anxiety that can eat away at us and affect our everyday lives. Our Psychologist outlines some worry-busting techniques to dispel your fears

What was it I was worrying about again..?

Stop worrying

and I

f there’s one thing that eats away at your peace of mind and your joy in life, it’s worry and anxiety. Going over and over what may happen, anticipating all the problems, dreading things that may never come to pass. The tension and negative self-talk which goes with worry often brings about the very thing we fear – we all know that the more frightened we are of failure, the more we are likely to fail.

48

living

VICIOUS CIRCLE

Worry is a way of thinking that accomplishes nothing except to stress you. The productive way of dealing with concerns is to focus on them, imagine various options and possibilities, think through them, work out what to do – and then, do it. Our brains keep our thoughts and feelings fixed on the issue, while sending out adrenaline to spur us to action. Vanilla June/July 2014

Worry starts when you get stuck at the first stage, thinking over and over the issue, without moving on to the rest of the process and doing something about it. Then the thoughts can become ever more obsessive and desperate and the constant adrenaline leaves you anxious, even panicky, unable to relax. Now a vicious circle starts. People can’t think straight when they’re fearful and anxious, so the more worried you get about something, the less likely you are to be able to deal with it appropriately.

IMAGINARY FEARS

It seems that things we worry about usually have more to do with what we imagine than what’s real. Imaginary fears are generally worse than real ones. I remember a patient who was sleepless with anxiety about a house move. He was imagining everything that could go wrong – from the sale falling through to the movers dropping his furniture. Sometimes a worry is shielding us from a bigger concern. I’m reminded of a woman who said she couldn’t start a diet – in mid-summer – because she was worried about how she could refuse cake and mince pies at Christmas at her in-laws. Of course, she was really torn between feeling she should diet, on the one hand, and not really wanting to on the other. Some anxieties are easily dealt with. For instance, it’s thought that about 12 per cent of worries are unfounded concerns about health. Ring your GP, and lay them to rest.

“The negative self-talk and tension which goes with worry often brings about the very thing we fear” FREE-FLOATING ANXIETY

Some people feel anxious first and THEN find something to worry about. This is free-floating anxiety. I once had such a patient who came one day looking very tense. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “The hurricane in New York!” she said. Did she have friends June/July 2014 Vanilla

WORRY BUSTERS: real

Getting out of the worry trap always begins with approaching the issues calmly. One useful trick is to imagine you’re advising a friend, or imagine how a practical, level-headed person you know would act in your situation. It can be helpful to talk things over with someone knowledgeable. And the next step is to move the worry on to the planning and action stages. These worry-busting techniques will help: ✱ Write down your concerns. This immediately helps you feel calmer and more objective. ✱ Ask the key question: are these worrying thoughts helpful? If they are drawing your attention to something that needs dealing with, then start the pattern for dealing with things in the next three points below. ✱ Face the worst! What is the worst that could happen? Write it down. Now write down a few ways you’d cope if it did happen. Create a Plan A, and an alternative Plan B. Then think of some ways to make the worst less likely. ✱ Get the facts. Worry can arise from confusion, or trying to make a decision without enough knowledge. To end doubt, imagine you’re collecting all the facts for someone else will help you stay calm and objective. If you’ve a difficult decision to make, try imagining you’re a lawyer, whose job it is to be completely impartial. ✱ Analyse the facts, once you’ve got them. Decide what to do. Do it! ✱ Use your night thoughts. When you’ve a worry, your mind goes on thinking about it during sleep. Lie still when you wake for a few minutes to give helpful ideas the chance to drift into your mind.

49

health

What was it I was worrying about again..?

or relations there? Was she planning a visit? Did she actually think the hurricane would zoom across the Atlantic to Britain? No, no, and of course not. The hurricane was simply something her mind had latched onto in its desperate search to find a reason for the surge of anxiety she’d felt that morning as she felt practically every morning and had done her whole life.

Some people feel anxious first and THEN find something to worry about. This is free-floating anxiety. Trauma can cause this, as can stress, illness or antibiotics by depleting the body of nutrients – extra B vitamins can help. Low blood sugar can panic the brain as it feels threatened with starvation – so adopting a healthy eating plan will make you feel better mentally as well as physically! A bedtime protein snack may help stop morning anxiety by keeping the blood sugar high overnight. n

50

WORRY BUSTERS: imaginary For all worries but specially those about things out of your control, or regrets and “if onlys”, these help: ✱ Keep busy. When your mind has something real to work on, there’s no room for the unreal! Which is why some worriers find that they can stay cheerful at work but when they relax, all their anxieties come rushing back. Find a few projects to occupy those vulnerable leisure moments. ✱ Plan for problem times. For instance, someone who finds social gatherings an ordeal can organise the day of a party so that they’re too busy to worry about it in advance. ✱ STOP those endless negative thoughts. Practise becoming aware of slipping into that familiar worry routine. It’s a kind of trance. To snap out of it, ping a rubber band at your wrist and yell STOP (out loud or in your mind). Visualise a brilliant neon STOP sign filling your mental vision. Every time you disrupt the worry pattern in this way, the habit loses strength. ✱ Keep a worry notebook. Jot down worries which occur to you during the day. Assure yourself you’ll think these concerns through – but later, during your Worry Half Hour. This lets your mind stop nagging you, because it knows you’re taking these concerns seriously and plan to deal with them. ✱ Fix a time for your Worry Half Hour, or 15 minutes (or an hour, if you must!) and promise yourself you’ll stick to it. And then use this time for worrying! Ideally, decide on a place where you’ll worry – one with no other distractions – and a time. How about a bedroom with no TV – at a time when your favourite programme is on? (This brings worrying under conscious control.)

BEAUTY

your beauty questions solved ...by the Vanilla beauty experts

Q. I have poly cystic ovary syndrome, I have heard that IPL (Intense Pulse Light) hair removal would be a solution. Can you advise? Poly cystic ovary syndrome can cause hormonal hair growth especially on the face and is a concern for many women. Laser or IPL hair removal can be very effective with good long term effects, although not permanent due to the excessive hair growth caused by the syndrome, but it is definitely an option which would be beneficial for you. Rather than buying the equipment I would suggest you invest your money in going to a reputable salon and having the treatment done professionally, as the power of the salon machines are far greater than the home versions, and which will deliver better results. Most salons and clinics will give you a complementary consultaion and patch test which I would highly recommend. I suffer with painful ingrowing toenails, what causes them and how should I prevent them? An ingrowing toe nail can be extremely painful. There are several possible causes of an ingrown toenail, including

June/July 2014 Vanilla

incorrectly cut nails, tight fitting shoes or a nail infection. Treating them can be simple, there are several things you can do to prevent them. When trimming your toenails either file or cut them straight across, never cut the corners at an angle as this can make the nails grow into the skin. After a hot bath, once the skin is softened, gently push the skin away from the nail with a cuticle pusher or cotton bud but do not try to dig out the ingrowing nail. Make sure your shoes aren’t too tight and are comfortable with enough space around the toes. A visit to a chiropodist or your doctor would be advisable if the problem persists. Now I have hit 40, I feel it’s all downhill from here! What can i use on my skin and what facials would you recommend? Life begins at 40! Spring clean your skin. I would recommend a microdermabrasion facial or a skin peel to give your skin a pick me up and bring a glow back to your skin. Both treatments deeply exfoliate, removing dead skin cells and improving the texture and smoothness of the skin. As well as creating a youthful glow, these treatments wil treat a wide range of skin problems including wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, flaking skin, enlarged pores, acne scars, pigmentation, dry skin, age spots as well as promoting the production of fresh collagen and cells. A good skincare routine is also critical – before replacing your normal products get some skincare advice on which products will best suit your skin. n
